Both my children have gone through St Augustine's school - my second is now in year 4 - and since the new Head Teacher has arrived he has transformed the school in so many positive ways as he did in his previous setting. My children have benefited so much from his vision, giving them so many extra experiences to punctuate the growing excellence in teaching day to day (from seeing Carmen at the Royal Opera House, spending the day at the Roman Baths to learning survival techniques in the woods!) and the caring ethos permeates through everything they do. The level of teaching is fantastic and with a strong governing body and an active PTFA the school is set to go from strength to strength. We are surely due a Good rating at the next ofsted to put to bed the previous report which is now, frankly, outdated and a world away from where we are now. I see nothing other than an 'outstanding' future for our school which is part of a brilliantly supportive Parish community. (Bernadette)

Our twins started at St Augustine’s in September (2020) and are hugely enjoying themselves, running in each day without a backward glance. Despite the many pressures brought to bear by COVID restrictions, there has clearly been a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes to ensure the children are able to have as normal, fun and stimulating a time at school as possible.
There is plenty of space and modern play equipment - the fact that the school has a playing field is a real plus when a number of others only have concrete. We also liked that the location is quiet, with easy parking and is away from areas of high traffic pollution.
The Roman Catholic tradition of the school is expressed in firm boundaries and clear expectations on the children of positive behaviour - it’s evident that the ethos is one of mutual respect and kindness. This is echoed in the regular newsletters that keep parents & carers informed.
Mrs Allen and Ms Kirby, as well as the other supporting staff in Reception class have been everything you would wish for as your children start school - fun and upbeat, engaged and affirming, patient and inspiring as they introduce new learning to small people. They are friendly and communicative with parents too, and the twins really love them both.
Initial impressions are of strong, supportive leadership. We have been impressed that the headteacher Mr Hilliam comes out - smartly dressed -to greet parents and pupils most mornings, rain or shine. In a pandemic, his willingness to be visible and accessible is reassuring and gives a welcome sense of ‘keeping the ship steady’.
The uniform includes a proper shirt with buttons and elastic tie. The twins at 4 years old have understandably found the buttons and tie challenging - requiring help to dress and undress morning and evening, but this is a minor quibble, and I’ll admit the children do tend to look smarter than where the uniform is polo shirt and sweatshirt.
Parents of older pupils at the school have spoken positively to us of the quality of teaching and atmosphere as their children have progressed through the classes - judging by the smiling faces of children coming out at the end of the day, it definitely seems to be a happy school, and we are glad we chose it.

This is Downend's hidden gem. My daughter started in reception class September 2020 and is flourishing. She loves school and heads in without a backward glance every morning.
We had initially dismissed the school as we are not Catholic, and it is by no means our nearest school, but any initial fears were completely unfounded. The school ethos is one of caring and community, and my daughter loves the morning walk where we can discuss her day ahead (the WOW walking to school badges are also a welcome addition).
Everyone I have met from teachers, office staff, the caretaker and other parents have all made us feel incredibly welcome, and like part of a family. Mr Hilliam, the head teacher, is outside to greet us every morning, whatever the weather, and always has time for a quick chat. It makes my daughter's morning.
We are so happy we made the decision to send my daughter here. Thank you for making the start of her school career such a positive one.

This wasn’t the closest school to us but when we visited we were both struck by the calm learning environment and well behaved kids. 8 years on, we still hold that view, especially seeing how well the school responded to the Covid crisis. Would highly recommend.

We have had all three of our children here for the last three years and we’ve been really happy with the high quality teaching and care at this school. All three kids have thrived. Highly recommended.

My daughter is 8 and started at St. Augustines at the beginning of the new school year. She was struggling in her last school which is why we moved her.
In such a short time she has come on leaps and bounds at St. Augustines, the difference is astonishing. She has come on with her reading, writing and spelling, the difference is phenomenal and she is the happiest little girl. We have an emotion system on a board at home and every day on coming home she has drawn a smiley face. Our home life has also changed, our little girl is such a pleasure to be around and I am extremely proud of her and forever grateful to St. Augustines.
Every single person I have come across at the school has been truly happy, helpful and encouraging. The Head Teacher, Mr. Hilliam, is front of house every morning greeting parents and children alike, which to me is a sign of the care and commitment he puts into the School.
Thank you St. Augustines.

Fabulous school! Small, welcoming and very friendly with a family feel. We looked around a few schools and, despite us not being Catholics ourselves and it not having the 'best' Ofsted in the area, this one appealed most to us. We followed our hearts and are really pleased. Our second child is now in reception. He's settled in well, is very happy and learning quickly. Am looking forward to the next 6 years!

My son goes to this school and he loves it!. It's a wonderful place where they also learn good values and to respect others. The teachers are excellent and they learn in a nice, friendly and safe environment. The children are well looked after and the PTFA and Governors are very friendly!! We have a very closed connection with the church and the Catholic faith is also a very strong point.

Great School! I have daughters in year 4 and Reception who love attending and both are progressing well, being given support and assistance at all the right stages.
My youngest daughter started in Reception last September and her development both academically and personally has been amazing to watch.
Both girls have been given some great opportunities and this will continue with the schools plans.
The school itself is welcoming, friendly and with a great community feel. It's going from strength to strength!

Both my children attend St Augustine's in Reception and Year 3. Over the last 3 years since Mr Clements has become the Headteacher the school has gone from strength to strength. The standard of the teaching staff is fantastic. The help and care from every staff member is outstanding. The school has a lovely atmosphere very welcoming. I am very happy my children attend St Augustine's and I am so pleased the school just keeps on improving all the time.

Both my children have attended this beautiful Faith school. My youngest is coming to the end of her primary school journey and I'm so proud that she will be leaving St Augustine's not only with a strong understanding of literacy and numeracy but also a knowledge of the world and her community. The school has given her great opportunities in music and technology and most importantly has instilled the need to care for others and our world.
Thank you St Augustine's.

Absolute gem! We are lucky to be part of the great changes taking place at this top school and have seen both my children growing beautifully not just academically but also being caring and loving to others and their environment. The school offers a safe and playful environment. Teachers have been helpful and understand my childrens needs. The head Mr Julian Clements works hard with the parents & PTFA helping to show the schools brilliant abilities and the even more future potential!

Three of my children have been through this lovely, caring community school and my 4th is now in year 3. Mr Clements, the headteacher, is a brilliant head, being strict when he needs to be but also fun ensuring the children are learning in a great environment. My 7 year old says if someone does something wrong he doesn't just tell that person he tells the whole school (without naming the child) so everyone can learn from it. He also told me that Mr Clements tries to teach people friendship so that no-one gets left out :-) . I am so proud of our faith based school and of how happy and friendly all the children and families appear to be. Thank you to all the fab teachers, Governors, PTFA, Mr Clements and the children for making St Augustine's such a great school.

Both my children adore the school. They are well supported in their learning by all the staff and the fabulous community spirit.

This was a good school when I left here a few years ago. I remember the old school uniform and the old logo, and you made a massive improvement

A hidden gem in Downend. A caring, nurturing school. My nieces are flourishing there.
