Our garden redevelopment was triggered by the need for screening from new properties built to the rear of our house - we took the opportunity to have the whole of the back garden redesigned. We had many sessions with John looking at options for trees, plants, aggregates and paving, firepit, exotics area, etc. John was very professional and easy to work with. He made proposals that took our requirements on board and refined the plan to meet our budget etc. We are delighted with our new garden and highly recommend John.

Appletree Garden Designs have just completed a total overhaul of our front garden including design, build and planting. We are absolutely delighted with the end result - it has completely surpassed expectations. Not content with enjoying our beautiful new front garden we are now in the process of working with John and team to plan a complete redesign of our rear garden. A big project but one we are approaching with confidence knowing that we are in John's very capable hands. Major strengths of Appletree over other garden companies is the attention given to getting the brief right at the outset. I wouldn't hesitate recommending them to others - for gardens big & small!

2 years ago we wanted a complete overhaul of our back garden. It was dark, overgrown and on all sorts of various levels. We wanted it to be bright, easy to maintain and 'dog friendly'. We knew it was not going to be an easy job at all. We found John and his website on Google. He was calm and professional and always had a lot of time for us. His design was detailed, sophisticated and practical. He would be patient and listen to any changes we wanted to make and integrated those with ease. The landscapers were a great team. They were neat and tidy as they worked (non-stop). We now have a bright, smart, modern garden. We were so happy with John and his team, that we got them to do our front garden last year. John and the landscapers worked in exactly the same manner on the front garden as they did with the back. We ended up with an equally impressive garden in both style and workmanship. Neighbours were taking photos of the garden for a few months after works finished! I recommend John and the landscaping team very highly and would no doubt use them again in the future that's for sure.

We are delighted with our garden. John redesigned the layout including new decking, fencing, wall, lawn and paths. Once that was all built we have him a brief of colour and scented plants and the planting was completed in June. The garden is looking lovely now.

We found Appletree Designs through google and from the start found John Mclaren to be very professional and reliable. Our project involved the re-designing of front and back gardens. John was very thorough in explaining the process and was always very keen to get our input in all steps along the way and I was very impressed with his attention to detail. Delighted with our new garden, John transformed a muddy, shady space into a tranquil oasis. The planting is beautiful. John took time to understand our needs before preparing the plans which resulted in a design which is fresh & exciting, the garden seemed to grow! The landscapers were brilliant, considerate & very fast. The transformation is something I would never expected from our small space, we're delighted! John was extremely easy & a pleasure to work with. A garden redesign & landscaping is an expensive extravagance but worth every penny. It feels like we have another large room to the house.

I found John and Appletree Garden Design via a Google search, and wanted someone very knowledgeable and professional to redesign my small, north-east facing back garden to complement a recent building project. The brief was to bring together a very modern 'Bauhaus' style with a Mediterranean look and colour scheme, inspired by Cesar Manrique's beautiful creations in the Canaries - no small challenge in a wet, shady plot in north London. John came up with a brilliant garden design, making the most of the small space, but giving the garden exactly the kind of modernist.structure I was after, with low white rendered walls that separate different areas for sitting and eating, and lots of planting areas to soften the structure.I even got a very unobtrusive and elegant bike shed within the scheme. John was extremely professional, understood the brief perfectly, and has been very supportive and reliable throughout the whole project. The standard of the garden build by Robert and his garden crew at NLG Landscaping is extremely high. They have done a lovely job, and were a pleasure to have around during the work. In addition, they were excellent on technical issues like putting in proper drainage channels etc, so the scheme doesn't only look pretty, it is very practical as well. The plants will go in in the spring, and I am sure the finished result then will be just what I had hoped. Altogether a thoroughly professional and enjoyable experience working with John and Appletree. I would recommend them very highly.

In 2012 I moved into a house with a garden which consisted mainly of rotting decking and assorted weeds. I had one definite idea about what I wanted – no lawn – and a number of vague ideas about layout and planting. In a series of planning meetings and email/telephone discussions John patiently took me through the realistic possibilities, presented a plan which was quite perfect, suggested planting to incorporate my favourites and match my colour preferences, and arranged the hard landscaping, which was installed to a very high standard. The whole process, from first approach to completion, was painless – indeed mostly enjoyable – and the final result is, to quote a friend, ‘exquisite’. The bees and butterflies like it too. My only complaint is that I am now spending too much time just sitting and gazing!
