Reviews of Dean's Garden Centre
E. T.
Got all my plants for my new raised border from Deans and I am just delighted with quality and health of the plants. Such a great variety too, very impressed.
The friendly staff and great advice I always receive makes this an outstanding place to visit.
I had all my plants and compost delivered and the delivery guys were really happy to take it all to the bottom of my garden, which was much appreciated.
The cafe is so nice too, love it here, thank you to all the wonderful staff. 👍who always go above and beyond.

One of the best garden centres I’ve been to outside of London! The rare house plant collection is insane.
Some rare plants are a little more pricy than the ones I’ve seen, but possibly due to being from a different supplier. Most are still very fair especially considering the how mature a lot of the plants are. I mean just look at that philodendron verrucosum and gloriosum!!! And that peace lily is just so beautifully variegated.
I bought a beautiful philodendron florida ghost for, if I remember correctly, around £149. Beautiful minty colour. No damage, soil condition is great too.
If anyone is ever visiting York definitely go check it out. Drive if you can as the bus there can be a little confusing.
The staff are all incredibly lovely!

Personally I would always try to write something positive about what ever business I am reviewing ,if I can't find anything positive about a particular firm I probably wouldn't write anything.
Whilst I've been on holiday in the north of England this week I've visited several garden Centres and what has impressed me the most is how you adapted your tearooms/restaurants to keep people safe and keep your businesses ticking over during Covid,I have to say your Restaurant was fantastic, your staff too were remarkable as they carried out their cleaning duties.
York is a place we often visit so I'm sure to call in again. All the best from a very happy customer.
REVISITED FEB.2022
Restaurant, brilliant as always, plant selection also wonderful.. 👍
W. J.
A busy garden centre with a very nice restuarant serving hot & cold food & cakes. You may have to wait to be seated, but it's worth the wait. Helpful staff and a nice atmosphere.
M. R.
Best Garden Centre in York. Better quality plants than anyone else
.Just purchased a Agave Geminiflora after enquiring about one last week. Also got a really nice Polycias.Great service.Great plants.
N. W.
This garden centre is amazing, the best selection of houseplants I've ever seen, so many unusual varieties and the staff are really knowledgeable. The restaurant is lovely too!
G. R.
Went to the bothy for excellent coffee and scone. Then walked around the plants to enjoy the lovely displays and bought some lovely pansies. Friendly staff and really nice coffee. Highly recommend. Lots of butterflies and bees as well (Verbina and painted lady butterfly).
k. j.
Incredible selection of houseplants. Zz, cast iron plant, snake plants, chinese evergreen, potho, everything you can name.
Everything’s on the expensive side though.
Staff helpful. Would recommend for people who love houseplants.
S. S.
Love love love this place! 💚 Tuesday smaller and hanging plants are very reasonably priced with some good opportunities to buy rarer specimens. 10/10 will be back!

I haven't been in 6yrs and the new restaurant is wonderful the food is seriously nice and the staff were very good, it was busy and we had to wait for a table.
We went for Daffodil bulbs and wasn't disappointed.
C. C.
Lovely place. Lots of different produce. We bought some plants fo gifts then had a delicious lunch. Wonderful
J. W.
Excellent cafe we really enjoyed our meal.
I went to Dean's principally as a collector of Cacti because I had seen the pictures of the plants on Dean's Facebook page and they looked amazing.
Reality on seeing the Cacti was very disappointing compared to the other plants available for sale whch were healthy and well cared for.
Some had not been watered for some considerable time, some were dead and had been so for some time as just the skeleton of the plant remained in the pot a number of others were dieing.
There is just a complete lack of maintenance of the Cacti plant's compared to the other plants which are well looked after, I am not just moaning the evidence is there, you only have to look at the condition of the Cacti plant's.
I would have loved to have bought a number of the plants particularly the larger plants but didn't simply because of the condition the plants were in which is a shame.
K. A.
A lovely garden centre with plenty of choice & variety. Very helpful staff & a great airy cafe too. The coffee & cake are delicious!
C. M.
Very helpful staff when you want to discuss the right products or plants for what you need. Also seem happy to recommend alternative options when they can't provide the best thing.
S. C.
Love this place, easily spending a few hours looking around. Great cafe too.
J. A.
Great selection of plants, shrubs and everthing that goes with gardening. Delicious food in The Bothy and friendly staff through out the centre.
J. A.
Always good, staff are friendly and helpful, food is excellent. Well worth a visit👍
K. W.
Great place to stop for lunch. We bought a few good quality plants. I would recommend anything on the menu good sized portions, freshly made and reasonably priced. I particularly recommend the crab sandwich if you like fresh dressed crab.
A. G.
Amazing house plants!!! I'll definitely be back, friendly staff
M. P.
Open until 7pm on Tuesday so went for tea. Wonderful food as always and happy and friendly staff. Get a Deans loyalty card and your points will soon add up.

Some stuff not necessary. Not friendly
J. C.
Very nice looking scampi and chips for my Mother in law, we had had a very good breakfast earlier elsewhere, so just had a pot of tea. Good range of well tended plants and helpful staff.
C. G.
Always a pleasure to visit and a main source of plants for our garden. Helpful staff and an excellent, very popular tea room in
C. H.
Excellent range of plants, shopping for indoor hanging plants on this visit and very pleased with purchases.
My son (19) and I were very impressed by the food in the cafe, better than most good pub food! Scampi & chips and a burger & chips neither of us needed to eat anything else that day!
J. G.
Great selection wonderful staff and so helpful and the best cafe around
A. S.
Great selection and reasonable prices.
S. M.
A friend and I visited the garden centre today to purchase edible plants for my allotment. I can't thank Ian enough for his assistance and advice today. He was really helpful and knowledgeable as to which conditions each plant required for optimum growth ie which bag of compost would be the most suitable all round and the ratios for mixing the said compost together with sand & grit for the remaining plants We shall definitely visit again.
C. B.
We visited here today for breakfast which was exceptional! The food was delivered freshly cooked to our table within 10 minutes of ordering. Staff courteous & could not have been more helpful. Quality of ingredients second to none. Amazing sausages. We sat outside in the sunshine but the heavens opened suddenly & torrential rain followed. Three members of the team rushed out & carried our meals inside. This is service over & above. Visit here - you will not be disappointed
D. L.
Beautifully presented plants and gardening equipment, fantastic staff and a superb restaurant. A great place for a visit!
Update: Had a breakfast in their restaurant. Lovely!
Another update (Autumn 2022): Still a great place to buy gardening essentials and enjoy good food!
A. B.
Absolutely fabulous garden centre with very knowledgeable staff. Even better restaurant. The Bothy catered for my dairy allergy with ease and the food was delicious. I had a roast dinner with freshly cooked veg (without butter) nothing was too much trouble! Can't wait to go again. A+
R. E.
Excellent grub at reasonable cost, very friendly staff and very healthy, well looked after plants. My only complaint, spoilt for choice! Planning a return trip.
B. S.
Despite the building works going on the cafe was functioning just fine. Quiche chips and peas just as good as ever and I loved the cherry crumble. The cream scones looked to die for, hope they have them next time!
M. R.
So many beautiful rare plants and in healthy condition
D. M. (.
I visited Dean's to buy some gifts for my garden-loving grandma. I'm not what you'd call an expert on plants, so I needed a little help. There was a young man there called Ian who helped me pick something out. He was really helpful and kind and gave me the benefit of his expert plant knowledge! It's great to get a top-notch customer service experience like that, something that's not easy to find nowadays. Great work Dean's and Ian!
K. S.
Lovely, healthy plants and good selection. Great food in the cafe
v. p.
Lovely food friendly staff. Whilst we were there a customer had a medical problem the staff were fantastic they could not do enough to help the family i think they deserve some recognition for all they did.
a.
Disappointing today. We had to wait over half an hour for our food. The food was poor when we got it. Chips were over cooked and veg wasn't particularly good. The pork pie and my wife's scampi were fine, but the 'supporting food' was not.
J.
Dean's Garden Centre is a fantastic place. Their plants are of good quality and not badly priced compared to other garden centres. The cafe / restaurant is beautiful and the food and service are always exceptionally good. My only disappointment was that when buying some of the delicious cakes to take away from the cafe they were supplied in a non-biodegradable non-recyclable polystyrene clamshell box. Surely cardboard cake boxes or some other form of more environmentally friendly packaging could be used? Disappointing - as we all try to do our bit to be less environmentally damaging.
N. M.
Lovely garden centre. Lots of nice things to buy. Plants are in impeccable condition. Christmas trees and baubles set up. Everywhere very clean. Covid cautious. Good selection of food/sweets in the cafe. Vanilla slices looked "yum". Tables and chairs in the cafe are sprayed ever time someone leaves.
M. T.
Now one of our favourite places to visit,we love it here. Spacious, clean and very well organised in all areas.Great selection of bulbs, plants and all your gardening needs. Some lovely gifts, cards, books and a fine selection of cakes, biscuits ,sweets , and preserves . The cafe is well worth a visit, the food, service and staff are excellent and all in pleasant surroundings.
K. B.
We enjoyed our time at Dean's and my Wife got everything she was after well done Dean's. We'll be back.
J. R.
Once we’ve all finished drooling and slobbering over the delish food we were served here today we’ll write a review 😋
Brilliant service from a lady named Marie today even when we asked to move tables during their busy lunchtime she didn’t bat an eye lid - thank you Marie. Food arrived promptly was hot and super fresh. Very generous sized plates of deliciousness. Thank you ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
c. m.
There's a reason I go to Dean's for all my gardening needs. The staff are wonderful! They are always so helpful and happy! They always give the best advice and are so knowledgeable. I was sad to hear today that they have been subject to a few customers who are not happy with the one way system that they have in place (for our and their protection) but they carry on regardless with their wonderful attitudes and it makes shopping with them a happy experience. Keep up the good work guys and gals, I shal see you all again soon!
J. H.
Nice garden centre, wheelchair friendly nice cafe and food
E. K.
Good selection of indoor plants, really beautifully set out. Could have a bigger terrarium product range but overall was really happy with my first visit here!
M. C.
Lovely garden centre with a really lovely cafe. The food was hot and delicious and I recommend this for a wet days browsing morning coffee and cake or afternoon cuppa and a light bite or just a pudding. Enjoy
m. a.
Decent garden centre with a very popular restaurant. My mother visits very regularly she thinks its the best in the area - on the outskirts of York. Plenty of free parking.
B. T.
I called to see if they had an item in stock which they didn't but the team were so helpful and got me some ordered from their other branch. Really helpful customer service. Thank you!
A. S.
Great variety of tropical plants and rare ones.
Just slightly overpriced. Can find cheaper on other centers, but this one is more luxurious and extremely well taken care of. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly too
K. H.
Very friendly staff, good stock and gift section. Cafe excellent food , freshly cooked , tasty and well presented.
Staff cant do enough for you.
Good covid safe standards.
100 percent recommend
P. T.
Absolutely fantastic. As regards the covid situation these guys are on the ball. WELL DONE. We had a beautiful meal sat outside the staff are all helpful and brilliant. Our food was hot tasty and plentiful. ( VERY PROFESSIONAL). A spot of shopping also. Thanks we will return soon.
K. G.
Great place to get your gardening needs and other things
A. T.
Clean good range of plants, pond fish and stone masonry. Indoor shop with barbecues, gifts some food and sweets. Indoor cafe selling cooked and non cooked food, snacks and cakes
Good parking , helpful staff.
S. H.
We went for breakfast in café which was very nice and reasonably priced, loads of other lunchtime meals too, well worth a try.
D. C.
Very good , lovely food.
J. S.
Question - how was Dean's Garden Centre?
Answer - tempting. Such a lot of lovely plants shrubs trees and ancillaries to choose from it is hard to stick to a budget.. in a good way!
Cafe pretty good too with very friendly staff.
B.
Had a salmon with a salad. Just perfect. No skin and crispy base. Delicious. Definitely recommend it and will have it again. Thank you, Chef!👌👍
A. B.
Nice garden centre. Visited cafe quite late so limited choice but drinks cakes and service were excellent!
C. S.
Great selection of plants and non food items at reasonable prices
M.
the staff here are so lovely especially at the restaurant - really welcoming and never make you feel like anything's too much trouble. The portions are great and the desserts are to die for, you don't have to wait that long for food either. well organised during COVID as well, 5/5 thank you :))
K. P.
A nice garden centre with reasonably priced plants. The outdoor bit needs to be better lit for winter evenings. Some nice trinkets to buy too. Plus a great restaurant.
J. G.
Amazing diversity, incredibly kind staff and overall a great garden centre. Paradise for anyone who's into houseplants or outdoor plants. Will definitely visit again and reccomend to everyone! 💚
I. P.
Great selection of houseplants with some rare and hard to find varieties available. Prices are reasonable and if you join the loyalty scheme you can get discounts off future purchases.
Can’t wait to try the cafe post-lockdown.
H. S.
Excellent garden and gift center. Lovely large café and the meals were well served and delicious. Staff were very friendly and helpful. A lovely place to visit. Children very welcome.
J. M.
Me and my wife visited during the pandemic and honestly everything is so well thought out and clear. There are always staff around to give you a hand and the customer service is so good. The plants are always in beautiful condition and there is an amazing choice of indoor and outdoor plants. We didn't visit the cafe but my wife said it has vegan ice cream which is a plus. Definitely recommend a visit here if you're after indoor plants, the selection is better than anywhere else in York.
C. B.
Great garden centre, lovely Christmas shop such a variety of things there. Fantastic cafe too.
P. B.
Great garden centre. Pricey but good quality. Excellent cafe , great menu
Of good tasty food. Prawn sandwich on brown with tasty side salad , my choice and totally enjoyed.
S. R.
Visited this afternoon, the gentleman on the door was very friendly and helpful fully explaining the layout of the store and where to go. I asked if you stocked a certain plant, he very kindly asked a young man who explained where they were within the outside garden area. The same young man who was also very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful came to find us to see if we had found the plant, then showed me exactly where they were.
The whole experience in the store was very pleasant and safe.
The checkout procedure worked very well and it was a pleasure to shop again at Deans, all staff very helpful and friendly.
C. H.
Great friendly service, well set up to enable social distancing with a one way system in place. Good advice received on composts, mulch and bark chippings to use. Very good selection of stock at great prices and a loyalty scheme too.
N. M.
The Garden Center, just amazing, enjoyed the plants. Lots of things to look at. A very good seed and bulb section. Plus a very good tea garden. 🍵
A. D.
Always neat, tidy and clean. The plants are displayed nicely, well kept and healthy. I particularly like that often you can buy smaller and so cheaper varieties of shrubs and grow them on yourself. More garden centre than nursery, very large cafe area (when open) hence, for me, 4 not 5 stars. Although their Christmas displays are worth 5 stars on their own!
S. T.
This is a great garden centre with a cafe serving meals also. The centre caters for all tastes, from seeds etc to frit trees and garden paving and fencing. They also have a branch in Scarborough
R. A.
The best breakfast in any garden centre.quality ingredients. Good selection of plants too
P. L. (.
Went there looking for house plants and wasn't disappointed. They were a bit pricey but there was a huge selection to look through. Came away happy and with 5 new plants. Will be going back soon.
S.
Lovely garden centre, went looking for interesting houseplants and was not disappointed. Staff were really polite and helpful, good social distancing in place and logical one way system. Look forward to visiting for outside plants once the weather brightens up!
S. R.
Visited today and had lunch. The whole experience was excellent from the welcome until we left. Staff worked very hard to keep visitors safe. They carried out their duties with a friendly and professional manner. Food excellent and a good range of well kept plants.
P. S.
A lot of plants for home and garden. I love this shop.
B. C.
Pretty much my 'go to' garden centre in York. Everything you could imagine on the garden front, and helpful staff on hand when needed. There is also a large indoor area covering all things garden too, so worth a visit even on a wet day. The special attraction here however is The Bothy. It's regarded as a cafe, but it's so much more. Lovely restaurant standard grub. Just a warning that it does get pretty busy though as many locals visit just for the food ! Good accessibility, ramps in place and a decent sized restroom for disabled users. All in all, well worth a visit !
M. T.
Lovely garden centre with a huge range of gifts, plants and food. The Bothy cafe is always worth a visit for a decent lunch or just for a coffee!
R. W.
Food was delicious and the recently renovated restaurant was nice and bright & airy
M. P.
First time in an independent garden centre in the UK. Given the odd situation we are all in my wife and I commented on how safe it felt. Will have to try the cafe another time (looked good) and their overall range was brilliant. We will be back and likely many times.
F. C.
Excellent lunch, great choices, good value, staff very helpful. Lovely setting, would recommend
L. R.
Lovely food and fast service even when busy we eat here as often as we can truly recommended
D. P.
Got what I needed and more as always. Such a good variety and mostly a great price. I did hope for some smaller outside plants for cheaper maybe that won't grow until next year really but still managed to come away with loads.
L. D.
Any problems with gardening the staff are knowledgeable and very helpful.
Garden centre itself is kept clean and tidy plants are always well watered and healthy looking.
Love to spend time browsing them always something new.
New cafe/restaurant serves food to suit all, staff and tables always clean and tidy.
New toilets are so clean you could almost eat your meal in them!!
M. H.
Really well stocked garden centre both indoor & outdoor a family favourite for us , also has a lovely large cafe !
Sells everything garde. Related including outdoor furniture.
Another great garden centre in York is Dobbies just on the A59 on yorks outer ring road.
C. K.
Impressed with the selection of house plants today. Lots of more difficult to find Begonias (amphioxus, cane varieties, rhizomatous), variegated monsteras, unusual orchids and in bloom succulents. Knowledgeable about care and treatments. Fair prices.
D. C.
Great selection of plants, no change 👌nice sausage bap
T. M.
This is a huge garden centre just outside York. Easily accessed by bus which is great if you cant drive like me and have a young baby. Its staff are friendly and helpful. The cafe has had a major refurbishment in the last few years so its now very spacious and can provide lots more seating. There are clearly marked signs for safety from Covid-19 and all staff wore masks. You really can pick up anything here, from gardening gifts to trees!!!
J. B.
Just been to buy decorative paving. The service provided by Ian was exceptional. He loaded the slabs onto a trolley, took them to the checkout and then to our car where he carefully placed them in the boot. He was extremely pleasant throughout it all.
D. (. &. C. O.
Love visiting Deans Garden Centre when I'm visiting my daughter in Stockton-on-the-forest. They always have an unusual selection of house and outdoor plants. Cafe is great and the staff are all very lovely.
C. P.
A very pleasant place to visit. You don't have to be a gardener to enjoy a trip here although they do have excellent plants, garden furniture & gifts. There's also a very good restaurant with an excellent, varied menu. Other good features are smaller sized portions for those who's appetite isn't quite what it was and everything is brought to your table so no struggling with trays of hot food & drinks. All in all well worth a visit.
V.
Excellent afternoon tea, highly recommended. Even given a take away box to bring back cakes we couldn't finish. Great Christmas section, we always make sure to visit prior to Christmas. Plenty of great plants to choose from, I particularly like the cacti and succulents, bought quite a few. Staff are always friendly and helpful.
C. J.
As usual a really pleasant visit. Nice and quiet on a Thursday afternoon. Lots and lots of choice ranging from flower pots to fish etc. The staff are always amiable and helpful and don't mind carrying things to your car. They also have an onsite cafe that's always excellent which also has equally good toilets. Well worth a visit every time.
M. P.
We were guided round the store by floor arrows and tape and felt safe that all this was done. Plenty of space to move around but then it wasnt very busy. Good show of plants etc.
R. W.
I only went for the restaurant tbh, which was excellent. I had the large fish and homemade chips/mushy peas which was delicious. The batter and the quality of fish/chips was excellent. One minor point the menu states served with homemade tartar sauce and a wedge of lemon I received neither. But overall 10/10 would definitely eat there again. Ps the tall gentleman with the glasses who showed me to my table your customer service was first class.
K. A.
I love, love, love Dean's garden centre and the Bothy. Lovely staff, nothing is too much trouble. Food is fresh and very tasty with a wide choice. They also extensively cater for gluten free and have an exciting range of children's food. Lovely plants and other garden items.
H.
Dean's is a good quality garden centre with attentive and helpful staff. I've been a customer for 23 years. Most recently I've brought an elderly neighbour here to get garden supplies. We've been assisted with everything from choosing plants to getting stuff to the car. There are cheaper places but none with this level of service. The restaurant is now very efficient with a great choice from sandwiches to full-blown meals. Well worth a visit.
G. C.
Wow, I loved my experience here. We went for food and I had to let them know that the fish and chips were fantastic(the fish was just so white and fresh/ beautiful). It is very rare that I really love other people's cooking when out, but our food was really amazing. The staff were so lovely and helpful.
M. S.
Good selection of everything you need garden wise .
B. F.
Lovely plants .decent price .
J. T.
Helpful staff, lovely food and reasonably priced and would recommend to anyone wishing to have breakfast or lunch
M. F.
Well stocked with a wide range of healthy looking plants/shrubs/trees. Helpful staff. Excellent cafe in a large airy area. Staff carry all orders to tables which eliminates any "dropped" trays of food from a mostly elderly clientele.
I. F.
A great garden centre lovely place to visit. Has a wide variety of all plants, tools, bird food all you need. Has a lovely cafe. Great atmosphere and surroundings
G. G.
Great garden centre. Can't believe how big this centre is full of plants shrubs flowers trees and garden equipment. Truly a gardeners haven.
Cafe has good selection of things to eat, a little pricey mind but worth it after a nice long view of the garden centre.
We bought some garden ornaments today and I'm sure it'll look cool when we do the garden up.
A. B.
I feel so full, I feel so full, I feel so full and like I need to pull off my belt off because I'm going to burst (now sing it like I feel so pretty). Wow this place is just getting better and better, I'm always here it seems but then there are reasons for this. The cafe is its own focal point, people visit just for lunch and afternoon tea and why not it's lovely in here.
Then theres the garden centre itself everything we've bought here has never died on us it just keeps going even when you think it should have died it keeps growing and returning year after year. Not a single plant I can think of that they don't have in stock and its seasonal so some won't be available until a certain times. This is so when planted its at the right time. The garden centre staff are all very knowledgeable in all matters garden. You feel very reassured once they tell you what they recommend or how something is going to turn out. In the cafe the staff are friendly and warm always smiling when assisting you, the portions though are just right not too much and not so little you'll think of the Yorkshire war cry (How much!!) ample parking as well so pop in on your way past I do.
N. G.
Such a good variety of plants and other home and garden items here. One way system with friendly staff members explaining it clearly and assurances of trolley disinfection between each use. I always come out with more than I went to get from here!
I. G.
Call in here for refreshments or a meal on way to East Coast, always been well worth it. Garden centre isnt bad either. Do quite a wide selection of snacks and full meals and very quick service.
Can be quite busy around 12 to 1 though so may have a short wait for a table
G. S.
Awesome place!!! Great range of unusual house plants. Lovely coffee shop also. Would definitely go back.
T. R.
Food coffee and service excellent. Very good cleaning & covid rules in place to make staff & customers still feel safe thank you to Deans
W. G.
Very well organised. Staff informs of social distancing at entrance. Cafe/Restaurant similarly. The centre itself has one way system inside. Outside not. Beautiful garden centre, plants alphabetically arranged so easy to find, of good quality and priced accordingly.
N. C.
Lovely garden centre with a great selection of seeds. Also, their house plants are some of the healthiest I've ever seen great selection too.
S. C.
Great local garden centre. Bothy café serves great food at reasonable prices. Friendly service and you can sit indoors or out
S. F.
We go here about once a month for lunch. The food is always good. Staff are always friendly & helpful.
J. L.
Great garden centre with fantastic selection of plants, all well cared for and watered. Some good offers on multi buys too all at good prices. The Bothy restaurant has a wide menu for snacks, light lunches etc and serves delicious scones and cakes. Highly recommend.
A. W.
We have just had lunch in the cafe which was beautiful as always. Since re opening the protocols in place for COVID-19 are fantastic. The reason I’m writing this is we have unfortunately just had a little accident in the cafe where my 10 months old baby has just pulled a cup of latte all over himself (He’s fine, just abit red on his legs!) The staff were fantastic, we got him straight into a sink of cold water, more staff sorted the table out we couldn’t of asked for anymore help . Thank you all once again x
R. B.
Most enjoyable visit with friendly helpful staff and very efficient restaurant. Although in a secluded location outside if York, it's well worth a visit with ample parking.
The Bothy, restaurant, is well worth a visit with quality generous portions from a varied menu. 😎💙🇬🇧👍
C. P.
An amazing riot of colour but didn't
have the one item I went for.
S. A.
Deans Garden Centre has everything you need & more! Fabulous Cafeteria, excellent service & delicious food - you wouldn't be disappointed. The staff are friendly & very helpful. Their range of plants & shrubs, garden furniture, landscaping materials etc has quality written all over it. It's a "must place to visit".
S. J.
Absolutely fantastic service! I’m in Cardiff and wanted to arrange delivery of a plant as a gift to York. They were so helpful and accommodating nothing was too much trouble. Would highly recommend and definitely deserve 5 stars!!
H. S.
Love this place for a lunch meet up. Great value food and good portions. IKEA high seats available and great changing facilities. Small child's area for 3 plus years I think to help keep them shortly amused. Love to wander around the plant nursery after.
K. J.
One of my favourite places ever!! Great array of indoor plants, succulents and cacti which are my weak spot. Always spend too much after payday. Staff are fantastic and never have any issues ordering anything in or giving advice. Our main go to guy (forgetten his name sorry) even saved us cucamelons once knowing we couldn't make it for another day when stock was getting low and had ordered them in specially out of interest we'd shown. Food in the restaurant is gorgeous here too and award winning. Xmas is always a special time there and their community work is admirable
M. L.
Loved it. It's a very big garden centre. Its a bit far out from York but worth the trip. We trust the plants from here, everything we have bought has florished in our garden and we found what we were looking for this time plus a couple of other things we saw whilst there.

A fantastic garden centre full of interesting, lovely plants. There is a cafe, which I didn't frequent, but looked like a good one. It is easily accessible, with a large car park. This is easily one of the best garden centres in York, if not the best. We bought a cheap plant (we were on a strict budget) but even then it was very reasonable.

Really impressed with their plants. They all look really well cared for and hydrated.

The garden centre both indoors and outdoors is methodically laid out with the different areas clearly signed making it easy to find what you want. The aisles between the plant sections are spacious. Prices are reasonable for healthy plants.
There is also a large tea room (a recent improvement) serving a variety of breakfasts, lunches and snacks with seating both outside and undercover. I found the service fast and the food plain but good at competitive prices.

A large garden centre with a restaurant or is it a restaurant with a garden centre? Excellent wheelchair access throughout the site, apart from the apiarists supply cabin which has steps.
Everything you might need for the garden from sheds to seeds although the range of seeds is limited to only two or three large suppliers. Price is what you might expect, no cheap stuff here.
The restaurant is very good with a tasty, freshly prepared selection. I would think it can be very busy at peak periods.

Excellent center, had a Sunday dinner there, as good as any pub lunch, lots off beef. Nice helpfull friendly staff. One way system on place and staff sanitised everything. Lots of stock to browse.

Very nice produce use,
Great service even with being very busy.
Just had a wonderful breakfast

I love going here and just looking around at all the lovely healthy plants. I buy quite a few too. You won't find anything out of the ordinary though and it's a bit pricey. Although it's very mainstream, it has everything including equipment for gardening and all you need for feeding wildlife. The cafe is great - nice food, plenty of seating in new building but very impressive outdoor seating in little alcoves - very nice touch! Staff do their best to help with finding the right plants. There's never anyone about when I need help putting big bags of compost or grit on my trolly but always someone there to help you get it to your car. I like that they have piles of empty boxes to transport plants home in and you can take your unwanted plant pots to be recycled. You can get some bargains when plants are reduced too.

Absolutely delightful to spend your time at the garden centre. The place is well spaced, sells a great variety of plants, shrubs and accessories, and the staff are always so helpful and friendly. Having a cafe is also an attraction especially on Tuesday nights in the summer.

Great cafe large portions good food. Plenty of choice in garden section but expensive

Favourite garden centre! Lovely selection of plants, the indoor section is my favourite and always amazes me! The staff are all lovely, friendly and knowledgeable.

Food variable, Sunday lunch in particular. Staff work very hard but not enough of them to cope with customers at popular times.

Really nice garden centre and so much more. Lovely cafe with great freshly prepared food. It is often busy but it is good quality food and popular. Garden centre has a lot of choice and an indoor shop with lots of gifts and items for your house and garden.

Appreciate the excellent service. Smart clean place to eat. Lovely selection of choice.

Staff helpful. Lovely garden centre managed to find everything i was looking for. 1st time i have been there but if i need anything for garden again this will be my first port of call

Whilst I agree with customers wearing masks inside even though it is not obligatory, I think the precautions in the toilets are not necessary. There is no need to close off urinals and washbasins to ensure social distancing. The time spent in the toilets is so minimal that the risk of exposure to covid is almost zero if customers are wearing masks

Extremely well organised for COVID-19 felt very comfortable lots of staff explaining what we needed to do . Witnessed the restaurant staff thoroughly wiping down chairs and tables when people left. We are not from the area but would definitely go back again if we were
G. W.
Purpose of the visit was to use their cafe which I had heard so much about. I wasn't disappointed. Extensive menu, quick service, friendly staff, good value for money and the food was good too.

Fantastic garden centre with a brilliant cafe attached. Their house plant section is probably one of the best in the country
I. C.
So, not one of the largest garden centres around but is plenty big enough to carry a broad and good range of all the usual garden centre goodies.
Lovely selection of indoor plants, complimented by a good range of outdoor plants along with seeds and everything else you might ever need for the garden!
Shop there on a regular basis and you can take advantage of their reward card system as well.
All in all, a garden centre local to us that we keep going back to.
And don't forget the cafe. . .

Good range of plants and products, helpful & friendly staff. Lots of plastic pots still but difficult for them to avoid as yet. Excellent food in the café, good portions and reasonably priced.
T. O.
A fantastic range of plants for indoors and outside. Also include all of the additional garden supplies you would need and an area dedicated to pond plants and products.

A great garden centre with something for everyone. Knowledgeable staff and great displays and choice of products.

Amazing food and great plants at great prices! I like to go at least once a month

My Sister and I finish off our Girly day together at Dean's fab restaurant. Coffees and a huge vanilla slice for me! The service is exemplary, the ordering system efficient and the meals are delicious. It's usually very busy but we never have to wait long until the waitress arrives with either the aforementioned cake or a portion of fish n chips, whatever we fancy from the menu to suit everyone's taste.
Then, we saunter around the huge shop and look outside at the always splendidly displayed plants. Inside now you can spend ages in amongst the very individual Xmas items. So many other lovely gifts to buy, you're really spoilt for choice and yet everything is top quality, often unusual but never overpriced. Credit must be given to the buyers for the superb choices. Xmas cards, a huge selection of different occasion cards, so much choice there too

Lovely place with friendly staff.

Hadn't been for three years I noticed they had the new both restaurant it looked lovely. Didn't go in but I am sure when we visit again we will. Had some lovely things and plenty of choice. The staff there were very pleasant and lovely.

Excellent choice of quality goods divided between garden products and non garden products.
Excellent cafe on site.
Very keen on Covid 19.

Different from usual "franchise" centres worth walking round to look at garden stuff plants and bulbs etc AND gift section but DO NOT MISS the cafe"The Bothey".
Well worth a visit (or 2 or 3 )
Cafe not cheap but neither is it expensive once you have sampled what you get.
We will be back. Christmas must be worth a visit !

Fantastic food! Standard menu plus the chef has a free hand to create wonderful & interesting cuisine on his specials board!. All local produce, fantastic!.
D. M.
Wide choice of healthy, beautiful plants changed continuously to match the seasons. There's also a quality restaurant / tea room with generous servings including local produce and ingredients. Top place
C. W.
Covid 19 precautions in place and very good throughout garden centre with one way system.
The Bothy cafe tables lots of space. Cinnamon toast delicious. Coffee always hot.

Great stop for some lunch and plants

Amazing food as usual but one of the waitresses was very rude to me when our food arrived before our drinks, I politely asked where our drinks were as they usually arrive before our food, she gave a very sarcastic response claiming the food comes from the kitchen (well where else?) and then when all the food was taken off the tray there was a tomato left on the tray, rather than leaving it and walking away, she told me to pick it off the tray. Not the usual service we get when we come. Very disappointing
H. B.
Really great garden centre and super food and friendly staff. I am not local but got a loyalty card as when we visit yorkshire we will always pop in 😁
J. B.
Brilliant garden centre, with friendly staff who know what they are doing. The cafe within the garden centre has fresh homemade food and deserts a must visit.
R. M.
Generally a lovely shopping and eating experience. However, not impressed with the section aimed purely for men, ie. signs with 'man cave', 'no women allowed', 'men's , dad's workshop' etc. If you're going to have this provision for men then can we please have the same alternative for women. I know loads of women, including myself who own workshops and have their own 'women caves!'
Dean's would be 5 star if they addressed issues like this. 👍
D. B.
The meal was poor 😢 the chips were cold and swimming in grave not to everyone taste and the vegetables weren't much better
M. m.
Excellent Beef lasagne etc. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Nice cafeteria and no jostling for seats as nice polite staff find then show you to your seat. Big garden centre and gift shopping area
J. R.
Far too expensive but some nice things to buy with a good selection,

Dean's is a modern garden centre offering everything you need for you garden such as a full range of seasonal plants, saplings, shrubs, weed killers, fertilizers, garden sheds,fencing,patio/paving, kerbing & ornaments. There is a full range of decorative fish & accessories for tanks. The main attraction is the splendid new restaurant which was added during the past 3 years. A large free park allows full disabled access but wheelchairs are also freely available at the entrance

Best garden centre in York.
Fantastic range of plants in much better health than the competition at great prices too.
The cafe feels a tad dated but the food was great, which is what really matters and that makes it a winner.
Developments are under way so will be interested to see how it all goes.
J. E.
Very good cafe. Lots of lovely things to look at. Service first class.
C. W.
Good range of plants, seeds, gardening items and gifts but the one way system very confusing. I couldn't find my way to the till on.my way out then got told off for going the wrong way. Needs clearer directions
C. Y. B.
Wide selection of seasonal plants. Prices similar to large garden centres. Covid safety measures in place. Ample parking. Quick response to email queries.

Excellent garden centre with a huge selection of plant, bushes & trees. We really enjoyed the cafè and all the staff were very polite & friendly. We will be back

Visited the new cafe today. Used to go a lot to the old one. Glad to find that we could still sit outside on a nice day and that we did not have to wait too long to order and pay. Omelettes were delicious. Very disappointed with the chips, they were hard and over done. Your chips used to be so nice. The tea was awful, weak and tasteless, why don't you Use Yorkshire tea and where was the coleslaw??
