Reviews of Cadenhead's Whisky Shop
S. B.
didn’t buy anything from this shop but it was recommended to me whilst on a tour. I went in to check it out and was pretty impressed. They can bottle specific whiskeys they have on hand in various sizes. Worth checking out if you want something unique. The staff were very friendly as well!
Only bad thing is that they’re closed on Sundays!
P. S.
The staff is excellent, knowledgeable, and patient. I’ve stopped in here on consecutive visits to Edinburgh (years apart,) with very different experience levels relative to whisky, and they were great to me both times. I HIGHLY recommend stopping in!

A beautiful oldy-worldy shop full of exciting-looking whiskies! The 2 young lads were very informative and helped me to choose a whisky for my dad based on the branded whiskies that he drinks. The bottle we chose was very reasonably priced and looks so unique as it is an independent bottler. A lovely experience
L. G.
I met the best manager Robert in here, he is one of the most friendly person and a big loss to see him retiring this year. Hope the new shop manager will keep up the standard and maintain the shop as one of the best whisky shop in Edinburgh.
A. W.
Lovely shop to deal with. Really impressed with how helpful they were. Ordered from them for delivery and they were very polite and arranged my whisky delivery for next working day. 10/10 customer service
A. O.
This is the best whisky shop in Edinburgh. They have a wide range of small whisky bottles some of which you can write people’s names on, so the bottles make great souvenirs and presents. The whisky from the living casks is great. You should definitely go if you like whisky. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff.

I went to Edinburgh in 2013 for my honeymoon. My visit to this fine place was the crown jewel for me. I bought a bottle of house whiskey, isla smokey, which was ultra petey and delicious. Tonight I just drank the final pour, about 9 years later, and it was absolutely glorious. Better than any other whiskey behind my bar (Coal Isla, Laguvalin, Ardbeg...). I am currently smashed and yet I still remember my visit to this place 9 year ago. Memorable!

After quite a bit of research as a Whisky lover and frequent traveler I decided Cadenheads would be the most authentic and personable experience we could have for a tasting in Edinburgh. Thankfully, I was right! In a rustic and intimate setting, sitting among bottles of every type of whiskey we enjoyed a personal pasting with a small group. We tried 6 different whiskies and were given time to taste, discuss and discover the flavors for ourselves with a great host. There was no pressure to buy and we just had a relaxed time enjoying great Scottish whisky!
A. H.
Awesome place, trust me when I tell you to trust them. Their hand picked casks are excellent in flavor and value. After a chat about what I liked and my budget, I tried and bought 200ml bottles of the Campbelton live cask, the Kilkerran (12 yr), and Paul John (6 yr old, sweet & peat). They were all "Wows" & value buys. Elsewhere, I have picked up their HP 26 year old small batch. That one might even be double Wow & while pricier, still a great bargain.
G. E.
Really good experience, Robert shared a tiny bit of his knowledge and made me fall in love with whisky. They're buying casks and bottling them themselves.
The 10yo bottled Glentauchers was really good. I liked the smoothness and the sweetness followed by the spiciness 😌👌
Still didn't get used to noticing all the scents and flavors but I'm on my way !
A. J. (.
Fantastic experience - took care of our personalised taste and offered with rare collection of Scottish whiskey all within our budget
S. K.
So glad we stumbled into this shop on our visit to Edinburgh! Excellent selection of rare cask ends, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and very fair prices. I highly recommend a visit.

Fab little shop. A must visit. Vast amount of stock. Not just whisky. Friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable staff. Felt comfortable to just browse however couldn't resist making a purchase. A bottle of rum which we have thoroughly enjoyed although a slight complaint being that it didn't last long enough 😉 the lovely glasses that we bought are our little souvenir not being from the area. We will definetly be back on our next visit to Edinburgh ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

As the oldest independent bottler in Scotland, Cadenheads is the go to place for whisky in Edinburgh. Whether looking for yourself, or a gift someone - their selection of rare and unique bottles is outstanding. The staff is really knowledgeable and helpful - if whisky is your thing, don't miss this shop. My suitcases went home far heavier than they left because of this place...
E. S.
This is the place to go if you are looking for a wide range of whisky. They have everything from inexpensive, to top shelf. They even sell the cask ends, which are of a higher alcohol content, and are also cheaper than buying a full size bottle.
J. I. (.
An independent bottler of my personal favorite distillery. I came back because I didn't have the whisky I'm looking for, but I'm going to visit you one more!
L. C.
I went on a whisky tasting the day before and the guide recommended this shop. I was intrigued, as I heard it was the oldest shop in Edinburgh! I popped in fairly early and was happy to be the only visitor, as it was quite a small shop and I didn't want to knock anything! I spoke to Josh, who was lovely and helped answer my questions. I found some of the whisky brands I drank the night before, but in the end, went for Josh's recommendation for one of the Cadenhead's special bottled whisky, called LONGROW. I just explained the flavour I wanted and he selected a bottle for me. The taste was perfect for me and my boyfriend, so that's how I know they are good at their job! Thanks and hope to visit again next time!
J. M.
Very friendly and helpful service. They have truly unique whisky options. I will definitely recommend you try this.
A. H.
Cadenhead’s are a whisky institution, always hundreds of unique bottles to choose from at reasonable prices. My only complaint is the lack of Islay and Peated whiskies in stock recently.
N. A.
Greatest whisky shop (and oldest Independent Bottlers) in Edinburgh. 10/10 would recommend. Well worth the trip down Canongate (just follow the Royal Mile down from the castle towards Holyrood Palace!).
S. K.
Absolutely no pressure sales to sell you expensive bottles , know what your taste is and take their advice on their own bottled whiskies , the kilkerran 12 cost under 50 pounds , would easily be more than over 70 further up the royal mile- from past experience . Certainly have found my whisky shop for the future .
M. S.
Amazing experience going around the shop and talking to Tony. Will definitely come back when I'm back in Edinburgh
B. !.
Absolutely first class! It is so refreshing to go into a specialist shop and speak with staff that know what they are talking about.
I could've spent a small fortune if the wife wasn't with me! Top blokes that know their stuff and Whiskey that is fantastic! I absolutely recommend the Single Malt Berinnes Distilled 20 yr old. Absolutely mazing!!
K. C.
Didn't do a tasting but stopped by to purchase a few bottles. Love that they're an independent bottler so the selection is unique! The employees were incredibly helpful with providing tasting samples and recommendations. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to try/buy whisky in Edinburgh!
J. F.
Excellent!!! Not a tourist trap like the ones up the royal mile. Great selection and fair prices. A rare combination. Will return
K. K.
One of the best whisky shops in Edinburgh. Expect to find real gems here, stuff you will not be able to buy anywhere else. These guys bottle their own stock from various distilleries. No chill-filtration, no colouring, usually single barrel as well. Simply outstanding. Definitely worth a visit if you are after a special bottle of whisky.
A. C.
Very knowledgeable staff, helped pick out small batch bottles based on a selection of flavour profiles. Because they bottle their own you can get 200ml bottles and leave with a wonderful selection.
A must stop for anyone interested in Whisky or spirits.
S. H.
Great shop, Craig is a really helpful top chap. They've got some great whisky and exiting releases are never far away. Can't wait to pop in when I'm next in Edinburgh! Thanks guys
C. A.
Was recommend by a local as they are an independent bottler so you can get something special here. The staff are amazing and took time to talk over their collection and give me several tasters of the various options.
Really recommended if you are looking for a special whisky
T. S.
I love this little whisky store. Being able to buy small bottles is great, since you can take home several different things for a reasonable price. Staff are very helpful and knowledgeable.
A. D.
Unique product selection and a friendly staff with excellent product knowledge. It is genuinely pleasing to find a shop where the staff are so happy to help a customer. A nicely understated store that focuses on quality rather than fancy marketing. A much better choice than some of the stuffier stores and peddlers of tourist rubbish found elsewhere.
P. S.
This is a must place to visit when you are in Edinburgh. Me and my husband could not decide because of the huge selection and we received great recommendation that fit to our taste. We got the warmest welcoming customer service and definitely coming back!
J. S.
Young and amazing staff, you will enjoy their variety of whiskeys through numerous tastings. Selected casks bottled by Cadenhead’s + other classic distilleries. Had a lovely moment. We definitely recommend.
T.
Great selection with amazing staff who really know their whisky. Place to go if you want to find something special. They were really helpful when I was after something that was difficult to obtain.
E. W.
If you want to do a proper whisky tasting while you are in Edinburgh, go to Cadenhead's. (And definitely book ahead to make sure you get a spot!) Staff were friendly, very knowledgeable, and had a lovely variety of whiskies from light to peaty. I would most definitely come back!
Z. P.
Very resonable & satisfying price for their bottles. Staff are really welcoming & knowledgeable, offering us testing for those we're interested. Definitely a must-go for whisky lovers.
T. T.
The look and Decor of this place really could make you walk in and straight back out again, it is desperately in need of a makeover, but don't do that, you really want to actually go inside and take in the atmosphere, speak to the guys about whisky and try (if you can) or buy some fantastic single cask bottles that you just can't get anywhere else.
One of the best real whisky shops around.
B. E.
A small shop with a remarkably good collection to choose from, very friendly, helpful, and hugely knowledgeable staff. I was particularly looking for a range of Springbank whiskies, and it was great to meet the lads who had worked in the distillery in Campbeltown. I was there mid afternoon on a dull Thursday, so it was fairly quiet, and I was offered a range of samples and plenty of descriptions and advice. An unhurried explanation of some of the best whiskies I've tasted, so this will be a regular detour on any trip through Edinburgh in future.
Came home with a green label 14 year old Springbank, my first Longrow (a 12 year old from fresh Pinot Noir barrel, with lots more than peat to entertain), and a Hazelburn 'Rundlets and Kilderkins', which is amazingly complex and smooth, and tastes much more than its 10 years old.
P. P.
Lovely olde worlde shop and very helpful staff to advise this 'quaffer' of the whisky to suit my taste and budget. A credit to all concerned!
P. N.
Best Whisky Shop in Town! Really lovely and helpful staff, great Whiskys and cute shop. I can only recommend it!
E. J.
Nice and friendly staff lits of Whiskys from all Region of scotland only downpoint was the small variaty of Whiskys from islay or smokey ones. They have a nice variaty of smokey ones but more of the "big brand" whiskys.
Nonetheless i can recommend the shop
T. S.
What a lovely shop !! All kinds of high class whisky. (They even had my favourite fra Glenrothes) A Kind owner and a friendly dog walking around in the shop. Why don't we have that sort of shops i Denmark ?
R. H.
Charming old-world looking shop that's full of some delicious spirits, rum and whisky sold straiught from the cask and by the bottle along with some delicious gins. Relaxed, friendly staff who are more than happy to chat away to anyone from the whisky novice to the expert. A great place for a gift to take home as their bottlings aren't that widely available (and are delicious)
A. G.
Great selection of whiskey. You can find some unique bottles.
M. E.
Fantastic selection of whisky, especially if you enjoy independent bottlings. Extremely friendly staff who are happy to give advice and suggestions if you are not sure exactly what you want.
J. K.
Beware the Whisky Nazi!
They seem to be struggling to cope with a great number of visitors looking for free samples (They do NOT provide free samples!), attributing this inconvenience to Rick Steves. Unfortunately, this creates a negative attitude in general towards potential customers. I would've purchased more had I not felt so unwelcome.
If it's crowded, come back early the next day, or maybe wait outside. You may have a better experience.
That said, the products are well worth the effort.
L. R.
Best Whisky shop in Edinburgh. Great choice of rare whiskies and single casks. Really authentic. Staff is really nice and will give you good advices.
R. W.
Gem of a place. small and tucked away. This is not a place to "taste" Whiskey there are other places to go for that. This is a place to go to really purchase some exquisite choices. to be clear you can get a sample or two but you should arrive at this place with a knowledge of what you like and then they can help guide you down to the rad to satisfaction. If your smart you'll take home a little of their finest.
J. S.
Actually, one of our favorite experiences in Edinburgh. the man helping us was so friendly and knowledgeable and you could tell that he really just loved whisky. A very painless buying experience
A. E.
Impressive knowledge and service. I appreciate the fact I got to taste the ones I was curious about. Reasonably priced and overall a good experience.
C. S.
Amazing selection of Scotch whiskeys and very experienced staff. Do yourself a favour and pop in for an informative and entertaining evening whiskey tasting session.
D. A.
Excellent range; excellent staff; a great place to pick up whisky that cannot be acquired anywhere else.
J. C.
This place is amazing. Its a small little shop that you can get high quality scotch bottled for you on location. Lots of whiskey related items as well.
K. N.
So helpful! And such selection! They let us try so many different whiskys, and the young man helping us was so friendly (and adorable) and not at all pressuring us to buy anything.
R. S.
The workers there really know their stuff 👍
D. M.
Thought I could get Springbank straight from the cask at cask strength. This turned out to be Campbletown "blended" malt. Sure at cask strength but when I asked the age I was told, 6/8/10/12years with a shrug. There was NO mention of this being a blended malt until I looked at the label that the guy stuck on the bottle after filling! This cask of 'Cambletown' malt is obviously topped up with whatever they get sent albeit from Cambletown. Ditto the Islay "blended Malt". My strong advise.....be wary, make sure you know precisely what you are buying. If you want a good single malt whisky, then buy a sealed properly labelled bottle. That way you know exactly what your getting.

L. S.
Fun from the outside, interesting at first but the spirits they have in cask are old, musty, stale and not worth it. Some obscure stuff here but very hit and miss.

Always direct visitors to Cadenhead's for their gift purchases.

(Translated) I would like to recommend this barrel maker to everyone. Their family is not only the oldest barrel maker in Scotland, but also produces quite good products. It is a must-see itinerary when you visit Scotland. Whiskey itself is a tourist feature in Scotland. You can find your favorite whiskey in this store, whether you drink it yourself or give it as a gift, it is a good choice. In addition, I recommend everyone. If you have the ability, you should go to their main store to have a look. The distance is a bit far. In campbelltown, there is Springbank, which is the favorite of whiskey lovers. Amway, thank you

Great advice and a bargain compared to Germany in its own bottlings.. Saved a whopping 35 euros on a bottle! The selection in the shop is great, the atmosphere is original and the employees are very friendly and generous when it comes to tasting.

(Translated) A place where whiskey is more than just the whiskey you know
You can meet a lot of independent labels, and tasting is also possible. Almost all independent labels are limited editions, so it is advantageous to buy them.
The staff have expert whiskey knowledge and are good at making recommendations.
It is fun to see whiskeys that can be purchased and whiskeys that are sold out and discontinued whiskeys are displayed on the status board. A must-see
