Reviews of Summerhall Distillery

What a great tour and tasting session! Well worth a visit. Highly recommend the Cheese and Gin Cocktails tasting as the guide was friendly, knowledgeable and following a recipe you get to make your own cocktails. "Shaken or Stirred" If you love gin cocktails and cheese this is the tour to pick. There a 3 seasonal gins paired with 9 different locally sourced cheeses.
L. D.
A great gin and cheese pairing experience with Marina, out host. She is really knowledgeable and taught us how to make three really nice and well presented cocktails. The session was full of historical details regarding the origins of the gin. Really recommended!
B. H.
Great experience, the tour was very fun, an interesting origin story and the tour guide Marina was very knowledgable and friendly. We were in a small group and the other people on the tour spoke little English and she managed to flick between English and French throughout the tour which was very impressive and lovely that she went above and beyond to improve their experience! The samples were tasty and we bought a bottle of the orange top gin which was incredible :)
The location was very cool, it was once a veterinary college and is now an arts complex (distillery, brewery, pub, concerts, art exhibits and even axe throwing!)
Would highly recommend this tour and gin experience!
P. M.
Had a private tour with Jamie for daughter-in-law’s to be hen do.
Fantastic, friendly and fun with Jamie keeping us all in check but joining in the banter.
Jamie is very knowledgeable about Pickerings Gin and with the tastings, with or without tonic, getting our reactions correct.
Great tour, if in Edinburgh you must do it
J. M.
Amazing gin tour - very informative and fun. Our tour guide, Eloise, was great! The welcome gin on arrival was delicious. You then sample 4 gins. The Gallery Bar is a great spot for a pre-drink and/or post drink too! Highly recommend the gin tour here (and a bargain - only £15).
T. S.
I have been on a lot of distillery tours and Pickering's would rank solidly in my top 3. Our guide, Alyssa, really helped to bring the experience to life. She talked us through the ingenuity of pickerings and the history of this fantastic little distillery. No smoke and mirrors here, just excellent gin, which was served in very generous measures.
All in all, it was a fantastic experience and we cannot wait to go back and visit again.
K. R.
Had a fantastic tour of Pickering's small but mighty operation with tour guide, Marina. Not only do they make one of the best gins (and by far the best in Edinburgh), the staff is super nice and knowledgeable about gin and Pickering's past, present, and future plans. The tour is super informative and fun; Marina is awesome and even responded to some emailed questions after our tour. Highly recommend spending some time at Summerhall!
K. G.
Outstanding tour of a small batch gin distillery. The tour guide Jamie was very engaging and entertaining and the 1.5 hours definitely flew by. The operation is quite a small and tight unit but Jamie made it very deliberate and kept us attentive with jokes and anecdotes. Great to see some behind the scene gin making. Highly recommend.
M. K.
We had such a great time with Jamie as our guide throughout the history of Pickerings, and having the opportunity to sample a range of 4 fantastic gins - and the welcome G&T was definitely appreciated too!
The only thing which could have been done to make this experience perfect, was potentially having a dedicated space for the gin sampling section. With this just happening stood around a desk in the shop area, out of small plastic shot sized cups, it just slightly took away from the experience.
Jamie was amazing though, and the gin was so great that we purchased extras to bring with us!
P. C.
The Peacock tail tour is highly recommended. It was great to sample Pickering's gins in context of the story of gin. Alyssa was a fantastic host and helped everyone on the tour enjoy the whole experience!
M. B.
When in Edinburgh, you must visit Summerhall Distillery and sample Pickering’s Gin! It’s delicious!
E. B.
Very nice experience! We have been in this small distillery on July 28th , we were a small group , me my girlfriend and another swiss couple. Our guides Sophie and Courtney were really super friendly and experienced, we had a great time and tasted some amazing Gin. Highly recommended!
J. B.
Eloise is fantastic. Definitely the best distillery tour we've been on. Full of excellent information that was really useful and great to see a company trying to be eco friendly and innovative. Really impressed and definitely my number one gin choice now. Would recommend a tour and the gin.
O. S.
I went on a wonderful tour led by Alyssa who went through the whole history in a wonderfully entertaining way! Afterwards, Courtney led the tasting and I must say I am a gin convert! Thank you Pickering's for a wonderful tour!
N. V.
Sophie was an absolutely fabulous tour guide. Full of enthusiasm and well told stories. A great gin tasking experience!
R. P.
We rather spontaneously booked the Peacocktail Tour, like less than one hour before it started, and that turned out to be a slight problem. 🙈
We were supposed to be picked up in front of the Summerhall building at 4:20pm and in the email they unapologeticly told us thay they would not wait for latecomers.
So we were there at 4:20 sharp. By 4:30 we asked at the distillery and were told that the guide might run a little late and we should wait. Ten minutes later, still nothing. We asked yet again and after some minor turmoil it turned out that they simply didn't check for new reservations in time.
But after that was all sorted out, we had a great time! The guide was knowledgeable and funny, we got to try some great gin and learned quite a few interesting things. I enjoyed it thoroughly despite not being much of a gin fan!
T. B.
We had an incredible time with Marina on her gin & cheese pairing experience!!! Don't miss this.
J. B.
Though the distillery itself is relatively small, the tour and tastings are worth it! Our tour guide (Rebecca) was knowledgeable, fun and enthusiastic. We learned a lot about Pickering's itself, and gin in general. Plus, the complimentary G&T and tastings are great. We loved the tour...and love their gin
F. a. F.
A great gin-spirence! You learn all there is about how Pickering’s gin came to be and where it is today. It’s a great little tour that gives you a first hand taste of gin (and then you actually get to taste the gin!) This was a surprise and I enjoyed every minute! (And don’t forget to get your baubles!!)
N. D. S.
Dynamite comes in small packages. This distillery is small but their tour is a winner very interesting and the tasting at the end great fun! Rebecca is super energetic and fun! My favourite gin is the Navy strength
T. Y.
Participated in the Gin Jolly tour and was very pleased. You get a G&T before the tour starts. You walk to the distillery, and our guide Sally, was perfect! Talked about the history of gin, how and why Pickering was started, and even did a gin tasting at the end. The puns were plentiful and free (I am a pun lover)!
G. L.
Went on the Gin Jolly tour which was informative and inspiring when you hear the history. Unfortunately due to latest lockdown measures we couldn't taste on site. Distillery gave Gin to take away but this was really missing from the tour as I was salivating surrounded by all this gin. Maybe if measures allowed a" sniff "would have been something to consider?
D. S.
Proud to be third person to rate these great gins. Selection is surprising for such a young distillery and you can really feel people behind the busines being passionate. Navy strength gin was good but way too strong for sipping but oak aged gin you can get in bar for 5£ was excellent for this purpose. There seems to be fair selection of food to order in the bar as well. Tour highly recommended !!
J.
Really enjoyed the tour and the tasting. Our tour guide Alyssa was brilliant. It was entertaining and we got to taste gin neat and in cocktails. Make sure you have some food beforehand!
L. B.
A must do if you are planing to visit Edinburgh! Sooo much fun, great ambiance, learned a lot about the origin of gin. The Pickering history is amazing, you will be surprise to find out how small it is. Our guide Alyssa, was the sweetest and bubbliest person, a very talented speaker . Highly recommend this activity , book early!
D. M.
Great tour of the distillery with nice stories from the recent foundation, development and technical display.
We had an initial G&T and four samples at the end for a great price.
The guide, Marina, was funny and engaging in her tales.
Recommended!
J. V.
Small distillery with a very charming story. And our ”story teller”, tour guide was top notch: funny, informative and very enthuastic. And the testing part included 3 different gin, so plenty ”bang for the buck”.
M. F.
Fantastic visit to a little hidden gem off the beaten track in Edinburgh. Marina was a fantastic guide, and had so much enthusiasm about the products which came across in her tour. Not only do you get a whole background story on the tour of how the place was set up, but you also get tastings too, what could be better?
A. S.
Absolutely brilliant jolly gin tour for my friends hen party, Jamie made the tour lots of fun and knew his stuff. Fun morning, lots of laughs and lots of gin too. Would definitely take Jamies tour again.
B. M.
Had a really enjoyable tour and tasting. Marina (tour guide) was funny, knowledgeable and personable. I recommend the tour and the gin.
S. a. B.
The tour was fantastic! Our tour guide, Eloise, made the tour very fun and enjoyable. The gins were great, and it was cool to find our how they are all made, as well as learn about the history of the distillery. Would definitely this as the gin tour to do in Edinburgh!
S. T.
Great gin tasting tour. Eloise was very engaging and knowledgeable! Interesting talk with enough detail on the history of the company and then lots of tasty gin at the end! Second time I’ve done the tour, love it.
G. K.
Eloise gave us a fascinating and informative tour of one of Edinburgh's premier gin distillery!
A.
Really enjoyed our gin tour, so informative and learnt some lovely little surprising facts and local stories! The story of Pickerings so far is fun and interesting and the people working there are really passionate about what they do ! Our guide was Eloise and she was amazing, really knowledgeable, funny and great at bringing the stories to life. We had 5 samples which went down a treat ☺️☺️🍸🍸
R. R.
Our guide Jamie was great. We learned a lot about gin and he was intertaining. Starting off with a Gin and Tonic to start the tour didn't hurt either.
A.
Great gin tour, highly recommending it if you're in Edinburgh. My friend and I really enjoyed it. The distillery is small but the tour is really interesting. Jemma our tour guide was very nice and informative. Thank you again to Jemma and Eloise for the gin tasting experience!
S. H.
Really nice and interesting tour inclusive tasting. Would definitely recommend it to everyone in Edinburgh.
E. G.
A lovely little hidden gem of a tour. Marina is fantastic, knowledgeable and funny. Includes a drink, tour and samples. The gin itself is delicious and it's impossible to come away without buying more.
O. T.
We visited Pickering's Gin Distillery on the 9th September. Elouise was our tour guide and was great. Very fun, many funny stories but informative. Ofcourse the gin tasting was the best bit for me.
We were on holiday and staying in a hotel with a very small gin Distillery and had done this the day before but because we were disappointed with it my husband suggested we spent our last day in Edinburgh and book on to this. So glad we did was worth it. Even more so had plenty of gin with husband not being a big gin drinker but he still really enjoyed it. I would recommend this to anyone who likes gin but even if not a big gin drinker it's still a good tour. I purchased gin from the shop after that I can't wait to drink. Thank you Elouise. Great end to a holiday.
R. P. H.
Super distillery tour at pickerings Sumerhall Edinburgh. The guide was super informative and passionate about their gins with 5 to taste during the tour. I'd recommend it to any Gin lovers as part of an Edinburgh weekend break .
L. A.
Went for a gin tour and was so interesting. The tour guide Jemma was amazing and made us laugh - top marks for her! Would highly recommend. Such an interesting story behind the brand and I've now decided to only drink Pickering's gin from now on!
R. J.
Sophie our tour guide was fab...funny interesting and knowledgeable...kept us all interested!
T. B.
We went on the tour, and it was great! It's really interesting to hear all about how their gin came to be, and all of the staff are lovely.
Our tour guide Jemma was really insightful and enthusiastic! And we were VERY excited to have the chance to buy some of their small batch gin for valentine's day!
I would definitely recommend going to the tour, but if that's not your thing, at very least visit the pub and grab a drink, we will 100% be coming back for more gin!
L. P.
The tour was fun and our guide was very informative. I would highly recommend!
T. H.
A must do when in Edinburgh, my wife and I visited on the 15th of October we were greeted by Eloise as our guide, her knowledge and enthusiasm was brilliant.
This is a great little distillery run by a small team with a passion for what they do, I would definitely recommend this experience.
S. R.
We paid £10 for the tasting tour and we're glad we did - what a great experience. In their bijou distillery Pickering's have created a little gem: the tour is in turns fascinating and funny. You really get a sense of the families and characters behind the firm, and it's a great story. Definitely a worthwhile use of the time and a bargain to boot. And don't forget to take away some of their produce!
J. B.
Fantastic tour. Our guide, Dougal, thoroughly explained the history of gin and the distillery with the perfect amount of puns. The tour is not like most, just a number a facts, but interesting with various anecdotes. The price is very decent as you get a G&T at the start, get to taste 3 gins and you get a small gin bottle at the end for just £15. Can highly recommend!
S. O.
Victoria was a fantastic and knowledgable guide. We had a wonderful time. G&T was very good. Highly recommend
N. S.
I’d booked this tour about a month in advance of our trip to Scotland, I was very much looking forward to it. Fortunately it met and surpassed my expectations. I’d never tried Pickering’s Gin before, it’s not very widely distributed where I live in Indiana, USA. But I wanted to tour there based on the fact it’s the first new gin distillery in Edinburgh in 150 years.
We arrived and were greeted with a G&T, then walked into the distillery with our guide Victoria. She gave us a very thorough and entertaining history of gin and how Pickering’s came into being. It’s a great story and my hat is off to the two founders and the rest of the staff.
We ended the tour with a tasting of the 3 standard gins produced there. Each had its own character and made a very difficult decision on which to buy and bring home with me. I’m looking forward to going back to the US to start spreading the Gospel of Pickering’s!
E. L.
Did the tour of the distillery with Jemma and honestly it was one of the highlights of Edinburgh for me.
1. The story of the distillery is really interesting
2. The building itself has a lot of fun facts and trivia and is so striking.
3. Jemma was hilarious and very well able to keep the tour on task.
4. The gin was delicious.
In value for money, time, experience, everything this was a solid 5/5. Could not recommend this tour more.
k. t.
Such a great tour with tastings. Lovely time.
N. M.
Jen was our host for the tour. Wow she was brilliant and is a real asset for Pickerings. She gave the most enthusiastic, informative, fun and polished talk I have ever known. Oh the gin is really good too. This was a superb experience and gets top marks for things to do in Edinburgh. It's really popular so book early. Located in the former university veterinary school, now an arts centre called Summerhall and really interesting too. Well done Jen (Gin).
A. H.
Had a really great tour today at Pickerings! Victoria gave an informative, exciting and very funny tour through the distillery. Super delicious G&T and three neat gins included. Would 100% recommend it!
M. M.
Amazing gin tour - Eloise was fantastic. So happy we visited
L. K.
Went to Pickering's for their tour. Beautiful little distillery, starting their tour at the bar with a Gin and Tonic of course. This one's included as well as 3 shots of different gin flavours. Jenny was a lovely guide, told us about the history of gin, showed different botanicals and told stories about the owners of Pickering's.
Because the whole process of making and bottling is located in two rooms, it was more a standing together than walking around. But that was totally fine.
Thanks to Pickering's Gin and the Royal Dick Bar at Summerhall for this nice evening.
T. P. (.
Eloise did an amazing job could ask for a better tour guide. What a little gem in Edinburgh. Definitely worth a look awesome story and love to see small business grow
E. M.
Great afternoon in the distillery at the tour. Not a long tour, but very informative and relatable to guests no matter what their previous understanding of gin is. Erica (our tour guide) was great, happy to answer questions and more importantly, supply us with lots of tasters if gin during our time there.
Highly recommend it to any gin enthusiasts
i. R.
We have been on a number of whiskey/gin tours and this was one of the best! Value was amazing, 10$ for a gin and tonic and a 3 gin tasting, in addition an extensive tour and history of not only Pickering's Gin but Gin as well. Google maps gets you to the area but you have to go in the courtyard to get there.
G. B.
Great tour. They make it last considering how small the distillery is. Our guide dougal was easy on the eye and hard on gin (prepare your oesophagus for the navy strength). Worth an hour of your trip if you like gin.
C. N.
Great tour of the Pickering's Gin facility, with a very enthusiastic guide. Wonderful gin. The tour included a gin and tonic with pink grapefruit, it really hit the spot. Highly recommended, if you a hour to spare whilst visiting Edinburgh.
R. S.
Firstly I tried to book online and couldn’t due to availability. So I phoned the next day and they took my details and said if they could fit us in they would contact.... I really didn’t think they would. I got a call Thursday eve and yep they did. We arrived and got a lovely gin and tonic using their classic gin. Elouise and I can’t remember the other woman’s name but they were both very informative, funny and energetic hosts throughout. The history of the gin to date was great and the gin tasting itself 👌. If your looking for a good tour and some gin tasting whilst your in Edinburgh Pickerings gin distillery will not disappoint and very good value at £10 per head
T. B.
Tiny gin distillery just south of the centre of Edinburgh. The host had the enthusiasm and knowledge to keep everyone entertained for an hour in the small working space with history and insight into the Pickering's set-up. Well worth the £10 cost with a gin and tonic included and samples of the three core Pickering's gins.
S. M.
My wife and I came to Scotland on our honeymoon and in my infinite wisdom I forgot to book a distillery tour in advance. I ended up on the phone with Victoria, who was able to squeeze us into a Pickerings tour and save the day. We are now Pickerings fans for life and it's the only gin we'll buy. Our tour guide, Sally, was hilarious. At the end of the tour Victoria and Sally gave us local recommendations and were wonderfully kind. The Pickerings tour ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. We learned a lot about gin, tasted a variety of gin, had a lot of laughs and met incredible people. The tour was an overall delightful experience.
C. G.
A great alternative to the bigger distilleries in the city. Jemma was knowledgable, and enthusiastic about the tour. The tasting at the end as well as the perfectly poured G&T at the beginning makes it great value for money.
The only negative was that there were 16 people in our group, and with the distillery essentially only consisting of 1 room, it made it a bit crowded.
V. A.
A fantastic tour and history of the gin distillery by Eloise. She provided a very entertaining and detailed account of how the company came to be and provide the public with award winning Gin. Highly recommend the tour.
P. N.
We came here as part of the Fringe Fesitival and then came back a second time and both times were fantastic. Not only is their gin some of the best I’ve had but their location and staff are amazing. Learning the history of gin from them was amazing and then learning the story of how they started really makes you feel as if you are part of the history they are creating there. This is one place for sure I will be sending people for sure in the future, also with the hopes of them bringing me back some of that amazing gin
P. R.
Really enjoyed this tour. Really fascinating and informative. Alyssia was great fun and made the whole experience an absolute joy. Highly recommended.
C.
We took the distillery tour during which we learned quite a lot about gin. Interactive and warm welcome, our guide was open to questions (and could answee them all!). Wonderful to see how it started merele by the love to distill gin and how the experementing still goes on. Definetely worth a visit!!
K. W.
A great tour discovering the unlikely story behind this booming Gin hit. I had a great tasting experience and gained a newfound appreciation for Gin and the different varieties and ways to drink it. The staff are really approachable, and you can buy their Gin's on premise or online. Best get in line though if you want a shot at their christmas gin baubles.
A. C.
Fantastic tour and great value for money. Our tour guide Victoria was brilliant and lots of gin to sample! Definitely worth a visit on your trip to Edinburgh.

We missed the tour, but the girl working there let us in to try some samples and we ended up buying a bottle each. Fantastic gin, and we really appreciated the impromptu tour!

E. C.
The tour was amazing value, and Elouise was a great guide! So much gin included in the price of the tour - well worth a trip to summerhall!
N.
Delightful little tour with one of the founders. Due to the size it's not that long so justice to the attention span and finishes with a token that enables you to a free drink to try the gin. Also discounts on a purchase of the products.
D. J.
This was a fantastic small batch craft gin tour! Our guide was very entertaining and knowledgeable. And it is excellent gin!

(Translated) Definitely a distillery to visit. Good story, nice place and friendly staff. You don't get a visit with the distiller but the guide knows the story well and enough about the spirit and production process. They give you a drink when you arrive and are able to taste several gins at the end. Historic building helps create a positive atmosphere. Looks really craft almost disorganized.
Highly recommended visit. Friendly place with attentive staff and an interesting history. The tour is led by a guide and there is no opportunity to speak with the distiller but it is interesting and instructive. They offer a drink at the entrance and several tastings. The building is historic and the whole atmosphere is somewhat chaotic, enhancing the artisanal aspect.

Visita altamente recomendada.
