n. m.We went along for the fizz tasting evening. 5 different wines paired with 5 different cheeses. A full explanation of each as you go. A really wonderful way to spend an evening. We’ll be back!
R. G.I'm not a complainer, but when you spend £21 on a relatively small piece of Comte cheese and 2 scotch eggs, you would expect taste.
Cheese was a gift, so I'm not talking about that.
The eggs were tasteless, and I love scotch eggs, so see myself as a decent judge.
1 pork & mustard, and 1 traditional.
Well made, didnt fall apart, but there was no tase of mustard in said pork & mustard, not even a back taste.
Traditional wasnt any better....
Dissappointing as I have driven by this place longing to try for some time.
(Feedback on the cheese gift was it was utterly delicious, but £12 for 200g is very high)
As I say, I dont like being negative, but the eggs had to be seasoned and sauced so much, I would have been better getting 2 from the co-op next door for £1.75.
T.Starter culture is a much appreciated delicatessen on Pollokshaws Road near Langside Hall. It has a very decent range of "real" cheese, cheese accessories such as good biscuits and fruit preserves, as well as cured meats and wines. The staff are very friendly and informed. Good cheese is expensive so it's easy to spend more than you intend but if you're an aficionado you don't need to be told that! A quick browse of the wine shelves suggests an emphasis in the current marketing of "natural" wines.
B. M.Nice little shop with eclectic selection of cheeses and other gourmer delicacies. Extra star if they sold non - sourdough bread. Definitely worth a visit.
D. C.Many so called delis are actually grocery stores with a handful of continental tinned goods and some dried pasta. Starter culture has a good selection of specialist cheese and some tasty condiments, confectionery etc. Good selection of non-alcoholic drinks, although they are licenced too. 4 stars because I would like to see them extend their range to match a full blown European style deli.
E. T.Really lovely cheese shop with super friendly staff who were very helpful in assisting us with picking some cheeses for a party. They talked us through several varieties and their recommendations were spot on for what we asked. The cheese board was the highlight of our party and all our guests loved the originality of the flavours - the “Nanny McBrie” and “Halloween” charcoal & chilli cheddar were loved by all!
B. S.It's new, it's fresh, it's unique on Shawlands High Street. Staff are friendly and create a great buzz and they genuinely seem enthusiastic about the cheeses on offer and there *are* some great cheeses on offer. Disappointly, there appeared to be only a mere handful of Scottish cheeses on display. Of course it is early days yet.
The huge minus I can see is the pricing. I wonder if the business will be able to sustain itself at these premium prices.
I genuinely hope Starter Culture matures into a permanent feature on the high street. Only time will tell. For now, I'm happy to give it a plug.

A. D.As much as I like the place, with its friendly, knowledgeable staff and extensive selection of cheeses and other curated foods, unfortunately I can't bring myself to continue to patronise a shop whose pricing policy seems to be "stick a zero on the end". Eye-wateringly expensive.
