Reviews of F Cooke Hoxton

World famous. Did not disappoint! Craft beer drinkers take note… just across road from 4 Seasons. Pop over for Pie & Mash 🥧
M. H.
Very traditional experience, people are very friendly and a lot of people from the local community come here. Had the vegan pie. It is very salty compared to other ones I've had but good overall.
M. N.
The jellied eels with mash and liquor sauce are so delicious, the best jellied eels I ever had. Next time I will order a big portion :-). My toddler daughter enjoyed her pie and mash too. They do vegan pies too, so I can bring my husband who is vegetarian next time. Friendly staff and nice authentic atmosphere.

As good as ever
Totally recommend
If you've never tried it, give it a go now you won't be disappointed.
Pies are traditional old school F Cooke, from pastry to filling, with there unique liquor real traditional Eastend food.
Staff are friendly traditional Eastenders, welcoming and helpful.
Veggies are catered for too with a great meat free option which personally I think is worth a try veggie or not.
M. L.
Proper pie and mash east end style wit sawdust on the floor. Went there to try the dish and was very positively surprised of how good it was.
T. K.
The high praise is well deserved on the pies. I'm not a fan the of liquor, but that's probably because it's a new taste for me
B. I.
Found out about this place through a documentary on Prime; 'The Street' (highly recommend). No doubt it lived up to its reputation. Authentic interior - CHECK, Food quantity to price ratio - CHECK (£5 for a hearty portion of pie, mash n parsley sauce literally spilling over the plate), Cockney dinner lady - CHECK, Hard BREXIT - CHECK. As Pie n Mash shops go this place is up there.
M. D.
Old style marble tables, wood seating and cold atmosphere. Good value pies and mash and parsley liquor. Sawdust on floor and sparse decoration Should serve mushy peas but can't be bothered.

It was great to find that Cookes was still going in Hoxton and the pies still tasted the best in London as they were many moons ago. Big let down on the lack of any atmosphere as you eat & the price to feed my family was was nearly the same it cost to have a meal in the hotel where we was staying.
Dirty/chipped salt & pepper shakers, misty stained cutlery and you just get the feeling the place is just treading water before it closes. I doubt we will ever go back there, but the nostalgia value was worth the visit.
E. S.
I must say it was the most delicious pie an mash I've ever had an staff were great an I'm from north of the border so I know a good pie 😘 so Thankyou
B. B.
A proper East London pie & mash shop. No frills just excellent pie and mash all served with Parsley Liquor.
Jellied eels available of course.
Great prices and quick service.
Simple and lovely.

Happy days are usually made from food that is just simple yet hits the spot. Truly an East End icon. And after living in London for most of my life it's amazing so see some things have stayed the same when every where changes so quickly 😍.
R. L.
Authentic Pie & Mash. Staff were helpful and cheerfully answered all my questions about the shop itself and the pie, mash, liquer and eel.
Happy to recommend.
Can't say I'm a convert to the jellied eel scene though.

What a place to eat. We couldn't believe our luck stumbling across one of London's traditional pie & mash eateries. The meat pie itself was amazing....it's contents had been cooked to perfection and the pastry was like no other. Potato masher to creamy perfection and covered in traditional London liquor. The liquor (parsley gravy) is something to be savoured and just added to the pie & mash experience. If you want to dine in true cockeny fashion like it's the late 1800's-early 1900's this is the place to go. They do serve jellied eels too but we passed on that.
J. B.
Classic London fare! Met the owner too who was a gentleman. Would recommend to anyone looking for a no frills genuine food experience in London's East end.
D. R.
Exceptional pie shop with traditional meat pies and mash in parsley sauce and jellied eels. Very affordable and tasty. Quite a treat to visit.

Considering that I am from Singapore, I really liked the atmosphere in this little quaint shop - we don't have shop houses with such strong English influences where I come from. When we were planning our trip to the UK, the boyfriend was really keen and excited when recommending this place (he saw this on a travel show).
I am definitely glad we decided to make a pit stop at this place...however to be really honest, I don't know how to appreciate the food offered here. I had expected the Jellied Eels to be somewhat closer to their Japanese counterparts - also known as Unagi - and it appeared that I expected wrong. To the best of my ability, I would describe it as:
- Cold with a tinge of fishiness, covered in clear salty jelly pudding.
As for the pie and mash, I wasn't very keen on the green sauce that was drenched over. Not that it had an unusual taste, but it just wasn't suited for my taste buds.
For those curious out there, do give this shop a try! It's best if you taste and judge for yourself :)
P. L.
Wasn't the greatest pie and mash I have had. The portions were very big, but there wasn't much flavour to any part of the meal. I will be trying again, to see if it was just a bad day, but not impressed with it in afraid.
C. o.
Very nice pie mash big portions bit expensive compared to other pie mash shops but was worth it
A. J.
Went for the experience of having an English pie and mash. Was good and was what I expected. Not amazing taste or flavor, but definitely worth trying for some proper British food
P. O.
Traditional East End pie and mash shop established over 100 years.Family firm still surviving in an ever changing area.Pies as tasty as ever.
Try also the jellied eels if only once !
For youngsters growing up in the area after WW2 the pies sustained many a hungry cockney lad .
L. N.
I watched a video of this pie and mash shop
Asked my husband to take me there today with my mouth watering ...hand on the door knob push it open to find that they are filming in there...tippy toes away. Never been so disappointed 😂
J. T.
Lovely Pie and Mash run by lovely people. Fair prices and pies today were spot on 👍🏻
S. M.
I came to this place because I wanted to try English food besides fish and chips. I saw a food review clip on Youtube, and I came right away and this place didn’t disappoint me. The pie n mash was flavorful. The owner is a friendly nice old pal. Sadly, we arrived too late for the jellied eel. Will come back for that.
T. m. T. M.
Not what it used to be.. soft pastry top, tasteless liquor . Didn't really enjoy it.
Nice staff though although the shop was empty on a Saturday lunchtime.
S. G.
Great Food, served very quickly. Friendly staff. Not too expensive
B. S.
Good old pie and mash - wouldn't say it is the best i've had, but filled the hole :)
A. M.
My family have been going here since before I was born and I have been going here regularly for the past 32 years it is THE BEST made better now they deliver. The lady who delivered was lovely and polite. And the lady who took my call read back the order and told me when it would be delivered and even the cost. Very professional, never any less than the best from F Cooke's pie and mash each and everytime. 1000% RECOMMEND!!!!
T. G.
Good little traditional pie and mash shop good prices too
M. C.
Not many pie and mash establishments left in the local area. Staff are friendly and the food is good
T. O. (.
I have not been for a while because I thought they were closed due to lockdown. They are opened for takeaway. The pie and mash was to die for as usual. I need to sum up the courage to try jellied eels, but for now, strictly keeping it pie, mash and liqueur 😄 Both the owner and hostess were pleasant and very cheerful.
People, pls try this place out. Let's keep our local shops going after Covid. It would be a big shame to loose the good shops that have been well established for over 30 years. They must be doing something right!
W. G.
Sat. Lunch. Friendly staff. Very good pie and mash. Like the darker green liquor...full of flavour.
Double pie and double mash..."2 and 2".... Only £9:50.... Great value as I was full up all day. Going again this weekend for more of the same.
Typical Cookes' interior...old marble top tables...reminds me of when we used to go every Friday night as kids... Love it all.
Well worth an outing
A. W.
Great traditional shop very friendly too
D. C.
I got here late on in the day after work, however it was the best pie and mash in London. I've tried most of thr shops in north and east London, and this was the best so far. I didn't even realise it was cash only. However this wasn't a problem. I was told where the cash machine was and left to eat my dinner in peace. The ladies are doing a great job keeping the place clean and monitoring all aspects of social distancing.
The pies are the best I've tasted, light crispy pastry, plenty of meat with a good measure of gravy on the inside. The gravy was just the right thickness, with plenty of flavour.. Well worth a visit if you are anywhere near the area..
E. I.
It was one of the freshest steakpie I have ever eaten. The liquer sauce was not my favourite but steak and mash was good. I wouldn't recommend having the eel stew either for having too much bone and it is the same as having the liquer for some reason I didn't like it but I definitely would recommend steak and mash
J. C. V.
Delicious pies and mash. Service is quick and courteous.
A. 5.
Simply superb! Lovely people serving lovely food. Can't wait to return.
C. P.
I'm a Greek working in London for ten years and this was my first time trying something so traditionally English. I'm glad I did. I love the simplicity of Pie N Mash shops. A simple place for people to go and eat their hot meal, no frills- but that's exactly what makes it special. It's so lovely to visit places so integrated into London's history!
I personally loved the jellied eels. The fish was fresh and good quality, and I could tell. I was raised by the sea with fish sourced by my family so I can tell good fish :) Very enjoyable, definitely an interesting texture that takes a bit of time to get used to. Mash was homemade with real potatoes and I could tell.
Reading other reviews I cannot believe the people who moan here about the meal not tasting like they are used to it tasting in their countries. DUH, this is not a meal from your country, it will obviously be cooked differently. Every country cooks in different ways, how about trying to understand something for what it is, instead of trying to explain it using your own terms?
Staff was lovely. We were given our food really quick and left to enjoy it. Again, reading reviews here who complain about the rudeness, I think people are just too sensitive. Not every occasion in life has to be treated like if you have gone for tea with the Queen you know!
Thanks for everything, we will be back.
A. T.
Went in to get abit of late lunch. The pies were simple, well presented and well cooked, absolutely wonderful.
The proprietor was the most warmhearted and down to earth man i have ever met.
I will definently visit the place again
From one Chef to another, you make excellent pies Joe 😊
A. C.
I went to F Cooke in the end of May because I wanted to get a taste of a traditional meal in London. It was the first time I tried pie and mash and I loved it. Joe Cooke the owner and the woman that was serving the food are very polite. Unique taste, great food great service
L. R.
Best pie and mash in uk /London . Lovely authentic interior. I would eat there every day if I could but I live in Barnet. It's so worth the train journey to eat there. Wonderful staff
J. A.
This is without doubt one the best, if not, the best Pie and mash shops in London. The pies are crispy and flavoursome, the mash is honest mashed potato, not cut with the powdered stuff and the liquor is superb. A real traditional place for proper pie and mash and long may it prosper!
To those bemoaning this place (like the previous reviewer( Who on earth has gravy anyway!)) you have no idea how lucky you are to eat in one of the most traditional pie and eel shops remaining and you also obviously have no idea of what it is about and you should not let your ignorance mar this fine institution.
T. M.
Mixed feelings about the place. To be fair, I went at 3pm on Saturday, night not be the best time. Place is properly what we would call greasy spoon. The person who served me was nice and helpful. Now food wise, did get feel there is something special. But well, it’s an experience for who wants to try eel, pie & mash !
T. S.
Absolutely, hands down the best pie’n’Mash shop around. This is a Cockney legendary staple. Cooked the traditional way and tastes amazing now just as it did when I was a small kid. Joe is a top man and the pies and sides are always hot and fresh. Happy welcoming atmosphere. I’m really not understanding the neg feedback some have left, it’s obvious to me they aren’t accustomed to cockney food. But I’ve used this pie shop since a nipper So if you want the best pie mash Cookes in Hoxton market is the best.
S. B.
I'm so glad I've found a traditional pie mash shop like what my nan usto take me to as a kid. The staff are lovely, chatty and friendly.
The double pie and double mash with liquor is so delicious... The only thing I was upset about is I didn't leave room to have jellied eels 😆 as my nan usto feed me this cockney delicacie when I was a child too and I loved it!
D. D.
Went for the mince and pie with liqour. Enjoyed the setting, felt nice and traditional with a real mix of clientele.
Decent pie, mash was OK for all its lumpiness, and liquor good. Worth a visit if you're in the area
J. O.
I grew up eating pie and mash and jellied eels I liked them separately, but just going in the shop was great, and I never heard of any friends getting a bug in the tum.
Jellied eels are so good for your health plenty of vitamin A for good eye sight, and the fatty acid levels are low. My Cuban/American wife who has a better cuisine appreciation than myself forces (lol) me to go in, the only thing she does not like, is my use of fork and spoon.
I have never had a bad time in any pie shop socially, just a friendly atmosphere, and during the 2nd world war, the ordinary people needed a hot meal. When they close the last Pie shop it will be the epitaph of a great society whom were happy for basic and honest food.
M. T.
5/5 for the experience
Interesting / slightly odd staff serving up in proper cockney fashion. Authentic space and interior - very few places left like this in London.
3/5 for the food
I appreciate what they're trying to do with keeping the food simple and honest, but the pie fillings and mash are pretty bland. Think school dinner mash, but made from real potato. Add lashings of the x-hot chili vinegar to transform the dish! Eels are salty and slimey. An acquired taste. Good pie crust.
On the upside, with no luxurious ingredients I can imagine it is fairly healthy :) Would recommend going for the experience and the fact that there is also a stall outside that sells delicious brownies.
t.
We went to London for a Brian Ferry concert at the Albert Hall it was ok the best part of the trip was searching out F Cooke in Hoxton. Great experiance.I had started dreaming of pie mash and eel. Living in Burnley there's not much chance. The the food was everything it should be but the atmosphere was even better.I think the krays mum served us.She talked the wife into having the liquor and told me to keep my effin nose out.Loved it,
M. H.
Amazing no other can beat it. The food is always delicious and hot. I don't care what anyone says about others and I have tried them all. This is the best pie and mash shop in the Universe. Friendly staff too.
M. B.
What a great place. Like an old fashion butcher's shop with tables and sawdust on the floor. We had the pie and mash with liquor sauce and jellied eel. It was fun to try some East London food.
W. F.
I keep wanting pie, mash, and liquor to taste as good as it looks... and it never does. Until now. After years, THIS is the only place I'll go to. Absolutely delicious, very generous portions, everything made fresh on the premises daily, family tradition, local business, great food, chatty and friendly owner. Unpretentious. Recommended very highly!
b. s.
Great place friendly staff fantastic food a great cockney classic will be missed as I live up north
C. C.
It is cash only and only a pie place. The pies are really good and under a fiver. What much more can you ask. I like it that mostly locals go there. I found the place very cosy and if you like beef pies, there's always one ready to eat. Definitely recommend it!
j. g.
Been going hear since I was 13 years old best east London pie and mash shop around fantastic pie great mash beautiful liquor used too get jelly eels really friendly highly recommend 😋 😀
A. P.
F Cooke is an institution (served its first pie in 1862) with a simple, cheap and cash only menu - pie, mash and liquor (the cooking 'liquor' from the eels). The meat pie with mashed potato and parsley sauce has a buttery crust, bland beef filling and slightly dry mash with the sauce giving it a nice taste. The interior is basic resembling a school cafeteria.
What is outstanding is that everything is produced from scratch: the cold water pastry (different types of the pies); the meat mixture and the shop's vegetarian options. The meat is sourced from Smithfields Market and use hind quart flanks are used for the filling. Also, as part of its long-standing old age pensioner deal, the shop offers a massive plate of grub for a £1.
Two suggestions to first time visitors. The biggest faux pas of all is to ask for a knive - this place runs of just a spoon and fork. Lastly, do not mention the "g" word. Having gravy is like serving fish with boiled potatoes, not chips. Other that enjoy the pies.
A. K. R.
The original shop recently closed down. This one was started quite some time back by another brother. Proper British fare. For people from the Indian subcontinent, do give it a try before dismissing it. Although i believe most South Asians might not like the taste.
Also, quite cheap 😁
K. D.
Visited a while back and thought about their pies again today.. meaty pies, smooth mash and lush sauce. Can't wait to visit again.
J. E.
Really good pie and mash shop with a great family history behind it, got to be one of the oldest names around. Quality is good, prices are great, but if you can drift down to the Broadway Market shop for the full sawdust on the floor east end experience.
C. S.
Just received my first of many deliveries, amazing flavours, great service from everyone we dealt with, cannot wait to order again!!!!
r. b.
Back over for a trip to my birth town of London and one just has to meet up with
Friends and family and sit down to pie&mash.I was able to make to Hoxton twice
and it was a pleasure.Still the same quality as all those years ago and was able to
have a nice chat with the owner Joe who helped us with a bit more of the history.
We used to love going to Burroughs in Brixton and he told us they are all related.
Get yourself and take yer kids down to Hoxton St and treat yourselves to a wholesome
healthy meal.Wish Joe,his wife and daughter all the best and hope to be back soon,Bobby B.
T. C.
The liquor is the real thing - you can still taste the eels that made the stock and the burnt tops are properly burnt
S. P.
Have never been but these stars are from the North having watched The Street will come down when City are away in London... hopefully soon 👍
E. E.
Nice, but not the same as the one on Broadway Market, which will be missed.
G. M.
Glorious food, utterly chaotic service with friendly characters shouting at unseen people in the back room. Pies and more pies, mashed potato in a huge vat and liquor sauce. A massive display of Chilli Vinegar ....note, a good glug will lift this meal to even greater heights. It is an utter joy.
R. M.
Been going here for many years, if you like good traditional pie and mash you won't find any better.
A. T.
Great traditional food!
N.
This is arguably the best fast food restaurant in London. I don’t even live in London but I still make the trek just to get there and have a good old pie and mash with liquor.
N. C.
East End Institution, support your local to keep the history alive! Great pie

Very good Cockney grub.

Staff were friendly. I thought the pies were a bit too salty but then again it’s better than pies that don’t taste of anything...
R. E.
Lovely traditional pie and mash with liquor. Nice staff and reasonable priced menu.
O. T.
Amazing place, such nice food and lovely people. Their pie and mash is the best out there!
I. G.
Amazing place for local food. Nothing fancy, just the owner sitting there feeding his family and serving good food to other families coming in. Great food, great people.
F. R. F.

M. R.
The place and attention is great. I went to this place for the historical meaning, and well... The food was a bit bland, they have salt though.
H. C.
the food here is amazing and i have noticed these bad reviews are mainly young people so keep up the great work.
