I visited this museum last month.
All safety measures in place, its free ( no cost)to go and look around.
The staff were very friendly and polite, they also seemed to know a lot about the museum.
Takes about 90 minutes to look around, plenty of interaction for adults and children.
Was a very enjoyable visit.
Would i recommend.... yes, would i recommend... 100% yes

At the moment there is no cafe or shop. Hopefully that will change soon as things get back to normal. There are some terrific exhibits but the buildings themselves are wonderful and the views from the top floor are unbeatable. There is also a gallery devoted to temporary exhibitions and when I was there it had photographs from Ukraine which was quite poignant. A great venue and free!
C. C.
Plenty of exhibits with information, free to enter, looking at everything took a couple hours across 4 or 5 floors. A lot of Aberdeen specific history and artifacts. Definitely worth dropping by. So far both times we have been, the Cafe was closed but was nice to sit and relax. Great place to spend the afternoon with family. There were a lot of model ships so I recommend to anyone who is a model ship enthusiast even if they don't like history.
Z. S.
It’s just incredible!!! A lot of cool and useful information about offshore oil platform. Working in oil and gas industry, I was still impressed. And many interactive objects.
Surprisingly, no admission fee.
Place #1 worth visiting in the town.
C. O.
My time at the Aberdeen Maritime Museum was really fun and enlightening. It's fascinating the structure of the place, the models at the museum, and what you can actually learn there. History is brought to life over there.
C. B.
Amazing museum, it's a lot bigger and more interesting than you might expect, very well presented. Covers history of shipping, fishing, oil and gas industry and environmental issues. Some great exhibits and wonderful social history photographs. Great views of the harbour from here too. There's enough to keep the little ones interested too. It's free, what have you got to lose??
A. T.
Had great time here. The exhibits were interesting and beautiful taken care of. There are no payment or entrance fees required but small donations can be made. Would highly recommend to visit here if you're in Aberdeen and loves ships and vessels.
C. “. M.
Really enjoyed visiting here. It was very interesting and lovely displays of the oil rig and lighthouse light. Admission is free but donations welcome
R. W.
This was was an unexpected visit, as we needed to fill some time before checking out of our (Hotel Ibis) just across the street. So after some breakfast, we walked over. Very convenient location, and so worth our time, (and yours). 3 floors of wonderful exhibits, historical artifacts, way cool full size diving exhibits, artwork, and educational videos. So glad we made it in here!
C. Y.
For a free museum this was excellent! It is well worth a visit. It does a wonderful job discussing the history of the Aberdeen port/city. There are many wonderful models of ships and old paintings of ships. I definitely believe that this is something anyone visiting Aberdeen should make time for.
W.
Great place, on more floors than I first assumed. Lots of info on current diving, oil and gas as well as a good display regarding trawlers, which I was particularly interested in. Covid practices in place and good to see something open during the pandemic too.
Free entry and parking close by in NCP although it was a bit expensive for a few hours.
View of the harbour was great.
J. M.
This museum has so many wonderful items to see, you can spend many hours enjoying the maritime exhibits and watching the films. Loved my visit.
W. H.
A must when you visit Aberdeen. Coming from oil and gas industry background, I enjoy visiting this free museum. The most fascinating is the scale model of real platform that stands across 5 stories. There are also a bit of history around ports, fishing, ship building and oil/gas industries.
m.
Lovely little museum explaining the story of the relationship between the city and the sea. From shipping and fishing industries to oil and gas exploitation in more recent times. Small enough that you can see it in half hour if pushed, but an hour is plenty. Very informative, with interesting displays and interactive activities for kids.
S. n.
A very interesting museum about the beginnings of Aberdeen and the port. Covers the fishing, ship building and oil industries in the area and has interactive displays. Lots of stairs but there are lifts as well which is good. Cafe was closed when we went but not sure if that was because of hours or Covid restrictions. Worth a visit.
Z. S. K.
Loved this museum. Next to Aberdeen Harbour and ferry terminal brings history to life with place you can connect with in real time. Harbour was busy with boats coming in and out. Museum house very informative information about Aberdeen and its present status. With strong energy technology production in the area it provides crucial jobs for the town. Harbor and its docks provide lifeline for over 10000 ppl and busts local economy with £400 mill annually. Oil and wind industries are adding additional value to this beautiful town. Museum is free to visit. Worth going. Car park oposite ferry terminal is very convenient if travelling by car.
p. m.
The key attraction at the museum is the scale model of the oil and gas drilling platform that rises up 5 stories inside the museum, I suspect the museum was built around the drilling platform, which was a Canadian investment in the North Sea. Many fields are still productive but the industry focus is on decommissioning inactive fields, this is now an increasing task as many rigs date from the 70s and 80s. There is a Trent Alpha 3D film hosted by actual workers but it's not interesting and the sound quality is poor with images disturbed by flashing lights set in the ceiling overhead.
Personally I would have enjoyed more information on the great benefits the UK earned from the North Sea investment. It is after all a major success story for us all.
J. P. J. W.
Visited the Museum in May and there was lots to see! A couple of exhibits were down for repair but still tons to see! Highly recommend for those interested in knowing abit more about the maritime industry.
J. H.
This museum is free to visit and has wonderful displays of sea life including fish and mammals, oil rigs and platforms, flora and fauna. Films to watch and lovely exhibits, plus interactive displays.
T. S.
Visited this place with the kids. Staff was nice and friendly. Loved this museum. Definitely recommended.
R. S.
Absolutely stunning, free admission, clean toilets, friendly staff.
THANK YOU!
... makes me feel exploited by the english people taking money for every admission while up here in Scotland, living seems to be for free ...
O. B.
It's a welcoming environment with friendly front desk personnel. There are lots of things to see, so much that I forgot to take pictures. I recommend this to anyone visiting and loves history/oil and gas stuff
s. t.
I have been to the maritime museum a few times, I like how it tells the tale of Aberdeen over the years. The joining Provest House is almost 500 years old. There were a couple of displays not open, but there is enough to keep you amused.
P. B.
Very nice collection of marine history of Aberdeen. I really liked the oil platform model going through all floors of the museum.
R. J.
Free admission, but donated. vast array of displays of models , amazing place
T.
Fascinating museum. Extremely well laid out with plenty of interesting historical and more modern articles and items relating to the fishing and oil industries. With free entry and outstanding facilities can't rate this museum high enough! Well worth a visit when In Aberdeen.
M. W.
Great facility, given it's free, crammed full of naval history and the history of Aberdeen's maritime past. Which is what you would expect I guess! There are many levels to explore and plenty of things for kids to get their hands on. Great views of the harbour too.
S. M.
Great exhibition 👌, wonderful and helpful staff, free entrance👍would visit again.
R. O.
This is a great place to go with adults and/or children. It's free. The staff is very helpful. It has lifts. A person with a buggy or in a wheelchair chair could see some parts, but not all, but definitely go to all the levels. It's small but very well stocked and the information is clear. It's also in a very convenient location. Right off Union Street (the main street in the city centre). Easy to go to by bus. By car, is easy to park in Union Square Shopping Centre, and walk from there.
S. l.
Excellent museum, with very helpful staff. Lots of fascinating displays and wonderful facts about Aberdeen and maritime history. Highly recommended visiting this museum.
J. T.
I was in for a surprise when I went in here, the Museum is bigger than it looks from the outside with a mix of the old section with loads of character and the modern now part which is very well done. There's sections on old boats of corse but also the oil industry and history of Aberdeen maritime. A great visit
J. Y.
Free to get in but I made a donation, very interesting @my 5 year old grandson even enjoyed it, especially the oil rig
B. M.
Beautiful, well curated museum setting out Aberdeen's rich maritime history
S. G.
Amazing place, good information on the offshore industry, commercial Diving, naval history of Aberdeen and more. Worthwhile to visit. Free entry. Works on donation basis.
I. S.
Great exhibition showing the rise of Aberdeen through fishing, boat building, the oil industry and onto renewables. Well worth the visit and you should look at spending at least half a day visiting.
L.
A fantastic museum with lots of interesting facts and exhibits. As is standard in all UK museums, it is free.
N. P.
Entry is free. The older area was very interesting.
R. M.
Very informative museum, creatively spaced out around 3 floors. All the exhibits are beautiful and detailed with everything from local fishing history to trawling, oil and ship building. Admission is free. It has a small gift shop and a small cafe below the first floor. There is disabled access throughout including a lift. It is even open on Sundays!
I. G.
Great museum . Kept me busy for a few hours . Very interesting with really friendly staff on reception. Free entry as well. What's not to like
i. q.
Great place for the family, lots to see and do. The oil rig in the middle is just amazing. Lots of history, gadgets, technology, and good informative place. Kids will enjoy it. It has a cafe with toilets. On arrival you are directed to enterance by staff. Be prepared to climb a lot of stairs as this is on multiple floors.
C. J.
Great museum showcasing Aberdeen's maritime history with things of interest for all ages, and fantastic views of Aberdeen harbour. Friendly and helpful staff.
D. T.
Excellent museum, free to enter and the exhibition is very interesting explaining the Port of Aberdeen's illustrious past as well as the city's technological innovation for the future. There is a lot to see here with a good view over the docks as well. There is also a small shop and a cafe for anyone wanting souvenirs or a cup of tea/coffee in a relaxed environment.
I. P.
A lovely museum, very invested, well arranged and gave us a great experience for almost two hours. Several floors, many themes, pictures, presentations, many accessories related to the sea theme in the area, and the oil field in particular. Includes tools and videos related to the oil rigs.
M. M.
Free to get in, there's a cafe and little gift shop selling post cards, books and toy sea creatures and such like.
Very interesting exhibits on the Oul and Gas, the North Sea, and a little ship cabin you can look inside.
Also, look out for the massive Lighthouse lens.
Lovely, well kept museum, right in the City Centre and if you go upstairs you can look out of the big windows across the Harbour and see the ferries and boats.
G. C.
A fascinating museum with plenty to learn about. Brilliant hands-on exhibitions for kids and adults. Once you're on the top floor you're treated to a great view of the ships in the dock. A great afternoon out, and it's free too!
E. A. B.
Very beautiful museum. It is very nice organised and everiting is well explained. The personal is very plasent and helpful explaining very nice eny questions you may have. The museum has a beautiful vue to the harbor so you can admire a real ship. The vizit of the museum is free. Inside you can enjoi a drink or have something delicios to eat at the Maritime cafe. The personal at the cafe was very nice.
P. H.
Very cool museum that is FREE!!! I especially liked seeing the old ships that were built in Aberdeen, the exhibits on the old and new fishing industry there, and finally on the offshore oil and gas operations as that is my industry. Make sure you watch the Piper Alpha video before going, if you have a chance. Clean washrooms. The restaurant/cafe looks nice but I did not have a chance to try it.
S. W.
It's a small museum, but absolutely packed with exhibits and interesting things. We weren't expecting it to be free and it is a tardis, definitely bigger on the inside than out. It's a really, really good museum.
S. A.
Great central museum too find! Parking was directly opposite (multistory)
Very interesting, alot of history on all things ships/sea!
B. H.
Awesome Brilliant lovely education and gives you an insight into how hard people had to work to earn a living and the community spirit
C. T.
The kids loved the activity sheets that guided us all through the museum. The oil rig & shipping technology was interesting, as were the interactive displays!
Must see for everyone, even if ships aren't your big thing.
Not so big that it is a strain to get through it.
Don't forget to get your discount ticket for the parking garage across the road.
D. B.
Highly recommend a visit, especially if your new to Aberdeen and not sure where to go. We wasn't sure what to expect, it's a really nice place and very educational. You will lose what time it is and easily spend a couple of hours in there. Its free to visit too, donations can be made but not pushed on anyone. Friendly staff on reception made us feel welcome.
Parking off street just up the road on the right at the multi-storey if you want to walk from your vehicle.
A. H.
Free free free, there was this wedgie thinking Glasgow had the monopoly on free museum's. This is a fantastic visit even if your a salty sea dog or a land loving foot soldier. Visit this gaff 👌
J. F.
Definitely worth a visit. Admission is free and there are so many interesting things on display.
D. W.
A wealth of information contained in a building with spectacular views of the harbour. Looking out from the windows elevated position it seems like a link between the present and the past as the supply ships as so in your face and real. The musiem has a host of up to date displays from the oil and fishing industries and even has a massive model of an oil rig housed in one of the stairwells. Very impressive. A short film from before the second WW tells of a trawler in troubled waters .... so of its time and vivid. The building its self with its squeaky floors and quirky rooms and doorways compliment the experience. As the experience is free what's stopping you going?
R. P.
Nice museum about the city's history as a port and its importance to the crown.
K. C.
A small museum next to the sea. With documents and models related to maritime history. A nice place to visit.
L. T.
Wonderful museum with free entrance and free tours by volunteers. Great place to visit if you want to know Aberdeen's history from fish to oil industry.
G. T.
Great place with interesting information about the city relationship with the sea. And displays on the North sea oil and gas industry. Plus a spectacular view of the harbour and its mighty tugs.
J. D.
Excellent, FREE museum covering different aspects of both Aberdeen maritime history and the oil trade. Equal parts educational and fun.
M. S.
One of the best museums I've ever visited. The story of north sea oil was fascinating I learned a lot! Free entry.
A. A.
Fantastic place with hundreds of maritime history documented in pictures, letters, artefacts, scale models and a real Samurai uniform. You can even try your hands controlling an underwater ROV. Navy memorabilia from WW1, bbc weather forecasts from the 1920s, diving suits from the 1800s, this place has it all. Aberdeen Maritime Museum is an all out audio-visual onslaught on your senses (touch, hear, see, smell), I mean that in the nicest way possible. A model of the world's deepest oil rig operarating on a Russian field gives you a sense of just how miniature we are in comparison to the depths of the oceans: oil is drilled at up to 5km below sea level. How cool is that. I recommend this place 100%.
T.
Very welcoming staff (especially Tim) and interesting and informative displays. Well worth a visit. Free entry. Some interactive displays out of order
P. B.
Absolutely fascinating. I vaguely remember the Piper Alpha disaster but the telling of this story - and life on Oil Rigs - on the 3 levels of the Museum was an eye opener.
A Must Visit place, when in Aberdeen.
T. K.
This is a very interesting museum which covers the maritime history of the city. There are many interesting exhibits and scale models of ships old and new, not to mention oil rigs! A tremendous place to visit
F.
Interesting, free and deceptively large musuem. I was there for hours and have only seen half of it. A nice welcome from a member of staff when I arrived on Sunday afternoon, no wonder it was popular. Looking forward to a return visit. Only 2 points: the drops of North sea oil would be better displayed raised up as they are difficult to sea. On the top floor there is an interactive model of a house showing how much energy each appliance used. This did light up but was not showing a difference between appliances and did not seem to be working properly. As this was one of few intereactive exhibits for children that I saw it is important that it does work. There are however trails for children: one 7+ and one for the under 7s.
A. L.
Definitely well worth the visit. Definitely learnt many new things about the maritime / energy production history of Aberdeen and the northern islands that aren't necessarily easily found on the internet.
S. E.
Very interesting museum.. worth a visit if u get some free time in Aberdeen.. it's very near to Aberdeen port & union square.. the museum gives a lot of information regarding the history of oil industry.. entry is free, there is a cafeteria inside..
M. B. H.
Really interesting free museum. It's not got amazing interactive activities but it's a very interesting place, and great to spend an hour .
s. w.
Well worth a visit, awesome views over the port. Really interesting exhibits
D. O.
The museum is quite informative and educating. You will learn alot about the Oil and Gas industry as a whole and the history of Oil and Gas in Aberdeen. Also the fishing industry in Aberdeen; how it started. I got to see pictures of the harbour years ago compare to what it looks like now. Actually, you shouldn't visit Aberdeen without going to the Aberdeen maritime museum. The museum has three levels, plan to spend minimum of 1 hour there to appreciate the place. It's got a cafe just incase feel like having a hot drink.
J. K.
Excellent museum that tells the history of Aberdeen through the archaeological findings from the earliest ages well before the romans and vikings, right up to the present age. The artwork and exhibition of artefacts and sound recordings are superb. There are a few interactive screens which didn't work so well for me. But the accurate model of a particular north sea oil rig that stretches up through the height of about four floors of the museum was awesome and a real show-stopper! There is something for all ages here. The staff are very helpful.
S. K.
Vnteresting place and very good exhibition. Really good organized in quite small building. The models of ships are really great and accurate.
O. O.
Totally enjoyed my experience at Aberdeen Maritime museum. It’s a cradle of fishing and Subsea technology with various, paintings, illustrations and structures.
K. a. B.
Small but that's a plus. Doesn't overwhelm people with only a casual interest in the topic but keeps you fascinated for an hour or two with a couple of well chosen highlights. Sadly, doesn't cover maritime biology at all, but there is enough to discover about the history and present of local shipping to make most people happy.
V. K.
Very educational; history wise and in terms of the very active offshore industry in the UK. It's also free! Just be careful with parking.
H. B.
Really enjoyed looking around and learning more of the historical facts about Aberdeen. Definitely worth a visit 👍
A. R.
Lots of interesting pieces dating back a couple 100 years ago. I am fascinated by Ships, Rigs and offshore instillation. This is a great place to visit if u have similar interest as i do.
M. H.
Great museum, can't believe it's free! Highly recommended for a day in Aberdeen
R. H.
A well put together and modern presentation of maritime and offshore exhibits. There is usually a boat sitting outside in the harbour to add to the experience!
The offshore exhibit is accurate, if you work offshore and your family wonders what its like then it would be a great place to take them even if you don't particularly want to see a survival suit again.
The staff were friendly, approachable and helpful.
Entry is free but you can donate at a box near the entrance.
If you find yourself in Aberdeen station and are tired of shopping at Union Square then it's a nice place to spend an hour or so.
There is an elevator (watch the step in and out) so it's navigable by pram and wheelchair but some there are a few steps in the main exhibit and on the older clipper exhibits so it may be a case of taking the long way around sometimes.
Bathrooms were clean and tidy.
The cafe on site is shut, probably due to COVID but you can bring food there to eat.
There isn't enough there to spend a whole day on but, due to its location, you can spend an hour or two there before moving on.
If you don't like heights be aware that the central part of the museum is dominated by a scale model of an oil platform that extends several storeys. It is surrounded by glass barriers and is obviously safe but maybe work your way from bottom to top.
G. S.
Great history of Aberdeen carefully laid out has been updated and improved since I last visited
D.
Interesting place to visit. Cafe closed today. Not too busy.
S. J. S.
Great place, helpful staff and the information given was so interesting. Rhank you so much, we had a lovely visit.
M. H.
We all enjoyed it. Lots about the fishing when it was 'just' a port.
Lots about the oil and gas industry and an oil rig installation. Multi media exhibits as well. Lovely building and views over to the ships in the harbour. Spotlessly clean. Friendly staff. Thank you.
Free to enter, but donations always welcome.
a. h.
Really interesting. They are closing for refurbishment so check before you travel!
m. p.
No cafe which is meant to be on the ground floor but there is lots of exhibitions I think the building is 4 floors with different exhibitions from oil rigs to boats then you have provost lodge house which is part of the museum to it was okay but the best part about it is was all free my only gripe there was no shop which you could bye souvenirs and the like
A. B.
Fantastic place for young and old. So much history to find our about the city. Free entry but they do accept donations
m. A.
Nice please to step by and take a look.
Describing Aberdeen and the sea. Also it covers oil and gas in offshore in the North Sea
Good place
R. A.
Love visiting every time i go to Aberdeen. As a lover of art and appreciate anything that has marine involvement this place is a must and guess what its FREE to.
They also have a cafe which is very often packed.
I would recommend visiting for those who haven't gone. Oh yeah, its very pleasing to art lovers too.
S. &. H. G. A. T. (. A.
Great place to spend a few hours walking around and reading up on the local Maritime history. Even has a cafe on the ground floor.
A. M.
Went here with my great niece. It's a fantastic day out and it's free. Very interesting.
A. S.
Very interesting and informative museum, and all free of charge. But absolutely worth giving some money at the end.
R. C.
For current and future maritime enthusiasts, it's a nice visit to learn about Aberdeen's Merchant Navy history.
J. G.
Well worth a visit. Good displays of local maritime history including ship building, fishing and oil exploration and production, and it's all free! Some fine paintings and a good if small selection of archaeological artifacts linking Aberdeen to the wider world.
School holidays, a fair number of children thoroughly engaged with their activity sheets
D. J.
Very well set out displays clean and tidy easy to read and understand exhibits great place x
W. M.
Brilliant museum with free entry, find out all about Aberdeen and North East's maritime history.
C. N.
Not huge, but very interesting. About 3-4 floors of maritime history in the area, including things like ROVs and Shipbuilding, as well as trade and oil refinery work. Free always helps. Also attached to the Provosts house, which has more naval stuff but is also interesting to look through in it's own right. Clean facilities, and a good view of the harbour from the top floor.
M. S.
This is a gem. An excellent way to learn a lot about Aberdeen and its history, particularly of the waterfront and harbour. And...it is free! If you need to park a car in the parking garage across the street, ask for a discount voucher at the museum reception desk.
M. S.
very interesting museum, nice view to the port. a bit disappointing, some of the interactive devices are out of order
I. M.
The maritime history of Aberdeen, its people and some famous Aberdonians well captured. And entrance is free!
P. M.
A nicely laid out free museum. Plenty to see and enjoy. Model boats and bits of boats. Lots of boat stuff really. Views out to the harbour mean you can see real boats. In a good location.
D. H.
Superb testimony to the Aberdeen maritime and oil industry with several floors to explore. Free entry and good cafe so a must-see if visiting the city.
J. A.
10/10 We visited during a quiet period which probably enhanced our enjoyment of it. Very interesting with good displays and views over the harbour too. A broad history of maritime Aberdeen.
P. M.
Great museum. Very interesting and learnt lots about oil rigs
G. K.
Content is narrow and little. Not a bad choice of visit. It is small and you need not spend much time.
F. M.
I would happliy recommend this museum to anyone interested in the background and history of aberdeen, its fishing and offshore oil exploration industries. A truly fantastic experience.
S. W.
Free museum with Aberdeen's maritime history and a great view of the port.
T. M.
Excellent . Especially free. Very interesting. Staff very helpful friendly and very knowledgeable.
C. T.
Nice museum showing the local history of the maritime and oil extraction industries.
P. K.
The maritime history of aberdeen
J. S.
Was such an interesting place to visit. Loved Lear king about the development of the Harbour and the life on the rigs. The wee cafe was lovely, albeit slow to serve I found. But that could easily have been technology causing that.
m. m.
Great invite into the marine working world over the ages a good place to visit
s. w.
2nd visit for us. It is tucked away down a side road but contained wonderful displays, especially the enormous model of an oil platform that spans many floors.
Although we live near to where oil rigs with their extendable legs are brought into our local harbour for maintenance etc, it's not until you see the model of an "oil platform" as opposed to a "oil rig" do you realise just how big they must be stuck out in the North sea.
The museum building itself has large windows on all levels that look out over the harbour. Here you can observe the oil supply vessels and ferries, this feature ties in well with the assorted presentations about the harbour development, it's boat yards, ferries, oil production related features etc.
A place we felt should not be missed if visiting Aberdeen......... And it's free !
F. B.
It's an old spooky castle. Did play a roll on the Jacobite troubles. Lots of gunholes. We were there with Westraak, a guide from Westray. Very good guide. Very good lunch too.
S. S.
A free museum with a lot of things to see! If you don't know what to do in Aberdeen, it could be a nice thing to do!
G. v. K.
Very interesting museum on the development of Aberdeen as an important harbor city.
J. A.
We managed to spend quite some time in this free museum. Spread over 4 or more floors it was well laid out and interesting. The kids loved playing with the things they could touch, I understand there would have been more to touch had it not been for covid.
C. H.
We liked this, found it interesting and educational. Great view of the harbour. One tiny criticism: one of our party is dyslexic and he found the font on the exhibit explanations more difficult to read than in other museums we visited.
L. K.
A must place if you are visiting Aberdeen!!! So informative and interesting about local history!!!
D. W.
Excellent free museum. Well laid out and with knowledge staff. Good view of Aberdeen harbour and ferry to Orkney and Shetland from the top floor.
b. s.
In Aberdeen for the day. So popped in to have a look around. Very interesting exhibits
B. C.
Very interesting.
J. M.
Personally I didn't enjoy it however this was because I had assumed it would have many more exhibits relating to the north east of Scotlands fishing industry and culture. Just not what I was looking for. It has several worthwhile exhibits relating to the oil/energy sector. If you are interested in those then it would be worthwhile.
B. S.
Good displays on several floors. Worth a 2- 3 hour visit. Interactive for children. Good views of the ferry terminal.
P. K.
Nice museum depicting history of Aberdeen and Oil & Gas....
R. S.
Cannot believe that we spent 3.5 hours here and time just flew!
Wonderful exhibits and so interesting. Just loved learning about the history of Aberdeen!
l. l.
Very informative museum. Staff was very friendly.
J. L.
This is a really good and free museum. A lot of information about maritime in the local area. Including the oil industry. It is based over 3 floors. We were in there for about 2 hours ish.
A. G.
This museum is a great place to visit, it has a great variety of thing's to see about Aberdeen maritime history. The staff is friendly and it is a pleasure to visit it. I highly recommend this museum, it is a must, when you visit Aberdeen.
R. B.
Rated best attraction in town, and you can see why!
D. M.
Excellent experience, great to see how everything started with the harbour and up to the oil & gas influence.
J.
Interesting facts about maritime history. They do have quite a lot of items regarding oil exploration at sea too!
M. D.
Was boat making today 4th July 2022.
Made a boat out of crafts and put it in water to see that it floated or sank and It floated 👍👍
j. j.
A fun and interesting way to spend a few hours.with some hands on exhibits.
G. A.
Free entry worth a visit very good.

Excellent museum spent a few hours there, well worth a visit if you are interested in maritime history.
T. L.
Wonderful place to discover all history of Aberdeen Port! Very polite and positive stuff! It is one of places you must visit in Aberdeen!
A. T.
Very interesting place and worth while place to go glad the council haven't butchered it like art gallery and provost skene house
A. W.
A lot to see in such a small place. Love the design looking like you're climbing an oil base station
R. B.
A nice museum in the heart of Aberdeen.... wonderful stuff on display
M. S.
Nice museum, a few interactive pieces and they have a Newtsuit on display; coolest "toy" ever! And right next to it you can test your skills at controlling a miniature ROV.
M. O.
Not really my thing but I can appreciate people having interest.
M. P. L.
Free admission to this fascinating museum in three connected buildings: an old stone house, an old church and a modern linking building!
R. A.
Great place loads of interaction and information relating to Aberdeens maritime past and present.
Fantastic view from the top level. Car parking nearby.

Me and my family gain a bit knowledge on the oil rig and platform from here
A. B.
We have been waiting for this to reopen as it was listed as one of the top things to do in Aberdeen. I took my 4 year old. It was ok, but not suitable really for children. Most of the interactive things were not functioning (I guess because of covid) the ROV was working tho which was the best thing there for kids. I wish it had more interactive exhibits not only for kids but for me too. It did get tedious pretty quickly
J. I.
The museum is very good. And the fact my Grandfather has an exhibit in there is even better. And the history right up to now is great too.
p. n.
Amazing exhibits with well written information sheets. Tells the history of the areas industry with an emphasis on the modern gas workings. Very informative, I spent 3 hours in there, no problem. Cafe was good and appreciated at the end of my visit. I would suggest getting the lift to the top floor and work you way down. Cafe is at the bottom.

Fabulous place, great quiz for kids, lots of information

Quite nice and beautiful, lots of old and archaeological things .
Amazing place for photography.
M. E.
A great way to spend an hour or two. Very interesting museum detailing the maritime history of the city as well as the north sea oil fields. I recieved a very warm welcome on arrival and found that visiting on a Monday morning it was nice and quiet.
K. O.
Excellent museum for both adults and kids. There is a wide choice of exhibitions related to sea exploration and mining. I recommend it to every Aberdeen visitor. Plan to spend 2-3 hours there. Kids especially enjoyed the fact that you can touch and try most of the things. Staff is very friendly and helpful.
K. S.
Nice wee museum. It's free, most interesting section for me was top floor with the oil rig life.
L. M.
Considering that it is free of charge you should absolutely pay this place a visit. It is a great museum. It offers information about Aberdeen harbour, the North Sea and oil and gas platforms (place is supported by the oil industry, which is visible but also leads so some interesting pieces to see). Nice view over the harbour. Good coffee in the Café. Very nice staff.
A. S.
An amazing museum with many things to read and interact with. The building itself is beautiful and the inside is very spacious and well designed. The small cafe inside offered great food (which we greatly enjoyed!). Packed with information and fun for the whole family; would recommend.
g. c.
Interesting small museum that showcases the Aberdeenian maritime history with fascinating exhibits. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
B. O.
Nice place. Very good to learn about the transition of Aberdeen from a rural fishing community to a ship building hub and then to being the hub of oil and gas production in the UK.
Nice video documentaries are available on several subjects.
I really like the fact that they have tried to keep the piper alpha tragedy alive here
E. A.
Nice museum, quite interactive and interesting. Entry is free, so definitely worth a visit.
A. C.
Really interesting, fascinating artefacts and a good way to learn about the rich history of Aberdeen. Would recommend a look 👌
N.
I hate museums generally but this one was fascinating. So much to see and learn. Interesting facts. Thru the ages development of the harbour and sea adventures. Also scaled down oil rig in the centre circle filling floor to ceiling over 4 floors. Amazing. Some interactions for the kids who although not with me seemed to be having fun. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Well worth a visit. And its FREE!!
C. B.
Well worth a visit, and free.
J. P. C.
Excellent museum and staff very informative
B. B.
Great place to visit. Lots of good exhibits and a few interactive displays. Nice cafe at the bottom which doesn't break the bank. They also do free guided tours so you can learn more about the history of the area. My 6 year old granddaughter didn't want to leave.
K. W.
Highly influenced by the oil industry. One video even talked about how they cared about the environment and recycled, which is hilarious when you think about oil's impact on climate change. Museum was good, but would do better focusing on new technologies. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!
S. P.
It is a great place to see maritime history and modern maritime technology in one place. From centuries old boats to modern oil rig, there are lots of interesting things to see. I took my mom and was able to show model offshore oil rig and film which explained how oil is extracted, she was really impressed.
M. Y. W.
No parking. There is a multi-story carpark opposite. Take a walk if have time.
k. s.
Very informative and full of artefacts relating to the maritime history of Aberdeen, the section on North Sea oil is excellent and there was a very exceptional exhibition of photographic portraits when I visited. The museum is small and compact a good size for a short visit or indeed a much longer one if you are interested!
P. W.
Great place to take children and its free
S. B.
Interesting museum. Good mix between history and petrol conquest.
R.
A great museum that sits right in the heart of Aberdeen! I had driven by it several times but never went in. I was surprised to find that it was a free museum and contained a lot of information about the city that I had never heard before. It's a great place to stop in for anyone that wants to learn more about the city!
J. S.
Veeeery interesting history about ships and oil and gas. Free at 2:00 p.m.
M. A.
Very interesting place, well set up with a good history of the maritime industry in Aberdeen, especially fishing and oil. Lots to see and do with a great view over the modern harbour. Free admission, there is a self service cafe and a small shop.
m. m.
Waited 3 years fir this and not disappointed well worth a visit no cafe thought
F. M.
While staying with a friend nearby I visited here on a day in Aberdeen - this place has so much packed in here! Really enjoyable both for kids and adults, lots to see and do! Totally free admission as well, and there's a cafe serving locally caught fish with chips - the smell was very tempting as we went round! 😄
D. C.
Great place to visit whatever your age
J. B.
Having lived in the City for a number of years now. I always pass in by the Maritime Museum form time to time as they are a great bunch of people who work there for a start very helpful and friendly people. There is always something different on exhibit in the Maritime Museum old ship building oil and Gas or Fishing Aberdeen's back bone.
Take Time out and Pop in by you will not be dis-appointed I can assure.
Keep up the Good work all who work in this fine establishment.
Warm Regards
James & Frances
A.
A small museum, but worth the visit. An interesting look at the oil & gas industry.
C. G.
This was a fantastic place to visit with our family and it was free to enter! Our sons loved the quiz that they could complete whilst looking at the exhibitions and there were lots of interactive items to keep them busy whilst learning at the same time. The café was great too! We would definitely recommend.
N. R.
Plenty to see about how the harbour of Aberdeen shaped the city and how Brittish boats and ships evolved. Also, it's an entertaining site to visit with kids - interactive activities on site. There are also sections devoted to off shore drilling for oil and gas.
S. L.
Amazing museum, absolutely rammed packed full of interesting things for kids and adults to enjoy! I have 5yo and 1yo, both loved it, and us grownups were very happy with the quality and variety of the displays. The cafe is quite nice too! Thoroughly recommend for a family day out
J.
Great place for all the family. Lots about how Aberdeen has changed from herring port to Oil and gas town.
Great staff.
Don't forget to claim your price reduction ticket if parked in NCP car park.
J. H.
Fantastic museum, worth around 1.5 to 2.5 hours of anyone's time if they are even remotely interested in the east coasts rich maritime heritage. Good exhibits, well enough explained and clean. I don't think I've seen a public museum or exhibition space so clean as here (anywhere in Europe) , whoever is in charge of this kudos, it's really pleasing to be there. Staff were knowledgeable and friendly and the galleries seem to change occasionally so worth popping your head in the door every now and then even if you've been before.
Did I mention it's free!? It is!
M. F.
Nice museum, with lots of information about the different important industries in Aberdeen (mostly oil and fish). Especially the part about offshore platforms is interesting and gives you a good grasp of the industry. Also the offshore platform model is cool. It's free and provides good fun and lots of info for 1-2 hours, perfect for a rainy day
S. L.
Fantastic selection of artefacts and exhibits. Free entry as well. Knowledgeable staff and not too busy. The cafe has a limited number of options and isn't particularly cheap but I guess that's where the museum's main source of revenue comes from.
Very much an oil theme throughout but nevertheless. No parking.
S. W.
Very interesting and well layed out museum. A variety of different exhibitions including Whaling, deep sea oil rigs and Punch and Judy. There is a nice cafe too. The staff are friendly and helpful and it's free admission.
R. Z.
Amazing Museum - and it's FREE!!!
F. M.
Excellent place to learn about Aberdeen history in maritime industry. Suitable for both kids and adults. There are many exhibition provided. We spent more than 3 hours to complete the whole tours. Wish to go again.
m. d.
Really interesting and free entry
D. A. A.
The entry fee is free. It's really interesting and very informative. Also it is suitable for children. You can find there old paintings, old models of ships and many other interesting things. And it's pretty close to the city center.
T. K. B.
Very good. Multiple floors full of historical objects, paintings and models including a 3 level tall model of an oil rig. Some interactive activities and a cafe. Probably the best museum in abdn.
A. G.
Really good information on maritime ships and history
L. T.
Nice to visit for kids and no entry fee
S. M.
We and the kids had a good time! The staff were lovely and it didn't cost us anything
L. U.
Great trip out, the 3 of us enjoyed it. I understand why the cafe is not open at present but it was shame. Really interesting day out.
J. M.
I've been there a number of times with visiting family members and friends. Good place for one to learn about oil and gas industry. Very informative and fun. Downstairs is a cafeteria (haven't visited myself) for someone who needs some energy to get going.
J. D.
Brief history of ship building in Scotland. Location slightly awkward to get a car too...but is a parade across the road.
M. S.
My grandchildren loved it it's a great place to take kids very educational and free
J. C.
This place is a great way to learn about maritime history and how it influenced the area. The oil and gas exhibits and info on piper alpha was really poignant. Of course being a donation museum certainly adds to the appeal. Would recommend a visit if your in the area.
M. D.
Fabulous modern museum building. We spent almost 3 hours looking at a huge variety of exhibits going back to models of old sailing ships and tea cutters right up to vessels used in the oil industry. Looks of pictutes andcwell presented information with some interactive exhibits. It's free too with very friendly staff. Lovely cafe too. Would recommend a visit.
N. T.
A very nice museum with free entry. It will tell you history of Aberdeen's harbour and you will definitely learn some more about oil and gas industry. Kids will also find this place interesting since there are some things you can play with such as miniature ROV.
J. D.
Lots to see and free admission too. The kids were given a quiz each which kept them busy - one for older children and a simpler one for youngsters - and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The model ships are particularly impressive.
G.
Great place with great employees, a lot of interesting facts about aberdeens maretime history
H. A.
Free museum that takes their visitors on a journey of Aberdeen seafarers through the centuries from fishery and trade up to and with a fair amount of focus on the post-oil discovery period. This includes the jobs and logistics with only minor focus on the environmental impacts.
Nonetheless, it's interesting and well laid out. Of particular interest is that one part of the exhibit in what used to be an old church that adds to the overall flair.
P. M.
An excellent collection of the Maritime History of the North East of Scotland with the growth of Aberdeen and its Harbor explained in great detail.
Very informative and interesting for kids with all display of Rigs and other facilities offshore to see n experience.
It is a must see experience for any Aberdeen visitor.
R. P.
Located in a quaint granite structure which is just at a stone's throw distance from the Union Square and Aberdeen Station.
It is a must see.
The inside turns up to be surprisingly spacious . The unraveling of Aberdeen's maritime history from its fishing past to the fantastic representation of the workings of its high tech ofshore oil facilities can see a good couple of viewing hours pass by without a notice!
Entry to this museum is free . Frankly I wouldn't be interested if it wasn't , but I'd now say that it's worth a see even if it was!
E. M.
A fantastic museum for those interested in fishing, harbour, or the oil industry. The museum has multiple item packed floors. Many of the museums attractions are also interactive and are great for keeping the kids entertained and learning exactly how things work. The cafe stairs provides a perfect place to relax and has very friendly staff. You can even get sandwiches or hot meals.
I. M.
Free entrance with a decent coffee shop downstairs. The fishing section has taken the sad history of whaling and displayed it in a factual and inoffensive way. The oil industry is very well presented with an undersea ROV that you can pilot. There are levels to explore so time will be needed
P. K.
A fascinating place to visit - displays on all aspects of Aberdeen's maritime past and present, and full of interesting bits of information - like the Inuit who arrived in Scotland in a kayak, or the fact that the original design for the tea clippers was largely developed in Aberdeen. Also much information about the oil industry. The building itself is a harmonious coming together of an old chapel, a Provost's house, and a modern building tying the two together.
M. S.
Superb collection of maritime memorabilia covering the history of Aberdeen and the North Sea. Some great interactive exhibits and worth it alone to see the scale model of the oil rig.
There is a decent cafe on the lower level offering hot food and drinks, soup was superb on a cold aberdeen day.
Friendly and informed staff were superb.
J. C.
Lots of exhibits to see here. Plenty of interactive things to keep kids and adults alike amused. Lots of information you can easily spend 2-4 hours here depending on your level of interest in reading up etc. Well laid out with lots of personal stories to bring the history to life.
A. B.
Absolutely fantastic place to go. It's also free :) so much info and it's all lay out in a way where it's interesting and engaging. They seem to have activities and quizzes for children for learning etc. Can't wait to take my dad and my daughter will love it too.
S. L.
Great for anyone with an interest in maritime history, especially of the North East of Scotland, very insight & staff member was polite & helpful.

A very exciting place. Have seen many ancient times maritime procedures and operations and how they have evolved through time. Aberdeen as a major hub in oil and gas industry has a very historic sites, Maritime museum a remarkable one.

C. H.
Aberdeen Maritime Museum takes you on a journey through time with rich and detailed happenings along the way. Has brilliant views on every level overseeing the Dockyards. The Museum also has a good section explaining the Oil and Industry trade, Many people have family members and friends on board platforms so to get an in depth understanding on how Day-to-Day life is is very helpful. Staff are friendly.
J. R.
Beautiful building and well planned exhibitions covering Aberdeen's historical importance in oil and fishing industries. Stunning view from the top floor. Staff are very nice, extremely helpful. Had a little cry at the Piper Alpha exhibition but I'm not ashamed of that tbh. There's quite a lot to look at , as an adult in no rush, I spent around 3 hours looking around. It might be less time for busier adults, probably about the same with little people. There is a lift so I think it would be ok for anyone with mobility issues. No car park but reduced tickets for the ncp nearby are advertised to purchase from the museum. Definitely worth a visit x
R. C.
Lovely museum - laid out well, very interactive and a great source of information for anything maritime related! It's easy to get there (just off Union Street) and admission is free.
A. M. M.
Great collection. Friendly staff
S. A. s.
Good to visit. Very informative 👏
L. B.
Interesting museum showing a lot of the history of Aberdeen. The port of Aberdeen has been an important part of its growth and industrial influence in the UK.
Paintings of famous ships and also of more abstract motives.
For kids there are also interactive exhibits, which are also fascinating for adults.
Definitely worth to see in Aberdeen.
D. M.
Fantastic museum, my faverioute exibition is the Scottish Samurai and the large scale of the oil platform! Its free too!
B. S.
Fantastic museum! Great information about the boat building and maritime history of Scotland, especially Aberdeen. My husband loves all things boat-related and really enjoyed the museum.
A. S.
The staff were helpful and very informative. Whilst the Museum is free entry, we did as we always do, leave a generous donation as its the right thing to do. The bonus was a toy display on show for a short period of time which was trip down memory lane for me. A Grandstand games console was amongst the display which i had in the 80's...
I. A.
Very interesting museum. Loved the area about North Sea Drilling, diving suits etc. The literature about the Alpha Rig fire was very informative. .. all in all a great place to visit. . and it's free..... Also a smashing little cafe..
C. V.
A good little museum I've grown up around with interesting historical information, paintings and exhibits of the fishing and oil industry of Aberdeen and North East of Scotland. Good café with friendly staff and a nice little souvenir shop. 10 out of 10.
I. I.
Nice location. Good displays. Great for family day out and learning about the maritime history of Aberdeen. There's paid public parking nearby.
S. H.
Great place to visit and well worth a visit.
C. E.
Good local museum charting the development of Aberdeen harbour and town. Nice artefacts well presented, impressive scale model of an oil production platform. Good view over the harbour from upper floors.
A. M.
As Aberdeen ART GALLERY, is STILL NOT OPEN AFTER 2 YEARS REFURBISHMENT , it's about the only place to go ....
D. S.
This was an absolute find! It's packed full of fascinating artefacts for all types of maritime interest. Historical pieces and information range from the 17th Century right through to the terrible Piper Alpha disaster. Current maritime and fishing practices are explained with some really good hands-on activities for all ages. Spread across three buildings and about four/five levels the windows to the front give great views across the working harbour. There is an interesting section on the development of Aberdeen too. I really would recommend it, and shall definitely visit again when next in the Granite City.
C. A.
I am living here for that long and I think this is most interesting place to show to your guests who is visiting Aberdeen for first time.
I was there plenty times and it's okay. I like also little gift shop but it's not belongs to cheap things.
You can find cheaper gift shop on George Street ;)
M. S.
This museum is free. There's three levels of things to look at all to do with sea life and offshore drilling etc. The gift shop and cafe are expensive so avoid those. The security guards that patrol the museum are very unfriendly, be prepared to queue to interact with some interactive rov's and kinetic energy machines as the people on it take advantage and you literally have to ask for your turn.
V. L.
Very instructive museum in a 17th century building, in the city centre of Aberdeen. Very friendly for children as well. There's a shop and a café. The museum is displayed on three floors, there's an elevator. Every information is accurately written and explained.
Y.
Really interesting collection in a well laid out space, spanning two separate buildings - one modern, one very old - although you move between them without noticing until you become aware of the creaky staircases that signal the change in atmosphere.
Everything is covered, from the historical herring fishing and whaling industries right up to the modern day oil and sustainable energy industries of the North Sea.
Worthy of particular note is the area commemorating the Piper Alpha disaster, which manages to strike a balance between laying out the cold facts surrounding the event, and the horrific stories connected to it, and conveying what little positives arose in the aftermath.
With one exception the staff were unfailingly friendly and helpful - especially when the 'one exception' was brought to the attention of the duty supervisor, who was most apologetic and dealt with the situation in a subtle and efficient manner..
M. C.
Brillant looks quite small from the outside lots to see and well laid out
B. R.
Fabulous, wonderfully informative
J. W.
Always a great place to visit. Well laid out, interesting, & the regular special events an asset. Recently attended Malice in Medievil Aberdeen talk & really enjoyed it. Would recommend the Museum to others.
L. W.
Very interesting...lots of steps
E. P.
This is a really interesting place, the section on deep sea and oil platforms etc was fascinating, the history of Aberdeen harbour and the ship building was also good. And it's free, recommend!

M. S.
Great interactive displays for children. Plenty of information on the history and current role of shipping in Aberdeen region. Great view of the harbour from the top floor.
D. M.
My friend took me when I was in Aberdeen to show me the oil rig model and where he worked on his one. Said the sleeping quarter's mock up is spot on. Many other interesting displays show casing the local maritime history and even something found in a hedge in New Zealand!
M. C.
A great educational experience fo the whole family, this museum focuses on the maritime history of Aberdeen. There are a variety of multisensory experiences including piloting a drone through water. Staff are friendly and great at delivering experiences.
I. M.
Very interesting.
No charge but donations welcome.
Good view over Aberdeen Harbour.
A. D.
3 levels of exhibitions. Takes about 1.5 hours to tour. Focus on oil rigs & ship building history of Aberdeen. If you like ships, this is the place
S.
It's a great museum, and it provides a very detailed exhibition of all the way back to the time when Aberdeen was a small town that thrived on herring fishing to the modern times where oil rigs dominate the sea.
The museum is a compound of what used to be two separate buildings, a church, a Victorian house, and a modern glass-pane section linking the two buildings.
In the center of the modern section is an awesome ten-meter tall model of an oil rig with spectacular details built into it, which in fact the museum informed me is 33 times smaller than the actual version. Another display item which I found cool was an actual ROV (something like a unmanned submarine that works around the oil rigs) that was displayed inside a water tank, and what was so amazing was that the people could remote control it.
There were other just as marvelous exhibitions, so I would definitely recommend for you to just pay a visit to the museum, even for just a bit.
J. J.
It was unexpectedly dense with historical and scientific information.
This is a fantastic stop while visiting Aberdeen.
It really delves into what made Aberdeen.
Give it a whole day though, there is a lot more here than is expected.
L. M.
Loved it!! will definetly be going back... my family work in oil so the seeing the rig and them showing you where on it they work is great. The whole place is so interesting and the gift shop was really nice prices weren't to bad either which is unusual.
c. m.
Happy to see the ship models there
P. M. -. D. K.
Great displays, well laid out, good atmosphere, wealth of information exploring Maritime history and Aberdeens personal contribution. Only 5 minutes walk from Union Square. Perfectly situated.

S. M.
We were having out annual memorial for former Seamen ⚓⛵🛶🚤⚓⛵🛶🚤⚓⛵🛶🚤⚓

Very creaky flooring in the old part of the museum. They need to advertise when the temporary exhibits change over. Still worth a look in every so often. What else is there to do in Aberdeen after all ?
D. C.
Well set out and very informative narratives. Interesting video presentations. Fascinating local history. Easy to immerse yourself for a few hours. Free entry and a wee cafe too 👍
T. K.
Definitely worth a visit , great exhibit and friendly staff
Q.
Great place to take the kids for historical education of Aberdeen ships and oil rigs. A nice cafe as well to get
a quick bite to eat, or rest your feet with a coffee
W. T.
A fantastic well laid out museum covering a historic journey of a way of life in the north sea covering fishing, boat building, oil etc. How it has affected the many communities up the eastern side of Scotland. To allow us many to realise the work envolved so we can eat fish in our heated houses. A realisation of what we take for granted.
There is a lovely cafe serving home made scones etc to enjoy over a cup of coffee, tea or juice.
Just now their is puppet workshops for the young ones check out their websites.
A. G.
Great look into port and harbor history friendly staff it's also free admission
J. F.

Well organised, maintained and presented. Staff very helpful. Exhibits excellent, esp. the diving section, the accommodation on a rig model, and the Marchison model. What's missing is more re the rigs, their function, what the workers do etc.
