Reviews of Aberystwyth Castle Grounds
L. O.
Looks nice the rest of the castle. It is free, and you have an fantastic view from there. There is parking in front “ inside the church” nice to walk around.
A. Y.
Aberystwyth Castle grounds are free to access and is located right on the sea front, it’s an impressive castle ruins and well worth a visit while strolling the sea front.
We spent around 30 min pottering around before moving into the town centre. You can take dogs with you and is an ideal spot for a picnic.
M. O.
We stopped along the marine drive in Aberystwyth and took the dogs for a walk on the beach.
Parking was limited but available. The public toilets are conveniently placed next to the castle ruins and a bit back from the road. You need 20p to get in and they are well kept and clean.
Amazing stone work on the castle ruins and the war memorial is a must see.
R. L.
What an absolute amazing castle ruins, I spent a good hour exploring the ruins, taking photos and videos, plus had a lovely walk along the promenade right down to the harbour watching the waves crash into the rocks was awesome, well worth a visit if you’re in Aberystwyth 😊😊 hope you enjoy the photos guys
M. K.
🏰 While closely watched and maintained by the National Heritage "The Castle" is an iconic meeting place for Aberystwyth University students.
🧑🎓 I was lucky to live in Aberystwyth during my under and postgraduate studies and this historical landmark always offered solitude and a go-to place to show whoever was visiting.
🚶 The Castle Grounds overlook the seafront parade which span all the way down to the feet of another local landmark - Constitution Hill. This makes for am amazing walk.
l. s.
Cool castle grounds, free to access and easy to walk around. Wheelchair friendly great location on the sea front so has some beautiful scenery surrounding the grounds. Doesn’t seem to get busy so don’t have to worry about crowds there are also toilet facilities close to the grounds
V. V.
There no need of pre booking or buying tickets on arrival.
Never thought it will be free to enter
Very scenic site and larger are to cover.
Parkings available near by. But if you travel by train it’s literally under 1ins walk from station.
You won’t regret visiting here.
Hopefully wales 🏴 weather shows mercy.
G. H.
Wonderful Aberystwth castle would have been something to see in its day, there are seat's or you can just sit down anywhere around the grounds.
There are Toilets inside the grounds. it's free to enter the grounds so you can take in the view's fab.
D. A.
Like walking around this ruin with the memorial statue on the west side. Very close to the town centre with wide footpaths for everyone including prams and wheelchairs. Lovely area with great views of the old college building and bay
P. L.
Castle ruins with a great view of the sea. Unusual for such an extensive landmark to have free entry. Free parking on the adjacent promenade also. A great way to start your visit to Aberystwyth.
I. S.
It was built in response to the First Welsh War in the late 13th century.
It was the last castle built at Aberystwyth and once ranked among the greatest in Wales!
Today Aberystwyth Castle is a Grade I listed Edwardian fortress and not much left of it.
Seems popular for kids to climb on the walls and play hide and seek there:)
Some benches scattered around on the site to sit and enjoy the sparkling sun in the sea or have your picnic.
Parking literally where you can find. We parked right below the castle on the road and walked up the stairs.
Ruins are free to enter and open 24 hours.
M. B.
Free parking on the sea front just below the castle. Several access points. Children's playground just beside the castle. Lots of benches around to enjoy the views or have a picnic
C. m.
Nice area for the kids to explore. Has a great play park but gets busy in the holidays.
D. C.
Another must visit attraction while in Aberystwyth. Feel humbled and epic on your crusade across wooden bridges and through the decrepit brick entranceways.
M. C.
The castle is great for climbing, amazing views of the sea and nearby landscape recommend for amateur photographers.
M. C.
Love wandering around the castle grounds. Well kept ruins, good pathways and nice views out to sea and of the old College and church. One of the bridges is being repaired at the moment but no real inconvenience.
P. M.
Nice to explore with kids with a plat park on its side. A free place to wonder round for half an hour. Great views of the coast also.
K. S.
Lovely place, great ruins and stone circle with great views. You can explore and have lots of fun with the kids.
H. R.
A serene, ruined castle last refurbished in the 1200s. The fortified hilltop data back to the iron age. Not sure if any of the stonework is from then. We stumbled across it whilst visiting the seaside and it was a pleasant surprise.
a. k.
It's a nice little bit of exploring and it's got toilets and a park area for kids to play and plenty of benches and over looks the beach has well very nice place
A. W.
This castle must have looked stunning in the days of its glory...! But still, happy to explore its nooks and crannies, and the views from the grounds over the harbour. The standing stones are an interesting addition to the site, however brought there only for the national Eisteddfod of 1915; each one represents a distinct Welsh county.
K. M.
Nice place for a visit, castle grounds nice for a picnic, or spend a bit of time looking round .
S. H.
Lovely to revisit. Lovely M & S and home bargains now in the town. Brilliant to revisit and brekky in Wetherspoons 👍
A. N.
Beautiful site and after reading about the history of the castle by means of the QR code scanners that are scattered about, you really feel it. I can't fault the place. Wonderful grounds that are immaculately kept. Highly worth a visit if you are in the area. Free admission helps and the location only adds to it's charm.
L. H.
Free and plenty of parking. Plenty of seagulls too who really mean business. They have no problem robbing you for your chips.
The castle remains are great to see. You can see the big the castle would have been by walking around and through the remaining walls and sections.
H. L.
I love the castle ruin. I interacted with their qr codes on the towers - nice way to learn history. Wish there were more of them, in different places with new information.
I. H.
It’s a shame this Castle is now in ruins it must have been a magnificent strong hold in years gone by...As you walk around you can imagine what it must have been like in the times of our troubled land, when Castles were built to protect yourself from attackers...The walls are ever so thick it makes you wonder how they broke through them to reduce it to rubble...It is still a lovely place to look around with great views over the coastline....👍
M. O.
Fantastic place to visit and explore.
Ruins are available and welcome to sit and contemplate its origins.
The town has beaches on both side of the castle that can be used for water loving people.
L.
Lovely walk round the ruins of the castle, covers a large area and is free entry with parking and toilets 🚻 close by.
T. D.
Lovely ruins to explore with the kids. Amazing views and there is a fantastic park next to it. We parked in the church car park and walked the sea front to the cliff top tailway and back as a fantastic day out
L. S.
Always a favourite place to visit. A broken bridge fenced off when we went and a bit of graffiti but still as charming as ever. The play park adjacent to the castle is fabulous for little ones.
M. R.
Small ruins on the seafront and free to walk around with a stone circle in the center of the ruins
N.
Absolutely gorgeous site with fantastic views. It's generally clean and has toilets nearby. The vibes here are always good! This is also a place I visit when I go to Aberystwyth.
M. H.
Not much left but an incredible spot to walk around free to visit
N. W.
Visited back in 2004 and found few old school pictures. A walk into the castle ruins is a bit disquieting, especially when you know that a massive monument once stood on the spot. Pieces of masonry seem strewn haphazardly around the grounds. However, several significant pieces of the puzzle have survived, and hint at the wonders that originally dominated the site.
When completed, diamond-shaped Aberystwyth Castle contained two twin-towered gatehouses, a barbican, four gateways, and several round towers placed along the curtain walls. Sadly, what has survived are parts of the outer ward's curtain and angle-towers and fragments of the inner ward's east and northwest gateways and angle- towers. The most notable relic is a tall tower in the inner ward.
I would recommend to visit if you are visiting the city.
S.
Visited these ruins and enjoyed the views from this raised part of the town.
C. G.
Fantastic little adventure extremely clean
S. W.
Plenty of room to get round on my wheelchair, although some parts is a little bit of a struggle to get to but that’s understandable and can’t be helped and… Beautiful views, great place for a family picnic
S. S.
Large ruin lots of nooks n crannies great viewpoint
H. D.
It has a beautiful scenery from here, it is worth visiting and taking pictures. However not many things from the castle remain.
L. V.
This place has a stunning view to the Cardigan bay. It is easy to access, with free entrance. From the Castle Grounds, you can walk around the coastal trail to explore the beautiful view of mountains and ocean in Aberystwyth. Strongly recomended.
R. S. B.
A beautiful part of a lovely town. Very well kept ruins 🤔
My only criticism is the lack of info regarding the parts of the castle still standing. There is one info board I found, but it was so badly scratched, it was difficult to read.
C. T.
A really lovely spot to wander around with excellent views (that's why it was built there!) We were lucky enough to get a fantastic sunny day but very peaceful to wander through and admire the views. No entry fees or gates. Very impressed - as we were with the rest of Aberystwyth.
M. P.
Great to walk around and free to enter which made a refreshing change.
A. H.
It was lovely to explore the Castle ruins and area. Beautiful views from the castle across the town and bay.
P. U.
Free to visit the castle ruins, plus great view point to sea and in the early evening a murmur of starling's can often be seen.
S. E.
Alot of steep hills but great views
R. M.
Great views of the town and Cardigan bay
K. J.
Great playground for my grandson though some parts are not as child friendly as others
B. G.
Only small but very nice. Free to walk around, right on the coast line.
L. H.
Very enjoyable. Fantastic views. Lot of rubbish around though, with plenty of bins around.
M. M.
Great place for a nice stroll..
Nicely preserved ruins of the CASTLE and great views of the town... like many other people said, it needs more info, it would be nice to know what the markings on the stones mean...
Is Runic but needs explanation, but otherwise the place is fantastic for picture taking and relaxing
S. C.
Not much of it left but it’s free to wonder around and you get beautiful views over the beach and the town, definitely recommend stopping here if you’re in the area
P. M.
Great location, will be lovely when it's finished
M. C.
Great place for kids to run around & have fun playing hide & seek etc. Wonderful views& the best bit, it's free.
K. O.
We love a good windy walk around these ruins and always play and explore each time we go. The children love all the little hiding spots and we always get good photos from here. Some shots of our hide and seek game below x
c. b.
Very enjoyable visiting old ruins, lovely walk for my dog, nice to look out to the sea, on a good day it would be a nice place to have a picnic
A. H.
A quiet and very atmospheric place to sit upon a hill among ancient ruins to take in nearly 360 views over the sea and town
T. B.
Very nice and very clean.. lovely views
G. E.
Limited area to explore, however great views and some nice grass areas. Decent kids play area, crazy golf and toilets on site.
T. L.
A little dirtier than some of the other structures, but a bit more accessible. Fun to be able to walk on the ruins. The location is perfect, a great backdrop for pictures.
B. H.
Amazing place to visit
C. P.
A good example of its type but nothing more.
A. B.
Great place to visit with your grandchildren. The car parking spaces are a bit tight to get in and out of when the car park is full.
J. S.
Came on a hot and sunny day. Parking for all day was£3 until 10 pm.casltle ruins free to explore
M. P.
Combination old and new. Majestic ruins and very innovative and busy playground for the little ones. Unique in the most positive sense of that word.
p. d.
Went on a warm November day. Cracking views over the sea front. The castle itself is in ruins BUT still plenty to explore and a great playground next door for the kids.
n. u.
Hogwarts like castle on the seaside.

G. -. S.
Great of ruins, my daughter loved exploring them and especially loved the playground next door!

Me and the kids loved climbing around on this old ruin, imagining how it would have been. And there's a great play area right next to it with stuff for the little ones and the bit bigger ones too.

B.
Lovely spot to sit in the sunshine and has a great view. Could have done with some signboards telling visitors about the place.
S. B. o. t. S.
Great place to relax and enjoy the view overlooking the sea. Plenty of benches and places to sit. Close enough for refreshments etc May even spot the odd dolphin. Plenty of bins but sadly let down by peoples lack of respect to use them.
C. B.
Lovely to wander around the old castle. Great views of Aber and the sea. Toilet facilities available and a park if you have children.
d. C.
Great time with the kids, spent 40 mins looking round

L. S.
Very nice area to visit with great views. Only downside is that there was alot of rubbish.
D. M.

m. r.
Very peaceful ....nice st sunset but also day time
J. C.
Lovely clean grounds with easy parking, and facilities close by. Highly recommended.
D. H.
This is a nice little ruin to walk around in, and the attached park is nice if you've got kids.
P. I.
Great place to bring kids on a sunny evening. It has a large playground and beautiful green grass. Also the rock walls of the castle ruin can spark the imagination of both adults and kids.
A. J.
Great views, but very exposed on a windy day.
Decent amount of info boards and just about the right balance between ruination and restoration
C. H.
Although there's not much left of the castle, it's free and you get some amazing views and great for kids to roam around and play
A. M.
This castle is made out of real bricks … I went with by friends Kenneth and Rita and we counted over 872 bricks … we also saw a seagull hover over a bag of crisps
S. K.
Aberystwyth is a nice day out and while there the free castle on the front is nice to wander around. Not much left but just think of the fresh air.
M. A.
Beautiful place, history at its best
J. S.
Nicely preserved parts of the castle with cool illumination at night. Large picnic and play areas for families with children or groups of students looking for a nice spot to chill out.
S. J.

B. S.
A lovely chilled part of Aberystwyth to see, play park for kids, history for the adults & kids, public toilet near and so is PD's hut selling food/coffee/ice cream etc

E. T.
Wonderful delight and sight! Part of the castle ruins.
S. A. S.
Just wished weather was better 😪 but still a good place to visit
M. C.
Lovely views and worth a visit if you like this kind of thing. Only downside is that the information sign was well weathered so you couldn't see what it said.
K. B.
Nice castle grounds to walk around with a lovely large garden too.
M. H.
Great place to wander around ,plenty of benches to sit and take in the view across the bay.
D. D.
Very good ,history lesson done by my son Alex, so all good, found Welsh sticks of rock n fudge for my mate's back east in NEWBURY, very windy n rainy but did not dampen my day😍🤗🙏
C.
If you want to wear the kids out take them for a run around the castle and park. My grandkids always insist that they go when thier here on holiday. They will quit happily spend a couple of hours playing hide and seek and running over the castle ruins. Even though I tell them not to run but when nan is out of sight seems I'm out of mind to. Then after a good play they want to go on the crazy golf also by the castle. Then down to coffee 1 for milkshakes and cake. They buy thier own cake from pocket money as nan would need a second mortgage for 3 of them. By the time we have finished the shopping they are well and truly worn out. So you get a bit of piece and quite when you get them back home and nan is able to relax until dinnertime.
M. E.
Very nice views of the city in a well preserved tower and ruins of a castle , overlooking the sea and the old university
E. C.
Nice area shame the bridge was broke but lovely place the park was lovely for kids only down side the swings for baby's need shade but lovely day out
W. H.
The Castle Grounds are worth a visit if only for the views of Aberystwyth. It's a peaceful spot with some places to sit and admire the views.
L.
Popular for views over the sea and of Aberystwyth. A ruin. Free entry. Laid back. Lots of kids in the holidays. Children's play park adjacent with swings. Extremely close to the old town and small shops. Friendly urban environment. Parking nearby both paid and street. There are a few spaces for campervans in front of the main carpark near the castle. £7 for 24 hours but no facilities. Campervans are not allowed in the main carpark itself. If only staying for a few hours try to park on the promenade as it is free for 4 hours. Limited free parking availability during school holidays unless you bag a spot early or are lucky. If you don't mind a walk the carparks out between the Police Station and Morrisons usually have spaces.
Z. T.
The kids love the playground and its also nice walk on the castle ground. Hard to find parking nearby when its busy tho.
T. T.
Gorgeous old ruins with plenty of history and folklore. When standing in and amongst the castle you get a great view out into the Irish sea and along the coast. Definitely worth a visit.

A must see if you are visiting the area. Steeped in history and amazing views.

Great castle remains, which children can climb on. Lovely views of the sea front and located to a brilliant playground with lots of apparatus for children. Toilets in walking distance too.
B.
Right on the seafront, some interesting remains to look over..
D. b.
Loved the walk around great views
P. P.
Shame there was no inform boards around the castle telling the story of the history and pictures..
Small repairs (to the bridge) should have been done in the hight of summer holidays.
Better toilet information as my 6yr old found a chap peeing in one of the castles small private areas..
Beautiful castle with so many history..
N. N. (.

A nice spot to hit if you're visiting Aberystwyth, worth a little wander around. Nice coastal views.
j. d.
Amazing place , with superb views
G. W.
Aberystwyth Castle was a great day out, the location of the castle is fantastic, it gives wonderful views out across the sea. The war memorial, University building & the Church all come together to make a feast for the eyes although if its not your thing they are just nice buildings. The thing that stood out for me alai was that inside the castle grounds, there was a full circle of standing stones with what could have been an alter at the centre. I felt great energy here & had a lot walk all along the front too. Mario's ice cream is great too, yum!
W. D.
Great to explore, and fantastic views from all around. A must see in Aberystwyth
A. N.
Lovely location and grounds of the Aberystwyth Castle. Now the remains are ruins but it gives nice view of the surrounding area.
N. B.
This is a pleasant place to visit with great views of the sea there isn't a lot left of the castle to see but what there is is worth visiting
N. T.
If we're in Aberystwyth we always have a walk round the castle ruin, good views and a nice spot for a picnic. Play area for kids too. Free parking on the sea front.
D. A.

A. B. a. B.
Lovely place to visit especially on a sunny day.
R. P.
Stunning part of history with access to stroll the grounds.
Definitely worth a visit on a dark foggy night when it's lit up.
Features amazing panoramic scenes for the photographers out there or romantic spots for couples to sit and gaze out to the sea.
I. W.
Nice place to relax and chill
Z. L.
Quiet and beautiful, a perfect place for walking and thinking and viewing.
K. W.
Nice castle ruins and war memorial.
A. H.
Nice place but not controlled, you have people climbing over the ruins and what let it down for me was the fact that the church next to it had allowed grave stones to be moved and there were kids climbing all over them. They shouldn't have been moved in the first place but they wanted an open area.
R. S.
A really nice spot with amazing views over the sea. It's free entry and great for a picnic when the sun is out... If you have kids there are loads of areas to explore and run around. You so have to keep an eye as there's a few dangerous areas. One of the highlights spots on the Welsh coastline however.
A. G.
Excellent views and history!!
B. B.
Lovely place with amazing views, definitely worth a visit
J. B.
Beautiful site in a stunning location
I. C.
A lovely walk around the ruins with great views. Each tower has a QR code if you want to learn more information
D. G.
Beautiful scenery and if you're a younger family there's plenty of fun to be had nearby. Great adventure playground, shopping and restaurants and plenty of attractions dotted about. If you want a day of good mooching around and family fun rounded off with a great meal.... Definitely throw in a visit here, get some climbing in and watch the sea rolling against the rocks!
s. r.
Amazing castle grounds at Aberystwyth. What a wonderful castle it must have been. Lovely to see and walk on old steps and through an archway to see where a portcullis would have resided. The views are simply stunning, across the whole bay for miles. The playground for kids is great, with a variety of climbing, swings, slides etc. Love this area, we visit every year. Don't forget to like my review 😀
C. c.
A lovely area with great views
T. S.
Lovely place to go, bracing in bad weather great views in good weather, nice places to sit and watch the world go by. Quite adjacent to the main shopping streets and the beaches either side of the pier, and not far from the harbour too. What's not to like in a park on the waters edge with the remains of a Castle in it
J. R.
Quite well preserved and maintained.
M. J.
Nice clean place on pebble beach. Great fish and chips. Town centre not too far away with good array of shops and eateries
E. M.
Great place with rich with history. Definitely coming back
R. L.

J. K.
Nothing extravagant but a nice little stop to see something different.
A. M.
A nice place for a view our over the bays and the seafront and the promenade as a whole.
The ruins are nice and high up and the cathedral next to it is beautiful.
J. M.
Beautiful castle ruins right on the coast. An excellent place to stop and appreciate the scenery of Aberystwyth.
S. B.
Great views out to sea. Lovely old castle full of history - great place to teach kids about the past. Nice walks, toilets near by and a playground and picnic field on hand. Perfect for kids to let off steam!
D. P.
Well worth a wall around just for the views. There is however something magical about old castle ruins. And these are no exception.
Everyone uses these grounds whether it be for a historical visit, a family picnic, or simply as a place to sit and reflect on things. You see it all. Family's eating, sight seers, and groups of uni students having a little smoke (not hurting anyone) .. all going about their own business, but enjoying the day within the grounds. It's just lovely. Toilets and children's park close by.
R. G. H.
Amazing view
L. R.
Beautiful view of the sea, ruins not a whole castle, gardens are a lovely place to sit in the sun. Toilets. Cenotaph. Playground. Mini golf. Picnic tables & benches. Events held here such as remembrance day march, open air cinema, ice rink etc.
S.
Lovely walk around the castle.
M. M.
Looks much better on evenings...
J. A.
Not much of castle left but lovely elevated views of Aberystwith.
B. M.
A nice history place to visit. There I saw kids playground within it so there’s something to keep all happy.
K. H.
Always good but we fid see a problem with Drink etv. Not good where families are 😞
S. B.
Great, big place full of remainders of the old castle. There is a playground for the really young kids but if you trust them enough, they can have a great time climbing on and off the castle walls. (or what's left of them) there's a free restroom which is great and theres a pretty nice view of the sea and the boulevard.
G. C.
Peaceful place yo enjoy the views
M. S.
Free and open castle ruins to walk round and in. Free toilets are right next door (paid for disabled and baby change strangely).
L. S.
Great bit of history still standing.
S. B.
Beautiful coastal views
A. B.
It is sad that the old castle Is in ruins, but It is still very special. One can use one's imagination to think of what it must have been like and think of all the people that called this home once.
I was surprised that one could actually climb onto the ruins, but that gives it another level of interactivity and fun.
The 360 degree views are really beautiful and and although we had cloudy and windy weather, we still enjoyed our time there.
M. W.
Decent preserved remains of once Impressive Castle. Present times one of best spots to see outstanding panoramic view of Aberystwyth or to catch Beautiful sunset. Visible that is Maintained very well.
p. f.
A lovely place to visit. Very close to lots of amenities
R. R.
Stunning to say the least . Pictures don't do it any justice. Shame about the graffiti though.
A. M.
This place is a dream, looks right out of a movie set. Used to cone here with my work visits and stopped and had my lunch on the cslastle grounds so I can enjoy the marvelous views from here. Love this place and I always planned of coming back to visit.
P. T.
Nice place for a walk, with a kids play area and loos on the outskirts.
Worth a look of you're down that far.
B. E.
Castle playground...clean , plenty of things for the kids ....maybe a little safety changes on the pirate boat frame be needed ..
E. P.
The castle grounds are lovely, the castle is well preserved, the gardens are very kept, you can sit outside and eat, plenty of bins to put litter, a toilet for both sexes an disabled nearby, and there a lovely play area for the kids, well worth a visit😁
J. B.
Compared to other Welsh castles there's not a lot of the walls and towers left. But it's still quite atmospheric and a lovely place to make the most of Aber's coastal views. There are plenty of benches and picnic tables and grassy areas to sit and kids of all ages enjoy exploring the ramparts. It's also fairly accessible to pushchairs, wheelchairs etc if you don't mind a bit of a slope. There are public loos and a popular play park nearby.
B. S.
Really stunning views.
S. P.
Was quite the interesting walk. It is in my opinion a rather small area but yet interesting with some memorials as well. You can also walk up some parts which makes it even better.
As, however, said you will be only spending a short time there before you saw everything
T. O.
This is a must do with our children. Always clean and tidy and free. Lovely views of the bay.
L. H.
The castle is free to enter. The ruins stretch across a wide area. There are enough ruins to get an idea of the size and what the castle use to look like. There are wonderful views across Aberystwyth. There are public toilets near the castle.
C. M.
We got really luck with the weather on the day we visited. It's lovely under the sunshine. Really nice spot for a picnic, but plenty of benches to sit as well. The ruins are well preserved.
R. B.
A beautiful, clean, well cared for castle with a lovely play area for children. My three young boys love the whole area.

M. F.
Lovely walk round the ruins of Aberystwyth castle. Over looking the sea. Not much of the castle left. Lots loose brick work so be careful. Great for young and old alike.
W. B.
Castle ruins are well kept and in good order and safe to visit wonderful views across the bay and out to sea , your imagination takes you on a journey of discovery in to what it would of been like living in the castle in its hey day looking out for invasion from land and sea ready to plunder
A. W.
Nice set of ruins and breath taking view from the grounds, situated closed to the town and all its shops, food and drink areas and the beach. Recommended for the views, great for all ages.
D.
Easy to get to with fantastic views. Safe for children and interesting for the grown ups. The coast and scenery are so great that you have to visit this castle for the views.

Well kept and great views. The walls were a little shallow places considering there is a 25 foot drop in some spots so watch your kids.
J. G.
Lovely open space with some good places to read a book in the sunshine. Good playground adjacent for the younger children
M. C.

Good place for historic visit. Shows a Edward 1st Castle must have great in its day unfortunately it has been through many battles and weather about 800 years of existence.
B. B.
Great time with great scenery abd history
z. s.
Climb, climb, climb! I'm an adult and still enjoy getting to places without planning how I will get down. Just watch your kids, as it is a crumbly ruin afterall. Don't damage it too much.
J. G. (.
Great views, ideal for children
K. M.
Some castle ruins free to enter just look around
I. H.
FABULOUS place for all, especially kids!
(Hide & seek is AWESOME here! )
I. D.
Not much information that I could see but the ruins are extensive and views spectacular!
M.
Open area around the ruins of the old castle. The war memorial looks out towards the sea. Is a quiet area and a nice place to relax and saviour the quiet of the area.
H. A.
Really lovely, but take care at night because some of aber's "doppier" residents like to hang out here. Also there are lots of young people smoking illegal class b cannabis drug cigarettes here so watch out not to step on anyone's toes, especially a young man called jumping Jimmy, because I heard he once punched a horse and it died
A. J.
Great Location, excellent photo opportunity, u ducked 1 star for the winds, which of course you’ll expect hanging near the coast... excellent in the sun and quite relaxing for a walk or Pinic
N. W.
This is a great castle only a ruin but nice views and nice area to relax. This is a great place to visit if in the area.
A. O.
It’s ok for a walk.
Kids enjoyed running around.
There is a nice playground.
Some noisy teenagers but no problems.
M. P.
The views from this point are magnificent, however as a historical experience it is lacking, to learn more of its history you have to visit the museum in town, much more could be done to enhance the experience of visiting this historic site
S. R.
Lovely place to go for a wonder. Nice views of the pier and sea front. Can see a long way out to sea on a clear day.
L. W.
Lovely open space with great views of the town and sea. Interesting history and well preserved ruins. Great fun for children to explore
S. T.
Aberystwyth Castle (Castell Aberystwyth) was built in the late 13th century. Today it is mostly silt stone ruins but a great place to visit. It's free to enter the grounds and there is a children's playground, toilets, crazy golf and putting green near by. The castle has lovely views of the sea front, old college, constitution Hill and Pendinas.
S. H.
Nice free ruined castle. Lots of ruins to climb over and run around and some amazing views. Nice park for little ones just outside too.
M. T.

R. M.
Beautiful views. Great for young children to run round and let off steam. With a park right next to it and a crazy golf course. Brill.
E. S. J.
It's lovely but I feel like people take it for granted a little. Smelt like piddle in places and people climbing all over it.
T.
Nice to see a bit of history, but would be better if there was more information on who used, it when it was built etc, also quit alot of broken glass around so if you take pets or young children take care!
A. “. D.
Gorgeous, stunning and well kept... Always love walking through this part of Aber when I visit, the views, the history all make it feel special.
b. a.
Lovely castle and university buildings, a really clean and beautiful seaside town. Worth a visit. Good shops and restaurants too!

A ruined castle but with great little towers and the grounds are well kept. Situated on the sea front you would be hard pushed to get a better view of Aberystwyth.
M. M.
Beautiful sat by the sea and viewed the sunset

Covers just a small area but has beautiful views

G. W.
Lovely views out to sea.Kids will enjoy walking around the ruins sitting on the Canon and there is a playground when they tire of that
S. M.
It's the best view in the town. On a sunny day there is not a better place to sit and have cops and on a rainy day is the best place to watch the weather.
L. P.
This is a nice castle what else can i say lol, great to have a look around and of cause best of all its free unlike some other money grabbing gits! In a wonderful town i love aberystwyth, hoping some day to find a nice house there and move. Would highly recommend it!
k. g.
Well kept
C. R. H.
A pleasant ruin set by the sea. A children's playground is close by. Not easy to park in the summer months.
B. B.
Interesting place to look round and free entry, could do with some information boards.
M.
This timber castle (later reinforced with stone) changed hands repeatedly as the Normans warred with the native Welsh, who were firmly ensconced in this area of Mid Wales. The castle first fell to Owain Gwynedd in 1136. The castle's ownership switched at least three more times before being captured by Llywelyn the Great in 1221. Scholars believe that Llywelyn probably razed the castle and rebuilt another one in its place. It is not mentioned again until Edward I erected what is now known as Aberystwyth Castle a mile north of this site.
M. B.
Love what they have done with the place .. new carpets and lovely views.. could do with a little fixing up to become fit for purpose.
A. W.
Nice to walk around. Not much left but what is there is pretty intact
R. A.
Substantial ruins make up a nice little castle near the seafront of the large but still quaint welsh town of Aberystwyth. Free entry makes for a pleasant walk around and a decent view of the beach
J. S.
Beautiful manicured grounds around the old castle give a great view of Cardigan Bay.

C. D.
Lovely to walk around on a sunny day we grabbed sandwiches and coffee and sat on a bench in the castle grounds, I was really surprised it is free to walk around,
E. C.
Aberystwyth Castle was built by Edward I in response to the First Welsh War in the late 13th century, replacing earlier fortifications in the area. The Welsh took the castle just 5 years after it was completed in the 1282 war and both the castle and town were razed.
The castle was in a poor state of repair until 1404, when the castle was captured by Owain Glyndwr. At this time a treaty was signed between Glyndwr and the King of France at the Castle. It was retaken by the English and became an important seat of government.
Charles I turned the castle into a Royal mint, and in 1649 it was slighted by Cromwell, remaining a ruin ever since.
