Reviews of The Big Fish
J. B.
Very nice monument made of ceramic tiles. If you look closely each tile has a different scene from the history of Belfast city. On its eyes there are some photographs too. Great Belfast landmark that you should see if you stop by the city.
L. W.
I really like this sculpture. When you see it for the first time and from a distance, it looks blue and white. As you get closer, the fish scales reveal that they are made up of Belfast news snippets, which is quite cleaver and effective. There are lots of benches placed around the square where the sculpture sits. I think this is a cleaver piece of artwork that deserves to be seen.
M. N.
Very impressive! Each tile has a different image to watch and it's right beside Albert's clock and you can see the Goliath crane behind.
A.
Not much to say as it is what it says on the tin. It is part of the great experience I've had with all of the interesting art I've seen so far in Belfast. What a great way to make a city more interesting.
As well as a fun statue. This is also a great place to grab a bite to eat from the two street food vans here and sit looking out on the river.
L. T.
Cute little tourist attraction! Definitely recommend stopping by to see it if you’re in the area. Snap a fun and unique picture for the gram!
P.
Thoroughly enjoyed the extensive paths, bridges, waterways, parks and scenery around the Titanic quarter and beyond. Hire a bike at the big fish, take a picnic, theres lots of shops to buy food.
V. G.
Its a lovely bridge which connects two ends like all bridges do. This place was silent with beautiful skyscrapers on both sides. You can see the train tracks running parallel to it. Also there is a girl statue some where far from the bridge which you can catch a glimpse from this place. Just go for some nice pics.
A. A.
Its blue. It's big. It's a fish. It's a big fish. Not a lot more yo say really. Almost impossible to get a good pic as always people or kids hanging around by it but worth a look if you're over that way.
C. R.
Bigfish is a printed ceramic mosaic sculpture by John Kindness. The 10-metre-long (33 ft) statue was constructed in 1999 and installed on Donegall Quay in Belfast, Northern Ireland, near the Lagan Lookout and Custom House.
J. D.
The Big Fish also known as The Salmon of Knowledge is a printed ceramic mosaic sculpture by John Kindness. The 10-metre-long (33 ft) statue was constructed in 1999 and installed on Donegall Quay in Belfast, near the Lagan Lookout and Custom House. The outer skin of the fish is a cladding of ceramic tiles decorated with texts and images relating to the history of Belfast. According to the Belfast City Council, each scale "tells a story about the city". It is nice to see in person and probably does get a lot of children climbing over it despite notices.
m.
The Big Fish is a sculpture by the banks of the River Lagan and just in front of the Lagan Weir. If you get close enough to the sculpture, you'll see that the scales of the fish are actually ceramic plates and tiles. Some of the ceramics even have images from history related to Belfast.
Locals often call it "The Salmon of Knowledge", which sounds a lot more fun. A great photo op!
E.
It's name is 'Big Fish', sculpted by John Kindness in 1999. Not sure why it's called the Salmon of Knowledge on the map, as it has nothing to do with that tale but is about Belfast.
Z. K.
Pretty cool fish, its like made of ceramic, and the ceramic tiles have little newspaper prints on them. You have to experience it to understand. Climbing isn't allow of course, go experience.
B. B.
Nice place with good view and ok food stand next to it
G. H.
Forget everything you know about knowledge. All of humankind's knowledge has been condensed into one salmon, and that salmon is situated in Belfast.
Once the initial awe has subsided, visitors are free to stroke and touch the salmon, perhaps in hope of gaining some of its insights, or even virility.
Would touch again.
T. B.
The big fish is an eclectic mix of history and information, and definitely instagramable
L. M.
It’s in a nice area and it was on our way to the titantic museum. It’s very pretty. Not many people in the area taking pics of it so you will have opportunity to have many selfies alone with it ;)
I. I.
cool fish
D. J.
Very nice sculpture. Not much to do besides take pictures with it. Reading about the fish on Wikipedia so you understand the significance is helpful and fun!
J. C.
The big fish is undoubtedly worth a look, though any excitement soon wears off. However the nearby noodle bar presents an excellent photo opportunity. See attached photo of my mate Martyn posing for a shot, the fish can still be seen in the background too, so it's relevant to our topic.
R.
Very very helpful and friendly staff can be found here, any issue you have or any concerns regarding products in store or prescriptions to be picked up they are more than happy to help, its hard to find staff who are both willing and happy to help a customer in need with a smile!
I drive past a couple of different places to arrive at this one because the experience is above and beyond what is expected of them!
If you live in the area or are passing through be sure to try and grab the buts you need from this store!
Will definitely be back!
C. w.
I was skeptical at first about how big this fish would be but let me tell you this is One. Big. Fish! I’ve given it 4* because I would have liked more privacy to kiss this fish properly, perhaps they could set up a curtain so you don’t have to watch everybody else kissing it before you get a chance. Also personally I think it’s a bit cruel to keep this fish on land as fishes belong in the sea otherwise they start to dry out (this fish had very dry lips). They have a saying over here in Belfast, “there’s plenty more of those fish in the sea” but a fish this size is hard to come by so definitely worth a visit if you get the chance.
R.
Drake needs to visit here I will be happy to show him around
A. M.
One of those peculiar pieces of public art that nobody would ever personally buy, but is loved nonetheless by all.
Place is in a pretty random location, not exactly on the main thoroughfare to anywhere but a great location for an early run or as a marker on a late night stroll to or from the Odyssey.
C. R.
Full of knowledge. Beautiful and clean part of the city.
A. L.
Wonderful place to visit. Very close to Lagan River and Albert Memorial clock. Nice mosaic design. Good for photography. Children are not allowed to climb on the fish. Recently from Wikipedia I discovered that the Big Fish contains a time-capsule which store the data. Must visit place. Also you can find a seating place nearby, just to rest, if you are very tired.
N. J.
Such a lovely place to take a stroll. Hire bikes also available.
A. D.
A big fish made from china. Beautiful scenery around it at night. But maybe not worth for special visit.
A.
Ayooo a big fish in the middle of the city!? It looks awesome! I'm from Brazil and hope I can visit this place one day
F. G.
This is a good place for enjoying the view and getting some stunning pictures
E. C.
Nice to sit here on the riverside in the sun. A few food vans like to park nearby too, if you fancy a bite.
K. N. (.
iconic landmark by the riverside, probably one of the most recognizable symbols of Belfast after the h&w cranes. great place to rest your legs, grab a coffee from the Cafe next door and enjoy the vibe, or click some funky photos!
W. H.
Before you go to Titanic museum, it's worth to come here to take a look but not worth to only come here.
P. C.
One of the most popular attractions in Belfast. I recommend visiting after 3pm as there are no queues that time
N. W.
It's ok, it's on a Riverside bank with a lot of walkways ships etc and it's an enormous fish. I am sure I am looking to deeply for the reason of the dish but in truth on a fantastic week away in NI the big fish was one of, if not the, least interesting things I saw. Perhaps I just didn't get it? Please don't mock me, as a statue of a fish it was big and it was great but I sort of missed the point of it! However, that said, the local area was superb!
S. S.
Beautiful detail on each tile...I didn't kiss the salmon though!
C. W.
An interesting monument to Belfast and her vibrant history. An easy few minute stop while walking toward the Titanic district.
J. C.
I rate only 3 stars is that place is sited on a very busy road and for the visitors point of view may be a bit difficult to visit because no parking area to loading zone as such.
D. B.
The fish in the photo is that of the Atlantic Salmon, its in celebration of its species successful return to the River Lagan. This river was severely polluted during the industrial revolution in Northern Ireland and the worlds demand of linen.
This species of Atlantic Salmon was almost extinct to the Lagan,It was down to hundreds, while pre the Industrial Revolution,it was believed its numbers would have been in the Millions of returning Salmon to spawn, thereby securing its future. The river LAGAN is only a conduit & launch pad for the Famous Ship Builders H & W and the collective flow from its many small rivers and nursery burns.
P. L.
Cute fish!!!
J. A.
Great little place to stop and relax and watch the world go by..The fish is covered in pictures & stories. If you venture across the bridge there is also the Game of Thrones Glass
M. P.
Nice sculpture
D. H.
The all seeing eye ! What journeys has the eye been upon. Its gaze over the city, tourists abound, what will it see in the future ?
What did the right eye say to the left eye ....... ?
Between you and me, there’s something that smells
N. J.
Giant salmon covered in local articles which have faded to the point of being unreadable. Certainly unique though!
l. w.
Belfast Lagan side walk and Titanic glittering in the autumn sunshine
p. p.
It’s salmon. But you can’t eat.
I. R.
A big fish for sure! A nice location to have a selfie in Belfast
D. D.
This was on my "want to see" list, it didn't disappoint. Lovely sculpture, great pieces of tiling. Loved the fishes eye
M. W.
A very unique thing to see
M. M.
I grew up in Belfast and what a transformation its now actually a very nice city to shop and wander around the big fish thing has old photos and newspaper clippings from the past printed on its tiled surface so a bit of history to see
C. O.
Fun looking sculpture near the river
V. C.
Fun monument with random blue and white tiles with presumably bits of Belfast's history on them.
C. B.
Fun installation. Take a close look, many interesting panels to view.
N. P.
Beautiful monument with a nice view of the river
S. L.
Get up close, read the bits of information on the tiles. A lovely piece of Art by the Harbour & Docks
A. W.
It’s a strange thing, it’s close to the titanic experience.
H. T.
There is just a big fish statue here, you will find it on your to Titanic Quarter. Nothing special
R. P.
The Big Fish (The Salmon of Knowledge ) is a printed ceramic mosaic sculpture by John Kindness 10 metres long which was constructed in 1999 in Donegall Quay in Belfast, near the Lagan Lookout.
T.
A surprise big fish near the river. But don’t climb on it for your safety.
M. B.
Nice piece of are that have information or stories on its surface (that i think related to the history of Belfast)
D. W.
Great fun - lovely piece of art also 😄
G. G.
Should visit this place as it is in 10min walking distance from the city centre.
J. P.
We come here all the time with the kids. A really welcome space in the city by the river. There are a few other sculptures nearby, nice lounge style benches for a picnic. Great on a hot day. The sculpture itself is really worth getting up close to as it's made up of lots of tiles with loads of quirky historic details.
Y. V.
This is our first family holiday together and we travelled all the way from London just for a chance to catch a glimpse of the big fish. It was truly outstanding, the size does not disappoint and really lives up to its name.
F. W.
Belfast's icon. No more no less. Just sculpture. But nice. Easy to find.
A. A.
Very beautiful place. Can take photos and enjoy the sight of water from the bridge.
M. Ç. N.
Meticulous tiling, a really good piece of art here.
P. Q.
Beautiful relaxing part of the city and not too far away from city hall. Nothing spectacular, just a big fish but a beautiful scenery to sit on a comfy bench and have a scroll through Facebook, take a little dander or take a few photos.
L. O.
-This fish is splendid
-I love it
a. b.
Big fish is normal. Don't have huge expectations.
s.
Massive beautiful fish, just missing the chips :(. great place to relax and admire the lock lands.
E. C.
not so special, take a picture and then can leave
K. C.
10/10 most knowledgeable salmon I ever had the pleasure of meeting
C. C.
A VERY FAMOUS spot in Belfast - you need to walk past it once and have your photo taken! Links nicely to cross the river and to the Odyssey/Titanic Area - or back towards town for the Cathedral Quarter and City Centre. I would often use it as a taxi pick up spot on a night out :-) Also a very nice sculpture!!
W. F.
When you visit make sure you take a close look at the fish scales, each one is a tile with a story of Belfast life on it. The food trucks nearby are genuinely great too. I hope the “food truck craze” catches on in Belfast.
H. F.
A cold night visit to the Belfast big fish
A.
It was great touching this big fish! Opportunity of a life time!!!
M. R.
An interesting range of history littered upon the scales of the fish. It's supposed to be that if you kiss the salmon you'll gain all it's knowledge. It's a shame some locals decide to jump and climb but it's interesting to stop and look at the many scales and see Belfast history. Great sculpture
P. P.
Not sure what the point of a giant fish is to be honest? Best thing about this area is grabbing a sighting of a skateboarder making a tool of himself and losing his board in the lagan! Would recommend watching that now.
T. D.
Awesome landmark. If you look closer to the eyes and the scales, you'll see photos/pictures of Belfast. There was a sign which says "no climbing", so no breaking laws, guys. The fish is within walking distance from Titanic museum. Besides, it was located at one end of the bridge, and very close to Albert Memorical Clock, which was another awesome landmark.
S. G.
A must for Belfast!! It was a very special and magic experience. Arriving at the Fish, a Rainbow appeared!
B. F.
Very pretty. Excellent views on a nice day.
K. M.
Enjoyed are visit, photo opportunity, gtreat to learn about the sculpture and how and why it was made
S. S.
Belfast is an amazing place
m. h.
Very unique friendly staff and stunning food.
G. M.
Belfast Waterfront has changed so much for the better since my youth. Well worth a visit, there are some lovely walks and plenty to see. The Big Fish is a great exhibit.
A. C.
Lovely statue, but more information about why it is there is needed.
M. S.
It’s a big fish, apparently to scale of the biggest catch off the Belfast coast
P. Ó. C.
Isn't it funny how a monument such as this can be so well known in a city, or a city can be so well known for such a monument. It's in a nice original part of Belfast anyway. Lots of history around this part. Which you can plainly see. I'm certain the fish plays a part of that history somehow.
V. J.
This is nice place for photos only. A big fish in the Bank of River Lagan. Every tile in fish has some pictures of Belfast city places. It's eyes are also special. A few minutes walk from Belfast Titanic.
O. S.
Move over Eiffel Tower, the Big Fish is now the must see tourist attraction of the world! You will never be the same person after looking into its stoic gaze - thanks to the big fish I now possess infinite wisdom and knowledge. A truly unforgettable experience.
A. E.
It is one of the characteristic symbols of Belfast. If you are visiting Belfast, it is a good idea to take a photo with the giant salmon. The design matches well with pictures, whether group photos or selfies. There is nothing much to watch, but it is probably on your way.
K. R.
Great statue adorned with little panels depicting Belfast history. Good photo opp and has views along the Lagan. Good quick little stop on the way to the Titanic museum.
O. K.
Stopped in for poutine, sat on the benches there to enjoy our Canadian National dish, and gaze upon the big fish. It was a nice day to be out walking around Belfast.
L. G.
You can take good pictures there with the river in the background or from the other side with the buildings behind. It's a good picture to represent that you've been in Belfast.
D. O.
Great landmark. Looked for directions once in Belfast on the way to W5. Local lady said "keep going on on down this road 'til ye see the big blue fuish". An expression that cracks us all up since.
a. p.
If you happened to walk around Belfast or perhaps taking an independent city tour, you could stop by the quay and find a bench near this monument. There's a food truck nearby, selling chips and such. It was quite a treat.
R. S. (. w. R.
Definitely one to visit if you're a tourist in Belfast. Perfectly situated by the bridge that takes you toward the Titanic Exhibition. Worth spending a bit of time reading the scales on each side.
M. W.
A nice landmark and a great photo opportunity. Come closer to see pictures from Belfast or just sit nearby and enjoy people watching. Great meeting point.
l. G.
Really awesome statue, every tile tells a story. Doesn't look odd or out of place n am fairly sure it should. Worth a visit n a photo or two.
T. (.
I learned so much from this salmon, it was a life changing experience. I wept, then cheered with joy.
A. B.
Iconic part of Belfast. The fish is a mosaic of Belfast's history. Make sure to get up close to have a look. It's located right on the water, with the river, titanic exhibit and cranes in the background - the Belfast skyline.
E. R.
THIS WAS THE BEST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. I can honestly say Big Fish or as I like to call him Bigfish is a simply delightful spot to do any activity you please. From summoning your favourite demon to having a snazztacular rave this 10 meter long kindness sculpture is the only one for me.
Signed gratefully,
Your local QUEEN.
D. P.
I'm not sure quite what to say about the big fish - other than it is a fish and it is errr well pretty big. It keeps the kids amused for about 10 minutes and the nearby seal sculptures amuse them for another 10 mins. Apparently you can text the fish - although I didn't try that - to get more information about it and the area.
s. k.
Good place to sit in the evening
J. C.
I love this statue! It is so cute! Again it is worth to see it!
B. R.
Loved the fish. Very solid. No Maltesers.
B. M.
The Salmon of Knowledge. A child friendly piece of public art. Images were contributed by local schools and day centres. It actually has a time capsule buried underneath and my son's poem is in it so it's very special to me.
S. F.
Very peaceful area. Usually hard to get a pic of the whole thing with the amount of people around, but you can climb on top of it for a laugh. And boy is it a laugh, like I'm talking real laugh out loud haha funny. All your mates will think you're a legend.
T. G. T.
Love the sight and proximity to other few attractions
J. R.
Magnificent. Beautiful. Truly a masterpiece of our time.
M. A.
I enjoyed my visit
C. F.
The Big Fish reminded me where I buried a time capsule in 1993, and also gave me some great advice on investing overseas. "Knowledgeable" doesn't do this fish justice! Might I suggest The Enlightened Salmon
A. H.
Interesting stature near the city centre
a. p.
Fantastic pictures and stories
W. C.
Right where,s this big fish there talking about🐠🐟🐳🐋🐬🦈
M. L.
All the statues around belfast have a meaning behind them... this is a lovely sculpture but when you're in a hurry to the arena you can't really appreciate the work that's gone in to it. Nice to see tho
R. L.
You must visit the big fish and take a photo. It's right on the River Lagan beside the bridge to cross over to the Titanic Quarter. Beside was a mobile truck selling street food.
J. F.
Beautiful sculpture in Dublin. Shame that it was raining heavily when visited.
M. C.
Peaceful place near the river but very approachable from the city. The fish is beautifully designed, you need to get up close to understand the details.
K. B.
Photogenic place, especially lit at nights 👍🏻
D. K.
Great place for walks and your surrounded with opportunities of places to walk visit eat or drink.
H. E.
Very pleasant public space with the fish sculpture near the waters edge. Nearby food outlets and lagan tour boats. Ceramic scales on fish sculpture show local history.
G. B. R.
A lovely place by the river to hangout during the evening. Lots of fresh air and a nice ambience.......The Titanic Boat Tour is a must see.....
H. T.
Well worth a stop to visit this public piece of art and perhaps gain a little knowledge at the same time. Easy to locate, usually not too busy, and close to where the tour buses depart from.
I.
Great photo opportunity.
S. S.
I didn't initially understand why it's called the salmon of knowledge.. But I realized if you probably sat beside it in one of the Parkside benches you might be enlightened.. Nice place to take a casual stroll..
K. H.
You cannot visit Belfast and not see one of their best attractions - The Big Fish! Brilliant photo opportunity and very easy to find
M. A.
Had a nice cup of coffee by the salmon, nice spot
s. p.
Big fish
K. W.
It's iconic and worth a visit! It is also near the 'beacon of hope', although that's not what the natives call it.... If you rub the fish, its brings you luck, so say the local river folk !
M. C.
It's a big salmon. It's free to see. I would say it looks more like a trout, but that's just my opinion.
T. S.
Popular landmark and photo spot in Belfast, by the footbridge across the river.
Don't just pose for a phot and move on, but take your time to look at the tiles that make up the sculpture, they tell the story of the city.
A. M.
A must in Belfast! Don't forget to kiss its mouth!
L.
I always want these things to be bigger! But its beautifully done and the pictures from history are intriguing. Also you can text talk with it! Just follow the instructions on the poster beside it.
S. A.
A good photo-op place. Interesting history on Big Fish is that it was built to commemorate the return of Salmon to River Lagan after 200 years.
M. D.
Beautifully made , love going on a quoet sunday morning! John kindness is an amazing artist and hes tells a story through each tile on the fish.
L. F.
There's not much information on this at the statue itself. We visited it on the way back from the titanic museum. It made for quite a few funny photos and selfies.
T. C.
Cool statue of a fish. There were several food trucks and what I assume was a special event - a show of traditional Irish dance by school kids.
M. G.
I was here getting the best, most delicious and freshest fish tacos from Taquitos. If you're ever in the area please go and try it out, you won't be disappointed. They do different kinds of tacos, they have rice bowls, guacamole, Pico De gallo and sauces with different levels of heat. There are many Mexicans that go to Taquitos because of its authenticity. The chef and owner Gary is amazing and so is his food.
E. F.
Mmmm large fishe
k. r.
Great fish, good landmark for fire drills
C. M.
Great open space near the river - with superb views - the fish is interesting as covered in old photographs of Belfast. To the rear of the Albert Clock and Custom House.
C. W.
Best placr in Belfast, if you want the best Tacos in the UK. Taquitos is a taco truck that has hit the city around this time.last year. Absolutely recommend going to the big fish just to try a Taquitos. Gary and Joe create a welcoming atmosphere, bith charsmatic individuals providing good humble food.
M. S.
Beautiful spot, great view of the river lagan.
S. π. H.
It's just tin sculpture of salmon with pictures of random things on it .
T. M.
A mosaic made into one of the iconic architectural structures synonymous with belfast. Right beside the foot bridge that leads over to the SSE arena and '5ws'
T.
Beautiful place to visit in night
D. B.
Blue fish to celebrate returning of the salmon to the harbor. Do not kiss it, folks. It’s time capsule as well as it caught some news.
M.
Nice and interesting broken tile design all individual. Impressive size too. Seen it twice now and still liked seeing the second time.
j. l.
Check out the Taquitos stand. Excellent food. All made by him from scratch. Chorizo too. Homemade tortillas and fresh toppings. Salas have great flavor.
K. A.
Great view! Amazing details on Belfast history on each tile. Great place... Must visit.
g.
Giant fish next to the pedestrian bridge. Said to be lucky if you kiss it. All the scales are local history, photos and drawings
D. D.
Pretty but not such a big deal. Not worthwhile to go and have a closer look if you are on one of the Hop- On-Hop-Off Tourist Tour buses.
P. S.
This place was pretty hit or miss--some food was good while the rest was a little disappointing. The place was cute though--bring your Sterling-they don't take credit cards!
J. H. (. F.
The mighty big fish was a spectacle.
He saved me from 10,000 years of suffering and death by giving me the hope i needed.
A. G.
Wonderfull peace of art of Belfast legacy and History past and present, engraved in ther ceramics, of blue tons of different shapes. Alfredo
R. K.
Nice monument to see.
For those who are coming for the first time,
you can find the car park building just near by on the right hand side.
O. C. S.
If your up there defo go see it.
C. C.
Lovely place, nice attraction
P. C.
I lived in great Belfast for my 19 years and this place always made me cheer up.
R. D.
Visiting the place on last Monday of bank holiday on May
Big crowd was maritime festival and big ships was anchored three plus the continental markets amazing
M. C.
A nice statue just near the water which is worth just a quick visit. Not much to say about it, nice place to sit and view the water or the city on the other side.
J.
Fabulous location by the river, interesting sculpture with bridges across and walks alongside the water. A lovely space.

This isn't called the salmon of knowledge, from the sculptor himself he has no idea where this came from. This was purposefully called the bigfish (all 1 word) as he knew the locals would rename it this anyway
A. M.
