Reviews of Ulster Museum

Brilliant range of local history going from the geological formation of the land up to the troubles. We only had time to look at the history but it was clear that they also have great science and art displays. Easy to navigate through and the staff are helpful and friendly. Very clean and safe environment with plenty of toilets. Situated in the very pleasant botanical gardens.
S.
Very enlightening and enjoyable experience. The game of thrones props are incredible and the staff was friendly and making sure that not too many people are entering the exhibition at once. You can easily book a ticket online but you might want to do it a little in advance.
The exhibitions range from nature and animals to local history and even art.

Great experience, really love this museum, relaxed atmosphere, well organised, really widespread collection with a bit of everything and good facilities like the cafe, shop and toilets. Royal academy of arts exhibition was fantastic. Our now teenage kids and friends enjoyed it too.
P. G. S.
There are 5 floors with different exhibitions, about absolutely everything. It’s one of the must-see spots in Belfast. It's free but please do not leave without making a donation. The experience the museum offers is worth at least £5. 😉 There's also a gift shop and a coffee shop. And also very cleaning bathrooms! AMAZING!
F. A.
One of the best museums I have visited. Packed with years of history. The layout of the building is the best! Allows for easy movement from one section to the other! A must visit if you’re ever in Belfast, a city like no other in the UK!
z. X.
There are many exhibits and they are completely free to the public. It is worth spending half a day to visit. There are some exhibits about Game of Thrones. If you are interested in the history of Northern Ireland, it is highly recommended.

Great place to take the kids (or not) and enjoy admission free day at this great Museum. You can easily spend the day here and top floor (level5) has a Kids zone for craft work and dressing up. (Note: closed between 1-2pm for lunch). Gift shop and restaurant on btm floor.
B. W.
Gorgeous artifacts and art. Obviously, great spot for Game of Thrones fans. I was actually expecting more from this museum... It's lacking some interactions to enhance the items
C. F. d. S.
It's free, just go!!! Not too close to the city centre but is definitely worth the visit! Spent 4 hours there and couldn't see it all, I'll have to go back!
Great museum, enormous, loads of interesting things to see!
K. M. C.
I've loved this place from I was a young girl. Now I'm taking my children. Whom also love it. Everytime you go you notice something different. Staff so friendly. Definitely worth spending a few hours here.
S. C.
A great place to spend a few hours. Very clean and family-friendly museum. The top floor currently has a gallery full of amazing art work by young aspiring artists. Check it out if you are in town. They also have a gift shop on the ground floor with lots of cute stuff!

Visited around noon a few weeks ago. It was really peaceful and quiet, perfect for a stroll to escape the buzzing city. I was pleasantly surprised by the Christmas decorations and light trail. Even though they weren't lit during the day, the decorations were still interesting to look at! The Ulster Museum is also located near the main entrance of the gardens.

What a museum, everything any visitor would want to see in Belfast from the Derry Girls school chalk board with the differences between Catholics & Protestants' to stories about the 'troubles' or the local history of Belfast. The brutal list design of the museum is great, my favourite, lots of concrete and no windows, a great contrast to the traditional original museum. Lots for kids and adults to take part in, fossils, a Mummy plus many interesting facts about the world we live in. Head to the fantastic Maggie Mays restaurant across the road for an all day Irish breakfast but save space for an ice cream or milkshake afterwards. Me a d 5No friends spent a good 3-4hours there, start at the top 5th floor and work down to ground. There is more to see on each level, give yourself time to enjoy the history of the place.
J. H.
Great couple of hours here with the kids. Lots to see and interactive elements that kept all the kids entertained.
Would definitely recommend heading here especially if the weather isn't great because it's all inside.

A dander around Botanic Gardens led to a cafe trip in the museum and a potter around the shop. The cafe is great but service is slow. It’s managed by a social enterprise, Loaf Catering, who work with people with learning difficulties and autism. The food is great and the prices are decent for what you get. There’s plenty of space in the cafe and some seating has views over Botanic Gardens. The shop is crammed full of all manner of things: books, postcards, jewellery, ceramics, toys, stationery, scarves, Christmas gifts and crafts. You could spend ages looking around. Tickets to the museum itself are free but you need to book them online due to COVID so there was a queue for people wanting to visit it. Parking isn’t great. You just have to hunt around the nearby streets.

It was amazing. We arrived late because we forgot to go but the staff still allowed us to get in which was really nice. So here we are starting the tour following the yellow line which get you through the history of Ulster from all different eras. The troubles are well documented. I loved the punk scene. There are dinosaurs, fossils, canons, gold coins, a mummy well whatever you or the kids want to see is there. Please it is important to give some money to the museum because they are not funded by the state. It is free but do not take it for granted. It is also on the Belfast sightseeing tour so you can hop off there at the botanic gardens and hop back in to finish the tour through the Falls and Shankill roads. So enjoy. It's one of the best museums ever.
R. B.
Plenty to see for different kind of interests. It was a bit confusing at times what way to walk through exhibition to follow correct time line but it was still interesting and very informative. Limited numbers are let in and hand sanitizers available so it felt safe enough. And it's free (can't beat that) but there are donation boxes throughout the museum so you can decide how much the visit was worth.
A. K.
A beautiful and interesting museum with extensive collection. It is located near botanical gardens and queen's university and very easily accessible through public transport. The entry to the museum is free with an advance booked slot. A curious mind can easily spend whole day exploring the museum. It covered a lot of local history, arts, geology, botany, wildlife etc etc.
All the covid protocols were followed with sanitizer etc available throughout the premises.
Loved our visit.
M. C.
Located inside the Botanic Gardens this is a quaint little museum. It is free to visit. It has small varied exhibitions about history and science. Very well spent time.
J.
A museum that covers the history of Ireland in many different aspects. Social and political history, culture and human development. The nature and geology of Ireland. Interesting and interactive. Fascinating relics from various historical period. Takes at least 3 to 4 hours. Nice cafe, bathrooms. No parking so we parked on the streets. Be careful as there are many permit only streets and limited time spaces that you need to pay for at the meters. Lots of parking attendants about! We walked through the Botanical Gardens which are a lovely peaceful space with amazing indoor conservatories. Recommended
M. E.
Not so big like London museums but I like it and have a lot of good historical .......
I recommend it 👌
I. P.
Amazing place. Easy to find, a very large museum, it is possible to move away to the old past and find yourself in the present. Learn the history of things, animals, birds. Irish history.
I. A.
Ulster Museum is all about history! It has a lot of prehistoric stuffed animals, prehistoric tools, prehistoric stones that were used to build tombs, prehistoric gold coins, prehistoric clothes and a mummy as well! You must to be very careful when you go from one room to another. Don't follow only the lines on the floor, there're rooms in the left sides and the right sides as well. Make sure you don't miss any of them! The museum is huge, but the rooms are built very tricky. Tbh, I think I missed some rooms unfortunately...
A. Ď.
After visiting many museums I was still fascinated by the structure of the Ulster museum. I believe their chronological of the world and humanity is something not every museum has and definitely worth a visit. For me personally the "Troubles" collection was the most educative and interesting.
M. S. D.
Best museum I visited so far, need 3 to 4 times to finish all galleries.
M. B.
Lovely to the see the breadth of creativity exhibited in the RUA exhibition 2021, with skills across all sectors of the fine arts in painting, sculpture and video.
M. C.
Amazing museum near the campus of Queens University. Excellent exhibition covering the years of the troubles. Highly recommended
D. W.
Great mix of many items. Haven't been since the week before it was closed for renovations. A lot of exhibits closed and some interactive elements not working or badly damaged. Some upgrading needed but overall great few hours.cafe staff and food were all lovely. Disappointed no literature in the gift shop about the temporary photographic exhibits. Fantastic emotive works that are a must see.
S. B.
Nice day out with the children loads of educational things to see. Free admission but donations welcome.
Z. S.
I loved a number of things I had never seen before: the extinct flightless bird Dodo, The elements table with actual elements, very dangerous radioactive toys for children (they did not know in the past that radioactive is dangerous!), etc. I visited the museum a couple of times and can still go back and visit.
R. J.
Friendly staff with great experience, suitable for families with children.
R. O.
Beautiful museum with a lot of artifacts about first era animals. We enjoyed roaming around seeing the throne in game of Thrones and the 3 dragons just flying around the ceiling and it’s for free.
C. S.
Museum has an extensive collection worthy of a couple of hours visit. Section on Irish history very educating and interesting.
T.
zero parking facilities. exhibits are good, catering for varied interests incl kids of all ages. staff friendly and knowledgeable.
N. T.
The Ulster Museum, located within in the Botanic Gardens in the midst Belfast, has around 8,000 square metres of public display space, featuring material from the collections of fine art and applied art, archaeology, ethnography, treasures from the Spanish Armada, local history, numismatics, industrial archaeology, botany, zoology and geology.
It is the largest museum in Northern Ireland and entry is free.
Ulster Museum is the home of Northern Ireland's treasure.
Prepare to spent about 2-3 hours, super friendly staff.Very easy to access using public transport or private.Restaurant inside is slight overpriced.
A. D.
This is an interesting museum with a bit of everything crammed into every bit of space. There are rooms with themes, but the main stairwell is filled with a bit of everything.
We were able to watch a movie as a special event which needed to he pre-booked. The film is shown in a mini lecture theatre, the films tend to be aimed at children. The theatre was comfortable and spacious.
M. N.
Amazing Museum, very interesting architecture and a really modern display.
There's art, nature and history all together and rooms with kid friendly activities, the personal is super friendly and always close by to teach you something new and interesting.
We live close by so I go at least once a week with my 2 year old daughter.
I. A.
A nice place for a day out. Very big and diverse. You get history, animals and art. Friendly staff. Nice cafe with good options. And the botanic garden is adjacent to it. All for free ! Don't skip it if you have the time !
L. K.
A modern museum located in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens housing global collections of art, history and natural sciences. Entry to the Museum is free, making it a great day out for the family. The Museum is layed out into 3 different routes, which makes it easier to discover particular exhibitions of interest. The section dedicated to 'The Troubles' is an absolute must.
G. C.
Ulster museum is a wonderful spot to visit, great for the kids with lots of space for them to explore and many interactive things to do.
R.
Always a lovely day out with the family here. Plenty to keep the kids engaged with, especially the more hands on sections around art and nature.
If you're planning to go, book in advance to avoid any potential queues. The cafe also seems to stop serving hot food around 3pm so take that into consideration.
H. T.
Lovely way to get the day in. Blown away from start to finish, even the kids enjoyed it. After all the walking and reading was done, down stairs again for some grub. Booked in again for next weekend. Loved it!
B.
Brilliant place to take the kids when you have the chance. So much to see and learn about. The buildings layout is easy to navigate and plenty to see on every corner. It was a chilly day when we went so the building was lovely and warm!
S.
My son enjoyed the Museum. We went to see the Mummy, glad the exhibition was open. A little to young for other exhibits, but he enjoyed himself
M. M.
It's no surprise the Ulster museum was voted best museum in the UK several years ago. It hurls history and learning against each other and makes the visitor think about the relationship between what's in the past and its link to the present. A dinosaur sitting beneath an automobile. Fuel for the future. A wonderful, hands on experience.
D. W.
A very mixed collection of artefacts. The theme is the troubles but also very interesting. Friendly staff. I liked the large Irish Wolfhound.
j. r.
Great Displays from all years great Art Display on at present well worth a visit and it's Free! (Need to book ticket on-line)
K. W.
One of the Great place to visit in Belfast. It is huge inside and you could see lods things as well(eg.history, art and so on). The main thing is definitely need to book,bc it is free and too popular. Love it!!!
M. C. I.
Absolutely amazing experience at the Ulster museum. Free in and the children loved it. Especially the dinosaur bones. I particularly enjoyed the Irish history and the troubles sections. So brilliant.
Don't forget to leave a tip in the tip jar or with a swipe of your card I'm sure they rely heavily on people's donations, although they dont ask for it and it's up to your own discretion.
Couldn't recommended the place enough
1.
Really nice visit, wonderful displays.
Went with my 10 year old granddaughter, she was engaged by the exhibits and got involved with the "see, touch do" nature room
I enjoyed the gallery and the natural history exhibits.
Highly recommend, COVID secure
Top tip. Book on line and skip the que.
L.
Only objection is the higgledy-piggeldy layout of some displays. The building was quite warm. Only my preferences. Everything else was perfect! That includes the folding stool I was loaned. There are plenty of seats around for people like me that need to rest. Free entrance was wonderful. Very happy we visited. Recommended!
S. P.
nice museum lots of artifacts on show rally does show the history of Belfast, only a short distance from the city center.
L. H.
Enjoyable day out with the family. My son who is 10 would of liked more time to have read and discovered what everything was in the museum. My son and daughters enjoyed the discovery sections especially the nature one.
R. T.
Very nice lunch though not a lot of choice, very little vegetarian and vegan. Can sometimes be difficult to follow exhibits. I wanted to see costume collection but couldn't find it however it's on until June I'll have to try again.
T. P.
Very well placed in the Botanic garden. The coffee area is lovely and the museum is informative and interactive. However, it lack of actual art and feels empty.
J. c.
A great museum that I had not visited since school myself. Unfortunately some of the interactive parts were out of service but our children had a fun time and the food from the cafe was very good
A. K.
Best day out in years with my 8 year old grandson for a birthday treat..botanic train station minutes walk away..free admission to the great exhibits the museum have to offer..just paid a £5 donation but spent £15 in the gift shop which was actually a bargain as I got 5 crystal necklesses..the sun was shining so got a subway near by and had a picnic in botanic gardens and visited the tropical house also free..magical day out.. advise everyone to visit..
P. N.
Nice place to go on a rainy day, a bit of everything from nature to history and art. It is also for free, because of pandemic restrictions I had to book a time slot before hand but didn't wait too long to get inside.
D. J.
It's free! Depending on when you go, it might get loud/chaotic with drives of school children.
D. K.
Great place to take the kids. You could easily spend a day there. If you do and the weather is good take a picnic as the Botanic Gardens are right next door.
T. H.
The museum is fine, with lots of items in, but is badly curated. The lines on the floor seem to take you through some collections backwards. It's also not that informative, lacking a clear thread in each collection. Free to enter.
S. E.
Absolutely love this museum and so does my 5 year old daughter. Lots to see and very covid safe. Lovely cafe too
C.
Great and very informative for children. Glad to see some different exhibitions within the museum keeping the museum from becoming stagnant and boring. Cafe on site well looked after.
T. J. S.
You need to reserve your "Timeline" in advance. The Museum cost nothing so definitely a good thing. It's also quite interesting and a must seen thing in Belfast.
K. E.
Lovely museum with a little bit of everything
C. N.
An extensive range of different types of exhibits. Well curated and staff were very pleasant and knowledgeable. Good facilities offered for visitors.
D. B.
Excellent museum with a range of different exhibits, from science and natural history to art and history. Good cafe as well. Next to the botanical gardens, which are also worth a visit.
v. r.
Museum was brilliant, staff extrenwly helpful knowledgable and friendly, visitied with the kids 5y/o and 7y/o seemed to keep them fairly entertained, toilets easily accessible and place safely layed out. No wait for entry and place wasnt to busy at entry, visited on a sunday afternoon and even had a small shark information event on that was also free entry. Think the place runs mostly on donations so would be very well appreciated if it was kept open
m. m.
Hasn't really changed much since I was young kids enjoyed it could probably do with clear directions of which is the best route around the museum so you don't miss the best bits but again it's always a good afternoon when you visit the museum.
M. M.
Excellant, my granddaughter age 2, my grandson age 5, had 3hrs in the museum, including scones+juice, fabulous place , lovely staff, very informative, helpful, spoke+had conversations with my grandchildren which was wonderful to see. Im returning my self this thur 2 view all of exhibits I missed+2 enjoy very nice latte
J. M. C.
Had a wonderful day at the museum, really enjoyable. Sad that there is no William Conor paintings, a Belfast man too, let's hope next time I visit Northern Ireland and the museum one of his works will be displayed.
J. B.
Brilliant museum and one of the best tourist attractions in Belfast. The displays are spread out over four floors. My favourite is on art and paintings on the top floor and the treasure from the Girona shipwreck is truly a world class exhibition. There is a lovely cafe, which is run by Loaf, and shop in the same building on the ground floor. The museum is beautifully located in the Botanical gardens.
O. H.
Lively place for kids! Quite educational for adults as well with video, audio and presentations about Ireland history, geography, et al. The dinosaurs and other animals are my favourite!
A. B.
Really interesting and impressive.
I suggest a lot 🤓👍
s. a.
Good place, need at least 1 hour in each segment.
N. S.
Definitely recommended!!
The best thing is it's free and it contains a lot of information regarding History, Arts and Science. It's worth visiting there with a family but make sure to spare 2-3 hours atleast to see the museum properly.
Apart from that they have restaurant downstairs as well incase you need coffee, snacks or anything else.
p. m.
I live nearby and was so glad when it re-opened. There are four new exhibits (that I noticed, there may be more).
First seen (and nearly missed, as I walked the museum from the ground up) was a small but interesting little section on the pandemic with a good selection of material both old and new relating to the current situation and previous pandemics in Ireland.
The next new exhibit is a temporary exhibit of Willie Doherty's work (only until September '21). The website says suitable for all ages, but I doubt the younger folk would have much, if any interest in most of it, and parts (darkened rooms with videos) could be very scary for some as I found some of them quite traumatic myself and I'm no longer young. To do it justice takes at least a couple of hours.
The third was just after that, a large space with a lot of different things related to the partition of Ireland. I did not spend long there as it was near the end of my bottom to top trek, and I was too tired to give it my full attention. I will be back to revisit that. It will be around a bit longer until November.
The last (another temporary exhibit that will be gone at the end of August) is an exhibit about the blitz in Belfast. It was just by the exit, so easily missed. I did not stay for the whole show (it is a film related to a walking tour, so another one for another day).
All in all a fine way to spend an afternoon. You could easily spend an entire day here with a break for lunch and still not see everything.
H.
Excellent layout of exhibits on each floor. Staff, where asked, were very helpful as to details of items.
Missed the cafe, but, I'll be back!
P. H.
Great Museum with an amazing array of exhibits and educational areas, can't recommend this venue highly enough, well worth a visit if you find yourself in Belfast with a few free hours!
q.
Our family really enjoyed walking around and exploring the Museum. Plenty to see and learn from. Well layed out and staff helpful. Nice ending for the kids where they can use their artistic skills to show what they've learned.
A. H.
Good place to visit with a wide range of interesting items on display, from ancient history, arts to natural science. Free admission.
h. p.
So much to see here. A real Egyptian mummy, dino bones, Irish history... 3 interactive rooms for kids where staff are happy to answer kids' questions. All for free! Amazing!
B. F.
Wonderful (and free) museum covering diverse subjects. A mummy, loads of rocks and paintings and an absolutely excellent exhibition on the Northern Ireland troubles.
A. D.
Good exhibitions and great array of artifacts. Enjoyable for whole family. Still working on covid and 1 way system but is free entry despite the feeling from the sign in booths
J. D.
really good.
free entry.
D. M.
Lots and lots of interesting things
A. M.
Lovely little museum. Plenty of interesting information. Due to COVID there is a one-way system which seems to take you backwards through the exhibits, which we found a little confusing at first.
G. M.
An excellent attraction for curious minds, young and old. Helpful friendly staff and a wide range of exhibits make the Ulster Museum a must see for locals and visitors alike.
J. L.
Very interesting throughout, however not that many one off wow pieces but the collections are interesting and informative. Very well put together museum if you want to know Ulster history. The wow section I found in this museum was the Game of thrones tapestry and the iron throne chair woven by a master basket maker who also hand woven the three giant dragons displayed centre of the Ulster main museum. lovely cafe and gift shop.
A.
This is a fantastic Museum. So much to see you could spend an entire day wandering round. Beautifully laid out which means it never really feels crowded even when there are hundreds of visitors attending at the same time. The shop is amazing and is packed with beautiful gifts to suit everyone. The famous ' Dippy' the dinosaur is arriving in September 2018 and is really worth seeing. Admission is free and the staff are friendly and helpful.
A. E.
Loved it, is great for kids and adults, has everything in it, starting with paintings and continuing with the biggest diamonds, dinosaurs, mummies and a lots of surprises along the way.
D. G.
Very diverse and presented very well. A great experience that covers a wealth of topics from history to art to science, all to a very high quality. Really enjoyed my visit!
A. B.
Fascinating range of exhibits, especially the historical ones. Building is lovely too.
B.
Fantastic free museum in Belfast. Lots to see and learn about. If you’re a fan of Derry Girls they have a special exhibition at the moment at the museum. I believe it’s only there till February 2022.
E. N.
My daughter went to the museum as a treat after Christmas. There was a good exhibition of paintings for sale. There was an exhibition of dresses from "last belle epoque" Absolutely beautiful. The museum has some great exhibits.
K. K.
Great day out. Plenty to see here
J. T.
This Museum is one off the best I have been in . It has got everything from the passed
S. A.
Ideal day out in Belfast city, free to visit.
A. S.
Brilliant museum, free entry and at par with the best in the world in terms of collection. Belfast's history beautifully preserved. A real mummy, precious gems and old armoury, wildlife etc.
A. S.
Excellent museum, well worth a visit. Dinosaur bones etc and some taxidermy should keep the kids entertained. Impressive Game of Thrones Dragons high above reception
s. v.
We had been here with our children and grandchildren during the summer and decided to come back for a more leisurely and intentional visit. And so we did! It was great - so many really interesting exhibits and information. And I have rarely experienced more friendly and helpful staff. We're already planning our next visit as there are new exhibitions coming up soon. Well worth a visit. Thank you to all the staff who made it such a great experience.
A. H.
There is so much to look at, we could easily have spent a whole afternoon here. The musuem is laid out well, it was useful having lines on the floor to direct you about. There are a lot of interactive features which is great, as usually you don't have this in musuems
g. m.
Great compact Museum. Featuring local history and ongoing up to date traveling displays. At the moment there is "A life in drawing- Leonardo da Vinci." also the amazing "Game of Thrones Tapestry." The entry is free and has a cafe and a souvenir shop. We'll worth a visit. You'll want to keep coming back.
R. H.
Educational, informative, and a really nice historical museum. We enjoyed our tour there. There are so many things to see and know about!
Highly recommend!
M. B. K.
Great museum to see. You will surely find something you are interested in. Furthermore, you get a priceless experience for free. Strongly recommended!
a. b.
Fabulous experience and a great selection of everything! Our kids enjoyed it.
G. L.
Very nicely laid out. Each part in bite size pieces. Spent 2.5 hours here. Good Covid measures.
H. S.
Very good museum site in the Britannia park. Lots of information. The cafe is big as well. Staff are lovely. However, the one way system for history route was walking backwards instead of follow the time line. I have spent 3 hours there only managed half of history part. No time to look at the nature and people part at all. If you are interested in history, make sure you give plenty of time.
P. -.
FREE entry to a great museum and gallery. Some fascinating and wonderful exhibits. Covering History Nature Art etc. Includes a section on 'The Troubles' which tries to be balanced and informative. The Botanical Gardens next door also well worth a visit.
F. A.
Little gem in the middle of Belfast.
Big open modernised display rooms.
Good tea room. Botanic park close by and many places to have a chow walking distance.
A. M. M. O.
Just a brilliant place, beautiful, Educational, class for kids & adults. Cafe overlooks the wonderful Botanic Gardens.. to stroll around... 5star quality
H. B.
Excellent space, environs and displays/exhibitions.
C. T.
We had a great time learning some facts on the past and learned a lot of during our visit.
U. D.
Beautiful place, recommended for family
O. S.
I think best museum this area.
S. L.
I go to the Crystal part of the gift shop quite frequently and the staff are always helpful and friendly. Some of the crystals there are: picture jasper, clear quartz, rose quartz's, aragonite, dyed mini geodes, larger natural geodes. All of the crystals seem to be real. I highly recommend this museum in fact I’m going today - Niamh (12)
M. P.
Good museum, high quality Troubles exhibition. Not much focus on Ulster, otherwise, but tons of interesting exhibits nonetheless.
J. S.
A very varied museum. Political/social history, natural history and an art gallery all under one roof. Well worth a visit.
R. W.
Ulster Museum is excellent. Lots to see but not too much. There are some fantastic exhibits and it's layed out so well. One of my favourite museums.
v. r.
Good place with plenty of information...best option for a picnic with family with kids
S. M.
Just love it and all for free, only issue was no food other than buns in the cafe at the end which was a disappointment but hey there are plenty of places around it to go.
B. o.
Fantastic place 2hrs well spent walking around learning about lots of interesting different things. Top marks, wonderful building also.
R. G.
It's very interesting and free so worth taking the kids for a couple of hours. Has a coffee shop and shop on the ground floor too
J. B.
Excellent. Definitely worth your time. 3 different routes to follow around the museum, Art, History and Nature
T. A. P.
Absolutely fantastic, friendly staff.. wonderful exhibits.. suitable for all ages and interests
P. S.
Two hours not nearly enough to see everything that this museum offers. Fantastic experience! Very friendly staff.
S. P.
An interesting and absorbing museum. Not too big so can be done in a day, even an afternoon if you're quick. Free to enter.
P. a.
You cant beat the staff. They get angry if you do.
Good to see the place back to life, what with all its dinosaurs and fossilized creature's. Did you know bogbutter was a thing? 🤢
B. C.
I love this place, my daughter loves it as well and most Sundays we come here for a walk around the exhibits and a snack in the cafe. The Ravine is open again now after COVID but the Glass House is still closed.
S. K.
Had a fantastic day. There is plenty to see here. Everyone was fascinated from the very young to the very old.
M. V.
Nice place . Just not fully opened.
Available free of charge.
Very friendly staff.
s. l.
Excellent day out for yourself or with a family. Cafe, shop.
M. D.
Great day out with kids, plenty to see and do for them. The staff were very friendly and helpful, all for no charge.
I. M.
I tried to book online but no tickets available. We arrived and had to wait about 10 mins to gain access. Staff very friendly and exhibition was great.
M. B.
Excellent Florence Nightingale Exhibition. Lovely meal in the Cafe. Delighted it is open again. One of my favourite places. Even got a photo of Prince Charles. The day after while out for my walk.
V. H.
Well varied exhibitions! We especially appreciated the art gallery number 1, the exhibition on gems as well as on Game of Thrones. Had a wonderful time and were impressed with the activity program offered for kids! Great job!
K. S.
If you are in Belfast visiting here is a must. It has been set up so that it’s safe and still enjoyable. The exhibit they have on the troubles was excellent and look at it through both sides eyes.
A. H.
Spent a lovely couple of hours wondering around the museum with my elderly parents. Staff were extremely friendly and very informative, from reception at the beginning of our visit through to the shop and exit at the end. The staff were very attentive especially to my parents and offered them chairs to rest on and easier access routes. My parents thoroughly enjoyed their visit and would like me to mention Keith in particular. Thank you for helping to make it an enjoyable day.

Fantastic but very busy. Felt very sorry for the 2 people working the cafe, they were certainly doing their best.
V. L.
The entry is free and the exhibition is great. My kids like the dinosaurs and I like the willow of thrones, after all , I am a big fan of Game of Thrones. So I took lots of pictures with the thrones.
R. L.
GOT inspired sculptures made my day but my wee nephew wanted dinosaurs and nothing else lol always a pleasure to go to the Ulster museum.....
A. S.
A surprising breadth and depth of items on display. Plus they serve an award winning sausage roll.
S. M.
Fantastic museum, enjoyed by all the family. You could spend days here.
M. L.
Full of so much history over 3 floors much bigger than I thought. Lots of very friendly staff on hand 2 help
F. c.
Great museum. Wasn't much a fan of the art exhibition that was on, but enjoyed the rest of the museum.
B. C.
Nice tour, small museum but nice architecture structure. I especially enjoy the game of throne display.
J. A.
Great museum with lots to do for all ages. Loved the art exhibits!
R. B.
Lovely cafe and great exhibits. Well worth a visit
s. M.
It was my younger sons first time there an there was different things to see an very interesting 🙂🙂🙂
T. R.
Is amazing and even one needs to visit it great day out with grandkids we all loved it
E. M.
Haven't been in a long time. Fantastic experience but feel I only scratched the surface..Will be back!
M. T.
My husband and I spent a great afternoon in the museum. Hadn't been for 30 years and it was very good.
C. W.
A good place to go to learn about Ulster. I went primarily to see the modern history gallery, which was a great exhibition. The rest of the museum was nice to see as well. It's fairly small so not a lot of time is needed to see everything (it took me an hour to walk through every room, occasionally stopping to read a plaquard).
G. K.
Great but if your worried about Covid forget it ,no masks even amongst some of the staff despite notices requesting that they be worn.
J. B.
Great collection, well arranged/structured and easy to follow, I spent ~3hours here and enjoyed it. My most preferred section was The Elements room.
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Highly recommend!
The only reason I rated it 4 stars is that some visitors leave their children running around and being quite noisy, disturbing the other visitors that are really interested in the exhibitions.
E. O.
So much to see with interactive features and in-depth descriptions of the artefacts. Also has a nice gift shop
C. G.
Very informative. Only had time for a short visit.
Café was also good.
s.
Interesting museum. 5 very different areas, good walk flow design
N. M.
This is a very interesting places to visit. It is very well presented telling many things about our past. Even if you are not from here there is a lot to learn about Ulster. I very much recommend people from here and visitors to Northern Ireland to go and spend some time at the Ulster Museum. They will not be disappointed.
B. B. l.
Love the museum! We went to see an exhibition called faces and places, with some nice photos of old Belfast and new photos of interesting people! My partner was very pleased with his picture :)
P. W.
As good a provincial museum as I've seen. Fine collections across art, geology, history, etc. attractively displayed for visual feasting or more considered education. Engaging temporary exhibitions. All with friendly, practical staff on hand. Thanks...oh, and good covid measures too!
J. H. C.
Museum limiting guest entering to avoid being overwhelmed definitely a great idea. During the hour and 30 minutes there, it wasn't too busy and felt safe walking around. Everyone wearing mask and keeping a safe distance.
Museum contains many different information about Ireland history, and many other things! Had a great time here walking through and learning with friends.
A. T.
Not only Irish history here, Art, Science and so much more. A museum that has so much to see over many levels and it's FREE. Though please make a donation as it really is worth a visit. Expect to spend a good few hours here if you are reading in-depth, though to wander around and see what is important to you, when you exit you'll want to come back for more. Maybe not enough seats to sometimes rest your legs when walking around, but possibly due to Covid.
Booking is on-line, though two of us mid morning, called in randomly and found there are a few spaces available sometimes on the day.
M. C.
Very interesting, something for everyone!!
R. M.
I confess that I was never a museum fan, but that changed on the day I met this place. I loved it! I point it all out!
N. P.
This place is always worth a visit with great permanent and temporary exhibits
S. H.
We visited Ulster museum yesterday on our last day of holiday. Unfortunately we didn’t have a lot of time trying to fit so much into the day, but WOW what an interesting place. So very well laid out and done in easy to follow routes around. We especially enjoyed the history section , but didn’t have time to do every trail. We bought couple of penguins in the shop for our g grandchildren and enjoyed cold drinks in the cafe All staff so helpful and informative especially gentleman by the door called Pat.
L. W.
Helpful staff , well laid out interesting exhibits. Truly a place worth a visit in Belfast. Great access for walking impaired.
A. G.
Needs improvement but potentially a magnificent place to come for education and history....recommended

Game of Thrones Tapestry
I was a big fan of the Bayeux Tapestry and when I heard about this even bigger tapestry I had to see it. And wow is it big, it just keep going, unlike the Bayeux you are able to get really close. So close you can see each and every individual stitch. I spoke to the embroiders who were stitching the detail for episode 1 - I believe they have used gold & silver threads. There is even a cool projector showing you what they are weaving that week!
I’m not a big GOT fan but that didn't matter I couldn't get over the detail and the craftsmanship, the more time I took the more I spotted, they even allow you to take photos (that wasn't the case in Bayeux). I did see one funny guy who knew every scene and insisted showing his friend on his phone.
I'm not sure how long it's going to be up for at the Ulster Museum but it's well worth a visit, what a great piece of art, one to go down in history I’d say. A big 10/10 for me
A. W.
Great tourism spot... Free admission and it is quiet and has a lot of Irish history (especially about the Troubles) that goes back to the Iron age. Fascinating! Plus they have an Egyptian mummy. Amazing and kid friendly. There is a little Cafe on the first floor with food and coffee, etc.
M. T.
Brilliant. Absolutely loved it. A day is not long enough, very interesting and educational.
N. Y.
Brilliant mix of local history, nature exhibits and art. Very accessible building, however it looks a bit daunting if you do have access issues, as it's on different levels. The lifts are not all immediately obvious and there are many stairs. Completely free but easy to book the necessary ticket, I did it while walking to the Museum. Great staff, very knowledgeable, not sure if volunteers but took the time to show items.
One showed me the maquette of The Dying Cùchulainn, depicted in the 2 huge murals by the entrance on the ground floor. Wonderful to visit the Botanic Gardens next to the Museum, especially after having to wear a face mask! Keep on doing what you're doing.
T. B.
Beautiful Botanic Garden to experience outside and very informative and diverse Museum inside.
T. 7.
This is one attraction that is well worth seeing. The whole history of how Northern Ireland evolved as a country and more. Great exhibits and plenty of text explaining what happened, why it happened and when it happened. Gets busy at the weekend and when cruise ships are in port visiting.
V. I.
What a great place. Clean, spacious and something for everyone and its free!! Fantastic

We as a family of 5 had a lovely pre Christmas day out at the museum. We particularly enjoyed the art exhibition.
G. G.
Very interesting visit really enjoyed it. We would recommend booking before you go.
S. N. (. a. W.
Great day our for the family. Modern, clean, well lit, great displays, fantastic art gallery and much more
S. P.
Comprehensive museum which provides interesting exhibits covering the history of Ireland from the Stone Ages to the Game of Thrones.
Numbers are limited and it is best to book ahead for admission, unless you come very early or late. Best of all it remains free.
T. J. O.
Informative place. Lots of artifacts collections. Loved it.!
Á. D.
Very good layout of items. A lot to see. You could easily spend a full day here.
L. C.
Lovely day out
You can go to the museum for a free day out or you can leave a donation
Lots of offer a very clean modern area
The staff were amazing and any that we came across were very informative
We went with a young child and she had a great day.
You can attend a little kids workshop but we misses out as it closes for lunch so just make sure not to miss out
We found the only problem with thw museum was getting around with a pram due to the location of the lifts, aside from this no problems.
J. L.
Interesting all round.
v. r.
Very good one day trip. Kids will enjoy.
L. M.
The Ulster Museum is an amazing place to visit. All the exhibition zones are wonderful but especially at the moment the display of Weeping Poppies and The Game of Thrones tapestry. Could not bieve the length of it and the work involved. Would thoroughly recommend a visit. It is free but donations are welcome.
S. T. d.
Very good layout and outstanding from education viewpoint.
Shame about the disproportionate covid guidelines and unnecessary queues with no scientific justification ironically !
R. D.
Love the place we'll presented very nice and polite member of staff, happy to help with the smile.
Very clear to follow the direction its colour code. Lovely place to spend the afternoon read the history from trouble in Northern Ireland to ice age to now.

Brilliant and free family day out if you bring a picnic with you
M. C.
Always a fabulous experience at the Ulster Museum, for all generations. Brilliant Troubles exhibition at the moment, on top of all the enthralling exhibits as ever, including the Egyptian mummy, dinosaurs and wildlife. A must see for anyone visiting Belfast.
T. M.
A well organised route through the museum., allowed us to see the exhibits at a leisurely pace. We felt safe and comfortable due to social distancing restrictions, enjoyed a light lunch from a varied menu and purchased a gift from the shop of a local designer
A. K.
Museum itself is a wonderful resource but today there were too many very excited children running about so it was hard to concentrate on the exhibits. A visit during term time would be a lot more enjoyable.
W. H.
On par with the Natural History Museum, so glad we made the decision to visit
H.
A beautiful museum. So much to learn.
B. D.
I arrived tired and with sore feet and had to be chased out. Eclectic and interesting. Only downside for me was the one-way system took you backwards in time not forwards. Nice cafe, leaf tea, coffee possibly a bit bitter, but otherwise good espresso. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
c. g.
Spent 4 hours here today with 3 kids! They loved it. Thoroughly enjoyable day!
B. M. N.
Loved this museum. Great day out with the kids
M. O.
This is just beside Queens university and the botanic Gardens. It's easy to get to by bus or a 20 min walk from the city center. We enjoyed our visit. It's exhibits are varied, from the troubles to meteors, fossil's to the Spanish Armada.
Their florescent rock collection is quite the thing to see under uv light.
There are examples of glass works and dinosaur's.
Fun for all ages.
J. m.
Anyone looking to book somewhere for a special evening event should consider the Ulster Museum, the setting, plus the arrangement of tables exceded expectations, the planning of menu and the execution of the service by yellow door was spectacular, I usually am a photograph the meal dishes kind of person, but I was enticed into eating right away and enjoying too much to even consider stopping, we had a little wait between main and dessert due to speeches, ballot draws etc, so I was able to get a couple of shots. I must add that I am type1 diabetic and was taken by manager of yellow door, to meet the chef and discuss any special requirements or concerns I might have, top service, as for points would give more that 5stars if I could.
M. M. H.
Great museum with plenty to see. Although the restaurant and coffee shop are a bit overpriced!!
R. J.
I Couldn't enter in the Museum it was already closed. But i liked the exterior architecture. It was close to botanic garden.
D. P.
Very good place. I recommend! The kids will love it as well.
C.
Amazing museum, you can followe history from the start of life all the way to the irish troubles and more. Very easy to follow and easy to understand everything
J. L.
Great free museum with regular art exhibitions
H. B.
Very well done. Good history exits, and very helpful to understand the various sides and pressures on political andsocial events.
S. S.
Nice way to put in an afternoon. Exhibits have been updated and there seems to be more to look at.
D. M.
Great spot, lots to see and plenty for little ones. Probably even more to see if you're not accompanied by little ones and worried they might put a hand on something very old and expensive
M. S.
Fantastic display! Entertaining and enlightening! Fun for lil ones, too! Dragons, mummies, spiders! Wow!
S. A.
Worth it for the art on show
Came here during a recent visit to Belfast. We had to wait 30 minutes due to ticketing restrictions due to COVID, (our own lack of planning ), once in there is a broad range of information and artefacts to look at. There is an interesting exhibition area devoted to “the troubles” v interesting however we would have benefited more visiting after our TaxiTour of the murals. The art was fantastic especially the Bridget Reilly painting! In addition they had a Royal Ulster Academy of Arts exhibit which showcase artworks by new and established artists. The museum is free yet so captivating.
M. O.
Brilliant! Much bigger than we thought it would be! The kids learned so much its a great place! Cafe is good too! All the staff were so welcoming and friendly especially the security guard he was so nice!
B. H.
It is the best museum I've ever seen . I liked Ulster museum .

I am not normally a massive museum fan but this was really interesting and definitely worth doing when in Belfast - along with the Botanical gardens. Staff were super friendly.
J. T.
Very enjoyable experience, 'The Troubles' and 'The Armada' exhibitions in particular were thought provoking and interesting. I cannot speak highly enough of the people who work there; polite, kind and informative, thank you so much for such an enjoyable day in The Ulster Museum.
A. O.
Very interesting museum, all sorts to look at and learn about. Free entrance too
R. R.
I was expecting to see more artifacts and exhibits displayed in chronological order, however they have a nice collection of uniforms and dresses. It is a good place in which you can find general information about Northern Ireland and Belfast.
D. C.
Great day out,, loads to see , nice lunch available too
A. N.
One of the best museums here and its absolutely free.
It has a lot of interesting items like T-rex skeleton, rare minerals from asteroids and lot more interesting artifacts.
B. M.
Lovely museum nice place to visit
P. K.
Lovely day out, so much see and do
N. F.
We went to the museum for the first time since Covid, and we were organised and booked tickets, showed up on time and queued in the rain. What we didn't realise was that 80% of the people in the queue had no idea that they had to book now... C'mon people! 🤦🏼Fortunately the museum staff were very switched on, came out in the pouring rain to ask if anyone had tickets, and we were taken in and processed very quickly. There are hand sanitisating stations everywhere, and they ask that you wear a mask. The little rooms where the kids can handle stuff are closed, and there are routes laid out on the floors to get you around. The museum was as interesting as it always is, the staff were fantastic, my only concern is that people were not respecting mask wearing, one way systems, or personal space. So if you are still a little nervous about groups of people, then that's something to consider. On a personal taste issue, I missed seeing the older art, and wasn't that impressed with the exhibition on at the moment, it was not my sort of thing. But I'm sure there are many fans of Willie Doherty.
F. M.
Well worth a visit ......fabulous building/exhibits/ ...likewise staff .....helpful/welcoming and informative
N. O.
Wonderful Museum, highly recommend the GOT tapestry whilst it's still available to see
K. S.

R. M.
Great day out for the family.. its also free all year round.

Museum and its staff were excellent. Easy to navigate floorline system and very enjoyable displays. Unfortunately cafe staff were less than friendly, however it didnt overshadow an overall excellent visit
X. B.
Fantastic gift shop
N. M.
Lovely museum. Plenty of exhibits but not overwhelming for children. Parking facilities aren't great and unfortunately there was no art exhibition when we went
K. B.
Loved Tissot's Mysterious Irish Muse. Colin Davidsons Silent Testimony should be mandatory viewing for all secondary school children
P.
It's a beautiful museum which is free, always a plus, it's a beautiful building inside and out and definitely worth a visit if in the south of the city of Belfast, just a great variety of things to see and do, and a lovely cafe overlooking botanic gardens. And of course the ancient Egyptian mummy a must see, Spanish Armada section with old coins things like that. Pre Ireland things, the troubles section , with actual army robot that was used during the troubles. The top level has beautiful paintings, not sure what else to say, old styled clothing section, all well laid out and organised. Please visit if in the city. A volcanic rock section ie types of stones and crystals, and some stuffed animals if that's your call thing. A old car, don't know my cats alas..
C. B.
Lovely calm warm place to go to in the middle of a rainy Sunday

S. C.
We took 4 children, aged between 12 and 4 and they all enjoyed themselves so much! Some things weren't open due to covid, which would have made it more interactive for them, but they still had a great time, and the 3 adults enjoyed themselves too!!

''The trouble'' show is currently closed. Will return in spring 2018
D. K.
Really great, loved it. So informative and really well laid out, lots to see and learn a real good day out. Forget about the cafe as an option, not a great option food wise.
S. R.
If in Belfast you must go to The Ulster Museum. Plenty to do and see. Plenty of interactive areas for kids. Also try the cafe food really good.

This is a fantastic Museum. So much to see you could spend an entire day wandering round. Beautifully laid out which means it never really feels crowded even when there are hundreds of visitors attending at the same time. The shop is amazing and is packed with beautiful gifts to suit everyone. Admission is free and the staff are friendly and helpful.
C. M.
Great day out for the family. Could spend all day in here

Excellent museum, covering art, history, and natural history. Free admission but at present they still request that you book admission in advance, presumably for COVID reasons.

Really nice musuem with art, history and nature elements. Free to visit. Closed on Monday, open all other days. The museum is situated in the botanic gardens, also nice to visit! I spend about 1.5 hour admiring the exhibition's. There are also several discovery centers with a strong focus on smaller children and activities to do like drawing or experiments.

Varied museum with free access, suggested donation of £5 on exit.
Interesting exhibitions but not the most logical layout. I think we ended up walking through some if it in reverse.
Definitely recommended to visit. We had time to kill on a rainy day and glad we stopped off here.
M. C. (.
Interesting museum. Broad focus not just on Belfast. A free good way to spend a few hours whilst in the city.

Easily one of the best museums I've been to (Read full verdict below)
The Ulster Museum I've been to more than any other museum, and for good reasons. In terms of value, it's absolutely fantastic. Not only is the museum free, it has great exhibits, friendly staff, the Botanic Gardens, a great location excellent for a picnic, well cleaned & maintained and a constant shift in things being displayed. As a result, it never feels stale. It's easily the best value potentially in Northern Ireland.
The only downside (and it's an odd one) is that the Graveyard outside is in a poor state, which is odd given the excellent maintenance the museum has. And maybe the cafe is overpriced a bit. Other than those, this museum is perfection.
It should be law that you have to visit this place a couple of times year.
P. D.
Lots of great things to see. A pity out stay was so short.
A. S.
Must visit museum... Gives us an idea about the universe, planets, living things, elements, ice age, stone age, civilization and war... Great experience.
A. K.
Fantastic service throughout, from the busy Cafe to the shop and the displays, especially those that involve children in a fantastic and artistic way. Beautiful displays although i do miss some of the older paintings that have been replaced i thoroughly enjoy a day trip here, learning more and more on every visit.
F. S.
Need to go again, so much to see.
J. T.
Excellent museum much bigger than I expected and it is free. Though I don't understand why they don't have a small entrance fee like a pound or two.
c. l.
Fascinating place good for wandering around
H. P. (.
One of the Best place to visit if you are in Belfast.
C. V.
Excellent museum with so much to see and do.
M. C.
This museum is fantastic, staff are helpful and pleasant. Well worth another visit.
L. P.
Recently had a visit here, first time from the upgrade a few years ago (if I'm not mistaken) was lovely to have a walk around the building and see the magnificent art and history. The staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. It was a Friday afternoon and not too busy, was not pushed to go through the exhibitions at any other pase but my own. It was nice and I would recommend it.
C. N.
Lovely place but once you've been a few times, it can be quite boring. Hard to get the pram around
T. C.
I cannot count the number of times I’ve been to the Ulster Museum over the years and each and every time I go I am rarely disappointed. My son Logan loves going here and particularly likes the art galleries etc...I like the jewellery, crystals and space themed stuff!
M. K.
A place to know more about Northern Ireland history especially in medieval time and 1970s political trauma . Awesome and great place to spend time with family
G. G. K.
Excellent museum, very nice staff, a lot of very interesting things are displayed and it’s free admission. Your thirst for culture can easily be quenched here.
I’ll be coming back, for sure.
I highly recommend it!
t. h.
Fantastic place for a family visit, interesting and informative with new exhibits every few weeks. Well worth a couple of hours of an afternoon.
G. S.
Extensive collection over 5 floors with a varied interest range from prehistoric to modern art 🎨
A. R.
Nice but small art collection. Also enjoyable was the history of Northern Ireland exhibit.
R. B.
Because the museum is free, I think that makes up for a lot of the stuff in there. Some of the exhibits aren't as exciting as others. The history can be interesting, especially the section about the troubles. Other things like the fine arts section wasn't as interesting. Definitely worth a visit (it's free, why not!)
D. M.
A fine museum in the centre of Belfast currently hosting Dippy the Diplodocus!
M. C.
We have come to see the poppies on tour. Not disappointed, its beautiful. Of course can't resist a quick pop in to the museum, great coffee shop and the kids pack really involves the children who can't wait to tick off all the boxes with their findings. Another great visit and a bonus with the poppies.
M. S.
Well worth a visit, something for all ages. Hadn't visited for a while although was a frequent visitor when children young(dinosaurs/Egyptian), history, fashion and art when teenagers and now it's usually exhibitions that draws us back. While the Rembrandt etchings was the reason for this visit, it was a pleasure to walk past revisiting and perusing the offerings from Irish artists on the 5th floor. Recommend it to those who like rural paintings. Intend to return for the Florence Nightingale exhibition shortly. Hadn't time to revisit old favourites or the cafe and shop. To end the adult child entreaties committed to another visit before December.

Lovely place to spend a good few hours if you're around Belfast.

Excellent museum covering history, fashion, decorative arts and much much more.
Great cafe and gift shop.

Had some time to pass so I took a walk around the gardens outside of the ulster museum . Very relaxing too

It's a nice little museum, definitely worth a visit (if you like museums of course). The fact that it's small is great, because you get to see everything and it doesn't take up too much time. They have interesting things to see and it's free to visit.
S. M.
Love going to this place. Have been going since I was a kid and I always spend hours at the exhibits
J. C.
Nice museum with a large portion dedicated to the history of Ireland/Northern Ireland. From ancient human and natural history to a nice and seemingly unbiased exhibit explaining the troubles, this is a good free tourist attraction for tourists (or even locals!).
w.
Interesting museum with plenty of things to see. The wide range of topics covered makes it a great first impression of different subjects for kids. And, it's free of charge, but it does rely on donations from the public.

Probably one of the best museums I have visited in recent years: fascinating collections, well planned and so immersive: whether you're into science, nature, history (one floor for each) or art (two floors), you will definitely find something for yourself there. Your kids will love it too. Please secure good few hours if you want to see all the exhibitions: I think I've spent over 3 hours there and had to miss the whole history section (bummer!) as I ran out of time. Will definitely be coming back though.

Very good for family trip!

Firstly, visit to see the Game of Thrones tapestry it IS TRULY fantastically done. Tells the whole story of GOT series' and it so well made. Was speechless.
Its a big, well laid out museum with everything you could ask for but in the right amounts. From history of the troubles to the animal kingdom to a fantastic selection of art.

Needs a full morning or a day to give it justice

Good place

Great place for a family day out lots to enjoy and see
R. A.
Absolutely brilliant free museum. I particularly enjoyed the art sections. And a couple of very nice ladies at the desk of the 2019 exhibition. I spent about 3 hours here when I usually get bored after an hour in a museum.
M. D.
Excellent place , Dippy the dinosaur was amazing to see the children loved it. It's brilliant to see such an amazing peace of history in Northern Ireland . The whole place is brilliant an free entry is very good. Highly recommended for any one on a day out in Belfast.
J. B.
Awesome for a rainy day activity filled with history dating back over 200 years ago. Perfect for any age group. Took my kids there and they loved it so much they begged me to take them again!
J. C.
Fantastically eclectic exhibits in a cool building leading visitors through art, history and science. Kids well catered for in the experience rooms. Moving exhibition about the troubles. Great physics and materials displays.
Set near to the botanical gardens, it's worth a visit. Free entry - even to the showcase exhibits
J. T.
A brilliant museum, I've taken many friends there and they were all amazed at the experience.
K. D.
Amazing place, would highly recommend to everyone
H.
Incredible, donation-based museum with 5 floors of exhibitions covering every topic- art, science, world and local history, geology, pop culture, music...amazing. I especially loved the Game of Thrones tapestry and woven dragons.

Fantastic day out. Kids loved it. Staff lovely and helpful. Always a treat comung here.
J. M.
Fantastic venue to explore at your leisure. Don't expect to get round in an hour, give yourself several to do justice to the many different exhibitions and curiosities. A brilliant day out for anyone, old and young.
b. c.
Great exhibitions and very child friendly. A place to make wonderful memories
L. M.
Great day out with the kids, lots to see. It's free aswell, I didn't think to book but you can because of covid.
P. B. (.
Really good, coping with the restrictions very well. You can just turn up and q to get in. We went at 11.30 and only waited 5 minutes to get in.
M. v. B.
Big museum with a lot of different things to see. A lot about natural history, with information, videos, and real fossils and minerals. There was also an area about the elements, and the representation of the periodic table was very satisfying. I visited for approximately 1½ hours, but I skipped the upper 2 floors, which were about Arts.
c. p.
The artwork was great, and they have some hood temporary exhibitions, that I was surprised to see were all still free. Lots of good events on. I was slightly disappointed with the history section of the museum, as its so non descriptive, particular the section about the troubles. But the museum does state that the troubles are a difficult part of history to cover when people have such strong views on it
M. B. W.
At first, it's tough to get through if you know any history if Ireland in general. However, with that being said the rest of the museum was just simply Incredible!
B. H. (.
Amazing museum...very modern. Quite a mixed bag of items on show
J. M.
The Ulster museum is the best museum for kids I've seen. Flying dragons, interactive exhibits and educational puzzles all add to the fun. The Museum is free and well worth a visit, as are the surrounding botanic gardens.
B. M.
Amazing place! Good to spend 2 quality hours
r.
Love this place , never disappoints, I like to take the grandchildren during the summer enjoy the museum and botanical gardens as well as the newly renovated palm house
And with the weather being so good enjoying an ice cream in the beautiful gardens filled with tourists and locals enjoying themselves . And the fact it's a free day out just a donation if you wish (no pressure)
Bring a picnic as the cafe is a bit over priced if you have kids could end up very expensive.
C. W.
Really interesting. We spent a couple of hours there and weren't close to getting through. Totally captivated by the mummy!
S.
Class experience will be back
S. R.
History, nature and art all in one. Very large and well kept museum
A. M.
Visited this museum with the family. As soon as you walk in the front door there is a big money pot asking for a donation, this is because it is free admission. Please put what you can in the pot because believe me you will not be disappointed. There is loads to see and it is very rare these days to come across a museum like this which is free of charge. We absolutely loved and you will too.
S. R.
Brilliant well worth a visit, cafe is fantastic and the shop has a beautiful selection of locally make things.
N. A.
Excellent museum with a broad range of exhibits and a great gift shop and super cafe. Free admission.
c. b.
Always worth a visit. The exhibition of Willie Doherty thought provoking. Fantastic yet depressing all at the same time.
Z. S.
Really loved it, will be coming back as we really really got tired because there are a lot of exhibitions and that means our brain went overdrive with all the new informations it took in.. Haha.. But we definitely had fun there! Loved the art studio for the kids and the kids at heart. 😊
A. V.
Outstanding museum. Lots of well documented history. Egyptian mummy was a great bonus. Mostly appreciated the modern technology exhibition and mineral room. So glad I made it here. There's also a lovely botanical garden just 2 minutes walk from here.
D. W.
Very good museum and art collection. Nice cafe.
P. H.
Good family day out and it's free!
m.
Yeah it's a fantastic museum. The reason it lost a star, was the restaurant was too expensive. But if your into interactive exhibits for the kids and lots of art galleries, history and a great photographic exhibition on the recent period known as 'The Troubles' then this place is the place to go. FREE or by Donation. Couldn't recommend a better place in Belfast.
E. M.
There is a one way system place due to Covid. However we found this helped navigate the exhibits which were excellent!! I would recommend a visit especially on a wet day and the admission is free!
S. B.
It's good place to go with kids. There are so many things to enjoy like history, nature, crafts and so on.
J. G.
An amazing museum, great collection of historical artefacts with highly accessible descriptions for items, definitely worth a visit!
S. F.
An excellent museum and well worth a visit if you’re in Belfast - it’s in a great location adjacent to botanic gardens too so you could make a day of it. Also the museum is free entry with the option to make a donation. The art work displayed recently was fantastic!
M. D.
Great free and very interesting museum. And lovely food from the cafe.
G. B.
It is great for all ages! Very interactive, looks of exhibitions that allow you to touch parts of history. The glowing stones in the element section is memorising! Really enjoyable and it's free!
M. J.
Great museum, exhibits that cover all different areas (art, history, nature). Entrance is by donation. We only got through about half of the museum, there is a lot to see and we would definitely come back on a different visit!
N. B.
Lots to see and all for free. Really enjoyed my stay. Big thanks to the team making this possible. And a special thanks to the staff for taking their time to explain me a little more about Ireland's history.
c. M.
Always worth a visit, plenty to see.
R. C.
One of my all time favourite museums. It’s newly refurbished Troubles gallery is brave and does the topic justice. Highly recommend this museum to all I meet. Love the Game of Thrones Tapestry
S. W.
Great place to put in a few hours with the kids on a rainy day. Free entry, plenty to see and do.
A. K.
Absolutely loved this museum. I spent the day here learning the history and loved every minute spent. I would recommend this museum to anyone that visits the area. There is a delightful cafe in the museum as well.
h. s.
Pleasant afternoon wandering around the various exhibits, very much enjoyed it
D. M.
Great museum varied exhibitions. Serves good food
m. p.
Fantastic day out. One way system in place a bit of a pain as you kinda go into exhibits in reverse chronological order but fully understand reasons why it is in place. Definitely worth a visit.

Great experience, a lot to see
G. I.
A Fantastical jewel 💎 of knowledge & treasures.
Very visually displayed ranging from gems of intellectual knowledge, thought provoking created pieces of visual science & art materials, well preserved & positioned & displayed artefacts including creatures less common.
Including geological & botanical wonders to fascinate & ignite the imagination, also a great deal of historical information.
Something for everyone to enjoy from ice age to space age with good facilities.
All in all for size of the building probably one of the most intellectually thought out in regards of inspirational awakening towards history art & science that has been cleverly visually presented mixed with modern technology.
Without a doubt one of the most enjoyable museums I have viewed & quite definitely worthy of numerous visits.
M. J.
An excellent place which encompasses many aspects of history from geology to art. Science and technology are represented equally with a very diverse exhibition.
I've lived in NI all my life and only recently visited here. Definitely a good visit.
a.
I recall going here with the entire family. There are interesting items and knowledge to hold children's attention. An amazing museum to go to, it holds the themes to all sorts of topics and never ceases surprise a younger brother or sister.
K. M.
Its a very good museum steeped in history, the art gallery is especially interesting.
R. C.
The largest museum in Northern Ireland located in the Botanic Gardens in Belfast.
Includes 3 floors featuring collections of fine art, applied art, archaeology, treasures from the Spanish Armada, local history, botany, zoology and geology. A very educational experience. I especially found the material from the 'Troubles' era very compelling.
This amazing museum is free of charge.
Anyone can make a monetary donation,
but with no pressure...strictly voluntary.
I gladly donated and my overall experience was stellar. Very nice staff as well.
D. K.
A surprisingly cool, modern, renovation completely transformed the museum into an airy, vast space for exploring and learning.
Staff are helpful, and friends from afar were impressed with it. Being located in the Botanic area means you can walk round the gardens afterwards or hang out in the nearby Botanic Road area too which would round out a good day at the museum
A. M.
The Ulster museum is one of the best places in Belfast to spend an afternoon. The elements exhibit on the second floor is a particular highlight. There are three rooms, discover history, discover nature and discover art, which have friendly staff there to teach kids (and adults!) about their topics. The staff are all incredibly helpful and entrance is always free (though there are occasionally paid exhibitions).
A. D.
There are many interesting information... and beautiful pieces... a lot of them to touch it.

Best thing we did in Belfast....
F. E.
Kids enjoyed the marine section &, dinosaurs very easy to get around staff very helpful we'll be back
E. K. E.
A very well laid out and very extensive museum. Covering the history of the area from the earliest day and to the present. Also an exhibition of a mummy, dinosaur skeletons, extinct animals and a lot more. Use a day or more here. Situated in the botanical gardens, which also deserves a visit.
C.
Really cool museum. Learned a lot about the history of Northern Ireland, which is what I was looking for. There is also a floor for nature and art.
There was a minor problem though: the right way to visit the history floor is not well indicated so I started with the 19th century and finished with the stone age. But apart from that, it's worth visiting (and it's free!)
P. H.
Wide variety of exhibits and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Spacious and interesting layout results in a relaxed tour with varied viewpoints on some of the exhibits.
D. P.
Located in the park around the Belfast Botanical Gardens. Lovely area, and very convenient if you want to spend the afternoon, visit the museum then hang out in the gardens. There's a cafe in front of the museum also, if a cup of tea is your cup of tea.
Has an updated and quirky layout. Lots of stairs and walkways taking you up and down uneven levels. Can be unsure where to go next.
Free admission with a suggested donation which is always great. Lots of local history here, and well worth spending a few hours in.
H. F.
Great exhibits. I went, thinking I'd spend 20 min but was finally ushered politely out a few minutes after closing! Was most enraptured by The Troubles, exhibit of Belfast's & Nor. Ire.'s sad socio-political street wars. The triceratops, narwhal horn, & huge wolfhound, & others were amazing too.
N. B.
Never disappoints, took my grandson (5) he loved it, I would advise pre booking on their site.
P. K.
Enjoyed it a lot. Free but lot of specimens. Very friendly staff. Must go place to see in belfast
C. E.
Great museum with a diverse range of exhibits. It's got an Egyptian mummy. Dippy on tour until early January 2019. Good for kids to explore. Closed Monday.
B. S.
Very interesting displays about the troubles and other Northern Irish history. Leave two hours to see everything.
