Reviews of The Shire Country Park
Lovely walk, great for strolls, kids cycling and observing nature. It's very tranquil with the sound of water as you walk along maintained footpaths which flat, and don't get muddy. Paths are ideal for wheelchair users. Although the car park is paved with rough gravel. Will definitely go again, especially when autumn sets in and trees turn to lovely shades of reds and brown.
This is a great local nature escape from the bust streets of Birmingham.
It was a god send during the lockdown. We saw Herons, ducks, swans and many different kinds of birds.
Lovley place. Childhood memories of yester years.
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
Lovely park, beautiful place to go for a walk and ride your bike.
Lots of lovely flowers and trees to see.
A long stretch of parks spanning several boroughs. If you're into trekking and / or cycling, I highly recommend including it in you routes.
Beautiful bird song, lullaby of river water meandering along, lovely green space full of spring flowers & buds, currently being dessimated by a mixture of tree coppicing and lazy visitor's trash tossed indiscriminately along walkways
Beautiful place and the kids loved it. It's interesting to see what Mr.Tolkien had in mind when visiting this place and even more brilliant and beautiful than I could have imagined
Loveley walk if started from one side to the other can take a hour or two, very quiet and pretty
This is a very beautiful place situated right by the River Cole. It runs all the way along the river to Sarehole Mill. It's called the Shire as J R Tolkien spent time living in the nearby area and got inspiration for his Lord Of The Rings books here. Every year they hold a Tolkien Weekend near Sarehole Mill.where there are related activities etc. People dress put twigs and leaves in their hair and dress up. There are lots of birds and butterflies in the right seasons and a Heron. I have seen Kingfishers too. Sometimes I just can't believe just how beautiful the walk from the Shire to the Mill is. The Mill itself is a tourist attraction and has a large and beautiful Mill Pond. I believe the Mill still works you can buy flour made there. As you walk towards the Mill one could still believe you were still in the 1800s and I always liken the vista to the old painting 'February Fill Dyke". The area is served by a Public Space Protection Act.
nice park in the middle of a very built up area - maintained by the council for the most part too... it follows the River Cole and in 2005 Birmingham Council actually renamed it 'Shire County Park' in honour of J.R.R. Tolkien...
Lots of litter, the trees and bushes have not been trimmed. Not suitable to visit alone, doesn't feel safe.
Beautiful place next to sarehole mills museum, walk next to river and can cross the river with jumping on set rocks. Good for taking your dog as well and it nice for cycling but it ji ust a short one.
Nice walk. Can walk really far
Great place to visit , nice day out for the family
Nice little park
Soooooo nice and beauty of nature really like it , you should go there
Has a working Ford, what more can you ask for!
Great 4 my dog had a good couple of hours
The park was great but the cafe was closed ☹️and we didn't take anything to eat,and there isn't any restaurants close by.it's better to check before hand
Great place to walk, but spoilt by people who drop litter
amazing local walk for all ages, safe and clean
Not bad if you want to not see people and have a good moment this is the right park, not recommended to be there late night
Tolkiens inspiration for Lord of the rings. Absolutely my favourite place for a walk. Stunning natural beauty with rivers, stepping stones and winding pathways.
Whole different world in here!
Great day out and having fun there
Here is very nice view of the river
Beautiful place to walk you would not know you were in the heart of the city
Great for a walk jog or bike ride
A lovely little spot to relax in for some peace and quiet!
Not a sufficiently large footprint for a good rural ramble but can be supplemented by a walk through Sarehole mill park across the road.
Amazing place peaceful calm relaxing fresh air nice river close by a must see
Excellent habitat for water birds, badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and a couple of muntjac.
Love the stepping stones over the river. Tolkein fans can talk a walk back into time.
Great place for an adventure. Remember you wellies
Quiet a long park, connects many recreational centres. One of the best natural parks for going for a walk. Love the plantations. It feels really good because of the beauty it beholds.

Lovely place for a walk.
It's a good place to ride bikes and for walkers.
A long country path along the side of the River Cole between Small Heath and Yardley Wood. It connects several urban centres but lets you believe you're not in the middle of a built up area. You can see all sorts of wild and bird life. At various times I've seen little deer and kingfishers alongside the more usual denizens. A hugely valuable access to nature for local residents and a triumph for local amenity provision.
