Reviews of Ogmore Castle
A. G.
Lovely castle. Good place to visit with kids or friends. Beautiful place is best to capture photographs. We can see horses there at times. I do recommend this calm place .
F. P.
Lovely castle to explore and also a great place to sit and watch people horse riding and people walking across the stepping stones, or in our case when we were there, some idiot in a range rover 😫 Parking can get very busy at times. Great starting point to take a walk around the area/dunes.
P. J.
Highly rate this castle ruin and surrounding area, I've been coming here for 50 years plus. Parking very limited and caution with the tides as the car park area can get flooded. Great fun crossing the stepping stones, be careful seen many over confident take a dip lol. If you cross the stones it's worth taking the short walk to Merthyr Mawr village a chocolate box come Agatha Christie delight. Back to the castle, great for a picnic the kids can run wild and there's a pub across the road.
D. H.
Wandering around Ogmore castle ruins and trails was a lovely chilled out afternoon out for all the family. Strolled around the ruins, crossed the stepping stones and walked the footpaths to the beautiful Merthyr Mawr with its stunning chocolate box thatched cottages. Finished the afternoon with a huge slab of cake at the garden centre in Ogmore village! Perfect! 😊👌
C. J.
Beautiful castle ruins on the banks of the Ewenny River. The property is looked after by Cadw but is not staffed so you can visit anytime, and it is particularly enjoyable to visit early on a sunny morning. There is a small car park on site and some historical information display boards in the grounds. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
L. B.
Beautiful place to visit. The castle ruin was larger than expected. Free to look round. There's a very small free car park next to the castle (about 5/6 car spaces) and stepping stones, down a very short narrow road.
N. R.
Actually the castle is already ruined and just a little bit is left.
No ticket needs for entry to the castle.
Parking is availble.
Even if the castle is ruined the view is fantastic.
Castle is situated near to river and you can find stepping stones throgh the river to cross it when there is low water level.
More people came here for sight seeing, dog walk, and horse riding.
If you cross the river and walk around you can find a hanging bridge as well.
River is not deep and its an amazing place to have photoshoots.
P. /. H. H.
Nice little castle ruin, not that big but a nice little place, and nice Walks, you can go over the river, across the swing bridge and up to candleston castle, nice little walk, nice place for a picnic.
P. A.
Lovely free afternoon. We explored the castle then went over the stepping stones for a walk. Beautifully kept.
L.
We visited on a hot sunny day. Lovly clear cool river. Ice cream van and a look around the castle ruins.
s. s.
Very nice place to visit for free!
Good spot to have picnic and a splash in the water with horses and sheep in fields very close by.
Only bad point was there was no toilets that we could find...
R. F.
Nice place for a walk and enjoy some time. It it is free, has free parking and nice stepping stone.
C. S. G.
Easy to get to, nice views, horses and sheep around so be careful with dogs off leads.
L.
Ogmore was built over 900 years ago in the 12th Century. Very beautiful area, we had a walk this morning at the Ogmore Castle beside the river. Recommend it!!
K. S.
The site was closed due to bridge repair maintenance, but you could still see alot of the ruins. There is limited amount of parking spaces so we has to park up the road and walk
C. G.
Lovely place for a walk. Great landscape views.
J.
It's free to visit Ogmore Castle and it's well worth a visit. The grounds are beautiful and there was no little anywhere when we visited. The can see Ogmore stepping stones from the grounds and also from the carpark. If you venture over the stepping stones you can find your way to Merthyr Mawr and beautiful village with that he'd cottages and a quaint little church. This well kept village is also worth a visit.
G. T.
Lovely ruins of a castle an information board tells you the history of the castle just before you enter, castle is next to the river ogmore with stepping stones to cross to other side. We parked in the carpark with the swing bridge, car park by castle is a bit smaller, Few families enjoying the water, you would need beach shoes as lots of pebbles, Lots of horses in the field and a few came to get some water, which was a great photo opportunity.
m. r.
Beautiful place to visit with the river and stepping stones
P. W.
Beautiful place that's free to visit.
It's Beautiful with the river running past, however this river here is tidal and if you've gone walking check the tide as I've seen so many cars being dragged out of the car park after being flooded by the tide
J. J.
Beautiful remains of the castle. Well kept and clean. Stepping stones across yherivet were fun, son loved it, even better watching other people stumble across, could sit there for hours watching horses walking through the river and kids playing. Would benefit from some bins around the area. The car park is small so getting a space is a hit or miss situation.highlt recommend visiting though.
S. M.
Nice castle ruins next to a cute river. Wish there was more info on what buildings were used for, but it was a nice, peaceful stop. Doesn't need a ton of time, but really nice combined with walks in the area.
I. R.
Beautiful castle with nice views, great pubs and walks nearby. Definitely head to ogmore beach afterwards. Castle itself is not too impressive.
A. S.
Highly recommend this place for kids and anyone. Great place for a few hours and really nice on a hot day to go in the water
D. J.
Lovely place to visit, especially at sunrise.
D. F.
Lovely ruin although the opening times are anyone's guess. But a free attraction, we walked across the river and make the 4 mile journey to the beach passing another ruin on route.
D. A.
Beautifully picturesque
Castle. A must visit.
D. M.
Lovely little castle with a lovely walk to the sea over the stepping stones. Not ideal for disabled or elderly though as tricky to get access.
The castle is great, but careful not to slip down the hill.
Free parking but it gets busy! Get there early for a spot or there is another car park the other side of the river. Big vehicles I'd avoid if coming late as may struggle to get in and out again of too busy.
D. L.
Very busy on a hot day! Glad the ice cream van in the car park accepted contactless payments 🤣
C. E.
Nice little castle with lots of history, if you go in winter months or when there has been lots of rain park on the main road and walk down because the castle car park does flood. Some nice pubs and places to eat in the area and also a place that does horse riding on the beach ⛱️.
L. J. S.
Nice little day out ..Good to learn a little history. The castle is small but plenty to look at .love going over the stepping stones and nice little walk over the other side ..I did notice that you can book horse riding and it takes you on a little adventure to the beach .
L. H.
Brilliant location alongside stepping stones which lead to picaresque thatched village of Merthyrmawr
B. J.
Lovely to visit these ancient ruins the historic facts displayed on boards were very informative and stepping stones over the stream are enjoyable for children and adults alike, free access and dog friendly. Good weather certainly helps or else it could be a little muddy.
K. J.
Beautiful historical site to visit, decent parking, most areas of the castle remains are easily accessible, there’s picnic areas (benches, green areas). The surrounding areas are gorgeous, plenty of places to walk and explore, and the sea is only down the road. I have been here many times and will definitely be returning.
P. G.
Always very nice beeeautyful nature all around
T. B. G.
Such a beautiful, untouched lovely corner of the world. Spent many days here picnicking, paddling, skimming stones and admire the stunning views. This place will always be special to me.
D. G.
Beautiful and peaceful place
C.
Beautiful walk through the castle grounds, from the car park you can walk across the stepping stones which makes for a good photo and the water flowing down to the sea is lovely colour. And makes for a fantastic walk down to ogmore by sea.
Z.
Nice little walk around, and crossing the river over the stepping stones. There are horses there you can pat, The castle is small and quite derelict.
B. M.
As long as the weather is nice, worth a visit to these ruins. Not a huge amount to see, but set in pleasant grounds close to the river. Small car park for around 20 vehicles, if parked sensibly!
Good walk over to the "Bouncy Bridge" and into the quaint village across the pathway.
D. H.
This is a fascinating site to visit. Don't expect a huge complete castle, but the ruin is charming, and the stepping stones over the river are fun. If you get there at the right time, you can watch the horses fording the river.
j.
Lovely castle ruins. Kids loved to run around and explore. Stepping stones to cross the river, lead on to plenty of walking areas.
N. C.
The beautiful remains of a Norman Castle, a very good chance to see up close how they lived years ago, with the added bonus of the famous Stepping stones across the river Ogmore.
L. T.
Do really like this place... Remains of a castle - ✔️ wild horses ✔️ water ✔️ There is a small car park. A great place to go for a picnic kids can explore the castle. There are stepping stones to get you to the other side of the river.... There is a pub near by which serves good food..take a couple of minutes to get to by foot. All in all a good day out to explore and enjoy some family time.
D. M.
Free castle to visit. Kids loved it. Also loved walking over the stepping stones over the river to feed the horses the other side.
S. J. H.
Ok, there isn’t a huge amount of the castle left, but it well worth a visit for the location alone.
What a beautiful setting with the river and it’s stepping stones. Out of the three castles we visited today by far this is my favourite and I will be returning with my proper camera that’s for sure
There isn’t much parking here and there didn’t seam to be anywhere else either. We didn’t drive further toward the town, maybe there is more parking that way.
Just a word of caution those stepping stones are really slippery 😁
B. H.
Lovely little place just off the main road. If you like old castle ruins then this place is worth a visit. Pleasant walk around the grounds with some nice views and a shallow river with stepping stones to get across the other side
R. M.
Great place to spend an hour.
Nearby stepping stones are an instant attraction and it's quite a novelty to walk over and fun to cross. Far from difficult for the average ability.
There's horses on the other side which are best left alone unless they approach and you'll know by their reaction if they want your attention. We've found them to be friendly.
The castle ruins are great to explore. The deep grass perimeter moat is great fun for kids to run up and down. A very relaxing place to visit, clean and well presented.
Don't park at the riverside bank during high tide!
R. B.
Beautiful place to go for a nice walk and the for the kids to explore. The castle is a nice piece of local history with some good information boards around the site.
M. C.
Lovely place to go for a wander, and head over to the beach! It’s a bit of a trek to the beach from the castle… so if you have little ones it’s probably easier to visit the castle and then drive over to the beach.
The actual car park for the castle ruins is fairly small, but most people managed to get a space
K. D. A. K.
Came here for a mid evening walk. As well as the sheep and baby lambs around this beautiful castle ruin we also saw a family of Otters by the stepping stones that go across the stream. We took some beautiful photos. Very relaxing highly recommend 😁
D. H.
Nice area for a walk, lovely, horses and wet feet, mind your steps across the water.
T. A.
Fantastic place!! The kids loved climbing the castle walls and rolling along the grass! We then walked along the stepping stones and found a little steel that the kids had a paddle in and did some stone skimmimg! Didn't cost a penny either so bonus!! Also the horses there are very friendly!!
C. H.
One of my favourite places, been visiting for over 30 years
K.
Beautiful ruins a stone's throw away from Ogmore Beach, lots of horses, a really nice "stone-crossing" on top of a small river for families and anyone who'd like a mini adventure!! Come here when it's sunny to experience all the good vibes
s. a.
beautiful place to visit, some shots and videos were taken by our drone.
our visit 2018 and 2019
I. K.
Beautiful place. Unfortunately the gate was locked.
M. H.
Nice ruins of Ogmore Castle, run by CADW but free to enter. There is a small car park that closes around sunset. There is a stream/river next to the car park and there's stepping stones across which is fun and picturesque. If you fall in it's only about a foot and a half deep.
J. M.
This is a great castle with free entry. Sure it's not the biggest, but the ruins still offer lots of opportunity to explore and clamber about. There is an excellent most you can explore and clips down. Next to the castle is a river with stepping stones across it (without them you'd get pretty wet). It's worth noting that some of the steps are a challenge (for instance small kids will need lots of help) and there is a chance you'll end up with feet in the water (up to thighs on an adult).
There are no loos, shop, our food and drink facilities. With the river and the castle combined you could spend a good two hours here.
N. D.
A fairly substantial ruin alongside a lovely river. A gorgeous setting. Well worth a visit in the middle of a dry summer to avoid any potential mishap with the "area liable to flooding" car park and to be able to use the stepping stones across the river.
A. R.
Lovely location for old castle ruins by the river, stepping stones allow you to cross the river onto the footpath network but they are underwater at the moment due to rainfall, so you have to walk up onto the main road and turn left along to a footbridge or just get wet feet!
M. A.
To see the horses trotting down the lane to the river crossing was amazing.
a. d.
Lovely place for a walk kids enjoyed
J. M.
Very nice castle , fun to explore around . Furthermore you can climb up the walls of the castle for a nice view. Not usually too crowded aswell.
C. D.
Nice little castle in a picturesque area, can get quite busy, we went there on a cloudy day and the car park was full id imagine on a hot day it would be even busier with people enjoying the river that runs along the castle. Bit of a bumpy lane to get to the car park and id imagine its succeptable to flooding.
s. w.
Lovely castle :-) Too many people crowded in, very small car park.
P. G.
Well worth a visit whether you're local or a tourist. Good for the kids and there are stepping stones to reach the opposite river bank, but be aware this is a tidal river and prone to flooding. 👌😊
A.
Great old castle ruin to explore with the kids, not the biggest site, but lovely views over the Eweny. Parking by the river, can be muddy in winter. No toilets. Pub walking distance. Lovely early morning or at sunset.
H. P.
Interesting castle and stunning views!
A. C.
Web site said closed on Monday but was closed on Tuesday but plenty to do around the area
m. l.
Pretty and interesting, especially the stepping stones over the river, can be a bit slippy though! Unfortunately the grounds and castle were closed.
N. G.
Wow what a wonderful place to pop by and just take in the history. A perfect place for family fun or a simple dog walk especially the stepping stones.
J. P.
Quiet & peaceful, free car park & entry. Stepping stones are a must to try, lots of lovely walks once you have crossed them.
A. C.
Not the best place to park , lovely place if you like your history and have a great imagination.
R. B.
So lovely, lots of horses, there’s one stepping stone that’s on a bit of an angle… but otherwise fairly easy. If in doubt, take your shoes and socks off and wade across.
K. W.
Beautiful place to visit. The castle and the surrounding countryside are amazing. Worth the visit.
W. a.
The location is great, parking is a muddy area and the castle is ummmm, it's OK. Castles are the greatest evidence of a time gone by there must be a thousand stories connected to this castle, the history, the families and people that worked and lived here over the years and Cadw have been generous enough to provide 2 small information boards that don't provide much information at all. The rooms aren't labelled, so you have to use your imagination as to what area you're standing in. It's a nice area, calm and peaceful, on a sunny day I imaging it would be lovely, but I can't imagine the people that lived here once apon a time because of the limited information provided.
T. B.
Liked the place , had some fun with the family trying to cross the small river on the step rocks 😂 can get a horse ride close by if you want more adventure .
H. T.
Great views, well looked after castle remains, generally clean, great walks.
D. W. M.
This is a great place to visit on a nice day, although the castle itself is historic and therefore degrading as time goes on it makes a great backdrop for photos. You can walk across the stepping Stones on the river which runs alongside and explore the countryside - great for dog walks and to take in the views.
If you're taking younger children, do be careful of the swans who often frequent the river - they may look beautiful but can get a bit agitated and therefore this may scare them!
I come here regularly to record camera and video tests for smartphones - one of our national treasures!
H. G. (.
Beautiful place to visit
G. B.
Fantastic area of beauty , great for walking or just having a picnic, free parking up the top or down the lane by the river.
S. P.
lovely way to spend the afternoon. the stepping stones were great fun
G. H.
Small ruined Mott and bailey castle. Some interesting stone features left. Set in stunning local countryside. Worth a visit as part of a general tour of the locality. Couple of quality pubs nearby.
D. H.
Another castle. It has a few history boards, so it is possible to understand some of its significance. It's free and the countryside is lovely.
R. F.
Beautiful place to visit with lovely walks.
M. J.
Free to walk around, next to a river with stepping stones for a bit of fun. Plenty of horses around and a riding stable for trips down the river to the beach.
a. g.
A small castle, however very picturesque sitting beside the Ewenny River and the stepping stones in the river
H. J.
Great location for getting some fresh air with a bit of history thrown in, attempt the stepping stones at your peril, worth it though as there are some great walks accross the river. Good fun watching others enjoying themselves and getting wet
V. M.
Very scenic area. Interesting castle
T. P. (.
Great castle ruin, in a very picturesque situation. Great walks to coast and Merthyr Mawr sand dunes.
j. w.
Nice location, the castle is modest but interesting for a little free wonder around.
The shallow river is great for the dogs to have a paddle .
A set of stones can take you across the river to other places to explore
D. P.
Part of my heritage. River was so high couldn't walk over the roman stepping stones into Methyr Mawr
R.
A great Riverside circular walk across the stepping stones.
M. N.
Beautiful place to be and if temperature's high a jump in the rivet is highly recommended/even advised :) enjoy
D.
Standing on the banks of the river Ogwr near the natural ford, this monument has an air of ethheral splendor.
Gone are the trappings of medieval finery or awesome power, instead sheep wander the preserved ruin, benches and grass lawns allow the visitor to pause and contemplate.
M. F.
Lovely castle great for all ages
S.
Great - just to have fun walking back and forth on the stones.
C. G.
Currently closed for maintenance work. We still had a lot of fun playing in the river and and lovely walk too.
E. S. S.
Beautiful serene place with stepping stones over the river!
C. T.
Lovely scenery. Wild sheep are friendly. Lovely castle remains.
E. M.
Very nice place, peaceful.
D. D.
Kids love it there. Hide and seek around the castle then across the river on the stepping stones to the sand dunes.
M. L.
Great little area, the ruins provide a good backdrop and some exploration. The local riding club and their field of horses entertain crossing the river, but the star is the stepping stones across the river.
H. S.
Its the best place to go to enjoy a peaceful bank holiday, and I just love the location of the site, still quiet a shame that the castle isn't there anymore but the gardens are still adequate. To suit all family an friends needs, I love this place.
F. O. T.
When we travelled to Southerndown from Bridgend, we passed Ogmore. I immediately spotted the castle ruins there!
The ruins are accessible through a small door and are free. You don’t see much of the original castle anymore, but it’s sure nice for lovers of ruins!
C. C.
Interesting castle ruins, sheep run freely around it, and the river/open land around is pretty.
Not the easiest of accessible places for a basic wheelchair, and there are some steep steps for crutch users. And sheep droppings everywhere - slippy! Wash your crutches in the river before you get back in the car, OK?
A. T.
Beautiful peaceful setting. nearby riding school for the will be John Wayne... Lovely ruins.
T. D.
Amazing castle ruins! nice walk around the area too
C. H.
Stunning place to visit .
Lots of history & views .
A real beauty spot .
P. M.
Taking our Grandchildren to the stone remains of Ogmore Castle is like going back in time...you can walk through the remains and still make out areas of the castle and you can picture what it was like in that day. Information boards are there with good information. Just below the castle you have the stepping stones to cross the river and a lovely walk to the little village of Merthyr Mawr and continuing on to the sand dunes of Merthyr Mawr. Picnicking is a must in the area with the family just a lovely day out.
Just a word of warning...when the river is in flood be careful on the stepping stone as they become very slippery and if you are NOT sure footed slipping in is easy...we have seen people and children fall in.
After all these years it is still as beautiful as ever and a lovely place to visit. For visitors who love walking it is a great place to start from ... crossing the stepping stones over the river and walking to the Sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr. But it is also lovely to sit and enjoying the peace and quiet. The stone Ogmore castle still holds ones attention when you walk around it whether young or old. . Most enjoyable.
D.
Free family day out beautiful castle ruins with stepping stones.
N. J.
Absolutely love Ogmore Castle and the Stepping Stones.
m. s. (.
Great outdoor experience.
H. J.
Lovely castle. Stepping stones next to it to access Merthyr Mawr. Limited parking.
H. L.
Stepping stones across the Estuary, a real treat but don't get caught out by the tide!
S. G.
Limited parking beside the stepping stones
H. J.
Nice castle with a pub opposite. There are stepping stones to cross the river. A nice place to chill and relax
V. A.
Fantastic castle ruin in stunning scenery
T. B.
Great place to go Horseriding on the beach
D. M.
Gorgeous setting with very nice walks nearby
M. C.
Stunning village with Castle ruins. Cafe and pub nearby. Beautiful scenery and walks
P. W.
Much better castles to see, but it's free to enter and worth going to if your end journey takes you near
S. b.
Stunning location ideal for kids and dogs
N. W.
Not much of the castle left but in a stunning setting with lovely walks surrounding it. My children and I had great fun exploring and playing hide and seek in the ruins. The castle is right next to a river which has stepping stones crossing it, which was also great fun. Only downside is the car park is quite small. 5 minutes from Ogmore by the sea beach.
K. B.
Great place to chill beside the river when the swans are about.
M. S.
What a fantastic place, and free, to boot!
Stepping stones across the stream into a tranquil landscape, then back to the castle ruins, of which enough stands to give a great impression, especially to imaginative youngsters!
And no-one to tell them not to climb on the ruins... I wonder how long for!
Plenty of pubs around to grab a bite in the awesome peacefulness of the area - but do watch out for sheep in the road.
E. W.
Love it here our favourite

d. c.
Lovely place to visit, have a picnic in the grounds of the castle, or try the local pub, just 100yds away,
Just across the stepping stones is the tiny hidden village of merthyr Mawr, steeped in history, with its idyllic scenery and thatched roof cottages, surrounded by sand dunes, and protected from the sea , it's a must see for any visitor to the castle x
A. C.
Had dog with us but lots of sheep about so just left as sheep had young ones with them very aggressive
L. M.
Quite a peaceful place with history.
A.
Lovely location just 3 miles from my B&B at Tree Tops, Brackla. You can walk to the beach from there.
L. G.
Gate Closes at 15:30 but great place to walk the dog. I wasn't able to go in but the stepping stones are here to.
C. N.
Lovely site
M. D.
Free no cost when I arrived 😎👍
g. H.
Stunning for sunrise and sunset
K. H.
small car park but really.good walks or cycle rides. kids will love it in the water. just bring a towel and a spare set of clothes as they will get wet playing. ruins are nice. to climb and kids were playing in. also horse riding on site to.
J. A.
Quaint little ruin to visit alongside the river, however be very aware parking on site is limited to around 10 cars or so. Access is alongside a riding school and can very easily become congested with traffic on/off the site. Kids love playing on the stepping stones that cross the river too.
I. A.
Beautiful place and lots of fun to be had
P. S.
Very limited car park space, nice free entry
B. N.
Beautiful location, can be a little muddy. Really close to the pub!
M. L.
I enjoy the walk on the ruins.
j. i.
We went for a quick visit here on a beautiful sunny day. It is free to get close to the ruins. Just a pity there were people actually climbing on the walls of the ruins. They are quite something to see and if you are in the area I would highly recommend paying a visit. And make sure to go over the stepping stone in the river near by. Lots of fun!
S. R.
There's a small free car park adjacent to the castle at the bottom of a small single track road.
Horses frequent the road from the stables that share this space so take it slowly as you go.
The car park is literally on the riverbank so be aware that weather conditions will make the car park larger/smaller and potentially muddy. You'll find an ice cream van here in prime time summer.
The Norman castle, circa 1100, is in decent shape but missing it's original double glazing.
Plenty of grassy spots to stop for a picnic and some fun stepping stones across the river if it's not too high.
6 minutes drive from Ogmore beach car park or 15 minutes drive from the car park at Merthyr Maw sand dunes.
T. M.
Hard to park stepping stones get busy a lovely place for a picnic park at Merthyr mawr watch the mud
A. C.
Ruin is fairly basic but sufficient to show the basic layout of the castle and how the fortifications worked. Excellent location adjacent to the River Ogmore providing plenty of opportunities for photographing the attractive landscape and the free roaming horses, especially when gathered on the nearby bank. River has stepping stones across it offering walking routes on the attractive floodplain. Limited parking.
A. J.
Informative, well kept, lush green. A delight to visit. Have lived near for a few years now and never knew you could pop along, sit on the verge by castle and have a picnic. There were a few families do that and it looked lovely. Shame about the weather though, but we are in Wales. 🤭
D. M.
Nice easy walk, beautiful scenery
S. G.
Attractive ruined castle. Nice views of the Ogmore estuary.
Just the castle, no facilities.
Car park may flood during high tide.
C. W.
A spectacular castle which is a wonderland for all the family. Stepping stones over the river are an additional delight. Wild horses surround you in nearby fields. No facilities on site, so take a picnic or walk a few minutes to the local pub.
P. B.
Lovely little space to have a picnic and take a horse ride to the beach
S. C.
Great place to wonder around if you have a spare half hour. The castle itself is very small but you could go for a picnic. Dog Friendly too. Lovely views and nice to watch the horses. If you keep driving down the narrow road through the gates there is a carpark right at the bottom. Peaceful and next to it is a farm where you can arrange a tour on horseback of the surrounding area.
J. A.
Superb castle in beautiful surroundings, well maintained grounds and very peaceful.
Free to enter and well worth a visit.
Be prepared though, car park is small and is often full.
E. D.
Cymru is littered with the remains of fortresses of all eras each with their own history and stories. Cadw has the unenviable job of running a large proportion of these, including Castell Ogwr which sits on the River Ewenny near the Vale of Glamorgan's border with Penybont (Bridgend).
This is no Caerffili or Caernarfon so don't expect spiral staircases, interpretation centres or little shops. To the uninitiated Ogwr is little more than a pile of stones, but there are plenty of interesting features and the real sense that you are standing in an historic monument. Take time to read the information boards that are dotted around the site and consider downloading the Cadw app to learn more.
There is no entrance fee and if you're lucky you can have the whole castle to yourself, although it sits in an area popular with walkers, horse riders and families so it's rarely as quiet as you might like. A small area of rough stoney ground serves as a carpark for around half a dozen vehicles, but this is prone to flooding when the river is high so be careful; you may wish to park a little further afield, in Merthyr Mawr maybe, where you can cross the swing bridge and stepping stones to reach the castle. Or you might want to park down toward the seaside village of Aberogwr (Ogmore-by-Sea) and approach the castle the way that marauding Welshmen may have when it was at its most dominating.

Interested place, very romantic, nice walking place
G. W.
Excellent location! A castle within a really nice and quiet landscape. By car easy to get there. Very recommended any time, as long it is not raining or bitterly cold... Nearby you`ll find two nice pubs / restaurants. Or rent yourself a horse from the opposite riding school and discover the surroundings. Free Admission to the castle grounds!
R. V. D. W.
A pretty area and the river is nice
N. K.
Beautiful place to stop and look around.. its right next to the river and it's free..
M. J.
What a nice place to walk around in the sun, and the beach down the road is fantastic 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
M. G.
1000 to castle ruins. Free to enter, free (although busy) car park. Kids had great fun on the stepping stones across the river below too.
m. p.
Beautiful sunset at Ogmore castle.
A. H.
Lovely little castle to explore. Next to a river with stepping stones.
I. S.
Fabulous place to visit with our without family. Car parking can be perilous not a lot of it. Make sure you take a towel as the steppingstones are very tempting and slippery when wet. Go and enjoy
M. K.
Anyone sees a wallet floating about lemme know 😂😂
M. A.
I just adored this place.
s. h.
Although this castle is badly ruined there is lovely stepping stones across the river. Very picturesque looking back at the castle and nearby thatched house. If you are lucky you will see people crossing the river on horseback also.
N. A.
A short walk from a swinging bridge right next to a open car park. Had to cross the River Ogmore thru big flat stones placed across the river which adds to the adventure of the entire trip.
n. s.
Lovely castle, no visitor centre, just a nice place to sit and view the ruins, there is a pub across the road, next to the castle is a slow moving shallow stream, with stepping stones, you can walk across and sit by the river for a picnic. The river is slow and shallow so pretty safe for kids to play freely. The local horse riding centre grazes their horses here also so they roam free, be wary if you have a dog. In the summer when we aren't locked down their is a small carpark for half a dozen cars which can be a bit tight and sometimes an ice-cream can comes down.
G. O.
Good starting point for a coastal walk. Remember to check the high tide times if you want to get across the Stepping Stones!
P.
Very lovely castle, there's a car park just as you turn onto the road and stepping stones across the river, obviously very weather dependant if you can use them.
B. (.
Chilled for part of the day peaceful enough
B. M.
Awesome castle ruins.
Very well looked after.
Beautiful river with stepping stones to walk across
Only bad thing to say is the car parking is a nightmare
B. S.
Lovely little place. Not much left of the castle but a great dog walking area
M. B.
Very pretty ruins. You can explore the ruins freely, not much is restricted. Nice if you are in the area but not too much there. Free parking and free entry. Gate closes at 7. Very nice stepping stones across the river
S. A.
Great place for kids to run around play hid and seek, some some ruins, sit down have picnic, plenty of sun, views, walk parking is reasonable, first come first served, no public toilets around. Always a fund day out there ™️
C. S.
It's free, nice to walk around the ruins and imagine what it would have looked like when it was in use. There are horses every where and its great fun to cross the stepping stones in the summer too 😊
C. z.
Well kept example of stunning ruins, great fun crossing the river next to it over the stepping stones 😉... worth the visit definitely.
D. A.
It was a lovely place to go and to take the dog to, lovely places to eat nearby, the only down side was the parking charges! £1 for up to an hour otherwise £6!! We just kept going back every hour and saved £4.
A.
Only stopped here for a very quick picnic. Beautiful spot on the river. Use the stepping stones to reach the other side of the river and sand dunes
N. d.
Lovely picture was free to
T. H. A. D.
Good for kids to explore. Parking is very limited. Normally a ice cream van there on a hot day. There are some stepping stones over the river. Good to walk around 😀
D. J.
Great castle ruins for kids to explore right next to river, stepping stones give you access to the sand dunes, public footpaths and a old church. Parking restricted and watch for high tides
P. M.
Really great place for a walk. Stepping stones are not always over the surface of the water butt a bit further down is a bridge which is great too
P. T.
Brilliant 900 yr old monument beside a narrow river with stepping stones you can walk across. There is a place beside to go for a horse ride along the river a short distance to Ogmoor Beach or just walk it and look for crabs in the rock pools.
T.
Beautiful place. Lovely old pub, gorgeous ruins. Unfortunately I was there with 3 mischievous children and an over excited puppy, so we continued on further and found the dog friendly beach down the road
B. B.
Lovely relaxed morning with the grandchildren. Rained so we had to leave, but we will be back with a picnic soon. Peaceful, beautiful place and granddaughter was in heaven with horses everywhere.
R. E.
The castle itself is in ruins, but the setting is gorgeous and many walks to be had
J. R.
Great fun for kids. Castle, river with stepping stones and great countryside. Not much parking so you may have to park on the main road and walk down
S. C.
There are some nice ruins to wander around (great for hide and seek with the kids!) There are also stepping stones across the shallow river which are fun to cross. Or it's entertaining to watch other people attempt to cross and occasionally get wet!
R. T.
I love this place. We grew up around here and would often walk around the castle. It's a great place to take the family. There is a car park however this is prone to flooding and at least once a year cars get stuck. Do not use car park around super tides
v. p. j.
Fun crossing the river on the stones.
Serene and picturisque locale.☺️😝
k. c.
A really enjoyable and fun place to visit dont forget to try the stepping stones great fun for adults and kids.
D. M.
Went on the off chance down by the beach
and I was very impressed to be honest I loved it there ....And two years ago I when to the castle for my nice is wedding that was a beautiful day also ...
S. J.
Lovely place to visit. Great for dog walks or picnics and a bit of rambling.
K. T.
Lovely castle with enough left intact to give you a great picture of ancient history. Parking near the river below. Lovely place to spend some time.
J. D.
Lovely spot for a picnic and a look around the ruins. The small car park was busy due to half term.
E. B.
Great location. We all really enjoyed it (3 generations). We ventured across the stepping stones and walked along to the bridge. Parking was tight but we were lucky. Will be revisiting. Highly recommended.
S.
People in a place blessed with a double rainbow... Sing songs, art projects... The poor castle barely hot a look in. A good reason to head back. Beautiful evening.
D. M.
Atmospheric castle ruin set in lovely countryside. Must have been very imposing in its day! Nice walk, including negotiating stepping stones across the river, to get there
T. B.
The defenders of this castle (the local sheep) didn't appear to put up much resistance thankfully! Alas, another victory for the English :-)
S. C. (.
Its an old castle.
A small castle good for exploring in the summer or getting your feet wet by trying to cross the river on the stepping stones without falling in. There is a car park but it is fairly small, you can park futher towards the beach or other side of the river.
J. J.
A lovely piece of the welsh countryside.
Watch out if parking your car by the river, it is prone to flooding and this can lead to a very wet car!
M. “. J.
Unfortunately the castle is just a shell but it is in a beautiful place and even better 1 minutes walk and you can sit outside the pub overlooking the castle and stepping stones with a pint of something cold. Cheers.
K. T.
Smaller than I thought & on the day we visited it was much too busy to enjoy the castle or the stepping stones unfortunately
P. P.
Lovely place to go & spend a couple of hours. It's a unmanned Cadw site with free entry with information about the castle on printed boards/plaques for you to read at your leisure. Access to the site is through a closed gate & up a small, grassy incline. There's a small car park which has a very uneven surface, a sign on entry also says that there is the potential for the car park to flood. Car park is locked at overnight, again, there is a sign telling you what time it will be locked on the day. There are stepping stones across Ewenny River from the car park allowing you to explore the local area. Great for kids as there's plenty of space for them to run around & explore.
H. B.
A fabulous fun family place to go and look around. Ideal to get the. Hildrwns u.zgination flowing. Stepping stones cross the river nearby. Suitable for a led body people only, was busy today. The Cafe free app was great xx
G. O.
Beautiful! Free! Fun! Climb all over the castle walls or sit on the lush grass and relax, it's a lovely place to visit. Have a go at crossing the river using the steppingstones and enjoy the walk to Merthyr Mawr on the other side.
G. W.
Great place to visit but not much parking
C. H.
There’s not an enormous amount of castle left to see. Most of the stone was taken back centuries ago to make field walls. Seems fair since the Normans stole it in the first place when on a thieving rampage through Glamorgan. Built on an original Brythonic (Welsh) fortification, this iteration was started about 1106, but was then given to the Norman “knight” William de Londres in about 1140 by the robber baron “Sir” Robert Fitzharmon. It was possibly William’s daughter Maud who walked barefoot on her birthday to give Southerndown (back) to the native Britons as common land (as per the local legend / Persistent Norman propaganda).
There are lovely views here. But it’s worth about a 15 minute visit unless you have kids who need a run around or climb. Be careful on the stepping stones. The river is tidal and one or two of the stones are wobbly and others can get covered at high tide. When the tides are at their highest, the moat fills and the free car park can also get flooded. Very boggy surround if it’s been raining
R. C.
Good for the kids to explore and scramble about, but not exactly hours of entertainment. Good stop off point though for a picnic or on the way to the beach.
P. O.
Great to visit to explore the grounds. Cross the river on the stepping stones. See the horses. Swans and ducks. Great for taking some nice photos and friendly locals who let us stay over in our motorhome in a field near by.
J. D.
Lovely place. Watch out for that middle stepping stone.
g. g. l. 7.
Beautiful and stunning
R. T.
Well kept, informative, lovely setting with associated stepping stones over the river. Beware, tidal!
E.
I've loved this castle since my dim and (very) distant youth. It was especially nice to be able to Geocache here, too.
J. H.
Not much to do but a nice place to sit with a picnic and watch the horses. If you can cross the stepping stones there's is a nice walk to the village of Ty Mawr
A. k.
Brilliant castle. There's also an awesome riding school opposite which you can go galloping on the beach with and a very very good tea room and pub within 2 mins walk. The whole area is fantastic for walks, food, booze, adventure.
C. J.
Beautiful place well worth a visit. The riding school is friendly and professionally run next to it definate bonus, my daughter enjoyed her beach treck immensely 🐎🐎🐎
r. c.
Great for what it is, fantastic place for children to explore living history.
S. N.
I've been to Ogmore castle numerous times over the years in all seasons. It's a lovely place, free to access. Some lovely views and areas to walk and not too far from the beach too.
j. “. j.
Be careful on the stepping stones when the water is high, go on a pony trek down to ogmore beach or explore Merthyr Mawr sand dunes....love it...love it...LOVe It!!
L. W.
An excellent ruin with fantastic history. Well worth a visit. Parking is risky during flood season it seems as it is literally on the river bank.
Ruins are well... Ruins.
t. k.
Great castle, and great views with a river crossing using the stepping stones
T. E.
Nice castle to visit with the family. Limited parking, stepping stones across the river are fun to try out.

Lovely ruin with a great view of the stepping stones.
D. L.
Small but good views, plenty of areas to sit and piknick, take photos and play in the river, always a nice place to stop off for a bit
M. R.
Evocative and atmospheric. The castle ruins stand on the banks of the river, with stepping stones at low tide leading across to who knows where... we were treated to a spectacular sunset with shadows playing on the water and with the shapes in the huge thick castle walls.
J. P.
Beautiful day out ; lovely walks definitely recommend this place to visit .
P. D.
Beautiful place with great views and walks But no toilets, that said there is a nearby pub with outside seating for a quick stop and a bite to eat. The stepping stones is a must to do !

O. W.
Worth a look
S. m.
Not the grandest of castles but Great setting, stepping stones across river ( subject to tides and river levels) free access but limited parking.
D. J.
Great place to take the children it's free of cost the stepping stones are fun to cross over the river or sit back and just watch people attempt it and occasionally fall in up to their knees
N. A.
Beautiful in the sun
P. H.
Ogmore castle is surrounded by beautiful Welsh countryside, it's free to park, has no entry charges and offers some great views of the rural areas of Merthyr Mawr and Ogmore.
There's public footpaths and plenty of rolling hills and countryside nearby for dog walking and strolling and is in comfortable walking distance of the beautiful and very well maintained Merthyr Mawr estate.
The castle is opposite a horse riding and pony trekking stables and is within 5 mins of two different pubs if you need to stop for food or refreshments. It's probably not the best place to visit in the wet or cold weather, but is perfect for enjoying a few hours outdoors in the summer sunshine.
R. C.
Stunning. Rain or shine it is a lovely place to visit. It does get very busy, so best to get there early or later on. A must visit, it's well worth the journey!
B. L.

S. T. W.
Ewenny - part of the St Thomas Way medieval heritage trail - was shaped by its Benedictine Priory in the Middle Ages, founded in the early twelfth century. Ogmore Castle was built by the Normans in the twelfth century and was the residence of the de Londres family, who also paid for the building of Ewenny Priory.
Historic routes and boundaries are traced across the landscape here: in the Ewenny River, which today, for most of its length, forms the border between the counties of the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend, and which joins the River Ogmore near the coast, where it is still crossed - right by the castle - with its medieval stepping stones (except at high tide!). The stepping stones are a registered ancient monument and would have been the main river crossing in the Middle Ages.
It is likely that William Cragh - 'The Hanged Man' in the St Thomas Way story - and the de Briouzes themselves stepped across these on their pilgrimage from Swansea to Hereford. And the great Roman road, the Via Julia Maritima from Gloucester to St Davids, runs nearby, with a Roman bridge close to the Coed-y-Bwl nature reserve.
D. T.
I love Ogmore Castle, it's so lovely it's always busy not alot of parking, but get there early and you get a space people are always coming and going

The ogre castle was very interesting. To think that ogres built it with ancient Ogrestone while fighting the legendary Candlestone makers is phenomenal. There is still clear evidence of the ogres eating habits.
J. H.
Not much here but what there is - is very nice. Be careful on the stepping stones.
T. L.
Beautiful castle ruin by the river, great starting point for walks to the beach across the country side and sand dunes.
