Reviews of National Trust - Devil's Dyke
S. M.
Beautiful place in the South Downs for visiting with the kids and pets. Plenty of events in the peak season. There are trails in several directions that can take you all the way down to the plains. Sadly I didn't visit on a day the paragliding was on - but I'm sure it would be a right spectacle at the correct weather/time of the day. Highly recommended.
P. J.
So much to see… even though it was foggy and wet it was a great adventure. The views never disappoint! Only shame is the odd dog owner who will let their dog run riot but most people come to enjoy and are considerate of others. Be prepared for some steep climbs but definitely worth the effort. Grab a drink or even some food at the pub on top, very welcoming!
D. B.
Brighton's one of the most beautiful places. Peaceful, happy, meditating environment. Excellent hiking opportunity, quite cheap and nice ice creams. Nearby restaurant with washroom facility. Can get a bus every 40-45 mins. The view from within the bus is wonderful.
T. B.
Beautiful spot, stunning views in all directions. I got talking to a lady litter picking who turned out to double as a tour guide, very informative lady. Very nice looking pub which I didn't visit but I will!
P. S. Great ice cream.
d. a.
Narrow road leading to the place. Plenty of parking. This is a Pay an Display, but if you are NT members you know the score. No toilets here except in the restaurant, not sure what their views are for that purpose. The restaurant is ok for food and drink, though you may have to book. Lovely views across Sussex, especially good for sunrise and sunset. If you want a walk, there is a lot of that but remember if you go down a hill, you then have to come back up ! Be careful of night time critters they seem to swamp the place but hey it's the countryside. Go Enjoy.
R.
Beautiful place to watch the sun set.
Parking is free if you scan your NT membership card.
The pub closed at half 8, but they let us take our drinks outside.
The pictures don't really do it justice really.
A. W.
Not a good time I chose, it's rainy and misty. But also a totally unusual scene. It's also charming and make me feel like sinking and melting with the grand nature~
Definitely recommend to choose a sunny weekend or holiday time, during which there supposed to be seen some paraglidings and other activities.
A. D.
Beautiful day out - it was a nice easy walk after lunch. Car park was packed, so we drove around 20 minutes trying to find a space.
Very muddy, so pack a change of shoes.
360° of stunning views.
B. S.
Nice spot for a picnic, lovely views. Large car park, free if you are a national trust member. Great paragliding take off area.
M. D.
Beautiful countryside, a lot of things you can do walking, camping cycling and horse riding as well, beautiful scenery. Very good location for family and couple or just loner's.
G. P.
Beautiful location great for walks, for childs,
families with strollers and pets. There are different paths to follow, depending on the duration and difficulty you’d like, but even the most difficult walk is not too challenging (couple hours, not too steep but not accessible to strollers). The dyke itself is the only point pretty steep, but you are up in approx 10 mins. There are also completely plain paths and you can still admire the dyke from above.
The views are amazing. Midway, you can also get to a small farm village with a quaint caffè that serves teas and pastries. Otherwise, at the parking lot there’s a nice pub with indoor and outdoor seating, that serves food and drinks. Also accessible with public buses from Brighton, every ~40 mins or so.
R. v. A.
Big skies, great strolling location just outside Brighton. Perfect spot for a long hike and ending at least one of the local pubs for roast, other pub grub and/or drinks!
Be prepared with the right gear, such as hiking boots or wellies, especially in autumn/winter as there are many muddy parts on the trails
J. H.
Wonderful place, with beautiful walks and views over the South Downs. My mother found a fossil of a sea urchin here 40 years ago but the National Trust told her there are no more to be found now. On a less windy day you can see the tiny butterflies and grasshoppers on the grassland but as it's generally windy they are not commonly spotted.
Great food at the Devils Dyke pub too and warm friendly staff.
G. R. A.
There’s a parking on the area, but its only free for the members…
There’s also a bus route here. A good for walking and running here… specially when it’s not raining
A. B.
Beautiful location. Perfect for a family adventure. The fact there is a bus stop right here is amazing. So accessible for people without a car
N. N.
Blessed to watch awsome sunrise. Good trails to walk and hike. Few cyclists were spotted. A perfect spot to getaway from your stress and busy life. There are couple of parking spots on different sides. Got some good clicks on this beautiful sunny day.
P. R.
Visited with some friends, just for some fresh air and a walk. Ideal for walking, with some great views across the Sussex countryside.
Onsite restaurant/bar (part of the Vintage Inns group) - bit expensive and average quality.
a. v. d. w.
Nice place to have a walk and explore with beautiful views. There is also a small restaurant onsite.
C. H.
Fascinating place with many trails and surrounding villages. Will visit over and over again.
J. A.
Very popular with dog walkers and also with hang gliders and para gliders- spectacular to watch. The dyke itself is dramatic with varied fauna and flora. A great place for a short walk (or a longer one) to blow the cobwebs away. It was a bit misty on this visit.
J. S.
Love this place, good for biking, jogging and walking or just want to relax from the bustling and hustling city of brighton.
R. J.
Amazing views whichever way you look! Pub is lovely too!
Y. K.
We have some overseas friends visiting us in Brighton and today we had a very enjoyable day out at Devil’s Dyke , Car park was quite busy, We walked down the hill to Poynings village enjoyed some Beer and light lunch at The village Pub and back up to the top of the hill to watch the flying ( see video )
A. M.
It's too windy but beautiful. The parking is just free for national trust members. There is cafe there and but you can't use the facilities unless you buy something from there. I saw a bus from Brighton and Hove brought some passengers there. All in all, nice place for hiking and enjoying sceneries.
J. H.
What a great place! We walked all the way down and then back up this extraordinary valley. Lots of wild flowers to be seen. You should be aware that the toilets aren't national trust's, but a local pub who don't invite walkers in. You have to buy a pint to use facilities. Rather misleading I think. Lovely pub though with excellent service and a nice latte for just £2.75. Great views too.
D. M. W.
This is, how can I TRY to word it. You simply cannot. Constable tried to capture this place. But in reality. Go. Just try again relaxing respectably looking after the area for your children's children's sake. To late if one day your child asks, "Mum, What's snow like at Christmas. Special family feelings watching children. Don't destroy. Think. Go. Reflect on your child's healthy smile and its future. Simply mezmorizing. Here are a few reasons I captured at 7am one morning.
G. B.
Stunning views for miles around, lots of great walks, good size NT carpark, pub open and ice cream van there today
Popular with everyone.
F. H.
What a great place to visit on top of mountain you’d get to see valleys on each direction and with good telescope you may try to locate France across the channel. The weather feels cold because of the breeze so bring a wind blocker. In summer you’d find flying parachute gliders around. Make videos. Have a lunch in nearby cafe. Dogs would love to run around in open as well. Overall rather beautiful and must visit place in the area.
N. S.
Great place for a long dog walk though kept them on the lead due to grazing cattle. Set trails are available to follow or amble around at leisure and stop for a picnic taking in the great views towards Cissbury Ring and the Isle of Wight.
L. I.
Lovely views and a great place to either go and sit and relax or go for a hike. Popular with kite flyers and gliders too. Good for star gazing come night-time. Dog friendly pub for food and drinks. Lots of parking for cars and vans. Bus service from Brighton.
A. B.
Car park best place is picnic area parking and great walk to main devils dyke restaurant also ice cream van well worth the treat walked to easy route tour beautiful place very sunny as well unfortunately rubbish was all over floor and bins overflowing but beyond that well worth the visit and after that Hove for a beach day to finish day off
R. S.
Is a great place for outdoor activities. There is a Pub and facilities. There are three planned walking routes for all abilities. sunsets (I guess sunrises too but never been there that early) are great. Highly recommended. The Car park only accepts pay by app or coins and phone signal not great. National Trust members park free.
J. C.
Lovely area with beautiful views. Easy to locate and park, parking can be paid via mobile app.
S. W.
What a lovely place. We had a few hours to spare before returning home so we drove up there to see what all the fuss was about. If you don't have a car there is a bus that goes up there regularly. The views are stunning, there are routes that you walk if the mood takes you or you can just settle down for a picnic on the grass. We had a meal at the pub, which was tasty if a little pricy. Perfect place to visit on a warm sunny day.
S. S.
Walked from Hassocks to Devils Dyke then from there walked to Brighton. Walking towards Devils Dyke, we have not met any people on the route. Fantastic views, few hills to climb, flower fields, nature. Then walking to brighton was also amazing but different. Constant views of Brighton, wind mills far away in the water. What a fantastic way to explore the area.
A. T.
Well worth a visit, nice pub. Parking is a little busy and limited
N. D.
Absolutely fantastic National Trust site with beautiful scenery, choice of demanding walks and the soothing allure of nature. Go before 12 noon to enjoy the greatest peace away from the madding crowds. Fair amount of car parking though the 77 bus from various points in Brighton is a great alternative. No NT facilities on site but the local Devils Dyke pub is wonderful for tea and a pee (other food and drink options are available). Saw a majestic Red Kite on approach which was a highlight. Great place for dogs, kids and grandparents, tho watch out for the associated poo from any member of the former.
T. P.
I visit weekly, there's nothing in Sussex that can beat these views!
S. R.
Beautiful views and lots of paths to explore . Nice pub and ample parking.
P. S.
Just get up there! Breathe in the air and the views...the pub up there is great.... its being refurbished...but its fine as it is.... there's also nearly always an ice cream van up there.
My one gripe about going up there is how the council are charging for parking! Is there anywhere u can go where the council don't make money out of parking! Grrrrrr.
But just get up there , even by bus, and enjoy.
R. n. p.
Such a stunning place to sit and enjoy the views or to go off for a nice walk. Great for kids, dogs, families or even if you're on your own. Beautiful views all year round
A. N. L.
A great walk from Brighton with remarkable views! And if you’re feeling lazy, you can take the bus on your way home.
L. H.
I visit this frequently, whether for a dog walk, a walk with friends or, most recently, part of my South Downs hike. The views are spectacular, no matter the weather. Can be very windy at the very top, especially on a cold day, so wrap up warm. You also need quite a bit of physical fitness to walk up and down the hills. A large pub on Devil's Dyke, provides decent food - may need to book to avoid disappointment, although we've been lucky to get lunch just walking in. There's a paid or National Trust members car park too, with quite a few spaces. Bus 77 will take you there (get on at the Brighton Pier) and back to Brighton via Hove and the train station. A beautiful day out!
J. L.
Huge wow factor, first visit.
Inevitably busy, luckily found parking space .
Pub ok, out of order ladies loo not ideal on a bank holiday, but tea well presented & served- didn't eat.
Well worth revisiting at a quieter time- good for the soul.
B. M.
Great to spot for walkers, or somewhere to to sit and relax and watch the world go by.
P. H.
One of the 10 stages for the 100 klm Trailwalker. Treated to a beautiful sunset
B. J.
Great up hill clime with the wife on our bikes and a well deserved stint at the top
O. F. L.
Love this place for a walk. Been going for years and there are so many different routes to take, with great views over looking Brighton, the sea and lots of Sussex. It is obviously very hilly though and can be hard work. But thoroughly worth it.
G. I.
Fantastic place for a walk, although can be very breezy at times. Great views of the sea, local villages etc. The pub has an excellent menu and in the car park you can even get a '99'! What more can you ask for😃
J. R.
Wonderful view!!! Lovely day☀️☺️
S.
Pretty cool place for a picnic. Amazing views. Lots of room to roam. Bring your dog! Nice restaurant very near. Parking is pay but ample.
1.
Beautiful views! Restaurant/ pub pricey for what the food actually is (mediocre) Lovely waiting staff though. Cod and chips £15 and drinks at the higher end of price. But good selection of wine.
My partner and I went at sunset which was beautiful.
M. M.
The Devil's Dyke area is exceptionally beautiful, and the car park is convenient, but the paths between the bottom of the valley and the nearby cafe aren't marked very well on the map, and one of them is very steep indeed. Recommended, but for walkers on the fitter side.
F. C.
Nice place to see some sights and sit quietly in the sun. There's an ice cream van that serves cold drinks. And plaques with information on them. Restaurant close by that offers ok meals. Good drive or motorbike ride.
C. H.
Lovely location, great views, service was ok but a bit slow at times. Food is quite expensive and little more then microwaved ready meals. Sent cottage pie back as it had been microwaved to the point where the mash on top was rock solid.
Replacement dish had chewy mash (?!) and the centre was cold.
Really shouldn't have been on the menu if they can't cook it properly. And at about £12 for a microwaved ready meal? Nah.
Won't be buying anything more complex than a sandwich in future.
N. M.
Wonderful walks on the beautiful South downs .
S. C.
Great place for views over Sussex and magnificent sunsets. Sad that the Devils Dyke pub was shut at 8pm on a busy busy night.😕
A. B.
I woulb go back there in tomorrow... The views are amazing. The day we went is was so windy that it could blow you off you're fit but nothing compares with an afternoon there. We went there the walked along the hill until sunset. The sunset was incredible. It is worth seeing it. Do go there during the summer or early autumn to breed fresh air and enjoy the views.
A. R.
Looking to go on a mini hike? Definitely visit Devils Dyke! Such a beautiful green space! You may see some animals on the way! Pub up the hill and also an ice cream truck 😉
K. G.
Great place to fly model aeroplanes and kites. Great for watching hanggliding and paragliding too.
S. P.
The views are gorgeous - rolling fields, distant hills, blue skies, paragliders. Parking is good, and there's a bus from Brighton. But there is nowhere to sit down and enjoy the views, a problem for many. A lady from the local pub was rude when we tried to use a couple of their seats, despite the pub not being busy. Dear National Trust, please could you invest in some benches, for both abled and disabled visitors? Many thanks
S. E.
Lovely for a lockdown walk. Quite muddy and slippery under foot at the moment so be aware, and bring proper footwear, but the views are accessible right from the car park so suitable for those with limited mobility, as long as you don't plan to go too far.
d. n.
Brilliant views, nice pub and walks in the ancient woodland
F.
Nice walking trail. There are different trails for different difficulty levels (I.e. stick to the high road if you don't want to go hiking up and down hills). The map displays several trails you can take for different walk lengths. Don't bother listening to it. There are no markers anywhere along the trail. Just enter through the gate behind the manor and walk as much or as little as you think you want to. If you bussed there, be aware that the bus only returns about once an hour.
R. B.
Fantastic views on a lovely sunny cleat spring day, loads of people stretching their legs and a fairly full car park but beautiful.
The ice cream man was doing a roaring trade despite the nip in the air.
A. H.
Beautiful day 💕 - views are stunning 😍
R. G.
Enjoyed a fabulous sunset at Devils Dyke this evening.
A. R.
Beautiful nature spot. Lovely to visit with children and go for a walk. Lots of interesting things to see, especially in spring/summer. There's a bus that goes there in spring/summer if you don't have a car but if you prefer driving there, you'll find a car park by the pub. Parking is £3 but you usually get a voucher to spend at the pub. There's good food, clean toilets, they're very friendly with dogs and good with children. There's a disabled access entrance to the pub, lovely views from tables by the window.
Other things you can do there is kite flying, paragliding, dog walking, picnics... It's absolutely lovely.
J. C.
Lovely place to go for a walk, can see lots of wildlife like rabbits, crows, rooks, badgers etc. Nice area, but it can be windy even on a sunny day
Y. M.
Amazing views. The staff at the inn were nice and the inn is dog friendly. Reasonable prices, large selection of drinks. Not sure about the food and if there are any vegan options. The parking is £3 for the whole day. Definitely a place I would go back to and potentially do the Devil's Graves trail.
L. O. A.
The Devil's Dyke is one of the most incredible places to visit in Brighton and the UK. The valley is surrounded by green hills which are exhalted for some of the best views around.
I went with my friends some days ago and we absolutely enjoyed the wind, the green, the view, the walk, the run, the chase (we were literally chased by cows, which was fun), and the climbing which was tough but fulfilling.
Devil's Dyke is a must visit if you are someone who appreciates the wonders of nature.
A. A.
Such a nice place to hike. We did a 10km hike, went through really beautiful scenery and it wasn’t too steep or anything. Really recommend for a family hike - you can enjoy a nice time in Brighton afterwards!
F. A.
Perfect place for relax with great views. The trails are easy level in a different range or times. There is a pub to enjoy a beer at the end of the walk. Very recommendable!
T. P.
Its not very often you get a metropolis, seaside living and a national trust park all so.close to each other! A mere 15 minute drive from Brighton and Hove will find you at Devil's Dyke! A pretty spectacular part of the South downs! Your walk can be as easy or as difficult as you like excellent for walking your dog, paragliding, mountain biking, you name it! You can feed and water yourself and the Devil's Dyke pub too! A definite must see whether you are moving to the area or here for a visit! My shody camera work does not do it justice!
P.s Cow's and their mess can been found in South facing fields if anyone is interested in that! 😉
Q. L.
Nice place for mountain walking, some parts can be challenging but not impossible, good for beginners. It has a good view over looking Hove.
G. M.
Shame there are no toilet facilities as the pub is shut. Well done to the ice cream van who has taken the initiative to sell hot drinks.
R. P. Q.
The photos can’t do justice but hope these will at least encourage you to explore this beautiful part of Sussex!
P. C.
Beautiful, can't believe that this is the first time that I have been here!
Where else can you get such terrific panoramic views in the south east ?
And the young lady doing gymnastics on her Harley, well you don't see that every day!
A. G.
Stunning views and lush green out there. Very quiet and lovely drive to this place. We mistakenly drove through the devil's dyke as detour avoiding traffic towards Brighton and were thankful that we did take it. This place is so beautiful and relaxing to eyes.
K. H.
One of the best places to go if you want something to do on a warm summers day, also the effort put into walking about to then get to the top of the hill by the pub and watch the sunset in the west is just beautiful. I suggest to check what time the sun sets and plan your time accordingly as it is a great experience for anyone.
A. A.
Lovely place to go for a walk
P. J.
It is a legendary beautiful spot in South Down National Park. One will get breath-taking views and hidden gems. It offers a good three mile walk which takes you to the alleged burial site of the Devil and beyond to Saddlescombe Farm and the donkey wheel. The area around Devil's Dyke is perfect for taking a walk.
Do visit this place at night as well for mesmerizing star gazing experience.
K. J.
Soo beautiful and great to escape the bright city lights. If you follow the valley and go through the woods you will have to prepare for a tiring walk. After you walk through the woods you will have to trek up a medium - sized hill to get to the top. You'll end up about 20m away from the devil's Dyke pub.
S. H.
This is a great location for a weekend walk. You'll be rewarded with uninterrupted views to the sea and countryside that span miles and miles. The Devil's Dyke Pub and Restaurant makes for a welcome pit stop afterwards. I'm told by the bar staff that it was originally a Hotel, but that was a long time ago. Paragliding is popular here. Watching the pilots launch and land is just an extra point of interest. You'll have to pay for parking from Dusk til Dawn but you can pay with the paybyphone app using location 803350. Get out here and fill your lungs. You won't be disappointed.
Z. J.
Amazing place with scenic views and three different challenging hike trails based on how daring you want it to be.
C. L.
Devils Dyke is a stunning beauty spot with so many paths going in many directions to walk. The sunset on our visit was amazing. Definitely worth a visit.
S. C.
Good food and well priced.
Staff are nice people, recommended to come and order some food and drink and enjoy the view.
Y. S.
I went back here recently for the first time in decades. I hadn't been since I was a child and used to spend the weekends rolling down the hills. It's like time has stayed still here and it's perfect. A retreat from the bustle and fuss of Brighton and Hove, yet just minutes away. My 5 year old daughter loved it too. I can't wait to go back.
V. P.
Great place for an easy walks around the area. There is a pub there that during normality offer meals and drinks.
Does get muddy there, so make sure to wear right shoes :)
m. w.
Great place for the outdoors!! You gotta watch out tho - it is home to the Devil. I've know someone who lost their phone here. I got a puncture on my bike here too. No joke being serious
M. B.
Beautiful location on the South Downs with amazing views across Sussex to the North, and Brighton (and the sea!) to the south. Easily accessible on foot via south downs way or by bus. Car parking is good, but as National Trust, pricey if you are not a member.
B. E.
Really nice! I just wish people would pick up after their dogs more. There's also a lot of burnt spots from possible barbecues. It would be nicer if people were a bit more considerate.
P. Y.
Sunset on a glorious January day. Views from the National Trust Devils Dyke restaurant looking Southwest towards Shoreham-By-Sea & English Channel
L. T.
Great place for walks - we usually do the Beacon to the Dyke walk which takes a few hours but is varied and a lot of fun when it isn't raining. The views are gorgeous up here too and on a clear day you can see right over to Eastbourne. The only negative is that on the last few occasions the bus that takes you up to the Dyke has not turned up so would recommend driving if possible as the bus can be unreliable!
B. D.
Great spot to go for a walk or a picnic. The scenery is amazing. I suggest to visit when it's not too cloudy.
U. S.
What incredible views, they are just breathtaking! Great pub there too for a coffee on the patio or really good for a meal
D. U.
Real haven for those looking peaceful panoramic "nature only". Hills and slopes, wonderful views all around. Witnessed children with kites: perfect spot for it.
There's a restaurant pub if up for a meal or drink, parking charges apply. On way out noticed few parking spots free of charge though .
V. K.
This is a magical place when you visit close to sunset. It has an amazing view of the county. The parking has a £3 daily fee regardless when you buy it, between 8-8pm (as far as I remember).
There is a pub too and if you want to leave car behind, frequent bus service.
Great place for couples, families to spend some time.
S. B.
Too misty to see the views so will return again however the smaller gravel car park seems to be where dog walkers let the dogs out to do their business, we saw two women with a total of 14 dogs. We saw three of them leave mess before they were put on leads and no attempt to clean up after them. Shameful as it seems a nice place to walk, just watch where you are putting your feet.
H. P.
Very peaceful and open place. Don’t forget to pack your picnic essentials.
P. 1.
An amazing place to connect with the nature...
Take your binoculars and you will love it
m. w.
Breath taking views in all directions and all the way to the sea. Some really steep hills to climb. Best views from a pub I have ever seen. Outside seating. National trust car park. Vintage inns menu. Gets very busy. We were told 40 minute wait for food, but our sandwithes arrived in 20 mins so no complaints. Good food as well.
J. R.
Good place to go on walk your dog, there was a pub there as well but didn't go in so can't comment on the food or drink. Quite a large national trust car park but I can imagine in summer it does get quite busy.
m. g.
Lovely views that you can see for miles around. Great place.
B. N. M.
Excellent friendly staff. Food was delicious and very tasty. Perfect for a meal after a nice winter stroll. The views are perfect! Dog friendly!
L. M.
Very picturesque. Took us just over an hour to do the purple route. Great exercise. Breathtaking views of biggest dry valley in the country. Highly recommended.
M. C.
Great walk with some great views. Some bits of the walk are fairly steep so recommend some decent shoes or walking boots. You can access the views in these pics from the car park though.
S. T.
A lovely walk with nature all around and didn't cost a penny
P. A.
Managed by National Trust. Free parking if a member otherwise pay & display. The views north across the Sussex Weald are breathtaking. Management of the car parks are a bit hit and miss which does no one justice.
H. A.
Such a treat to have the beautiful South downs within reach of the city. Recommend the trails which are on the national trust website or on paper by the sign just past the pub car park
T. d. W.
Beautiful views and pub. Car park often very busy.
M. B.
Stunning views, a choice of great walks, and a pub to eat and drink at after...absolute heaven
M. W.
Great walks, awesome views and some mesmerising paragliders.
Parking is free for National Trust members, otherwise its a fee either by cash or by the PayByPhone app
R. S.
Brilliant place so for long walks or just for looking out at the view. Even a pub for food and drinks. Good place for all the family.
m. w.
Beautiful place, recommended for anyone up for a good walk. Good in winter and summer. Some of the paths you can take can be quite steep, but it is possible to take less steep ones of you avoid the bottom of the valley.
S. G.
Absolutely gorgeous. We spent the loveliest afternoon here. So quiet in comparison to Brighton beach on a day like this.
M. G.
Situated on the South Down route, the Dyke is an amazing opportunity for walking.
It has an interesting legend and history that provides a bit of flavor and from a photographic perspective, it does offer good photography all year long.
M. M.
One of the nicest places in Sussex to go to. Great views during the day. Fantastic sunsets and awesome when watching storm over Sussex. There are some lovely walks from here. Boards points out the different areas. Have to pay for parking unless a member of the national trust. Nice pub here to fit a refreshing drink. Hangliders and paragliders are fun to watch. Some Times there is cattle in the fields. Car park can get busy on a nice day. Views for as far as you can see.
M. E.
Good landscape for leisure and sight seeing
R. J.
Nice view, good place for a walk.
A. H.
I've been to most parts of the UK at various times of my life. The area of the South Downs just north of Brighton and Hove is up there with the best in my opinion. Best what, you might ask? If you like fresh air and countryside, enjoy flying kites or paragliding, love hiking, having an ice cream or a full roast in a pub, this place has it all. The view from the top is simply breathtaking with the Weald displayed below spreading out into the distance with farms and various roads. You can hear farm animals, tractors. On a warm summer's day it is the place to be. It can get busy, there's a car park you can use which doesn't cost much to stay for long but I don't think it's hard to get to hiking from Brighton and the effort will be well rewarded!
S. F. K.
A place of victorian history, of trekking and walking
A. M.
Astounding views! And the steepest hills! Had a lovely long walk, made it to the top and had an ice cream 😁
P. O.
Awesome... but be prepared for coins for parking or a smartphone to download the app (but web site worked too) - pub on the top also very nice 👍🙂👍
D. T.
Second time I've tried to visit and again it was closed, when is it open? With such a great position, with views across to the North Downs, it is worth a visit and going for a walk before a drink and lunch / dinner, but definitely check when it's open, you might be disappointed otherwise.
A. B.
Absolutely stunning views over Sussex. Worth the drive just to take it all in. Beware of the bracing winds though.
B. F.
Absolutely stunningly beautiful. Lovely walks with amazing views. Great to go near sunset.
A. A.
Amazing views on a clear day or alternatively atmospheric on a rainy day. National trust car park
L. E.
Great place to visit. Amazing view. Hiking and cycling very popular around there. The see is just 20 mins drive.
S. P.
Beautiful views. Parking cost £3 for the whole day with the National Trust. If you need food or drinks there is a pub here but we walked down to a little village called Fulking and had some delicious cheese and wine. The walk back up afterwards was challenging but it's well worth it. Looking forward to going back again and exploring more of this area.
E. D.
Amazing scenery and a great hike - there are easy hikes and difficult ones - choose your adventure! Pub at the top and watching the gliders flying in the sky is a great bonus!
N. J.
Superb walk....even in the day like today where winds were high, had gales, rain but yet gor to see sun. Blessed to witness the rainbow.
A. W.
A fantastic place to visit and go for a walk, paraglide, play with family, go for a meal out... With fantastic views right around the South Downs it's a truly wonderful experience.
D. B.
Beautiful scenery. Pub very nice, staff very friendly and inviting. Prices a bit steep but nice relaxing environment. Spectactular views especially on a clear day.
M. B.
Excellent for views, and if the weather's not great you can still have an atmospheric walk. Avoid in rain due to slipperiness though.
b. c.
Lovely place for a morning out. Me and some friends went here for an early morning walk, beautiful scenery, parking was cheap enough and only 15 min drive from the center of Brighton.
M. K.
We packed a picnic and sat there for hours. It was great weather, view and when the sun was setting it was a totally different vibe. You have to go there
A. O.
Fantastic views North and South to the sea. Lovely walks, a real treat at sunset.
J. W.
Absolutely gorgeous- worth going.
A lot of skydivers
Recommend driving there and have a national trust membership
T. W.
Car park is £1.50 for an hour not tye cheapest. Plenty of walking but don't expect it to be flat! Would have liked more information about the site.
M. B.
Carpark is ok but dear to pay. Restaurant ok. Not very good service and food options. The South Downs are nice and good view. Can get a bus to seafront.
E. M.
When ever near Brighton, a place you must go and see the sun set. But even in daytime the views are spectacular.
D.
Devil's Dyke is a V-shaped deep valley nearby Brighton & Hove on the South-Eastern Coast of the UK.
Absolutely amazing view from the top hill, even in winter time as there are a lot if green fields and vallies all around.
Quite popular place for the locals, especially for those addicted to paragliding and the similar activities.
Highly recommended to the tourists of any kind.
A. S.
All good, but they removed all bins and as a result you see dog poo all over the place. Other than that - good place to walk with dogs and kids (lovely wooden playground)
d. b.
Stunning views! Very busy on a Sunday but lovely place to walk.
B.
Always love exploring all the walks round the dyke, some of the poynings walks are not for the faint of heart! Take water and enjoy the panoramic views :) for the best/easiest way to get the most out of it park for free opposite saddlescombe farm and walk up to the dyke pub. Easy walk back down and nicer to get the hill out of the way first. Parking at the dyke pub is only free with a national trust card.
S. M.
Lovely spot for downland walk but can get bit busy esp weekends.best to park in small car parks leading up to it and then walk to the actual dyke.good path.
S. D.
Beautiful scenery and there’s a nice pub to go relax . It’s so peaceful. A nice spot all year round !
A. G.
Great place to take in some dramatic scenery, have a stiff walk and reward yourself with some coffee and cake.
M. E.
Breathtakingly beautiful. Well worth the visit. Cheap parking £1.50 ph
P. N.
Nice place with stunning views for the day out. We went to Brighton then pop on the bus 79 to Ditchling Beacon and walk to Devil's Dyke.and there we took the bus 77 back. It's very nice and easy walk in the nature.
N. C.
Really cute place! The interior was lovely and the view is worth the walk!
R. H.
Huge expanse of lovely nothingness! Great for walking, trail biking or horse-riding. Avoid if cow-phobic!
D. K.
Really fascinating place to relax, walk and drink etc.
If you are lucky, you will see amazing sunset and the skies.
S.
5 stars for the huge variety of walks you can do in this wide West Sussex valley. It's a sought after hiking destination, however it's never too busy for you to find yourself lost in nature on your own. Well-displayed signposts for all liking: short, medium, long or circular walks. You can't get bored of it. Whether you go downhill and visit the small nearby villages or just go across the dyke (=canyon) or through fields or across forests. Useful tip: download the South Downs free app to choose your route. Or just take the 77 bus from Brighton station, get off at the last bus stop and get lost. You'll always find a way back (but don't forget your google map! 😉)
J. D.
Amazing views northwards from the South Downs over Sussex. It is a good access point to the South Downs way. There is a decent sized car park and a large pub which serves meals. On the Monday when I last visited it was not too busy but can be busy at weekends.
P. F. (.
Great spot for picnic and a ramble, lovely Pitstop for a m/cycle ride 2/from Brighton
The bar/restaurant gets busy so it is worth making a reservation
R. H.
Great views, plenty of nice walking routes.
M. K.
Beautiful views
Limited parking, parking fees apply (free for National Trust members)
C. L.
Excellent for family walks and superb views (on sunny days). During winter there is also excellent sledging 🛷 here!! There are accessible walks for young and old here, and if you prefer just sitting and watching the world go by there are nice opportunities for that too. Parking is very easy most days and it is well served by buses 🚍 from Central Brighton.
A. S.
Amazing views, so peaceful such a nice place to go for walks
T. T.
A wonderful view, far superior to Box Hill. The car park is National Trust, so you have to pay if you're not a member. There is free parking 10 minutes down the road. Take a walk down to the Shepherd & Dog in Fulking. Come on a weekday to avoid the crowds.
A. D.
No matter the season, it's gorgeous up there. Great for a hike or just taking in the views. The 20 minute bus drive from Brighton Station is well worth the trip. Whoever visits us we make sure to take them up to the Dyke.
C. C. W.
How's great memories and has such a beautiful view. Doubt you could find a better view in the whole of Brighton
R. B.
Amazing views and a variety of trails for all levels. So easy to get to and escape the city, high up on the South Downs!
C. S.
It's a lovely place to visit, fantastic walks with views of Brighton and the sea,
T. W.
Stunning view and lovely place to spend here a day with your family for a picnic.
S. H.
Stunning place. Great walks and views. The pub is a generic type that serves plain food, but the vista's are worth the effort.
C. E.
Lovely scenery and a beautiful place to walk
I. B.
Best view in the world according to Constable. It's pretty incredible and, as a National Trust car park you can park the camper all day - and probably stay over night!
T. S.
On a good day it is brilliant you can see for miles
Also used for para gliding, brilliant to see
I. M.
Stunning views and excellent range of walks for all levels. Close to Brighton. Free parking in car parks lower down.
R. R.
Nothing bad to say about this place, gorgeous pub at the top of a big hill range, from where you can see for miles, on good days paragliders jump from the top and fill the sky with colour. One of my favourite spots in the UK 🌞🌈
L. C.
Beautiful place to walk and admire nature. The hills and valleys on a summer's day is truly a feast for the eyes and a real treat to walk through.
R. S.
What a beautiful place to be on a clear and sunny day. Lots of hand gliders and para gliders use devil's dyke Hill to launch from. We had a chat with a couple of the guys there and it's a really nice spot to be to watch them taking off and landing. We hiked up from Poynings - a small village below and its a lovely walk up the dyke. There is a car park on the dyke but it gets full on nice days, so sometimes a walk from lower car parks can be a good option. If you look on fancyfree website there are free circular walks you can download and print to get the best views of the downs. Those walks start and finish from various villages at the bottom of the downs with great food and drink. A good option if you want to consider something other than the busy pub at the top of the hill.
s. i.
Stunning views and tranquil walks. An absolute must on a sunny day
K. L.
Stunning views. Fabulous walks. Great for picnics (take your rubbish home), kite flying, meditating, blowing away cobwebs etc etc
F. W.
This is a really special landscape for the south of England. We love coming here to picnic, have a walk, fly a kite, sledding (when the snow falls) and watch wildlife.
c. t.
Amazing views and an amazing walk to be had, would recommend
H.
Had a lovely walk, enjoyed the flowers and the views, unfortunately I went on an overcast day.
E.
Just amazing views all around you.Great walks there is a restaurant which unfortunately is closed due to Covid atm, Didnt matter as ice cream van up there selling hot & cold drinks as well as ice creams etc. No toilets.
M.
Stunning natural landscape, even in misty or rainy conditions. Doesn't appear to be any public toilets.
E. S.
Such a peaceful place with wonderful views. Loads of walking trails to choose from.
c. W.
Excellent food. Very friendly staff. Definitely going again
N. D.
Lovely walk with plenty of options for varied routes. Use Seek app to identify flora and fauna
D.
Lovely spot on the South Downs Way. Interesting geology and great walks and views.
W. J. P. K.
Lovely walks with the dog and ending up at the pub on top of the hill for a pint. Fab!
M. Y.
Greatest place for walking especially long walks. Amazing views.
M. C.
If you love a walk in yhr Country side and listen to the silence, this is the place for you .beautiful views of the sea as well .
A. C.
Lovely place to visit when the summer months come. We came to picnic by getting on the 77 bus from Brighton Pier N Stop. Worth the visit for sure!
P. C.
The car park provide access to a fascinating and breathtaking landscape. Recommended.
R. G.
This place is full of amazing scenery. The dyke is fun to hike. It's easily doable for people of all ages. My 4 year nephew ran along the path. The wild life is full of surprises. We saw cricket, foxes dear horses....The clear sky...On a good weather day we can see all the way to the Brighton sea. Easy to reach. Plenty of parking. There is a pub to finish it off. And lots of picnic spots.
M. K.
One of the best locations in Sussex for views of the county, walking, rambling. Gets very busy at the car park.
T. J.
Heading up to Devil's Dyke is a trek for newbie drivers - roads are relatively narrow and you have to go against a bus if you're unlucky. Saying that, buses do periodically go up to Devil's Dyke from the city center.
There is an inn and a decent car park at the top. £1.50 for an hour - not too bad.
There is a trail you can follow or just stay up near the inn and enjoy the view.
Pictures don't do DD justice. Would definitely go again - when the weather is nicer!
M. G.
Situated on the South Downs Way this place has so much to offer. From the ancient fortifications through to the Victorian engineering marvels and again to the present day glorious views this location just never fails to amaze.
Points to note are the remains of the funicular railway just north east from the pub and the remains on both sides of the actual dyke itself of the Victorian suspended cable car.
From Brighton you can catch the 77 bus up to the Dyke every hour. Definitely worth a visit.
K.
The views are really impressive. We were only unlucky that the weather was cloudy and rainy at the time.
But the other day we were lucky to see beautiful sunset
M. H.
Excellent location for walking to or from. Branch out across the south downs and see the very special views. You can easily reach all the way back to Mile Oak Farm and surrounding areas
The local vintage inn does great food and is dog friendly.
Fully recommend for walkers and sights of the South Downs.
B. V.
Amazing view. Classic. Can also stay with a camper can for the night. 3 ponds parking.
K. S.
Wonderful view for sunset.
A. S.
Its a beautiful site look back up across all the villages into the distance. On a good day i am told you can see up to the Surrey hills,( but only if you have fantastic binoculars of course). 😂
B. E.
Beautiful place to visit! Highly recommend Brighton & Beyond tours if you're coming from London or Brighton.
M. M.
Amazing views across the north and south of Sussex. Parking is excellent and there are numerous footpaths. It would be difficult for pushchairs and disabled people to venture far from the car park.
Avoid the pub, we were treated badly by a member of staff called Sally. She was rude and abrupt when we tried to order before 12.00, then she refused to serve us after 12.00. First af all by arguing with us about the time, then telling us they were not ready to take our order yet. We had an awful experience here.
k. a.
Astounding views, great walks and a wonderful pub (probably will need to book) is a great place to have a meal or coffee.
And like most of Brighton dogs are welcome which always a plus.
Can get very busy in the summer so parking can be an issue. Pay and display parking though that could just be the main car park, there are quite a few satellite car park for an alternate starting point.
C. M.
Beautiful part of the world, doesn't ever get too busy because of the steepness of the walk.
L. C.
Amazing place to go for a walk and a nice cozy pub to replenish yourself at the top.
P. W.
Handy car park. Good information and bus trip into Brighton. What's not to like!
K. J.
Beautiful place. Lovely for family walks and great scenary
U. J.
Amazing place, beautiful scenery and vast land to enjoy the nature!

m. r.
Beautiful place to walk. Sensational views
A. R.
An amazing place to go on a long walk with the family and dog another thing i absolutely love about this place is the legend about the dyke
J. C. E.
Great view. Lots of walking!!! Wear comfortable shoes. Be ready to crawl at some point. 🤣😂😆
A. K.
Lots of great walks around. if the weather is right the paraglider and handgliders will be out.
Remember to bring your national trust card otherwise the parking is £4.
H. B.
The 5 stars are for the amazing view. The pub is overpriced compared to the quality of the food and the portions served and if I was just reviewing the pub and the service, I would give it 3 stars considering that they are not that nice and not that ckean. It is dog friendly though, which is a very good thing so, 3.5 on the pub, 5 stars on that amazing view!
M. P. P.
Devil's Dyke, Sussex is a great place to visit, better when the pub/restaurant is open but still great for walking in the Country...
P. H.
Lovely area to motorcycle to. Beautiful views of the south downs and good for watching paragliders.
S. B.
One of my favourite place to get out from town. The small pub serves good food with friendly atmosphere. There is lots of ways to walking around. I spend all summer two years ago. Always love to get back there. Recommended 100%
J. H.
I met up with my favourite walking group here and we all enjoyed the scenery and the stroll
D. R.
What a wonderful place. It can be as peaceful or action packed as you want to make it. Could have happily spent all day there.
m. g.
Lovely place to go for a walk or have a day out
B. V.
Nice view interesting location. It is a nice restaurant in the area, also was there a van with icecream. Planty parking places. Stuning view.
j. s.
This is a must if you enjoy a walk/hike. We covered 5 miles in 2 hours, very well kept as you would expect from a national park and there's a pub at the end of a tiring walk, to recharge. Parking isn't free but 4 hours was £4.00 so not a rip off but if you don't have change you can pay online.
A. W.
Fantastic views, great for a stroll as long as the wind isn’t up!
V. L.
A great place to run around. There's lots to do for the kids with kite flying and activities for £1.
P. S.
Food excellent, service efficient but just a little noisy in the restaurant.
S. 7.
Fields and countryside for as far as you can see. Beautiful walks. Parking. Pub, although didn't go in looked nice from outside.
a. h.
Beautiful views, long walks, child & dog friendly, good spot for watching para gliding on a windy day.
J. M.
Beautiful and peaceful place to visit to gather your thoughts whilst looking over the South Downs, admiring nature
A.
Beautiful scenic place with lovely walks all around. Sadly nowhere to get a snack or a drink at the moment.
D. S.
Amazing view you can see for miles the pub is lovely the staff are so polite and helpful
L. L.
Been going since I was a child. Beautiful spot overlooking wonderful English countryside.
K. M.
Outdoors beautiful National Trust site with valleys and views on all site.
NT carpark and an independent restaurant and cafe on site.
L. W.
Amazing views over the South Downs and great for hikers and runners.
J. C.
What a view! We caught the 77 bus up from Churchill Square, be aware the buses are regular but not often so check the timetable when you arrive otherwise you'll have a 1hr 20m wait.! We ate at the pub, the staff were amazing a so friendly, have had better Sunday roasts in Brighton Town, but there was lots and it was priced as you would expect noweredays!
R. A.
Beautiful place for views over the channel and north of Downs towards the heart of Sussex
R. S.
Beautiful drive and a vast verdant expanse which is pleasing to the eyes and soul. Great place for a day out and picnic.
i. t.
Very beautiful , must visit to get relax and enjoy natural beauty.
J. G.
The opening hours are very short, due to staff shortage. But the drink I had was fine
p. v.
Beautiful sight, good Sunday roast, staff nice and helpful. Thanks for your kindness.

A. A.
Some of the best views around
G. I.
Amazing place. Come here to see the sunset. You won't regret.❤️
V. R.
We did the figure of eight walk around the valleys and to wildflour cafe. It was a lovely walk suitable for beginners and children, but enjoyable even for experienced walkers! Gorgeous views and excellent paths provided by the National Trust!
Y. H. Y.
Nice view and landscape, with a pub here serve food and drinks.
M. A. M.
Wonderful, attractive place, fresh air and nature, this place is famous for cows and horses
S. C.
It was better when you didn't have to pay to park.
R. T.
Really nice place to disconnect from the busy Brighton! Peace and quiet only 30 min away!
T. W.
Had a meal in the pub up there which was very good. The views are more than worth a visit.
S. C.
We came here to watch the meteor showers. It was a fantastic view!
W. S.

A. H.
Such a serene place! Loved walking down the valley. So quiet and peaceful 🧡
D. O.
Such fantastic views especially when the weather is clear.
J. H.
Lots of varied walks. Can easily go by bus from Brighton.
Was very worried when I couldn't find a public loo but pub staff were fine despite lots of scary signage.
A brilliant day out. The walk behind the car park is great too.
M. S.
Brilliant scenery and great walks along the South downs way
C. K.
Great views and different walks to do around the area
T. D.
Well I have been told that it's beautiful at Devil's Dyke. Today it was very windy and the fog came in very quickly. Didn't stop us from having a great walk.
C. T.
Such a beautiuful place for a walk on a sunday, its very windy so be prepared
E. F.
Lovely views and a great place to walk.
G. G.
Always lovely views when the weather is nice. Great place to start on a South Downs way hike
K. S.
In the fading light of evening there were many people still walking about enjoying the views. At full dark there's a sea of lights all around. The pub had tables well spaced apart & cleaned down between use. Table had been booked, the paper menus brought over, reasonable choice of pub food, well priced and there was quick service. Helpful & pleasant staff. Overall a good experience.
L. G.
Amazing views, great for a sunset ☺️
c. y.
Lovely spot to go for a walk, we didn't stay to long, the views are amazing.
C. B.
Fantastic views across the downs and beyond
A. G.
Beautiful place to relax and enjoy the peaceful view
P. K.
Great place to stop and have a drink or something to eat. Is also a hotel but have not stayed here so cannot comment. The views are amazing. Plenty of walks. Highly recommended. Staff are really friendly.
K. G.
Amazing view, parking full packed, there is parking charge, restaurant big and packed as well, lots of paths to walk.
M. T.
A fantastic countryside walk with spectacular views.
H. B.
Beautiful viewpoint of the valley that saved the Christians!
G. D.
Great table service, every member of staff helping.
Great location. Food was tailored to suit, not blown away with the range or quality of offering but a good pub standard nonetheless.
M. M.
Very nice views although alot of rubbish lying around
P. P.
Another wonderful and amazing area of the South Downs. With a depth up to 100 meters this is Britain's deepest, widest and longest dry valley. The steep sides of the valley are home to very hardy plants and trees that can survive the very exposed conditions. At the moment there are also ponies grazing the area. This place is very, very popular with dog walkers so you may need to watch your step!
G. K.
Awesome place to visit over a weekend and do some activities.
No much information available over there. But still visit and exploring.
Good for walks, scenic landscape, cycling, picnic, paragliding or just a drive through country side.
P. B.
Stunning view and really interesting area.
F. M.
You can see Gatwick Airport from here.
M. H.
Gorgeous views. Take plenty of water and stay on the path to avoid getting lost or injured. There are several paths to take. Going downhill will take you into the small villages that have lovely country pubs.
J. J. A.
Eventhough it was so cold and misty when we went there we still had loads of fun exploring and taking photographs, we also enjoyed having a cup of hot coffee at the pub and café.
S. I.
It's a wonderful place for hiking and leisure walking. On a fine day the views make the walk a breeze. On busy days finding a parking spot might be hard but there is a tourist open top bus going along the walk route, consider using this if its expected to be busy day and is also useful if you prefer only walking one way - as you can take the bus at any stop on the route.
D. W.
This is a great place to visit the views on a clear day are wonderful there are information boards which point out landmarks that you can see. I was surprised that on a clear day you can see the Isle of Wight and also the Hogsback at Guildford. There is plenty of carparking and the charges in Oct 2021 was 6 pounds for the day. There is also a pub which I will review separately.
S.
I really enjoyed this attraction, it’s even better than the pictures and is very eye catching, however every area I moved and took a pic it was repetitive but other than that a beautiful place to go with family. Not a lot of benches however took forever to find one. The drive way is quite dangerous as the roads are small and narrow and two cars go past each other and is it’s a one way road for exiting the place
E. R.
Bit foggy but will definitely be back to do the walk xxxx
A. D.
Amazing hillls and so many dogs :)
L. s.
Great walk if you love a hill, defnitely burns a few calories. Car park isnt free unless you are part of the national trust but you can pay on your phone and its only cheap, plus its next door to the restaurant for a quick shandy after your walk
H. B.
Beautiful walking trails during lockdown😂😇
d. g.
Awesome amazing views, nice pub.
s. s.
It's a beautiful place. I wish the bar was open.
p. w.
Beautiful views but no toilets.
T. B.
It was a cold a windy day, so up the top was very windy. Although the views still amazing. On a fine weather day I imagine even better. Lots of walks to do, so good exercise, and for dogs if you have one. Or to sit with a picnic and take it all in. The car park is fairly small, on a sunny day it could be tricky to park. There are places on the road up that are set back for cars, with a few spaces. Look out for the red kites, large birds of prey, they have been making a come back, and I believe now in this area.
R.
Great outdoor place. Have buses from brighton on weekends and public holidays. Plenty of trails to walk around, a cafe ( closed at the time of writing this review due to covid) and some sitting area. Kids can safely run around and play.
R. T.
A great place for a walk with spectacular views and a convenient pub for a drink with great food. Take the 77 bus up there as the car park gets very busy and it only costs £5. Four hours of parking is £4 and all day parking is £6 so the bus is great value.
P. K.
Nice views. A place for paragliders and hiking.
J. E.
Loved walking down to the Shepherd and Dog in Fulking. The view as we descended was stunning. War but chilly in the wind. On the way we found a mobile phone and a dog whistle. Happily, we took a call on the phone and told the owner we would leave it at the pub. The whistle was also collected from the pub. We enjoyed some fabulous drinks at the Shepherd and Dog.
G.
Wicked place, peaceful & awesome views
m. h.
Always a pleasure to visit, spectacular views most of the time, although I'm sure it has its own weather
J. R.
Okay we get free parking, as we have national trust membership, anyway, but there are loads of spaces. Hang gliders, para gliders, really good food and friendly staff. Enough said.
H. J.
So many different walks to choose from. All well signposted with lovely views. Suitable for young children and dogs too. The car park always has plenty of space, parking is quite cheap for the whole day. Good during all the seasons, end up going throughout the year. Walking sticks can be helpful during winter when it gets muddy and slippery.
E. T.
Photos cannot reflect the beauty of this place. There are 3 different length and level of trails, so everyone can enjoy the walk there.
C. E.
great place , stunning views. Stamina required.
S. O.
Fab views. Great weather.clean environment
N. W.
Fabulous views, fresh air, free from traffic noise.

Stunning views to the west and the east. The pub/restaurant is a welcome stop for walkers and casual visitors. Staff are very welcoming and it's a great place for a hot drink - or something a little stronger. I've never eaten there, but the food looks good.
People who arrive by car should be aware that there is an all day parking fee of £3 (refundable if you spend £10 or more in the pub).
Dog friendly.
T. C.
Lots of good walks around here, but with some steep gradients. External toilets are closed at the moment but will be reopening shortly. The eastern end of the carpark is closed at the moment so spaces hard to come by on fine days and weekends.
J. F.
A lovely place for a barbecue a walk or a picnic.
S. C.
We only stopped off for a short while. Amazing, breathtaking views in every direction, as well as amusing images on the information signs about the area. Awkward for paying for parking if you want to do online as the service is limited, but if you go to the car park on the far side of the pub you can pay cash (I found out later).
M. B.
Absolutely brilliant, but very cold! Walked about for a while then went into Devils Duke Pub, which was brilliant, add hot drinks and food, great service and staff, really cosy place, well worth a visit

One of the most beautiful green areas I have ever scene in southern England. The meadows and hills are incredible and give you total peace from everyday life.
F. B.
A beautiful place for a walk or a picnic. The views are stunning and it's very peaceful and relaxing. There's nothing much there, just a car park and a pub, but that's all you need as it's the views that are the star here. The car park is £3, which you can get back at the pub if you spend £10.
J. L.
Was blustery weather conditions so we didn't venture far, but I can imagine on a clear day we'd have walked for a couple of hours. Didn't go in the pub.
P. M.
Beautiful views!!!It's a perfect place to enjoy with friends and family simply having a picnic or having a good time in a pub plus accommodation if you like to. Excellent service in the pub ,food &drinks well presented. Affordable car park price (£3/day).
E.
Beautiful views and great place for a hike but make sure you dress properly as it can be really cold and windy even on sunny days.
There are multiple trails of various difficulty to accommodate all sorts of hikers.
K. M.
Absolutely amazing view during our walk. This is a must do if you are nearby, the walks are not that hard. Our young children, age 5 and 7 did this and had no problem completing the 2hour walk around. Dogs are welcome here, but the owners don t always clean up, so watch your step.
W.
Incredible views for miles. Beautiful place.
K. K.
Splendid!
R. P.
Amazing views and a natural wonder of the Sussex Downs..... well worth a visit
L. R.
Beautiful views on a sunny day. Very busy but still plenty of room to sit on the grass.
H. C.
Amazing views and walks and the pub served a lovely lunch!
K. T.
Lovely day, clear and sunny skies, brisk wind so the sky was full of para-gliders all having a great time. Even the ice cream van was doing a bit of business. There was also a few vintage motorcycles parked overlooking the downs which were of great interest to me as that's my passion.
B. H.
Always worth a trip here on a nice day. Great views. I've been a couple of times - if you're flexible go on a non-holiday weekday as can get crowded parking-wise on nice holiday days. Options for walking and the open Downland make sure walks are never too busy. Use the pub at the top or walk to the village below for lunch/drinks.... although a bit of a hike back to the top after a pint or two !
S. K.
Good views. Quite a few people gathered to try and see comet tonight.
A. S.
Gorgeous views of the South Downs National Park.
Can get busy but we'll worth a visit. Loads of walks & the South Downs Way to keep cyclists & walkers busy.
Great for watching handgliders!!
C. W.
Absolutely stunning views across Sussex
K. F.
Amazing views when the weather is good!

The one thing that really, really annoyed me was a "dogwalker" who had 8 dogs and 2 leads, I assume they were crapping all over the place, and barking non stop it seemed. Had to go out of our way to avoid it all and not go to where we had wanted to, on account of them, well the Dogwalker really.
J. A.
A very impressive beautiful place, lovely views of the sea to the south and countryside to the north. Many good walks including the South Downs Way. Good sized car park (National Trust). Also an average pub/restaurant.
J. A.
Lovely for walks, views & quality family time. Social distancing was fine when we went & the ice cream van serves fabulous ice cream, sundaes & yummy watm drinks- a bit expensive but qs a lock down treat - it's perfect. Take a flask, mini picnic & a map & enjoy this beautiful space. If not a national trust member you have to pay for parking which is quite pricey but worth it, if you find a space. Enjoy in these winter months as in the summer it's so busy x
L.
Really lovely place.
V. P.
A really nice place for long walks. There didn't appear to be any public benches, so be sure to bring a picnic blanket if you're bringing your bringing your own food.
The car park charge can't be paid by credit card, so be sure to bring coins (£3) with you (notes are also not accepted). When I visited (Aug. 2019), the parking ticket had a extra coupon which offered a £3 discount when spending £10 at the on-site pub.
R. D.
Stunning views and great fir walking
D. M.
Amazing and beautiful place. Great for a hike or just go and sit and watch the time go by.
A. M.
Great place for something to eat and the views are amazing from here. There's plenty of walks and paths if you want to walk off your dinner after. Well worth a visit. Is does get really busy though and there's not a great deal of parking spaces.
K. E.
Lonely walks and great scenery. Recommend checking map on site to locate devil's grave. Please be aware on our visit in order to use the toilets you needef to be a paying customer at the onsite pub.
C.
There are just the best views from this place.£3 to park all day, or free if National Trust member. But there are several places to park for free by the side of the roads nearby. Follow the South Downs path for easiest route to and from the viewpoint. I like the info boards provided. Pub there but we didn't use it as we brought along a picnic.
R. L.
Very nice walks with some gorgeous views! There is a NT car park so if you're a member, you get that for freeee 🤩 easy to find and there is also a pub there but don't think it's open due to covid
V. O.
The photos do not do it justice. It's absolutely amazing to see in real life. It's a beautiful place to chill at sunset and maybe taking a little hike. Thank you John for showing us all the beautiful places on our past visit.
H. B.
Took the dog here. Lots of space for him to run around. He loves running through the long grass. Lots of other families with dogs running around. You can go for lunch at the pub first and then walk the dog leasurely like we did. Lovely views of the sea and the downs up there. Would recommend.
K. K.
Beautiful place. Ideal place for families
P. M.
Can be parked at the top where you pay National Trust parking prices or better still - park locally and walk uphill to the top. Scenic views over Brighton and also to the North Downs.
m. n.
Beautiful, serene and calm place... awesome for meditation. Can get very windy and cold at times.
T. M.
Lovely walk, we (family of 5, kids 10-15) did the purple walk after picnic lunch near the pub/car park. Took about 3 hours or so with a stop off at the farm cafe half way. Lots of route options so not repeating our walk back to the car. Drink at the pub upon our return hit the spot perfectly.
M. A.
Best place to chill if you're in Brighton.
K. G.
Photos could never do this place justice.
Sunset is sensational here. The walk down to Poynings is also beautiful.
N. C.
Hundreds of walks all over from the main car park - flat or hilly options. Great for dog walks but cattle are roaming fairly free all over. Also you can walk to several pubs downs on the north side of the downs (poynings, fulking) and of course the devils dyke pub at the main car park
G. S.
Fantastic scenic place for a walk, view and to relax.
D. R.
The best of views 😀 if you want to take it easy you can chill out on the hillside with a picnic and an ice cream. Visit the pub at the top - the food is ok. Get a drink and sit on the terrace. Explore the dyke itself: a steep and beautiful natural valley. Take one of the many paths and loop down to some of the surrounding villages such as Edburton and Poynings
A. H.
Absolutely stunning place for people who love to walk. There are basically unlimited walking paths. Devil’s Dyke itself is fantastic to walk and very imposing. There is no other place I rather be but in the pub after a long walk. Having a pint of cold beer and enjoying the view below makes this place so amazing. A must visit if you love to be out there. Five star!!!
G. A.
Great views. We were lucky with the weather. Nice place for picnics and walks. Free parking for NT members although we couldn't get the machine to scan our card.
J. M.
Awesome walk. We travelled along the top to start with due to the fog. As we walked through a forested area we descended to the valley floor. Stunning woodlands. The walk along the base of the valley was picturesque but tiring as we got up towards the car park. Our dog will sleep for hours now.
T. S.
A must place to visit if you're in Brighton area, wicked views over South Dawn's National Park
C. D.
Rolling hills, fresh air, great if the weather is on your side.
J. T.
Very beautiful and lovely to watch the para-gliders taking off
Á. H.
Great place to go hiking biking and dog walk. NO car space and road is very dangerous the way people leave their cars on the side of the road. Wind is perfect for all sport like paragliding.
M.
Beatiful sunsets can be appreciated from the Devils Dyke, plenty of trails for hikes family and dog friendly
O. E.
Impressive to see, deserve to be see. You feel small in front of nature
I.
Perfect for day out! Hilly walk around the field with beautiful scenery. Also great to have picnic there or there is country side pub with great food. Dogs should be on lead as there are animals grazing during the summer.
J. B.
Great for dog walking here, lots of hill climbing you can walk for miles and you can see for miles... Its the highest point in Sussex. There's generally always parking, you do have to pay to park but it's not too expensive here and the pub does pretty good food and has loads of seating. Also you can take dogs into the bar area. There's not much on the menu for vegetarians.
D. R.
Gorgeous beauty spot, normally fairly busy. Excellent pub, loos , ice cream van...long walks , shorts walks, it has it all. Bring a coat it's always windy
T.
Fantastic views of the surrounding countryside, whilst watching paragliders take to the sky.
Currently no refreshments (not even the well stocked ice-cream van).
No toilet facilities either.
K. B.
Beautiful views and countryside at this free National Trust location. It is great for walkers and popular with para gliders. It is easy to reach on public transport with the 77 bus from central Brighton bringing you to the car park.
I. M.
Amazing views over a huge distance, many miles of walks and varied scenery. You could spend a whole day up there and do try to catch the sunset on a clear day; stunning.
C. W.
Great place to chill and enjoy the view
J. C.
A beautiful scenic place to visit. Lots of parking. Great places to walk. Some walks are reasonably flat. But some are quite hilly so if you are not as young and as fit as you would like to be, be careful where you go. There is a nice place to eat and drink as well.
a. i.
This is a very beautiful place to visit. But you need to wear good footwear.
B. T.
I lived in Sussex for many years and used to love going up there in the early days. A recent visit back was a little disappointing as it is now in need of some TLC and a makeover. That said the staff were courteous and engaging. I wish them well for the future and hope that on my next visit it will be much improved in appearance :-)
j. a.
Beautiful place just a shame the pub is really really expensive
S. C.
Great place to go for a walk with great views. The car park is £2 for an hour, £3 for 2 hours and £4 (not sure how long that was for). If you don't need the cafe or ice cream van then you can park close by for free.
T. R.
Must come here when the weather is beautiful. What a sight to see, with the whole of Brighton seen in a distance with vast amounts of nature. Parking is £3 for all day, can also get a bus here. Pub/restaurant available if after a long stretch you do feel hungry. Can get very windy so would advise taking a light jacket.
M. M.
Great day outdoors, perfect views.
L. M.
Beautiful sunset
S. E.
Free car parking for National Trust members...if you take your card.
Great pub by the carpark and sensational views.
We were lucky enough to catch a beautiful sunset which was serene and a great way to end the day!
The youth hostel along the South Downs way did a fantastic two course meal for under £10!
M. L. (.
Parking is good and pretty cheap. Views are stunning around there and some great walks. The pub is okay, wasn't a big fan of the food. But definitely would revisit
J.
A hidden gem. The Duke itself is awesome. Just don't drop a football at the top cause it will roll along way down. The pub is nice. Saddlecombe farm is not far off and you can stand on top of the downs with long views in every direction.
F.
Really beautiful location and surprisingly close and easy to get to from central Brighton. Visited on my birthday.
I've lived in the Brighton & Hove area for over 4 years and somehow have never visited this iconic part of the city despite hearing mentioned often.
We used a number 77 bus to visit this location and it took under 20 minutes from Brighton, directly dropped us outside a pub which allowed me to have a quick birthday drink.
We used Geochaching to add purpose to our visit and it allowed us to visit some really nice secluded locations.
This is an area that has both heavy foot traffic and none all at the same time, it's very easy to find somewhere quiet to sit for a while. Highly recommended to anyone visiting the area, due to the elevation be mindful of the famous Brighton wind as it can be quite gusty.
A. C.
Spectacular views, nice pub , lots to see an walk.
L. F. C.
Such a picturesque landscape, with so many hiking trails around. Beautiful to see the sunrise and sunsets in the summer. Can also be a bit windy though 👌🏼
L. E.
Breathtaking views
L. R.
Went here on 1st August for a bit of astronomy and star gazing. Not much light pollution.
Z. S. S.
It's a place with great scenic beauty. Very windy , better visit in summers for long walks on the hills.
M. M.
Lovely area. But the pub needs a makeover. But this place has views to die for
s. w.
Good look building in and out side with great view all round. Lots of seating area. . Warm atmosphere. Good friendly staff.area from family and kids.but the prices are a bit heigh. For the drink. Like bottle of wine £25. And coffee £3.80. and solf drinks £4.00 plus. But over all very nice if you got a big wallet..
A. M.
Great place to escape the city wildness.
Z. A.
Good hiking spot near london
R. E.
Great place though get there early to get your spot in the car park and inside if you are eating. Fabulous views. Parking VEGAN menu available but you must ask for it. Vegan burger was not great, needed salsa or lettuce/tomato topping. Good beer and drinks selection.
J. A.
Views are priceless from the top, but it gets very windy and cold up there. The bar/barista section need more capacity to handle the orders that were coming in on the day we were there. Warm and cosy inside, could do with a fireplace. Should consider quick sandwiches and more warm drinks on the menu.
O.
That is a nice view on the top there. I also had my launch at the restaurant which is there. I had a burger, not the house special one. It was a relatively small burger for me but my colleague ordered the special burger and it was bigger than mine.
The place seemed to be a proper English restaurant with a 20th century feeling to it.
M. W.
Beautiful place, fresh air and greens. 30 min bus ride from Brighton high street.
M. G.
Beautiful views! Free parking for National Trust members (you will need to scan your membership card).
A. D.
Good place for some exercise and fresh air. There is also a good pub at the top of the road by the car park.
A. J.
Lovely green place for long walks on a hilly terrain. A good spot for star gazing too. One could also take bus route 77 if you're not driving. Away from city noise, a peaceful getaway.
