Reviews of Volk’s Electric Railway
D. C.
A great ride along Brighton beach on this super little Victorian railway. The open cars allow you to enjoy the views unobstructed and the staff are extremely helpful and full of enthusiasm.
E. T.
Lovely ride for the children. Unfortunately the Black Rock Station is closed thus only stopped in Halfway Station where we disembarked for the beach.
J. M.
Had a fun little ride from the Marina to Brighton, it simply brought us joy!
We also recommend reading the history at the Brighton stop and leaving a message there about your experience. Lovely staff too! We really enjoyed our visit and the trip.
J. V.
Great fun and full of memories too haven’t first had a ride in 1980 and now back with a discounted senior’s ticket. An iconic trip, practical and fun with kids. Full of history and now a bit of coastal regeneration too.
P. O.
Brighton's best kept secret. For some reason Brighton Council dont indicate where you catch the train nor when you arrive at Black Rock station for the Marina. There are no signs to tell you which way to go to the Marina when immediately getting off the train or where all the shops and restaurants are.
Brighton Council is more interested in cycle lanes than an electric train which has been running for nearly 140 years there.
Make it an essential visit. You and your kids will love it !!
S.
Great ride. Interesting to learn about the history in the ticket office. Nice walk up the beach and then a fun train home.
L. F.
Superb historical railway. Maintenance well on the way for opening in May 2021
M. R.
Loved it, brilliant to be able to travel along the seafront, let down by the marina which is an abomination to aesthetics, civil engineering and architecture, it needs knocking down and starting again, so buy a return ticket and stay on and go straight back, you won't be missing much.
M. D.
A piece of history not to be forgotten. Curbridge the maderia drive upgrades have shortened the track but still worth the ride along the beach. Shame it couldn't be extended further along the front.
S. P.
Lovely trip along the seafront on a piece of history
J. G.
A pleasant trundle along the beach, as well as being interesting for its historical significance as the world's oldest electric railway.
N. C.
Lovely old fashion way to travel from the marina to the pier. Very well maintained and presented.
C. G.
Lovely little seaside railway, great for kids to ride up and down the east end of Brighton beach. The railway route is lined with wild beach flowers and there are stations along the way. It can get very busy at sunny weekends but will be half empty on rainy days.
A. M.
It was a great little journey. Very good tourist attraction. Lovely view while on the train. Great customer service. Price it was ok not too expensive not too cheap, just right for tourist attraction. I would definitely use it again 😊
G. M.
Nice little rid down the front. We'll organised and run. Was reasonably priced.
J. B.
Great staff and nice little addition our trip. Perfect for getting to the mini golf half way up the beach.
r. j. r.
This fabulous railway has it all - charm,
history, and fun. Simple trips. The Marina
is a magnate, and this is a great way to get
there. Use it or lose it.
J. S.
Lovely experience, just as I remembered as a kid.
S. P.
They are only running end to end but it was a fun journey and not bad for £3.90 one way or £5 return for adults.
D. O.
A short but pleasant trip on this railway, carriages looked well restored final destination station could benefit from an overhaul also halfway point could do with reproduction station to make this a more appealing ride good views of the coastal area plus pier
L. M. o. H.
Great experience, I absolutely loved it, nice staff, cheap tickets and marvelous views.
J. B.
How can you not love it! The Volks train surroundings are being updated, just making the experience even better
G. G.
Magnus Volks, first person to have electric at home, three years later. Eugene's Burchill built the West Pier @ 1866
J. B.
Absolutely a must visit when visiting the beach. Certainly good for getting along the beach
A. H.
Cute train and reasonably priced. A nice way to get back to Brighton if you've been down to the marina.
E. C.
Lovely little train, highly recommend, staff were friendly and price was fair. I recommend the jungle crazy golf at halfway station over the pirate course by the pier. Much more interesting and less busy.
T. L.
A very nice ride along the seafront on the worlds first electric railway.
N. C. P.
A superb way to flit along the Brighton prom, whilst taking in the various sights of regeneration underway along the route. Even the recent mounds of gravel, strategically created to shield the naturist part of the beach, are an interesting sight. Great to see history kept and given useful context. Perhaps an ice-cream opportunity at the mid-point station would be of benefit?
J. R.
Great weekend for the mod 60's weekend, plenty of dancing and music 🎶 🎵
C. W.
Cute train ride to save your legs if you are tired. Love this history. Reasonably priced
Z. S.
Retro and cute, had a lovely date with my boyfriend on Saturday and we decided to go on here
T. S.
Fantastic! Just been on the Volk's Electric Railway, after it opened in early October 2017. There is now a new visitor centre by the Aquarium, and they are currently completing a new engine shed by Half Way station. It's a great way to take in Brighton's seafront, and on a historic railway. The second half of the line isn't open yet, but I understand it will do so in Easter 2018 when the engine shed is complete. You can quite easily walk from Black Rock station (end of the line) to the marina restaurants, although you do have to go through a rather unpleasant multistorey car park to get there.
A. P.
Slow and sad, poor girl's been through a lot. Still fun. No swimming pool.
P. S.
Impressive railway that is the oldest operating electric railway in the world.
A short (1,6 km) trip along the beech. Been in service since August 1883!
Make sure to get round-trip tickets and not only one-way if you don't wanna walk back along the beach. (There are ticket offices in both end stations though.) Not expensive either, It was only £3.70 for one-way and £4.80 for round-trip for an adult.
N. J.
A quirky enjoyable ride that made me wonder both how impressive it was that its lasted for over 130 years, and also why anyone would bother walking to the marina from the pier when you can go on the Volks railway. Kids also loved it once I bribed them with a trip to big Asdas.
C. K.
One of the most fun things I’ve ever done in Brighton!
G. G. W.
We are located in the new Visitors Centre & Ticket Hall of The famous Volk's Electric Railway. So please come and say 'hello' while looking at the history of this the worlds oldest running electric railway. Enjoy your visit and your trip!
R. W.
Fabulous little journey back and forth, amazing history and great friendly drivers. Well worth it. Made all the more great by the fabulous Phil, thank you.
S. M.
Brilliant attraction. Well worth a trip
G. I.
Saved a lot of shoe leather and muscle power in getting back to the Marina
S. “. T.
Lovely little seafront railway along Brighton Seafront. Well maintained. Friendly staff. Price is good for the ride, which ends at a fun playpark. Definitely worth a ride!
K. B.
Great little 15min train ride along the front to the Marina where you can get off and explore before returning. There is also a halfway stop but on this occasion we rode straight through.
C. H.
We traveled on the Volk’s Electric Railway (VER) Nice little return trip towards Brighton Marina it was a lovely day weather wise. Rattling along the track past sunbathing people on the beach with nice views. Price’s reasonable senior discount.
H. A.
Exceptional experience. It took us to that early time, around the 1880s. Loved it.
N. W.
This is a great experience and a great way to get from the pier to the marina to see some great boats ect. The marina has so much to see and do as well as the town. The railway is relaxing and great way to see some of Brighton.
T. G.
A great family train from Palace Pier to the Marina. Runs frequently. Very cute. Family tickets and senior tickets available, singles and returns available.
A. C.
This is Brighton history. You get to see more of Brighton, take in the fabulous views, go out to near the marina and at a nice pace. Kids will love this, it's not to be missed.
L. H.
My toddler loved this little train and it was very reasonable for a ride. The ticket lady was so friendly and the overall experience was very fun!
J. K.
First electric railway in the world and still running.
k.
Fun ride along sea front, with friendly helpful staff and cute mini museum inside ticket hall at Brighton marina.
M. Z.
Nice place for a long cycling along the beach
C.
Great little ride, something to do when visiting Brighton. Its been done up nicely and great for visiting the Marina.
T. M.
A lovely piece of history, the staff are very welcoming. I would highly recommend this attraction. Covid safe and the ride was smooth.
C. P.
The very first electric railway in the world built by Magnus volks a man way ahead of his time a great historic little railway a bit draughty and breezy on a windy day but worth it no shop at the terminus selling books about the railway and postcards so a little bit disappointed
A. V.
Iconic and historical rail line. Recently restored to the picnic.
Holds a tiny museum
Centre. So nice. I’m happy heritage like this is kept going and it’s a rewarding project for us all, locals and tourists. Children and grow ups love it ,
Specially in the summer it’s a great ride on the brightonian beach. If you curious about this stuff justos a bit more digging online and find amazing historical photos of these heritage railway!
H. E.
Really lovely trip with toddler, two stops at virtually deserted beaches, toddler said 'i really love this train Mumma, it is so beautiful'. Regular running times and reasonable pricing. Online info could do with improvement but seems to run every 15 - 30 minutes from 10.30 each day.
T. v. d. V.
My nephews enjoyed the ride! Helps the little ones legs between Jungle Rumble and the pier.
J. B.
No trip to Brighton would be complete without a trip on the Volk's Electric Railway.
Starting station is close to the Aquarium and Palace Pier.
You can choose to alight at either Halfway station or the third station by the Marina.
C. K.
If you love any kind of train you will enjoy a trip on this electric railway. Friendly staff and good value for money.
A. M.
Fantastic service the ride was lovely and peaceful, wonderful way to enjoy the Seafront without having to do the walk!
M. S.
Great little attraction.. 👍🚞
J. T.
Excellent little railway, more fun than the bus and perfect to save your feet when traveling to or from the Marina
K. P.
Lovely little train , used it several times from the seafront to the marina - loveky friendly staff
c. r.
what a great historic experience that is still relevant
H. E.
A lovely trip with my 2 year old grandson. Good price and friendly driver.
W. K.
Exceptionally professional barstaff serving countless drinks on a busy Saturday. Lovely place to sit down and have a drink.
C. D.
Awesome train on the seafront - fairly pricey but its a fun trip to the Marina (and back)
M. C.
Fun in its way. Nice little ride up and down. Got to sit upfront as I was solo, so that was a perk.
A. J.
Lovely pleasant ride to the marina
S. P.
Great little electric train, well worth a ride along the beach from the Palace pier to the marina.
M. T.
A unique experience which is a must try if your visiting the area. Recently the stations and work houses have been updated, I prefer the older myself but given the railway is over 130 years old a redo was inevitable.
T. E.
Just the train experience and lot of laugh
P. A.
Quaint little train running along the coast line from harbour to pier.
Definitely saved our legs on the way back, friendly staff made it a fun journey
C. F.
Great train ride from seafront to marina.. timings are good but bear in mind last one at 5.30
J. L.
Didnt actually gi on as we were out for a walk. But it looks good. Maybe next time.
C. A.
You come to Brighton, you should go on it just to say you had a ride on it, it's one of a kind, piece of history, still going.
S. S.
I love taking a ride along here on a warm summer's day, the cool air blowing in our faces, and very good value in my opinion.
P. D.
Great fun and a good way to get tired infants from the pier to the car park
K. B.
The railway is great to ride on and the staff are friendly .little ones love it too .
D. G.
Great fun. My father, John Goatcher, Seargent ex Air Forcea was, the driver back in the 70s I believe.
K. S.
Pricey and noisy way to get off your feet for a bit and take in the sea view
D.
When I was young I used to go on this twice a month and loved it. Now I go on there with my niece and she is just the same.
K. G.
Great little scenic railway.
Cuts out a long walk back to the car park
A. N.
It was a good experience and friendly staff
O. M.
If you've never done it before take this lovely little train which goes from just near Sea Life to close to the multiplex cinema and bowling alley. My kids loved it 🤩
L. J.
What a way to see the coast between brighton centre and the marina. Wonderful that this is still operating a joy!
A. R.
Great ride good views and beats walking all the way
R. A.
Here's a piece of Brighton history, a great little electric railway and now with the refurbished track, garage and visitor centre it's going to entertain and educate for many years to come.
C. R.
Staff were great. Especially our Lady driver who was able to give some history about the railway and the trams.
D. C.
Had a very nice trip, the lady driver on the way out was great and really interacted with our kids. On the way back.... the driver was not so good with the kids and seemed a bit off. Anyway all in all a nice thing to have in Brighton!
J. S.
Lovely little railway and extremely enthusiastic staff who clearly care a lot about the organisation.
J. A.
Lovely little train ride from Brighton pier to Black Rock next to Brighton Marina
n. r. H.
Ha ... I enjoy these open style trains. They bring out the CHILD in me !
I had a great time during the summer ...
S. C.
Its one of those things that you have to tick off when you go to Brighton and we ticked it off. Had it been a nicer day would have explored more.
W. M.
A lovely unique electric railway
M. K.
This place is excellent and I thoroughly recommend that you visit I went trying to get a train to go up to Scotland but unfortunately they said that the trains do not go to Scotland they only go up the hill and I said but I need a train that will take me to Scotland and they said well if you go up the hill then you can get off the train and then you can catch another train when you are at the top and I thought that was a very very reasonable thing to do and very useful so I got on the train and I had an excellent time I had a look around and it was very nice it does go up a very steep hill and I thought that perhaps I could walk down the hill but I thought I would not and I got the train up and I got the train down and I had a lovely day out
K.
Excellent ride on retro train. Good fun for kids and adults.
J. E.
Just magical. History at its best! Love it now we just need Queen Victoria to come down to the beach for a swim, in her grand carriage. Much more privacy,
S. E.
A great way to see the views of Brighton seafront! It's recently opened a visitor centre where you can learn about it's history before your journey.
R. S.

l. K.
Great little historic railway with friendly staff
K. Q.

S. E.
Great, especially if you want to visit the other side of Brighton next to the Marina, please note that they stop half way and once you arrive still requires to walk more 10min to the marina where you can find entertainment areas, restaurants & shopping areas. 3.80£ single or 4.30£ return
K. D.
Very nice. First rode this railway as a kid (50+years ago). So glad it's still going!
R. P.

Nice ride from Brighton beach to near the marina. A bit expensive.
J. P.
Lovely vintage railway running from Brighton marina to the pier every 15 mins. Perfect
R. B.
Short ride along a very picturesque seaside the Train itself is wonderful
A. R.
A lovely little train ride along the sea front.
J. T.
Opens an hour later than advertised, so don't get there early. They didn't have any change when they did finally open so getting ticks was unnecessarily complex. The ride was good fun.
W. N.
Nice and relaxing way to spend some time and see the Brighton seafront
L. T.
there were some great views from the station. at one point he put his foot in it. would definitely go here again. its truly a magical place
H.
The staff are very friendly. My 3 year old son love the train, we go there twice a month during the summer. this time, I had to fold up my 4 months old son's buggy, to get on the train, the staff was really helpful to help me carried it to get on the train. Thank you
D. S.
Great seaside ride! Very busy though. Quite reasonable prices
P. A.
It's one of those tick the box when visiting Brighton. Don't expect too much and you will enjoy the run along promenade especially during the summer
C. T.
Fab little train, cheap enough for a family if 4 and even the teenager didnt complain
A. W.
Nice little ride down to the marina, lady driver was lovely
D. R.
A bit pricey, probably would have been cheaper to order a taxi. Oldest electric railway in the world we just needed to experience it once.
A. M.
Nice ride along the beach with this beautiful historical railway.
L. M.

N. L.
Excellent for kids of all ages. Free parking at the marina. Five minutes walk to the terminus. Stop off half way for the putting golf and the small museum.
w. y.
Very friendly staffs! Kids enjoyed the ride and meeting with Santa.
M. H.
Well priced ride from the marina to the main seafront. Cheaper than a bus and more fun. Recommend for everyone
M.
This is the greatest electric railway in Brighton, without doubt. I only wish they would reintroduce the sea-going routes and the carriages on stilts.
C. L.
Wonderful little train! I would recommend this to anyone visiting Brighton.
M. A.
Didn't get the chance to ride the train as we got there too late. Maybe next time.
R. H.
1st electric railway adventure
D. H.
Excellent restoration - and saves your legs on the way back from Brighton Marina.
A. W.
Great day had by all of my family good for kids adults and even the golden oldies
C. N.
Great fun for the children and easy way to get to the Marina from the Pier.
M. L.
Great fun for the kids, and saved us a long walk in to town from the marina!
G. N.
Enjoyed the ride very much. Well maintained and clean all around.
L.
We had a nice return journey with a family ticket for 12.50 bought at the till some minutes before departure. You can spend some time at Marina or if you drop at halfway stop there are some activities for kids. The journey was pleasant so we felt like it had to last longer .
D. H.
Nice bit of history and great for kids to ride
J. B.
Amazing Victorian technology as the ancient train clatters through the points and the levers clank over. Like a very slow, non-alarming fairground ride. Views of the pebble beach and historic buildings that you can compare with the photos from the 19th century in the visitor centre.
J. B.
A charming way to take kids to the marina without schlepping along Madeira Drive.
B. j.
Lovely little journey down the seafront in Brighton. The halfway stop has cafe and a playground.
K. M.
Never open when I get there , tried all different times of day. Here's to the next time
i. m.
Noisey and fun , scruffy round the edges and in the middle but in a cool kind of way i have been quite a few times but it is an acquired taste and not for everyone , night time it's full ov young kids 18/30 doing what they do lol am sure weed and other stuff involved lol
k. m.
Quaint piece of history
E. E.
It is certainly good for transportation, but I would not recommend as a tourist highlight. In the small (very small) museum / waiting area there was a picture how the initial track was over the sea on a construction. That is not the case annymore. You mainly pass building sites. Bit use it if you are around and going to the Brighton Marina anyway.
B. M.
The station is a small exhibition centre with a lot of the interesting stories of the electric equipment and of course the rail. It is a good place for learning and enjoy, especially for the children to ride on the rail with fun.
W. C.
Quaint. An authentic detour back in time and refreshing detox from the seaside tat. But Black Rock so utterly derelict we found ourselves missing the arcades and candy floss.
C. D.
Incredible gem offered to the city. A must do in Brighton. Staff are just divine.
A. H.
A great and joyfully ride and really nice people who run it
L. B.
We travelled on a late October Tuesday which was overcast and not warm – not wishing to walk to the Marina we thought we would try the train as it appeared a more exciting option than the bus – despite it being half-term – we were the only passengers – going out we sat behind the driver in the open but on the return we took the opportunity to sit inside – during the journey you don’t really see much other than the sea but that is not the point as it is a different way to travel and should be on any seaside itinerary – thank you
G. B.
Good to see history kept alive, hts off to the team who keep this running.
H. R.
The experience was good until i the wind blew my sunglasses away
P. C.
Love it.
I. F.
Unique way of travelling along the seafront. Goes from the pier towards the Marina and back.
J. W. W.
Great railway, one of the oldest electric railways in the world. great bit of our heritage. use it to keep it alive for the next generations.
M. A.
A historic electric railway, its fun to board here specially with children
S. S.
Lovely and fun
Staff so polite and helpful.
s. L.
Well worth a visit and ride when your visiting Brighton
P. s.
They could do more to make it more welcoming by cleaning the place it runs through and advertising and decorating it expected more from the large investment given to them
A. L.
Amazing help and an easy way to get to the marina! 💖
K. “.
New volks building/museum is nice, with toilet and baby changing facilities.
S. M.
This was the best thing we did in Brighton ... especially after we could not access the “dog unfriendly” Pier.
The people on the Volks Electric Railway (VER) were so kind to our dog. We really enjoyed the trip. Good value too. It is a VERry good attraction in Brighton.
S. H.
Fun but short rail ride
B. E.
I first travelled on this railway over 60 years ago, when I was a child. It is great that it still runs! It runs between the road and the beach, so there are little pedestrian crossings with lights for access to the beach. It runs to two stations from the Aquarium - the Halfway station and then the Marina (in my day they called it Black Rock, and locals still do). The journey takes about 10 mins or so each way. You can break the journey at Halfway (children's playground) at at the Marina (walk to the Marina or just enjoy the view). It only runs in summer months and on special occasions outside that, so be sure to check before going there.
P. G.
Preserved early electric railway, along Brighton beech.
A. A.
Small gauge electric railway running along seafront. Working part of Brighton's history.
P. G.
So pleased the train is running again
M. W.
Great for people who like old trains
s. h.
Loved it!! Great little experience
J. P.
Enjoyed the short ride into Brighton. Very helpful
T. M.
An Brighton tradition - everyone who visits Brighton with children should definitely take the time to visit the Volks railway.
O. W.
Nice little train over looking the beach
J. “. P.
If you have come here on holiday this is a great way to see the sites the vintage railway takes you on ride for a mile along the sea front. Volk’s Electric Railway normally opens each year shortly before, or at Easter and will run until the END of October.
Trains start at 10.15am except on Mondays and Fridays when they start at 11.15am. Trains run every 15 minutes after starting, at half past, quarter to, on the hour and quarter past until the last train of the day. Last trains are at 5pm Monday to Friday and at 6pm on weekends and bank holidays. Train times are the starting times from the end stations, Aquarium Station and Black Rock (Marina) Station.
A journey from Aquarium Station to Black Rock (Marina) Station takes about 12 minutes in total. Allow 30 minutes for a return journey.
C. P.
It's really fun n good service
L. H.
My 3 year old loved it!
A. R.

Looks ok, pretty cool how you can ride down the beach.
M.
Every time I’m in Brighton I will always have a train ride on volk’s electric train. It takes you to the marina area which has nice restaurants and boat trips. The trains ride is around ever 10 minutes and about 10 minutes journey. It is fun both for adults and kids. Highly recommend.
M. T. (.
Fun. Recommended, for the grown-ups and the kids.
L. M.
As a family we have travelled on Volks Railway for many years. Today was the 1st time we have used it since it received funding and rejuvenating from the Heritage Lottery and many other partners, the mini museum at the pier end of the track was excellent and the staff were very helpful. We now have a dog who is also allowed to travel on the train and a child who has a disability, they give free ticket for the carer of the person with disability if you can provide proof such as DLA or Blue Badge.
Z. G.
Kids love the volks railway it's a great journey with amazing history
r. s.
I believe oldest electric railway any coast fun4all
S. N.
Great little treasure on Brighton seafront
I. L.
Pretty sure it's the oldest electric railway in Britain, but stand to be corrected
J. B.
It's a very nice experience.
T.
. Sorry, couldn't go for a ride
. To the external appearance, it should be nostalgic to many people?
R. K.

(Translated) We were on vacation in Brighton Marina for 2 weeks and took this historic train to Brighton Pier almost every day. Nice staff who enjoy their work and a lovingly restored train. At Half Station we sometimes got out to play mini golf when we were done, just into the next lane and on.

Nettes Personal mit spaß an der Arbeit und eine liebevoll restaurierte Bahn. An der Half Station sind wir manchmal ausgestiegen zum Minigolf spielen wenn wir fertig waren einfach in die nächste Bahn und weiter.
