Reviews of Bristol Cathedral

We walked in on spec on a filthy day and found ourselves in a beautiful, light and tranquil place.
When we showed interest, one of the friendly guides gave us a brief and perfectly-judged run-down of the key features of the ancient building and left us to roam.
Remarkable features are the side isle vaults being equal in height to that of the nave, and the superb chapter house.
What a glorious heritage the British cathedrals constitute! Bristol, new to us, is perhaps an underrated example.
The British tradition of highly trained, amateur (i.e. 'for the love of it') cathedral guides is surely a source of the national pride we need so much at this terrible time.

What a truly beautiful building. We received a warm welcome and very much enjoyed exploring. Definitely a very special cathedral, steeped in history.

A sprawling wonder in the heart of Bristol city. With so much to see inside this Cathedral, it's very helpful that you are given a map upon entering to find your way around. On top of some stunning architecture, there is a lovely garden there too with benches that are perfect for just sitting and taking in the peaceful atmosphere.

Loved this place. Updated memorial to people enslaved by others and "traded" by some of the Bristol merchants was poinant and next to the candles for prayers for Ukraine. Super building, amazing ceiling and relevant work going on. No pressure to pay anything. Open to all with a chatty friendly person to help you. In an excellent position on College Green, between the central library an the Marriott Hotel, opposite The Lord Mayor's Chapel and The Council Hall. Walking distance of the river, shops and The Hippodrome.

Recent Weekend trip to Bristol, sadly could only take in an hour of the awesome Cathedral, didn't get to see the Cloisters and would have liked more time to appreciate the beauty and history. Looks like another trip is planned next summer. Only downside was the cafe was closed..

Bristol Cathedral, the entire Cathedral of the Holy and Indivisible Trinity in Bristol, England. Founded in 1140 and consecrated in 1148 .
Very much beautiful place. I advise you to visit when you are in Bristol.

Nice experience taking photos 📸 inside of Cathedral. The organ was played which was a perfect compliment.

This is a historic building where a lot of time can be happily spent. The award winning garden is a joy with lovely hidden surprises. There are chapels and monuments of all ages with informative reading nearby. I should welcome mirrors above effigies to view the detail of the figures. Modern window and sculpture there and mediaeval chandelier. Wonderfully bright as a hall church, the building all the same height. Had nice refreshments in the cafe. The toilet twinned with Uganda. Also, poignantly where a visiting bishop came from, died as a result of defying Idi Amin. Beautiful wild flowergarden in front of this impressive building. A gem for Bristol visitors.
J. K.
Amazing place for a visit, free admission with a suggested donation. Great amount of history and a beautiful interior.
J. G.
Really nice cathedral. I liked the stained glass windows, especially large red one to the right of the main altar area. Internal roof is also spectacular. Free entry but sure donations would be welcome.
C. R.
Attended Evensong for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Absolutely wonderful experience.
The cloister and garden are beautiful and peaceful.

Cathedrals are always a must visit, and this one is pretty standard as cathedrals go- though larger than most. The architecture is still spectacular and the stainglass is very admirable. Definitely pop in if you are in the area.

An amazing building and lots of interesting memorials. Worth a visit if you’re in Bristol!

What a lovely beautiful building, although a much loved building used by its community for a cathedral it has a homely and comfortable feel to it. The volunteers were helpful and welcoming. The cafe was clean and tidy with tasty sandwiches and hot and cold drinks. They cater for lactose free as well. Just off the cafe is a garden an oasis of calm in a busy city space to sit and read and bask in the sun. It was a lovely experience. I'd go again.

Fortunate to visit the Cathedral during the Moon Installation.
I had witnessed so many installations of Art in london. But inside a cathedral is something special.
There are a lot of stories about this Cathedral and once you visit you can revive it.
Must visit if you are in Bristol.
K. W.
Beautiful cathedral from elder lady Chapel built 1300ish to more modern addition of large nave. Great guides and beautiful stained glass. Cloisters and cafe.
L. B.
A truly stunning cathedral. I came here during the late afternoon while it was quiet and I got to take in all the amazing sights of the cathedral. The gardens are absolutely beautiful as well, especially on a hot summer's day which was when I visited.
M. W.
A beautiful exhibition inside a beautiful building! On the entry you will be asked to put on a mask and sanitise your hands. There is a lot of volunteers inside that will be happy to answer all your questions. There is also space to just sit and reflect.

We'll worth visiting. The information provided is not too overwhelming and the building is beautiful, the roof and sheer scope of the nave impressive. Lots of history to absorb, including contrition over previous benefactors for the cathedral and their role in slavery. So history, both old and modern and some beautiful art work. Café and shop closed due to the storm.
P. H.
Abbey turned cathedral in 19th century - impressive nave & many smaller chapels. Relaxing gardens & nice café.
J. D.
Lovely Cathedral, looks good at night. Saw a string orchestra - great acoustics.
P. W.
Wonderful historic architecture in central Bristol - atmospheric cloisters and currently (during summer 2021) showing Luke Jerram artist - magnificent Museum of the Moon installation. Free entry, with donations encouraged of at least £5 per adult - and certainly worth it.
C. C.
Sensational installation of the Moon (!) and loads of craft activities for kids. Wonderful to see crowds of families enjoying this magical place. Garden is always a delight.
b. l.
It's a old and beautiful Church in Bristol.
You can see a lot of history and admire old architecture' style.
You also can pray in private or public act.
There is a small caffé that you can enjoy the good atm
P. K.
Not especially impressive from outside (compared to other English cathedrals) but full of interest inside, with fabric and furnishings from a wide date-rage, from Anglo-Saxon sculpture to 17th-century tomb effigies and and later memorials. Some wonderful medieval stained glass, and some horrible 20th-century stained glass. A door off teh cloister leads to a very pleasant garden.
莊.
No fee but you could donate if you'd like to 😊
The garden is beautiful, highly recommend to have a look 👍
T. N.
The Cathedral is stunning from outside and inside. Free entry but you can give donations if you like. Very peaceful inside. Outside there are some green spots where you can sit to chill or eat your lunch. Not a crowded place.
D.
Lucky to see the museum of the moon event taking place in the cathedral. Beautiful cathedral and the moon experience. Interesting to see the various facts dotted around too
S. T.
Beautiful building, very peaceful and enjoyable to view and read through.
D. G.
What a beautiful building. Went there for daughter's graduation the Cathedral added to the occasion.
M. S.
Amazing architecture. Definitely worth visiting.
I appreciate the cathedral's attempt to acknowledge its long and problematic history. It recognises its troubled connections with slave trade and plantation money.
M. A.
Absolutely beautiful
You can pay a donation for your visit we did
Spent over an hour wandering around taking photos
Lovely

Awesome place to visit. Free entry as well..
W. B.
Beautiful, absolutely stunning.
Why you wouldn’t visit is not understood, it’s an amazing building, steeped in history and gorgeous; without a charge, except for a small optional donation.
My only regret is that during my visit, there was no evensong or services which is always my favourite thing. Alas, I shall visit another time and be able to fully take in the full experience.
E. C.
It be a nice enough place of worship. It looks a bit like Notre Dame, so may be a fire hazard. I can't give five stars seeing as they be wanting to remove a memorial to myself. I deeply regret leaving money to the church; had I known 350 years earlier that my charitable gifts would be abused in this way, I would've blown all the cash on opium, ale and harlots. Oh well. Hindsight be a splendid thing. Here be my advice to mortals today - do not leave money in thine will to charity - spend it all on thineself. In 2322 ye may end up getting cancelled.
P.S the garden is nice. I smoked a pipe there.
S. C.
The goods
- Beautiful location, right in the middle of the city
- Easily accessible and connected with bus or private vehicle
- The architecture is awe inspiring, I went there multiple time just for the building
- Free entry unless there's a paid group tour
Improvement points
None actually
Advice - Go there in the noon if you want to see the cathedral for yourself. But do check the timings and days it is open.
L. 1.
Lovely cathedral, very quiet place away from the city sounds.
Only thing I'd like to see is there's a few statutes with Latin, would be nice if there was a translated sign close by.
Q. P.
Not as elegant as Sherborne but still impressive
u. s.
One of the oldest and bigger cathedrals in UK. Great architectural design and very strong structures. They still preserve the old structures, wood carvings and statues. Free entrance and there is a small cafe is inside. Many tombs are here which have been buried inside the cathedral.
H. J.
Architectural beauty!
Also, the welcome team was so friendly and informative 👍
I. J.
An oasis of calm.
Even if you're not a believer, this place is worth visiting for the architecture alone.
Alternatively you may be not be devout, but still worth visiting.
Please help support the cathedral as these places ain't cheap to run. There are contactless payment points conveniently located by the entrance and exit. Any donation gratefully received.
J. G.
Beautiful cathedral. (and coffee shop if you need a pitstop!)
M.
Beautiful Cathedral located in the heart of Bristol. It is free entry (donation box) there is a small shop and café located inside. The Cathedral is clean and well looked after, there are several separate chapels some that are designated for prayers only which is great. The brick work of the Cathedral is absolutely stunning and just amazing how it was ever built. The Cathedral has a small garden at the back.
J. W.
It was well worth to ring the bells here. There were so good to ring, especially the 6th of 8. Highly recommended ringing here if you are a church bell ringer.
P. H.
Such a wonderful place of worship.
We were greeted by a lovely lady and made to feel so welcome.
It's very beautiful inside.
High gothic vaulted ceilings ,lovely modern stain glass.
Very interesting to wander about and take photos.
A small cafe serving tea and home made cakes.
The gardens are small and well kept.
A beautiful Cathedral in the heart of Bristol.
D. R.
Beautiful piece of architecture.
P. G.
Such a lovely understated yet still strikingly beautiful Cathedral! Feels much more personal and intimate than larger more well known religious places! Well worth a visit and it's great it's free so you can go in any time and as many times as you like!

Bristol Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, is the Church of England cathedral in the city of Bristol, England. Founded in 1140 and consecrated in 1148, it was originally St Augustine's Abbey but after the Dissolution of the Monasteries it became in 1542 the seat of the newly created Bishop of Bristol and the cathedral of the new Diocese of Bristol. It is a Grade I listed building. Located on College Green, the cathedral has tall Gothic windows and pinnacled skyline. The eastern end is a hall church in which the aisles are the same height as the Choir and share the Lierne vaults. The late Norman chapter house, situated south of the transept, contains some of the first uses of pointed arches in England. In addition to the cathedral's architectural features, it contains several memorials and an historic organ. Little of the original stained glass remains with some being replaced in the Victorian era and further losses during the Bristol Blitz. Prior to the building of the main organ, the cathedral had a chair organ, which was built by Robert Taunton in 1662, and before that one built by Thomas Dallam in 1630. Bristol Cathedral was used as a location in the 1978 film The Medusa Touch under the guise of a fictional London place of worship called Minster Cathedral.

Free entrance, kind staff. The cathedral is quite big with a central big nave. We could see the choir of young girls practising and it was beautiful. The little garden on the back is relaxing and peaceful. I recommend a visit, it is worth it.
C. F. V.
Bristol is a nice city, particularly if you are fond of street graffiti, the home of the great Bansky. You can also wonder around the old streets and the cathedral is a must see. Be prepared to walk uphill too!
J. H.
Beautiful Cathedral !! Entrance is free but donations are welcomed. People are so lovely and helpful. The garden is really nice as well.
M. O.
Very nice cathedral which unusually has no charge, just boxes where you can give a donation. A large green outside where people were relaxing in the sun and having picnics.
P. s.
Nice cathedral with beautiful architecture. The stained glasses and tall arches provide a sense of opulence and grandeur. The only thing that probably lacks the classic touch are the chairs which look so out of place in the entire setting.
P. C.
Beautiful cathedral in Bristol. There is an area of green opposite where you can have lunch and admire the cathedral. On a busy day though there are many people about and sitting on the green, especially students, which can be a COVID risk (if you are cautionary about that) There are benches also.
N. B.
My stepsons graduation ceremony was held here in July. It was a beautiful day and the cathedral provided a perfect setting for graduation photos. The surrounding area was very picturesque.

HISTORY AND HERITAGE
Brief History
From the Twelfth Century this has been a place of daily prayer, and an extraordinary building, created for the glory of god.
Bristol Cathedral is one of England's great medieval churches. It originated as an Augustinian Abbey, founded c. 1140 by prominent local citizen, Robert Fitzharding, who became first Lord Berkeley. The transepts of the church date from this period, but its most vivid remains can be seen in the Chapter House and Abbey Gatehouse. The Chapter House is a stunning Romanesque gem dating from c. 1160, one of the most important buildings of its era in the country, with stone walls decorated with a series of intricate, patterned, carvings. It is still used for important community events and can be hired out for corporate entertaining and candlelit dinners - see more. The exquisite Elder Lady Chapel was added to the church in c.1220 and includes some beautiful features - watch out for the carvings of beasts playing at being people.
The main glory of the Cathedral is its east end, described by the famous architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner as 'superior to anything else built in England and indeed in Europe at the same time'. This is one of the finest examples in the world of a medieval 'hall church', with the vaulted ceilings in the nave, choir, and aisles all at the same height. This creates a lofty and light space with extraordinary vaults that seem to stand on tiptoe on little bridges; amazing 'starburst' recesses line the walls beneath, and some contain the tombs of the Berkeley family. For more information about the Berkeley Family, past and present, click here.
In the 1530s the medieval nave was being rebuilt, but it was never finished because Henry VIII dissolved the abbey in 1539. The buildings might have been lost at this point but Henry began to create a series of 'New Foundation' Cathedrals, and Bristol was included in 1542 - possibly due to successful lobbying from the citizens of the most important trading city after London. The church, like other cathedrals created at this time, was then rededicated, in this case to the Holy and Undivided Trinity. Other surviving features include the baroque organ casing, which houses the organ built by Renatus Harris in 1685.
For the next three hundred years the Cathedral functioned without a nave, but in 1868 noted architect, G.E. Street, created a fine replacement in a Gothic Revival design. The work was completed by J. L. Pearson who added the French Rayonnant-style west front with twin bell towers, and a magnificent series of furnishings which included a stone screen at the entrance to the choir, a reredos (or screen behind the high altar), and the pulpit. These were done in a grand and distinctive style in keeping with the original medieval features. Twentieth century enrichments include the organ, one of the finest in the country (sustantially dating to 1907), windows from the 1940s and 50s by Arnold Robinson, some commemorating the roles people played in war time, and the abstract window in the south choir aisle on the theme of the Trinity, designed by Keith New and installed in 1965.

The Cathedral's archives are held at the Bristol Archives office and can be viewed by the public. To visit, or for more information click here.

I have been to the cathedral multiple times now since I have lived in Bristol, and it's always in interesting thing to look at if passing by. I believe the Cathedral still holds active services (although I am not totally sure on this) and I had always intended to come down to one to experience the Cathedral actually in use. (Apologies if I am wrong on that point). Furthermore entry is free, and it's certainly one of the most prominent attractions in Bristol. Thank you to the people who put hard work into maintaining this asset, and best wishes in the future + Kind Regards, Alex.
S. A.
Very pretty and amazing acoustics. Has a cafe and some nice stained glass.

Saw the moon here - in the day time! Otherwise this is a traditional British cathedral with choir stalls and services with wonderful music.
M. R.
Beautiful The only cathedral in England where the isles are the same height as the nave? Don't miss the chapter house
T. W.
Absolutely beautiful, when I visited I believe there was an event or graduation being prepared for so I didn't get to see all around which was a shame. But from what I saw it was gorgeous
T. A.
Truly breathtaking inside and out, this Cathedral blew me away with its grandeur of history and culture!
I just wish I'd of visited on a day that did not have so many school day trips, as i wanted to immerse myself in an historical wonderland, but instead i had to keep my thoughts to myself until i left this outstanding building, as the noise was so overwhelming, very disappointing, as i wanted it to be a magical experience from the moment i step in, until the time i left.
Another downside is as soon as i arrived, i was made to feel uncomfortable that i was not paying to gain entry to this amazing work of art, by the lady who greeted me upon entry, that i felt obliged to hand over money out of courtesy for the privilege of gaining entry to something so beautiful, but isn't this a free cathedral with the option of donating?
I also felt watched the whole time i was near anything that required a donation, such as lighting a candle, i think i must of spent at least £10 in this brief trip that lasted less than an hour out of a time restraint, so very much worth it though, but it should still be by choice to donate or not surely?
G. H.
A delight to the eyes both outside and inside. We visited late in the day and the lighting inside provided such a calming sight. Best lighting I’ve seen in an old building.
M.
Beautiful cathedral with stunning architecture. Its a great sight right at college green which is beautiful place to just chill on a sunny day. Wonderful service at the Bristol cathedral!

It's astonishing. Quite worthy of a visit. It looks just as marvelous inside as it does from the outside. It is perserved really well, and the old architecture really makes it special to visit.
The craftsmanship required at the time to build this cathedral also emphasises the beauty of this location.
It's free to enter/visit the cathedral, so you should definitely give it a go if you travel to Bristol.
R. R.
Arguably one of the most interesting places of worship in the UK. So much to see you'll spend ages here without realising it. No pressure to pay admission fee so more that happy to visit the café and spend a bit.

Thanks Team

But the staff is rude..at 5 it's shuts down..we were praying and about to leave but they kept interrupting and didn't allow us to finish our prayers..behaved as if God is their personal property.. nor allowed us to attend the mass and we could see there were hardly any people inside..not even 20 to be precise.. very disappointed such people don't deserve so serve God

This is a beautiful place. I am a chorister in the cathedral and I have to work hard in it, but it is amazing. Its perfect for tourists, too. It is a huge building and includes a gift shop near the entrance. I am not particularly a christian, but not everyone goes on about believing in god, its more about being together; being part of the community.
Recommended.

Lovely cafe garden to sit in and enjoy a soup and coffee! Peaceful location in the centre of Bristol.
D. G.
Beautiful place to visit, so much going on :-)
b. c. s.
Really nice cathedral from the outside and inside. Very nice choir area. Well maintained.
R. M.
Lady who greeted us was very very knowledgeable about the history and architecture, lovely lady who made us feel warm and welcomed , such a shame that when we went into the garden a very very rude man told us to leave, pointing his finger at us ! People like that should not be customer facing
D. N.
Beautiful design and good history.
A place to worship and enjoy God atmosphere with possibility of grand inspirations by architecture.
b. t.
No Christmas tree as yet but maybe that's why they've closed from 12.30 today😞. Redcliffe much more interesting!!!
a. M.
This beautiful place is worth a visit..
G. R.
Very nice, free entry as well
K. B.
Well worth a visit, beautiful
Z. M.
Beautiful cathedral, step inside and you will be amazed. Worth visiting !
T. H.
It wouldn't make it into the top 10 most beautiful or impressive cathedrals in England (unlike nearby Wells, Salisbury, probably even Exeter), but it's impressive, and must be especially so for visitors coming from out of Europe.
J. S.
Great place to visit inside and out
C. B.
A place to have a little peace of calm away from the traffic in the city. To my surprise it was free entry and you could give a donation if you wished. It's only a small cathedral and may not be as grand as some but there's a lot of history there.
The cafe there looked really nice and you could have your meal in a court yard garden.
M. G.
Nice church with Greta choirs on Sunday!
P. G.
I went a couple of time to the Cathedral and this time was because they have this big and blue moon, I spent hours there just looking to the moon, so peaceful
R. P.
Strange place. All the scale of a cathedral, but somehow lacking that glory of the original medieval examples. Some very old parts, but the main body is more recent, and somehow it shows.
P. “. W.
Beautiful place, from what little I got to see in the short time we were there for a UWE graduation ceremony.
J. A.
Beautiful cathedral. Great little adventure/hunt the kids can do as well.
P. N.
Beautiful music warm welcome and addressing it's mixed history with honesty and humility. A sacred space in the heart of the City
Q. V.
The facade kind of reminds me of Notre Dame. This is a huge cathedral and not only the church, but the churchyard is beautiful.
P. C.
What a treasure. And its architectural relationship with the Norman gate and Central Library is unique. Lovely garden when the school kids aren't screaming. But please look after the land around it. And please do something interesting with that dead bit of land in front of the driveway that goes to the rear of the building.
E. T. R. L.
Magnificent building with a great welcome.
A. F.
Nice place to visit for some peace of mind and most of the places are walking distance
V. H.
I loved visiting this cathedral. The architecture is stunning inside and out and there's so much history to absorb. Some beautiful stained glass windows, interesting memorials and medieval tombs. I was particularly impressed with the craftsmanship of the stonework, especially the magnificent altarpiece. The staff and volunteers were very welcoming. While I was there the organist started playing, what a wonderful rich sound, quite an emotional experience listening to it as I wandered around. There's a café, toilets and a gift shop where I bought a good informative guidebook. An enjoyable and inspiring visit!
M. B.
Fantastic building, amazing architecture. The Cathedral choir were practicing on the day that we went... Wow. Made the experience even more emotional. Unfortunately couldn't take any photos of the inside. Well worth a visit, only 10-15minutes walk from the harbourside. Staff very helpful. Donations gratefully accepted. Light a candle 🕯️.
A. M.
Not one of the greats, but still well worth a visit to this very soon active-in-the-community cathedral. We enjoyed a beautiful evening worship service.
K. B.
A calm atmospheres, stuffs are so friendly.
N. K.
Best church building visit ever. This is a lovely place
R. M.
A beautiful cathedral and I like that there is no entrance fee like there is for some other cathedrals.
l. G.
Its an architectural orgasom i could spend all day looking at the intricacies of how this place has been built. Beautiful!
K. I.
Amazing Cathedral I love it!!!
S. Q.
The moon exhibition is well worth a look. This building has some unique features and worth a visit without the exhibition.
J. E.
Beautiful, lovely cafe and garden. Lots of interesting areas and features. Welcoming and wonderful.
J. S.
Like the works of Banksy then Bristol is the place you need to go.
L. M.
Definitely worth a visit, with free entry and the option of giving a donation it's a great attraction to pop into. The organ filled the cathedral with a grand noise and helped you to appreciate the history it had to offer. Gorgeous stain glass, intricate ceilings and beautiful flooring create a beautiful building for you to explore and feel peaceful in. It also housed a few exhibits that were really interesting to read. The lady welcomed us and gave us relevant information on the cathedral but also had information on other local places to visit.
C. M.
First visit. Beautiful building. Lots to see and explore. Lovely evening worship with an amazing visiting choir. A great place to spend an afternoon.
r. R.
Not a huge cathedral but well worth a visit. Lovely stained glass windows
G. T.
I loved that cathedral, once you in you could literally feel the history that this building has to offer
K. C.
Free to go in and walk around, just a donation box at the exit. Beautiful cathedral with a cafe and gardens
J. C.
Sense of peace and prayerfullness in an ancient building obviously still a place of worship today, more than a tourist attraction.
I. C.
A very nice cathedral with great history and architecture. Apart from the main hall, the cathdral also consists of a basement, garden, and a cafe. There are events and prayers held regularly throughout the week, and is definitely a good place to visit.
A. E.
Lovely light + peace and quiet. Step inside to get away from hustle and bustle of Bristol
A. M.
An impressively beautiful Cathedral in Bristol. It's classified as Norman Gothic/Gothic Revival. Highly recommended to take a tour of the interior as it's full of interesting details. Avoid weekend as it can get very crowded. First time I tried to get in it was closed for graduation ceremony, but managed to return next day. It's also worth exploring the surrounding buildings as well.

One of England’s hidden treasures. If you’re into medieval art and architecture, and you have an interest in abbeys and monasteries, this is a great place to visit.
The cathedral was built as the abbey church of an Augustinian monastery, and is a beautiful example of a medieval monastic church that survived the greed of Henry VIII and the destruction of the puritans. As it was never intended to be a cathedral, it is smaller than York, Lincoln, Salisbury etc. But this adds to its beauty and serenity.
Outside, the monastic gatehouse survives. Inside, the beautiful Chapter House is hidden away next to the church building, and is worth hunting out. It’s very typical of a medium sized abbey, and must be one of the few that survived so perfectly.
After visiting some English Heritage ruined abbeys, it’s great to visit a few of the abbey churches that survived the dissolution. Bristol Cathedral - in my mind - ranks as one of the most surprisingly well preserved ones. Sitting in the silent and peaceful Chapter House, you can easily feel what life was like for a medieval monk.
* The little gift shop is lovely, but it closes very early - sometimes at 3:30pm - which is a pity as it’s got some very nice things.
A. A.
A really inspiring place with Uber helpful staff.
The cafe is really excellent value and does lovely cakes and coffee!
E. S.
An absolute treasure of Bristol, such a beautiful place and the Cathedral also has an award winning garden which is beautiful!
J. M.
This place is astonishing inside and out. Ut the inside will definitely open your eyes to beauty and class love this place
C. C.
Impressive cathedral with more than 800 years of history. Free to enter (but you are encouraged gently to donate) this cathedral is as beautiful inside as it is out, so is worth an hour of your time to look inside at the details of the stained glass and sculptures. The rose window is especially beautiful.
A. G.
In my opinion, this is the most beautiful cathedral I've ever seen. It's stunning both inside and out. The employees (volunteers?) working inside were lovely and extremely helpful. Most cathedrals and historic places I've visited keep a watchful eye on me, with someone following me around, like I'm going to crash into things. It's embarrassing and condescending. That didn't happen here. Thank you!
There's a cafe but it's downstairs so I couldn't access it. They also have a free little fruit garden with a quince tree! How I wish it had been in bloom. The back entrance (where wheelchairs can enter) was very pretty and would be a nice place to have lunch or read. There were some unsavoury people hanging about back there, who were smoking and repeatedly spat on the ground. Very disrespectful but I don't know how they can avoid that.
You absolutely must go here if visiting Bristol , in fact it's a short walk/wheel from Temple Meads station. There's a small gift shop but I didn't have time to check it out.
Please, if you're able to, give them a generous donation.
S. W.
Museum of the Moon at Bristol cathedral is set in the most stunning venue for atmosphere and vividness.
B. A.
It is so beautiful inside, and it has a very nice caffe in the gardens.
J. H.
A beautiful building and a quiet refuge from the busy city. Lovely to walk around and visit the garden and café.
N. T.
Very old cathedral. Must visit
B. N.
Definitely worth a visit as it is one of the few buildings remaining from old Bristol. We did not appreciate how devastated Bristol was due the bombing in WW2. Entry is free as is guide information, but you can make a donation. The cafe is nice as is the small garden. Easily walked to from the Harbourside. Didn't go inside the Cathedral but it looked gorgeous in the warm May sunshine. The entrance is particularly impressive.
A. B.
Nice cathedral to have a wander into. Excellent especially when an organist is practicing. Really provides a lovely ambience. Do make a donation if you can.
C. C.
Such a beautiful place and The Moon exhibit was incredible. Gardens lovely too.
H. B.
A. V.
Built originally as the church of the Saint Augustine Abbey, Bristol Cathedral took almost 600 years to achieve its present form. The east end, superbly rebuilt in the Decorated style by Abbot Knowle, dates from between 1298 and 1330. The central tower and transepts were completed in the 16th century, and the nave and towered west facade are from the 19th century. The church was elevated to cathedral status in 1542.
M.
Very grand architecture, nice huge open paved area outside for photography. Golden 🦄 on top of adjacent building. Fountain and little river running past front of buildings opposite. Close to shops. No parking at the front. Parking behind near Aquarium building.
m. c.
An amazing building, even for the non churchy like me, there is loads to be admired.
The guide at the entrance was also very knowledgeably.
And they don't force you through the gift shop on the way out!
Did I mention its free to get in.
P. L.
Absolutely stunning Cathedral, had 7m moon hanging from the ceiling which added to the experience 😎
D. H.
Best place in town to have a feast on a low budget. Stuffed/Baked Potatoes and all the fixings will not leave you hungry for more. They also have the best Chocolate Brownie cake that you will ever find. You can tell it was all prepared with Love. If your in town you should visit.
T. L. F.
Peaceful, time for you and your thoughts!
D. S.
Beautiful building. Very big. Nice stained glass. Impressively large organ. Great for all your praying needs. If you're a fan of that sort of shizz.
S. B.
Very impressive exhibition of the moon.
D. N.
Had a lovely moon display this week. Free entree, lovely to walk around and very attentive staff.
Y. K.
Absolutely beautiful and a reasonable priced lunch
G. D.
When I entered the cathedral, I got warmly welcomed by the staff. She introduced me with the history of the cathedral in detail, which was inspiring. I also got a leaflet in my own language from her, which helps me get better understanding of the cathedral. The structure it self is amazing. Whether you look from the outside or you are inside the structure, you will be surprised by how clever and capable those ancient people were. It’s a place you must go when you visit Bristol.
K. T.
A really lovely place to go .it's beautiful
D. F.
Today met friends for lunch in the cafe. We sat in the sheltered, sunny cathedral garden where we ate simply prepared tasty jacket potatoes, having chosen from a variety of fillings. All very good value and well prepared and presented. The menu included soup and sandwiches, cakes etc. All fresh and quickly served. A great place for a quick cheap lunch and a privilege to eat in such beautiful surroundings. An inclusive Cathedral welcoming all by making no charge for entry. Cathedral shop very small compared to Exeter, Wells and Salisbury. Appropriately, all goods on sale reflect the sacred nature of the building. Tourist information available. Staff welcoming and polite.
g. k.
Nice cathedral. I was there when there was mass. It's impressive
I. F.
Beautiful, good cafe and very helpful volunteers
K. H.
Really lovely cathedral
s. b.
It was fantastic beautiful place
D. H.
Beautiful cathedral with a nice cafe, gift shop and toilets, the cathedral dates back to at least Norman times and is a must see if visiting Bristol, is close to college green which is a great place to stand and look as the church and the courtyard in front doesn't give a full view of the size
S. M.
Not religious, but when the science museum and the aquarium have about £15 entry fee and the cathedral only requires a voluntary small donation its amazingly good value. And if you like music they have lunchtime recitals.
P. B. K.
Lovely serene building. Such history!
C. D.
An amazing experience ❤️. there's toilets and in the garden you can enjoy a lovely café
p. p.
Amazing
A. B.
Fantastic old building. Lots to see. Good cafe and grounds to sit in.
S. A.
Lovely Cathedral in a lovely setting with the city hall behind. There is also a green infront of the Cathedral where you can sit and admire the views, a lot of people picnic there when the weather is nice.
H. A.
Went here for my wife's graduation ceremony. The catherdral is beautiful!
S. K.
The top sight in Bristol. Amazing structure, very informative visit.
T. N.
Not the most beautiful cathedral I've visited but still a calming place, like most cathedrals are.
J. L.
Nice cathedral which had a big moon in it when we visited. Staff were nice.
R. D.
Beautiful cathedral for a visit and a quiet time from the hustle and bustle of the city.
N. T.
Fabulous feeling, great windows and the organist was practising - wow, what a lovely sound, deep, reverberating and heart warming. Walk in come rain or shine to another world of calmness, loved it.
A. M. G.
Beautiful cathedral, stunning inside and outside. I'm not a religious person but I always enjoy the atmosphere of these old cathedrals full of stories and history.
A. C.
What an amazing place, one of the best Cathedrals we've seen.
S. G.
Fabulous cathedral and landmark in the heart of Bristol. Free to view inside and all the management asks is a small donation to help pay for running the cathedral and supporting the exhibitions running at the place; currently women photography from first world war which was very interesting as well as the cathedral itself.
a. t.
This cathedral is so nice.
M. W.
Beautiful very historical building. A warm welcome.
D. R.
Thrilled to see the status of Raja Rammohan Roy, He was from my city, Calcutta (Kolkata)
S. G.
Amazing place, sorry 😞 no photos as you can't take any.
D. H.
Small cathedral, but plenty of history and other interesting stuff inside.
W. A.
Definitely if you are in Bristol you have to see it.
O. B.
Amazing old cathedral 😍
E. K.
One of the first British cathedral which remembers me of Notre-Dame cathedral. Worth visiting if you ever step in Bristol
A. A.
If your about and have a free hour , id recommend you to have a peek . Marvellous place . Beautiful bit of work . 👏 👏 free entry and nice bit of green outside for a picnic 🧺. Amazing 🤩
D. F.
A really interesting building with some unique features for a cathedral and a lovely garden.
R. W.
Yesterday Open Doors Day offered the opportunity to look at the roof cavity and tower of Bristol Cathedral. It was awesome. The textiles, silverware and artefacts from the last cathedral in England to have a bellows powered organ reminded everyone what a unique asset Bristol Cathedral is. Worth a visit anytime.
K. K.
What a treasure. And its architectural relationship with the Norman gate and Central Library is unique. Lovely garden when the school kids aren't screaming.
K. D.
Great place to celebrate graduation!
S. O.
This cathedral is worth a visit. The stained glass windows are colourful and if you take the time you can find some quite old pieces in eye-level places.
M. B.
Beautiful cathedral. Most welcoming, beautifully preserved and indeed a perfect location to celebrate our daughter's graduation.
D. W.
A truly beautiful and calming place to be. I urge you to pop in at some point during the mayhem of Christmas shopping and let the peace and tranquillity wash over you. You may even get a sense of what Christmas is actually all about!
M. A.
Beautiful place of worship
S. C.
Had a walk around Bristol and definitely worth a visit, very old building and quite imposing, but great architecture and lots of history, few really quiet places where you can chill and reflect even if you’re not religious. Very central only 5 minutes from from the centre of Bristol.
C. H.
A beautiful building steeped in history. Should have visited sooner.
R. B.
Its orgins go back to 1140..it has been said that Bristol has a railway station that looks like a cathedral and a cathedral that looks like a railway station...and here it is... God's great engine shed...during the Bristol riots in 1832 when Bristol declared it's independence from the United kingdom..in the hope of a greater rising the mob burnt down the bishops palace leaving only the gate house which was defended with a great staff by the gate keeper and his wife..that's where they lived the rest was burnt to a crisp..
T. T.
Mix of medieval choir , central tower, transepts and superb Norman Chapter House, with fine 19th century nave and West End Towers. A very rare feature....the ceilings of the aisles rise to the same height as those of the Choir and Nave....an arrangement known as a "hall church:.
P. H.
We visited Luke Jerram's Moon at the Cathedral - it was stunning.
N. F.
Beautiful. They have a pamphlet at the door with very friendly ladies to answer any questions you may have. They appreciated the donation, which I hope was not because so few people give.
D. T.
Lovely and very interesting place to look around
J. B.
It's a beautiful old Cathedral
P. J.
Wonderful old cathedral. Very friendly staff.
C. J.
Nice Cathedral with lots of interesting history. I wouldn't rate it as highly as somewhere like Gloucester or Chester, but a good solid cathedral nonetheless.
A. R.
It's beautiful place to visit, you have all the information about on the entrance. After you see all you also can take a pause and drink something in the coffee shop inside it's just amazing
d. b.
Free entry which is a rarity for a cathedral these days. Some interesting history but not a lot to make it stand out from all the other cathedrals around Britain
M.
University Graduation held here. Fabulous building some restricted views but accoustics were good. Worth a visit if you are in Bristol.
A. A.
Welcomed by a very helpful lady who told us all we needed to know, impressive building
S. M.
Probably the largest building space in Bristol. Parts of the structure date back to the 12th century (towards the coffee shop). Interesting nuggets of history all through - especially worth reading some of the memorials on the wall. The garden that is to your left when you head to the coffee shop is worth a look - it's very sheltered and has some unusual plantings. There are sometimes lunchtime concerts (some free) and if there's anything major in an evening you can often spend a few minutes sitting in the nave whilst rehearsals happen. Be aware that the Cathedral Choir School next door uses the cathedral for major assemblies and you might be overwhelmed by 400 students.
I. G.
Beautiful building. Free to enter but donations obviously welcome. Nice Cafe and peaceful gardens as well.
R. L.
Awsum architecture, the mind boggles how they built these structures without modern equipment. We have great cathedrals back in Melbourne, but this was stunning.
L. R.
However did craftsmen achieve such wondrous carvings in wood and stone all those years ago? Don't miss the windows commemorating all the services in WW2.
O. A.
Gigantic. Beautiful architecture.
l. s.
3 Graduation ceremonies here in the past 3 years. What a privaliged place to receive your reward. A wonderful historic building
K. C.
Absolutely beautiful place with gorgeous interior I could be inside for hours looking at the beautiful stained glass and the monuments
S. P.
Great place for our daughters graduation
T. I.
Pretty and lots of history but Britain has many finer cathedrals overall. The chapter house and cloisters are great though.
V. H.
Entry is free but donations are recommended. There are beautiful stained glass windows, both old and modern.
H. C.
A peaceful and warm-hearted place. There are a few pieces of history dotted around the inside, however this was less of a tourist and more of a worshipper's cathedral.
m.
Nice and peaceful cathedral with a great interior.
D. B.
Lovely cathedral with a sweet little cemetery garden. and cafe. Thoroughly enjoyable.
J. B.
