Reviews of Clifton Suspension Bridge
L. H.
Amazing views! A must visit if ever in Bristol, you can spend hours taking in the beautiful scenery. Many details around you. With the observatory close by, and a tunnel leading to suspended balcony in the middle of the cliff.
The bridge itself is more than a 100 years old. With daily walking tours.
You can put your camera down, many details you can find around you while crossing and beautiful scenery.
It takes around 5 minutes going from one side to the other.
Unfortunately the Avon gorge below was nearly dry when we visited August 2022 because of the heatwave, but still the views were beautiful.
The Clifton area close by with the Mall gardens and many authentic restaurants. A nice place to send part of your day and end with having a meal in on of those restaurants.
Note: the bridge has a £1 pound toll if crossing in a car.
J.
Absolutely beautiful suspension bridge. We definitely recommend you have a look if you’re in Bristol.
The bridge is easy accessible, we went via a bus which took about 20 minutes from the city centre. You can also drive (I did see some parking), and the bridge is next to a lovely park so you can walk around if you’re in the area.
Of course this area gets busy when it’s tourist season but it’s such an amazing view, I would definitely recommend you stopping by.
Best time to go would be just before sunset, because then you can see the bridge during the day and then watch as it turns its lights on at night.
There’s also a good selection of bars and pubs within a 10 minute walk, so you can make an evening of it.
K. T.
It's not very often I get the chance to walk around the bridge but it's really enjoyable every time I do.
The engineering is impressive the views are amazing.
You really get to experience how big this bridge is when walking across.
The walkways are not very wide so if in a group could make it difficult to pass by if stopped on the bridge.
There is a visitor center a short walk from the bridge.
I really enjoyed visiting the bridge and hope to visit again soon.
P. S.
A beautiful place to visit.. go in evening time the view will be beautiful.
Take a walk in the bridge on both sides and enjoy the views..
* 1 pound toll free for cars. You can pay via cc or dc
* Street Parking slots available near that bridges
* Lot of benches to sit and relax
* I don't see any light settings on normal days
A. P.
Stunning suspension Bridge! The view is breathtaking either you look the bring from down or up. Cross the bridge walking is such and incredible experience. With car there is a toll to pay that's 1£, but totally worth it. Waiting the sunset there will give you the chance to take some very amazing pics.
B. K.
Clifton Suspension Bridge is the most popular place in Bristol and the seventh most popular place for photos in the whole of the United Kingdom. The most popular photo spot is the base of the western tower on the Clifton side of the bridge. Make sure you get your photograph in front of the best view, whether that’s at sunrise or sunset. You can also visit the Giant Cave where you can get a spectacular view.
H. P.
Great views! Free to walk either way and just £1 to drive over. The paths are quite narrow so it helps if people pay attention to the one-way signs. Free parking nearby as well. Very close to the Clifton Observatory and cave.
Perfect for geologists/rock enthusiasts because you can see some brilliant examples of limestone beds! If you get close enough to the rocks further west by the main road going beneath the bridge then you might be able to see some little fossils too!
C. E.
If you visit Bristol you have to go to the Clifton Bridge. We visited early in the morning and found some parking spots near the bridge. You can get 30 minutes free parking, which is barely enough if you cross on foot and take your time to admire the view. Some really nice cafes very close.
S. S.
Beautiful bridge to walk around and see the beauty of it's build. We always park around for free, walk to the bridge, get some ice cream on the walk back from the bridge and then visit the cave and the play area for the kids which is all amazing for a family day out. Amazing views and stunning scenery.
J. P.
Great little visitor centre (free to enter, donations welcome) with lots of fascinating information on the bridge. Some interactive displays. Free to walk across the bridge, and only £1 to drive over (paid by card only). Only downside, no visitor car park. There is street parking nearby, at £1 per hour by cash or pay by app.
V. A.
Very popular tourist place. Nothing really special, but the construction is impressive. Bristol city is visible from here as well. It costs £1 to drive through 4 tons restricted. Free for pedestrians.
T. W. F. T. W.
It's just a bridge! But when lit up at dusk it is breathtaking. Great views high over the river and road below. A short walking distance to the observatory for a elevated view down to the bridge.
Н. Б.
The Clifton Suspension Bridge over the River Avon near the city of Bristol, Great Britain, was built in 1836-1864 and is one of the main attractions of the city and the country. The bridge was put into operation on December 8, 1864. Its total length is 230 meters, including a span of about 190 meters over the gorge of the River Avon, through which it is thrown.
Very picturesque place. I recommend to visit here to everyone who comes to Bristol.
C. F.
Loved it. We parked at the Ashton Court Estate. The parking I think was £1.80 for the day. Bargain. Walked through the estate down to the Clifton suspension bridge. Took about 15 to 20 mins casual walking. The views from the bridge are stunning. The bridge is stunning. Once you have walked over the bridge you can walk upto the observatory grounds where there’s some spectacular views of the bridge. And to add to it there was an ice cream van and a coffee truck at one end of the bridge. 👍all in. A very enjoyable visit. Bridge is free to walk across. Think it’s £1 to drive a car over. But that’s a waste of visiting. The walk is the better option.
P. B.
In my opinion one of the most photographed iconic bridges in the world. The one way system for pedestrians is very organised and useful. A visitor’s centre with free entry is well run friendly and informative.
W. A.
A superior view of Bristol, a mix between old and new! A must see location while roaming around Bristol! Make sure you walk all the way along the bridge since the view differs on every single point.
C. J.
A beautiful bridge to walk over on a quiet morning. You can only admire the engineering and the views of Bristol are stunning. Plenty of benches to sit and admire the bridge.
A. B.
Clifton Suspension Bridge is the most popular place in Bristol. Its over the river Avon near to Bristol city. Beautiful natural view. There is a cave next to the bridge to enjoy. Parking is not so available.
S. K.
Perfect spot, nice place to go and enjoy evening, we were so lucky to get the best weather with nice view for the city. Climbing up the hill next to it is good price for this views. Up there is a lot of grass, benches and some cafe.
C. S.
Such an elegant bridge with an amazing view of the city. This is the first ever suspension bridge and it has been maintained incredibly up to day!! A must visit place in Bristol. The view is breathtaking and the bridge is very safe. I will surely be back for a day time view!
N. J.
Very nice and worth a visit. Specially viewing it from Observatory side with setting sun and lighting up slowly was the best part in my visit. Sure a recommendation if you are visiting Bristol.
D. M.
One of my most favourite places! The masterpiece of Bristol. Stunning views no matter what time of day or weather conditions. So much history. Makes me a very proud Bristolian
S. H.
AmazIng piece of history and the condition it is still in and how well used and vital part of the local infrastructure. The views are incredible and the sheer challenge of building it back then with just a rope to shimmy along is quite mind boggling. A must visit if you’re in the area!
S. Y.
Nice view at night, free to walk by but £1 to drive through.
You can arrange for a tour of the bridge Wednesdays to Saturdays.
Bristol was surprisingly very busy and many large buildings.
B. L.
Looks amazing from a distance and couldn't believe how high it was. There's a toll charge of £1 for the car to cross.very narrow but great views from there.was lucky enough to park up near the clifton rock railway.great to see ashame its not in use.great piece of history to come across
J. S.
Amazing views, time well spent.
Pro top - Try to plan your visit during sunset time you will take amazing pictures.
A. K. P.
The first thing you get to hear about Bristol as soon as you move here! Took a walk to the bridge when we were in the area after a visit to the Bristol Zoo on its closing day. We took bus number 8 (towards Bristol Zoo) from the city centre to first reach the zoo and then walked towards the bridge from there.
Although it was a windy day, the decision definitely paid off (the stroll from the bus stop to the bridge is also lovely). There are bench seats overlooking the bridge and one could spend an hour or so sitting there taking in the vastness of the view in front them. We couldn't visit the observatory as it was past its closing time.
I'm not giving five stars because there were no public toilets in the area.
L. B.
Fantastic viewpoint overlooking the gorge and Bridge. Small cafe serving drinks and toasties. Lots of street parking in the area, no charges on a weekend.
P. B.
Very interesting architecture. It’s a symbol of Bristol so it’s a must see during a trip in the city. Highly recommended also the visitors centre nearby. Amazing view of the Avon river
L. S.
Well, well... One of the best places in town. A free visit, on which you can enjoy great views of the bridge, being easy or night. The bad thing in here, for sure is the lack of toilet. Unfortunately, could not find a single public toilet nearby, and witnessed many people peeing under the trees. What a shame, but given the circumstances I cannot blame them all I'm afraid. To any end, this is a worthy visit.
A. C.
Beautiful location for a truly stunning piece of engineering history. Free to walk across with refreshments at both ends. Great views from observatory.
K. S.
The view is amazing, there is a cafè as well so you could use it as a potential date destination. If you decide to use the cave, it's even better, it could be scary to some or adventurous to others. Still a great spot for dates or relaxation (if you enjoy heights like I do)
m. r.
I loved ! They have beautiful views you can walking in the bridge for free if you go in the card you need to paid one pound to past the bridge. Very recommended if you visit Bristol
K. G.
Stunning views. Amazing bridge with great history and very calming place. I feel in love with this bridge and could stay here for hours.
A. O.
As one of the most visited attractions in Bristol it shouldn't be missed. If you are ever in Bristol is worth to go and see one of Brunels wonders, the Clifton Suspension bridge which is a Grade l listed building. Is free to walk or cycle but there is £1.00 toll charge if you're driving which you can pay by card. Is open all year round 24/7 and you can get some amazing views from there. On the day of my visit there was only one pathway open which it has made it a bit overcrowded.
Built in 1835 and engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel which it was his first bridge and has taken 33 years to complete and it was the beggining of his great engineering career.
v. r.
Amazing feat of engineering that has stood the test of time, great views on a clear day and a great place to spend a while, still a toll bridge so you have to pay £1 each way and will have to park up the road if you want to go there by car, worth a visit if you’re in Bristol though shows how good we were back in the day when we built things over here
R. D.
Really beautiful area. It's short walk up a little hill to some benches to see and enjoy the views of Clifton. The surrounding Clifton village area is quaint and cosy. Very colourful and peaceful!
J. F.
A bristol staple great views in any direction when walking across. Go up to the observatory for an incredible view of the bridge and bristol in the distance.
I. V.
Must visit while you're in Bristol! Great view from above the Bridge, you can grab a coffe / drink/Snack for the near by café,or can bring you snacks and have a picnic there!
R. J.
Lovely views, you can either drive across the bridge for £1 but would recommend parking up and taking a walk around. There is street parking nearby with pay machines. You can walk around the bridge and take in the views and can also take a walk up the hill nearby which has a cafe / toilets at the top and benches to sit and relax 😌
M. Z.
Nice one. By car charges applied £1, but it worse so - because you will cut the half way. Better to check in advance. Bridge on its own is so cool. The view is amazing, and it is definitely worse to come when you are in Bristol.
N. R.
Beautiful bridge! A must see if you are visiting Bristol. At night when the lights come on, it looks magnificent. There is a hilly area next to the bridge where you can view the entire bridge from an elevated spot.
Parking is hard to get though in that area.
K. a.
Beautiful views and a lovely hiking trail . walk down from Bristol Temple Meads tube station and you will enjoy your walk. In fact you will.see almost all Bristol 😄. There was group of naked men protesting and that was quite uncomfortable for families. I understand the freedom of expression but this kind of stunt should be ban on public places.
A. G.
In Bristol South West of England. Is one of the oldest bridge constructed in the south west. To cross the bridge you need to pay a little fee of £1 one pound and they only accept card payment. If you have a card with contact lenses is a straight forward crossing.
A. A.
A must see at night if you’re around the area, especially for the first time. One way system is in place which is great for following the covid regulations and traffic management. This place is stunning at night, all of the bridge is lit up at night and I will highly recommend you give yourself at least 40-50 mins to go and see the bridge from both footpaths. Not only would you see the bridge, but this also provides you with great views of the city as it’s high up.
F. K. I.
Really nice view of the bridge from the park above.
The bridge itself is quite a sight to see, the immense build structure is quite impressive to look at in first person.
The park on top of the hill is quite nice too as it'd a nice picnic spot and it the overlooking view of the bridge and the surrounding area is a nice spot for taking the pictures.
L.
Amazing views, one of the most stunning places in the UK. Walking up the hill from the river below was a nice challenge, good to walk off expanding pandemic waistlines. The view from the bridge made me dizzy as the side walls are see through and I was tempted to look down, but I enjoyed the view from the safety of the roads around the bridge. The bridge itself a marvelous feat of civil engineering.
A. F.
Very impressive bridge from the 1850s built by Brunel. There is a museum portraying it's history, including initial proposals for the bridge, and it's troubled story of how it was constructed. A must see. The museum is free and there is accessible entry and toilets.
D. M.
This is one of the iconic jewels of bristol. The bridge was built in 1864 and kept well maintained till date. There is a single lane drive way for each side and walk ways on both edges. For the car you have to pay a £1 charge to use the bridge and payment is card only.
The bridge is designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, sadly Brunel himself couldn't see the bridge as he passed away in 1859. One can get a best view of the bridge from Clifton Observatory. Clifton Observatory is a former mill, now used as an observatory, located on Clifton Down, close to the Clifton Suspension Bridge. A popular place to admire the Clifton bridge.
J. R.
I love it here.
Iconic British landmark surrounded by a stunning historic suburb. It might not be the biggest but it's great to see when the light is right.... The park and surrounding area is well worth a slow walk, good places nearby to eat and drink.
If you're in the area you should take the detour.
D. S.
Lovely place. I love England for place like this one. Worthy see Worthy come back there.
E. B.
It's a must see. Especially if you can catch it with the lights on in the evenings. We went before sunset so it was nice to see it in both ways. Quote busy and very windy as it's very high but if you go in Bristol it is something you wanna see.
G. B.
Breathtaking view and enjoyed every bit while walking and looking down both to and fro, stunning engineering, free to walk and £1 toll for cars, walk-able from near by car park used ringo. Visit Clifton observatory to get end to end view of the bridge.
S. B.
Amazing feat of engineering in such good condition. Worth a walk across for the views and a climb to the observatory to see it from a little farther away.
I. G.
Surprised that it’s still in use for vehicular traffic. Cycles are free. Great views of it from below and of the Avon Gorge from above.
s. h.
What an amazing piece of engineering. Still in use by car and on foot. Great views in all directions.
S. W.
What a cracking day out, my kids learned about Brunel as a person and his influence on the industrial revolution. The visitor centre was excellent and staff wonderfully helpful and informative. Only gripe was the observatory was closed due to a wedding
B. D.
Amazing engineering 99 percent original material beautiful beautiful views of the river and the estuary. Well worth the visit .
B. S.
So worth the walk up for the view. It was a boiling hot day, but we're glad we took the walk. What a fantastic piece of engineering and of local history. Great view from the observatory.
H.
Stunning view and engineering marvel! Great to walk around and enjoy the view of the gorge.
C. j. S.
Great bridge, and have tourist centers here ,can know about this bridge history, you should come visit if you in Bristol!
N. H.
Fascinating history and incredibly build amazing views, We went to the museum there also whilst passing.
M. B.
Great views, great bridge. Parking available at visitor centre or for £1 on local streets at the west side of the bridge.
S. C.
Such a beautiful place and such a lovely view. You have to pay a tax if you want to drive on it but on foot it is really nice.
F. B.
The clifton suspension bridge looks amazing from this view point. One of the best spots to visit in bristol.
S. A.
Nice and gorgeous view
Not very crowded
Sunset was beautiful 🤩
Went there two days on a row 😅
A.
We stopped here on our way to Cornwall. Beautiful view all around. Great experience.
A. J. B.
Felt like experiencing the Brit version of Golden gate bridge. Stunning view point and well maintained historical landmark.
L. W.
Well kept, beautiful vistas, definitely worth a look if you've never been
B. G.
I love great architecture so this was on the bucket list. Just spectacular. Photos are from near it and on it.
R. G.
Nice, a must see location, just take bus number 8 from temple meads station and go there
E. T.
The infamous suspension bridge! I mean, it actually is very impressive both from a distance and closer up - a must see when in Bristol
M. W.
Difficult to park within walking distance of the bridge. Clifton Downs is probably the best bet, but it's all uphill from there. There are e-scooters to rent if you're brave enough. The bridge is always packed with tourists, and there always seems to be traffic on it, so it is not as photo-friendly as you might hope, but the views of the Avon Gorge and the Observatory are stunning.
J. R.
Beautiful bird's eye view of Bristol. Make sure to be properly dressed as it's cold especially in December. Must visit in Bristol.
A. L.
Amazing view of bridge .most recognisable structures in Bristol.there’s £1 toll for vehicles, free for pedestrians and cyclists.
N. S.
Brunel's masterpiece set in a fantastic gorge I absolutely loved it. Take the tour it's well worth it you find out things you can't see from just walking across it. I even went inside the structure! Amazing!!
S. M. A. S.
This was the main attraction during my short visit in Bristol. We went there by bus no. 8 which passes near the Clifton village. We were amazed to see the height and the natural beauty surrounding the bridge. This 1500 tons iron bridge opened in 1864 which is on the river Avon and linked Bristol with North Somerset. It takes £1 for every vehicle crossing the bridge but free for pedestrians. We were lucky to find the weather perfect for the visit and truely, the bridge looked stunning from nearby Clifton Observatory. There is cave under the Observatory (pay for) which enables anyone to see the beauty of the bridge and surroundings from middle point of the bridge and ground. There is a small playground nearby Clifton village which is also good and my son enjoyed it after visiting the bridge. I must say, we are very fortunate to come and see this distinctive engineering landmark of the UK. We enjoyed every bit of this visit.
G. W.
Great view of the Bridge from Clifton Observatory, walking across is a must!
T. W.
Totally amazing. Viewed from the tower and the Giants Cave. Recommend both but be aware 130 steps down to the Cave!
S. S.
A really beautiful place. I didn't expect it to be as picturesque as it was well worth a visit if you are in Bristol
I. T.
Amazing views and a free visitor centre (donations welcome) that provides background. And there are toilets!
E.
Every time we cross this bridge we always stop to either look over the river Avon or at how the bridge has been made. The visitor centre is free to attend, has lots of fantastic historical information and fun facts.
J. W. C. K.
Visited the suspension bridge for the first time. Bike racks available at the entrance to the bridge. Cyclist do not need to pay for crossing the bridge if you are interested. There is no parking slots available at the entrance and if you approach the bridge the road is narrow and you cannot turn around. Cars pay a pound to cross the bridge. Excellent scenary and is a must visit site if you are traveling to Bristol.
Z.
Best day trip , enjoy Clifton suspension Bridge, don't forget to take slide 🛝 on the natural stones(hill) it quite slippery be careful 😂 enjoy nice town on electric scooter 🛴 and then enjoy Halal wok & wok on high street.
C.
Brilliant view and amazing piece of engineering!
Well worth visit either just to admire or walk across as well!
I. G.
I was just down in Bath when I got suggested to visit Bristol as well. I quickly looked up what I can see in this gorgeous city and the Clifton Suspension Bridge was the first thing that popped up. After a walk up the hill I was amazed by the amazing view. Such a beautiful place wit ha little restaurant/coffee shop on the hill.
T. B.
Better view in Clifton observatory, don’t forget to go Giant’s Cave. Not difficult to find street parking nearby.
L. “. C.
Beautiful panoramic suspension bridge. One iconic landmark to pass by in Bristol
S. B.
An unbelievable feat of achievement! Built with horses, men and sweat and tears! The height and terrain is stunning!
g. f.
Go to Hill by observatory for the best views.
We got there as it was getting dark ..bridge looked great
T. H.
The dilemma. Take the M5 or visit Bristol on the way home?
Bristol won and what a treat it was, a city steeped in history with the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge a highly recommended place to visit 👍👍👍
F. C.
The beautiful Clifton Suspension Bridge is synonymous with Bristol. An iconic 19th century landmark engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it has both history and great beauty. The essential place to visit in Bristol
E. T.
Unique experience for us, worth the effort to make a round trip over here!
G. S.
Well worth a visit when in Bristol - has a one way walking footpath that goes over it (that I was unaware of)
K. H.
A must visit location in Bristol. If the weather is good the experience is even better. Great views from all around the area. Lovely green spaces for a picnic.
T. J. T.
This is an absolutely breathtaking spot. The photo was taken at the observatory in Bristol and local custom is that visitors slide down the side of the rocky steep sides overlooking the bridge. We did not do this as I think I might break my neck but definitely a wonderful place to visit.
J. L.
Absolutely stunning bridge with gorgeous scenery, have driven past and under the bridge a few times but today I got to walk across and go up to the observatory, I definitely recommend visiting Clifton if your in Bristol.
Z. S.
Beautiful bridge and lovely view, definitely worth a visit. You can have a coffee or a snack up at the café near the observatory or sit on the grass and enjoy the view.
A.
I enjoyed seeing the bridge but parking was ridiculous. Basically, there is none - you have to find a spot on one of the side roads. And it's not cheap. If they made this more clear then it wouldn't be that bad because you'd know what to expect. So if you're prepared for that then I'm sure you'll enjoy the brilliant engineering of the bridge and the stunning views.
T. A.
Interesting old historical bridge with lovely views. The museum and information centre is worth a visit. Costs £1 in the car to cross, and parking is metered £1 for up to an hour, we were lucky got space only a couple of minutes of walk away.
H. S.
Great scenery. Location was not that far. Highly recommended.
R. M.
Amazing views. You need to go towards the north end if coming from the south side. And as you exit the bridge, go straight and take the first left and you can park there. There is a park and observatory on the top. Its a 5/10 minute walk and the view is breathtaking. So peaceful. ( to cross the bridge you need to pay £1 toll which is card/contactless only). But worth it completely.
Y. R.
Breathtaking views of Bristol. It costs £1 to cross each way so make sure you have change but I’m sure you can do contactless now too. You can also walk up the small hill to the observatory to just sit and watch the view of the bridge from various angles. Sooo peaceful and serene. Be mindful that when walking on the bridge the path is quite narrow and there’s a one way system. All in all you MUST NOT miss then when visiting Bristol and I wish she had time to stay and watch the sunset!
C. H.
After 15+ years visiting my husband's family in nearby Somerset, we took the kids to the suspension bridge and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The bridge itself is beautiful and the views are totally stunning. We had to park about 10 minutes away but it was an easy walk and there were plenty of places to rest once we got there. Can't wait to go back on our next visit.
N. M.
Simply excellent. Great views and an impressive structure. IKB working his magic once again to deliver the infrastructure we, as a modern day society, take for granted and don't think twice about.
Very much a worth a visit if you are in Bristol. The little gift shop and museum (free) is also very good.
B. W.
Unable to cross due to being on a tour bus which was too heavy. Never the less got a great viewing place and took a great photo
B. L.
When I visited this bridge, it was about to get dark and there was a magnificent view. I was very impressed and enjoyed the view.
W. H. L.
Great location to have a stunning overviews of Bristol. However, parking space is relatively limited. £1 toll is requested and card only

Great experience.. To cross the bridge it is 1£ (one way) can pay by card (contactless) and cash - before entering the bridge there is machine so u can pay there.
Parking nearby - street car parks available nearby but limited spaces else one side has a side road where you can park free (i left it there :P) 0.2-0.3 mile walk from there
Nearby there is a walking trail to a view from the top which is amazing ..dont miss it
N. K.
Must check-in place in Clifton, Bristol. Happy place with no crowd in the mornings and having lot of places to pose.
K. A. R.
View of the suspension bridge from the park side, must visit and enjoy the beautiful view
N. A.
Civil engineering at it’s best. Cross this bridge westbound from Clifton to stroll through Leigh Woods.
M. D. S.
Very pretty location...next to a huge park!! Having a sculpture exhibition for born free.
T. K. D.
breathtaking views.
Nice spot for photo shoot, hiking in the cave and absolute treat for a trip.
A. G.
Amazing views on that amazing bridge! Thanks to the genius minded Brunel who designed it!
It's a must visit place,,
You can park your car nearby and walk. You can get better view of the bridge from the Clifton camp.
T. T. T.
Incredible views over the area of Somerset. Nice view points available. Wonderful architectural design! There is a £1 toll for vehicles which I don’t mind paying especially for the nice views. Footpaths ok the bridge too so you can walk over it if you wish.
G. C.
It's easy to pass through Bristol and miss this majestic attraction. A short bridge but elevated into the heavens, we took a short walk down it at night after visiting the observatory. Safe to cross but don't look down. A real gem, worth the view.
H. S.
A must-see for Bristol. A big climb from Bristol centre, so be prepared to work for for views, or hire a Voi e-scooter and power your way up to the hills!
Cultural aspect of your visit to Bristol ✔
T. C.
I mean, a bridge is a bridge right. Divorced of any any historical context you would probably not be far wrong. But it is a very historically important bridge and still looks great and has amazing views. For a bit related history visit the nearby Clifton Observatory where pioneer photography coincided with the bridge building.
P. J.
Wonderful suspension bridge in a beautiful location. Buit with metal, the technology they have used in that time is amazing. View from the top of the bridge is astonishing.
Y. M.
I love this bridge, I'm speechless, it was breathtaking. I have drove across the bridge, £1 tolls, contactles payment only (for cars) I have parked"; in the other side in one off road then walked the bridge across and climbed the hill where the views are AMAZING! It is so beautiful and relaxing looking from the top, also there is some grass and benches to sit and relax, perfect for picnics
R. R. A.
Beautiful bridge with a cool view of the river and the gorge
S. C.
Love Clifton suspension bridge, great place to walk (day and night) with great views
G. M.
Lovely park with a stunning view of the gorge and the bridge. Good walking and activities at the top for those who want to explore the cave or get a coffee. Worth the long climb uphill.
S. W.
Great piece of engineering to walk across. Recommend the walk down to the cave view. The steps are very steep though. Not for the elderly or infirm or those scared of heights.
t. p.
Great views of the bridge and a nice dog walk around the grounds. Unfortunately no access to the building for dogs, but we were aware of this before we visited.
Little cafe round the back of the visitor centre was dog friendly and served an amazing panini and great coffee.
M. G.
A must visit if you are in Bristol. No actual car park but you can find spaces in the nearby residential areas; we parked on Bannerleigh Road. There is a visitor centre but requires prebooking with current covid rules otherwise it is pay on the door. You can walk across the bridge and enjoy magnificent views of the gorge and river and marvel and the amazing engineering and historic bridge construction.
R. C.
It’s not special but a why-not place to go.
The grassy space is beautiful in summer time. No wonder it’s a place for wedding.
The tower is another tourist part providing 2 more angle to watch the bridge. A little higher level and from a cave. Really not special. 5 pounds for head.
A. F.
Very nice place, excellent views 🫶🏻🥰
R. F.
Great walk (it’s free) with great view! Love it!
H. N.
The bridge is well maintained. Beautiful photograph can be taken on both sides of bridge. However, parking is bit difficult nearby. People of the town are very helpful.
F. B.
Great views! If you ever get a chance to visit the vaults they are incredible to see. They were a forgotten not really recorded until they were rediscovered by lifting a paving slab to find a mighty hole that led to a labyrinth of tubes and vaults.
G. R.
We love the suspension bridge - great views, lovely green spaces nearby, and a fantastic park.
D. B.
Beautiful views. A lovely area.
M. M.
Absolutely stunning! Highly recommend a trip to see this bridge.
M. A.
An amazing architecture and lots of interesting flora and fauna around - with an endemic species only growing there! We also saw two perigee falcons circling beneath us! There is a lot to see and do with a playground and a cafe as well....
R. L.
Definitely worth the visit, just remember that if you're taking a scooter you'll need to push up the hill and if you suffer from vertigo you might want to stick to dry land on either side. Great views though! 👀
L. M. (. Y. L.
A beautiful view in any weather. A lot of viewing points from different perspectives and a nice green area with plenty of benches to rest in.
Nearby is a cafe and the Clifton observatory.
You can see across the river and down to the road below.
R. P.
If you like civil engineering, this is a very fine example. The visitor centre has some interesting history. The views of the gorge are great.
Of course, if all you want is to cross the gorge then for a reasonable toll, efficiently paid by contactless, it does its job as well as when it was new.
G. B.
Marvel of modern architecture. The view from observatory is amazing.
P.
Been here a few times and every time it looks great no matter what, I really love the view over Bristol the scenery gives me the shivers. I definitely recommend anyone who loves nature to come over and look at the beautiful architecture.
A. Y.
Nice bridge, great views, can walk across it and admire the scenery
W. R.
What a construction marvel! Each time I walk on this bridge, I can't help but wonder how this fit was achieved in those early years. Amazing views over the riff, train tracks and landscape. Picturesque. Breathtaking. Marvellous. Must see to feel it.
R. P.
OMG 🔥Amazing view, it’s a must!
P.
We took an evening stroll along this amazing bridge....wow it's just like new! Great views either side, look out for the observatory on top of the hill for another great walk.
A. E.
Loved it. For the views and the walk up the hill, it's something to to for free, (come early on a Sunday, parking on the stree is free on a Sunday! Or pay with ringgo app). It cost £1 to go over bridge in car (card payment only), and free to walk over. We came is November, dodged the showers, wrapped up warm, thoroughly enjoyed the views.
J. W.
Awe inspiring and the exhibition at the visitor centre was really interesting
V. L.
Beautiful bridge, especially during the sunset 🌅
L.
Brilliant place to visit, Clifton Suspension Bridge is impressive structure. It was designed in 1830 by Isambard. My favourite place in Bristol!
A. T.
Very nice bridge. We parked close by and walked across the bridge to take in the view. Stunning views of the greenery and the traffic below. Did not realize how high up we was until we drove back down and could see it from the bottom. Remarkable. A must visit on your trip to Bristol.
S. C.
Nice bridge, but the constant flow of cars ruins a bit the experience
N. M.
Very good place to visit and show kids how suspension bridge working. There is a watch tower kind of uphill. From there you can get a awesome view.
A. M.
An engineering marvel for its age (completed in 1864 I think). Wonderful views from the bridge and from the area around the observatory (worth a visit itself) on top of the hill on the Clifton side of the bridge.
P. S.
What can you say, it's a bridge that crosses the River Avon.
However it can offer great views down over Clifton and Bristol City centre in the distance. On the Clifton side there's access to the Observatory (open 10 - 5) and the Giant's Cave (about a third the way down the cliff face).
As a visitor be careful on approach in a car if you are just planning to walk across. If you misjudge it you'll be committed to crossing as there are no turning places in the last 100 metres. It's another way to enjoy the crossing and at a price of £1 each way (currently you'll need a contactless card) it's not too expensive and the money goes to the bridge's upkeep.
B. C.
A must see if visiting Bristol and you’re interested in engineering. £1 toll for cars but free for pedestrians.
S. S.
Beautiful place and great architecture.
S. K.
It's great the only problem is we couldn't find anywhere to park
N. R.
One of the historical places, people should visit, is the £1 toll charge for one time crossing the bridge, which is extremely cheap. I can see some reviews complaining about £1, the money goes for the maintenance. These days people want everything for free. Parkings are free on Sundays and the views from the bridge are phenomenal. Highly recommend anyone to visit the site.
W. B.
A beautiful bridge and of course, a must when visiting Bristol!
I viewed from up the hill and also walked along, amazing for pictures. What a breathtaking piece of engineering!
The social distancing measures were also very well executed, one side for walking one way, the other for returning. The only unfortunate thing, there were large metal gates put around the viewing platforms, making it a lot harder to get lovely pictures.
Nevertheless was great to view!
R. S.
Quite tight when driving across for 2 lanes of traffic but breath taking
I. M. M.
Been there last year in September and loved the view. For 1£ it's definitely worth the stop and to spend few minutes to admire the city and the views surrounding the bridge. I loved going at dawn rather then daylight.
L. K.
Beautiful views and walks in the area. It's also a nice experience to see the landscape and the bridge captured by the camera obscure in the tower up hills.
S. R.
Beautiful Victorian suspension bridge designed by renowned Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. With spectacular views along the Avon valley. It's free for passengers & cyclists with a £1 toll for motorists.
E. B.
Quite pretty, view is amazing.
V. V.
Its a toll gate. £1 for an entry
If you are in the Bristol area, dont miss this. One heck of a view from the top.
I. J.
Located up the rock, so if on foot you need to do a good fitness excercize. If on car, there are parking lots, but very busy, could luckily find one. View deserves that! Check The Lookout Lentern for it, or Observatory on top. walk along the bridge, one line system for pedestrians. For cars toll is 1 pound. Google maps can say the bridge is closed, not at all.
K. H.
I’ve always wanted to visit this bridge for ages and ages. My goodness I was not disappointed!! An amazing feat of engineering; I do love bridges. The nearest to me is the Humber Bridge, but this bridge beats it! Glorious views of Bristol too. I had such a great time walking across and then driving across it. £1 for the toll fare, not bad is it? Will be back to see it again!!
S. A.
Amazing place and stunning views. I will definitely go there again. Isambard Brunel was a great engineer and it’s exciting to see his contribution to the engineering field
D. G.
Amazing to cross this iconic bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
My only criticism is the main viewpoint, with the information plaque, now has a limited view of the bridge as it is largely obscured by the mature trees.
A. K.
The view from the hill next to the suspension bridge is really nice with a few benches and plenty of grass for people to sit or even have a picnic
E. V.
It is an iconic landmark when you visit Bristol. Awesome experience crossing the bridge and taking wonderful pictures.
J. W.
Sublime. A 'must-visit' when you go to Bristol, day or night. Stunning views of the city. Highly recommend
A. S.
Very scerene place with beautiful view!
J. P.
We were lucky to have found off the road parking in the Clifton area right next to the bridge. There is a road immediately to the left in a residential area which has plenty of free parking so it was a few minutes walk across to take in the views. The visitors centre is worth a visit to read the history about the area and how the bridge was built. It's ideal for children so they have an understanding about the history about the bridge.
There is a walk that can be done behind the bridge that takes you up the hill so you can view the bridge and the surrounding areas in all its glory.
F. A.
Amazing view. Eye catching views on both sides of bridge specially on a bright sunny day (luckily we got)
If you are visiting Bristol, it is must visit attraction and it is not far from city center. You can easily spend an hour or more before going to Observatory.
P. C.
Lovely place for relaxing day.
E. W.
A must-see! We visited in the evening so unfortunately the visitor centre was closed. Parked in a nearby street & walked across. The bridge looks stunning in the dark. Constant traffic on bridge & lots of other pedestrians. Great views of bridge from the other side.
J. R.
If you want to enjoy the full moon, this is the perfect place
m. h.
I proposed to my late wife Dawnie who passed away last may , it was 31 years ago since that time and it’s our special place we’re we found love and always will be our special place xx❤️❤️❤️
M. D.
It's a beautiful scenic bridge. Cars need to pay toll to cross this bridge. Where as. People can cross through bridge on sideways for free. The walk on the Bridge offers amazing view across deep valey and River. I could view beautiful Sunset 🌅 when I visited this bridge in the evening. The bridge would be looking awsome with beautiful nights in the night.. Thogh I have not visited the bridge in the night Yet. The work for this bride was started long back somewhere in 1836.....but due to fund issue work stopped and the bridge was completed in 1986. It's a must visit of you are visiting Bristol. And do not forget to visit an Obersavatory that's just round the corner of the Bridge.
M. S.
Stunning views from the bridge. You can walk on both sides and drive through for 20p or something of that sort. There is a toilet on one end and there are a couple of attractions nearby. One of them is the Clifton Observatory with a cave that opens onto a cliff face; the other the buildings around with their beautiful balconies.
M. K.
Awesome Breathtaking scenery, Great Suspension Bridge, Great experience removes stress and more motivation when you’re surrounded by plants, water and other natural elements, cleanliness is poor as mud skidding, no right signs and poor lighting, but nice Treking Adventure, Life feels like relief stressed out Busy Life .
u. s.
Really great views from the suspension bridge and sorrounding places. Its really very high and well designed indeed. It has a long history of around 155 years. There is a £1 toll charge when you travel by car each time you cross the bridge.
D. S.
This is worth a visit if your in the Bristol area, the views are amazing. The bridge can be walked across and you can also drive across but there's a toll for car's. I would recommend walking up to the observatory. It could do with a car park for tourists and the public toilets at the bridge are badly needing updated.
M. C.
Really beautiful bridge.
Parking near by, you can walk to the bridge with a nice view point if it’s a nice day deffo take a picnic!
You can also walk on the bridge
Really amazing views from all angles
J. M.
As bridges go, it's pretty impressive. Would recommend to check it out if you have spare time in Bristol.
S. S.
Nice bridge providing neat vistas on both side. Ideal during the sun set and sunrise time to get nice images. Recommended to cover the stretch by walk. Ensure you also see the observatory which is on the cliff nearby for getting image of the entire bridge and the vista on the right side (moving towards Bristol).
J. B.
Spectacular setting for an Isambard Kingdom Brunel classic. Free to walk or take your bicycle over though no cycling on the foot way!
A. A.
Great view of the surrounding area from the bridge
D. M. W.
Monumental And Historical. Everyday ambience, That word, Ambience Exudes For all to enjoy the Air, their Health and Quiet, A Place to chill, dogs of all Varietys. Am I imagining that the brisk air brings an Air of delightful people who reveal in, Again this Wonderful Monumental Historical Place. I leave you all to decide. One capurement of a Runner, one of many as the Sunset. I say no more. But definitely worth taking a Chance to Visit Bristol for so much to absord on A Day out or holiday as and when possible after Covid Lock down relaxes it's rules. Please Stay safe, Above all, RESPECT GUIDELINES & hopefully we all can combat this to enjoy summer here.
S. M.
Amazing view 😍 ..it's really incredible architecture pice of art . I strongly recommend everybody should go and see it .
M. S.
It's pretty self explanatory. It's an amazing bridge. If you're in Bristol and have never been to the bridge then you really should. the Clifton observatory is a 1-minute walk from the bridge and is currently serving takeaway ice cream and hot and cold drinks. There are benches overlooking the bridge and overlooking the gorge, and open green areas to sit and relax. I always enjoy bringing a book here and sitting reading, or listening to music. It is also an ideal place for a picnic.
B. E.
The most brilliant view! I would've loved to go to the observatory but it was closed when we arrived. On a sunny clear day you can see really far. Well done Brunel! Also take a peek at the unique flowers only found in Bristol.
S. A.
We accidentally drove under this gorgeous bridge and decided to walk around. Even on typical British weather the view was great. Little coffee booth at the other end of the bridge made the chilly day better! View from Observatory is a must!
T. J.
Nice run over the bridge watching the traffic down below.
S. P.
Absolutely beautiful suspension bridge. We definitely recommend you have a look if you’re in Bristol
L. M.
Lovely place to get a great view of Bristol. We went around sunset, there were others around but it was pretty peaceful. We walked up the hill behind the bridge which have a great view. Along the bridge are safety railings so there isn't a very good view but there's a view of the city, gorgeous rock faces and forests all around. Definitely worth a visit!
P. H.
The view was amazing, I would recommend you take a walk across the suspension bridge its breath taking.
T. P.
Drove across it. Walked across it. Walked all around it taking photographs. This for me is the most memorable place in Bristol and amazing from any angle.
S. K.
There are two ways by bus to reach the the bridge. I would suggest you to try both (to and fro). One line goes via the city uphill to certain distance, and then you walk your way up crossing beautiful cosy cafes. The other way is from the other end of the bridge, you walk less and you get a wholesome view of the Bristol waterfront skyline on your way. Do visit the observatory area near the Clifton bridge to get a lovely view of the bridge itself. Worth visiting on a sunny day for a clear view.
O. S.
Lovely place and definitely a landmark to visit while in Bristol. The best view is from observatory on the hill during sunset.
H. O.
Amazing art of Engineering! Nice place to hang out for couple of hours or more depending on what you are planning to do. Perfect place to read a book in the park or simple spend time with family. Good for walking.
Nearby Clifton village is full of variety of bars & restaurants.
Parking is normally a challenge, but if you keep patrolling the area around, you will be lucky to find one. Mostly residential area so a bit tough on weekends but easy on weekdays.
B. C.
Went to Cabot tower. The views from there are really breathtaking.
Passed that way many times ,but haven't really looked sinceI was a child. Take my advice go and look.
G. M.
My bf was freaking out bc of the heights but I think it’s really cool
T. Y. C.
Not too many people were there that day, so I was left with ample walking space. For some reason, the emerald patches seem to complete the picture of this architecture. You can also go up slope to the Observatory Café for a more refreshing view of this bridge.
Easily accessible by bus, may need to walk for a few minutes.
A. E.
Great bridge with a ton of history within an amazing location. Bars, restaurants, shops all withing walking distance.
The best part though, are the views, simply stunning.
If you're in the Clifton or Bristol area, take at least 30 minutes just to admire this feat of engineering.
n.
Excellent place to visit in the very posh side of Bristol. Very scenic with beautiful views and nice walks. If you own a Bentley, Jaguar or a Ferrari you'll fit in just fine. But you might stand out a bit if you turn up in an old Peugeot or ford fiesta. Lol.
D. L.
Beautiful spot with great views on all sides. Especially spectacular at sunset.
However, be aware that their restrictions imposed on the bridge in the light of covid mean pedestrians are limited to which side they walk across. There have been metal barriers placed at the open areas of each side and any pedestrians stopping to admire the view, take photos or take a rest will be shouted at to keep moving..
K. H.
A must see while in Bristol. However, If you get vertigo easily, don’t walk across the bridge on a windy day!
Worth the trip to see it!
A. H. S.
This 150 years old suspension bridge is one of the most visited and photographed iconic site in Bristol. It is Constructed on Avon River at Avon gorge. It's small but true engineering marvel. It has a clifton observatory on one side to give an awesome view of bridge and gorge.
A. R.
By far an amazing place to visit if you visit or pass by Bristol. The view is amazing. There is a £1.00 toll charge which you can pay by card or cash if passing through. There's free parking approx 5 mins on either sides of the bridge.
There's a small pathway made to get to the top and view the bridge from afar. There's also a small cafe there which you can purchase water and snacks from.
A. L.
As a local we do not always appreciate what is on our doorstep, and I have crossed this great bridge many a time on walks in and around Bristol. Pedestrians and cyclists are free and there is a charge for cars (hence a toll bridge)
You can walk over both sides, with a good view of the gorge on one side and the road system on the other side with the old bond warehouses
The bridge is run by a trust and has to rely on tolls to help pay for the costs of this great Bristol icon!!
The visitor centre is FREE and is on the Leigh Woods side
They have recently replaced the toll booths which look good
Free toilets on the Clifton side
Great views of the bridge can also be seen when you come in on the train from the south and looks great in winter when it is lite
S. A.
Great place for an outing, beautiful views from the bridge, from the observatory or from near the castle. There is a cafe also for a quick nibble. Probably one of the best places to take your visitors from outside Bristol.
P. W.
Wonderful bridge, well worth a visit. We drove over and returned over the bridge, and then parked on road at rear of the Observatory. Great views from the Observatory and enjoyed a stroll around Clifton.
J. D.
From the viewpoint you can get a great view of the city. There's also a nice little museum about the bridge with a lot of information. If you're into bridges this one is highly recommended.
B. Q.
An iconic bridge that is synonymous with Bristol. Superb views over the Avon Gorge and into the heart of Bristol. Very well worth the effort to walk there and back again. The bridge authority has set up a sensible and well defined one way system, over on one side and back on the other.
Sadly our walk today was spoilt by a plethora of Covid precaution ignoring students.
A.
Such an iconic bridge
A. A.
Wonderful views and a must while in Bristol. Easy walk and even easier if driving - the toll fee is just £1 and we learned that over 10,000 cars are passing through daily!!!
F. A. K.
Lovely day exploring the Clifton Suspension Bridge. I would definitely recommend taking a picnic basket and some snack so you can enjoy your day there. Theres a small cafe there that serves food, cold and hot drinks. However, the line was a bit too long so we did not try it. There is a large garden and benches where you can view the bridge. If you are looking for some time to relax, take a book and head there, it’s absolutely lovely. There is also a nice playground if you are taking kids along. Enjoy it 😊
R. M.
If your driving through find some where to park for a couple of hrs and head up to the observatory you can see the full scale of the bridge. (There's a small cafe inside)
Of course walk across as well.
Don't really understand how a bridge has a star rating but it can have 5 as I guess for an attraction in Bristol this is one worth seeing.
There is a small building on the opposite side of the observatory which has a fair bit of information about the bridge as well.
But if you don't want to see it yourself have a look at the photo I took from the observatory.
A. D. S.
Great view, it looks beautiful at night when it's lit. Have pedestrian walkway. Its open all day.
C. P. (.
Free to cross if you are walking. Good views of Bristol and free tours though very busy when we visited. There are local guides who are the for any questions that visitors have. Definitely a lot more popular than I thought it was going to be!
N. G.
Such a cool place with far reaching views over the gorge. If you are around this way head into Clifton village to enjoy the local shops and a bite to eat.
M. Y.
One of the most incredible feats of engineering in the 1800's. Brunel was a legend, and this bridge is a fitting tribute. Parking can be a pain, but you can park for free on the downs, and walk over (30 mins).
Driving over costs £1 but you'll get much more from walking over!
A. D.
Amazing place with spectacular views, we always love to go here for a refreshing walk. Would recommend to at least visit once.
1. J.
Amazing bridge engineering design n construction feat in 1860s. The engineer and team who completed the project after Brunel unfortunate and untimely departure is brilliant.
L. M. C.
Very picturesque place. I recommend everyone who comes to Bristol to visit here. Great views high over the river and road below.
P. “. o. B. W.
First Time walked across since I was little and with my Son which was his first time and he loved it. So I was happy that he was Happy.
E. E.
Great views, nice park next to the bridge, or fabulous woodland/ valley walks on the other side. Must see Giants Cave whilst you are there
A. E.
This is a must see for anyone visiting Bristol.
There are many location to get a good view of it. As well as crossing the bridge itself you can also get very good views of it from many different locations.
The peninsular just beyond Plimsole Bridge
The Observatory grounds
Clifton Downs / Sion Hill
D. P.
Arrived at Bristol Temple Meads Station and took the number 8 bus which stops about 5 minutes walk away, Stunning views from this amazing engineering feat, Lovely café at observatory and the Giant's Cave.
R. S.
Beautiful view even on an overcast day. The information centre on one side is small but informative on the history of the bridge and its structure. One side was close for repair making it a bit busier on one side but still a must see.
h. b.
Stunning piece of engineering in a beautiful environment. Don't miss Clifton observatory and the vault camera and the viewing platform in the giant's cave. Take a picnic - lots of space for everyone. Really lovely staff in the visitor centre. The views from the bridge are incredible, as is the bridge itself. Don't go for an hour, go for the day.
B. K. N.
The fact that it's been at it since 1864 is just wow
D. Y.
Well worth the effort to reach from central Bristol, especially if you combine it with the harbour side walk and a walk up through Clifton. Views from the bridge are excellent and the adjacent park provides plenty of benches for a rest, a picnic and enjoyment of the views.
The Observatory (camera obscura and underground tunnel to a viewing platform on the gorge clifface - £4 looked interesting although we did not try it). For kids, however, the main attraction seemed to be a natural rock slide worn to an incredible polish over the years. When we were there it was in constant use.
H. H.
Beautiful view. Great for a long walk with friends or family.
M. T.
Beautiful views, nice little walk kids loved it
D. R.
Fantastic views from the bridge and designated viewing area, £1 Toll for cars but free to walk across.
e. k.
A very pleasant walk with exellent views of Avon One way direction.and social distance in force at the moment A sign welcomes you in North Somerset when crossing the bridge from Clifton Strongly suggested
G. C.
Really enjoyable walk, beautiful views!
D. C.
Great place to visit.parking can be a challenge though
H. B.
Great views and a lovely area for sightseeing or a picnic
M. R.
The bridge is nice, but the real views are from the observation area.
Get up to the cafe and get one of the various craft beers they have, or a nice coffee, then grab a seat. Great view of the city and bridge.
S. J.
Stunning location with amazing views, lots of green space for a lovely stroll/picnics, or a run if you prefer, Costs £1.00 to cross over if Driving, free to walk across if you can handle heights.
C. K.
Great to visit one of Britain's finest engineering marvels. We were lucky with the good weather, the observation tower was closed due to Covid but noting could be done about that. Hopefully we will go back sometime, I really would like to go down into the recently discovered secret vaults in the towers.
a. s.
This is one of the major attractions of Bristol .... the bridge is a beautiful suspension bridge ..... the overall view is very good and the city in backdrop of the bridge makes a good picture .... bus service from city is very good
J. H.
It is a lovely place for a picnic. Stunning landscape and few lovely attractions. It's really nice to see it from the Camera Obscura from the observation tower on top of the hill.
S. D.
Construction marvel. It is even better at night and don't miss the walk along the river below
N. C.
Nice view. Good safety one way measures in place. Recommend a trip. Bridge has a £1 contact less toll Bridge fee.
P. D. T.
Amazing piece of britist engineering. This is a must see when you visit Bristol
L. L.
Fantastic bridge to visit. It may not be the biggest nor longest bridge I've been at but, it's still a sight to see. The visitor exhibit was also humble but, satisfactory. I'd say it has been very well received given the size and resources spent on this bridge. Would highly recommend this visit on a nice cloudy day. Overall, 9.5/10.
W. K.
What a view and worth the visit. Number 8 bus from Temple Meads and the a short walk to the bridge. First time in Bristol but found it easy to get around.
C.
A beautiful bridge
At night have a nice view
G. V. L.
One of Bristol's most beautiful landmarks with a rich history. The bridge is still fully operational today. Go and have a look. There is a very informative little museum on one site of the bridge with a small lift that will help wheelchair users go up to the second floor. The full history and how the bridge was built is on display. Stunning to see.
K. Y.
Amazing morning spent here! The natural beauty of the gorge and the man made beauty of the bridge.
A. R.
Amazing place to appreciate the engineering and the natural views and surrounding geology!! Must see for anyone visiting Bristol!!

Beautiful views from the bridge. Lovely walk around and over.
If you are going for the photography aspect, I would check out the tide times, we went at low tide and was a bit gutted on how my photos turned out because of there being no water.
A. Z.
Dont forget to visit the observatory as well. Nice view of the bridge from there!
M. M.
The river looked disappointing. The bridge is nice. Not much exciting view from the bridge. May be that's just my opinion. Couldn't go to the observatory.
L. B.
I'm not particularly interested in bridges, but this one moves me. Its a phenomenal piece of architecture as well as being a glorious work of art. I only got to see the bridge for an hour, but it is without a doubt one of the most incredible places I've been in the entire country.
D. N.
Amazing bit of heritage, to think such a bridge was build in the 1800s is a feat of engineering, shame that talent isn't around nowadays.
M. B.
A day in Bristol and we decided to visit Clifton suspension bridge. Views are great ( not as good as Yorkshire tho, 😉) had to clear this being a Yorkshireman. A marvellous feat of engineering. There is plenty of parking on both side of the bridge but I would recommend you drive cross the bridge , park on street and walk back on foot to experience Brunel’s Handiwork. Observatory is a short climb up the hill and give you full view of Bridge.
A. D. P.
Clifton Suspension Bridge is the symbol of Bristol, the city's most recognisable structure and a stunning piece of engineering.
A must visit if you are in Bristol.
T. A.
Absolutely amazing views, especially when the hot air balloons are up and about. Nice walk across and only £1 toll if you are crossing the bridge by car which you can pay by card.
M. B.
We just went to see the bridge as a tourist attraction. It was really good with some spectacular views and great history.
H. A.
An unusual place, I advise you to definitely go here to admire such beauty!
M. K.
Stellar views from the bridge. There is Clifton bridge centre at one end covering the history of the bridge (free entry). Also, recomend the coffee stall just at end the bridge with yummy brownies 😍
P. S.
Of all the suspension bridge I have been to, this by far is the most beautiful and has retained its charm over the years. Be sure to scale up the visitor center near the city end of the bridge.
B. S.
A grand view of the bridge! Surrounding scenery too. Having observatory & tea room on site, being an open space for ramblers!
D. O. T. D. :.
Amazing bridge to walk across. Stunning views all around. A must do for anyone in the area
S. G.
Sadly only one walkway open right now but amazing views from this fabulous piece of engineering.
G. S.
Some charming views on the Clifton side of the bridge, few benches up the slope and a lovely little park.
Only disappointment is the lack of security & CCTV. Not somewhere I'd go alone or recommend being too late in the evening
C. B.
Lovely views just a short walk from Clifton main street
M. H.
Beauty of this place is just mind blowing. View from the Clifton observatory is amazing..
M. G.
Huge Building in Bristol, don't lose It!!
T. O.
This was my first time at Bristol and I’ll say that the Clifton Suspension Bridge is a must see place. The view is breathtaking and amazing. The bridge itself is magnificent! There’s a pathway for people to walk up to see the bridge from different angles. You get to see the Avon Gorge, a road (The Portway) and River Avon when you look down.
There is also the White Lion Bar at Bristol’s Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin where you can eat and enjoy a beautiful ambience.
I. S. C.
Breath taking place - views, walks, history, fascinations and mostly sunrises. No other place thats so electric when sun is rising - summer or winter!
O. D.
I thought this place will be interesting to see, but it exceeded my expectations. Stunning views from such a high and beautiful construction. Really liked our visit.
S. C.
Lovely view of the city and the river Avon, nice walk around the area
S. T.
Great historic place to visit. Wonderful blue skies turning into a golden sunset. Lots of walking over, around and below the bridge.
I. V.
Beautiful bridge, serene views, a few benches in the area to enjoy those
M. K. A. W.
Breathtaking view. It's amazing to have a walk across the bridge.
G. M.
Great place to visit if you like that sort of thing
C. H.
Great place and very fun to go in the Giant's cave to observe from the heart of the mountain 🏔️
B. B.
Absolutely beautiful. You have to pay if you want to cross the bridge by car!
M. V.
For me it was a nice experience to go there. First of all i went to the observatory for a really nice views and after I crossed the bridge to get in a huge forest with walkable routes or even mountain bike routes. I really recommend it! And as well get lost into the forest for some freedom!
M. P.
Grant views around Bristol area. Highlight of Mr. Brunell's talent.
П. Т.
Gorgeous view! The river, the cliffs, the cave and the city! I enjoyed it, although it was raining.
D. W.
It's the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. Not exactly a day out but if you are nearby then it is definitely worth a visit due to its history and status as an awesome feat of engineering.
*the dog enjoyed it
S. P.
Clifton Suspension Bridge now offer tours of the bridge abutement on the Leigh Woods side of the bridge. These are very informative, and it's nice to explore a part of previously undiscovered Bristol. I went on the 1hour tour and it was very enjoyable.
K. M.
One of the most amazing places where we were. Must see😍
M. C.
outstanding view. extraordinary location. very well structured bridge and the surrounding area was also lovely. you should definitely check it out if you happen to be in bristol! cheers
N. 4.
One of Brunels iconic creation and an outstanding engineering feat. I'd avoid the toll charge if I could, but what a sight the bridge is from the viewing point. Definitely recommend to visit.
J. B.
A monument to the metioric rise of Britain during the industrial revolution. Best viewed from below in my opinion. There was nothing like this bridge until this bridge and changed the world as we know it today.
R. G.
One of the best place for day out with family. Park your car on the side of the road, before cross the Bride or other side of the Bridge. A pound for each hour. If you decided to cross the bridge with the car have to pay a pound each way.
S. W.
Absolute genius piece of engineering and the views are spectacular, well worth the visit.
A. G.
This huge Bridge is a very nice place to explore in Bristol, with good views of the River Avon and part of the city. You can cross for free walking, and 1 £ by car. There is an observatory and green areas to relax. Completely recommendable !!
I. A.
Nice bridge walking for free car 1£ in one direction easy to pay by coins. Nice viewpoint on the east side next to the bridge and a terrace restaurant (white lion). Parked the car as approach the bridge from the city center to the left street before driving over the bridge.
R. K.
It’s a good walk over the bridge. If it’s nice weather you can get some really good views from the bridge. Go get an ice cream and have a wonder across the suspension bridge. It’s beautiful.
T. K.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel's masterpiece of industrial design almost 200 years old. Originally built for pedestrian and horse-drawn traffic, however the bridge was so over-engineered and ingeniously constructed that it still provides a safe vehicle and pedestrian crossing over the 76-metre gorge, circa 1831.
S.
Great view of the river flowing underneath the bridge.
There is a observatory nearby where you can walk though cave like structure to view bridge from other side.
The design of the bridge seems well planned and ahead of its time.
The walkway by the side is bit narrow and can cause minor blockages if runners are running through it.
O. D.
Beautiful and strong construction. Didn't expect it to be so high. Enjoyed views from local viewpoints and highly recommended to pop into local visitors centre. Must see!
S.
Short but beautiful. Walk across to the visitor centre for information on other places to visit. 3pm Bristol side has a guided tour
A. G.
Great time, the cave worth to see. You definitely need to walk down the bridge, the views are awesome.
S. J.
Bit of an uphill hike to get to it, but a nice view.
A. D.
Wow!! An amazing piece of structure. Well built and looking down can be scary. It was a good experience and would like to visit it again. Clifton was a genius.
N. P.
The views from the bridge are stunning. Is a real experience to walk across the bridge - you suddenly realise just how high up you are.
S. C.
Really popular tourist attraction. Would highly recommend 👍🏾
m. f.
Best views. The place is extraordinary
C. H.
Opened in 1864 this suspension bridge is among the first of its kind and is one of the beating hearts of Bristol with views over Avon Gorge
S. L.
drove and walked across in daylight. Went back after climbing Cabot Tower for sunset and walked under after dark. Fantastic views from the park near observatory.
S. R.
Lovely scenic and informative stroll. Took a walk down to the cave too. The purples and greens in the cave walls really catch your eye on the ascent.
A. C.
Nice spot to look at the Bristol city. It's so beautiful to view the river at night from top of the bride. City looks beautiful too. Worth going to visit this bridge at night.
F. I.
Nice area, very picturesque 😊
t. G.
Unique piece of engineering.a must tour.and see the cave..(138 steps) alittle steep.leading to a overhanging balcony.with a great view of Clifton suspension bridge.
K. N.
Nice design and requires £1 to cross over the toll. Good for bikes and pedestrians can walk on either side, although is a bit narrow. Views are amazing and would be good to watch from high above, like a drone.
U. I. C.
Amazing architecture located in lush green surroundings.
R. F.
A stunning piece of engineering and well worth walking over as it is as much exhilarating as it is terrifying! Do check out from close up and far away to spot the asymmetry of the towers and it is still hard to notice that the Clifton side is higher than the Leigh woods side. Do go to the visitor's centre (free entry) in Leigh Woods and if you are around 3pm Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holiday lookout for a person wearing a Hi-vis jacket for a free tour of the bridge.
T. C.
A natural wonder with so much to see and do, go to the observatory, go down to Clifton village with its quaint shops and cafes. Walk the downs and walk across the bridge, fantastic fun for the whole family.
J. i.
Very nice place to visit
A. M.
Went as it was getting dark. Nice to see the city lit up in the sunset.
Walkways are small, but lovely bridge anyway!
There is a small park just down from the observatory good for the kids to have a run around.
On the other side of the bridge there was a small coffee cart seemed to take contactless. Didn't stop for a hot chocolate sadly. Maybe next time!
R. B.
Great example of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's engineering talent. A very early suspension bridge still in use today. Make sure you go to the free visitor centre on the Leigh woods side for more insight into the bridge history.
R. Z.
An absolutely amazing structure. Some might say this is just a bridge but it’s marvellous to see this miracle of engineering that offers breathtaking views of Bristol. Also recommend visiting the local giants cave and Clifton observatory and cafe.
K.
Such a grand bridge, love the view! The local village is also very lovely, people are friendly, such a peaceful little town. Easy to commute to city centre.
I won’t be regret to visit this place while I am in Bristol.
R. P.
Waited years to see this amazing feat of engineering. I only walked across and didn't see the visitor centre or abutments, that's for the next visit. A wonderful walk through Woodland one side and the charming Clifton the other
M. T.
Even if you visiting Bristol for one day - Must see place!
A bit of steep walk up! But definitely worth views!!
C. M.
Absolute brillent to see another of brunnels marvelous creations. The bridge is very well maintained and the 1 pound toll is hugely reasonable.and the fact that this is collected to look after the bridge seen as the local council has never done anything says it's worth it.
The visitors centre is worth a look it's free and you can make donations and the old gentlemen is very friendly. The views from the bridge of the Avon gauge is impressive and the fact brunel went tover the gauge in a basket shows his determination to build his bridge. Excellent visit and worthy walk. Parking cost 1 pound for every hour. To aalk across the bridge is free.
D. I.
Nearly 200 years old. Just park on either side and marvel at the engineering brilliance. Remember: not designed as a railway bridge. Gorgeous views.
M. S.
Don't miss this beautiful view, the suspension bridge is over the Avon river.
My husband and I made last month a beautiful tour walking early in the morning from Bristol center, in a very sunny day, we recommend this without a doubt.
It's a toll bridge only for cars (very cheap), free for pedestrians. We also return to Bristol walking, it took us three hours for the complete tour, with a stop at a local cafeteria to refresh ourselves.
It' s a magnificent work of engeneering, that was constructed and opened in 1864.
g. k.
This bridge is impressive. In the side of the mountain you can get some awesome pictures also. Worth the visit for 30-45 minutes. If you're afraid of heights be careful
S. J.
Beautiful bridge and very ingesting to find out about the history of it! I popped her by myself to take some photos and it was great. There are some excellent viewing points from around the bridge.
L. C.
What a wonderful piece of architecture. I love Clifton suspension bridge, I visit it every time I come to Bristol. The toll is now a £1 to go over and the same coming back.
M. R.
We really enjoyed our visit to the bridge. Good walking access from Clifton Observatory (also work a visit). Easy to walk across and the Brunel information centre is very interesting too. The eastern side walk way is closed for repairs.
S. B.
First time I have been back in 40 years. Difficult to find parking close by where a parking machine works. Left my friends to walk over Bridge. They came back just as parking attendant came to check on valid tickets 🎟
J. R.
Definitely worth a visit. Note that on the one side of the bridge there is a suspension bridge museum with the history of the bridge. It was really interesting.
R. P.
Just breathtaking! After walking across it and back to experience the sheer height of it, you must walk up to where the Observatory is, above it. We didn't go into the Observatory as there was a queue, but fine views of the bridge can be had from the top of the hill.
M. G.
A real highlight of Bristol. Brunel's suspensión bridge has a visit centre to the west as well as coffe shop. There are interesting flora and stunning views of the city and gorge.
T. G.
The bridge is nice. But the location and the view is one of the best i have ever seen. It is a must see if you visit Bristol.
D. F.
Incredible place. If you have fear of height don't go on the middle of the bridge. Even edge of bridge will make you scary. But overally fantastic place to take a break in walking around Bristol. Easily reachable on foot.
S. M.
Always a nice spot. Great view and an impressive bridge!
S. B.
This is an iconic landmark in Bristol. Looks beautiful over the river and stands out on the Bristol skyline.
There is a visitors centre, and it's free to look around.
There are tours but they get booked up fast.
Walking over the bridge there are so many fabulous views.
Walking over is best. You can take in the sights.
£1 toll each way should you choose to drive.
Parking is good at Leigh woods.
E. C.
A marvellous feat of engineering, but not for the faint of heart. The bridge spans the Avon Gorge just over one hundred metres above the water.
Pedestrians and cyclists are free to cross, but there is a toll for all other road vehicles of £1.
On the Somerset side, there is a small visitor centre with lots of information about the bridge.
K. D.
Beautiful and extremely scenic place and marvellous engineering. It’s just a bridge mind you - so bare that in mind.
n. c.
An awesome piece of engineering, well worth a close up visit. Best done by foot with lots of viewpoints along the way. A nice bit of green park up at the top with lots of dog walkers and trees. There is a Cafe with amazing views and loos.(!)
P. C.
Beautiful walk down from The Downs through 'The Gully' and along the Portway ending up at Howells near Bristol Harbor and 'The Mardyke' as the sun sets
M. S.
Lovely historic bridge in super scenery. Free to walk or cycle, motor vehicles pay a fee. Local residents can get a frequent user card.
Well worth the walk across and don't miss the visitors centre for lots of history.
R. D.
Exxellent scenery. Beautiful visuals. Lovely walking on the bridge. Nearby parks are wonderful for.picnic
S. O.
Amazing views from here! Best to walk across on foot.
B. M.
Stunning piece of architecture by Brunel, definitely a must see when in Bristol. The bridge can be visited by foot for breathtaking views or viewed from the nearby hill (involving a small climbing walk)
J. E.
It's smaller than I expected, but it's good to have finally been there and walked across it. Nice views.
J. G.
Great to drive over ,cost £1 each way , card only and there is parking on the other side so you can walk back and take a better look
P. A.
It never fails to impress in any weather, to either stand at the observatory, or walk across, or even drive across to get the full experience. .
S. K.
Nice little museum and cave walk and cafe included with bridge. Good experience, would recommend
T. C.
Very picturesque. Good boutiques, cafes and other shops nearby which makes it quite a relaxing day out.
s. n.
A wonderful place to visit, Great views all around & although the visitors centre was closed due to covid when we went it nice to see Free ( Donations accepted)
A. M. T.
Hard to believe this was built 150 years ago. The scenery is stunning with all the greenery and the Avon flowing towards Bristol underneath. Make sure you head to the observatory to get a better view. The bridge is 75 meters and the charge for traversing with a vehicle is 1£. It is free for pedestrians.
N. S.
Absolutely beautiful, even the surrounding scenery. A must visit. Nice walk.
T. M.
Fantastic free bridge to visit, toll to drive over however free to walk and pretty awesome inspiring views over Bristol and the river Avon.
Nice little walks in the surround parks on the eastern side aswell.
R. A.
Wonderful suspension bridge. Good for a half day picnic. Wonderful views. We've made some memories as family here.
E. F.
Damn nice bridge.
M. F.
Fantastic day out. Perfect weather. Thoroughly enjoyed this historic monument.
P. B.
A must see in a visit to Bristol, new visitor centre very good too, showing how it came to be . Pedestrians free to cross. Cars pay toll (not expensive). Views on a sunny day are excellent. No parking onsite, use nearby streets and walk.
R. V.
Very nice and very well illuminated. It offers incredible views of the city and some benches whe to relax and enjoy the sight. Very secure as it's controlled on CCTV, and there's an officer always nearby. Nice to go and check the old and haunted-looking house at the end of the bridge.
M. O.
Not as impressive when you're crossing the bridge. I didn't look down as I was crossing it as I don't like heights. But looked out over Bristol when I got to the far end. Later when I was driving under it I saw how impressive it was and it seemed much higher from the ground.
P. S. M.
Great structure! Amazing sights over valley and Clifton / Leigh Woods. Cars pay £1 tool to cross (cash only)
A. B.
Beautiful bridge. The walk up is killer though so be prepared! We skipped the visitor centre because of Covid but that was a lovely building too right at the top.
C. S.
Amazing views of Bristol and the Avon gorge
M. D.
An awesome bridge with fantastic views. 5 stars because it lived up to its name as a suspended bridge in Clifton. Well done Isambard.
M. B.
Stunning, great view from above at the observatory too. Only challenge finding somewhere to park
C. B.
Had an amazing day out!
Lots to see, beautiful views and lots of nature. Truly beautiful.
R. B.
Marvellous piece of engineering with fantastic views, would highly recommend a visit to the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
G. I.
Lovely place to be. On top of the world looking down on creation!! Great when the sun is out and the skies are blue but equally great when there's a clear night sky and you can enjoy the lightshow. Plenty to eat and drink just a stone's throw away in Clifton. Go on, get yourself up there and enjoy the views.
A. L.
It's beautiful at night, try coming to Clifton Suspensions bridge in the evening you will be surprised.
K.
Beautiful view from the top, I was there for first time in my life (passed a driving licence finally) even though I've seen it years ago. Don't know if it's worth to pay for the pass to drive through if you're there just to see it and don't need to drive further but I believe money will be spent on maintaining this piece of art so even if you don't have to - drive and pay ;)
J.
Often walk around here and the downs with my dog, great views on a sunny day.
R. G.
I would not recommend this place to anyone suffering from vertigo or fear of heights.
I went on a Sunday and was able to find off-street parking near by.
There was a lively atmosphere with lots and lots of tourists and local visitors.
It is all step free and with a public toilet that was surprisingly clean.
There is a £1 toll charge.
H. G.
The bridge is just awesome. The engineering and the history are so impressive and the sheer spectacle and views over the City and the docks are wonderful.
C. P.
Best suspension bridge in the country. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Bristol.
W. D.
The view is amazing. I'd highly recommend take the time to walk across and enjoy the view.
J. F.
What a fantastic piece of engineering history and still in remarkable condition. Would highly recommend the hard hat tour which can be booked online which enables you to see inside 2 of the vaults hidden below the Leigh Woods abutment for 140 years and only rediscovered by chance in 2002. Really interesting behind the scenes peak into the past.
K. M.
Stunning! Views for miles and reminded me of my yoof. Bristol has some very lovely sites well worth visiting. The bridge is just one...
V. V.
First you take steep stairs down to get to the viewpoint. The view of the bridge was okay. I think you can see similar views from the other side without paying. However, the place is in a park so you can have a picnic on the grass with nice scenery.
T. V.
Scenic and beautiful. The bridge does shake a bit due to the wind. But the view and the air on top is simply heavenly.
G. D.
We visited during Storm Eunice, but that was quite dramatic. It takes about 5 minutes to walk across. The Visitor Centre was closed due to the winds, but dramatic views of the bridge and the gorge. There is an observatory there and parking by meter for £1 per hour. A must see for Bristol/Clifton. The gorge has rare plants, which are well documented.
J. C.
It's a bridge. Pretty sturdy. Does what it says on the tin tbh.
It's also stunning to look at!
E. B.
Good views, great place to practice long exposure photography too
a. h.
100 year old bridge with a lot of history. You should be aware that you are required to pay £1 toll to drive through the bridge. But please visit the Clifton Observatory which is a short climb from this bridge and has a better view of this bridge.
K. R.
Such a beautiful bridge. Make sure you stay on the left side as it is one way traffic for pedestrians.
J.
Good experience. The view is lovely and not too much crowd. Although if visiting by car finding parking within the area is a bit difficult but there are plenty of car parks available in the area and close to the city. You can walk along the bridge and even drive but need a toll ticket for it. There is an observatory right next to the bridge and the ancient cave for which the last entry is 15.45hrs. Even if you miss that chance you can walk around it as the place is massive. Lots of history attached to this place. There is a cafe located in the observatory too. Highly recommended!
J. D.
Pictures taken on a walk along the foot / cycle path on the south of the river Avon between Bristol and Pill and Portishead.
J. E.
I've wanted to walk across the bridge for a long time and it didn't disappoint. Fantastic structure and brilliant to get up close
R. B.
A handsome bridge in the heart of Bristol. Must visit if you're around. We went on a sunny day and really the pictures came out very nice.
There's free off road parking just few steps before the bridge so you can avoid the toll if you're just there for the bridge. Public toilets are there (although very dirty).
J. S.
an incredible place, it is better to climb up to the small castle and contemplate the views.
E. K.
A must visit location of Bristol.
O. S.
It's a great place to visit. The best views of t bridge are from the Observatory hill. And then you definitel need to walk over the bridge and visit the bridge visitors centre.
A. T.
Nice place, but difficult to find parking around for small walk and photos
