Reviews of M Shed
A. O.
A great museum with a lot of exhibits about the history of Bristol and its people. Is worth a visit and entry is free. Been on the ground floor is great for wheelchair users and people with prams. Entry is free and is only 10 minutes walking distance from SS Great Britain. The cafe with the seating outside is a nice place to spend time.
A. B.
Great place to spend an afternoon learning about the history and evolution of Bristol (and England in general!) I love the fact that the walls are full not only with interesting things but also pictures of contemporary people - change makers, visionaries, activists, artists and so on. There’s an original Banksy on sight, the Grim Reaper - one of the oldest ones, a cool range of vintage cars, motorbikes and other means of transportation and there’s even an old red telephone box. Cool place! Excellent for tourists! Free entrance ticket and parking available nearby..
R. M.
Nice place to go with family. Detailed museum of Bristol in ages Located at the centre of city. Harbor side.
Everything kept very neat and tidy. Inside the and outside the museum lots to enjoy. Small cafe inside.
Outside there is lots of cargo restaurants with dine in and takeaway. But little costly.
Wine and beer also serving in the cargo restaurants.
Parking..
On nearby parking places run by council,
pay and display or pay by ring go app.

Had a great visit. First time visit and really enjoyed it. My father worked at Rolls Royce in the 70s and worked on Concorde after mentioning this an amazing guide took us behind the scenes to look at one of their exhibits. We would highly recommend a visit it is highly worth it.
M. M.
Beautiful meusum, it is all about the history of this city ( Bristol), it consists of 3 stages full of heritages and memory of the people of this city.
It is suitable for the whole family.
The entrance is free
There is paid parking on the opposite side.
I highly recommend it 👌
B. A.
Great place to learn about Bristol history. Kids loved it. Has interactive plays and lots of stop to enjoy. Easy, beautiful walk to it if you going with bus.
L. M.
A really good museum next to the harbour with many displays. It clearly shows the history of Bristol and I still don’t know how they got a double decker 1980s bus in there. Sometimes, the steam trains from the Bristol harbour railway park up outside and you can smell the steam from inside the building. Overall, a nice thing to do whilst in Bristol.
D. Z.
There’s a beautiful view from the rooftop! It’s free and you can access from the 2nd floor. The museum has a great collection about the city of Bristol but the exhibition itself seems a bit old fashioned. I miss the recent facts like Black Lives Matter protest.
L. L.
Amazing free museum which explores the history of Bristol's politics, culture and people. Could easily spend an hour or two in here, I think it also has some rotating exhibitions too: there was one on climate change when we visited. Well worth a visit, especially if its your first time in Bristol. Attendants were also friendly and happy to answer questions. The terrace also has a great view of harbourside.
I. D.
Great free entertainment and history of Bristol. Really nice setting. Lots of eateries and places to have a drink nearby, plus the S S Great Britain at yhe end.
J. D.
Amazing! We love it here and visit every time I'm town. So much available and its free. Our local history held in a top location. So much fun yo be had here ♡
F. T.
Booked my ticket (£5) a month in advance. It was the 1st time I visited Mshed.
It is worth every penny. I saw displays that reminded me of old times. However I learnt about where I live.
They were great about my disabilities and my needs. I could feel that they actually cared for my welfare and that I enjoyed my visit/experience.
Highly recommend visiting.
S. S.
Amazing museum which hosts the history of Bristol city. Has photo exhibition on the 2bd floor which requires entry tickets. The museum itself is free entry though. Has washrooms in each floor with a beer/snacks parlor on the ground.
Wonderful views of River Avon and good shade.
T. P.
Had a lovely afternoon with our granddaughter, a right mix of nostalgia for us and new and interesting things for her. I thought the lighting was a bit dim in places, but outside, seeing one of the dock cranes in operation was excellent. Will definitely be visiting again soon.
D. L.
Free museum to visit in Bristol. It displays lots of art, as well as one famous artwork by artist banksy. "The grim reaper" / "The ferryman". A skeleton driving a ship. The museum is really nice and central. There is cafe and Bathrooms are available too. No pre-booking of tickets necessary.
J. S.
M Shed should be your to do list when you are around, first the entry is free , second it’s amazing museum place to know the history of Bristol.
M Shed is spread across three floors any picture and review can’t do justice to the place, do visit.
Time - 30- 120 minutes depending on your inquisitiveness.
H. B.
A wide range of interesting exhibits on varied topics.
The store room tour is to be recommended. Guide, 'Sue ', (on my tour) was knowledgeable and convivial . Gave a good history on Edward Colston, whose statue is currently in store room.
J. P.
Great musuem on everything Bristol. Free entry (donations welcome). LOTS of things to read, but not many interactive displays. I found some of the display cabinets confusing, as items on display were numbered, but numbers were repeated for different items. Very spacious, so good for prams or wheelchair users. Lifts were available to travel between floors. There is the MShed cafe too, which serves drinks, cakes and meals. The museum is a real mishmash of things, paintings, bicycles, cigars, chocolate, engines, Wallace and Gromit, a bus, an Anderson shelter and much, much more. A very enjoyable afternoon.
R. W.
Some really interesting exhibits. I particularly liked the information about the Pegasus engines. Some of the interactives were not working which was a bit of a let down and some were traditional museum faire which I think could be improved, but it was good and we will likely visit again. I also really enjoyed the tea and rocky road in the cafe.
R. B.
Great free museum, all about the history of Bristol and the surrounding areas.
There were some interesting pieces in there, great for adults not so much for kids.
We even learned about the mysterious holes in Redcliffe wall near the scout hut that we had been wondering about. Turns out the tunnels were cut for them to mine the sand for making glass.
E. H.
Lovely museum covering the history and culture of Bristol and its people. Lots for adults to see, as well as plenty of hands-on exhibits that children will love: a play shop, an old bus, bomb shelters, hopscotch and more. Free entry is a bonus, and the shop is lovely too!
J. C.
Great place, kids always love it. Quite a few interactive displays not working today sadly. The assistant who helped my soon with the butterfly coding and display was lovely.
J. N.
We loved it here my little boy loved it. Best thing for him was at the end of the day seeing the trains getting put back in the shed. Even got a bit of the coal from the train. My boy is a train lover so to him this was amazing I would 100% be back
C. S.
You can see that lots of love from both the curators and the people of Bristol went into the exhibition. Engaging, intreresting, personal and educational!
H. I.
Interesting and informative museum. Something for everyone. Don't miss the Beryl Cooks Paintings. Good facilities and shop. On the top floor step outside for excellent views.
A. C.
Lovely place to go with a family or for a free afternoon. They have some really interesting bits of Bristol history, including natural history, wartime and civil history. They even have a book made of a person's skin (yes, really).
It's a good place to go if you want to see how big a penny farthing is in real life. Since it's free, it'd be a shame if someone lived here and didn't go to see it. Their hygiene precautions were very good and you can book tickets in advance.
M. C.
Great place to visit while in Bristol. Staff were very friendly & helped with a lot of useful information. Walking around M Shed was a educational exoerience which my son loved aswell while learning about the historical importance of Bristol. Overall a good experience 👍😁💥
I. R. R.
Bright and colourful MEUSEUM with lots of information about history.
Great option for a fantastic day out place with family and friends.
J. t.
Very interesting to learn a lot about Bristol, well worth a visit.
Probably a good call if you are looking for a quality attraction on a rainy day to keep the family entertained, and it is Free.
Or like today, it was nice to get a break from all that heat.
El Scorchio 🔥👍
D. K.
As always, I had a wonderful time spent here. Any time of the year is good as exhibition changes are regular.
J. G.
Free to enter, although on line booking advised. Lots to see about Bristol history, some of it also I feel is of national importance. Colston statue and story fascinating. Well worth a visit.
J. F.
Great museum by the harbour in Bristol, full of interesting exhibits about the history and people of Bristol. Just a 10 minute walk from the SS Great Britain.
L. L.
Planned a visit as thought would keep the little one busy for the afternoon.
Was expecting to visit the kids interactive area but due to pandemic, they no longer have a kid interactive area.
Despite that, the had 2 Banksy pieces and the little one still had lots to see.
Spoke to one staff, didn't get his name but tall thin fella, very knowledgeable and approachable. He made the visit more enjoyable.
D. W.
It's all about the history of Bristol from prehistoric times. Located in a dockside shed it's fascinating exhibits are well worth a visit. Nearby is SS Great Britain so easy to combine the two visits.
J. C.
Had a lovely afternoon out with the kids, 7 & 5, both really fascinated with the history within the Mshed. Giftshop was the only bit we never visited due to kids being tired food and coffee in cafe were lovely too - Staff really helpful😍
A. C.
Great free place to visit with some interactive exhibits for the kids and plenty to see from the history of Bristol
C. W.
Vanguard Exhibition on Street art and modern art including Banksy is excellent. It us very vibrant and thought provoking. There are three short films in three areas. World class exhibition in Bristol.
I. A.
Free entry to the main exhibits but not for the additional exhibitions and they recommend booking a time slot at the moment. Really interesting information all about the history and people of Bristol. Can do quickly or take longer. Definitely recommend a visit if you're visiting Bristol!
C. e.
Really nice place... Very relaxed place... Recommend you visit if in the area
R. C.
Have a look for the collectibles and history of the town. They regularly have some thematic exhibitions as well.
I thought it’s an artsy place before visit, but it’s actually a down-to-earth and educational place to walk.
You can explore some cafes, bars and shops near the space. Expect to spend half day trip to walk along the river and pier.
D. T.
A very good museum. Well worth a visit. I liked the exhibitions about people power. How we can change things if we are brave and stand up for our rights. It's important that local government listen to the people that live in the area and make life better for the locals.
J. M.
Fantastic part of the Bristol Museum, with some interesting history of Bristol history and culture.
Including an original Banksy
R. A.
A great day out with kids or as an idle way to pass an hour looking at some interesting pieces.
The ground floor has some cool stuff, my favourite is the old bus, super interesting.
Overall a lovely choice of exhibits and well presented.
D. S.
It was a nice atmosphere and had a fantastic view by the water.
T. F.
Very interesting to see old Bristol and surrounding areas. Would be 5 stars but think they could have a few more things to interact with. Kids enjoyed it but started to get bored fast. Maybe a little more information on the two big football clubs and a net and ball would keep the kids focus a little more.
D. S.
A large museum of social history of Bristol. Most interactive exhibits were closed due to covid (unsurprisingly), but it would have been more interesting.
3/5 because I would not recommend it to a first-time visitor. The things displayed are very local and don't merge into one picture of the city; rather it is a collection of pieces that are hard to connect unless you know Bristol well.
The top floor was closed due to an exhibition that was being prepared.
There are some banksy pieces in the museum.
The staff was really nice and helpful.
N. Y.
Good museum, been there more than one
C. S.
A great place showing the history of Bristol and surrounding areas
C. K.
Very nice museum, great experience and unique
T. C.
Great museum experience covering Bristol's history. I wish we had had more time but the displays we saw were great. Definitely coming back and as it's free to get in I've got no reason not to.
C. B.
Down in Bristol visiting my father and came across M Shed when looking for something to do, there was only two and a half hours until closing but thought would give it a go. Very glad we did, it is a very good museum thoroughly enjoyed it. Didn't have time to get round everything so will definitely be going back!
M. M.
No entry fee but we did book a time slot. Lots of very interesting info on City of Bristol. Good selection of food, including vegetarian. Also great bacon baps and very chunky filling sandwiches
A. S.
Great place to visit, lots of interesting stuff to see
D. H.
Free of charge museum showcasing history of bristol and its people. Great way to spend an afternoon including the various lunch options close by. Definitely more catered to children, for them this would be 5 stars.
E. M.
Free entry and it’s a nice exhibit. Make sure to buy tickets in advance for things like the photographer of the year. Has a nice banksy piece inside and it really wasn’t crowded. Lots of kids inside as well. Good for families.
A. H.
Excellent museum in the centre of Bristol. Lots to do and see and some interactive elements to keep children occupied. There’s also an area you can sit with toys which kept my two year old occupied for a while. Mshed also has a lovely cafe and an excellent shop!
A. 5.
This is a lovely museum to wander round in. Free to enter. Lovely walking around the harbour. Little train rides.
S. K.
Great place to visit, with lovely staff. I visited today and witnessed the young man working in the shop help a visitor make a donation. The visitor couldn't fill in the form and asked the shop assistant if he could assist him, which he did with a smile on his face. The whole place is certainly somewhere everyone should spend a few hours in. It changes all the time and like me you can visit over and over again.
s. l.
We stumbled apon this place whilst visiting Bristol on a family day out. Our 3 year old son loved it! And so did we! It's free to visit and there's lots of interesting and interactive pieces for children to try.
It's not very big and will only take a short while to see it all.
Our sons favourite part was going upstairs on the vintage double decker bus and pressing the traffic lights! Thank you M Shed!
We'd highly recommend a visit!
Z. C.
Lovely free museum about Bristol. I particularly enjoyed the nice touches about Bristolians submitted by the community - the local musicians, the activists, the community-builders. Great for all and not too childish, though enough stuff for the little ones to enjoy.
Shame the Colston statue isn’t on display right now but it would be a fitting addition to the protest collection.
S. T.
Very interesting info about local community
Photo of Julian Perry with his painting if Hartcliffe, painted 1998.
G. P.
A fascinating look back over the history of Bristol, taking in everything from Bristol blue glass to the St Paul's riots of the 1980s. A great (free entry) way to while away a couple of hours. Exhibits over 2 floors.
j. f.
Interesting place. Well worth a visit whenever you have some time to spend in Bristol. It feels most geered to locals, but there is also sufficient interesting info to be had for us longway travelling visitors.
A. C.
Great place for kids to know more about Bristol!
C. B.
Interesting history - ancient and more recent - of Bristol.
C. B.
Loved M shed - great free museum and walkway along the river. Lots of local history.
D. W.
A nice place by the dockside to visit. A very scenic walk towards the museum, especially if the weather is favourable. There is an exhibition about the history of Bristol. Takes into factor the historical, cultural and geographical changes of Bristol. The entry is free. Sometimes there is a special exhibition held on the upper floor (admission may not be free for the special exhibition).
S. W.
A must visit if in Bristol, Bristolians should be proud.
G.
Plenty of Bristol History in this wonderful museum on the Bristol Harbour.
There are stunning views from the upstairs balcony also, so on a nice day,you could stand there and take in the beautiful views and watch the boats go along the harbour.
Lots of things to see and do here, for any age. It is nice to see so much of Bristol's history here, and not just for people who are visitors of our lovely Brizzle, but also for the people who live here. Its lovely to have a museum with so much local history.
In the top floor there is a changeable exhibit, which is usually chargeable.
There are toilets and a cafe here.
J. C.
Great free museum to learn about the local area. The exhibits were a bit jumbled up chronologically which was a little confusing but info and exhibits were all very interesting which is what I care about!
A. B.
Great place to visit. Cafe is over priced tho. Loved all the exhibits and staff there to help you if needed. Really interesting exhibits of life in Bristol. We were lucky today that the steam train was running and we got to have a ride up to the SS Great Britain.
M. M.
Located right at the bank and offers great view of the river Avon. The night time view is especially mesmerising. The building is modern with lifts and glass doors. Each floor has its own designed style and decorations. I only encountered nice people working there.
e. h.
We happened across m shed whilst simply exploring Bristol. We were amazed by what was there to see. Even more surprised to see That the cost was donations. A wonderful insight into Bristol history and of the era's with which they focus. My son loved the double decker bus. Well worth a visit interest for a broad range of ages.
S. B.
Great wildlife photography exhibition well worth a visit, if the weather is fine take a walk around the balcony fabulous views over the harbour.
E. R.
Nice museum, free entrance. You can see the history of Bristol's people and city. Suitable also for kids as there are some interactive games. Beautiful view from the roof terrace. Behind the museum there are several small restaurants which offer great selection of food.
E. C.
A museum focusing on Bristol's people and past. A good amount of information is displayed for each exhibit but few of them jump out. There is not a huge amount of interactivity to engage younger children
J. C.
Love going here, seeing all the things from the past, lots to take in , you need multiple visits if you want to read all the exhibition notes..
G. S.
If your interested in the history of Bristol then it's a wonderful place, all laid out lovely and nice and clean
B. G.
Went with my daughter to see an exhibition of photographs of wildlife in their gallery. It is a place of peace and calm after the frenzy of the bars along the waterside, cool on a hot day. They have a good shop in the gallery itself and there are food outlets in the same building. Friendly staff to guide you about and excellent toilets, something Bristol lacks in it's touristy areas.
L. L.
Very informative displays describing Bristol, its commerce, history and development. Free entry, 3rd floor is for paying customers.
S. M.
A good way to spend a couple of hours exploring so many different facets of Bristol. The excellent street art exhibition was on when I visited which was well worth the admission price as it gave me so much context to something I knew nothing about. One bit of advice - start on the ground floor, wasn't obvious to me to do so, but after I realised how much context I'd have had for the rest!
S. P.
A good family friendly museum packed with exhibits about Bristol and it's history. From Roman mosaics to old Bristol buses and onto the present day with a Banksy and the Colston statue that was toppled into the harbour.
And best of all it is free, although you may have to queue to enter on weekends and at busy times.
D. H.
Great museum and amazing location. The views are fantastic. Worth the stop!
G. S.
An eclectic collection randomly put together but this was quite good as anyone could find something that would interest them. Lots of friendly staff. Some nice views of the harbour.
Free but very worthy of a donation.
R. J.
Great place to visit with fascinating displays and the fact that it's free to visit only makes the place better
M. T.
Brilliant displays of Bristol living both modern and the past. Especially worth paying the extra right now for the street art exhibition. We went to see the banksy but ended up spending hours in here. A must visit whilst in Bristol.
R. M.
Great would highly recommend this place for a visit . Property allow a couple of hours to look around .
R. F.
Great museum all about Bristol and its people. Good cafe overlooking harbour too.
J. K.
This is a dangerous place! You enter and you completely lose the sense of time and don't realise how much time you have spent in there! This is a very interesting fascinating display of local Bristol history through the ages. My wife was transported back to her childhood when we got into the double-decker bus of which she said that it smelled just like she remembers it. There is enough to keep children interested and plenty for the adults to lok at.
R. P.
Quite a fun museum of local stuff. We mostly fancied a ride on the train, which is only a short run but enjoyable. The staff/volunteers are friendly and helpful.
C. l.
Nice little museum to spend an hour or so in and learn a bit about Bristol history and culture. Went with 7 and 1 year old and both were entertained.
P. J.
Great museum to know about Bristol history, it's economic and cultural development. The controversial Colston statue is on display in the museum.
L. B.
A nice museum with plenty of history about Bristol with a lovely observation deck with views over the harbour on the top floor. It was quite a bit smaller than I imagined though, they could benefit from having more exhibits.
D. M.
An amazing place, steeped in the history of Bristol and well designed with focus on specific types of history in different areas. Well worth a second visit...too much to take in on one day.
G. S.
The museum is fun and has some unexpected exhibits
B. H.
Great museum, visited primarily for the Colston exhibition but really enjoyed the rest of the museum as well. The museum gives a great background to the city of Bristol and its people.
S. A.
Enjoyed visiting here, loads of interesting exhibits. Was very lucky that this was a special day and they were boat rides are running and the trains were operating.
J. P.
It was very interesting, seeing the older vircales
S. N.
being a regular visitor to Bristol, M Shed has been a great place to find out about the City's beginnings and history. The exhibits are good and the regular and varied special exhibitions are fab too (who can forget Briswool - a delightful find and I still smile when I think of it) from wildlife photo's to local specialist events. Try to get a behind the scene's tour of their store, guided and bookable. Great café and good views from the top floor terrace.
J. H.
Great little pocket of Bristol History located on Bristol Docks with great views of part of the city. Lovely interesting film shows showing the life and times of this historic city.
E. C.
Great museum filled with interesting exhibits, went to see the Edward coleston statue exhibition and was pleased to see a very thoughtful and considered show.
D. B.
Completely free entry. Can spend as little or much time as you want. If you read everything and listened to all the interactive displays you could be there all day
C. H.
Now know a lot more about the history of Bristol and its people.
L. M.
I was at the M Shed for the Wildlife Photographer of the year 2018 exhibition which was fantastic as always. It's a great venue with friendly and helpful staff and wonderful exhibitions. It also has lovely views of the harbour and is close to lots of great restaurants and cafes. Best place to park if you can get a spot is Wapping Wharf right behind it.
M. D.
The ground floor exhibition area seems a little random and unfocussed. I found the signage/ labelling intrusive as it was often on the large side and mounted on the glass cases obscuring the articles in the case. The star of the show is a double decker Bristol bus, which was very popular with children who no doubt have never seen one of these once familiar leviathans of the road. No wait, they will have as we still have double deckers on our streets.
Things get a little more focussed as you ascend through the three floors. On the second floor was an exhibition of how cantankerous and discontent Bristolians can be. Displays outlining various uprisings, riots, protests and grumblings were prevalent.
The third floor was, at the time of visiting, was given over to a history of Bristol’s music scene, which was well put together, cohesive, informative, and interesting. Perhaps they should let third floor designer have a rethink of the first floor.
R. F.
Only popped in for a few moments but was lovely and free entry or a small donation. I will be returning when we have longer to properly look around.
P. T.
Fantastic! Free entry and interesting place to get to know history of Bristol
B. L.
One of the better exhibitions in Bristol, tons to see & learn, lots of interactive for kids! Definitely recommend for anyone!
D. G.
Free entry but leave a donation if you can. Great modern museum with lots of interesting displays of life in yesteryear Bristol.
D. O.
If you want a flavour of how Bristol evolved, then this is a good place to start.I lived in Bristol for 30 odd years, and there was a few things I didn't know about the place.
A. D.
Loved the new tattoo exhibit! A must see and totally free for students and young people on Wednesdays :) also look out for the special events they're doing along side it!
D. C.
A pretty unique venue and good to see many of Bristol's famous people celebrated under one roof.
J. W.
Large, complete historical museum showing Bristol's complex and long history. Excellent and free!
S. W.
Came to Bristol for the SS Great Britain and the M shed but both are closed on Mondays so we couldn't visit.
J. W.
Visited the M Shed outside bar on a sunny summer evening. Very busy with limited staff. Ran out of jugs and fruit for Pimm's but scrabbled around for something and gave it to us in 3 pint glasses. Lovely place to watch the sun go down over the harbour if you can get a seat. Only place in Shaping Wharf to get the sun late at night.
L. N.
I visited from London to meet a friend. However the weather was so bad we ducked into the M Shed, but we're so glad we did. We walked through the photography display, which was very interesting and enjoyable. It was also laid out very well with sufficient room to move around and see all the exhibits, especially those of younger entrants, which were amazingly skilled. The staff are kind, helpful and approachable. There are some lovely gifts in the shop. I would have liked to buy some postcards of the exhibits, but they are only available in a coffee table book; which is understandable. Lovely open space feel despite being a museum that is not huge and they pack a lot in, but it doesn't feel constricted in any way. Loved it.
C. R.
The M shed is a great place to spend a few hours getting to know the history of Bristol, fun for all the family and it's in a easy location to get to.
B. A.
Without a shadow of a doubt simply the best museum that I've ever visited! Not only does it describe the formation of Bristol but provides a honest and transparent timeframe of key activities that occurred in the city to make it so progressive and diverse. I wish every city had one of these!
K. W.
Great wedding venue and smashing views
j. r.
A cute free Museum all about Bristol. They often have a paid exhibition as well. This has one of the best views of the harbour, so do that even if museums aren’t your thing.
This should go without saying, but they have a lift so it is accessible and dogs are not allowed.
a. j.
Free to enter. Love M Shed....always interesting.
Plenty to see...and I needed longer. Maybe next time.
N. D.
It wasn’t busy, and we could just wander in. Been before, doesn’t change that much but cool to see history of Bristol etc.
J. M.
Nice historical museum. Free entry. Good gift shop, but the prices were a bit steep.
K. S.
Nice drinks overlooking the harbour.
Z. S.
Went to see Worl Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021, £7 for adults £3 for students and under 24s. Great exhibition, lots of beautiful postcards in gift shop for £0.75.
T. S.
Lots of interesting things to see and read about, for a free entry attraction wats not to like , just don't forget your glasses!
C. M.
What a wonderful way to spend a rainy morning in Bristol! A history rich journey through Bristol's past and present set out in a most accessible way for all the family.
Lots to interact with, lots to see, lots to read and to think about / appreciate as you stroll through the exhibits.
All very well put together too and with the added incentive of a lovely cafe to keep energy levels high!
J. H.
Great place for children of all ages. Nice café too.
S. S.
An excellent place to visit. Took my 4 year old Grandson there yesterday and he did not want to leave.
I. C.
Great museum. My wife and I enjoyed it very much
J. A.
Fantastic place to visit whith lots of interesting things to see and do
M. B.
Definitely somewhere to visit if you want to know about the history of Bristol from a variety of different points of view.
S. G.
The 100s of laminated pictures in the slave trade section scream laziness.
It was abit all over the place. Should be more audio for people with impairments.
P. W.
Great modern museum, very interesting and really well laid out
L. M.
I love this place. It is a great representation of the pride in Bristol for diversity and Bristol's achievements but it doesn't paint over the cracks. I was impressed with the Colston display. Even the way they had it on its side, I think was sensitive to the situation. The information on offer was balanced and impartial and there was a viewpoint of curiosity and focus on the opinions of the public as well. A great showcase.
C. O.
The exhibits at the M Shed were fantastic. In particular the now infamous Edward Colston statue, a big attractions for us and many visitors on out visit. A thorough introduction to the history of Bristol and a must visit when in town.
D. D.
Great place to visit, the history of Bristol music exhibition was fantastic and well worth making a trip there just for that. Go up to the 3rd floor for a great view over the harbour too.
G. H.
This place is a great place to visit. The photography exhibition is excellent. The only disappointment is the cafe. Staff are brilliant, but the whole place needs a makeover, menu needs updating with better food on offer. However, plenty of food outlets nearby and you can still take a packed lunch. We'll worth a visit.
W.
Great place to go for all ages loads of old history stuff takes you right back to being a kid cafe is good for a hot chocolate and coffee good price to great disabled access and toilet facilities baby changing too 😊
D. Y.
Well, first off, the museum is free and there are a lot of things to see. This museum focuses on the people and life in Bristol. The exhibition is very throughout and informative.
On top of that, there is actually a section where they talk about what people in Bristol have stood up for. It is this section that humanizes the city of Bristol.
M. P.
A lovely place to pop in and spend an hour.
Kids really enjoyed it and learnt a lot about the area and history.
Lots of hands on exhibits which helped get the little people interested.
L. D.
Surprisingly good array of exhibitions given its a free museum. Also very receptive to a group visiting with little notice.
L. H.
Pretty cool experience.
R. A.
Really cool place to walk around especially if you’re doing a banksy tour, you’ll see a few on your way!
B. S.
Fill like home there is a map you can find yourarea that really fun
M. H.
Great museum in and about Bristol, extensive galleries, Colston in his rightful place (on his back with background information around; ghastly entity he must have been but not as bad as the people who celebrated him a couple of centuries later), and a temporary street art exhibit that was done well both in curatorial and interpretational respects.
D. B.
Great place to learn the history of Bristol . Clean open museum spaces
T. P.
This is free, but they would like a donation if you can afford it, not a requirement, also lovely cafe, 3 floors, loads of information and displays.
w. s.
Great place to visit. It has the Wildlife Photographic exhibition on at the moment. Absolutely brilliant. Love the exhibitions downstairs too that are free. The shop has some great presents.
M. O.
Great museum on Bristol history. You can feel that the place is alive and regularly updated. The view on the city from the last view is worth the détour.
J. M.
Interesting musuem of things mainly local to Bristol from old to new.
Nice to see so many local stories being captured, not necessarily amazing, but just interesting.
S. P.
Not bad for free. Good way to kill a hour. Just seems a bit dated compared to other Bristol museums.
R. B.
Ok for a free museum. It's quite small. Some interesting artifacts and displays about the history of Bristol. I was done in an hour and felt a bit underwhelmed to be honest.
M. A.
Only popped in to buy a present, but, have been around the displays and found it fascinating.
S. W.
After walking the quayside from the S. S. Great Britain, I couldn't resist a cold beer from this bar/cafe. The M Shed museum is well worth a visit too.
D. R.
Great little museum. Free section is great for a step back into the history of Bristol.
R. R.
Fascinating museum, a quick way to learn about the history of Bristol. Free entry. Handy location.
S. B.
Free entry place, just make a small donation to help keep the place open. A lot of historical information on Bristol and surrounding area
C. D.
Can't really comment on this one as I didn't actually go in. However it does seem to have a lot of different things going on and would definitely visit should I visit the docks again.
A. M.
Good place to kill some time and find out about the history of Bristol. Great view points from the roof top.
a. m.
This is a nice place for some history around Bristol. It’s free entry. It has a nice
Cafe, but limited selection.
J. A.
Great museum. Really interesting exhibits accessible for kids and a good discussion on the slave trade
A.
Went on a weekend and it wasn't that busy, it's free to enter but they do ask for a donation, and as us Brits are we can't say no, but still £5 for 4 hours of entertainment is a steal! Some of the exhibits changed since I went last which I like as it gives variety! The staff were welcoming
N.
More information about Bristol and it’s people than you can possibly digest in one visit. Will be back! Very impressed
K. R.
I was there for the photograph exhibition, which was great.
The M Shed however looked old and tired.
S. A.
This is a fantastic place of historical information. All aspects of the museum was interesting. The space was well utilised, and suitable for all. Good family day out
W. S.
Friendly staff and interesting exhibits. Entry by donation, which gives you more tourist cash to spend in the cafe.
D. M.
I went to see the Edward Colston exhibition. It was really interesting. The staff here were really helpful and even though we came late, let us in.
H. B.
Really nice place. Parking close by which was not over priced. My partner and I attended a wedding at M shed and it was actually such a lovely location particularly at night as you can see from the photos.
A. W.
Came here for a function, however got to have a quick look round whilst there. Excellent venue considering the lack of charge! Some great exhibits to see.
M. T.
Nice museum with lots of stuff inside, but as others have noted, you need to have prior knowledge of Bristol to be able to fully appreciate the items, especially since they are placed in their own section with their own independent histories.
For example, one of the first sections shows the maps of Bristol, but this is meaningless without first looking at the items and being able to directly see what this growth in population meant for its inhabitants.
I think it would strongly benefit from being redesigned with a strong single narrative showing the evolution of the city over time, with the appropriate items from each time period.
Worth a quick browse, but don't expect to learn much if you are not already familiar with Bristol.
P. U.
Lovely place and 📦 of knowledge about Bristol past, present and future.
Specifically take your kids one day and spent a good time there.
S. S.
Interesting promised but failed to deliver. Visiting friends in Bristol for the first time on a bank holiday weekend and was being shown round the regeneration work.
The History of Bristol exhibition has some great content as it gallops through the city's long history. The displays were jumbled up but there was a good range of topics.
The experience was sullied by the disappointed kids and adults faced with the laminated 'This interactive is currently out of order....' signs on most of the fun bits.
J. S.
Great exhibits. Loved the wildlife photography upstairs, all of the pictures were incredible. Haven’t been to the cafe but it looked nice from what I saw. Will return when they have a new special exhibit on. Great location as well.
G. R.
Not the best museum I’ve been to but it’s not bad at all, if you have spare time I’d recommend
D. G.
Well designed interior and good wealth of information and displays about Bristol and its people. All of the interactive elements were not working, presumably due to covid which was a shame.
G. H.
Free entry into a small museum of Bristol history. Very informative. The site is right next to the harbour and numerous food venues. Well worth a visit.
W. M.
Always a great place to visit and it's free. See something different every visit. Great harboursife cafe.
J.
Quite nice museum focusing on local history. Plenty to learn about Bristol, its neighbourhoods and the events and people that made it. Doesn't shy away from difficult and controversial topics (toppling of the Colston statue, slavery in general), but discusses them respectfully and with context. Free entry, staff were really nice, masks required inside.
M. D.
Had a lovely time kids enjoyed all the hands on things, my little grandson loved the old bus, all topped off with a lovely coffee. As entry is free a good value family day.
A. M.
A decent museum with some interesting exhibits. A good idea to have a quick look since it's free, but don't expect too much.
J. A.
Detailed, informative museum of Bristol, it's people and history. Very well done immersive and interactive, hands on displays - perfect for conveying facts to youngsters in an entertaining way. Highly recommended.
D. w.
Great little museum, really friendly staff as well..
Some interesting and thought provoking exhibits too.
L. M.
Very good value of money
D.
Free to visit. Full of the history of Bristols involvement in the slave trade and how the city has moved forward.
B.
Not really sure who they are aiming at, it feels like it's targeted at children yet the information and exhibits are too confusing or of no interest to children or understandable by them at all
D. H.
Beautiful space- here for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, a stunning show.
C. B.
You don't get much for free (or a donation) nowadays. Cracking museum on Bristol's history.
J. W.
Great place, we came to see the Tattoo exhibition. Really enjoyed it. Staff friendly. Great if you have kids
N. C.
It was great. Great food after walking by the city all morning!
M. H.
Lively. Lots of details about Bristol, especially from the local viewpoints. They have bits in; Bristol neighbourhoods, the history of the port/s and protest through the years as well as Bristol's links to slavery and the Edward Coulston statue.
However, I'm not sure this is great for families (lots of reading). And overall it feels like it lacks focus and context; I didn't really get a story (or history) of Bristol.
Overall really good :-)
K. K.
A great place to pop in and learn about Bristol. Really good for a rainy day pit stop, and also lovely when the suns out to enjoy a drink on the outside terrace.
J. H.
Went especially to c any banksy works .
P. S.
We only took in the free exhibitions but there was plenty to see about the history of Bristol. Kids and grown ups alike enjoyed it. Friendly and helpful team looking after visitors. I would definitely recommend and recommend booking too.
G. W.
Very nice well arrange museum of everything Bristol.
L. A.
Lots to see In there. Admission is donation. There is a cafe there as well if you want refreshments.
P. S.
Well worth a visit, friendly staff and good exhibits.
E. C.
Pretty good, as Museums go. Liked the comments on places from locals, but the screens in the exhibits controlled poorly and very few exhibits were interactive which makes this a poor family choice. Otherwise it is free, so good if you are in the area and have half hour to kill, though I suggest booking ahead to skip the queues.
G. G.
Good museum, well laid out, lots of friendly staff.
N. R.
Super place. Great exhibition on April 2018 love the old Bristol Lodecca
M. S.
Great museum and it’s free! Donations gratefully accepted.
L. G.
Good way of spending an afternoon no charge and good selection of exhibits
d. p.
An interesting and educational exhibition on the social history of Bristol. Well worth a few hours of your time.
After your visit I suggest that you avoid the cafe until it stops using its intrusive data gathering app required to place an order. There are numerous little cafes and restaurants a few metres away where you will be welcome without providing your life history.
A. S.
Can’t believe I haven’t been before. Kids loved it - lots of interesting things on display - nice to see some previously unknown history of your home town.
j.
Lovely place to visit. Loads to see and usually has an interesting exhibition on too. Have enjoyed every visit! Can pop in and out and entertain small people on the docks. Really good for school trips too, had a really good one there where staff were extremely helpful and knowlegable. Nice cafe too.
S. O.
Colston Statue was brilliant to see. A slave trader now in his rightful place, no longer taking pride of place.
a. w.
I went, this time, for the Street Art Exhibition, which was superb. I thought I was a little clued up but this let me into so much more about names, history and events. So well out together and exhibitors are clear some if the views given are not necessarily there's.
I have previously been to see the Colston statue display which was disappointing.
However the M Shed remains an absolute gem and and total must see if visiting Bristol or you want to know this great city better.
G. B.
Wonderful museum and venue. Staff were extremely helpful and professional.
M.
My Father was an Aero Engine Inspector and worked on Concorde. After retiring he was proud to work at M Shed, conducting tours of the Conorde exhibit. M Shed is really worth visiting and has so much fascinating history. We also visited the Great Britain, a marvellous site. There is a souvenir shop and cafe nearby. Cannot wait to return.
D.
If you are in Bristol then this is a great place to visit.
A. H.
Lovely museum which we always enjoy but the cafe was such a disappointment today- all our food came at different times and very late, kids hot chocolates were enormous adult size (resulting in sugar mad children…) and when we queried it there was no offer of replacement. Coffee was burnt and gave me a banging headache. Shame as a great museum and so many nice options in wapping wharf which we will choose next time
D. M.
Hi very nice and interesting :) free entry .. lot thingy you see :)
S. W.
About Bristol, obviously. Would have been interesting to have more information about slavery and links to the city.
a.
Nice museum that has works from Bansky and some history of Bristol and its global trade. There is also a public balcony at the very top!
C. H.
Great way to get to know Bristol's history and to see one of Banksy's amazing artwork.
A. S.
A centre for exhibitions plus local matters of interest. A good asset for the city. Wheelchair accessible, excellent toilets.
i. m. A.
I'm amazed how the own shipping containers turns into stores👍 I think it's a clever idea. The view from top of the museum also is nice. Friendly staff.
J. R.
M shed, and exhibits themselves were amazing, but the cafe, especially for the prices was awful, the food not bad but the cook doesn't know the difference between a bacon bap and a bacon sandwich and served us the cheaper bap option even tho we paid of the more expensive sandwich option, staff in cafe weren't great, most every table had food and dirt on, when we did pick a table and asked for them to clean it, they just wiped everything on the floor and that was it. Just won't be going to that cafe again, but please do visit the rest of the M shed, can never be disappointed with that.
C. C. L.
Very good. I imagine it's even more interesting if you live locally because you can relate to some of the stories. Good location , free, and covid safe because only so many people are allowed in at once. Some of the artefacts on show are fascinating and the tales of Bristol's past are sensitively told
R. M.
Great this is a small museum in the heart of Bristol by the doc side and certainly worth a visit would probably allow 1-2 hours for a visit staff very friendly and helpful.
L.
Went to see a bit of Banksy enjoyed the whole exhibit
R. D.
A lot of audio visual stuff not working, but a good museum nonetheless.
T. H.
Fabulous place for the whole family loads to see and do
T. M.
Great place for a rainy day. Lovely museum and it's free! Due to covid you need to book a slot in advance. Our kids love it, there's there's double decker bus to climb in, a map of Bristol so you can find where you stay, dress up and loads of other things!
The tip floor is special exhibits. We always book tickets for the wildlife photographer of the year. For the specials you have to pay but these are reasonably priced.
J. B.
Proper museum for proper peoples.
The real history of ordinary Bristolians and people who've made Bristol their home.
I'm now a traveller, but if you ask me to nominate a city or town to be called my favourite "nomadic home", it would be Bristol.
c. C.
Great to pass time. My kids love a visit to this place
N. H.
Been to this place a couple of times now. Loved the street art exhibition and all the local history.
Recommend to bay museum enthusiasts.
Ps I only ever give a 5 or 1 star review.
T.
Very well layed out and informative museum.
G. R.
Went to the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition, which was incredible. The rest of the museum is a really nice way to pass an hour
J. C.
Its for me a place to go if it is raining. The cost of the food inside is very high family of 4 £50 but very good and lots. Nice place to sit a look at the rain.
N. K.
Once you have covered the famous attractions on Harbour front in Bristol, spend an hour or two to relax. Nothing out of the box here.
A. S.
Great space. Really good history of Bristol and it's people. Easy to make donations on contactless card
J. F.
Only asks for donations, it's not very big but it's quite enjoyable, about Bristol and the people of Bristol.
P. R.
Enjoyed the Slavery section. Good coffee not sure about food. Catch the ferry.
L. W.
Great museum space and galleries. We visited the Wildlife Photographer Of The Year exhibition and as always it is very well laid out.
Good Covid precautions and not overcrowded.
G. S.
Fantastic place, great location by the docks lots of places to eat afterwards. We saw the vanguard Street art exhibition which was absolutely amazing, we also saw the Colston statue very moving in is new place with demonstrator placards and graffiti still present on the statue This place it's definitely worth a visit, we spent 3 hours here
P. C.
The food is alright, the staff is great and friendly. And the location is pretty spectacular.
v. g.
Excellent museum located along the riverside. Found exhibits very interesting, particularly about the local people who have contributed to the lives of people living in Bristol and the museum is currently housing the toppled Edward Colston statue with a very informative timeline of his life and events leading up to the removal of the statue. Would definitely visit again if visiting Bristol
E. R.
Really fascinating place to visit. Whether you're a fan of Bristol or just like being around so much history, it's a great place to go to see some truly unique and special things that have made bristol what it is today.
A.
Great place for a day out in Bristol, lots of nice shop's, stalls and historical boats. A free entry museum is also available with interesting and fun features and a steam train outside which you can ride on. Some great places to dine, although some are more pricey than others and last but not least the SS.Great.Britain if you want to see what being on ship was like during the 19th century. Even if you haven't got a lot of money, the kids can still have fun paddling in the fountains and enjoy a ice cream.
J. H.
Strange, not sure what it's about museum. OK if it's raining but not a big draw.
C. B.
Interesting history of Bristol on display and a Banksy to see.
M. L.
Always a pleasure to visit M Shed. Don't miss the top floor balcony overlooking the marina and docks!
A. C.
This is my first time to the M shed, it was real interesting to see how Bristol use to be in the past, Its free which is bonus in my books, would I visit this place again, yes there is so much to see.
C. G.
Had a good visit, however, the top floor was closed to the public. Reason for 4 stars is the exhibits haven't really changed since my last visit several years ago
J. B.
Definitely worth a visit if you're interested in the history of Bristol and for the Grim Reaper Banksy of course
A.
The place is nice and clean and there are lots to see about the history of the area and the industrialisation and what happened.
D. A.
Great place to visit. The cafe was fantastic my friend is gluten free both the wazitres and the chef came out to see how they could help. They are both to be apllauded for their dedication to customer care 100% I would use the cafe again because of them.
C. D.
At the moment, it's hosting the Wildlife photographer of the year, a great & inspiring exhibition. Well worth queuing for. Very slow service in the cafe, though.
B. C.
Great sausage. Good beers. Friendly staff.
t. B.
Informative exhibition. Worth a visit
j. c.
What a great way to while away a few hours and it's free too, great to learn about Bristol and its history, definitely worth a visit
P. M.
Loved learning about Bristol history only downside was entrance / ticket office staff did not give any clear direction wete abrupt and u communicative. We didnt actulaaly know where to go or what to do. Not a good welcome for vistors to our lovely city.
J. R.
Surprisingly interesting museum about Bristol. Covers its history as you would expect but also more modern times, including an exhibit on BLM and the Edward Colston statue. Could have done with more than a cursory nod to LGBT history, but other than that was a nice museum with interesting pieces.
P. W.
A Bristol attraction but I was expecting it to be more 'Bristol orientated' than it was. A lot of the displays didn't seem very unique to Bristol.
For me, there aren't enough aerospace or bus, car or sea port displays - things people from other parts of the country would associate with Bristol and might be expecting to enjoy.
J. D.
Excellent museum, really interesting. Suit adults and children alike. Liked the old Bristol area. Highly recommend, plus free entry but can leave a donation.
S. C.
Really enjoyed this museum, local history with modern updates. Loved the Street Art gallery which was showing when we visited. Free to go in but an extra £8 for the gallery which was well worth paying.
e. r. b.
This is a fantastic place located on the dockside at Bristol, a free museum of fascinating curiosities and local history (and recent history) which provides a great escape from the bustling centre nearby. There are some visiting exhibitions which might require an entry fee. There are interactive bits for kids (and adults) and a wonderful cafe for a great snack and drink. Well worth a visit on any day of the year.
M. M.
A great museum, free to get in and interesting exhibits. Particularly enjoyed the air raid shelter and the old fashioned bus.
U. S.
Nice place for new people in Bristol to know about the city
M. N.
Really good way to get to know Bristol, past and present. Good to see the darker history of Bristol - slavery - exhibited not hidden. Lots of interactive exhibits, good for both children and adults. Free to public, including visitors to area - donations welcomed. Good, reasonably priced gift shop and cafes.
h. b.
Excellent exhibitions and the wildlife photography exhibition is stunning. Lovely to enjoy the harbour side.
r. b.
Fascinating insight to history of Bristol and such helpful people around, thank you...
L. W.
Fantastic exhibition! Really enjoyable interesting and interactive. Learned loads about Bristol and loved how much different voices and 'ordinary' individuals were heard and honoured!
A.
Great local museum. Giving lots of local historical information.
C. B.
M shed is a very interesting area in the old Dock land. There's so much information about different areas of the city and what's happened to them in the past a very nice piece of social history and an insight to how Bristol has developed over the ages so much to take in a place that I will return to. There's a nice little play area for young children and an area we're mum or dad can sit while I was there it seemed to be well used by local people and visitors alike.
The cafe area was clean and offered a good selection of food I only tried the coffee but it was good.
D. L.
We went to see the wildlife photography exhibition which was amazing. Also browsed the rest of the museum which gave a wonderful history of Bristol.
M. R.
Really interesting museum looking at the social history of Bristol and how it grew from its early roots. Very interactive and lots of excellent memorabilia including an old bus you can climb aboard. The grandparents in the many families there were taken right back to their childhood! If you allow up to an hour you'll cover most of it.
J. B.
It is always great showing our new visitors this museum. It allows them to grasp what being in Bristol is all about
T. E.
Only popped in to see the tattoo exhibit that was showing recently. The facilities looked great, the buildings and its surroundings were lovely I could have stayed all day looking around.
The tattoo exhibit that was there was brilliant, very interesting to learn the history and some of the prominent artists too. Loved the 100 hand wall!
L.
Very educational, free museum in bristol and good for a little break whilst in the area
Z. M.
Highly recommended for fun filled facts about Bristol and keep an eye out for featured exhibitions that never disappoint.
Always worth a revisit when visitors come to town 😊
J. P.
Good museum. Clearly made sure it had displays for most areas of the city.
L. M.
Great museum for the family, lots to see
E.
My daughter enjoyed her time at the museum
E. A.
M Shed is a wonderful museum by Bristol's harbourside, a great location. It has permanent displays as well as temporary exhibitions. I have seen more than one photography exhibition there, and also the delightful Briswool show at hand-knitted artefacts a few years ago. A great place for families.
J. B.
Free entry, but well worth making a donation.
A look at Bristol through the ages and more besides.
A. P.
Brilliant museum with a mixture of history and art.
s. H.
We had such an amazing time here.
We were welcomed by team with big smiles, and everyone was so helpful.
M Shed had to much to offer and a very large collection of interesting things. Highly recommended to all ages.
Additionally, we loved the café outside which had a wonderful view.
r. b.
Much diminished since it first opened. A little sad now, disappointing visit.
S. M.
A really good museum, expanded my knowledge of Bristol greatly. Some really interesting exhibits and I learned a lot. We Particularly like the exhibit on the Colston statue.
Covid processes were responsible and easy to follow.
A. W.
Absolutely amazing place to visit. Great history of Bristol on show. Good for any age.
E.
Wonderful museum - would highly recommend to anyone visiting! I particularly liked the exhibtion on the toppled Colston statue (on till September 2021) - It was well presented with lots of fascinating information on history, plus the importance of history and memory in modern culture and society.
J. H.
A good experience indeed. Lots to see and study about Bristol and the surrounding area. Smashing cake in the cafe too!
M. C.
Another example of a museum that spends its funds on glossy infrastructure instead of exhibits. The old museum standby of WW2 gas masks were there of course, but lacking were a lot of exhibits I remember from years ago. Really good to see the very real shameful side of Bristols history explored and the recent BLM and Colston statue protests explored
P. G.
Only been here once...nice friendly, helpful staff on the night I went. The last Tattoo Night it was great, hope it happens again...a all day one would be great.
M. R.
Museum was very colourful and interesting to know about Bristol's history.
However, the layout was a bit complicated to follow.
A. A.
Beautiful Museum Beautiful History of Britian Specially Bristol
A. C.
Excellent free museum, do give a donation at rhe door though, it's really worth it! Lots of things to do for all ages and abilities. Overlooks the floating harbour and has a great coffee shop, what more do you need! Very child friendly.
J. C.
Good local museum. Probably not of much interest if you are not from Bristol area. They have some good temporary exhibitions. Nice outside cafe area.
C. B.
Fantastic place to learn about Bristol history.
Lots of interactive content.
I would advise leaving a 2hr minimum time for going round the whole place.
Great for the whole family but ideally aimed at 10+ so they understand and don't rush you
At the reception desk you can get kids activity packs.
Free entry but donations are greatly appreciated.
The cafe although nice is expensive.
There are several car parks nearby (all pay and display or ncp) so bring approx £4 in change or some do use an app.
I really enjoyed myself here having a look around and I will be returning in the near future
S. P.
Really went for the Wildlife Photography of the Year which was awesome but great a great visit and tea and cake in the afternoon!!
R. B.
We did not like it. More fitted for kids education.
R. W.
Quite interesting place to visit, entrance free, just make a donation if you want. Good for kids with some interactive displays
R. D.
Went for Radio Bristol audition got through on 3 year's great waiting for round 2
..
If you are from Bristol you'll love this place - delves into the history of the great city, massively interesting
O. V.
A good place to learn the history of Bristol. The floor map is great fun, and the cafe served really good food when we've been.
Went back for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards, great location for it and was a lot of fun to go to.
Would definitely go back again.
M. B.
Great museum about Bristol history. I couldn't see it all in a day but it was very interesting and interactive. I would gladly go back.
S. M.
An excellent local museum which is both interactive and engaging.
Very interesting displays about the origins of the city and more recent information neighbourhood by neighbourhood.
Plenty of information about maritime heritage, slavery, manufacturing and the arts. A great place for all ages in any weather.
I. F.
This place is a great place to take young people and visitors to Bristol. It's super accessible, really well suited for prams and kids too. There is a lovely little coffee shop and gift shop, the exhibitions are usually really interesting too!
A.
It's a bit confusing as to what is supposed to be a paid for exhibit and which part is free, maybe I missed the really obvious signs. So we eventually went into the free Bristol history part and really enjoyed it. The information is well laid out and the smalls enjoyed the interactive parts. I hope to go back sometime without the small people as then I'll get to read more than one and a half boards. You know how it goes.
P. W.
Great Museum - well worth the visit. Explore the rich history of Bristol through the interactive permanent displays and excellent temporary exhibitions. Stories told by the people through thematic galleries, People, Place and Life gallery. Wide range of archives and objects on display. One of the highlights is the green double-decker bus! Other exhibits such as boats, trains and cranes run at weekends, kept running by volunteers, with behind the scenes tours during the week. A great city history museum.
E. W.
Great place to spend an hour or 2 browsing the museum. Lots of really interesting displays/information on Bristol. I learnt loads. Loved seeing the original Banksy piece from the Thekla. My 19 month old enjoyed wandering around and seeing the exhibits and having a little play in the kids area on the 1st floor, so I would say this place is child friendly. Seeing that this place is free to enter, you can’t go wrong really.
V. P.
Very interesting museum that covers the history of Bristol under so many different aspects! I have really appreciated the section related to the local people that have made the difference in the community and also the support to Pride :) Absolutely recommended :)
C. K.
Always worth a visit. This was my second visit. But not my last. Will come back.
Plus - changing exhibits. Interesting temp features
Minus - sometimes a bit crowded
C. M.
Brilliant lots of local history through time, Bristol has lots to put right. Fantastic prints of lots if artists, not just the obvious one
Great history.
C. B.
Nice indoor experience down on the docks. Fre entry. Cafe was a bit odd - no little snack for little people to take through.
P. H.
If I could give these guys 7 from 5 it wouldn't be too much.
Fab staff, everyone 110%
Brilliant beyond words.
And the crane.....
W. B.
Great museum showcasing the history of Bristol and its development. The museum had free entrance and a number of interesting finds. Some items are note as clearly labeled as one would like but the issues are few and far between.
M.
Such an interesting thing to view. History is presented in such a fun way
P. M.
Loved it had a great fay out with the boy.

A wonderful museum with a good sized shop 3 floors lots to see. The view over Bristol from the roof is spectacular. The Ardman exhibits are well worth the visit alone. The only let down was the food in the cafeteria my sandwich seemed to have been made in the 1920’s ! Thoroughly recommend except for the very poor quality food in the cafeteria.

The whole family loves this museum. You can learn so much about the people of Bristol, its past and its contribution to the rest of the world. Great interactive displays with occasional unique exhibitions on the top floor. It also boasts an elevated view across the harbour. Give youself a couple of hours to explore

Interesting mixture of items. Plus cooling air conditioning
D. C.
Really good interactive history of Bristol. Need more time!
D. W.
It's a fascinating place with lots of interactive things for the kids and plenty of material to read for all. The history of Bristol is very interesting and to break it up into the various neighbourhoods / areas is a very good way of doing it. Having been several times there is always something I learn having missed it before. Whilst they haven't updated the main body of the M Shed material (it's a free museum) the upstairs space does play host to exhibitions (at a small charge).

Very interesting and impressive for free admission. Large collection of Bristol based memorabilia in a beautiful old building on the waterfront. Close to the City and a multitude of food option available inside and in surrounding area. Well worth a visit for adults and children alike.

We went to the Colston exhibition which was really interesting and well done. We wandered through the other galleries too which were great as always and bought some gifts from the shop. Perfect.
R. A.
Fascinating experience. We both grew up in Bristol but left for Cornwall in 1969. We love the whole dockside experience but especially M Shed. The guided tour to see the items NOT on display was marvellous. Our volunteer guide kept us enthralled for nearly three hours! An excellent restaurant too.

A really interesting look into the life of Bristol. It's not a large museum, but has a really good range of things and is still laid out. Out front wasa steam train that I believe went between the museum and the SS Great Britain. It was busy when we were there, but it was during the school holidays so lots of children!
s. h.
Always enjoy the feature exhibition (history of tattoos at the moment) really well laid out and interesting. Also good fun to find where you live on the big map on the ground floor! Cafe is lovely too with tables outside for tea and cake on the river whilst watching the steam train go up and down!

Interesting museum about Bristol's history. Pre Covid times there were lots of interactive things for kids but haven't been since to know what it's currently like in covid times. Really worth a visit though as it's really interesting. Nice café too!
M. B.
Really liked the way it tells the story of the different parts of Bristol. Great way to connect with the people. Very disappointed as to how the issue of slavery was covered, so many mentions of "only being involved in it for 100 years"! Liverpool and London do a much better job.
S.
I really enjoyed this museum. I like learning about the history of Bristol and I really enjoyed the disability history in Bristol too. Lots to see. More of a half day activity rather than a whole day but there is plenty more things to do and they are only a short walk away.
A. J.
Went for a conference. Nice place.

Very lovely museum about the history and culture of Bristol. I'm not a fan of museums in general but this one was nice, you'll have an interesting presentation of the parts of the city, pics and things from the past and it's very recommended for kids thanks to some entertaining activities. Free entrance!

Is a very good day out and a lot of opportunities for people volunteering
S. D. L.
My favourite museum! Bristol history and its boroughs is presented in an interactive way. Lots of vintage installations and objects rebuilt as they were! Always new exhibitions and events. Just check online what's going on
K. H.
Love this place. Visited the opening night of the new tattoo exhibition which is just fab. So many interesting things to see, and a great look at local bristol artists too. I defy you to not spend a good few hours here marvelling at all the sights!! Staff are friendly and it's always bright and clean.
H. C.
It is free exhibition for kids and adults both very stimulating and fun. It has a nice coffee shop with vegan and gluten free options and a shop to buy a gift. There are good toilet facilities for wheelchair and baby changing and an area for little kids to play upstairs.
B. N.
Great place to read and look at the history of Bristol from pre/historic times to present. Was particularly interested in the ww2 section as Bristol was heavily bombed in the war, how they fought the fires from pumping water from the quayside, over the buildings. Thought moving testimonies of people who lived through it. Nice to visit somewhere so interesting to the area and free. Staff very helpful. Great place to visit if the weather is bad. Place was very busy when we visited.
P. A.
A great place to visit with the kids.
s. B.
Free to vist nice little bit of history
A. W.
Out of all the museums I have visited, I would rank this one amongst the top. Telling the story of if Bristol and the surrounds was very interesting and pleasant to walk through. Time was not on my side so it is a place I would revisit on my next trip to Bristol.
S. m. v.
Brilliant Museum free admission but donation of 5 pounds is welcomed. There is a gift shop not badly priced and decent loos. Exhibitions are also held here. It includes historical information about all different parts of Bristol as ND includes a double decker green bus which will bring back memories for the older ones and make knew memories for the younger ones. It covers several floors but there are easily accessible lifts.
E. A.
Very great experience there, very unique to a first timer, unfortunately only 3 stars. there's alot of exhibitions that weren't open and that we couldn't see which we were looking quite forward to seeing.
Also alot of the interactive stuff was turned off, understandably... However it really does take alot away from the experience.. However I'd still fully recommend going to check it out, the staff are really nice people too.
Great customer service.

The free exhibits were really interesting, especially the Colston statue which was very striking and thought provoking. The paid exhibition "Vanguard" is absolutely worth the fee, and then some!
P. B.
Lovely venue for a shindig. Was fortunate to be on the top floor with the balcony so a nice view of the water and millennium square by night.
M. L. P.
Terrible cafe options the worst hummus sandwich i had in my life so expensive £5.95
Don't eat here!
Amazing must see exhibition when you are in Bristol, all Bristol's history, modern nice look and check out the temporary exhibitions too. I've been here 3 times, enjoyed it all occasions, highly recommend the museum
K. ,.
Small interesting museum plus great photography exhibition and cafe outside to chill.
L. P.
Parking was difficult, as it wasn't sign posted. But really enjoyed the Wildlife Photography, and we were warmly welcomed at the door.
S. H.
It wasn't as big or interactive as I had imagined. It was lovely to have a look around and learn the history of Bristol, however if you've got small children they could get board quickly. Would happily go back again though
J. B.
Great wildlife photography exhibit on when we visited. Curious (& fun) selection of Bristol related memorabilia downstairs and ludicrously overpriced cafe (though son said hot chocolate worth every penny). Very friendly staff, well worth a visit. Will bring sandwiches/drinks though next time.
s. c.
M Shed is absolutely fantastic.
It is a fascinating insight into the history of of Bristol.
Full of fascinating information and displays.
It's completely free entry which is amazing.
There is a lovely café selling lovely food and drinks too. A must visit
L. J.
Really liked the M Shed. Some cool exhibits and info on Bristol. A little sporadic on the layout but definitely worth a visit!
S. A.
Family friendly and awesome history for all to acknowledge. .our part in the history of slave trade...we must learn. ..then lovely exhibition of Bristol carnival....the public can start to feel they are putting the past firmly behind them...with Brexit looming let us not make the same mistake please!
K. D.
cool place. permanent exhibition present fascinating history of Bristol in a comprehensive, multisensory way (suitable for all abilities). it's free to enter and staff is amazingly friendly. I suppose it's a good place for kids as well.
c.
Nice day out, free to visit and a lot of things to see, does get boring after a while though
J. M.
Lots of interesting displays, interactive, light and varied. We liked the transport section. It never seems too crowded. We don't use the refreshments so can't comment on those. We do like the information and large poster displays.
J. E.
Fabulous displays...really interesting and engaging for all ages
M. R.
The M Shed is another fantastic free museum showcasing a fascinating collection of Bristol memorabilia. My young daughter loves it there. It is a great way to invest a couple of hours of time if you are visiting the city centre.
The cafe is spacious and has some good items on the menu, and the views from the cafe across the waterfront are beautiful.
S. B.
Fantastic morning at the mshed fun, informative and interesting. Although I was sad to see that all the narrative was only in English.
J. B.
Fabulous half day exploring, with a wrist band we could have come back but sadly had other places to visit too. We will definitely re-visit as there is plenty more to see and do. Two of the highlights for us were the robot session - children could interact and engage at various levels. I won't post any spoilers! And also the planetarium. All of the exhibits we saw were interactive and fantastically fun to do. As a thank you for opting for gift aid, we were given a voucher to spend in the shop or cafe, we exchanged ours for coffee and drinks. Would definitely recommend.
G. D.
Just saw the two Banksys, the café and shop, but nice atmosphere, friendly staff and well presented exhibits. Free too.
S. M.
First visit to Bristol. Found the M shed to be a vibrant and enjoyable way to learn about the city, its history, areas and also its future which i found novel. Certainly this isn't a stuffy or formalised museum.
My kids absolutely loved the travelling display of skeletons and the interactive learning experience. The best bit of science they've done in ages.
Around the M shed are plenty of other activities so i would definitely recommend a visit.
H. R.
A good place to learn about Bristol. I had someone from. Bristol with me he explained some things. He did not like the way it was layer out in boroughs
A. Q.
Great visit. Was here for the wildlife photographer of the year display. Had a quick look in the Bristol museum section too. Was very good will be back for a better look at the Bristol museum soon. Nice blueberry Victoria cake too.
A. U.
Wonderful place to come with a family, your date or a tourist. Entertaining, engaging and extremely well laid out.
Enjoy leaning something new about Bristol, especially if you just moved in here or visiting for few days.
L. L.
Very informative and plenty to read. We had to pre-book due to covid but throughly worth a trip, you'll be there longer than you thought. Note there is no cafe inside but several eateries etc outside.
B. V.
The perfect place to introduce people to Bristol. The behind the scenes tour is excellent, I can’t recommend it enough!
R. H.
Plenty to see here if you take the time to read the information that accompanies the exhibits. Visited with a 9 and 13 year old and kept us entertained for an hour and a half.
A. M.
This is such a great museum! It has a wonderful exhibition about Bristol, as well as great temporary exhibits. You could pop in for ten minutes, or spend an afternoon there. The gift shop is also great! Lovely cards, mugs and toys.
C. G.
An excellent place to find out the history and development of Bristol. We only spent a few hours in here but could easily have spent longer. Entrance is free (apart from any visiting exhibits) but a a donation of £5 is suggested. The cafe serves the usual sandwiches, toasties, soup and cakes and isn't stupidly expensive.
A. S.
A great new-ish museum which is full of local information about Bristol, as well as other items of interest. It is where the tour of Wildlife Photographer of the Year stops in Bristol, usually in January. Offers free entry to all exhibits every Friday. I once attended a wedding in the conferencing suite on the top floor, which has excellent view of Bristol Docks and more.
S. B.
Museum was good but the cafe was awful. I have to create an Account and give my card details to order a drink! Come on, everywhere else is contactless.
C. g.
Fab museum and exhibition! Loved the cafe too. All felt covid secure, with masked staff, one way system and qr code for app. Such a great venue. Loved the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition, brilliant as always. Many thanks M Shed!
N. B.
Went there for a works Christmas party. Staff and food good. Unfortunately they forgot our table when serving the main course. The one person having vegetarian was brought theirs and we waited for ours. In the end we had to ask, a good 5-10 minutes later. Very apologetic and it arrived very quickly then. I would have given 5 stars otherwise.
R. W.
Very interesting if you are from Bristol or near. Also makes for a brilliant day out and free!!!!!
There is a cafe there as well............. This is not free. He he.
Even an old bus there you can board(unlike at car shows) lots and lots to see. REALLY worth a visit. Parking there too if your lucky as we were. That was free too.

Not bad for a museum. I guess I would have enjoyed it more if there was a bit more guidance in going around. Like a trail to follow to see more of Bristol's history. But it's all just packed in there and you don't know where to begin. Still worth a visit though.
L. T.
FREE to enter, voluntary contribution.
Great fixed exhibition on ground floor, about Bristol's history, lots of memorabilia. Great for kids, as lots of hands on items.
Changeable exhibitions on upper floors.
Cafe and toilets on site.
Disabled access and lifts to Upper floors.
T.
An interesting enough free collection of exhibits on local history and culture. Frequent paid for exhibits also such as the brilliant Wildlife Photography of the Year. All well kept and housed on Bristol harbourside.
Not somewhere to spend an entire day but good for an hour or two.
R.
Brilliant day out for the kids lots of things to play with and areas to explore.
The big green bus is a definite favourite along with the the shop on the top floor.
The play area is out of commission at the time I wrote this but it's due to be open soon.
The play area is small with limited resources but is a nice addition to the whole experience.
P.
Very, big and very well laid out interesting museum. Lots to see and do for people of all ages, Bristolian or not!
There's even a lovely cafe which does a good selection of food and drinks, reasonably priced.
R. S.
Staff at counter very helpful and friendly. General exhibitions were interesting with lots of interactive displays. The wildlife photographer of the year that was on during our visit was excellent. The photos were brilliantly displayed with eye-opening information and stunning images.
G. S.
Really good museum. Go there every time we visit Bristol and it's always interesting
A. B.
Really good museum based on Bristol, only went to the first floor as I was passing, really fun to learn more About my home city. Great outside drinking space also, sun all day.
M. W.
Absolutely brilliant, needed more time to really appreciate it. Will definitely be returning. The café was well priced and both the food and beverage were great.
R. E.
Really interesting museum about the history of Bristol. Free to enter and great for kids. Really good places to eat and drink close by. Also a short walk away from SS Great Britain the world's first iron hulled ship.
J. O.
So much to see Excellent variations on ways to look at Bristol development and people involved, from rich and famous to general public. Very interactive. Lots for young and old. Too much to do at once and all for free, though donation requested.
A. B.
Brilliant... very interesting.
Love the bus .
Z. P.
Great spot for Bristol history, some excellent art and a very good collection of locally contributed material.
R. A.
This place offers a great insight to Bristol and it's free, unless you donate of .course
S. T.
Went to the M Shed to attend the Wild Life Photographer of the yeay exhibition. Its a very interesting place with a permanent museum displaying Bristol's history. There is a shop and a cafe. Clean toilets, a small children's play area. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Definately worth a visit.
G. B.
Most of the museum you can visit for free and there's plenty to keep children entertained; sitting area with baby/toddler toys, double decker bus to climb in and trails for the older kids to name a few. The exhibition area upstairs is chargeable but hosts a variety of displays and I've found it well worth a visit. I've dropped a star as the prices in the café are rather steep and the interactive displays are often out of order.
B. M.
The m shed was a interesting place with different themes on each floor! it focuses on bristol people which I think is great for the city of Bristol! i enjoyed the music floor which was quite interactive and fun! however the only reason I gave 4 not 5 was because quite a lot of the interactive displays weren't working which was a real shame!
R. E.
It's always a joy to visit M Shed especially if you are interested in the history of Bristol. The café serves a great flat white coffee and on a nice day you can sit outside overlooking the harbour and if the railway is operating watch the trains go by......🚂
K. P.
Great place to learn all about key figures, places and times of Bristol, its free and great to visit as family, the area surrounding has lots going on and great range of food options and other things to do too. To be honest, you need more than a day to see everything, especially if with children ;-)
T. T.
Large museum showcasing local history with a good range of exhibits, including vehicles, artefacts and displays.. Great location on the waterside, so plenty to explore nearby. Very interesting and worth a visit. Even better, it's free entry.
A. C.
Lots of good stuff. An eclectic mix of exhibitions. A great view over Bristol harbour from the upper floors. And entry to the main museum is free! Although donation is appreciated.
