Reviews of The Georgian House Museum

Under-visited museum that's well worth a look around in my view. It's centrally located and donation-based for entry.
We were shown around by a really informative guide who was able to make the visit a more storied experience. It's quite tardis-like, with lots to see on four? floors.
The rooms contain original furniture and I think the whole place offered a real insight into class and society in the Georgian era. It does feel odd touring a place with deep ties to the trade in enslaved people, but the curators have made some effort to acknowledge that role and encourage visitors to ask questions and explore it.
There's a small gift shop selling local books and a few other bits and bobs, but no food to my knowledge (although Park Street is a minute or two's walk away!). Most floors were not accessible as far as I could see.

Interesting museum to visit. It is basically an old preserved house of a controversial historical figure. Can be finished in 30 minutes or less.

I believe many people simply walk by here and don't stop in. I myself have been guilty of this many times. But I would advise you to stop one of these days as this is a nicely crafted peek into the Georgian world with rooms to visit and excellent guides who can tell you everything you want to know. Also it's free, so no more excuses, go and visit 😀

We arrived half an hour before closing & we were made to feel welcome & given an interesting tour by the staff, I will be visiting again when next in Bristol as I loved the history of this house, thank you for taking us on a whistle stop tour of this beautiful house.

A lovely period priority in Bristol city, worth a visit and interesting history!

Thanks so much to our fantastic guide for such a great experience. He was an x history teacher - who was so knowledgeable, interesting and really brought the House to life, in a sensitive, culturally appropriate way. I would encourage you visit.

Well, it be a nice enough period property, for a merchant of modest means. I confess it brought back good memories of when I was alive. However, it's a tad small for a chap who made a living through providing unpaid employment to persons of Africa. Now if ye want to see some real opulence, ye really need to visit Qatar. I was blown away by the splendid things slavery can buy out there. You can even see a football stadium (not a sport that interests me - I always preferred horse racing and fox hunting). I'm sorry, but Bristol's Georgian House simply cannot compare to Middle Eastern nations.

It's a good-sized historic place, with nice helpful staff. I liked the efforts to highlight the slaves working on the plantations, it's very thoughtful. I wish I could have gotten a closer look at some of the parts of the rooms like the bookshelves but I understand the barriers are necessary for preservation. I really liked the laundry/second kitchen and the breakfast room. Entry is free, you have the option to donate.

Interesting time period place lots of interesting information and a chap taking people around explaining everything this is also free to enter great for a wet day

Nice to see how the Georgians lived. Well set out house with most of rooms accessable. Really loved the cellar and kitchens. Nice to see some Royal Crown Derby pottery around the house (factory 3 miles from where I live) There is also some information on the top floor regarding the familys dealings in the slave trade. Free entry, donations welcome.

Great house museum decorated well in keeping with the Georgian time period- such as this amazing chandelier. Staff were quick to welcome me and offer a tour guide sheet, I also liked how each room had an extra sheet of information for those who like the extra history/detail. It's surprising how big the house is and well worth a visit, especially as it's free!

Staff is absolutely lovely and knowledgeable.
Very great experience and fun things to do (Easter activities, you can try different period costumes, play a clavichord, etc). We learned so many things!

Stumbled across this place and really enjoyed looking around. Interesting place and worth a visit.

The place itself has a wide variety of information about the house itself during the time of the Georgian era. It is amazing to see how they have laid out the entire 3 story building like a georgian house as it was back in the day. As the museum is over 3 stories there is a variety of rooms such as a kitchen a study bedroom and even swimming pool/large bath. The staff who work there have a a great knowledge of the era and are very polite and well spoken. When visiting there was staff members on each floor who were called Ryan , Caitlin and Rachel who were very helpful throughout the visit.
I would say this is here isn't just for adults it is also very interesting for people of all ages and it's nice to see see an age range of people wanting to learn about this era. The museum is free entry but they do rely on charitable donations for the upkeep of the house so so it's worth a visit and a donation. Even though there Air Museum shop is small they do have a great deal of merchandise that is very interesting and at a fair price. I would highly recommend this museum to anyone who is visiting Bristol. Bear in mind that this museum is open Saturday to Tuesday 11am - 4 p.m. another nice touch is that the staff sometimes dress up in outfits of the Georgian era to give your experience a more lifelike feel.

Very moving experience.
Great to see how the Georgian gentry lived, but shocking to fully appreciate it was built on the backs (literally) of fellow human beings.
Definitely worth a visit but only 4 stars as no access to top floor where servants lived. Would have been useful to see the contrast between upstairs downstairs living

Free to visit, the furniture and rooms are amazing and really well preserved. Staff is friendly and we'll informed, I loved to walk up and down the stairs.
Don't forget to check the timetable, this attraction closed very early in the afternoon.

An interesting experience walking through this house.

Lovely museum, unfortunately most of the rooms were closed. Could not get down stairs to have a look at the servant quarters. Slightly uncomfortable with Yoko Ono little exhibition (nudity scene etc). Interesting information about life of the slaves in the sugar plantation.

A fantastic, if somewhat remote, museum that offers an interesting insight to Georgian-era life in the city. The house is well maintained and full of varied exhibits relating to the Georgian family who once owned the property and their exploits in the slave-trading industry. It is worth noting that due to the design of the building there is no disabled access, and many steep staircases.

Free to enter no ticket required.

Visited this place a couple of months back and loved it. The house is laid out very well and there are a few staff members dotted around helping with any questions and information. Worth a visit if you are in Bristol. It's definitely a one off place though. Probably wouldn't go back again

Beautiful house and the fact that it is free is amazing. Staff knew what they were talking about and helped us when we wanted to see a few extra things. We recently bought a Georgian house and needed ideas. This ticked alot of boxes for us. Outside on road parking was limited but you need lots of change for the meter.
D. F.
Wow! A free museum that effect Ely tells the story of one level of georgian Bristol. Knowledgeable staff on hand to add to the experience. However no cafe nor public lavatories on site, but just over the road there are good ones at St George's cafe. Cafe looks OK too.
V. S.
A museum well worth a visit. Staff is very helpful and capable of answering all sorts of questions about the house and it’s former inhabitants in a casual and friendly way. I was quite impressed by the extra info they provided and had a great time there.

Historically fascinating and very interesting

Nice bar area, gorgeous building. Was there to see a choir performance and the acoustics were EVERYTHING! Have been multiple times and will go again

This was a sobering experience to see how wealth from slavery was justified with the use of religion. Despite it's sickening history, the preservation of such a place is essential to ensure such vile inhuman behaviour isn't forgotten. The house is well decorated and to a good level of accuracy for the period. It is also very close to Cabot tower if your ticker can stand it!
E. K.
Great 30-40 minutes walk to see how prosperous merchant lived in 18th century. Also interesting exhibition on slavery. Check the hours and note that not open in winter.

Very nice place but it not appreciated as there was an exhibition that did not have anything to do with the era. Staff was amazing and very knowledgeable.

Important period house representing a key moment in Bristol's history. The Georgian House was lived in and owned by a sugar plantation owner John Pinney and his family. With land and business interests in Nevis Island in the Caribbean, the owner and family are closely linked to the transatlantic slave trade. One of the enslaved then liberated Africans, a man called Pero returned to Bristol from Nevis to work as a servant to the family. He is memorialised elsewhere in Bristol with Pero's Bridge on the docks. The house is now a museum open Sat - Tues 11am - 4pm. Donations welcomed.

I surprisingly enjoyed walking around the house seeing how rich people lived 300 years ago. The staff were very knowledgeable and it's the kind of place to visit on the way to The Bristol Museum.

Another really interesting museum in Bristol. Really enjoyed my visit experiencing life in a Georgian manor. Don't miss it.

The staff is nice and there are not a lot of people visiting. It's bigger than you'd thought and the staff is willing to answer any questions and tell stories (or just leave you alone if you want to)

Interesting museum of a period house in the centre of Bristol, loads of interesting information about how the family and servants lived. Also covers the slave tradeing that was the source of the family's wealth.
