Reviews of Flatford: Bridge Cottage
A National Trust property not far from Ipswich. The Cafe features a good kitchen and there is also a NT shop for your stamp!
The heritage centre was closed when I visited on New years day (understandably so) but a beautiful place to step back in time.

So very beautifull. Constables paintings came to life in this wonderfull place
Beautiful atmosphere and lovely view of the River Stour. Terrible tuna sandwich, decent cheese and chutney sandwich.

Picturesque and peaceful NT location. Not as many buildings to look around as one might hope.
Such a lovely place. Kids can walk along the water edge. See the ducks and swans. There's a flower garden to explore and learn about different types of birds and wildlife. There's bathrooms on site a cafe to get snacks and drinks from.

Nice place good food and drinks with great views
The restaurant is a must to visit. All food is good but this is really good. ☺
Quite a hike to reach the spot where Constable painted The Haywain, especially if you go via the route outlined in our guide book (101 Walks in Britain to Do Before You Die). It nearly killed us!
Great place for food after a walk or a paddle.
Beautiful place to walk, paint, photograph or row a boat
Beautiful place. Would defo go there again.

Great place to visit
Lovely place to visit. Lots of history, an exhibition to cover who John Constable was and what he painted and then plenty of walks to head around and look at the area.
Good tea rooms with a selection of cakes and drinks. There is also a kiosk at busy days to buy take away stuff from and have a picnic. They do special events for kids at Easter and Halloween as well as during the summer holidays. There is standard parking (was 5 GBP a day) or free for National Trust members.
You can't beat walking past Flatford Mill and coming face to face with a scene from a painting.
Gorgeous place to visit, lots of facilities
Delicious cakes and coffee in a beautiful setting.

Amazing place great for all to visit
Stunning place, lovely walks
Lovely cafe with home made food
Lovely few hours at Flatford definitely worth the 1.4 mile walk from Manningtree. Looks the same as when Constable lived there.
Simple food but decently priced and friendly

Wonderful.
Beautiful!
Delightful.
Lovely!!!!
Delightful setting
Lovely place in a beautiful landscape. Glad we went there.
Iconic location
Back in time
Magnificent place. Quiet place, the river next to it, all very idyllic. It's nice to be in places like this. The food is all delicious and has average prices for the area. If you pass through here, make a stop for a drink in the meadow. The site offers two menus, one for the meadow and another for its facilities, either one is great.
The English landscape painter Constable found inspiration here. The National Trust now manages it and also uses it for nature and environmental education.
Very picturesque place. Scenic, suitable for a boat trip or lovely walk to Dedham.
Like immersing yourself in a Constable painting, beautiful English landscape with nice paths to explore it
Beautiful landscape with picturesque houses
Called by in passing. It had been raining heavily recently so the paths were rather muddy. Pretty place though. Nat Trust car park fee £4. Nearly toilets.
Good coffee, and a wide selection of cakes. Large indoor seating area and seating outside.
Life of John Constable - artists - long walks - nature trails -
The queue for food etc was utterly ridiculous. But the rest of the place was nice.
Quintessential English countryside. A beautiful setting by the river. I can see why Constable was so inispired to paint here. Perfect for a light bite to eat or picnic along the riverbank and walk with the dogs. Lots of kayaks in the water and boats for hire. Lots of spaces to park.
Quintessentially English, picture postcard perfect. Highly recommended. Cream Tea's are must have.
Great place to walk your dogs and meet other outdoor and cultural enthusiasts
A beautiful place with beautiful walks as long as it is a beautiful day
We do love this place can spend the day here easy .
A lovely place, well preserved by the national trust.
Beautiful place . Stand where Constable stood . Lovely boat trip , nice tea house
Adorable cottage, I am very happy I visited this place.
Stunning walks in picturesque Constable country
Lovely and peaceful. Nice to stroll around the grounds as if going back into time. The granary should be turned into a small theatre to recreate constables life. Fantastic for children. Very interesting place.
Fantastic place to enjoy nature! Beautiful to visit in springtime especially on season when the trees are in blossom, so as the Daffodils. It feels even more relaxing paddling through the River Stour at a slow speed.
Lovely place for a walk, around some beautiful old cottages.
Small but Interesting exhibition about Constable, and his love of Flatford.
The rainy day hampered our visit but we could occupy ourselves in the small gallery, shop and cafeteria. Particularly enjoyed the savoury scone. Will go back to take the boat trip. Wondering if they offer art days for those interested in landscape painting?
Well it's a nice country side, National trust site. Can't say too much about it as I was in a hurry for getting to Sutton Hoo but I was a bit disappointed we couldn't actually see the Mill. But you can have wonderful walks around.
We spent an interesting visit to Flatford Mill and the immediate surrounding area which inspired much of the English painter, John Constable's, notable works. This area of natural beauty is well maintained by the National Trust providing a pleasant atmosphere in which to view copies of his most famous paintings plus well documented history of his association with these well preserved buildings. The teashop offers a good selection of light lunches which can be enjoyed by the river Stour. A truly relaxing visit aided by the warm sunshine.
Stunning scenery. Great facilities. Perfect day out for all. Highly recommended. Beware of parking and plan ahead as much as possible. Narrow roads on the approach make traffic a nightmare
A wonderful place to visit. Plenty of surrounding countryside walks. Pleasant boat rides on the river. The cottage is quaint and enlightening not just for those who appreciate Constable's art.
Absolutely lovely, even on an overcast day. Lots to see and do, with terrific dog walks and wonderful views. Excellent café and beautiful surrounding villages with amazing houses. Well worth a visit.
The cafe fits in so well to its beautiful surroundings, hats off to the designer! Airy and pleasant inside. Not all crammed in either, fab food and drinks to boot!
We walked from Manning Tree Station to Flatford and back (a National Trust walk). Lovely walk and not too long, 2 miles each way.
We learned more about John Constable (an English painter) His most famous painting is 'The Hay Wain' and the spot where he painted this in 1821 is at Flatford and we stood there! There is a tea room serving good cakes and scones. It's probably very busy during Summer. You can also visit Bridge Cottage where you can go inside and read/see how people lived in the old days in 1800's. They also have a small museum on John Constable which is worthwhile. Recommended on a good weathered day.
A quick visit there could be a nice complement of your walk - it's about half way between Dedham and Manningtree. Maybe worthy to have a cup of tea among a very English countryside, sometimes even cattle grazing near, at other times the Stour River overflows picturesque.
Lovely, picturesque part of the world. Lovely for walks between Flatford and Dedham. There’s a fair amount of parking but perhaps not enough for the busiest of days. Flatford Mills itself is well known for a few vantage points painted by Constance including the Haywain.
Renowned for Constables paintings, fabulous views and history. The guides are very knowledgeable in the historical information. The cafe is brilliantly sited on the side of the river. Have a look at the dry dock along side the cafe.
Nice and relaxing, there is a coffee shop. Nice coffee nice environment
The subject of Constables famous painting. Disappointed that apart from the visitor center, there was little else to see or visit.
Surrounding Tudor buildings almost improved the visitor experience, until I noticed the 'Private Property' signs prominently displayed.
The countryside view so highly regarded wasn't so special, remembering of course the human race along with nature have progressed. Trees overgrown, rivers strangled, vehicles have taken to roads...
Wouldn't recommend this as a destination visit.
Historic location where the famous painting "The Haywain" was painted by John Constable. The area has been preserved much like it was in ths original painting. A great day out both for art lovers and people who love the British countryside.
Iconic Suffolk countryside, lovely walks around East Bergholt and Dedham. The starting and finishing point for our walk was the National Trust visitor centre. Enjoyed fabulous home made cakes and a cuppa after walk with our children. Highly recommended and we will visit again in the near future.
Stopped off here on the way home from Colchester, nice place to look around and great area for a walk. Worth a visit. Cafe was extremely busy so didn't get to try the food!
Great for walks but a bit muddy.
Historic area, anyone who has seen John Constable's paintings will recognise the area. Always peaceful, plenty of good walks alongside the River Stour. As usual with the National Trust, good food in the cafe.
Flatford Bridge Cottage is part of the the site of Flatford Mill Mill which is run and maintained by The National Trust.
The whole place is dripping with the history of John Constable, Britians greatest landscape artist.
It is situated on the River Stour and has some of the most picturesque views the country of Suffolk can offer.
There is a very nice tea room on the site. Entrance is free but it does cost £5 to park.
There is disabled parking and most of the site is wheelchair accessible.
Well worth a visit.🙂
Lovely place kids love it jumping off bridge into water great little cafe there too
Totally lovely place. Constable's landscapes can still be seen and the buildings are simply lovely. Nice tearoom too...
Wonderful place for the elderly to young kids. Absolutley gorgeous location where the painter Constable took inspiration and painted the Haywain. Lesiurley boat ride with informative guide (£5 per adult) or for the braver you can high row boats. Canel and lock. Very informative and unusual cottage with history of the families that have lived there. Decently priced cafe alongside the canel very nice food. Activities laid on for the kids. Will go again!
Lovely old cottage in the middle of the Dedham Vale, featuring beautiful countryside. Located next to Flatford Mill on the River Stour, site of many of famous Georgian landscape artist John Constable's paintings. Great area for walks and picnics
Lovely setting. Beautiful walks along the river. Cafe onsite serving cream teas and light lunches. Can hire row boats too!
Such a lovely place. Kids can walk along the water edge. See the ducks and swans. There's a flower garden to explore and learn about different types of birds and wildlife. There's bathrooms on site a cafe to get snacks and drinks from.
Good atmosphere. Staff were very informative. Spinning demonstrations were great. The witches trail was great for kids.
A good afternoon out.
Beautiful place, even in the winter
Best tea room. Freshly baked scones daily. Homemade cakes and lunches. Fresh ground coffee and good range of speciality teas. Friendly welcoming staff.
Stunning. Amazing walk from Dedham
Loved it plenty to see. Lovely walk or electric boat trip.
Coffee shop is nice although a little expensive.
So lovely here, gets busy though so come prepared with at least a drink you can carry, ideal picnic place as well.
Enjoyed our lunch and the staff were very helpful in heating up some baby food goes us. Also enjoyed the bumble bee trail.
Great for a visit on a Sunday afternoon. We walked to Dedham. There are no boats to hire from the Mill in the 2019 season but you can walk like we did to Dedham and hire from there. It's about a 1.5 mile walk there. Watch out for the cow pats!
My wife and I are members of the national Trust and visit flatwork often though the year it's a great place go and just chill out you can also get very good food & drink in the n.t cafe
Well worth a visit.
The Car Park gets very full, it is a beautiful place to visit. The Flatford restaurant is very good, the food is very good. A lovely place for all the family.
If you love Constable then this is the place. National Trust cafe on site. Sit right on the river outside. Lovely cream tea.
Lovely piece of Constable history...
Never tire of going here, great photo opportunity and a lovely Tea Shop.
Very peaceful and beautifully maintained. Perfect place to escape for a few hours, walk and enjoy afternoon tea.
Whether you want a delightful place to walk your dog, have a picnic or immerse yourself in John Constable, Flatford is the place to go.
Nice wildlife but not much buzz about it
Absolutely beautiful, had a fabulous day, took the boat down the river, walked amongst the cow, and explored constable country x
Pay to enter by per car per coach etc not per person. At present £5 for a car how ever many are in the car however NT members park free .Lovely place for an afternoon .Tea room a touch pricy but it's national trust run. Small constable exhibit Access to ground floor of cottage.Wildlife garden and walking trails.
Beautiful. Get lucky with the weather and you could spend peaceful hours enjoying the idilic scenery immortalised by Constable.
Pleasant place to visit on a summers day if you are at a loose end. Best to go in the week when there are fewer people around.
Quaint little area by the Old Mill with several walks alongside the River Stour. Lovely tea room and gift shop.
Beautiful walks and views of countryside, just be aware of the cow pats 🤣
Pretty but lacked items of interest just a shell of a house. Also field and path walks could benefit from benches along the way to take in the place
A very nice country area full of great views and nice people. It is a magnificent place to visit on a day out.
Felt like stepping back in time. We will visit again. Lovely coffee and cake in cafe
This place had so much potential and the food quality is great but just not enough choice of dishes. Chaos reigns and queueing just takes too long.
Great place beautiful surroundings. Great coffee shop and different and variety of activities possible.
Flatford is a really interesting and naturally beautiful place to visit for all whether or not you have an interest in john constable's paintings or not
wonderful historic views great walk on a sunny day cafe very slow when busy try hall farm just 10 mins down the road and well worth the trip a very picturesque working farm with a great restaurant
Flatford is National Trust and is a beautiful landscapes in Constable Country and they have a cafe for a cup of tea and a piece of cake
Lovery place, great for walks
What a stunning part of the world. Plenty of walks and open space.
Really lovely place to visit - Saturday is much quieter than Sunday so I strongly recommend that day
A tranquil spot with a excellent National trust tea room, ideal for walks and seeing Constable county
Wonderful place with nice staff and good coffee. Interesting little museum.
Beautiful place, staff were a little short with my granny when she was slow to make an order. There was no one else waiting.
Fantastic place to visit
Lovely historic place ... great for a weekend walk and a breath of fresh air
A beautiful and relaxing place to visit, each season of the year has something to delight in, never fails to deliver
A fantastic place for the whole family including the dog . Some lovely walks or a nice cuppa with a cake . I had shelagh’s special date and apple slice .
