Reviews of Hollytrees Museum

Really nice family friendly free museum. Lots of top quality items from the past to marvel at. Many of them are domestic appliances, but there are toys. The house was once a grand house owned by the MP for Colchester , Charles Grey (not the Prime Minister) in the 1700's. There is information about demostic Servants and the History of the House. Very interesting 👌

Hollytrees Museum is a small lovely museum located in Colchester and situated within Castle Park, off Colchester High Street. The museum is a beautiful Georgian townhouse and surrounded by beautiful gardens.
It is worth a quick visit if you happen to be in Colchester town and even strolling around the gardens can be very relaxing.

This is a really great museum set in a lovely Georgian House at the entry to Colchester Castle Gardens. Some beautiful paintings, clocks, kitchenware, and toys. Plenty to see for all the family and crammed with information. Small shop to buy keepsakes and books at the information centre within. Sadly there is no booklet to cover all what can be seen but the museum entry is free, donations are welcome. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and strongly recommend it as part of your Colchester discovery.

Lovely little free museum, very close to Colchester castle. The tourist information centre is also based here. Well worth spending an hour or so here. Loved the display of vintage children's toys and the domestic equipment. The clock display was enlightening too.

This is a lovely place, free of charge. You can get to see some amazing flowers.if you walk further down you will see the play area for kids. The play area is suitable for kids who are between 2-9 yrs old.

A very enjoyable experience with lovely staff who were very friendly. Three floors of fantastic old clocks, toys, household items accompanied with photos and write ups which really tell the story about the house. Spent a very good hour here with the kids.

An absolute gem of a museum that really complements the Castle next door and the Natural History Museum over the road. A fascinating look at the history of life and industry in Colchester - and the building itself - with artifacts ranging from teaspoons and boots to kitchen appliances and toys. It's certainly worth an hour of your time, especially for anyone living in the borough; the room about the city's manufacturing history is expansive, and worth a visit alone.

Great little museum, interactive for the children to enjoy different areas and fabulous considering its free entry. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The staff are friendly and helpful too

A small but very lovely museum house. It is located in a lovely park, right next to Colchester Castle.

Strongly recommended!. Free entry museum, very interesting. Lovely, a piece of Colchester's history. It's at the Castle's gardens, such beautiful place.

Only small but on three levels charting life and the the inventions that made life easier from old vacuums and washing machines to 50's/70's children's popular toys. Lovely memories of my childhood and more innocent times.
Yes worth a visit.

An interesting museum, showing the history of the town of Colchester, and it is free. Well worth a visit when in Colchester, the bonus is that it is in Castle Park and adjacent to the castle, so no real excuse for not visiting. Once inside you will find pleasant and helpful staff.

Good family friendly museum. Couldn't believe that we spent a hour in there! Toilets are located conveniently around the museum. Not sure if there is full disabled access, but I did spot a lift when I was upstairs.
J. Q.
Very nice little museum. Enjoyed the gallery of grandfather clocks most. Be sure to donate!
Y. S.
Very well presented and absorbing exhibits. Totally nostalgic. Completely free entry.
P. B.
Nice little museum in a beautiful Georgian town house, once belonging to the Gray's family. The Wetzlar Garden next to it contains several interesting tomb stones, many dating to the 1600's, originally from Great Tey church west of Colchester.
C. G.
Helpful staff. We only really required the use of the toilets but I would consider visiting properly another day. Lots of relics.
M. M.
A small museum but very interesting. You can find a bit of everything but it was well explained and well organised. Also it’s free so if you have some time I recommend you to take a look inside.
P. C.
Good look round free admission worth a visit

Worth a visit. Free entry and some interesting artifacts. Lovely setting but my son wasn't very engaged.

It shows you how life was back then, typical style of house museum really over a couple of floors in this small mansion. Nice gardens just a shame you cant go all the way to the bedrooms to see how they lived there but all in all ok. 7/10
K. H.
Lovely museum, very interesting. Highly recommend 10/10

Lovely museum.. but! Could not see most of the exhibits as there was a distinct lack of lighting... not sure if cutting back on lecky or bulb failures.. no idea.. terrible.. honestly..
H. J.
Good for people who likes antiques.
B. H.
Very nice guided tour of the ancient history and monuments of Colchester. I read some of the basic history before my trip but it was not easy to follow the drama. With an informed and personally enthusiastic storyteller, the tour creates a more substantial experience of times past.

For a museum that costs nothing to enter, Hollytrees is great! There's a lot in there for all ages to enjoy, in particular some great interactive areas to keep children entertained.
Has a nice little gift store at the entrance/exit.
Well worth a visit whilst you're in the Castle grounds.

Lovely.lovely museum but last visit spoilt by horrendous behaviour from school children from Ipswich with a teacher who lacked control...it won't stop us visiting however I will check if school visits on!
J. B.
Staff very helpful, lovely setting
C. N.
Very interesting. Thank you
S. W.
We loved it! We took an 8 and a 6 year old plus a 15month old in a buggy. A baby changing facility would have been helpful as the toilet floor was very small! We managed though.

I love this museum so much. The people who work here are so friendly and approachable. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask a member of staff. I spoke with a man who was either a volunteer there or someone who worked there. He new so much about the history of the museum. He showed me a dollhouse in one of the rooms and it was actually a replica of what the museum looked like when it was a house. He explained what every room in the house was. I sat down and listened to everything that he said.
The museum has stairs and also a lift. There are also toilets and a gift shop. The museum is wheelchair accessible via a ramp.
F. E.
Serene environment and lists of history to learn.
C. P.
Great little Museum. Especially if you are into grandfather clocks. Couldn't escape noticing the incorporation of a deliberately phallic look to one of them, which uses modern clear Perspex/plasic to it - a design being well ahead of its time - no pun intended. Also, the very knowing glint in the eye and roguish smile in the old photo of the gentleman who designed the timepiece, was very telling... This esoteric detail would be unnoticed by most, but is worth a visit by an adult to see this particular exhibit, and was my favourite curated item to be honest hehehe.
This FREE museum is a good component to the town's vast heritage and I would say it's well worth throwing a few quid in the donation bucket on the way out. Bravo Colchester Town Council.

R. C.
Very interesting museum made me very welcome too

Nice little place with quite a few interesting bits to look at in the museum and it's in the grounds of Colchester castle so the ground are lovely to walk around. Childrens play area and food places inside the ground
J. L.
Some interesting exhibits, bit it would be lovely to see the whole house restored to Georgian or Victorian era, including kitchen and servants areas. I think people would pay to look around then

England’s oldest recorded town is also its oldest Roman city. With a history dating back almost 2000 years, it’s a wonder that more people don’t visit this north Essex town, an hour from London by train. Visit the Norman castle, built on Roman foundations, and the ruined St Botolph’s priory, founded about 1100AD. The excellent Hollytrees Museum, adjacent to leafy Castle Park, has interesting displays about the city and its past residents, including an extensive collection of antique clocks. When you’re ready to rest your legs, the town has plenty of cafés from which to choose, including the characterful Tymperleys, housed in a Tudor mansion.

I loved this museum...I'm 62 and this had so much equipment, toys and school stuff from my youth.I also enjoyed looking at the portraits, especially the sour faced woman from 17oo's who had 15 children,125 grandchildren,300+ greatgrandchildren and so on...Sunday dinner at hers must have been a riot!My grandchildren enjoyed the exhibits too and the little gift shop. The museum is free and well worth a visit.
