Reviews of Coventry Cathedral
The ruined cathedral is a beautiful historical building, the place has quite an atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit, I would revisit without a doubt. There is opportunity to climb the spire/tower, unfortunately when we visited it was closed. So another reason to make a return visit.
More information boards would be nice is my only criticism.
Love it here as it's my family history the burned cross. Always love going to see it and the place is so peacefull . Am glad it's free entry now as when I.took my son to see his great great grandads cross we was charged. But still leave a donation and keep it running . Such a quality piece of history I hope will stand for many many years to come. And next time I'm in the country I'll be back again. Great job and qudos to all who maintain it.
A wonderful and historical experience and all free 🤩
Sad history of a wonderful cathedral and historic site. The fatal scar of war are visible on every corner of cathedral area.
A beautiful building, a fine example of modern expressive architecture, but it is showing its age. The lighting installed in the 1960's does nothing to really reveal its greatness. It could easily be improved to show the beauty of the slender columns resting on those steel pins supporting the vaulting in the roof. The only lights are hideous industrial units in the roof which at ground level provide little real illumination. I would quickly add done properly it would not detract from the amazing stained glass. I felt I should be impressed, and in a way was.
Such an iconic place in the city, great place to visit. Lovely staff and very helpful. Definitely worth visiting.
Ruined building is very moving. New cathedral is sensational. Great when sun shines through stained glass.
Very picturesque cathedral and lovely to look at. The graduation ceremony was great and the perfect venue for it. I’m not religious at all but I can definitely see why it’s such a famous place of worship.
Beautiful, plenty to see there. Lots of information given, the staff are great. I could have spent all day there.
This is such a beautiful place with a lot of history. You have 3 churches, one is a ruin, museum and one is functioning. Beautiful medieval architecture.
What a fantastic experience it was to visit the cathedral today. It was so interesting to see the old and the new in harmony, to learn about the history of the bombed old cathedral and see the inside of such a modern work of art.
Parking was very easy for a disabled driver, with 6 disabled spaces very close by. Entry is free but please do leave a donation.... Oh and in terms of donation they also have a system to leave one by card.
Famous bombed cathedral was OK, just a shell, but how it sits next to and linked to the new cathedral was very clever. Not being a normal churchgoers, but I do appreciate a good bit of architecture and this is a great example of a new cathedral. A lovely space, lovely roof and ultra thin columns. Well worth a visit
Coventry Cathederal is the tale of two cathedrals, the old and the new. Rather than completely demolish the old cathedral after it was blitzed in WII, it was kept as a reminder of how important the city was.
At one stage, Coventry had 3 cathedrals. The city has always played an important part in the transport, trade and guilds of the uk.
Simply stunning, the message of love is strong
This is an amazing building which holds a lot of history. It was destroyed during a German air raid in WW2. The architecture is still very interesting and it's a nice place to have a walk around. Lots of local cafes close by for food and drink and easy to get to. Well worth a visit.
The inside of the cathedral was fantastic, like no other I have seen.
The stain glass window layout in particular was amazing.
The outside of the cathedral sadly had alot of construction going on, so the scaffolding cranes etc ruined the architectural views.
Went to hear Nitin Sawhney's Ghosts in the Ruins last night .. another message of love & friendship after the devastation of war. Beautiful voices ❤️.
Lovely new cathedral next to the Old bombed out cathedral. Beautiful windows and very much worth a visit
I was with a group which had arranged for guided tours for us but as I coudn.t hear a word they said I left the group and visited the museum and cafe. Excellent.
Being born in Coventry and not having visited the cathedral for at least 25 years it was a fabulous experience both for rediscovering the history of my city but reminiscing of my visits there as a school boy. staff were absolutely fabulous, helpful informative and knowledgeable. Would absolutely recommend it. Also the final resting place of the HMS Coventry bell and other artefacts salvaged from the wreck.
Free entry and level access. However some of the chapels are access by steps and the gallery in downstairs.
Great cathedral, lovely architecture and stained glass windows. Sculptures and mosaic floors.
Totally unique cathedral like nothing I’ve been to before.
Brilliant visit, amazing crafts within the building, beautiful coloured glass windows. Very helpful and friendly staff through out
Incredible! I visited once before in the 1970s but didn't appreciate it then. I am so glad I went back. The story of its creation, the magnificent architecture and those beautiful windows. It is modern yet timeless. A special mention for the wonderful volunteers who greet you and are happy to answer questions.
So, I was out exploring place that i can use to take engagement pictures for a client of mine and the place is just absolutely beautiful. You can take really nice pictures and the place serves as a really nice background.
I went for the ice skating in the ruins and had a fantastic time
New and old cathedrals side by side. Beautiful and thought provoking. The interior of the new Cathedral is stunning. Must see even for the non religious.
Truly beautiful. What a incredible building so beautifully designed. The Graham Sutherland tapestry is stunning. And the stained glass is beautiful when the sun shines through.
I went for a concert by Tangerine Dream and it was excellent. The setting and the acoustics made it a memorable experience.
A potent symbol of reconciliation in post-war Britain, Coventry’s cathedral is a striking modernist structure, rising adjacent to the ruined shell of the old one that was destroyed during the Coventry Blitz. The city suffered huge losses on 14 November 1940, when 1,200 people were killed and hundreds of its medieval buildings destroyed in a bombing raid. The words “Father Forgive” are etched above the altar of the ruined medieval church, which remains hallowed ground.
Very interesting place to visit! Has plenty of history! The platform above the bells is very good as well as the top of the spire!
What a beautiful and moving place of justice live and reconciliation
Brilliant place to visit. Has a very welcoming mission statement outside which welcomes every one regardless of colour ,race, sexual preferences ,age or religious beliefs. Despite been built in the early 1960s the Cathedral looks extremely modern with classic stained glass panelling and a rich blend of modern art and classic features. There is no entrance fee but you can contribute to the upkeep of the building as there are collection boxes shattered throughout the building. If you visit Coventry you must visit the Cathedral and the Cathedral ruins next to it. If you don't go it would be like going to Paris without visiting the Eiffell Tower.A must see.
What remains of the Coventry Cathedral- must have been truly impressive before it was partially destroyed in the war. If in the area in would suggest visiting St Mary’s Guildhall and the Holy Trinity Church which are both nearby
Nice and Calm city with beautiful landscape!
Ruins of an old cathedral located in the city centre. Nice background for a photo shoot. Surrounded by other old houses and cobblestone streets that throw you back in Lady Godiva’s time.
The Cathedral Church of Saint Michael, commonly known as Coventry Cathedral, is the seat of the Bishop of Coventry and the Diocese of Coventry within the Church of England. The cathedral is located in Coventry, West Midlands, England.
Amazing cathedral, unfortunately there is a restoration so it's closed for a few months.
Lovely cathedral very modern
Best of all free to look around.
Amazing, you can have a look on what's left from cathedral, right next to it you can find statue made out of knives collected from police station across UK, impressive.
Older building is still standing and was bombed during the war which looks amazing still and the newer building is astonishing highly recommend you to go and enjoy the history behind it
Beautiful cathedral. Great venue gor the concert we attended.
It is a fascinating place. A cathedral like no other, anywhere in the world. It is all modern design including the altar, the stained glass windows and the pulpit. All credit to the forward looking developers, way back in the 1950s to be bold and defy convention. Makes a change from the conventional cathedrals which seem to be copies of each other. This one stands out.
Such an interesting place, nice to see the old cathedral juxtapositioned with the stark outside of the new. But inside the new is a calm space beautifully lit by the stain glass windows. Nice to arrive with the organ being played as well. A Coventry must see, I think.
As part of a evening stroll through Coventry we decided to visit the cathedral both of our children were amused at the size of it as well as interested in why it didn’t have a roof, we did enjoy the walk around as well as seeing a fundraiser for abseiling down the side of the new cathedral, well worth a visit.
Nice part of covery bringing together old and new. The ruins directly opposite the new cathedral offers a nice juxtaposition. You're two minutes from anything the city centre has to offer and there are frequent outdoor events held here
Beautiful Church Loved Our Quick Visit.
I will be going back for a proper tour.
The cathedral, having been burnt down during the war was rebuilt in a 'modern' style that makes it, well modern and a bit weird. It is however an amazing space with great acoustics. We watched a candle light concert performed by the chamber orchestra London Concertante along with a few mince pies and glasses of mulled wine.
Amazing place to visit, even to just sit down and rewind 🙏🏽
I love to just sit on the benches in the ruins and reflect in it's peaceful environment. It's got a rich history and is a symbol of the city's resilience. Would really recommend a passer by to experience it.
fantastic history old and new together! Such a magical/spiritual place. We stopped for prayers as the place and ambience encourages it
Nice and big Cathedral in city center of Coventry. Nice work of arts inside.entrance is free
Bombed out cathedral really impressive - doesn't seem to close at certain time. On street parking nearby - not badly priced if only want short visit (pay ar meter by coins or website - charge extra for using card service). Newer cathedral very modern - we were able to join a service as arrived after 4 (no visitors after then unless attend service). Both well worth a visit
Spectacular place. A modern cathedral with stunning features. I attended a concert and it was memorable.
A beautiful cathedral with lots to offer, I'm very impressed by the amount of events they host and the fact they are so accessible to everyone.
Fantastic to visit after about 36 years. We had our graduation ceremony there. It still has the wow factor - the old cathedral joined to the new, and the amazing Graham Sutherland tapestry. Wonderful place ❤️
The ruins of the old cathedral are stark reminders of the war and well worth a visit. And the new cathedral is stunning, with its modern stained glass widows and decor.
AUG 2023
Actually went in to the New Cathedral
For a Art exhibition.
1st time entering ... amazing building and space . !!!
KNIFE STATUE Great piece of art well worth visiting . You will need to walk 10/15 mins as no local parking . However worth doing plus worth exploring around the area.
I think the old cathedral looks better than the new one it has more character personally I think the new one is ugly it's just a lump of concrete.
The old remains of the bombed cathedral certainly pull on your heartstrings and make you sit back and think how dreadful this act was at the time.
Next to the ruins is a beautiful and awesome replacement cathedral and both are must visits if in the area.
Great experience!
Not normally a great fan of modern churches, but this blew me away. After wandering around the ruins of the old adjoining Cathedral for half an hour or so, descended the steps down to the front of the new one. Very hard to see through all the glass to the interior, so you're almost forced to enter. So glad we did though. Perfect mix of old and new, the most stunning example of the latter being the floor to ceiling stained glass window immediately to your right as you enter. Simply lovely. 👏💖
Great place to visit, very beautiful, modern addition to cathedral ruins.
Visited the catheral for light show "where light falls". It was alright. I'd say it was good enough considering it was FREE. It was 10 mins lomg and while the show went on, a background voice spoke about the history of Coventry and the cathedral.
The modern cathedral was constructed alongside the remains of the original. A respectful preservation of the historical significance of the second world war to Coventry and the surrounding area.
Amazing location packed with history and also great for gigs in the Ruins
Great cathedral. Very soothing atmosphere inside. Cool and calm place for peace of mind..
I prefer a more older style but this is still beautiful and would always visit here when in Coventry.
Wonderful memorial, and place of tranquility.
The Cathedral Church of Saint Michael, commonly known as Coventry Cathedral, is the seat of the Bishop of Coventry and the Diocese of Coventry within the Church of England. The cathedral is located in Coventry, West Midlands, England. The current bishop is Christopher Cocksworth and the current dean is John Witcombe.
The city has had three cathedrals. The first was St Mary's, a monastic building, of which only a few ruins remain. The second was St Michael's, a 14th-century Gothic church later designated as a cathedral, which remains a ruined shell after its bombing during the Second World War. The third is the new St Michael's Cathedral, built immediately adjacent after the destruction of the former.
What a magnificent building! It is impossible not to be moved by a visit to this cathedral. The story of its creation and the design of the various chapels and other features is a tremendous credit to all those involved over 60 years ago.
Uncertain about the modern aspects of this cathedral but worth a visit.
Fantastic free experience for all. You can really get a feel for what it was like in the old cathedral and with the new right next door it's an amazing place to pop in and Basque in the beauty of the building.
After looking at the remains of the old Coventry Cathedral, bombed by the Luftwaffe on the night of 14 November 1940, we sat quietly in the newer Cathedral, almost on the spot where I was in 1962 when the new Cathedral was consecrated and we said a prayer for everyone suffering in Ukraine.
Much more interesting than expected. The new cathedral is a spectacular space.
Most probably the modern design of a religious building ever produced, outstanding beautiful blend of modern art and stonework.
This is very nice place to visits.
Church been finished in 1394 but in 1940 was heavily damaged by German bombs.
So sad...
If you want to climb to the tower is £5 for adults.
simply the best cultural events, v2.0 given the original cathedral lies in ruins directly next door. a progressive church that offers amazing and well thought out architecture. regardless of your views on the subject, a worthy spot to see in Coventry
Great design and the cathedral ruins are eerie and surprisingly quite when standing inside the ruins.
Some stunning interior design, well worth a visit
A large and beautiful cathedral in the middle of Coventry. Entrance is free. Stained glass windows are really nice. Take a whole tour around and look at everything. It's worth it
Just LOVED this place!
The staff were friendly and helpful but the building. Wow!
Everywhere you looked there was amazing artistry and symbolism. We were there for hours, letting it all sink in.
Highlight of our trip for sure.
A historic and beautiful architecture. It is free to have a look inside. Sometimes, the cathedral used for a formal party.
Beautiful place of worship, the historical old ruins next to the modern replacement.
Great for pics!!
Just have a look at the pics
Went to a beautiful ordination service on Sunday. The choir sang some gorgeous hymns and choral pieces and the service was led by the Dean and other clergy. We were sat in small groups of 6, socially distanced and wearing masks. The Cathedral was majestic and welcoming.
Loved it and the getting people together on the wool basket ball making.
The new Coventry cathedral...didn’t go in...but looks extremely impressive.
Lovely to see how well preserved cathedral is.lots of history
Free to go in and walk around the ruined cathedral church of st. Michael.
John Brassington was an excellent tour guide around this amazing cathedral - full of fantastic facts. The stained windows are extraordinary: the best I've seen anywhere in the world.
Pretty to look at but on the whole it was quiet and not much signage, information etc. Nice area to walk about. We had the 'knife angel' statue there when I visited which was probably more interesting 🤔
Just gorgeous. Glad that I have been here for many years.
An amazing space, s very early welcome and plenty of opportunities for peace and reflection.
Beautiful definitely worth a visit. must visit ruins when you are there.
Old ruins moves your heart. Coventry is called City of Reconciliation. Though razed down to nothing during World war II, it picked up from its low point and now is a thriving city with a highly ranked Coventry University. International students flock the University to gain a graduation.
Very nice place to visit but if you wish to climb up the tower you should check the time for visiting.
Really nice place to visit even if it's just for a quick look around.
Amazing architecture but dreadful acoustics.
We came to a performance of Bach St Matthew Passion. I'm sure it was very good but we couldn't hear a thing. A complete mush of echoes meant we had to strain to hear the music. Very disappointing
Stunning, worshipful and spiritual artwork inundates this very holy place. I was mesmerised
I enjoyed my visit immensely and there was a lovely lady who gave me and others a free and informative guide of the cathedral, which encouraged me to purchase items from the "gift shop " and also donate to the cathedral. A truly beautiful and inspirational building .
Quick visit to the cathedral ruins. Couldn’t see modern part as graduations were ongoing
Old and new they're really good especially if you're into your history.
I went specially to see the Knife Angel sculpture which is a National Monument against Violence and Aggression. It is built of knives confiscated by police forces throughout whole UK.
It tours around the country. In May 2019 it is visiting Birmingham and you will find it erected at Victoria Square (B1 1BD).
Beautifull cathedral very modern
The skeleton of the original Coventry Cathedral is a powerful reminder of the trauma and damage that the city of Coventry went through over two nights back in 14th 15th November 1940
Beautiful cathedral and surroundings well worth a visit
Very impressing architecture ✅
Lovely cathedral 👍🏻
This place is stunning. Most of Coventry bombed but parts of the old cathedral survived. Fabulous place.
Beautiful cathedral in close proximity to the remains of the original cathedral. Coventry University Graduation ceremonies are very well organised and it was a pleasure to attend.
The juxtaposition of the old ruined cathedral building with the modern one is thought provoking and a solemn reminder of Coventry as the city of peace and reconciliation. Entry to the new building is by donation. The design is very modern, with unique stained glass and altar amongst other things.
First time actually going inside, it was free to go in, donations by card or cash are welcomed. The wooden chairs were actually really comfortable! The words written on the walls and floor was very interesting. 👍🏾 it is worth a visit.
Really a nice place to visit as a tourist.
I didn’t pay any entry fee, I was told I could go up, though I couldn’t because I went during winter.
I loved the Cathedral, it’s where the Bishop of Coventry stays as well.
Some areas were under construction as at the time I was there.
Great that this historic building is being used for these more intimate gigs.
Very interesting for a modern building
A place of peace and inspiration. Full of unparalleled works of art that celebrate the human spirit. Whatever your faith, this is Coventry's gift to the world.
Absolutely proud of my dad he has worked so hard well done
I'm an atheist but I find churches and cathedrals carry so much history. Fascinating history at this relatively new cathedral. Humans can still build architectural wonders when they try.
I have been to events in the old cathedral and the rebuilt one. They are both beautiful. But a visit should make you think: what on earth we did to each other as Europeans, and to the world.
Historic amd must to visit place. Been several times now.
Firstly, the reception staff are fantastic. Very warm and welcoming.
No admission fee, but your welcome to make a contribution if you want to, no pressure whatsoever.
At last I was able to light a candle and say a prayer in a church with peace and tranquillity at it's core.
Thank you.
A true national treasure. Whatever your faith,or even none, worth a visit.
A lovely cathedral both Old and New with plenty of character. Went today to celebrate Pru Poretta 40 years as Lady Godiva sharing the celebrations with Pru's friends.
I highly recommend visiting the cathedral. The story this building tells is mesmerizing. There are many plates that inform you about what happened due to WW2 and why the city of Coventry looks the way it is now.
Fascinating and interesting place to visit with lots of history and culture, recommend ed.
Amazing and humbling Cathedral. The cafe called Rising Cafe, From The Rubble. The toasted teacake and latte were bostinly tasty, and has memento's around the room.
Wasn't expecting such a lovely building. I normally don't like very modern churches made mainly from concrete. The tapestry is 23metres tall and 12 metres wide and weighs about a ton. The amazing thing is it is made in one piece.
Visit much enhanced by a minister whose enthusiasm and knowledge explained so much about the cathedral. Well worth a visit.
This much-hyped complex of historic buildings IS everything it's cracked up to be. I’m not religious, but the buildings inspire a sense of awe that must surely be next to godliness. The ancient, bombed-out ruins of the old cathedral are a poignant counterpoint to Basil Spence’s magnificent, modern construction. For us the windows were the most dazzling parts of the building. The screen that welcomes you into the new cathedral is set with engraved glass artworks, by John Hutton, depicting angels as you may never have seen them before. The stained glass windows in the baptistry and the nave are beautifully designed riots of colour that draw you in, towards the giant tapestry behind the altar. It’s like no other cathedral I’ve ever encountered and well worth a visit. If you get a chance to see it, there is also a great documentary on BBC Four showing how the cathedral was designed and built (available in 2021).
Modern Cathedral situated adjacent to the original one, which was destroyed during WW2.
Free entry, with two large visual display units, which explain more about the history of the building. There is a small museum area downstairs.
Very peaceful, a place to reflect and admire the art and engineering.
Great Jethro Tull gig in the Cathedral. Sound was well managed in a building which has a difficult acoustic.
Wonderful serine experience . Truly well worth a visit.
Really interesting tour around the destroyed remains of the cathedral and the new cathedral. Great cafe is the basement too - really quaint
G4 Christmas was amazing, but it was very hard to see properly, chairs would of been better staggered and tvs would of been better further back so people at the back could see them 😊
Looking very good with the lights in the evening especially while the Knife Angel is displayed.
The light show was excellent, our cathedral is a nice place to visit
Modern and old cathedral side by side. A must go to place for anyone with interest in art.
The ruins of the old cathedral are better preserved than I expected. The new cathedral has quite an impressive organ! It was great listening to a recital there!
Beautiful cathedral. Went to see the knife angel. Great visit well worth going. Would go back again. The old cathedral was welcoming
Both old and new cathedrals are well worth visiting
This is a unique cathedral as it was bombed by the germans in WW II. The roof is gone but the walls are still there!
Nice place to visit. Recommend a climb to the top of the spire for great views over the city.
It's an impressive building and lovely old buildings surrounding it
I loved that Coventry built their stunning new cathedral juxtaposed to the beautiful original cathedral. The combined experience is very special.
A good place to reflect and enjoy the history, Engineering and the space.
Truly a very impressive modern building. Beautiful stain glass windows and other features in minimalist interior.
Nice to visit the old cathedral
I'll preface this review by saying I'm not religious in any way -
This building is beautiful!
Alright, it's not exactly Cologne Cathedral but it was built to replace the bombed-out skeleton that still exists today, just opposite the entrance. Considering this, it's a sight to behold - it's so light and massive inside and the space seems as if it were built not by humans.
For a work of modern architecture, and compared to other modern cathedral attempts (such as Liverpool and Guildford), it's unique and spectacular and truly does its purpose justice.
Amazing place. Brilliant organ concerts each Monday lunchtime.
Very much enjoy having a peaceful sanctuary so close to the city centre.
Went to see G4 in cathedral, and looked at the ice rink in the ruins. Cathedral Old and New are impressive.
Very beautiful place, it also has an echo sound architecture, people from the top of the tower can be heard from the other side on the ground.
Wow just wow. Always makes me so happy that the UK is proud of there heritage and that they look after it.
Not sighed very well only especially for coaches could be better thats the trouble with council's they like the visitors but not the coaches can't cost that much for sign can it
At an event for the Art's & homelessness International group to raise awareness.
Visited the Cathedral during the Easter Service, a well-attended event. The music from the Choir and organ was superb.
The art exhibition showed a range of sculptures that you usually have to visit a museum to see.
Magnificent!
One of the great architectural buildings in Britain. If you're visiting Coventry visit the cathedral.
It was my first time being there for my graduation ceremony.
Tangerine Dream gig
Its really beatiful ive been here before and ive got to say its an amazing place with an ice skating ring
Went for an Aled Jones concert..fantastic acoustics
Beautiful cathedral with history. Also there are many nice restaurants and places nearby to hang out near cathedral.
What an excellent location steeped in splendid buildings and history.
Cannot comment on the religious services, as do not use them, but really love how much the place does for the community. There is forever something happening in the old cathedral ruins space from dining club to concerts. I love the monthly yoga class which is AMAZING in the great space, with heated floor, brilliant acoustics and the absolutely georgous engraved class window front.
A welcoming venue for a most enjoyable evening of music
Utterly beautiful place. Please visit.
Beautiful Cathedral, stained glass windows are awesome
A splendid looking cathedral inside and been before 3 times and the ruined cathedral worth seeing, would recommend to anyone.
Beautiful
Thank you coventry catherdral... with lots of love from the Benji and Alison.xxx choir. Xxx
Amazing Cathedral to visit , i enjoyed the tower climb, the bell ringing experience , overall a tranquil feel , great to see visitors from abroad...
Fantastic cathedral. When I first time came here, I love it. This cathedral is totally different than other cathedral. When you visit Coventry, you should come here.
Not much to see in the city but if u are there u have to go to the Cathedral
Went to watch my daughter and her school having a celebration here.
Just amazing, what a fantastic building
A stunning location where many functions are held.the angel statue is stunning to see. Made of knives from an amnesty
Absolutely stunning well worth a visit when in Coventry
Fantastic architecture, both uplifting and a bit sci-fi. Felt like I was in a Frank Herbert Dune location. The wall of stained glass as the sun comes through is simply awe inspiring. A definite must see.
The knife angel added that much more realism to an already heavy history of the area
Magnificent architecture, achieving its effect mostly by simplicity. You need to see a few big things, not dozens of small details - so you can spare time to see the ruins of the old cathedral as well. Absolutely worth the visit.
Old cathedral that was destroyed in the war is amazing. It has become a centre for reconciliation and is known all over the world. There is a sense of quietness there which seemed to affect everybody - old and young alike.
The new cathedral, built next door, is a remarkable feat of architectural design and well worth visiting too.
Amazing piece of architecture. Fabulous meld of violent destruction, forgiveness, compassion and resurrection - linking the particular with the universal, the moment with the eternal, the secular with the sacred ... Somehow intimate yet huge ... And absolutely beautiful. I've never visited such a fine and moving cathedral.
I was overwhelmed by the Cathedral. What a moving place of reconciliation and architecturally expressed most appropriately.
Visited easter day for the service. It was absolutely fantastic.
Serene and warm. Skating rink build in the old church.
Unfortunately the old cathedral ruins are closed more often than not recently, however it is still a beautiful location and the new cathedral is just as picturesque.
It's just a word of art.
Very peaceful and serene.
Excellent place to spend some time. So much to see and so much history. Drapers hall is due a grant from Price Charles, well worth a look.
A point of interest that makes me proud to be a Coventrian. Rich in history, this is a part of the city that I love and where there is always something happening, whether that be joining in on religious ceremonies or attending exhibitions within the ruins.
When you enter make sure you look backwards at the glass engravings covering the entrance. Superb
Great bit of history, just a shame it is not promoted very well - it's very hard to tell what (or when it is) open - the spire, or the underground part.
Great experience, We shall Never forget
witness of Coventrt Blitz, magnificent spot to stroll around
Beautiful building to walk around. With the many strained glass windows. I liked the fact that it was donations and not pay to get in. It is a place of worship.
Interesting remnants of the original cathedral, bombed during the war and allowed to stand in its shell next to it's modern replacement. The building serves as a constant reminder of the impact of the war, its understated and is a nice tranquil spot to sit down and think. Recommended
This is such an ancient unique place, in my opinion it should be part of uniesco world heritage site.
Sadly because Coventry is not very touristic area not many people get to see this monumental cathedral with all its glory on their visit to the UK
However if you are passing by the Midlands in your trip to the UK, definitely take opportunity to see Coventry cathedral and learn about its history dating back to 1300
Really great place
And the new Cathedral is fantastic
3 Cathedrals next to each other
It's "easy breezy" at the cathedral...beautiful, scenic, well maintained and wheelchair accessible (which is always important for my family). Its central location makes it a great spot for some down time during a day out and when activities are happening in the university's square it can makes for an even more memorable visit. Must see it Coventry.
A lovely area to amble around or sit with a coffee or sandwich.
Very emotional, when you think of ww2, the St Michael statue is very powerful.
There's a lovely little water spout area which the children love to play in...when it's a bit warmer🙂
Didn't think much of what I saw of the rest of Coventry but the area around the cathedral was very beautiful. The cathedral itself was a poignant reminder of the horror of war and the importance of peace and understanding. The small museum is well worth a visit for £1 and is manned by people with first hand experience of the war.
A wonderful experience with the majesty and beauty of the new cathedral contrasting with the stark reminder of the fragility of life that the old building reflects. Having read The Tidal zone by Sarah moss I had some inkling of the creation of the cathedral post war which added to the power. Certainly gave pause for reflection.
As moving a visit as the last time I was here 30 years ago. Spectacular.
Beautiful and tranquil place, modern but beautiful.
Amazing cathedral, beautiful buildings old and new. Very educational workaround of the history.
Wow, beautiful modern cathedral, well worth a visit. The tapestry and stained glass are magnificent, all very fresh looking and bright. It's just majestic - I would say it's a must see in Coventry if your visiting as it is a good experience. Amazing ancient reliefs and beautiful structure. If you are ever in Coventry you must visit the cathedral!
Fascinating to see the old and new Abbey next to each other
We had a nice time at the cathedral the staff was friendly the liked the banners of the people of Coventry and the liked the old and new Cathedral and it was good it was free to go in the Cathedral
Stunning building, well worth a visit
It is a lovely buiding, which grows on you everytime you visit
I have great experience to visit cathedral its an excellent sight of history
Although in places it feels a little like a building designed by a committee, the overall effect is excellent. It is so encouraging that the powers that be did not scrimp and save on both creativity and execution. There is tons of great artwork about both Jesus as well as reconciliation. And the place does not appearing to just be a trendy art gallery - from what I saw there appears to be genuine expressions of the Christian faith and community in place. Walking past last night I saw a vicar and a group of others meeting and talking in the associated St Clare's cafe.
A nice mixture of old and new here. The original cathedral was bombed during World War Two and a sympathetic new or replacement part has been added which was opened in 1962 taking 4 years to construct. Beautiful inside and out.
Beautiful church, wonderful people. The ruins and remembrances are also a sobering reminder of a difficult, chaotic period when so many people sacrificed to defeat tyranny.
Held a good series of talks - Genexis
Cool building too. Amazingly tall.
A remarkable place to visit as a bombed out she'll from WW2. Has a quiet peaceful almost tranquil feel. Worth a visit to just spend some time contemplating. Next door to the modern version.
Lovely event space uniquely leverages historic nave structures in a modern twist. I love that it seems to spill right into the WWII bombing ruins of the ancient cathedral. Coventry itself embraces all its past and defines itself as a peaceful forward looking city.
Worth the trip, free of charge. Welcome to donate.
The best thing about Coventry is its stunning cathedral designed by architect Sir Basil Spence. Beautiful stained glass by John Piper. It's free to enter and we had a lovely guide Ann who took us on a personal tour. Well worth the visit.
Interesting place being around worth to look around.
Brilliant to visit, this is us skating in the old cathedral ruins 😀
There for a Coventry University graduation and award ceremony. A great venue for a great occasion. A lovely modern take on a cathedral.
So much could be done here, so much more information could be told about the history, the materials things are made from. As much as I had a lovely visit I was disappointed, I was asking questions to myself and was left wondering about the history of the place.
We went to Coventry especially to visit here but ended up spending more time in a few shops in the town. Ok to pop in of you are in the area but wouldn't make a special trip to visit.
You do not need to be a church goer to appreciate this wonderful building or I should say two buildings. The original cathedral was badly damaged during the war so there is no roof but you can walk inside the walls. The new cathedral has a very impressive glass entrance. Its light and spacious inside with art on display. I have been several times most recently to a wine tasting and it made a great venue. There is a cafe downstairs. Free entry but donations welcome.
Very quite, very peaceful.
A lifetime waiting to visit, well worth the wait, lovely blend of old and modern. Easy parking and great shopping centre nearby.
Beautiful place to visit. Students and diversity all around.
Beautiful new cathedral, so lovely but sad to walk around the ruins of the old one. The views from the spire are breath taking, as is the climb up 181 steps. A must for tourists and locals alike to help to see the futility of war.
Lovely cathedrals. You can still see some of the beauty of the bombed out one and the new modern one is spectacular.
It is a complete contrast to the city centre but though the new cathedral is impressive The old cathedral as such peaceful vibes my sister and I sat in silence just soaking up the atmosphere.. The rising cafe is also a favourite with us ..
Was baptized here in 1963 and regular visitor. Much nicer now there isn't a charge to go in!
Beautiful, lovely to see the old and new side by side. Stained glass windows in the new cathedral are definitely worth a visit. Staff were great too
Beautiful church and lovely to explore And walk around the center. It’s full of history and worth the visit inside to look at the great architecture.
A beautiful blend of the old and the new, a quite spiritual and ethereal experience.
Lovely place to visit.
Very big cathedral
Visited the Cathedral on 18th November 2021 for my Sons Graduation Service. Very impressive inside and a very well organised event.
Beautiful....saw the Epstien pieces
Here for a concert rather than a service but a spectacular place. I well remember the reopening but had never been here before. Destroyed in WWII it is a poignant reminder that we learned nothing from the fact that wars destroy and we never learn, never learn.
We went to the Snowman showing with a live band, fantastic event and happy to support the Cathedral
If your in the area and have got about half an hour or so free, it’s well worth a visit
Amazing, must seen place!!! All the beautiful modern art can't be described with words!
The old monument is all wrecked, but still looks beautiful n you can imagine how beautiful it would had been. On the other side, the new cathedral is beautiful a must visit place
Stunning mid-20th C architecture and design. Stained glass alone worth a visit but location is a gem. Getting to middle of Coventry to park is a challenge!
Excellent location to see Tangerine Dream. The acoustics, light show and visual effects were superb. The Cathedral has such a wonderful setting and atmospheric feel. This made for a truly special evening.
I wanted visit huge, old church. It appeared that it is is not possible, because it was destroyed by Germans and not rebuilded as a war reminder... but there is a very interesting concept behind new one, and lady who is a keeper of place talk about it in a very interesting way. There is also nice acoustics and massive pipes, definitely I want to come here again and hear them playing a music.
A stunning testament in stone, metal and glass.
Fabulous for prayer and contemplation as well as a great venue for other events, including art exhibitions, musical evenings and broadcasting live as in the recent Radio 4 Any Questions.
The building is unique and very much to the point of view of complex building
We had a warm welcome and were excited to see what a great cultural program they offer. The ruins next to it add a new dimension to the building and it's lovely to see that contrast.
Coventry cathedral is a historic place where I have some personal history at. Way back in the day I helped broker a reconciliatory negotiating between enemy sides in Bosnia to agree rebuilding of the super iconic UNESCO protected cultural heritage building of Ferhadija Mosque in Banjaluka, which was destroyed during the war by Serbs for no apparent reason other than they wished to destroy the Islamic history of that region. The cathedral is a magnificent, peaceful and somewhat eery place with lots of artistic room for finding peace at. It was bombed during second world war and the ruins are still there to observe and feel as a reminder to how much we need peace on Earth.
A great monument of Faith and Freed.
Amazing interior and beautiful community.
During Christmas times it’s amazing inside, they also have plenty of events.
An incredible place to rest, pray and think about your dear ones.
What a superb attraction. The church is a stunning building and this history behind it runs deep. So much to explore and the staff were friendly and helpful.
The cathedral was nice, I'd recommend visiting it if you're already in the city but don't dedicate an entire trip to Coventry for it, there's not much info or guides on the history of the place but it is really pretty
Has one of the best organs I have ever seem, it sounds heavenly. There are little Easter eggs all around like the coins on the floor that were donated by local kids
Wow wow wow this building is amazing. I was astounded by how amazing this is for a modern building. The guides and volunteers were unbelievable with their knowledge. I really loved this, a must see.
Attended a concert by A Ukrainian male voice choir, and a brilliant violinist. Lovely concert in beautiful surroundings. 🙏👍
Fantastic, wonderful place. Beautiful remains of the old world. You can sit here and admire the walls that tells the history. Every part of them is very detailed, all made by only human hands. It's like a miracle, that they are still standing. Everyone who visit Coventry should see this place.
Coventry Cathedral is a must to visit if you are in the Coventry area. It’s easy to get to and walking distance to the downtown area. The stain glass is amazingly done. The rooms are wonderful to see. The ruins next door is nicely preserved and gives you an idea of its tragic history and a reminder what conflict can do. Great place to visit! Put it on your list.
Lovely concert, but a long time to sit on wooden seats. Not enough staff on bar, long queues.
Very interesting and somber look into the massive bombing raid on Coventry in 1940. Beautifully preserved as a monument. My Grandmother was in the Cinema with her Sisters that night, they survived of course otherwise I wouldn't be writing this.. 500 luftwaffe bombers flattened the city..
Absolutely awe struck at the size of this structure. Beautiful brickwork and architecture in both the old cathedral and the new build. The glass window wall rises into the sky illuminating your spirit. The Spire pierces the sky, scraping the clouds as they glide by. Honestly, a truly breathtaking building regardless of your religious preference.
Beautiful stained glass windows alongside other artwork. Easy to get to from the train station or parking.
A beautiful modern building that manages to feel as though it has stood there for hundreds of years.
Amazing architecture and glorious stained glass. Perfect to have a quiet while to spend with your thoughts.
A lovely cafe, although we didn't go in, it looked good and the food smelt amazing.
Well worth a visit, and right next to the bombed remains if the old cathedral. Also well worth a visit.
Absolutely stunning, I've always wanted to visit and it didn't disappoint. Staff were really friendly and informative had a great chat about the window.
I visited the ruins of the cathedral, the Blitz Museum and the newer chapel/museum. The ruins are beautiful, and the weather was forgiving, which was definitely a bonus!
I highly recommend the Blitz Museum - get some cash so you can donate 1£/person to keep the museum running! The staff there is absolutely lovely. They took us through the museum with plenty of interesting facts and conversation, it made the whole visit alive and fascinating. It is well worth the time and money to learn more about the cathedral and the history of Coventry.
The newer chapel is free of charge and a nice addition to the the older building. There is also a small gift shop inside.
This place is an incredible blend of solemnity and hope. Seeing the destruction of the original cathedral is a pretty sobering experience. Conversely, the new chapel is gorgeous with some of the most unbelievable stained glass windows. The whole place points people back to the hope of restoration that is meant to be brought through the Church not only despite, but even through the injustices of history.
Dissapointed overall. I reached out to the catherdral Monday and asked about opening and service times.I am still awaiting a response. Arrived and was told by a friendly welcome the service would start at 1215. We waited until 1230 but clearly the Eucharist was not taking place. Dissapointing you don't offer a daily service bank holiday or not.
An unique modern cathedral - a must see building.
We visited both cathedrals. The new one is celebrating it's diamond jubilee.
The old one is a forgiving reminder of the grief of war.
Superb remains. Fabulous new cathedral. Absolutely huge. Home for the world's largest tapestry but also a lesson on forgiveness. If you stop one place in Coventry...make it here. Entry is free, but donate if you can.
My spiritual home. This Cathedral is so good to be in. It's celebrating my 60 years since it's consecration.
Both Cathedrals, old and new very impressive. Next to university mixing hundreds of years of heritage with modern classics. Great photo opportunities and welcoming pepple. Close to Coventry train station, easy access all round.
Interesting juxtaposition of the old and new cathedral. Both are impressive for very different regions. The relaxed and welcoming services at the new cathedral are so welcome in contrast to the formal high church of most.
The old and new cathedral are both beautiful and it’s amazing inside, loved walking up the spire and getting the amazing view at the top, only £3. One of my favourite things in Coventry
Once again a very well organised visit to Coventry Cathedral to see G4. Great atmosphere, exceptionally clean, and a good selection of drinks.
Wonderful place to visit, have been several times over the years and always something new to see
Nice place to go both cathedral's are at the same location and both are amazing to see. Free to go in not a lot of places can say that.
Lovely place to visit. The contrast between the old Cathedral sadly fire bombed in world war II and the new Cathedral at its side is striking. There's a wonderful peaceful feeling inside the ruins which is dedicated to peace and reconciliation.
Spectacular ruins currently converted into a festive ice rink - skate hire included, prebooking of fixed one hour slots of which you can spend about half on the ice. Also the new cathedral adjacent is always worth a visit.
Nice peaceful place to visit
The building is very impressive, although personally I prefer the ruins of the old one just outside. The stained glass windows are the stand out here, for the old one it is the tower. The entry price to look around was a bit steep at £6 for adults, I do appreciate that it is to pay for the building's up-keep though.
Wow, what a place this is. It was free to get in (ever Yorkshire man's price) so we had a good look around. Beautiful.
Great place to visit and reflect. Would recommend climbing the bell tower the views of Coventry are great. It is quite a way up a spiral staircase but well worth it. The new cathedral is amazing with its futuristic looks contrasting the old ruin cathedral. There is a lovely little artifacts room downstairs. The windows are amazing so much to see and take in. Recommended a visit.
Not bad really but the overall design isn't great. I prefer more traditional stained glass and tapestry... The tapestry at the back is quite ugly on my opinion. The ceilings are high and it's kept well :)
Words cannot describe. Just the most perfect modern cathedral I've ever been to
A fine and inspiring contemporary cathedral. The Western glass wall is superbly decorated. The Chancel in evening light is beautiful. Notice the pennies embedded in the floor between the stone slabs
Inspirational details of the cathedral are the massive stained glass window near the entrance, the altar tapestry by Graham Sutherland, the Gethsemene Chapel, the cross of nails, the cross of charred beams from the old bombed cathedral, and lots more. Until May 5th 2019, the Knife Angel. Also worth going to the Herbert Art Gallery & museum opposite, the bombed cathedral next door and the old Guild House and corner house beyond that.
Not a religious person, but love these buildings, and the history. Art work etc. And this is lovely
We really enjoyed the tranquility mood. It is very nice that you don’t have to pay for the entry. It is free and you can leave a donation if you’d like. I enjoyed the coloured windows and the background music that was really calming. We will return here.
Coventry Cathedral is beautiful, the old Cathedral was bombed but the building still remains, the architecture is beautiful and there are plaques describing everything. The new part of the cathedral is beautiful but not as good as the old bombed cathedral.
Coventry St Michaels Cathedral's ruins was preserved after it was bombed almost to destruction by the German bombers in Nov 14th 1940, a feeling of goosebumps knowing the inexplainable history on how it remained standing despite the bombing. The new Cathedral is next to the ruins. To get there by foot It will take 20mins walk from the railway station
Visited for a graduation ceremony. Love the new and old architecture next to each other. Was a bit disappointed with the sound quality during the speeches, it was very quiet and difficult to hear. Obviously a levels problem because the music sound levels were great.
A beautiful place to visit even for the day ! In which we did.
We were picking a few things up and had 2 hours before returning to PRESTON, so in the time we managed to get around to a few places as you can see in the pictures.
Also a quick visit to the market which was astonishing and full of friendly people.
Strange as some people would say, others would say it was meant to be !!
In the market I knew I had to see someone, though who ? I’ve never been here before !
In the morning I had picked up a small stone/crystal and had carried it all day, I crossed paths with someone that gave me an insight to many spiritual meanings. I thanked the person and left.
Then after 5 minutes I went back, the person had left for awhile, I couldn’t wait and had to go, I laid the stone/crystal at the back of the stall and left.
I wonder what the person thought when they picked up the stone/crystal 🙏
Great cathedral and stunning windows and architecture.Addmision fee has been scrapped but plenty of places to leave a donation. The guided tour is well recomended too. Also pay a visit to the old ruins if you have time.
The Coventry cathedral is a lovely place for walk around. Even if you aren't religious. It seems like the entrance to the old cathedral is blocked off at the minute due to some kind of building works.
Even though the Cathedral was basically a bombing-site, it was quiet and peaceful in a very special way. Made me realize what mankind can reach after years and years of hard-work and can demolish in a friction of a night.
Beautiful place to look around, there are even little pieces of coloured glass panes in the windows here and there.
Have not been up to the tower but I think the view can only be magnificent.
The new Cathedral looks modern and I'm glad they kept the old one as well!
What a great experience! Very interesting and lovely building with some beautiful art pieces. Didn't expect this sort of architecture. Very impressive and really worth visiting.
Free entry. Worth a visit to see this unusual cathedral. Full of history. Sutherland's famous tapestry alongside John Piper's stained glass windows. Staff very friendly and informative.
A post modernist marvel. Absolutely stunning and even futuristic. Had an air of The Shining about it. Not like any other cathedral we have ever been inside.
Great to see this place getting so many attractions and events here to bring people in. The motofest being here was also great!
I first visited the present new Cathedral soon after it was built and first opened in the 1950s. Then it was impressive and startling in its modern appearance. Now sadly it seems a product of the time, cold grey concrete, and a bit forbidding. Dark inside but still a wonderful place for mediation and reflection on the changing times. The side chapels and quiet corners of peace and reflection in comparison to the stark ruins of the old. Always worth a visit whatever your belief and outlook.
You want a cathedral we've got one to spare. In our Coventry homes. History at its finest best thing to do in Coventry is to visit the cathedral to see the damage that the Germans left behind. It makes me proud to be from Coventry knowing the history this city has
Fabulous building. Beautiful stained glass window. A building that gives hope. And the best welcome poster ever!
Stunning architecture. Peaceful, a definite air of tranquility. A key aim is peace and reconciliation. I loved every moment I spent here.
A fabulous place to sit and think in peace.
Always a lovely experience going in here. There’s always something happening whether it’s music or theatre or arts or a concert and of course regular services.
A must see thing in Coventry, especially as it’s attached to the ruins of the old part which is great to walk through.
Also, fully recommend the ‘Rising Cafe’. The food and drinks are exceptional. Just go for it.
Photos attached are when the ‘Moon’ was inside for Festival of Imagineers.
The new,and the old cathedral next to each other so well designed, beautiful , time to reflect, and it's in such a central location
Bit of a disappointment, neo brutalist architecture suggestive of a 60’s subterranean car park but with superior windows. Perhaps reflective of the trauma and loss experienced by the city but felt more drawn to the blasted shell of its neighbour
Gorgeous cathedral with lots to see. Both the new and old cathedral can be visited and there are small exhibitions available as well.
Beautiful architecture and stunning stained glass work. Definitely visit if you're in the area!
