Reviews of Durham Cathedral
F. B.
Whether you are religious or not, Durham Cathedral has something for you. Beautiful architecture, movie history (some of Harry Potter was filmed here), medieval carvings etc. it’s lovely to see and brilliant that it is being restored and maintained so well. I visited during December 2021 as part of the Durham Lumiere and it was wonderfully lit up on the outside. My visit this week was to refresh myself on the beauty of the inside and it did not disappoint.
I didn’t indulge in the cafe but there were plenty of seats and tables that were nicely already out and the prices seemed reasonable. You can take guided tours and visit the tower too.
There are numerous staff/guides to help and inform you but if anything, there are so many at times I felt a bit watched!
This filters into a criticism. The Cathedrals admission is free but you are encouraged to donate (they recommend £5). There are numerous payment points but the one I didn’t like was the desk where they took payment, and people weren’t able to donate or students with no money seemed to cringe past through the barrier system trying not to make eye contact! Having already donated cash into one of the boxes early on my visit, I had to wait my turn behind a queue of tourists making donations and kind of edge past them. I really think this could be made less intimidating for visitors.

Amazing visit, now one of my favourite Cathedrals. Big thanks to the staff and volunteers who were without exception friendly, knowledgeable, entertaining and enthusiastic. Keep up the good work. Sad that the tower wasn't open, but there's no accounting for the weather!!

Amazing pieces of history and to just walk around this whole place is just mesmerizing, getting to see all the artifacts and knowing a few movies where filmed here make it that much more special.
Really enjoyed the time here with the family and exploring.

A most welcome and wonderful Cathedral, whether you are religious or not, there is a quietness, a calmness within. Volunteers and Clergy alike are happy to chat and give their knowledge on the history and importance of the amazing world UNESCO heritage site, and the artwork within is of equal importance.
A. 5.
Lots of history here. If you book a tour, you get a lot of information. There is also a museum linked to the cathedral. Nice to walk around the site. Harry Potter 1 & 2 were filmed here too. Harry Potter tours can be booked.
G.
A lovely cathedral.
Some very nice historical features in here and fantastic architecture. We loved the free entry and the requested donation approach. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We did want to go up the tower but the limited times didn't allow us a visit.
All in all, a nice way to spend an hour or two.
A. M.
Stunning cathedral, steeped in history. Well worth a visit. Has a museum, guided tours as well as historic artifacts on display. You will guess automatically the part of the cathedral Harry Potter was filmed in
L. C.
We only walked around the outside of the cathedral as we were waiting for an available table in the restaurant, but the view was amazing!! The design of the cathedral was so detailed and perfect. It's a shame that I live too far away to visit it again.
K. M.
Was there for a graduation ceremony this time and it was great! I have been there before and I found it very peaceful and serene just sit there! Beautiful and huge stained glass windows! Masterpiece of architecture!! Highly recommend.
A.
Amazing, and free. The Cathedral is huge. I spent 3 hours exploring.
One hour tour from a volunteer was really informative, and only a small cost which all goes to the upkeep of the building.
J. B.
Absolutely beautiful cathedral with so much to see. It's vast, with something new to catch your eye around every corner. The cathedral is free to enter but a £5 donation is suggested to help with the upkeep. A trip up the tower is a must for the amazing views over the town and beyond but at 327 steps up a spiral staircase then a decent level of fitness is required. There is a cost to go up the tower but the view is worth it. Over 3 hours we'll spent
D. K.
A must see for everyone, no matter their proclivity to religion. The architecture is amazing and fortunately this is still being looked after and the upkeep is ongoing and specialist skills are being retained. The volunteers are very welcoming and were very knowledgeable when asked questions. The roof top visit is a must for those not acrophobic. The views are incredible but the stairs will be a challenge for some.
D. G.
The complete experience of a cathedral. The Venerable Bede and Saint Cuthbert both buried here and all their associated history and information available from any of the numerous well informed and welcoming volunteers. The stroll through the town up to the cathedral and castle was an experience in its self. Climbing to the top of the tower was literally breath taking but worth it. There are also other museums, libraries and coffee shops in the complex. The castle is not open every day and several of the venues in the cathedral have charges.
B. S.
Another amazing visit, this time, sadly, to pay my respects, light a candle and say a prayer on the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family. Whatever the occasion and, no matter how times you visit you always see things with fresh eyes.
J. W.
What to say. Wonderful. Durham cathedral has to be one of the nicest anywhere. A must visit place. The interior is majestic and the stained glass - especially the modern windows- fabulous.
C. W.
Beautiful historic cathedral. Guides were helpful. There were no guided tours on the day we went. I would advise you to go early but check for closures due to funerals, weddings and the daily Church services.
Check out the smaller chapels for painted decorations.
They have a paper guide for £1. The cafe is nice but extremely busy. Food and drink seemed good value.
H. D.
Lovely Cathedral it was quiet when we walked round but it was New Year's Eve and Durham itself isn't busy. I'm guessing that's down to fears of omicron. Well worth the suggested donation.
L. C.
Very beautiful place. The architecture is stunning, the leaded windows fascinating and a joy to see. A wonderful part of our history & lots of information about the cathedral is displayed
S. J.
Its a beautiful cathedral. No ticket fee but one can donate if you like so. The structure itself is 1000+ years old and find many tombs inside the cathedral. One of the most spectacular thing and must see is the musical organ. Also movies like harry potter, snow white and the huntsman & endgame took locations from the cathedral.
J. S.
Beautiful Cathedral, lots to see. I love the stained glass windows and wanted to see the Rose Window, my husband is a retired carpenter and loves the ornate wood. Lovely gentleman told us the history of it all and spent a few hours looking around.
L. W.
Lovely cathedral. They ask for a £5 donation, which is good value. We instead bought £5.50 tickets to climb the 325 steps up the tower. A fabulous view, some people seemed to struggle with the steps. It gets quite narrow nearer the top too, but the tickets are timed so it's a one way system. The cafe is good, and it's especially nice to sit at tables in the cloisters. Some interesting art work around.
F. B.
Give yourself plenty of time to visit this stunning place. There's history everywhere and so much detail. We had the added pleasure of hearing the organist rehearsing and it bought the cathedral alive. Lovely cafe, stunning shop and great volunteers and staff.
M. L.
A truly beautiful and complentative place.
It's eerie silence reminded me of the power of art to sway opinion. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of newer windows with the oldest ones. But I struggle with religious sites like this, because people ascribe to them what cannot be said truly of anywhere.
S. K.
There’s a rich amount of history in this Cathedral from Cuthbert’s tomb to the Venerable Bebe tomb. This is a very large cathedral too. The cloisters are nice as well. It’s definitely worth a visit.
G. W.
Very beautiful building and grounds. Free entry with option of donation. Cafe and shop inside too. Very spacious. Staff were extremely welcoming and helpful: loads of culture
S.
Gorgeous Cathedral that is clearly the pride of the area.
Lots to look at so don’t be afraid to be slow and intentional in looking around.
It is one of the ‘sets’ for the Harry Potter movies.
Staff are a mixed bunch, some friendly, some just plain unapproachable.
This is definitely a working place of worship with scheduled services. No signs of an active pastoral or theological learning schedule (congregation coffee morning or Bible study groups) which is a shame.
Why 4 Stars? (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
• Beautiful distinct building
• good cleanliness
• excellent cafe
• good gift shop
• amazing museum and library
How to get that extra star 🌟?
• Mission and Evangelism -
You’re a church!! Yet there’s no opportunities presented to learn the gospel message or be supported in prayer during a visit. Thousands of tourists visit this place, think, how could you help them meet Christ?
M. G.
We all recognise how spectacular cathedral architecture is and Durham Cathedral is no exception. Walking through I felt there was a lack of information about it's history compared to some cathedrals I've visited but still worth a visit. It's in a nice setting near the castle University and worth walking through the old city area
K. H.
We came here on Easter Sunday 2022 and came in when the Easter service was halfway through. It was so beautiful and peaceful to be sat there listening to the choir and the organ. A little disappointing that the cathedral shop was closed but it’s understandable. It’s well worth a visit. Do go.
A. W.
Wow stunning building a donation of £5 is suggested on entering and a one way setting takes you past the donation desk.
It is well worth it stunning architecture and large even a walk around outside is impressive and ser in a pretty green square very close to the town.
D. R.
Have not been to the cathedral for many years, having moved to the north of Scotland but it is still as beautiful and magnificent as ever. The main pillars alone make it extra special. In my opinion the finest "church building" in the country for its architecture. Indeed, for me, it would rank as number one in Europe. Had lunch there today and it was superb. Great to be able to further support the maintenance of this priceless treasure.
Update - December 2021.
Attended the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols last night. A truly wonderful and magical evening. The choir were first class, as you would expect with this Cathedral choir and the organisation by the Cathedral authorities was faultless. Thank you for such a wonderful start to Christmas.
I. P. (. S. M. T.
If you are a tourist, you can't miss this place. And if you are a local you won't.
There is always something exciting going on. Last time, I noticed how wonderfully the morning sun plays through the stained glass (see my photos), and made a recording of the Christmas tree being put up.
It seems they really need donations now. Judging by how the entrance have been rearranged. I donate. Please consider too.
S. P.
One of the largest cathedrals in the UK situated on the High Point in Durham overlooking the town and next to Durham Castle. Interesting architecture and the resting place of the Venerable Bede and St. Cuthbert.
L. R.
I love the cathedral, its absolutely beautiful inside and out. Its a little bit of a steep walk up some cobbled streets but we'll worth it if you can make it.
There's a few places inside which you will definitely recognise from the Harry Potter films and there were also some marvel scenes filmed here too. The little tea shop inside is great too.
M. G.
Great visitor experience and a must if you are in Durham. The shear size of this historic cathedral, the vaulted ceiling and architecture are amazing. It is a working church so where we visited there were some activities and a service. There is no charge but the Cathedral asks for a donation. You could easily spend a few hours walking around.
C. H.
Such a beautiful cathedral!
Quite an incline when walking up to the cathedral itself but you can get a bus almost to the front door.
You don't really appreciate the size of the building until you get to it. The history and architecture is incredible.
When you're inside, wow! wow! wow!
Please take a look and prepare to be amazed!!
R. M.
Nice Historical views. There is a frequent mini bus service from town to the cathedral . If you park in the Prince bishops car park you can catch the bus from street near the exit on the top floor of the car park .
S. M.
Definitely worth a visit. Really stunning and all the staff have great knowledge if you chat to them! The view up the tower is something else. It's great they have a one way system.
c. h.
What a stunning place to go for a walk around the old town. Its also a harry potter location which made it extra magical like your at hogwarts. Its also free to get in.
P. X.
Beautiful church. A suggested donation is £5, tower cost £5.5, closed at 16.00. Worth to visit. A Harry Potter point.
L. C.
The cathedral is beautiful with utterly stunning architecture. Living close by I dont visit that often but when I do I feel very peaceful here. There is also a lovely little cafe on site.
I. B.
Stunning building, has to be seen 1st hand to be truly appreciated. All the guides appear to be volunteers and know their stuff when it comes to the building itself and it's history. Unexpectedly there was a Harry Potter link also which was welcomed by my youngest son.
A. D.
Awe inspiring and impressive. Being situated in the peninsula hill makes it magical to see from a distance. A great pilgrimage site for anyone who is looking to learn about Northumbrian saints. Cuthbert’s tomb, itself, is well worth the visit. Truly a powerful and holy place, full of history and beautiful architecture. Just make sure you're ready to climb the stairs to the top of the tower!
N. B.
The Moon display was fantastic in the Cathedral. Beautiful building with lots of stories to tell.
The only thing I didn't like at this visit is that when we arrived we had to queue at the cashier feeling forced to give donations. Which we always do anyway by putting coins in the money box(kids like to do that). Like this it was like we didn't have a choice...
W. G.
One of the best eexamples of early medieval cathedrals in the world. Film location for harry potter and the avengers endgame. Amazing events all year round combining light art and music. A must visit on everyone's list.
K. M.
Fabulously presented to visitors by an army of knowledgeable volunteers.
Well worth a visit. Lovely cathedral cafe too.
J. W.
A wonderful, awe inspiring structure. It is free entry but a £5.00 donation is suggested. The upkeep of the cathedral is very expensive. There is a lovely gift shop and the café serves light lunches and cakes.
O. C.
A place u need to see if u are travel in the North Est of England!
Only couple miles from A1.
The problem is to find a car park near to Cathedral on a busy weekend.
Probably much easier if u use the:"Park and Ride Belmond" (Belmont Park and Ride site is located on the A690, approximately 300 metres east of Junction 62 of the A1)
Tarrif is 2 £ per person including the car park until 7pm.
B. S.
So peaceful and beautiful. Lots of volunteers to explain what you're seeing. A wonderful place.
d. T.
If you are visiting the north east, Durham is must see and the cathedral is an absolute 100% must see. It's a beautiful building steeped in history
J. G.
Wow, what amazing place it is... absolutely stunning inside/outside. Great walk over 325steps to Tower and view is spectacular. Highly recommended
T. H.
A great grand cathedral made all the better with the moon exhibition. It's a shame that they haven't more information on the Harry Potter filming locations on site and that the chapter house is not fully open to the public. Nonetheless still a great visit
N. S.
Such a beautiful cathedral in Durham. I loved attending my friends daughter matriculation ceremony in the Cathedral organized by Durham University. The Cathedral has a wonderful interior, a mesuem with a cafe too.
C. S.
One of the loveliest places to visit, whether you’re a local or a tourist. I must have been over a hundred times and still look forward to every visit. Very calming, beautiful and interesting.. you must visit if you’re in Durham.
N. K.
Beautiful historic cathedral. Stunning inside and out. Peaceful and calm . A visit is highly recommended.
S. H.
A must place to visit if in Durham, free entry with optional donations. The cathedral has beautiful architecture, a good sized gift shop and cafe with lots of opportunities to take photos, especially if you're a Harry Potter fan!
Most recent visit included the Museum of the Moon exhibit which was amazing to see.
B. T.
Very large Cathedral on top of a hill with the Castle next to it. There is a bus service which runs up and down and very good disabled access. The cafe is inside serving excellent food and drink. Well worth a visit and you can easily spend a good couple of hours.
R. C.
Just such a great place to visit. It has an other worldly tranquility. Always look forward to going back
V. G.
Wonderful Day Celebrating 🍾 a Graduation.. Durham Cathedral provides a wonderful atmosphere, highly worth a visit..
L. S.
A fantastic place for anyone to visit whether you're interested in religion, history, architecture, art or even film locations!😉 The scale of this cathedral has to be seen to be believed. Extremely well preserved and worth an hour of anybody's time to visit. Highly recommended.
T. H.
Amazing! A must visit if your in Durham unbelievable architecture! £5 recommended donation
k. n.
Good social distances kept. Free admission though its nice to leave a donation. Lots to see with helpful guides. The moon is the most quirky thing I have ever seen inside a cathedral and of course if your feeling fit, climb the tower for an amazing view of Durham.
T. W.
One of the great buildings of the world. Burial place of Bede and Cuthbert. Medieval wall art + contemporary works. Extraordinary place.
W. Y.
Free entry with optional donation. Beautiful stained glass windows, art exhibits and interiors. It’s worth paying to go up to the top of the tower. Great view of the city.
D. A.
Beautiful cathedral..free entry ...They only charge for going up to the tower . But access and entry to cathedral is free, almost all access to the cathedral is free. A Very chilling atmosphere. They have a room all in dark with red and blue lights...creepy...great day out..you can light candles for the dead. They ask for 50p donation, but it's only a suggestion.
W. A.
Majestic and uplifting haven of spirituality. Experience the shrine of St. Cuthbert, and you will understand. Enough said.
Gentle whisper: The stained glass is simply wonderful--please take some time to admire and think and feel.
N. C.
Free admission and no booking required. The moon was the most odd thing I've even seen in a church but yet very cool. Very beautiful and well maintained both inside and out. I was amazed by the stained glass windows, very magical. Nice garden, I read somewhere that it's been a set for one of the Harry Potter movies.
G. N.
One of the most beautiful cathedral in the UK with no ticket fee. If you are a Potterhead you gonna love this place.
M. E.
That is an amazing view from the top of the tower. Totally worth the climb up. The building is truly fabulous, steeped in history and we were lucky enough to see the moon before it left.
F. N.
This is quite a lovely place to visit if you want to learn about the UK's post-paganistic history. You can as well visit the library where there's a video section that's if you love visuals than text as most of the learning you'll do within the cathedral are from texts. There was a market down the street that was open and there are shops around Tango Durham where you can have an amazing meal.
N. G.
What an amazing building of many fascinating architectural features. The shrine of St Cuthbert is an especially prayerful area.
M. S.
Always a pleasure to visit cathedrals, Durham no exception. Awe inspiring. Had lunch in the cafe.
Would return.
d.
Beautiful place so much to see and learn , trip up the tower is worth it don't forget to give a donation for the up keep
M.
Very impressive cathedral with a lot of historical artefacts, a café and a gift shop. Definitely worth the visit, not only if you like Harry Potter.
W. L.
What a magnificent Norman cathedral, free entry. Built in 1093, it's really worth visiting.
J. B.
Beautiful place to visit. Free entry, lots to see. The moon art installation is brilliant. Has gift shop and lovely cafe. We'll worth a visit
C. W.
It is quite a few years since I visited Durham Cathedral. This time was a monumental occasion being a service of reflection upon the death of Queen Elizabeth. The cathedral is stunning in every respect and well worth a visit.
K.
First time to Durham and it did not disappoint. The cathedral is magnificent, as is the castle. Some super spots for lunch down by the river.
A. B.
Its a spectacular cathedral. No ticket required for entry but donation is welcomed. It's almost 1000+ years old.
A. G.
Went to see the Museum of the Moon ( free during the day until 4pm or £6 for an evening ticket bookable online ) . It was incredible ! Well worth a visit. The cathedral staff were all lovely, friendly and helpful too. A fantastic visit. Superb !
C. P.
A wonderful place to visit and spend time in prayer or contemplation remembering those less fortunate than ourselves, especially Ukrainians at this present time.
B. C.
Suggested donation for entry. Beautiful windows with an interesting patchwork of old stained glass and contempory commemorative windows. Cloister walk and fine stone carving
B. C.
Fantastic place to visit for who loves history and especially Medieval architecture.
A. S.
Impressive building, unbelievably peaceful.
Few visiting options and cafe at back of courtyard.
N. Y.
Beautiful building, an amazing construction for its age. Can be a wait to enter but no admission fee (voluntary). The moon sculpture is in place at the moment for the November lumiere. Lots of stuff in the gift shop.
J. S.
I've traveled all around the world and this remains my favorite cathedral. It doesn't matter how many times I've been here, it always takes my breath away.
The staff is very friendly, very helpful, and very informative. It's free to get in but it's worth paying extra for the tower and exhibits.
S. C.
Magnificent architecture with some of stunning stain glass work and a truly world heritage site.
J. K. K.
Need a booking but free. Till November 11, they show the moon! Super cool moon. And don’t forget their garden. This place is Harry potter film set!
I. S.
A lovely place to visit with one of the best cathedral gift shops I've found. No charge for entry but we'll worth a gift of five pound per head.
D. W.
Lots too look at and for £5 you can walk up 300 steps and get a great view
O. T.
One of the top attractions in Durham. We'll run and managed, well presented. Cafeteria and tea garden exceptionally well run for tourists and leisure, great for relaxing in. There are a lot of different relics and artefacts in the cathedral, which is immense, though smaller than York minster.
M. B.
Beautiful cathedral. A walk up the tower is a must, the view from the top is spectacular. Great value. Attended a Chrismas Carol service; the Cathedral is a particularly fitting setting for the haunting piece Lux Aurumque played by the Reg Vardy band (a highlight, check out YouTube), and the choristers complete a truly ethereal experience.
H. P.
Durham Cathedral is an exceptional place from so many perspectives: architectural, space and solice so do make sure you have time to absorb and reflect on what your body senses. Also the cathedral's musical tradition and composers can help with deepening thoughts and understanding and emotionsb to make sense of life.
E. J.
One of the most beautiful and atmospheric places to visit. Always something different to see.
R. T.
What a place absolutely amazing and well worth the £5 donation. So much to read and explore. The windows are amazing. Did not feel right to be taking photos in a place of worship. Lighted some candles for loved ones no longer with us. Definitely a place to visit even if you are not religious as so much history and information.
M. E.
Love County Durham for a start. Called into the Cathedral to see "The Moon"...
Absolutely outstanding, waiting for Lumiere now!
C. O.
So lucky to have this beautiful Cathedral on our door step. Fabulous architecture, wonderful stained glass and a lovely coffee shop all topped off by the stunning location and interesting history. The peace and tranquility in the building allows you to get lost in your own thoughts. It is well worth a visit if you are in the area.
P. S.
Interesting place to visit. Its free bit you are more or less policed to donate mo ey which seems a bit pushy. Nice to finally see St Cuthberts grave after having come across his legacy so many places
G. B. (.
Amazing architecture, super well maintained. A must see location
S. R.
Impressive building well looked after and great centre price to the city and well worth a visit
G. S.
Brilliant Cathedral to visit in its own right but even more spectacular at the moment due to the Museum of the Moon installation... stunning.
Great café with lots of seating in the cloisters.
H. C.
The volunteer Guide named Dawn was outstanding today. So very impressed with her knowledge of the history of this beautiful Cathedral. She also helped a friendly person in a wheel chair with access via a ramp - this has been noted with appreciation.
God bless you Dawn.
I will make sure the new Dean hears about this. I will also make sure that the new Dean keeps donations optional unlike Salisbury Cathedral or York Cathedral where you have to pay to enter and it has become a tourist trap.
Durham Cathedral on the other hand welcomes all. Thank you.
Jesus would be proud of you all.
From the outside beautiful view, from the amazing welcome by John with his clicker, keeping people safe doing Gods work, to Dawn's fabulous Guide, to the optional donations unlike other Cathedrals charging a mandatory £11. Here it is optional and as it should be Gods door is always welcome. As Dawn says it is a place of Worship and not of a tourist attraction.
Dawn particularly who I noticed helped a Gentleman with disabled access. This is looked upon very well.
Thank you to Dawn.
J. H.
Durham Cathedral was a wonderful destination. There is so much history at this location.
S. B.
Well worth a visit..and enjoyed Durham very much
A. M.
Probably the nicest cathedral I have ever been to. Loved the modern stained glass alongside the old. The travelling moon exhibit the icing on the cake.
V. W.
It was a magnificent cathedral. I donate every time I walked in. I would love to assist in the preservation of such a beautiful and historically significant house of worship, in any capacity I can. I wish to thank all the people involved in keeping this house of worship in such pristine condition.
A. T.
Beautiful place to visit in Durham. Staff are lovely and will answer any questions you have.
S. B.
Fantastic one of the oldest cathedrals in the UK a visit to Durham wouldn't be compleat without it
J. C.
A 1000 year old cathedral still in use, can't give anything less than 5 stars 😂 the moon exhibition was fantastic 😍🌚
J. H.
What an interesting place to visit for adults and children. Well worth a visit and exceptional value for money. Was able to explore the ship.
K. D.
This place holds a very special place in my heart as my now husband proposed to me just in front of it. We have been many times and think it’s stunning such a beautiful building.
G.
Such a beautiful cathedral with stunning architecture. Well worth a visit to this special place.
D. D.
Very nice day spent here, the Moon was on display suspended in the main hall, wow its huge. Always nice people here, the cafe was busy but still the staff had time to welcome you with smiles.
s.
Nice town near Newcastle, and the cathedral, college, and library are quite quaint to visit
N. C.
The best cathedral in Britain IMHO and in the most dramatic setting unequalled by any other - that's a fact not an opinion!
D. B.
Beautiful place which is just as stunning inside as to what it is on the outside, with free entry and friendly staff.
S. R.
Amazing, just amazing. Feel the weight of 1000 years of history as you walk around.
B. K.
Beautiful to visit so much to see. So much history.
A. O.
Are u a big fans of harry potter? Then I guess you must know this place! Its a huge cathedral! The moon inside the catedral looks flawless! The ambiance, am I in hogwarts??? SO COOL! AS I EXPECTED! You dont need to pay when ypu enter this place, but you can make a donation inside. And also! The scenery near the riverside! I MUST BACK TO THIS PLACE when I am thinner. Lol
L. W.
Visited Durham Cathedral to see the Museum of the Moon exhibit
It was breathtaking to see the Moon in the Nave
and St Cuthberts shrine and the shrine for the DLI.
No visit is complete without seeing the door knocker
D. F.
One of the most interesting cathedrals in all of England.
W. C.
Amazing Landscape, Architecture piece of art.
You will love this building
B. M.
A beautifully maintained cathedral with a warm welcome.from the team who facilitate visitors to the site. We visited both at night to see the Museum of the Moon and during the day. There is a beautiful shop and cafe adjacent to the cloisters.
G. S.
Fabulous place to visit, truly awesome. Staff are friendly, polite and helpful.
M. M.
Durham Cathedral is renowned for its architecture and incredible location in Durham and also it's World Heritage Site. Cathedral is one of most visited pilgrim center and ancient Cathedral in North East of England.
J. F.
Durham Cathedral in County Durham is the burial Place of St Cuthbert former bishop of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Durham Cathedral should not be missed when visiting the beautiful town of Durham.
s. r.
Beautiful cathedral seeped in history. We were very fortunate to take part in a communion service. I would highly recommend taking a tour, our guide Isabelle was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. All the staff and volunteers were helpful.
R. G.
Romanesque cathedral with a unique aesthetic. Free to enter, and well staffed with helpful staff. Very nice cafe, that is also reasonably priced. Only deducted a star for the gift shop, where the staff were surprisingly rude. Apart from that the cathedral and the surroundings present an enjoyable experience. There is also a direct shuttle bus from the train station to and from the cathedral.
R. T.
Had a walk round inside Durham Cathedral, wow what a experience spiritual and beautiful architecture really enjoyed the day.
t. G.
When we got their ,there was a graduation ceremony. So we couldn't stay there.
Lovely place.
P. S.
I took my binoculars in. I was able to look at the stunning windows and eroded gargoyles close up. I would advise everyone else to do the same. It accentuates the magnificent skills of the artists, carpenters and masons. There is nothing like a sacred building to strike awe into us. Be it mosque or cathedral there is human at the heart of all it's clarity in measuring precisely.
Durham drops a nano point for it's architectural bodge and I always round down..
Staff and mystics very helpful and friendly which is one of my key criteria of a pleasant visit.

What an amazing place Durham Cathedral is. Astonishing that it was built around 1,000 years ago. I learnt something of the monks who originally lived there. Great Architecture, interesting history and still a place of worship (there was a baptism taking place when I visited) - all in a perfect city. Just go!
J. B.
Stunning building with beautiful stained glass and historical displays. Nothing that I could see mentioning the Harry Potter link. Great selection of stock in gift shop. Was a bit confused why the Lord’s Prayer was repeated every hour and felt a bit out of place during those moments. But overall felt comfortable admiring the building despite this.
T. C.
World renowned and fantastically historic cathedral. Many features and artefacts with an abundance of stained glass windows. A modern cafe is housed within and a particularly well stocked gift shop. If you are in Durham it should be top of your places to visit. Highly recommended.
M. “. L.
Classic architecture with an imposing scale, lots of bits to explore and wander around, very peaceful both inside and around the attractive grounds. Not far from some striking historic streets with great cafes.
G. H.
Just magnificent. The age, status, grandeur, importance, and sheer magnificence of this place make it an absolute must see. Amazed at how up close you can get inside the cathedral. Definitely worth the entrance fee if only as a donation.
D. B.
Beautiful building to visit. Amazing architecture and history. Nice little bear hunt for the kids and friendly staff. £5 donation to enter plus more for tours. Good cafe for tea and snacks.
K. S.
Fast moving queue to get in (summer holidays) but staff really friendly, enthusiastic and knowledged. Beautiful cathedral with great little cafe.
R. R.
Fantastic cathedral to visit and is free entry however donations are encouraged. Cafe, gift shop and toilets onsite.
F. S.
We visited the cathedral today. However, due to a service being on we weren't able to see all of the cathedral, which was a real shame.
Beautiful building and loads of history.
J. B.
Absolutely stunning architecture and one of my favourite places to visit, such a beautiful place and so peaceful.
M. M.
Fabulous Cathedral. As you enter, the first experience you get is the soothing "Light Art Work" by Chris Levine accompanied by etheral choral music.
The Cathedral itself has a number of highlights, the most notable of which is the "Shrine of St Cuthbert", a source of pilgrimage for over a thousand years. I loved the intricate carving of the Spanish Oak Choir and the beautiful stained glass rose window.
But if you book a tour of the Cathedral Museum (1.5 hours) you get a real behind the scenes look at the past life of the Cathedral and its monastic community as well as seeing treasured items of Saint Cuthbert. Our guide Sean, was so knowlegable, it was a pleasure to hear the story of this place told with such enthusiasm.
L. O.
I've been many times. We were having a girlie afternoon . We thought we would do the tour to educate ourselves. Our tour guide Mr Hillary was very nice gentleman . Smart and very knowledgeable. We learnt a lot even though we've visited many times. We'll worth it. Lovely.
A. M.
Spectacular as ever. Entrance via the understorey with patterned stone arches into the nave. Not a long visit as the cathedral was closing. To walk back into town, we turned left before the library down one of the many narrow allies of Durham, and came out on a high up pathway, looking down on the river Wear through sunlit Spring foliage. 😊
c. w.
Durham is a beautiful city to visit. Steep hill to the Cathedral and Castle but well worth the effort. The stained glass windows in the Cathedral are fantastic. Durham University have taken over the castle and other buildings. Lots of cafes along the river. Well worth a visit.
N. H.
Lovely cathedral, lots to look at, free entry, they do ask for a donation though if you are able, apparently you can climb the steps up to the tower. Rather a little uphill walk if you park down in one of the car parks, & walk up, you can take a bus up.
B. D.
One of the Great Cathedral in Great Britain in itself, with the added interest of its absolutely stunning location ! Climbing the tower is a must (although 325 steps), as the view is really incredible. Best views from the ground are from the other side of the river.
D. D.
A beautiful place to visit. Stunning inside and out its hard not to be impressed by the architecture of these structures which where built hundreds of years ago. I'm not particularly religious but walking around these magnificent places does make you wonder if there is some higher order in the heavens. A must visit place if your visiting Durham for the day or longer.
N. D.
Fantastic night at Lumière show tonight. Well organised and great show
k. m.
Fabulously impressive building both inside and out. Highly recommended to visit
G. B.
I visited the Cathedral on Friday 6th Augustus MMXXI. I am Jewish not Christian, but I love visiting holy places regardless of my religion (except for Hindu Temples, I won't visit those) and I have to say it is the second most impressive Cathedral I have been too, the first being the one in Seville in which no Cathedral comes close to. The bad reviews complain about not being able to take photographs inside, and though I took no photographs inside myself, there were plenty of other people doing this and not being approached about it. I spoke to a very friendly volunteer at the tomb of St. Cuthbertus, he certainly helps paint the stereotypical 'friendly Geordie' narrative, in which most Geordies I met on my visit also fit into. I must give congratulations to the mensch playing the organ, he was really good!
J. R.
Incredible building ... world heritage site.
M. A.
Durham cathedral is arguably the best in the country, especially it's location on the meander, overlooking woodland, river a beautiful small compact city. Easy access by bus and train. Use park and ride as it is terrible to park. The Cathedral is spacious, with a wonderful interior. It now let's you photograph for free, which is excellent. Good cafe and shop.
C. C.
Truly a spectacular building and fully in everyday use, the history of the cathedral is very well explained throughout or you can take the guided tour, there are several ways to get up to the Cathedral including bus service. There is no car parking, but it does have a cafe.
A. S.
Always beautiful and special to visit Durham cathedral.
Really enjoyed the added bonus of seeing the moon
R. T.
A very large cathedral with a lot to see. Free to enter but we gave a ten pound donation. Still worth it.
A lot of people there for the Harry Potter connection.
Well worth a visit and sited beside the castle so you may as well visit both together.
C. B.
Amazing atmosphere and insight into the history of the cathedral. You can have a guide walk you around or do it yourself.
M. G.
Moon experience was on during this visit - exhibition on until 18th November 2021. Beautiful cathedral which is well worth a detour to take in.
F. H.
Such a beautiful place to visit. Lots to see and learn about its history
J. M.
A very interesting place to visit. I highly recommend doing a guided tour of the Cathedral. My guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the place. Beautiful building. More so, in my opinion, than York Minster.
P. R.
Beautiful cathedral well worth a visit nice cafe and gift shop onsite aswell , if you'stand still in cloister you'll see the bats flying over your head !
T. W.
unreal place very peasant peaceful and relaxing something special about this place
R. T.
Great cathedral to visit. Fully open now (post-covid) at writing, July 2021.
Free to enter but there is a charge to visit the top viewing deck.
Extremely friendly staff who are incredibly helpful.
Lovely cafe/restaurant with foos facilities and shop.
Very well maintained and looked after.
Was also a location of several scenes in Harry Potter movies.
However, it is worth noting that these are gorgeous in there own right and can't be compared to the gold encrusted decorations as the European cathedrals.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
j. h.
Amazing/ Great place for pointless prayers to an imaginary friend, or the occasional graduation ceremony 🎓🏅
l. s.
This Cathedral is well worth a visit ,larger than I thought it would be and just beautiful inside .Little bit of a walk up hill to get to it but there is a bus we saw that you can catch.Like I said we'll worth look.
A. C.
We went to see Queen by Candlelight. WOW, the acoustics were superb the clergy and staff all joined in . Almost a religious experience. I would definitely go again to this beautiful place.
P.
Lovely setting. Stunning architecture. Beautiful stained glass windows including a modern one. Several side Chapels, gorgeous font, amazing clock. Cafe, shop and toilets available. Donation requested to enter - paid the £5 suggested as worth every penny and goes toward huge upkeep. Have visited 3 times in 10 years and each time notice something else. Will definitely visit again next time I'm in the area.
I. L.
Definitely one of the best we have visited. Unusually intimate for a cathedral which really adds to the experience. Staff are very helpful and keen to discuss and answer any questions.
The number one must see in Durham in our opinion.
P. P.
Just beautiful. Went a couple of days before Queen Elizabeth 's funeral. So much to see, so peaceful. Very good cafe too. Durham is a very nice town with great park and rides that are suitable for Motorhomes.
B. G.
What an amazing and historic building. There is something to take your breath away everywhere you look. If you are in Durham well worth the visit. The outside grounds and green out the front are also ideal in the sun if you want somewhere peaceful to sit and contemplate the world or sit and read a book.
D. D.
Very big inside and beautiful i reccomend anyone to see this amazing cathedral
S. W.
Beautiful Durham Cathedral! Entry is free, but donations welcome. The cathedral is stunning, peaceful and interesting. You can book tours for around £7.50 per adult. Children are cheaper and I think a family if four costs £20. The cafe has plenty of seating, with some tables actually in the cloisters. The food is good, if a little expensive. There's plenty to see for those interested in history.
D. M.
Didn't spend much time here, some amazing facets but alot more impressive and larger cathedrals in the UK
A. C.
we just love walking up to the cathedral and also around the grounds and river walks.
N.
Very helpful lady at the beginning of our entrance who talked to us about the stained glass windows that are famous in the cathedral, new and old versions that keep the tradition alive. Even M&S has a stained glass window. See if you can spot their take on the last supper, which children thought looked like cabbages on a market stall.
K. L.
Very large cathedral at the top of the hill in the city centre. Knowledgeable tour guide (Anne), tour lasted just over an hour. Nice cafe and plenty of toilets.
P. D.
Brilliant! It is so muscular inside. Several of the windows, old and very recent are superb. St. Cuthbert's shrine is extremely serene; an excellent place for contemplation. The restaurant looked very good, though we didn't visit, but the shop was very good indeed and the staff were visibly very helpful to customers,
K. v.
How can one possibly begin sufficiently to praise Durham Cathedral? History, architecture, beauty, an active life of prayer and devotion - Durham has them all, plus friendly guides who share their knowledge.
M. F.
Breathtakingly beautiful hollowed grounds.
T. M.
Nice history of the cathedral and preservation of their rich heritage
R. W.
What a national treasure, one THOUSAND years old, the resting place of three saints. The history it's seen, the culture it's inspired, the numbers of people that have passed through its doors. It's enough to make ones brain melt.
Great café lovely cloisters.
Religious or not, and I'm not, this is our history and as such needs visitors to help maintain it.
N. m.
I Love Durham Cathedral I follow online ever morning, but last week my friend & I visited on Saturday on our journey home, having midday Holy Communion. It's a place of Internal Peace . 🙏🙏🙏
L. M.
First time flying out of the country and was blessed to the visit so many beautiful places, Durham being just one them. The cathedral was so amazing!
S. H. W.
Simply majestic, staggering setting, and VERY VERY well-run indeed. Friendly and 100% helpful people - from the guide JACK, to the deacon with a great beard and to the Chapter Clerk....all so good and INTERESTED in their work. Will go again
G. C.
Amazing large Cathedral well worth a visit and a climb to the top is also worth a look
M. C.
The most beautiful holy building. Whether you love St. Cuthbert, St. Bede or Harry Potter you will find them all here
Lovely cafe, shop and clean toilets, everything is as you would expect for such a prestigious place
C. Y.
Meatloaf by Candlelight, the sound in the Cathedral was amazing. There was also bats flying around in the Cathedral during the evening.
I. k.
Beautifully preserved and most impressive. Also it’s part of the old city with castle and market.
M. G.
Beautiful building. Small grandchildren kept occupied. £1 return on shuttle bus from railway station was an added bonus.
a. O.
A lovely place of worship, housing many artefacts
C. C.
I'm not a religious person but I do like the architecture of such buildings, done at a time when cranes didn't exist, but these places are massive and built by hand. The was built around the Shrine of St Cuthbert which is at one end of the Cathedral.
R. W.
Magnificent awesome in the proper sense , here lies the Venerable Beade and Cuthbut, both Anglo Saxon Saints pre conquest
S. J.
One of the most beautiful buildings in the world.
J. C.
Incredible history and enjoyable, self paced tour. The stained glass is wonderful. The Cafe, a wonderful finish.
C. H.
It's a very nice (and big) cathedral. Parts of Harry Potter was also filmed here as well which is nice.
G. H.
Durham Cathedral is well worth a vist, it is spectacular inside. The staff are friendly and willing to answer your questions. It has a nice cafe with good food. The streets up to the Cathedral are steep and would be difficult for anyone with mobility problems, however there is a bus that takes you up there every 20mins. The town is also with a look round.
S. M.
Awsome place..defo need a visit.
S. M.
Amazing place. Its definitely worth a £5 donation to visit. (It's technically free but worth every penny). To see more photos please visit my Instagram page @scottstravelphotos
A. T.
We were visiting the Cathedral again on our way to take part in the Great North Run. Sadly the part we wanted to visit, The Treasury, was closed so we were disappointed on this occasion. Lesson learned though, check times before going. Mind you the size of the pillars and their patterns never ceases to amaze as do the tombs of St Cuthbert, and the Venerable Bede, at either end of the building.
The up side was that we had a little longer to enjoy the cafe and the book shop.
We look forward to our next visit (times checked!)
S. A. A. R.
Beautiful Cathedral must visit if you are in the area.
k.
Amazing cathedral, greatly recommend to go with family and friends.
B. P.
Lovely Cathedral made the top of the tower phew
e. c.
Lovely cathedral. Very big. Free to enter but can give donation. Good cafe inside as well.
J. B.
Durham Cathedral Lumiere. The Cathedral is 1000 nearly or over years old. Also its free to get in donations welcome. You can see the Cathedral from the train going to Edinburgh. The first Harry Potter film was also filmed here amongst the cloisters and you can see the Tower in the background.
K. R.
Great experience. You don't get much more historic than this.
P. A.
Always nice to have a look round
K. W.
A very lovely old cathedral. Views from Tower would be great in clear weather. Definitely worth visiting.
D. A.
For anyone visiting Durham this is a must to visit. Excellent guides, well worth the £5 donation and following your tour a trip to the cafe is highly recommended all home-made produce and reasonably priced.
R. M.
Beautiful. An awe inspiring place. Peaceful. Interesting stuff about St Bede. Also a gorgeous glass exhibition throughout. We loved it.
A. A.
I have seen a lot of churches and cathedrals but this one was a most impressive one. I love it's simplicity and solidity. My favourite pieces in the cathedral are black pilars. Material used for them comes from Frosterley. It's called Frosterley Marble. Beautiful fossils!
Cathedral is definitely worth visiting no matter when. Always something to discover.
T. J.
Beautiful, serene, atmospheric and moving
M. H.
Cathedral has similar architecture to other christian buildings from the period. Some interesting history and artwork. Did not go into the museum as this is an additional charge and it was close to closing time.
S.
Absolutely stunning,well worth a visit
A. B.
Lovely walking around.
c. k.
Went to tribute to George Michael by candlelight, disappointed as acoustics too loud, only candles at front, so rest of the area was lit up by lights , so no atmosphere, however singer was ok, female singer in black good voice. I paid 2 pounds for a can of lemonade. If it goes to the cathedral that's ok. The cathedral there is nothing to complain about, a beautiful place.
J. H.
Went for the Queen's Service. What an amazing cathedral. A must if you're visiting Durham. Absolutely stunning ❤️
L. W.
Donation entry, beautiful building, worth a visit
J. C.
A first visit to this lovely Cathedral....
Some beautiful windows, both old & new.... and the building itself is superb.
D. S.
How did they build churches like this in the Middle Ages?
D. P.
Awesome place. Climb the 325 steps to the top of the tower if you can. Somewhat alarmingly, there's a defibrillator half way up!
A. V.
Of course attracted by the HP movie location this Cathedral has much more stories to tell. So take your time to take notice of them and don't forget to climb the 325 stairs to the top of the tower.
R. W.
My favourite building in the world. The history, the intricacy, the atmosphere. We joined a choral service this morning, listening to chants and verse that have been sung for over a 1000 years in this place! You can feel the spirit of the ancient Northimbrian Saints in the air as you explore the quiet corners and secret carvings. Take time for a guided tour if you can as there are so many layers of deep meaning and hidden history behind every facet of every part of this mega structure. Even the most overlooked part has it's fascinating story to tell. The people who work here are so friendly. One of the Church leaders chatted for 10 mj yes to my son about sloths, and we were lucky enough to come in a day when the education team had organised a picnic and games in the cloisters to celebrate the jubilee. A truly special place. The view from the top of the towers is unsurpassed in the North of England and well worth the climb if you can manage it. You can easily spend a whole day here, but allow at least 2 hours. The museum was closed on a Sunday, so we couldn't see that.
A. P.
Historical Cathedral, very beautiful.
J. O.
Absolutely amazing!! Attended my daughter's graduation here , just WOW what a truly awsome setting, couldn't ask for anything better .
P. T.
The awesome, historic building is always good to visit. The consistency of maintenance can make photography a challenge but the upside is that the building is in an excellent state of repair. On this visit (30 Nov 19) there was a busy market inside the cathedral at the same time as a Christmas carols service was on. It was very busy but had a good atmosphere and was well managed.
I also returned to try out some night photography in January 2020 and can recommend the cathedral as a great subject after dark!
A. L.
Covid-safe. Some parts of the cathedral are closed during the day for cleaning. This is usually sometime during lunch time so keep that in mind when you visit. You are required to wear a mask to visit, and the suggested donation is £3.
The cathedral is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and imposing and full of marvelous art and architecture. It was built in 1063. However, my most favourite bits were the modern stain glass windows that really contrasted with its surroundings. The cathedral cafe and shop are also open if you're in the mood for food or just some souvenirs! The cafe has al fresco seating overlooking the courtyard, making for a nice lunch spot.
G. F.
Beautiful cathedral which is well maintained, I loved the architecture. You're not currently able to wonder as freely as usual due to covid restrictions but there's still plenty to view, and the cafe and shop are worth a visit off the cloisters from 12pm. Staff are friendly and enthusiastic. I'll definitely be back.
K. B.
Free Entry, the Cathedral asks for a donation so worth £10 off anybody.
The original Hogwarts set for Harry Potter fans and then Asgard for The Avengers
Purchase the £1 guide for all critical points within the Cathedral eg Nine Alters, St. Cuthberts Shrine etc
Durham Cathedral in Lego has to be seen, great craftsman building at its finest
World Heritage Site
Beautiful City and Home Town 💙💛
I. F.
An absolute gem in the north of England. Spent a couple of hours here taking photos. You can use your visit to improve your historical understanding of the Cathedral or simply sit and contemplate. You could visit for free but the suggested donation is £3 which, as a minimum, you should give. There are a couple of paid areas one of which is the Central Tower. It's only £5 but worth it for the panoramic views from the top. Be warned it's 375 spiral steps!
K. W.
Ordinary words can't describe the beauty and majesty of Durham Cathedral.
V. S.
Amazing place. Love it!
S. F.
Felt the Holy spirit in here today. Had a visit and was not disappointed. Staff friendly and extremely helpful. Hoorah.
B. C.
Stunning Cathedral. Friendly staff and volunteers. Don't forget to see the museum exhibits in the great kitchen.
Lovely floral displays using what look to be UK grown seasonal flowers and foliage. Would love to see these arranged without toxic floral foam - it is completely possible and there really is no valid excuse which would justify its use. It damages our environment by releasing horrifying microplastics into our soil and water courses.
We all need to reassess old behaviours in light of the climate crisis and the church has a responsibility to drive this change in their organisation
N. G.
It was fairly enjoyable I didn't get much interaction and felt that the displays were a bit idealised. We enjoyed our rides on the vintage transportation.
V. B.
The most gorgeous cathedral. I real jewel in the North Easts crown. I am incredibly bias as I studied Theology next door and frequented the Cathedral libraries when I was a student. Its well worth a visit. I go every year :)
A. F.
When visiting Durham, the trip is not complete without a visit to the magnificent Cathedral. My boyfriend and I had gone to Durham for around 5 days and kept the last day to visit the Cathedral. The majestic cathedral sits high on a hill in the centre of the city.
Despite parts of the Cathedral being extremely restricted due to Covid precautions there were a lot of things to see.The staff were friendly and helpful and gave us a brief overview of the new guidelines under covid precautions.
Durham Cathedral to me is a beautiful sanctuary of peace and it's also depicted as a World Heritage site. I was in total awe at the classy , and beautiful architectural structures and designs. And was also touched to see the new stained window dedicated to a young girl in 2019 by her parents..
I was also glad to see the place where the original Harry Potter film was set for Harry Potter fans. A nice gift shop with variations of items at good prices. The Cathedral Lego blocks is also a must see . I highly recommend visiting this sanctuary at least once.
A. A.
Beautiful City with a Magnifient Catherdral in the heart of it all.
Lovely Riverside walks & places of interest. Loads of Restaurants and places to eat. Shopping varies from indoor markets to Boutique shops.
D. L.
Lovely cathedral to visit, all quite contained and not as daunting as other cathedrals. Suggested donation of £3. Some parts were closed due to COVID. Very friendly and helpful staff too.
W. R.
Stunning cathedral with the beautiful old town centre around it next to a lovely walk by the river. Plenty to see and eat as well as some accessible paths
N. H.
Truly stunning cathedral, they recommend a donation of £3 but it is optional. The pillars are beautiful and don't forget to look up so you see all the details. It is beautiful and happily spent 1 hour inside
E. C.
I can't believe I'm.giving the most beautiful building in the North East of England only 5 stars but their treatment of local patrons is becoming increasingly uncomfortable. It's difficult to explain but ill try !!
In 1991 I had for want of better term religious experience in the cathedral causing me to attend early morning communion services there fir 5 consecutive years on a daily basis. It worked out perfectly. Different lovely Chapel with less than half a dozen regular congregstion in each finishing at 8am each week day morningngivingnyou time to tavel.to start work at 9am.wherever. this is sadly now IMPOSSIBLE as this churvhbserbice has now been removed from.the weekly itinerary and , furthermore I as a very local Durham.perdon must queue forvtgebrightbto enter this marvellous structure of 1000 yesrs standing and , once inside be shepherded to a reception desk to answer 20 questions before proceeding to view the unparalleled beauty of within . The sooner there is a flat rate entry fee of say £5 that everyone must pay regardless of colour creed and nationality , then there will continue to be the feeling of discomfort amongst local.people tthst hey could pay up £35 a week for the privilege of entering their local cathedral as regular visitors/ worshippers irrespective ofvthe fact they may wishbto donate funds privately in many collections boxes beyond the Checkpoint Charlie system.operating directly within the main portal !
Of course the sights remain breathtaking which is whhy its such a shame that any form of criticism bevdeemed necessary regarding the daily running of this wonderful place.
I love attending services but the current situation that prevails regarding entry and donations puts me off tonsuch a degree thatbim.lucky if I visit once a year never mind.dailybas had been the case 30nyears previously. The highlights still prevail of course ... the unparalleled , dominant rose windiow the resplendent tombs of both the Venerable Bede and Saint Cuthbert , the NinevAltars Chapel area with exquisite embroidered back panel.depicting Northumbrian wildlife. Also the general feeling of awe that this Csthedral.builfingbhas been situated on Durham.soil for 1000 years. Yes for goodness sake it requires mostba bottom.pit of funding ! I'll end by saying I psy an ongoing sum of £6 a month as a Friend of Durham.Cathedral. This establishment will benefit from.a further lump sum donation payment upon my death and yet I m still not comfortable when visitors ask whether I'd like to showvthem round the building as as a one off enjoyable exercise. It's such a shame !

Beautiful historic building, well preserved and presented and architecture that is inspirational. Definitely deserves a visit.
P. H.
Well worth a visit,a marvellous building nice refectory & shop too..A little bus runs from the market place & railway station to the cathedral which is good cos it's a steep climb from the shops...
M. W.
Lovely place. Free entry but you are encouraged to donate £3 not a great amount to help fund the upkeep of the building. You can see the conservation for yourself if you go up to the top of the main tower (which costs £5) with spectacular views. You can see the modern stonemasons' repair work. Staff are very friendly and willing to help with info and history. Worth the visit.
S. M.
I love this place. Having met my now husband here as students 16 years ago, we now regularly return with our two sons.
The Lego replica is fantastic for the little ones and there’s a great cafe here too.
V. O.
Beautiful cathedral worth the donation paid. The photos do not do justice to the wonderful architecture and beautiful setting. Very peaceful and highly recommended to walk along the river wear and view from a distance as well as inside the cathedral.
S. S.
Grand, one of my favourite places, im lucky that i am local to this, if i wasnt i would 100 percent drive to the cathederal.
Get the guided tour and also go up to the top of the tower its worth it.
Saint Cuthberts shrine is spectacular, you can feel an energy, a connection to the universe.
A. P.
Friendly guides, lovely cake, pleasant cafe and spacious shop. Interesting LEGO Cathedral, two examples of open up the doors and there are all the people from the childhood hand trick/game

Stunning! One of the more beautiful cathedrals I have visited. The stained glass is really beautiful, and they have art displays throughout. The architecture is stunning, and all the staff/volunteers are very friendly. They strongly suggest a £3 donation upon entry (and I would recommend doing it), but it is not mandatory, so please don’t be deterred if that’s holding you back from going inside.
I also paid the £5 to go up the tower. It was A LOT of stairs, and you don’t get the best lookout points, but in the spots you can see through you do get lovely views of Durham. I lucked out and went on a fairly sunny day.
A. L.
Was great to go. Full of history.
Also a bonus to see where some of the Harry Potter scenes where filmed.
J.
Beautiful place to visit, Amazing architecture, Stunning views, and awe inspiring scenes. Work on the tower has been completed, and looks brilliant now all the scaffolding has gone. A true icon, and attraction to the north of england! Absolutely amazing, and recommend a visit from anyone, religious or not.
L. T.
Great church, designs are so intricate it's incredible. Getting to it on foot was an experience in itself, walking along the river with the beautiful trees! Especially loved walking the corridors of Harry Potter! The courtyard where Ron spewed slugs! Could only see the Transfiguration classroom through the window but that was also super cool.
A. M.
As a sight to visit it's beautiful. You get the sense of majesty the architects designed it to install in you. If only there were staff ready to explain the majesty of the living God. Particularly like the fossils in the marble pillars by the rose window. Also the library above the giftshop is excellent to work in if you become a reader...
M. E.
What a beautiful historic place. Holding centuries of life in Durham this cathedral is full of life today. It offers a perspective that spans the centuries. It offers a place for tea and something to eat. Yet difficult to find quiet for worship or contemplation.
R. P.
Beautiful cathedral - free to enter (donations gratefully received). Practically full access, and you can pay a small fee to go up the tower. Delicious cheese scone- huge, fluffy, good amount of cheese and a bargain at £1.80 (Nov 2019).
S. H.
Amazing cathedral, lots to see, loads of history (take a tour lasts about an hour) £5 adult, £2.50 child. The cathedral ask for a minimum £3 donation to look around but worth it. Interestly the cloister was used in Harry Potter films. Great cafe and gift shop also.
D. W.
The architecture is amazing, The masonry is outstanding, there are some beautiful pieces of art there as well, the whole place has a serene feel to it. My favourite part was the Gothic arch in the main part of the cathedral, which was the first of its kind and all other gothic arches were based on it. There is a ladies altar room which was built after the main cathedral as the monks didn't let ladies into the main cathedral, this was built after the main cathedral which in the oldest parts are 600 years old. The stained glass windows are fantastic especially the rose window. There is a modern window called the millennium window featuring aspects of this ancient town, it incorporates well into the cathedral. The Cathedral is easy to find and well worth a visit though some parts are inaccessible to some disabled. There is no parking at the cathedral unless you have a permit. There are toilets and a disabled toilet. There is a large well stocked gift shop, a great tea room, (I would totally recommend the cream scones they are delicious.) There is a Lego model of the cathedral which was built by sponsored bricks it's a nice thing to see and it is really well made. There are stewards all over and they are worth talking to, they are source of information about the place all very approachable and knowledgeable. Take the time to wander the cloister and take a peak at the treasures room where the ancient door knocker that is 600 years old is housed. There are a few small places where you can buy a candle and leave messages, there are services at specific times. If you get the opportunity you should go there there is too much to tell to fit in a review.
I. E.
Superb historical monument well worth the suggested donation. For the harry potter fans a chance to take pictures in one of the films sets.
R. V.
Was a very interesting place to visit. If you take your time and read the plaques you will learn some interesting things.
L. W.
Amazing place to visit especially if there's a service on awesome accessibility even the toilets are clean would definitely visit again
S. W.
Visited the Durham cathedral that houses the time of St Curtbert and Venerable Bede. It is a wonderful place to visit and enjoy the magnificent building dates backs to 10th Century. It appeared many times in the Harry Potter movies series.
J. H.
I have been here many times and each time I am even more impressed with it.
Last night we arrived in Durham at 8.45pm and the sun was still shining so I took my youngest daughter on a short walk to see the cathedral for the first time. The sun was still showing this beautiful building off and she too was impressed.
I love Durham and all it has to offer a visitor
R. R.
Nice, quiet cathedral with superb stained glass windows (some old, some modern) and lovely patterns on the stone work. This place is very important for the development of Christianity in the UK and the influence of Irish monks. Take a walk through the Cloisters, a very Harry Potter-ish feel and have a meal in the restaurant (great sausage rolls) and be impressed by the huge Lego model of the cathedral
T. V.
Wonderful building near to the centre of historic Durham. I’ve been before but on this occasion was attending a concert in the Cathedral.
Like most cathedrals, Durham has centuries of fascinating history to explore and there’s usually some volunteer staff in their distinctive red capes to talk to.
Would thoroughly recommend a visit.
A. S.
Highly highly enjoyed it.
If you are in UK you should come here.
Specially for a Harry Potter fan. You will instantly recognize it as Hogwarts.
The entry is free.
10 min walk from the station.
The entry is free but you can take a tour for £5, for students it is £4.5.
The tour is amazing, the cathedral has a very rich history.
Photography inside the cathedral is prohibited. But you can click pictures in the cloisters, the place where parts of harry potter were shot.
B. M.
Been coming to this place all my life and always ask myself the same question...how did they manage to build such a magnificent building with the tools they had at the time ?? Remarkable.
A. S.
A very pretty and a massive Cathedral in the city of Durham. Undoubtedly one of the famous tourist attractions in the UK / north east. This is a UNESCO historic site as well as included in Harry Potter's movie recordings. As you can already see, this has so much of things to offer. It is free to enter but £3 donation is encouraged. If you are in the Durham City, don't miss this Cathedral. Thank you.
N. W.
Signed the book of condolence for HM Queen Elizabeth II here today. Cathedral peaceful place for quiet contemplation and worship 🙏
J. E. L.
What a wonderful place, it always amazes me on how they managed to build these magnificent places without today's modern equipment. The history about cathedral is very interesting also
I. O.
Cathedral like no other. It seems that Christianity is in harmony with pagan attributes. Great place to see, exceptional energy, mind blowing legend.
A little downside - you have to pay to see an exhibition.
M. S.
A must if visiting Durham!
N. L.
I would like to feature artists engravers also photographers perspective of a visit to Durham for centuries artists like Turner Girton Carmichael Cotman all came and sketched painted this unique landscape that has hardly changed over the past 930 years. Then photographers must have taken millions of images of the various angles of Durham's landscape
M. L.
Lovely place to visit with the family I can’t count how many times I have been to the cathedral and every time I go I learn something new. It gets even more interesting, when your lucky enough to get behind the locked doors and see all the parts the pubic can’t but that just one of the things we have to do in the fire service.
r. h.
Lovely river walks, fantastic castle and cathedral, historic city , cathedral is stunning when lit at night, cafe and shop, toilets , no parking and the road leading to the cathedral has a congestion charge. Short walk to the market place and river, lots of green places to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet .
H. Q.
One of the most RECOMMENDED places in UK!!! Splendid, marvelous.....Durham Cathedral is worthy any compliment. It also has a nice discount for students of Durham University if you want to pay a visit to their amazing museum!
S. S.
Visited last November. Ticked off a long pending item on my wishlist. Blissful place. There is a short walk up from where the bus drops you, to get to the cathedral. And that walk is brilliant. It adds to the drama and the big reveal of the cathedral once you turn the corner.
B.
Such a beautiful cathedral. Lots to do including the museum, the tower, shop and tea rooms and lovely, friendly, helpers and guides.. We keep going back.
C. H.
Quite nice. Possibly not the most important cathedral, but well maintained with some interesting features. An active church too, not just a tourist trap. We spent more time than we expected - which is a good endorsement.
P. W. (.
Absolutely brilliant, stunning Cathedral and especially poignant after the death of our Queen
N. H. A.
The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham, commonly known as Durham Cathedral and home of the Shrine of St Cuthbert, is a cathedral in the city of Durham, England. It is the seat of the Bishop of Durham, the fourth-ranked bishop in the Church of England hierarchy.
J. M.
Beautiful cathedral, saw an amazing light show there, highly recommended
D. B.
Durham is a little city with a great cathedral. The cathedral was built between 1093 and 1133. It is only a 5 minutes walk from the city centre . The walk is mainly up hill and towards the end it is quite steep. You can get a bus up to the cathedral. The Cathedral Bus Service is a dedicated bus service over three routes linking the rail station, principal city centre bus stops, coach parks and the market place .
D. Z.
One of the iconic walks of the north around the riverbend.
Durham is a gem. The cathedral is an other example of Roman Church building. The lead windows are amazing. The atmosphere is quite unique.
The surroundings are equally beautiful.
Condensed history in a small town.
In autumn time the river is full of migrating salmons. Fun to watch. No
I. M.
A proper masterpiece of architecture. The cathedral is beautiful and well maintained on the outside but on the inside as well. It is also possible to buy a ticket to climb to the top of the tallest tower of the building (hundreds of stairs!) and enjoy the amazing view. Make sure not to miss it when visiting Durham.
G. B.
A wonderful place, an absolute must visit if your on Durham ... and it was used in Harry Potter
A. C.
Beautiful Cathedral , paid £5 donation but you paid at a till. Well worth it ,though. Cafe on site was good , food really nice.
J. P.
Fantastic cathedral to look around without having to pay to go inside. Lots of impressive features, particularly the cloisters which are great with the sun streaming through them. Big shop and cafe too.
S. F.
We visited for the moon exhibit and wow, what a place. Great one way system in place and so beautiful and peaceful. We all loved the moon, so a pity it's not staying for longer.
K. G.
The Cathedral is such an iconic place for Durham. It has such a magical, beautiful and astonishing architecture. It has been a movie set for films like Harry Potter and Avengers.
B.
Beautiful place. Well worth a visit. Had a small market on when I went which was great
B. J.
Had a chance to view this spectacular place on one of my work visits in Durham. So beautiful!
A. M.
The moon tour was fabulous, a daft price though, bit it was a gift from my daughter.
Will go in the daytime to look at the building another time. Looks stunning.
J. G.
Durham Cathedral is a magnificent part of a world heritage site, perched on a rocky outcrop with an ancient castle, now University College. It is nestled within a meander of the river Wear with footpaths that give access to the surrounding city.
The cathedral is ancient and a centre for the Christian tradition in the North East, connected with learning, both now and in the past and a strong sense of prayer and praise. There is always a warm welcome from the guides, a mark of the North East and this city in particular. Whether you are Christian or not there is much to discover here. Highly recommended.
R. I.
It was lovely to see the museum of the moon. Worth seeing for kids and adults alike. It was well organised and not overcrowded which is a bonus.
M. B.
Wonderful Norman building over 900 years old. Built overlooking the river. The central tower can be ascended by a spiral staircase with, reputively 365 steps. It is magnificent and too much to write here. Go and visit and leave a donation as it costs a fortune to preserve. Guides are there to give you a tour and tell you it's history.
M. M.
Durham is lovely and the Cathedral is beautiful. Visited for an art installation of the moon, which was really good and well worth paying to go on the night. I'm always worried about bursting into flames any time I enter a religious building though 😂🔥🤘
c. p.
Beautiful building and surrounds. We were greeted by friendly knowledgeable guides who gave us some history about the place. Lovely cafe and gift shop was a bonus. Hop on bus took us there and returned us to station.
K. W.
Always go to the cathedral at least 3 times a year. I took my daughter to see the moon installation and she wasnt disappointed its fantastic.
P. d.
Brilliant place to visit and gaze in awe at the fantastic architectural splendour within, and out.
S. D.
A beautiful building perched on the rocky crag that is Durham. So much history exists within its walls, it is wonderful. The guides are excellent and a guided tour is recommended.
L. C.
A magnificent building full of history.
It always looks spectacular no matter what time of day it is. It looks even better when the Lumiere festival is on!
R. J.
Last minute decision by us to visit here and it was a good idea. We loved it, such an impressive place, even not being religious I was still in awe looking around it. Admission was a £3 donation, but you had to pay extra if you wanted to see the exhibition upstairs.
A. J.
Such a beautiful place to visit. I loved tje history and the 'feel' of the building.
D. B.
Very nice place to visit had a great time
A. W.
A MUST visitors attraction! Holds the tombs of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, Saint Bede' and many others. The architecture is stunningly breathtaking.
It really does make you rekindle your religion and as it costs £150,000 per week to maintain, you can donate £3.00 or more if affordable to help towards the upkeep.
Out of all the churches and cathedrals I have visited, this is the best - the Norman pillars are unique and the cathedral was used in the films Elizabeth and Elizabeth The Golden Age.
Really, you must visit Durham Cathedral and Saint Cuthberts tomb makes your inner spirit come forward and you can actually feel quite emotional.
A. S.
A magnificent building & fantastic architecture. Bit of a walk up from the town market square but a pleasant walk, but there is a bus that goes up to the cathedral. Well worth a visit
M. R.
Okay, full disclosure. I used to be a chorister here back in the early 1990's so my experiences of this great and historic building are hugely biased in favour of the Cathedral.
For those who are looking to take photos, for a small charge (I think I paid £10) you're allowed to come in and take as many as you would like at least twice a year. I would recommend checking the Cathedral website for information - piece of advice, get there early if you wish to take a photo of the rose window from down the nave, the Walton family would have less people queuing for a shot.
When the choir are practising in preparation for Evensong during the week, it's normal for tourists to be gently ushered out in lieu of the closing time, or to make way for the service. If you want to hear the choir sing, then you have a couple of options. 1.attend a service (shock, I know) 2. buy a CD from the cathedral shop
If you can donate, or buy something then please do. From memory, I think the whole place costs around £50,000 per week to run in lighting and heating.
R. P.
Stunning Norman Cathedral with beautiful stained glass windows. Fantastic views from the tower roof. Cafe and exhibitions of treasures and history.
J. C.
Beautiful cathedral with lots of guides, distinguished by purple cloaks. The cathedral houses the remains of the Venerable Bede and St Cuthbert. Rather cold in the winter.
There is a comprehensive shop together with a restaurant and toilets.
j. h.
Was a lovely mystical experience.will definitely go again atmosphere was nice.and didnt wait long in the queue they were very organised
A. M. H.
Lovely socially distant walk around this historic building. Just beautiful.
A. D.
Amazing place, been many times. Spectacularly beautiful inside.
Visited recently for the museum of the moon event, highly recommend!
J. H.
Enjoyed a really good look around, very good access and cafe and toilets. Interesting and informative. Also enjoyed looking around the town hall which had an open day and opened up old rooms from the past, looked around indoor Market and had a decent lunch upstairs in cafe which was clean and pleasent friendly staff.
S. A.
Beautifully built Cathedral - Lovely glass painting. It is one among the World heritage site. It's a must to visit this Catheral. Historical Building.
K. d. c.
A very beautiful significant building, a short walk from city centre of durham.
M. G.
Beautiful cathedral. Free entry but we made a donation.
D. W.
Such a stunning place so much to see and do
S. L.
Lovely cathedral, well worth a visit
J. M.
This had been my third visit to cathedral I enjoy visiting old buildings
S. L.
Absolutely beautiful cathedral. The stained glass was very dirty which was a shame. A place to visit
J. J.
Beautiful Cathedral and still giving sermons and playing music. Steeped in history... amazing.
D. L.
A wonderful Medieval Catherdral and Castle. A place that goes back to Saxon days and before. You feel history when you step inside. Covid safe, defo a place to get out and see in these troubled times.
G. S.
Big impressive building. Requested donation but no fixed price to visit. Information boards linking to local history and the cathedrals place in it. Option to walk up 300 orcso steps for view from top of tower £5.50. Good views, well organised entry timed so didnt meet too many people coming down slightly narrow spiral staircase. Felt a bit wary on top but still enjoyed the views.
G. D.
Built between 1093 and 1133 ad. This Norman cathedral is absolutely stunning. The Venerable Bede is in the galilee chapel. Stunning views from the top.
B. T.
Recommend taking the guided tour as the guides are very good and point out things you would most likely miss if you just wandered round. We also paid to go up the tower which on a fine day gave us excellent views over the surrounding area. There is an exhibition "Open Treasures" which was money well spent. Needless to say we spent most of the day inside which was about six hours. The cafe was good for a rest break, also has good toilets.
When you arrive try to approach from the river footpath and walk up to the cathedral. The river walk itself around the meander that encloses the city is worth doing.
L. B.
Very nice,Lumiere used the cathedral to its full potential, the display was excellent. The grounds and cloisters were exciting with all the fire sculptures. Must visit again in normal view time.
k. s.
What a fantastic place. Truly impressive. So glad I didn't miss seeing this. Recommends £5 donation which didn't seem too much.
M. H.
Absolutely Spectacular
M.
What a cathedral very old and unique, well maintained in one of the most beautiful settings
C. P.
Stunning and there is still a lot to see . The staff are friendly and polite and there’s a lovely cafe too . There is a recommended donation of £5 which feels totally justifiable
S. H.
Going down hill in my opinion. the entrance through the chapel reduces the experience. the welcoming committee is a put off. i cant help but let these things put me off a great building.
D. N.
A beautiful place with some stunning architecture,a lovely walk up the castle side(quite a steep walk) Some of the cathedral is out of bounds due to Covid which is a shame but nonetheless still worth it,plenty of grassed area outside to sit and ponder things before the walk back down through the narrow streets of Durham which are lined with some beautiful shops and properties to also look at, will definitely be returning in future. FYI the park and ride is a must,no hassle and cheap to use.
J. B.
Beautiful, well preserved, and nice mix between more modern and historical. Also, I learnt that parts of Harry Potter were filmed there.
P. C.
Lovely cathedral but needs some sorting out. Eas a bit messy on this visit and very cluttered. Beautiful building and nice coffee shop
J. T.
Durham’s Cathedral is a beautiful construction and a landmark in Durham. It is right in front of Durham’s Castle and is sorrounded by a little cementery.
It is free to enter the Cathedral, they only ask you for a small donation for maintenance.
Durham’s Cathedral is a must-see if you are a Harry Potter fan. Inside you can see the film location they used for the movies. It is instantly recognizable
J. S.
Delightful visit to a fascinating place. Tour very informative and well worth taking.
M. R.
Really good visit.. wow what a place ..
great helpful staff including volunteers but a big thanks to Stephen the cathedral’s electrician for his help down from the tower Friday was really interesting chatting to him..
If your thinking of going don’t hesitate and please make a donation these places are our heritage..
Mike & Jo
D. F.
Such a peaceful place and the architecture is totally amazing for it being over 1000 years old best thing about it it free you everyone but it nice to leave a donation whatever you can afford
K. L.
Beautifully kept .. Norman style architecture with an eerie vibe. Stunning building that, if on Durham, it's a must see.
H. A.
Nice & beautiful big cathedral, you can feel the history. I liked the eagle statue where appeared on Harry Potter movie.
M. F.
View from the Cloisters at the Cathedral. We fell into conversation with one of the Cathedral Chaplains and learned more about the thousand year old masonry and designs of the interior and the life and times of St Cuthbert, in whose name the Normans built the place. Lots of stained glass and history to navigate and lots of help on hand to explain.
M. B.
Wonderful Cathedral with brilliant architecture and atmosphere. Take a tour or participate in the even song. For the fitter of you, it's well worth climbing the 325 steps to the top of the tower for breathtaking views of Durham town and beyond.
A. M.
Big cathedral they built them big years ago and built to last although there is renovating now going on still not bad after a 1000 years beautiful inside and nice stained glass windows
s. l.
Lovely cathedral woth the pilgrimage sites of St Cuthbert and Bede. Nice atmosphere. Door knocker worth the trip alone. Great walk nearby.
B. F.
Not on par with Bath, although Bath is much younger One good point to mention,is Durham are keeping their pews, unlike Bath, who for some weird reason, think it's the way to go.
That all said, Durham,is impressive but dull. If I said I was disappointed, you'd be wrong. It was different and as such, would visit again.
The windows were nice but needed love and many bottles of Windowlene, They lacked lustre when they could have been amazing . I recall the windows in Chester Cathedral, which were breath takingly beautiful,as the light shone through them
I did enjoy the lovely informative staff at Durham, many thanks to those lovely volunteers
The bus from the market square ,40 ,40A take you right to the door almost, then can take you back right to the coach park
It is worth seeing and should always be on your to do list, and they only ask for a donation of £3.. Everylittle helps as they say.
N. B.
Love going to the Cathedral. I lit a candle and watched the bells being rung. Can't hear it inside but as we left we could.
G. M.
It's a giant cathedral. The best part was the Lego cathedral. Impressive artwork. I'm not a big fan of the church asking for money and this cathedral has a set up at the entrance where you are encouraged to donate. I think there should be more freedom to wonder. They state it costs £150,000 to run the cathedral each week...
M. S.
A lovely peaceful spot, full of history. The food in the undercroft is also good with pleasent staff.
J. R.
Amazing building very peaceful last time visited you could see the river shame you can not now .
This didn’t spoil it lovely visit didn’t go inside but so much to see outside 💎🇬🇧
T. T.
Really enjoyed our tour around the cathedral. Fantastic stain glass windows. So much to see.
C. F.
Such an amazing cathedral fire a teeny tiny city! Beautiful
G. M.
Great place to visit but get there early.
A. M.
Visiting Durham Cathedral is like stepping back in time. I've lost count how many times I've visited there, and it's always a beautiful experience. The entrance itself is stunning as it's surrounded by rich history and beautiful architecture. Inside it is so peaceful, so silent; there's a real ethereal element to it. Plus, as a Harry Potter fan it's always great to see recognisable locations! Well worth a visit if you like harmony, architecture, history, and Harry Potter!
Z. B.
Visited the cathedral for the Durham illuminations. Was pleasantly surprised as to how well the whole display was put together and managed. Both the exterior and interior of the cathedral are beautiful. A peaceful yet wonderful environment inside and out.
J. T.
Fantastic architecture and history such a pleasure to explore this beautiful peace of our history . Enjoyed a drink sat at a table in the cloister it's was wonderful
R. J.
Absolutely beautiful building and well worth a visit. If you appreciate stunning architecture then you won't be disappointed.
S.
A must for all to visit.
T. S.
We completed our durham walk round the periphery of County Durham
E.
Fantastic Cathedral with spectacular views over Durham City. The fact this was built without modern day machinery and equipment is quite hard to believe.
C. E.
Such a lovely building. Tranquil and relaxing place. Staff are friendly and helpful. The café is great inside.
M. K.
Loved it. Beautiful normal cathedral. Full of history. Well worth a visit
C. V.
A beautiful medieval city with Cathedral and Castle all easily accessible. Very clean and well kept city with great choice of eating houses too! Just lovely!
M. C.
Great place to visit. A lot of historic information. The church is in beautiful grounds.
Z. T.
Massive structure. Great example of architectural masterpiece. A bit heavy but inside you can easily play golf.I'm impressed. Worth having a good look.
M. S.
Amazing place liked the tearoom such a lovely space
Shame about the broken lift for the tearoom my mother had to walk with a zimmer down the steps
Also the lack of recycling bins in tearoom and throughout the building there is none terrible so please more recycling and fix the lift thank you
R. R.
Lovely place to leisurely walk about and soak in the history. Have been here quite a few times. Best times have been when it is sunny and during a weekend. The streets are lively. It does get a bit overcrowded when events are on (such as the Lumiere). Photographing is not allowed inside.
a. a.
The Beautiful gothic Cathedral the stained glass the the gaint columns the Astrological clock and helpful guides they narrate the history of this Awesome Cathedral
k.
Queen by candlelight, what an experience in a fantastic place
A. A.
It was very interesting place and from it can we know the history of the kingdom of England . Very kindness people and helpfulness . I like Durham city .
D. L.
I've been visiting this monumental building since I was a small child. I now have mobility problems and did not think it would be able to gain access to the Cathedral anymore. However, signing up to the Durham Shopmobility scheme to hire a scooter enabled me to visit one of my favourite places once again.
The staff and volunteers at the Cathedral were fantastic, they gave me info on the only area I would not be able access via the scooter, there was only the tomb of St Cuthbert which was not fully accessible but I was shown where to park my scooter and could use walking aids to gain further access.
Overall I have visited the Cathedral twice since November 2021 when the Moon display was showing and then this latest visit. I am so pleased that despite my mobility issues I can now still gain access to one of my favourite places to visit.
P. F.
Nearly a thousand years old and impressive as ever. The staff is really nice and helpful
j. f.
Was a truly wonderful day, the Cathedral and history outstanding. Was happy to donate money. 💐👍
T. R.
A must visit if in Durham. It's well worth the £5 charge to climb to see the beauty of the City
T. F.
Fantastic cathedral, free to enter but you can leave a donation at the door, we'll worth a good donation.
C. C.
A very impressive place, full of history. And it's free (though donations are welcomed)
F.
Driving to the cathedral is quite awkward as you drive through a boulevard full of people.
The building itself is magnificent. It's huge and really makes you wonder how did they built it...
Also they shoot Harry Potter scenes in the gardens.
C. L.
When asked what is my favourite building my answer is Durham Cathedral. It's architecture is majestic, distinctively gothic & very beautiful. No modern building can compare & it is so deserving of it's World Heritage title. It is absorbed in history in local history that extends to Lindisfarne (Holy Island) in Northumberland where St. Cuthbert's body was carried by the monks when the vikings invaded the island across the North East looking for a suitable site to build a church worthy of St. Cuthbert's importance to Christianity. They came to Durham & with a moat as well they decided this was the place. First there was the 'white church', a wooden building then came the cathedral but no-one knows where the white once stood. Visitors can take steps up the tower that commands fantastic views especially on a clear day. There are the cloisters, library, chapel, the undercroft cafè & a large gift shop. There are statues dedicated to coal mining & the people who lost their lives down the pit. Beautiful stained glass windows in particular the 'Rose Window' that looks down on the inner cathedral - a must when you visit. There are also the grounds to see & walk ways from the cathedral down to river bank along the River Wear where you'll other structures to visit & bridges to walk upon. For me Durham Cathedral is like no other so why don't you come to it to see. Unfortunately for this review I don't have actual photo's of the front of the cathedral only ones inside so please check online. Thank you.
W. A.
Great place well looked after, a good place to visit, it's free but you can leave a donation if you wish, there are some paid access sections, also has a cafe.
M. A.
Absolutely lovely cathedral with loads of very interesting history. Recommend a tour.
m. w.
Typical grand cathedral ; useful to link with a previous trip to Lindisfarne that tells the tale of saint cuthbert, who was moved from the island to Durham. Free admission
A. S.
Beautiful place , daughter was singing In the choir ,
R. M.
Amazing place, the architecture is superb inside and out. We went in the evening and the way it was lit was beautiful. Definitely one to visit if you are in Durham
G. T.
Great place to visit whenever you're in the area.
K. A.
Incredible cathedral. All staff were very helpful. Could spend a whole day there.
S. K.
Nice Cathedral, but couldn't walk on the inside to explore more as had my loyal friend with me (Coco, my loyal dog).
R. S.
Stunning local attraction! So much to learn and see. Great for all ages!
G. W.
My first visit and what a wonderful place with friendly and helpful staff. The architecture is incredible
I. B.
Stunning views from the cathedral Tower worth the 650 stairs (325 up and then 325down)
J. F.
A must-see building for any visitor to the North East - without labouring the obvious, can be personally affecting standing inside taking in the magnitude of the space and the solemnity of its purpose.
Don’t forget to go beyond the main Cathedral sanctuary into what I believe were the monks cloisters - beautiful quadrangle to read in and gardens/quiet streets beyond.
W. S.
Beautiful Historic building . lots to see . also has a gift shop / Cafe & toilets & baby change facilities .
G. N.
Stunningly beautiful in it's simplicity and sheer size, probably the best cathedral in Europe.
R. M.
A medieval maaterplace - At cutherberts cross, the tomb of the Venerable Bede , cloisters pillers and vaulted ceilings. This is a stunning cathedral .
L. B.
Beautiful place to visit, loved reading up on the history, there isn't an admission charge but they do ask if you can try donate anything, and rightly so, absolutely beautiful visit
a. k.
one of the most peaceful places in Durham, you should definitely visit once for its historical significance and also because alot of Harry potter and a bit of avengers was shot here. Also, if you're a student studying in the university, you get to have your matriculation and congregation here in the cathedral.
D. K.
In my opinion the best cathedral in Great Britain. The true monument of God and the church of England.
C. W.
World class cathedral you must see when you are in the area. The guides were very nice and helpful.
