Reviews of Prebends Bridge
A. L.
A gorgeous bridge over River Wear that cuts turns the town into an island. If you walk across the main bridge in Durham, you can walk around early marked paths all the way around the outer edges of the island. Lovely vistas of the Durham Cathedral and Castle as well as Prebends Bridge. Definitely recommend the walk for some soul recharging or just some good insta-worthy photos!
D. H.
Nice bridge connecting the far castle end of the town with some of the wooded hills outside the bend of the river. Great views. Great for a walk making a loop along the river banks
A. K.
The trails along both side of the River Wear are a great opportunity for lovely walks in Durham. One of the highlights is of course Prebends’ Bridge. Even if you are just passing through the town and don’t have too much time to walk around, this is a must have view together with the cathedral.

Lovely bridge in durham city centre, just at the top of the path I’d the old cottage which is lovely, I’m selling prints including free postage if you’d like one
E. S.
If you ever get to Durham take the steps down from the shops next to the mobile shop and walk along the river banknto the bridge. You can cross over the top or go under and get some great photos. Try going when the river is calm so you get the mirror effect

I have walked over Prebends Bridge as a local person for over 50 years. Also as a Grey College , Durham University student. Unparalleled views of the River Wear from here and all the wildlife it supports. Nothing better than to sum up with Sir Walter Scott's evocative words carved into the stonework of the bridge itself .....
GREY TOWERS OF DURHAM
HOW WELL I LOVE THY MIXED AND MASSIVE PILES ( Of stone ! )
HALF CHURCH OF ENGLAND
HALF CASTLE ' GAINST THE SCOT
AND LONG TO ROAM THESE VENERABLE AISLES
WITH RECORDS STORED OF DEEDS LONG SINCE FORGOT.
Or something very similar !. A lovely piece of poetry.
ELLIS COXON.

This is a beautiful bridge and great for just standing and watching the river go by. There are also many interesting features on and around the bridge that add to the interest here. The Riverside walk leads to this bridge. Try that too.
P. T.
Great engineering structure in a picturesque setting. Great part of the riverside walk.
D. H.
Lovely walks on both sides of the river with Plenty to see and going on both on the river and wooded banks. Great views over Durham cathedral from prebend bridge area , good access onto the town past the cathedral

It's a great old big stone bridge - and it has this cool poem by sir Walter Scott.
Grey towers of Durham! ...
Yet well I love thy mix'd and massive piles,
Half church of God, half castle ‘gainst the Scot,
And long to roam these venerable aisles,
With records stored of deeds long since forgot.

Good photo spot ,Sunday boat day

Wonder views over the Wear of Framwellgate Bridge, Durham Cathedral and the Old Mill House.

One of the most beautiful spots in Durham: you'd never know you were in the middle of town. Lovely views of the cathedral, lots of wildlife, verdant and just relaxing. Everytime we're here we say to each other "aren't we lucky to be living in Durham!"
M. V.
Matchless bridge over the Wear - spend some time marvelling that you’re in the middle of a city, when it looks like you’re in a forest

Lovely stone bridge with views of the cathedral.
A. W.
Its an old bridge ? Good walk from the city. Not much more to say.
L. D.
Good bridge with a great view, definitely worth a detour, arguably in the top 5 best views of Durham

It's beautiful. The whole riverside area in Durham is wonderful, and very much at the heart of the city. The only negative for the bridge comes in the form of large wire fencing panels at the ends of the bridge covering the stone bollards which managed for centuries to protect people from falling in the river, but which must be deemed insufficient protection now. They may be necessary, but they do spoil the appearance.
A. K.
There are a few bridges on Durham, but after careful consideration this bridge is my favourite. Journeying across a river has never given more of a resplendent view than Prebends Bridge does.
F. E.
A nice bridge so you can cross the river. Near the fulling mill where lots of people take photos of cathedral on hill above
I. P.
Always a welcoming sight and nice area to walk around if the weather allows it. Definitely preferable to go in the summer or on a sunny day as the water and whole ambiance is nicer. Though in winter time, the river gains a considerable amount of speed which makes watching it more entertaining.
i. c.
One of the crossing points over the river to Durham but a foot bridge so quiet and with a good view along the river. In winter I would image you would get a decent view of the cathedral too.
N. B.
Beautiful tranquil riverside walks with views of Durham Cathedral on high! Haunting glimpses of Prebends Bridge through the foliage as you approach. ... Magical.
A. N.
My husband proposed to me here. Such a beautiful spot ❤️
B. P.
Full of history, beautiful bridge and cracking views. Shame about the metal fencing that's just been placed on either ends for the last couple of years in lieu of actually fixing some structural defect.
G. L. C.

Going to Durham?take a few minutes out of your day and walk along the river Weir under the cathedral and castle walls, absolutely beautiful.stand on framwellgate bridge looking up river with the cathedral on you left ,then notice the steps on each side of the bridge that lead down to the river side.down you go!walk up to the Weir ,over prebends bridge and return to framwellgate bridge-beautifull,a very easy walk about 20 mins.

Beautiful views of cathedraln river..shame its taken several years to repair the bridge ...wooden struts still in place!...
A. L.
It's a bridge so not much to tell - some interesting history about it's creation (built after the Great Flood in the 1700s washed away the Medieval bridge).
N. A.
