Reviews of Dr Neil's Garden

I could have stay here forever. It is heaven on earth. So beautiful and peaceful. And the tearoom is also nice to visit. The lady who is working there is so lovely. I really recommend this place!
N. F.
A hidden gem: tiny garden at the bottom of Arthur’s seat with a gorgeous view of the water. Definitely worth a visit! It’s free to enter.
When we were there was also a beautiful art exhibition that we visited. A great spot!
P. R. R.
Lovely decorated garden close to the hills, so you can combine visiting them in one shot. Going there by bus is super easy and I loved the option to donate something by tapping - that is modern 🙌🍀
Great opportunity to chill and enjoy good gardening
D. D.
Hidden oasis of calm. Well worth a visit. A nice short walk around a well laid out garden. Lovel views over Duddingston Loch. Note there are steep steps.
B. W.
Fabulous place, relaxing, quiet! We could hear the birds and wind, the water. It was indeed one of the most peaceful places I've ever been to!
D. m. J.
A former private garden opened to the public. The whole complex looks intimate and very different than if a garden architect had designed it. Absolutely worth seeing.
T. G.
This garden is just gorgeous . There are several places to sit to relax, draw, etc. I loved the variety of plants and flowers. Definitely stop by here even if briefly
В. Н. С.
It’s nice and calm place. Free to visit. Plenty of branches to sit and enjoy the life. Less maintained then it deserves
J. H.
Absolutely stunning! An incredible little hidden gem! So many stunning views and lovely little footpaths to enjoy and wander about. Super peaceful ambiance and gorgeous view of the Loch
C. C.
It's an amazing place, like a paradise is a wonderful place to have a walk and discover all the nice places into the gardens. The people who work in the garden to maintain it did an spectacular hard job to keep this like is it right now. Thank you so much to all of them for make possible that spectacular place!
a. i.
Really nice garden and breathtaking view towards Duddington Loch.
D. S.
Magnificent peaceful garden, wonderful views across Duddingston Loch and Arthur's Seat. Free entry, donations welcome.
Please also visit the community garden 'Jock Tamson's Garden next door; both are worthy of some of your time
B. M.
A beautiful, peaceful garden. Seats dotted around where you can look at the loch, the birds swimming on it, the trees and flowers.
We visited the cafe at Duddingston Kirk too. Delicious filled rolls and home baking, staffed by lovely volunteers. Open April to Mid-October this year.
K. R.
Very nice place to have a walk around the garden or if you just want to sit and relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. Limited free parking spaces available.
There is also a small cafe serving cakes, juices, teas and coffees.
Gardening area is full of Vegs, fruits and herbs. Some beautiful roses and other flowers enhance the beauty of this garden.
D. P.
I call this garden ‘a secret garden’. It is a little beautiful garden hidden in a city centre(quite centre), can be quiet and can be busy sometimes, not usually still quiet and nice to walk around. It is built among the hill, so there’re up and down to walk, not suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. Getting into the garden, there’s an allotment and a church beside each other’s, very nice for family to go and for quiet time if someone needs it.
R. H.
With an almost secret entrance it has a lovely little cafe and toilet area and is so peaceful and unique set away here owned by the local church. Many memories of times with friends including my late father. Worked at hard to keep beaut and different each time I go because of the different seasons and flowering times.
J. A.
We enjoy visiting the garden and Jock Tamson's Garden next door throughout the year. There's always so much colour and interest and today we noticed the new signboards and benches, such a wonderful place
A. H.
A tranquil green oasis set below Holyrood Park and overlooking Duddingston Loch. The beautiful terraced garden tended by a loving band of volunteers features a host of attractive and interesting plants, flowers, shrubs and trees. With many winding paths for you to explore it may not be suitable for those with difficulty walking but there are plenty of seating areas where you can stop and admire the views, watch waterfowl on the loch and listen to the birds in the trees. It is an ideal place to relax and unwind from the city and take in the scent of pine and other botanicals.
The on-site cafe known as the Garden Room offers hot and cold drinks, delicious home baked cakes and other confectionery. There is a large lawn outside with plenty of benches for sitting or alternatively there are tables and chairs inside the cosy tea room
P. S.
Stunning hidden gem in Edinburgh. Layers of beautiful plants, flowers, and trees. Lots of seating to relax and take in the smells and views over Duddingston Loch.
F.
Nice simple garden, not so much to see but still kinda worth it. Be careful, at the bottom of the garden your shoes can get wet, watch your steps. You can leave some donations if you feel like it.
G. G.
Such a beautiful place to visit on a nice day! Went and fed the swans, geese and ducks. Made friends with a couple of the geese. Hand fed them and they were pecking at our shoes - v cute. It's a nice place to explore. There was a graveyard not too far away that had great views. Was a really nice day out!
K. B.
What can I say, so many hidden gems within Dr Neil’s Garden, found it by chance when looking at a satellite view around Holyrood Park planning a run. Unfortunately the Garden Cafe was closed when I visited so I didn’t get to try their coffee and cakes but it was such a tranquil visit and right on the edge of the Loch. Great place for meditation and contemplation, definitely a hidden gem in Edinburgh!
V. M.
Quiet and lovely gardens located away from the beaten path. It takes some time understanding where the entrance is but is definitely a hidden gem worth looking for!
P. C. S.
This is a beautiful and restful spot on the shore of Duddingston Loch. There are views over the water, plants and trees, birds - especially jackdaws - and benches to sit on and relax.
A. R.
Beautifully designed gardens. Peaceful and relaxing. One of Edinburgh's hidden gems
C. H.
The most beautiful retreat, and a fine example to us all how to treat the planet earth. The Neils were extraordinary people.
D. P.
One secret garden you want to keep away from the tourist tracks. Such a magical place to wander around and relax.
C.
What a beautiful and hidden treat of Edinburgh. I recommend climbing Arthur's Seat before heading to this great place.
D. L.
Absolutely Beautiful..tranquil interesting planting. Organic. Perfect Peace with the backdrop of Duddingston Loch. Also lovely little tea Room.
R. K.
The location of this garden is great. However, when we visited, seemed like a lot of construction or such was taking place, with goods outside. It can be maintained better to facilitate walking near the water body and enjoy its beauty 😀
N. K.
Yesterday my husband and I discovered this hidden gem (I know I am embarrassed didn't discover earlier). As a family we love Arthur's seat but this spectacular hidden treasure is breathtaking. Put the pictures on social media and the whole family just loved it. So peaceful and gorgeous.
K. A.
It is such a small garden but the best place to just sit and contemplate.
C. F.
Finally got to Dr Neil's Garden having been told about it several years ago. It has suffered a little in the hot summer we are having so not at its best, but still worth visiting and I enjoyed seeing it at last.
I. P.
Beautiful and hidden place, go through the black gate and follow the signs to Dr Neil's garden
t. l.
Excellent garden and a delight to walk around. Not suitable for people with walking difficulty.
T. P.
A peaceful garden to spend your time
D. W.
Situated in the grounds of the manse for Duddingston Kirk. A wonderful garden with plenty of seats to spend a tranquil moment overlooking Duddingston Loch! There is a small cafe and a car park beside the entrance. Check the Internet for opening times!
H. R.
Lovely place for a wander. Quite steep in places. Well worth the visit. Beside Duddingston Loch. There is a cafe where you can sit in or outside in the gardens(not open all year)
N. M. (. M.
Beautiful garden and nicely hidden so that not many people know about it!
E. S.
Nice, calm place for walking wondering
E. M.
A lovely hidden gem
A. K.
Very nice garden, hidden away in the middle of Edinburgh. There is a little pond and stream in the middle of the garden and plenty of benches to relax and enjoy a bit of silence away from the crowds.
K. S.
I usually love this place and wanted to show it to my mum visiting, it says open until 5pm we got there at 4.20pm and it was shut. Very disappointed especially given the journey we had to take to get there (and we couldn't go earlier either).
Edit to say that we still had a lovely time going round Jock Tamson garden, the kirkyard and the loch.
S. L.
Beautiful view and a relaxing environment
A.
Wonderful variety of plants, a wee paradise near the city, tranquil and inspirational.
H. B.
Magnificent garden and at this time of year at its glorious best. I'm no plant expert but this garden seemed to have every conceivable variety. I just loved the the small windy footpaths that led you to even more delights. A true hidden delight of Edinburgh
B. G.
One of the memorable place to visit. There are several types of interesting plants, trees with a fantastic view of lake. You should definitely visit there and try cookies with earl grey tea at the nearby cafe. People are so nice as well as the cafe.
C. M.

C.
A wonderful and peaceful place to visit on a sunny day.
J. L.
Really like this garden, really nice for a walk and it's quiet
J. T.
A wonderful place! Went around this morning off Queen's dr, was directed by a kindly gentleman through a church door for the entrance. It was early so I had the garden all to myself. What a wonderful place! Indeed it is more than a garden. Unfortunately the cafe was not open but still a hidden gem, highly recommended!
G. L.
A great place to get away and relax, like a rural country park, induce Edinburgh. Try the church cafe for a cup of tea.
L. B.
Beautiful garden with views to the Duddingston Lake. A real treasure hidden enough it's never really busy, a good place to hide from the city and soak up the pine scent & the athmoshpere.
F. N.
Beautiful flower garden. Hidden gem within the city. Stunning scenery
L. H.
Beautiful little tranquil spot. We went on a day where it was 23 degrees and town was packed but in the garden we were the only people in the garden. Absolutely beautiful
D.
Super hidden away but well worth finding.
D. B.
A very calming, tranquil place to sit, ponder, distress and think. Fantastic views across Duddingston Loch.
N. Z.
A peaceful and hidden beautiful garden!
A. L. C.
Scottish Wildlife Trust's small piece of woodland on the opposite side of Duddingston Loch to the Dr Neils' garden. Magnificent sycamore shown here.
R.
Beautiful little garden and it's very peaceful here. Nice place to sit and relax or even draw/paint some of the nature. I love going for walks around this garden and taking family members here. It's definitely worth a visit!
K. M.
Beautiful gardens within Holyrood Park with views of Arthur Seat and Duddingston Loch. Lots of relaxing spaces and the volunteers that run the gardens and cafe are fantastic. It's a beautiful backdrop for photographs and we had wedding photographs taken there which you can book for a small fee.
A. L. G.
Secret garden near the busy Hollyrood park. Difficult to find the main black gate with no sign but once passed through, the path is easy to get
G. R.
A very interesting place to visit. It is hard to believe that it is within the City of Edinburgh. A quiet and reflective place to wander round. It is run by volunteers. There is a café there but at the time of our visit it was closed due to Covid-19 restrictions. You will not be disappointed if you make a visit - a hidden gem.
L. M. (.
Really beautiful garden but though it says 1.5 hours to get around you can absolutely get round it, even at a leisurely pace, in less than half an hour.
D. B. G.
Best place ever to rest and scape from the city
A. R.
Lovely little garden with nice story behind it too. I like to know the history of places and there's lots to learn here. You can buy some plants taken from the garden as well which is lovely. There's the loveliest little dog there too that comes to say hello.
I. W.
Attractive, small hillside garden. Lovely south facing views over the Loch with plenty of seating. Not great if you can't cope with slopes. If you visit on Wednesday to Sunday afternoons then there is a very pleasant cafe at the entrance. 42 bus is within 2 mins walk of the entrance.
S. V.
Very beautiful surroundings! Must visit.
G. D. G.
Absolutely ace. Want to go somewhere in the city where you can find some tranquility and respite from every day life? Look no further. You might even see the gardener's cute black terrier roaming around if you're lucky
A. F.
A quaint, peaceful and beautiful garden on the shore of Duddingston Loch.
Even has a wee coffee shop (with limited opening hours a few days a week).
Free parking is available.
Plants are for sale.
Plenty of seats.
Some rough paths and steps, but most of this precious wee gem is perfectly walkable.
E. W.
A lovely little hidden gem! If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, it's definitely worth the trip here. Even though I came in the winter, the garden was still a peaceful setting overlooking Duddingston Loch. I'm sure it must be absolutely gorgeous in the summer when everything is in bloom. I wish we had something like this where I live.
S. A.
Delightfully tranquil area at Duddingston, great for a walk to and from round the park and Arthur Seat taking in the views of the South towards the Blackford, Braid & Pentland Hills...
A. B.
Very relaxing, ideal for a little rest and a cup of tea after a hectic week.

Dr Neil’s Garden is one of the most remarkable gardens in Scotland today. Lying next to the twelfth-century Duddingston Kirk, where the lower slopes of Arthur’s Seat meet Duddingston Loch, this secluded garden is the result of the imagination, dedication and sheer hard work of Drs. Andrew and Nancy Neil. It has sometimes been called Edinburgh’s Secret Garden. Many people find it more than a mere garden, and – both before and since the garden was created – this spot has to many been a place of inspiration (artistic, literary, and spiritual), and for meditation and contemplation. We hope that you too may also take away lasting memories, and spread the word about this special place to others.
Drs Nancy and Andrew Neil were a husband and wife team of General Practitioners whose practice was in the Meadowbank area, on the north side of Arthur’s Seat. They were an energetic couple who loved to go to other parts of Europe on their summer holidays, towing a caravan through France, Spain and Greece, collecting plants and young trees.
In 1963 Andrew and Nancy began work on part of the Duddingston Glebe (church land) known as The Calves Field, and Dr Neil’s Garden was born. Though the ground had been used for grazing – for calves and geese, its steep slope and rocky surface made it unsuitable for growing crops, and thus so it had never previously been cultivated. The doctors liked to encourage their patients to assist in the Garden, thus allowing them to benefit from healthy outdoor activity and the tranquil setting beside the Loch.
The Garden has won a number of awards over the years and has featured in television programmes and many books and articles.
In 1997, Dr Neil’s Garden Trust was formed, in order to take over the running of the garden, and to safeguard its future. The Garden Trust is a registered charity.
Andrew and Nancy Neil both died in 2005. In 2012-2013 the Physic Garden was laid out to commemorate their lives as doctors and gardeners.
Dr Neil’s Garden is so much more than a garden. It is a friendly place that welcomes all to its peace and beauty and at the same time offers comradeship and training to volunteers. The Garden stimulates change through play, learning, the arts, healthy activity, and by addressing the special needs of people. It is open to all, free of charge 7 days a week. There are many expenses and we rely on donations to keep our gardener and pay expenses.
D. M. G.
This is a small garden compared to the other ones on edinburgh but nevertheless is as beautiful as any other. I would say that the size and the care of everyone who works in it makes it even more special. As some people would say, due to the place where it's located, the secret garden of edinburgh. Full of life and peace. It really leaves space to wonder physically and mentally. There is a maximum of 20 people right now because of the coronavirus and it's open only Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:00-14:00. Workers are lovely and will talk to you about the place with passion and interest
R. B.
Lovely secluded garden with a great range of plants and trees. Very peaceful and relaxing place to visit
L. L.
I got surrounded by swans while carrying some chips. I think they were doing a ritual.
R. B.
A quiet garden near the city centre with good views over Duddingston Loch in the Queen's Park. My visit was in October so there were not many flowers in bloom, but many shrubs were still evident. Free parking is available in the Duddingston Kirk church hall car park.
C. M.
Hidden behind Arthur's Seat, Dr Neils Garden is a beautiful and tranquil place to spend a sunny day. There's a small trail around the gardens, a huge variety of plants and herbs to discover and a lovely pond. There's lots of benches dotted around too, so it's easy to find somewhere to sit and enjoy the view!
N. F.
Beautiful gardens with a view out over Duddingston Loch. Small pond with a bridge and seating areas inside the gardens. Cafe at the top, and a visitor book at the gate. Some parts may not be suitable for pram or wheelchair users.
N. K.
Interesting, beautiful, well looked after and classy. Try the tea there after walking around
C. S.
Very nice and peaceful place to hang out!
F. S.
Breathtaking view
L. W.
Dr Neil's is one of Edinburgh's hidden gems. Beautiful, tranquil and a labour of love not far from the city centre. The cafe - run entirely by volunteers does a lovely slice of cake and is a relaxing space to have a cuppa and a chat. I love this place!
A. T.
This is not just a random place, it's secret garden and it's absolutely fantastic. It's been taking care of with great care, one lady told me that it was started by a marriage of doctors, who brought plants from all around the world. Definitely will be coming here more often. Loved it 😍😍😍
J. N.
Very beautiful, especially ducks and geese are very fun
K. G.
Total hidden gem. A sanctuary from the city. Lots of little nooks and crannies with benches to stop and take it all in. Lovely wee cafe too. Great for kids too. Feels like a secret from the world.
R. H.
This place is hard to find. To get in you have to either open the gate on main road or go into the Kirk and take a sharp left through a cafe. Once you actually work out how to get in its brilliant. Big, free and peaceful with loads of great nooks and crannies with seats all over. Best in summer but still has herbs that you can smell in other months. Some of the paths may be unsuitable for wheelchair users. Great free hideaway. When you comeer out go try the pub up the road called 'The sheep's heid', it's from the 14 century.
K. L.
Definitely worth visiting!!
S. B.
Lovely independent garden, plenty of parking. Lovely and peaceful. By a small loch.

Four stars as dr neill was not anywhere to be seen but his garden is nice

Hidden away just behind Duddingston Kirk lies Dr Neil's Garden, a beautifully, secluded garden that is perfect for a little afternoon stroll.
To enter, go through the gate called Manse House, turn right and cross diagonally over the patch of grass. There you enter into the garden, full of flowers, winding paths and seats to sit and stare out onto Duddingston loch. I definitely recommend you go in the spring when the colours in the garden are starting to come to life.
M. M.
One can say it's a hidden gem. If you want to relax and want a peaceful place then this is it. Awesome garden to sit and rejuvenate

(Translated) Nice park in Edinburgh. It has a lake and some short paths around it that can be walked. There is a lot of fauna and flora to admire. Various birds that live on the shores of the lake, we saw 4 swans, very beautiful.
Then you can walk around Arthur's Seat until you reach Holyrood Palace, it's a beautiful walk.

Luego se puede caminar rodeando el Arthur’s Seat hasta llegar al palacio de Holyrood, es una hermosa caminata.

(Translated) A quiet, peaceful place. The garden is not large, but several levels, between which there are narrow alleys. Lots of flowers and greenery. You can sit quietly on a bench overlooking the lake full of waterfowl. I highly recommend.

A nice place to relax if the weather cooperates. The view of the Duddingston "Loch" and "Arthur's Seat" is not found everywhere. A few benches invite you to linger. There is also a "nice" public toilet behind the southern gate.
