Reviews of Fruitmarket
K. L.
Half raw and half airy white, Fruitmarket is a contemporary art gallery regenerated from two adjoining former market buildings at the Old Town, adjacent to the Waverley Station.
I like the contrasting composition there. The extension on the west exposed all the raw materials of the original warehouse to form a dark and industrial space for both performance and exhibitions, while the existing wing on the east provides purely white space with natural light.
It is interesting to found the existing east wing had undergone a rework which concealed the wall openings on the upper floor and removed some fine architectural details including the staircase, both done in the 90’s. A lost of view and spatial quality for a more neutral white cube space which might serve its purpose better on the upper floor, and an improved layout on ground level.

Visited for a wreath making class with Narcissus Flower School. Had a nice coffee in the cafe which had a nice atmosphere, all staff were very friendly, the venue was really cool. Very handy that it's right beside the train station. Highly recommend Fruitmarket and the Narcissus classes.
G. L.
Opposite the City Gallery is this small gallery showing an exhibit of Daniel Silver. Staff were friendly. Is free to enter. Small area but well laid out. The artist wasn't for me but I enjoyed it all the same.

Obsessed with this place. Went for the first time and the cafe is glorious. Staff are terrific. Toilets are clean and well maintained.
Need to check out the rest of it and can’t wait to go back. Check it out!
T. F.
Very convenient location. Proper size for individual exhibition with rooms and halls in different sizes.
Polite and helpful staff.
Enclosed a good cafe with natural light and large windows for enjoy Edinburgh's city view outside.
C. G.
The building is rather austere with minimalist decor and some interesting books. The current exhibition is not my cup of tea and leaves a lot to be desired. If I was only reviewing the exhibition I would give it one star or perhaps a minus score.
L. T.
The most perfect cafe! Definitely the best in Edinburgh- all the things you want from a good cafe (light, airy, vibrant yet calm, fantastic coffee with all the art work in the froth, friendly) and my goodness the food!! This food is at least as good (and very possibly even better) than The Witchery, Tom Kitchin etc. Superlative fresh, flavourful, creative, delicious dishes. Unbelievably good! Would give 6 stars if possible ✨️
R. C.
Marvellous gallery with fantastic array of curated contemporary art. Very much recommend.
The cafe although in a great location, the staff make you feel like you're an inconvenience by being there. It put a negative tint on the experience.
I'm a regular visitor to the gallery but will not use the cafe again.
J. G.
Went there for a gig that was a collab with sneaky Pete's. Absolutely Legendary. Great venue. Non gendered clean loos. It was fantastic would definitely go again. Also the gift shop and cafe look great 👍
C. D.
Great and interesting exhibitions always. The cafe was good, quick service at reasonable prices. Try the salad with salmon and the book shop had an interesting and inclusive range of subjects.
P. K.
Visited with my partner over Valentines weekend and the two of us were hugely impressed with both the cafe and the exhibitions which had clearly been curated with a huge amount of passion and attention to detail. QR codes with audio files beside some pieces and a mix of video and interactive content like books opened to important pages and scattered throughout really show how these types of exhibits SHOULD be done. Cafe has a nice menu, the staff are lovely and the gallery shop is beautifully and thoughtfully stocked. My number one choice for anyone with a few hours to burn on a rainy day.
H. M.
Lovely airy modern space. The soup was delicious and the platter with hummus, bread and giant olives filled a hole.
M. S.
One of the best contemporary art galleries in Scotland. Great book shop and a bite at Cafe Milk is definitely worth a stop.

This city is the home of my childhood. Edinburgh for me has always been a place for the arts, a place for the unexpected, a place where performers, actors, comedians, and those seeking a creative path migrate to.
The fruitmarket has always offered me a stable diet of visual art, it's has seduced me, appalled me, shocked and mocked my integrity.
I have loved it, loathed it, spell bound by an avalanche of experiences. It is a place l never plan to be, but encounter as and when l turn up on its doorstep.
Whatever you are seeking, whatever preconceptions you have, l would suggest leave them outside and enter with an open mind.
However there is a sanctuary in the form of a cafe, a warm cup of tea and a welcome slice of cake, to consume as you ponder the experience you have encountered.
A. C.
Superb interactive experience for all the family.
M. M.
Lovely gallery! It has exhibition of contemporary artists. They are always very interesting and, in my opinion peculiar - in the sense that it's not the usual things you normally find in the more "mainstream" places. I recently went to the Lee Lozano exhibition and it was really interesting. There was a good selection. It was well thought out. It also present things such as her notebooks, which helped me understand her art better. The information provided for the art - leaflets, videos, etc. - were relevant and exhausting. They also have many interesting events, too, such as free tours of the exhibition, etc. It's a smaller place then I thought it would be, but I really enjoyed it.
I. O.
Great place for coffee, amazing cakes, great lunches and very friendly staff. Highly recommended. Fully accessible, though I have had trouble operating the automatic doors to get in, are they broken? Accessible facilities, lift to exhibitions, and all right next to Waverly Station Market Street entrance.
T.
Excellent exhibitions a large gallery art space, ground and upper floors. With coffee shop and excellent book shop to. Visit here it is worth it.
A.
Fascinating exhibition in a great space
S. B.
Bit busy with the Fringe, but worth the visit.
E. G.
Excellent book/gift shop and gallery space is large and well displayed. I like the videos from the artists in the education room, where they explain the work and processes.
R. L.
Really beautiful gallery in a great location. Fantastic, airy space. A must if you're into contemporary art.
Also worth mentioning the excellent cafe and small but superb shop. The staff in both are lovely.
D. M.
Very good service.
As soon as we were seated we had a glass of water delivered.
Nice coffee, and exceptional carrot cake!!
Would definitely recommend.
H. L.
Fabulous gallery, shop and cafe right in the heart of Edinburgh. Friendly staff, gallery free to visit, new space is perfect. We had food which was delicious and very reasonably priced. What's not to like.
f. c.
Such a great experience and service from all staff was excellent! Beautiful food in the cafe therefore many thanks to Eddie (Manager) for his attention to detail in overseeing needs were met throughout.
In particular a HUGE thanks to Finn who spent much time with us giving knowledge and background of the exhibition we viewed and to our delight the history of how the Fruit Gallery once was which made our afternoon even more special... Thank you Finn!
N. W.
The still recent and long in happening extensive refit works - the café space, w its various seating arrangements, equally inviting for individuals or groups - the menu offers choice but not too much - the bookshop one returns to again and again ...
J. K.
Excellent service, friendly and helpful staff. Delicious food, well prepared and beautifully presented. Made a great lunch location for my sister, brother and I to meet up. Highly recommend 😊
m. s.
Great food, service and a help to directions around the old town
D. T.
Nice relaxing place to visit staff were very helpful and friendly
J. R.
Nice food in pleasant surrounding and served by very friendly staff.
M. M.
A powerful show of ceramic sculpture.
Fine contemporary sculpture.
L. M.
Great breakfasts and very friendly staff! We loved it!
L. M.
Food is very good, service is friendly and fast. Highly recommended!
L. E.
Great cafe, great art, great combo
D. H.
Friendly café staff, two lovely galleries, free to enter but with opportunity to donate as a mark of appreciation. With a glass roof in the upper gallery there are terrific sound affects when the heavens open and dump the life-giving liquid. See video space to learn more about the artist's installation... excellent...Current exhibition.. upstairs and down well worth a visit...you'll love the speech bubbles.
L. D.
One of my favorite galleries in the city, always has interesting exhibits in what's seems to be a constantly evolving space.
This gallery is always peaceful and feels very personal to all who visit. Come if not just for the great cafe alone!
D. B.
Did you come for the cafe? Enter via the bookshop - that in itself adds pleasure to the experience. The heavy door - I think it must be made of metal - that leads in from the street is set in a recess so that the door itself is a right angles to the street. And it has a porthole in the door. Already I feel like this is going to be a good place. And big, big windows that stretch floor to ceiling. So contemporary - so privileged - so much better than drudge.
OK, you're in. Now you have a bookshop that sells 'thoughtful' - art books, criticism books, photography books. (Also sells notebooks and cards and little gifts) and there's an air of 'San Francisco easy' - nothing rushed.
Then the gallery - new exhibitions regularly - that spread over the ground floor and upstairs - and usually I don't go for them much. They often feel 'Give me fifty planks of wood and a ten pots of paint and some paper and I could do that.' But sometimes there's something.
And onwards to the cafe - I love the cafe. Just the right balance between easy and substantial - more than a cafe with cakes - whole meals - inventive - good regular choices - nice tables - those big windows that look out onto the City Art Centre opposite. Nice staff. A place to go back to again - become a somewhat regular. Love it.
R. F.
Nice small gallery with interesting exhibitions and a nice cafe
C. F.
The gallery is quite small which is the only reason I've deducted a point but they are knocking through next door apparenty so that will improve. Enjoyed the exhibit when we were there, nice to see something a little more modern than other galleries.
G. R.
Always a great place to dip into for arty gifts, cards, books and magazines. Good coffee shop, always busy. The gallery space is very flexible, always worth taking the time to suss out what's on.
A. C.
Good coffee and tea, with excellent scrambled eggs on their breakfast menu. You've also got the gallery to hand, should you want a little culture. The only drawback of the café is that, being so close to the station, it can quickly fill up at the busiest times of day.
P. R.
Small gallery with very interesting exhibitions and great talks and workshops. The café is run by Milk, a bit pricey, but well worth it. Especial mention to the shop: one of the best selections of arty and quirky books in Edinburgh. Great place to spend the morning before heading to the lovely "The Arches" full of new shops and cafes behind Waverley St.
O. O.
A real nice Gallery with a lovely Cafe Bar to visit in Edinburgh; a very relaxing atmosphere.
A. B.
I am by no means an art lover but enjoy the odd gallery now and then. The great thing about the fruitmarket gallery is you can pop in for half an hour on the way into town and see something a bit different. It is not huge, there is just two rooms one downstairs and one upstairs and a little shop and cafe. The shop is nice to browse and has interesting books and things. I have never been to the cafe, but may well next time I visit.
The exhibitions tend to be donation based, so you can put in some cash if you enjoy it (I like this as you aren't too committed before you go in).
Have a look at whats going on there, and pop along every few months as the exhibitions change!
p. w.
Nice space. Gallery was being reset when we were there but we enjoyed breakfast and browsing the gift shop
Z. P.
You could happily visit the Fruitmarket Gallery Cafe without ever stepping foot in their gallery space. (Not that I recommend you do of course as their free exhibits are some of the most innovative around.) But this bustling light, airy cafe has coffee and cake down to a fine art. They also serve sophisticated salads, hearty soups and shareable deli platters for those in need of a little more sustenance. My favourite treat? The mini rhubarb tarts are small masterpieces – perfect with a creamy Macchiato. And if you're meeting someone off the train (or having a quick cuppa with someone catching one), it's very near to the station too.
A. C.
One of the most convivial places to meet near Waverley Station. Decent coffee and nice breakfasts (I always have the scrambled eggs - which is lovely). You've also got the gallery on hand if art is your thing. The one drawback is that it quickly fills up towards lunchtime and during the afternoon.
J. F.
This lovely little cafe has a brilliant range of healthy food on the menu that is both yummy and filling. The service is quick, there are high chairs for the little'uns and not too expensive either. Great central location and a fantastic and quirky 'not typically high street' selection of books, gifts and art.
S. M.
Love Love Love the place. If there was a 6th star, I would have given it. The Fruitmarket Gallery is a mix of art gallery, bookshop and a cafe located behind the Waverley Train Station. The art exhibitions are always interesting (at the moment they have an exhibition about seas and you will find bottles filled with water from every sea of the world)
The cafe is lovely. I went for lunch and just for coffee. The food is good (world food style). Last time I had a gorgeous tagine!
I could stay in the book shop for ages looking at each books and albums. If you'd like an original gift, you can certainly find it there.
Overall a great great place! :)
g. m.
Always something of interest going on in the gallery. Large bright exhibition space upstairs after navigation the drawbridge stairs and the spacious ground floor space is tucked behind the well stocked shop and superb cafe/ restaurant. Fresh food served daily with a selection of savoury or equally delicious savoury options. Handy for whiling away an hour or two as you wait for a train at Waverley which is just around the corner or making a special visit to spend an afternoon absorbing whatever exhibition they have on and grabbing some refreshment while you're there.
S. d. M.
A nice alternative to the coffee shops in Waverley Station. The Fruitmarket Gallery is an interesting place. They have good coffee and cakes in the cafe, a wee gift shop and some art on display. It's just outside the "rear entrance" to Waverley Station, but if you're afraid to wander away from Princes Street, you'll never see it.
C.
Love the food and the art great place
E. F.
A great location to chill and wait as it’s near the train station — however, there were unnecessary strict staff in the art gallery. 3 out of 5.
S. C.
Highly interesting gallery, always thought provoking and innovative, excellent cafe, bright breezy a great place for lunch and to people watch
D. D.
Ambient atmosphere, briliant food&service 👌
Art is attractive and distinquish this place! Well done
d. d.
Best art gallery in Edinburgh. Painfully slow and indifferent service in the cafe though despite there being 4 staff on for about 20 customers - waited 20 minutes to be served a black coffee...
B. ..
The food is always very nice in the café and staff go above and beyond. The gallery is spacious and has interesting exhibits and a good selection of books in their book shop.
D. E.

r. e.
Brilliant, exciting gallery in the centre of town. Consistently fascinating exhibitions. It also has a lovely wee cafe - and the gallery shop is brilliant! Such cool stock! Massively recommended.
S. B.
Good coffee and cake in the café. Exhibition is interesting without being outstanding, at least in my opinion. Always worth a look if you have some time in between trains :-)
J. B.
Great coffee and friendly staff.
A. C.
Excellent shop, coffee and exhibition. Friendly staff and lovely building.
C. A.
Excellent place to go for lunch. Always busy so you may need to browse in the bookshop or gallery whilst you wait. Great hot meals, coffee and cakes. A little expensive but a nice treat.
P. U.
A cute small gallery, with a cafe and gift shop. Right across the road from the City Art Centre, so makes a good art day out as both galleries have free entry.
C. H.
Two floors of exhibition, all from one artist at a time. Regular rotations of every exhibit means theres always something new to go and see. Nice cafe and shop also
K. G.
A great cafe and bookshop, right next to the train station.
L.
I've just been to the cafe here a few time and it has always been great. Love the atmosphere a lot. I go here quite often for client meeting and the staff are very nice. All the food I've had here is pretty great too.
E. R.
Another well curated and stimulating show, thoughtful with a gleam of humour about everyday life.
n. p.
Excellent gallery, I'm mainly a fan of the cafe and book shop - check out the Vietnamese pork baguette for an amazing lunch. The shop has a good selection of lomo cameras and film.
G. D.
A few fancy tables, next to a cool book shop and a (free) contemporary art gallery. Excellent for a light lunch break. £20 for the two of us.
a. k.
Great art for free, nice café and dangerous bookstore to spend a little or lot in. Right next to Waverly Station, so easy to pop into for a spell if train is delayed.
P. B.
Fantastic curation of art and design books as well as eclectic souvenirs and potential presents. They also have quirky cards and stationery for sale.
Y. K.
Can't say I truly appreciate the ongoing Lee Lozano exhibition but the bookstore has a good selection of interesting titles. Well worth a look before catching your train!
G. M.
Wonderful space with engaging exhibitions. Brilliant shop with a wide range of items and gifts. Great that it's so close to the station.
J. B.
Too cold, heater not working. Sat there with coat on for the whole duration of business meeting. Service was good, staff were friendly and efficient.
K. M.
Interesting gallery. Good service in cafe and good food and drink. Noise is a big issue when it is busy. I feel that the tables are quite close.

(Translated) Senggajeon was in progress, and the guide was kind and explained it well. I asked the guide in the pamphlet that it was okay to ask the guide about samples, but he also gave an explanation of the work. Although it is a small gallery, it was nice to provide explanations of the works through a pamphlet ~~ It is a small size that you can see all the shops below in 30 minutes, but it is close to the station, so it is worth visiting. There were many cute items in the shop.
