Reviews of Castle Campbell

Situated up hill from the parking lot, they have additional parking closer to the gate up the hill. The Castle was closed and you couldn’t see much from the outside of the gate, however you can wander around the area to get a better view. Right before the wooden bridge you can hike up a hill to the right for a view of the Castle and the grounds.

The staff are very insightful and friendly. Pretty low-key place to check out with nice architectural ruins. Worth a visit. Wee walk down a paved/gravel path from the parking lot. Decent area for a picnic.
M. J.
Castle is closed at the moment but the walk up Dollar glen is fantastic. If wearing the right footwear & your used to walking it's a good walk. One bridge is out but diversion by the road.
A. K.
On a cloudy or rainy day I understand why this place is also called Castle Gloom. The place is easy to reach and surrounded by nature. Climbing up the hill just behind gives you an even better view of the castle, Dollar and nearby hills.
f. e.
Beautiful medieval castle in a magical atmosphere.
Take the walk along the river from Dollar, it is worth the small climb.
R. C.
Medium walk from parking to see family heritage. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Well worth the trip from California.
A. C.
Great attraction to visit if you're in Dollar. Walk through the picturesque waterfall filled glen to get here and you can make a day of it . You can climb 4 floors of the tower to get out onto the roof giving you spectacular views as far as the eye can see . 6 pounds entry well worth it .

An absolute gem of a find! Stunning. Of the beaten path. Not many tourists, lovely waterfalls. Fabuloys walks. DOG FRIENDLY. Peaceful and quiet. Not very disabled/wheelchair friendly due to location, not their fault. Lots of steps and uphills. Really beautiful! And a fabulous history ...
M.
Fantastic Castle. Great value and loafs of photo opportunities. Just a long walk from either car park so bare that in mind if you have elderly with you. But the castle is well maintained and quiet due to its location.
Highly recommended!
I. K.
Amazing place! If you to want to drive there be carefull because of narrow street. The nearest car park to the castle is for about 10 min. walk from it. Even we've visited it in rainy day the views are great.
A. N.
Do not miss this castle! The hike to get there is beautiful and the waterfall is as well. We really enjoyed the history of the castle and the VIEW from the top is extraordinary!
P. G.
Long climb to reach the Castle. Stunning views and great place for a picnic but be aware of having to carry your picnic a long way from Dollar Glen up to the Castle. You can drive to a car park near the top but there's still a bit of a walk from there also.
S. W.
I've lived just along the road my whole life! I had never been before now and OMG it blew me away!
The views are fantastic and the castle itself is really well looked after and a perfect picnic spot!
As a historic Scotland member the entrance was free and to be honest the price is pretty modest anyway!
The road up was a bit scary being so thin and winding but the walk from the carpark was charming and not too hilly!
Thoroughly recommend this attraction to tourists and those who live in the area but like me have never been before!
P. C.
Such a beautiful place. Definitely check it out if you are remotely near it. Not just worth it for the castle but for the walk through the Glen and the hills behind the castle as well. Very much worth a visit.
R. P.
A great castle with fantastic views. There are a couple of car parks, the one at the very top is small, the lower car park is larger and guides you towards the woodland walk up to the castle. You may be able to drop off disabled people in the staff car park right at the gatehouse (short, steep walk up to the castle) and then drive back down to the car parks.
The roads up to both car parks and castle are steep and it isn't the best for wheelchair or pushchair access (unless you have someone to push) and apart from the court and lower grounds you won't see much of the inner castle either as there are many levels and steps.
There is also a small ford (inches deep) across the road on the walk to the castle, with a narrow walk bridge, most pushchairs won't get across it and wheelchairs definitely won't (hence dropping off mentioned above).
There's a cafe, shop and toilet (though not really a disabled access toilet).
K. K.
Amazing location, I recommend to take a walk from mid car park and go back through the forest. Castle itself, not much to see...ruins, but overall experience is very positive.
D. د. ا.
Nice place for a quick stop. Took us about an hour to see the whole place. Some parts of the castle are still intact. There were information plaques on each level of the castle.
J. O.
Beautiful place, lovely views, great staff! If I could add anything it would be a small exhibition about everyday live at the castle, how rooms and halls originally looked like to support visitors' imagination
D.
Beautiful little castle with amazing views of the Glen. Looks like there are some good country walks in the area as well, though there wasn't time for me to try any myself.
D. C.
Lovely walk up through the Glen to the castle, not suitable for elderly or infirm but there is a car park at the top with easy access to the castle. Shame there is no cafe now but great location for a picnic with loads of walking opportunities.
A. B.
Beautiful place and amazing scenery. The small river/falls on each sides worth the time to discover. Can also be the start of a walk up the hill for an even higher point of view. Small parking (13 places) be aware. Can park down the village and walk up alongside the river.
L.
Lovely little castle, lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Even a dressing up bit! Stunning views across the countryside. There is a slight hilly walk, and parking is limited so would recommend parking at the big car park. A good wee day out with a picnic!
L. C.
Wow! What a castle, saw it way up on the hillside and had to walk up to see it. Dollar Glen is a great place too.
E. M.
Loved it, not as gloomy as you would think.
A fantastic piece of preserved history.
Thank you 😊
B. O.
Castle Campbell (originally named Caslte Glume) is spectacularly situated in Dollar Glen. It is a good example of a preserved tower house ruin.
Built in the 1400s, it served as the residence of the Campbells clan for around 200 years before they moved to Argyll's Lodging close to Stirling Castle.
Notable visitors to the castle included John Knox and Mary Queen of Scots.
Make sure you climb to the top of the castle to take in the views of the valley and glen.
The approach road gradient can be quite drastic in places so it is advisable to wear sturdy shoes; particularly in poor conditions.
There are two car parks on the main approach road; the main car park is half way up to the castle and a smaller car park is located closer to the castle with 19 spaces inc. disabled. From here, access is through a gate and a short walk through a shallow stream (take the optional bridge).
The castle isn't particularly large so amenities such as toilets and food are very basic. There are plenty of local cafes etc. in the area so keep this in mind.
Entry is free for Historic Scotland members. Prices are available on Historic Scotland website.
If you're looking to visit a hand full of properties with Historic Scotland then I do recommend you consider membership as it can save you money.
Definitely worth a visit.
J. K.
Lovely Castle in a stunning location, Dollar Glen is amazing to walk through as well.
C. E.
Amazing place. Staff very helpful. Dressing up are for all ages. Stunning views..a five minute walk from car park..steephills...but we'll worth the visit.
M.
Fantastic day out with children, not so much parking spaces but if good weather can climb up the hill!!
B. H.
Castle Campbell was also known as Castle as Gloom. Hence, you can do Gloom and Doom (Castle Doune) in one day in this lowland area.
There is a short walk which might not be for everyone and thus the walking is something to keep in mind. Otherwise it is a nice castle in ruins.
v.
Very scenic trek up Dollar Glen to Castle Campbell. We passed by a variety of waterfalls which gave me a few long exposure photos😀
L. G.
The drive up the road to this castle is narrow, single laned and has a lovely drop off to death, but the castle is beautiful and the views from the top of the castle are breathtaking. The carvings of the faces in one of the halls were incredible, and the gentleman working in the small gift shop was kind and informative.
P. S.
This has to be one of my favourite Castles to visit. The setting is stunning but Its not the most accessible of castles and an energetic walk is required from wherever you park. The top car park accommodates only a few cars and has a very steep narrow approach road and not for the faint hearted. There is a larger car park but the walk is even more challenging. Nevertheless, a visit here is well worth the effort.
U. L. o. a.
gorgeous castle ,lovely setting, great views but a steep hill if you don't get parked in top car park
M. R.
Absolutely stunning castle and location. Loads to explore and plenty of walks round about too.
H. C.
Lovely Castle in the town of Dollar. Surrounded by beautiful woods as well as several gorgeous waterfalls.
B.
Great staff
Great location
Good gardens
Great views
Very informative
Great castle
Small car park
Small gift shop
Nice outside sitting area
K. J.
Castle Campbell was amazing! My ancestors are Scottish Campbell's so it was special to me to walk the halls, to read the history plaques, and to experience this location.
J. M.
Amazing!! Nestled in the mountainside, surrounded by lush greenery. Rich in history with incredible views. This is one of my favourites!
b. s.
Hell of a walk to get to, but totally worth it! Make sure you go to the very top and see the amazing views!! Lots of nooks and crannies to explore and the surrounding grounds are beautiful.
D. P.
Castle Campbell is a stunning ruin situated above Dollar Glen. Follow a steep and the rugged path to the castle from the car park and along the way take in the views. With a fascinating history of the Campbells of Argyll to discover and 360 degree views from the main tower to take in. Castle Campbell is a great place to visit
D. R.
Brilliant castle with a full tower in great condition and an even more stunning backdrop looking over Dollar Glen.
D. M.
Fantastic castle with stunning views lovely gardens and great walks all around the glen
j. d.
Lovely place to start exploring the hills.
S. W.
Fairly sizeable Castle run by National Trust for Scotland. Lots of interior to explore and is set in the awe-inspiring Dollar Glen. There is a great walk up and down, and the more adventurous can keep going up beyond the castle, into the Ochil Hills. King's Seat overlooks the castle and is a great viewpoint.
P. B.
Impressive place to visit. The Castle and surrounding woods and hills - must see for everyone.
J. K.
Beautiful scenery. A definite workout hiking the Glen but views are spectacular
M. F.
Great spot. Can use national trust or heritage card to get in. Good walk up a hill and great views from the castle.
J. B.
A little taste of history set in a beautiful, tranquil location, very interesting to learn about it, helpful staff, good value for money.
P. C.
Lovely walk smashing castle. Well worth a visit.
S. B.
Beautiful path to the castle along the river with a waterfalls, great castle, stunning views.
G. M.
Stunning castle a must visit great views and great walking trail all around
C. n.
Missed the fifth star because it was shut. Beautiful setting.
J. C.
Actually, it's February and the castle is closed but the surrounding environs will always make it well worth the visit 😊
T. C.
Amazing place to go and see... Came right out of a lord of the rings book!
Y. C.
Lovely castle, beautiful setting, good shoes a requirement! Very interesting fitting it into the mix with Edinburgh and Stirling
e. o.
Lovely castle with a great watercourse by it and a lovely hill climb
e. e.
What a lovely views over forth road bridge and pentland hills, love to come back some other time and spending all day here, so relaxing
L. T.
A steep walk through the glen to the castle, but this was a castle worth the visit. Spectacular views from the top. Many castle features to be observed that are no longer visible in other castles. There is a lovely garden below and it is a pleasant place to spend a relaxing time before facing the walk back to the carpark.
R. H.
Well preserved castle at the top of dollar glen. Great view from the roof.
A. S.
Stunning scenery and great walking, parking for around 20 cars but it is easily a 10 minute walk to the castle taking in steep up and downhills. Great afternoon out. Realistically this is not wheelchair accessible.
T. R. P.
This medieval castle is amazing. The location is beautiful with amazing gardens. There is a lot of information about the castle and a chance to see all the rooms of the castle as they were hundreds of years ago!
I highly recommend parking at Dollar’s glen and walking up the glen as it is an amazing site, just make sure to wear wellies or waterproof hiking boots as it’s a steep hike.
This is really only a half a day activity so be aware that it won’t fill a whole day out.
Not really suitable for young children as there is a lot of steep steps to climb so please be aware.
R. K.
Very warm welcome. Beautiful scenery. This property belongs to: Historic Environment Scotland. Nicely spend Sunday afternoon. Just for few pounds a month it is possbility to visit almost every castle in Scotland - including Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle . I recommend that form of relax for everybody. Have you been there, what do you think?
D. F.
Small castle with lots of history and character. It's off the tourist trail a bit, which is surprising as it's well worth a visit, particularly if you walk up to it through the slippery green canyon of Dollar Glen. Great views over the Forth from the front of the Castle where John Knox was supposed to have preached
S. C.
didn't actually go into the castle but the surrounding walks were phenomenal. Well preserved and stunning few hours lost in nature. Some of the prettiest waterfalls were here. Would recommend bringing supplies such as some snacks and water as it is a walk that lasts easily 2 hours. Excited to come back to show the fam!
H. R.
Beautiful! I loved the historical advents throughout the castle. You can climb the beautiful spiral staircase all the way to the very top to get a magnificent view from high on top of the hill to down below where the courtyard is and the beautiful stream running down the side of the hill.
S. S.
Great place for the full family to enjoy
W. M.
Lovely castle and not too far a walk! Great for a stroll at sunset
L. M.
Lovely place at the edge of the forest!
R. M.
A very nice and charming place. Unfortunately, during my stay, the castle was closed and it was raining. You can probably see a lot on a beautiful day. Recommend
L. C.
Good view from the top. Enjoy the walk
N. J.
A real gem - great views from the tower. Park in Dollar and walk up the footpath which starts beside Dollar Museum. It's a bit muddy and is uphill all the way but you won't be disappointed with the waterfalls and the atmosphere as the castle appears through the trees
F. V.
The best view ever of the beautiful Clackmannanshire countryside awaits you on the top of the castle ramparts, breathtaking in the winter sunshine. Walk up Dollar Glen to get to the castle, rather than the easier park and walk. It's worth the effort and youll appreciate the castle more.
C. L.
Beautiful view over the town of Dollar and the Lowlands! Is at the top of a steep hike on foot (going on the road for cars) which becomes quite beautiful if taking the scenic route through the forest. Is accessible almost all the way in a car, with a few parking spots at the top but more at the midway point, which requires quite a good amount of leg muscles to get to the Castle. Run by Historic Scotland, so has a gift shop and friendly personnel (more caretakers than guides). Layout is made to be explored by oneself. Personally, I began in the gardens and then made my way through the ruins and then up the well trodden steps of the tower. Historical background is incredible and a must to enjoy for any amateur historian who doesn't mind a hike. No cafe or restaurant, but plenty of picnic benches.
K. M.
Return visit. Castle is ok, but walk up to the castle from bottom car park is the best. Worth extending the walk and follow the path towards King's Seat. Early in that walk spectacular views open up.
J. J.
Awesome castle, scenery and walks!
D. S.
Very cheery reception form the staff member at the shop on a very cold day, he was very helpful and gave us loads of information. The castle and gardens were fantastic with great views across the Forth Valley well worth the walk up the hill and if you take on of the paths back down you will be treated to some amazing waterfalls. (There are other paths also with waterfalls which we will go back to see at a later date)
J.
Great walk with dogs. Steep in places, so sensible shoes and take water bottles. Views are stunning. Loved it
M. D.
Vertigo-inducing spiral staircase in the tower! Stunning view from the top though. Great woodland walks around the castle and hill walking behind. Great day out. Kiosk at the entrance sells bottled drinks, snacks, books, etc. and tea bags (with hot water available in a small room tucked away in the corner. WC here too.)
Cafes are in Dollar, or bring a packed lunch if the weather is fine.
Not a great place for disabled or anyone not steady on their feet! But kids will enjoy the tower.
There are two car parks on the road up to the castle; the first one is good because you can approach the castle via the woodland walk.
M. C.
Glorious day for a visit- be aware the castle itself has seasonal hours so check ahead if that’s the purpose of your visit. The glen itself is well worth it, spectacular and moody even in sunshine.
M. R.
Beautiful place at any time of the year. Amazing views around the place. I recommend to park your car in the town or at the lower car park and have a wee walk up to the castle. Top cat park is very small.
J. D.
Closed Thursdays and Fridays from October to March. Worth coming up for beautiful little walks nearby even when the castle is closed. If you climb higher, you can get views of the castle with the town of Dollar below in the background.
P. Z.
Great place to visit, magnificent setting. With a stunning walk through the Glen to access the castle if you don't mind a modest walk it makes a great day out.
K. M.
Lovely place to visit with children
S. M.
Great place to take kids for a ramble. There is a path/walkway up either side of the gorge which takes about 2 hours to complete in its entirety. There are a couple of car parks so you can start at the bottom of you are feeling brave or drive up and start at the mud point. The walk up is really for able bodied, fit individuals and the castle has a shop for refreshments and toilets. A few trees have blown over (July 2016) so the rangers really need to get out with the chainsaws and clear the path but my little boy enjoyed clambering over them and cutting through the growth with the wooden sword we purchased from the castle gift shop!
M. T.
Steep walk up, but well worth the views from the top of the castle. Wonderful spiral stone staircases! Lots of lovely surrounding walk and burn running through the middle.
V. V.
Really nice, and maybe not one of the most famous, but if you want to combine castles + nature, you need to go there, after visiting the castle you could spend 2 hours walking thought the mountain and seeing some waterfalls.
But, the road is not very nice for the car :(
R. P.
Great stopping place for your walk on the Orchid Hills and the Glencoe Glen. A fully serviced teashop would be nice, but there are rather too few visitors to sustain one. The views from the tower building are superb, and after your visit, when you climb up further the castle is a beautiful landmark.
K. k.
Great castle great views
A. I.
Best appreciated if you park in the village and walk up the side of the river towards the golf clubhouse. The “Mill Green” entrance to the Glen is to the left of the small Dollar Museum. Follow the path through Mill Green up the Glen to visit Castle Campbell at the top. The steep climb can be slippery in wet weather but the wildflowers, trees and small waterfalls make it worth the effort. Easy walk back down single track road, Castle Hill follows by snack in village to finish off.
m. w.
The views were stunning and loved seeing the site!
T. D.
Great day at Castle Campbell. thanks so much for all the staff at the Castle.
M. O.
Beautiful hike up the Dollar Glen, and a very interesting castle. The terraced gardens are a great place for a picnic. Amazing view of the countryside
T. E.
If you visit and have small nice trek in to the hills it is amazing. I don't think it is worth to come here just for this castle. On the other hand glen going here is stunning walk.
A. A.
The must see castle when you are coming to Dollar Glen. Castle was closed for visitors because of covid19 but there was enough space to have a picnic or make some pictures. We will come back to castle when it opens again.
S. M.
We started off with a walk through the Glen which was an enjoyable trek, we reached the castle and made our way round which we thourally enjoyed but nothing prepares you for the breathtaking views once you get to the top brilliant
D. M. S.
I would have given it 5 stars but for the disabled access is shockingly lacking. Even if we could walk and push a buggy there is NO proper disable toilets. Sad it's a beautiful castle
G. C.
The best views are available from the top of the main building. A bit of a trek to get up here but well worth it for the castle and scenery. On a good day you can see for miles
P. E.
Fantastic Tower House. Lovely walk through part of the Glen. Quite strenuous. Worth the effort. Make sure you climb the tower as the views are spectacular.
S. C.
Outstanding views. Try and go on a clear day to make the most of them. Castle itself very interesting and atmospheric. The resident mice also seemed very friendly.
I. M.
Prepare to walk a fairly arduous trail to get there. The closest parking is very limited and the overspill parking is a fair distance away.
And there is a charge to get in to the castle.
N. C.
Beautiful location with an intriguing drive to the car park! Well worth a visit!
I. M.
Great views down to the Forth; helpful staff; and interesting historical castle with a rich history - where else could you find out that the man responsible for Mary Queen of Scots downfall had a bad case of the trots....
N. A.
Stunning walks around the castle.
B. T.
This was rather a mansion than a castle, but yet beautifully layed out. It's architectured to perfection. The mansion itself had two stunning gardens with breathtaking views.
N. I.
Good place for walk and fresh air 👌❤️🚶🚶♀️💕
K. W.
Very knowledgeable guide was able to help me with my own clan history. Castle looks great, setting idyllic. Kids would love it. Hailstones in June tho, dress warm!
L. M.
Lovely wee place for a visit.. but beware o things that go bump in the night for sure you can feel a presence in the upstairs rooms spooky 👻
G. H.
Unbelievable views and lots for the kids to explore. Try to make it here on a clear day. Great walks in the areas around if you want to combine a visit with a hike
J. G.
National trust and historic Scotland members free. Charges not shown till you get to castle which is a bit of a walk if you are not fit. Steep in parts. Also accessible up through the glen for the more adventurous.
J. D.
Beautiful castle still in pretty good shape. Remote enough that it doesn't have tons of visitor traffic and yet it's only 15-20 minutes from Stirling.
c. R.
A lovely small castle with stunning views. Not a lot of parking but a great, if steep, walk from the bottom of the glen to the castle
M. S. P.
One of the beautiful castle wave seen. And a nice good walk to reach the castle is a bonus too. The kids have enjoyed the walk. Will sure coming back here.
H. B.
Great castle, fantastic location and informative yet fun for children. Lots of walking which you can do round the castle on the Glen too.
L. H.
This was a really great experience. Beautiful views and the freedom to explore bother the castle and the grounds. Very helpful and friendly staff.
L. H.
This is a lovely little Scottish castle in a fantastic location overlooking the stream on one side and the river on another. It has loads of history and charecter entry price is very reasonable as well at six pounds an adult, as it comes with an audio tour as well for the price. Plus if you have ever seen the Monty Python Film 'The Holly Grail' you will have seen the Castle as it was used for most of the different parts of the film. The TV show 'Outlander' was also filmed here it was in the very first few episodes but of course you can learn more from the audio tour just press the extra buttons.
G. T.
Really nice walk with some lovely views.
C.
Great views, good to go for sunset.
M. S.
Small castle, lovely views with a good trail that takes you past a waterfall and back down to the village.
P. C.
Lovely walk collar Glen with Castle Campbell at the top. There is a car park closer to the castle for people unable to do the walk through the glen.
R. C.
We stumbled upon Castle Campbell quite by accident, but our visit there was fabulous. The Scotland Trust host, Mr Finlay Lumsden, was informative about the castle, had an engaging personality and was passionate about history and his job. He made our time at the castle one of the highlights of our Scotland trip. Bravo!
C. H.
Breathtaking views and if you can walk to the castle via the glen. Cosy atmosphere and yes bring food and drinks. Works out cheaper and offering is limited.
S. C.
Great staff, very friendly and knowledgeable. Tower not open yet due to Covid, but still plenty to see. See you at Dunblane abbey!
N. R.
Best view you can get in the area. Beautiful castle in an idelic location I could not have been more impressed and I've been 3 times!
J. A.
It was wet and cold, but we had a blast! If Finlay is at the desk, ask him about the Campbell family. His depth of knowledge is amazing and he can really tell a great story. We could have spent the day listening to him! Specially shout out to the tree surgery unit for helping an American idoit out with his car and not laughing!
S. D.
A beautiful place to visit.Ideal for a picnic. Not the easiest walk up Dollar Glen which is steep and the rugged pathways would be slippery on a wet day so take care.
J. K.
Very enjoyable trip around the castle. Views are spectacular on a clear day. Worth a visit
F. V.
Beautiful castle hidden in a mysterious forest complex. Nice and helpful staff. Beautiful view from the top of the castle tower.
H. B.
An interesting castle in a very pretty location. We walked up the glen towards it then back down the road. I liked the garden in the back.
V. S.
Situated in beautiful Dollar Glen (must be great for hiking) the castle with it's great descriptions (and picknick tables) is really worth a visit.
L. C.
I loved the historical feeling in this place, as you might guess from my name. A great old castle non the less, with impressive views.
C. W.
A beautiful place that never fails to deliver in its beautiful setting, no matter the weather. Do take a short walk to Souchie Falls. Only a few minutes but well worth it.
M. C.
Campbells visiting Castle Campbell. Loved it
M. B.
Great place to visit and for walks in Dollar Glen.
h.
Lovely castle with wonderful views but be aware that parking close to it is very limited so perhaps not ideal for anyone with very limited mobility.
B. B.
By far one of the best castles in scotland. Beautiful grounds, well preserved rooms, and great to explore! I fell in love!
J. N.
Good walk up to the castle through Dollar glen. A short but quite hard walk
Castle locked up.
L. T.
Very peaceful nice Robin ever present no humans lovely place great views meditation is great set in such serene settings love one light to all that visit x
C. W.
Fantastic castle to visit and explore. Great location with some amazing views of the surrounding area. Highly recommended to visit!!
C. B.
Definitely one of my favourites. Love the walk up Dollar Glen then the views are amazing, then walk back down the other side of the Glen. A lovely day out.
J. C.
Castle Campbell is a medieval castle situated above the town of Dollar, Clackmannanshire, in central Scotland. It was the lowland seat of the earls and dukes of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell, from the 15th to the 19th century, and was visited by Mary, Queen of Scots, in the 16th century.
The castle was originally known as Castle Gloom, possibly deriving from the Scottish Gaelic: glom, meaning a chasm, and referring to the narrow gorges to either side of the site. The naturally defended position may have been the site of a motte in the 12th century. The present tower was built in around 1430 for John Stewart, Lord Lorne (d.1463), or one of his kinsmen. About 1460, the property was acquired by Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll (d.1493), on his marriage to Isabel Stewart, Lord Lorne's daughter. The first historical record of the castle dates from the following year, when Pope Paul II issued a bull against Walter Stewart, son of Lord Lorne, for attacking and damaging the "Place of Glowm". Campbell, who was at the papal court at the time, may have been instrumental in arranging the Pope's intervention. The tower shows signs of early rebuilding following this episode.
The acquisition of Castle Gloom expanded the power of the Campbell family, from Argyll in the west into central Scotland, and suited Colin Campbell's position as Master of the Household to King James III of Scotland, which required his frequent presence at court. In February 1490, Campbell petitioned the newly crowned King, James IV of Scotland, to formally change the name of Gloom to "Castle Campbell", and this was done by an act of parliament. The change in name may imply that the term "castle" was seen as particularly prestigious, requiring royal approval for its use. At this time, the castle would have comprised the tower house, with other buildings arranged around the courtyard and gardens outside. The east range was probably added first, and some time after the accession of the 2nd Earl in 1493, the large south range was begun. This building shows the influence of the contemporary works at Stirling Castle, now known as the King's Old Building. It included a state apartment of hall, outer chamber and bedchamber, with large south-facing windows overlooking the gardens, and a view across the Devon Valley. The range also provided additional private lodgings, and was accessed via two symmetrically placed stairways facing the courtyard
E. W.
Nice view but castle still closed
I. N.
Castle is located on top of hill. Overall Castle building and garden are okay place to visit but walk around castle is very beautiful.
B. B.
Good castle with lovely views the lowlands family home of the Campbell family. Narrow road on approach to the castle and steep walk for access but worth it.
M. G.
Great place to see. Amazing castle and gardens around it.
B. M.
Nice castle and walks.
P. W.
Wonderfully presented insight into an interesting time in Scottish history. Very friendly, helpful and informative staff. Spectacular approach and views out over the Forth.
A. C.
Have visited 2 times before - great castle - not all in ruins - staff very informative - beautiful views
J. C.
Great place, very scenic. Brilliant walk around Dollar Glen but a fine set of working lungs are essential!
E. B.
Climb through the beautiful Dollar Glen. At 800 feet you'll reach Castle Campbell.
Stunning outlook from the Ochils over the Forth valley.
J. W.
A lovely place to visit surrounded by stunning views
S. N.

(Translated) This was the first castle that we got in Scotland. The entrance to it goes through a picturesque village. The navigator made us wander a little. The parking lot near the castle is very small. Keep this in mind. And it is difficult to turn around there if there is still no place. The castle stands on a mountain and in general there is something to do. Some of the rooms in the castle have exhibitions that recreate the medieval lifestyle.
The area is very well maintained and there is a small shop that sells tickets for tea / coffee and souvenirs.

(Translated) Beautiful castle with a great view on top. Also from the garden a beautiful view, both on the village below and the castle itself. The walk there is already an experience. You can walk in the area. Friendly reception. Visited with the Scotland Pass.

A great castle, surrounded by greenery on a hill. If you want, you can also choose from the fundus a dress in the style of the old days, and thus to move around the grounds. A great memory. We also got from a very nice staff which tells the story. Not completely preserved, but definitely worth seeing.
