Reviews of Glasgow Police Museum

Wow, what a little hidden gem in Glasgow! A small, but well stocked museum giving you the history of policing in Glasgow. Run by extremely friendly volunteers whom served within the police force, they love to tell you little tidbits of history. My fiancé absolutely loved it here. Highly recommend a visit. Plus, it’s free, but donations are welcomed.
F. S.
This place is phenomenal! according to my son but I don't disagree. This is a great wee museum with very knowledgeable (ex-police) staff! There is so much to see and learn when you are there... with quizzes for the little people as well... we will be back!
K. S.
Very helpful guides at the museum with a complete history of the Scottish police force tucked into a small place. Really interesting collection of uniforms, badges, and pins. I liked learning about cases solved by the force including bank robberies and grizzly murders.
Also impressive is the collection of international police uniforms. The owner told us he has even more not on display that he was able to show us pictures of!
Definitely recommend this small free museum to any tourist in the area.

It's a lovely museum. Educational. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. You have a tour guide to show you round and tell you about the police history. There's so many different types of uniform and each tells a story. It's a good day visit for a family.
L. F.
Small museum with interesting curios that packs a lot into a small space. I particularly liked the police box, the sections highlighting notable female police officers from the Glasgow police and the international police uniforms exhibit. The staff (retired police officers themselves) challenge you to find a country they don't have something from! (I was amused to see they even have a Manx police helmet!)
The staff clearly enjoy sharing their knowledge and I found out quite a few interesting facts from them I wouldn't have got from the exhibits alone.
W. R.
I was amazed at how much this small museum contains. The Glasgow Police Museum has over 2,000 uniforms, badges and artifacts from every single country in the world! Yes, every single country in the world! But this museum has only 2 small rooms to display. The history and education is so rich, and diverse - literally representing every country. I have never been so excited visiting a museum like we were. I actually met the curator (forgot his name) and took some pictures with him. They were so kind and professional, not even asking for donations, but we obliged. Thank you so much folks!
What a shame to see other large museums like Glasgow national museum having larges spaces/rooms to display just a few arts from unknown elite artists and spending literally millions on some bizarre irrelevant art!
o. v. h.
Amazing museum and the people working there are so passionate. Thank you for the tour! Must visit when in Glasgow!
M. N.
Great little place! The tour guides were very knowledgeable and it was filled with interesting stories and artifacts. Loved the checkered floor pattern!

This is a very small museum, hidden a way in an inconspicuous building, but it is packed with so much information (interesting stories about the police forces past) that we were able to occupy ourselves here for well-over an hour and could have lasted longer if our baby daughter didn't want to get moving. The staff were really friendly and clearly care for the place a lot. Highly recommended for a visit if you happen to be in the area.
R. O.
Just drop by. You don’t need to book but be careful of the open days of week.
A Gentleman privately have collected his collections.
He’s very kind.
You can find very rare things such as North Korea’s and Libya’s uniforms!
O. D.
It's so good to visit. This tells u the history of how Scottish police is the first police in the uk
H. R.
Excellent destination for a father with a disinterested 13-year-old son who actually only plays around on his mobile phone all day. Two friendly ex-policemen guided us very individually through the museum with numerous entertaining stories around the exhibits. My son thought it was great, in his words "the best thing" on our trip through England and Scotland. Highly recommended. Take a look!
M. S.
Small place but warm staff and the game for kids is fantastic!
C.
Very kind and informative staff. Loved the room with all the different countries police uniforms. It's free entry but I would highly recommend you donate. Worth the visit!
M. Y.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit this morning. The Museum is curated and staffed entirely by ex-police, who are so knowledgeable and full of stories. We visited with children, and there is a quiz for both older and younger children who get a certificate if they give it a good go.
As well as the history of the development of the uk's first ever police force and dog unit, there are uniforms and paraphernalia from the 1800s to the present day in the UK, and uniforms and badges from police forces from around the world.
A free museum, so friendly and welcoming hidden away in Bell Street, Glasgow, well worth an hour of anyone's time.
D. R.
Absolute 5 star experience. The two volunteers that were working were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The museum was very interesting and a good collection of historical artifacts and memorabilia.
M. K.
Totally recommend. Very interesting and educational. Super friendly guides.
J. M.
A hidden treasure of a museum! Deserves to have some funding to get it in a bigger venue. As well as the story and exhibits chronicling UK’s first Police Force, the International police exhibition is world-class
m.
Tucked away in Merchant City is this nondescript museum. It's a very compact museum consisting of two rooms. The first and bigger room is all about the history of the police force in Glasgow. There's a lot of reading by the way. Lots of boards with information and little stories over the centuries of the force's existence. For me the best part of this room was the plaque and exhibits commemorating members of the police force who serve in the first or second world war.
The second, much smaller room exhibits uniforms from police forces from around the world, plus badges for regional polices forces from around Scotland. Which was really enjoyable as the exhibit were if such high quality.
This museum is well hidden away from the main attractions in the city and not an obvious attraction for the average tourist. However, it's definitely worth seeking out.
P. '.
It's not exaggerating big as a museum, but it's incredibly interesting! It takes you around 1 hour, more or less, to visit and it closes at 5 pm. Don't worry if you don't see the entrance at first, it's there and it's free of charge! Donations are welcomed and, honestly, well deserved! There are just two halls but they're stuffed with intriguing items to the brim! Uniforms, photos etc will silently guide you through the slow process of evolution of the Scottish police, from the very beginning to the 70s. There's also a tiny hall dedicated to uniforms throughout the world and a little corner for police related gifts. Handcuffs and whistles mostly.
You can also leave a sign of your presence by signing the visitors book. The staff is very welcoming and available for any kind of explanation or just to chat a little, very friendly indeed!
Don't know whether there's a parking lot or not, but it's in the city centre so you shouldn't have troubles getting there.
If I remember correctly though there's no entrance accessible for disabled as there were stairs, but not 100% sure, I'd recommend asking for it in advance.
I'd recommend a visit anyway, well worth it.
C. K.
Can't believe how interesting this actually was!
Nice little Police mesuem hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Glasgow
Definitely worth a visit, and as it was free I definitely had no problem dropping a few quid in the donation box, much prefer this than a fixed price.
l.
In town for concert popped in for visit. The 2 gents we spoke to were very friendly and knowledgeable. Great exhibit with local history and a vast selection of police uniforms and badges from around the world.
A. D.
Spent nearly 2hours in this small museum.Staff so friendly and knowledgeable. Was a policewoman myself nearly 60 years ago , so many memories came tumbling back..
A great big thank you.
r. c.
A glasgow hidden gem,it is not big but it is full of stories and anecdotes , do not hesitate to ask questions to the lovely and very friendly gentlemen there, they will delight you with stories about glasgow , scotland and how they came to collect some of the items. If you're visiting you have to stop by !
M. A.
Small but very interesting museum with the history of the Glasgow police. A number of backstories of fascinating police cases over the years too.
A. Y. G.
The stars are the staff. Talk to them and you'll learn a ton of stuff.
Also, there's a great portrait of a German Shepherd.
E. W.
Great look into the Glasgow's police history. You have to know that it's there to find it. There is a lift and disabled access but it's a bit of a squeeze but the staff were were very willing to help and very knowledge.
E. C.
I work in the museum. It has a lot of visitors from all over the world. Also police officers from all over Britain and a wide variety from near and far.
Very enjoyable to see families with there kids enjoying themselves. Taking part in the competitions. Which they get a certificate they can take home with them.
The entrance to visitors is free but a donation would be much appreciated. Thank you.
S. B.
It's a very small museum but the curator was really friendly and helpful. The museum itself has the insignias and uniforms of every single country in the world.
C. M.
A hidden gem in Glasgow!! Eddie and Alastair took us round and told us everything there is to know about the history of policing especially in Glasgow. Both funny and passionate people, plus it’s free!
A. C.
Amazing little find - tonnes of info packed into the space. Well worth a visit, 2 lovely ex-policemen there to welcome us and add insights.
P. d. P.
Five stars for the enthusiasm and dedication of the volunteers, ex-policemen, who make this a great small museum. Free entry. If you are in the area, drop in for a short visit. If you are more interested, the text with the items brings great depth in detail. Entrance a bit difficult to find though, so posted a picture. Recommend the museum to put a big sign at entrance.
L. T.
A brilliant experience which we became aware of on the hop on / hop off tour bus. Our visit was enhanced by the knowledge and personal input of the curators, both of whom were retired police officers. Well worth a visit.
T. Q.
Look out for this. You probably won't notice this place at first. It's small, one floor up, quiet, only open twice a week and has a small entrance to the side of a large restaurant. But the Glasgow police have an interesting story to tell. For a start there history go several years before Peel thought of the idea, they pioneered many things that became standard such as using telephones/ police boxes, training dogs etc. Several interesting criminal cases are featured, e.g. Bible John. While some exhibits are interesting, it's the friendly, informative staff that make the experience.
M. M.
Great little museum off the beaten path staffed by friendly, knowledgeable curators who made the place come alive.
G. B.
Brilliant wee museum. The guys were so knowledgeable and entertained us with stories of daring do from over the years. My daughter Samantha is doing a project on the history of uniforms for her university course and the curator, Alastair, went out of his way and spent time to provide her with as much information as he could. Great day out, highly recommended it.
a. B.
Must see free museum. Gives you a unique perspective on Glasgow police
P. H.
Must be the smallest museum I was ever in.
You don't need to be much of a detective to work out what's in there.
I enjoyed my visit, but then I like historical references to the Police, crime and the individuals on both sides of the law who are the contributers to this museum.
Definitely worth a visit if you like history and infamous police Investigations.
K. M.
Fantastic little museum, it is run by former coppers who are very informative and friendly and made the whole experience for me. They have a little detective task for the kids who get a detectives certificate when they complete it. My 8 and 11 year old loved it. Unfortunately, this place is threatened with closure so please visit and make a donation!
D. A.
Small but lots to take in. Great staff and very interesting
J. M.
Visited here on a whim as I was passing by and so glad that I did. Free entry to what is a brilliant wee museum full of interesting stories. The staff were super friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about the topic - make sure to ask the ‘big deaf policeman’ (sure he’ll explain) for some of his stories of his time in the force, and anecdotes of other interesting stuff that didn’t make the boards. 5 stars, well worth a visit
e. t.
Really nice place, bit of fun. Run by passionate volunteers. Spent an hour here and kids loved it.
M. M.
A fantastic potted history of the Glasgow Police Force.
There is a lot of what looks like dry boring material but it is in fact very interesting. One of the museum staff , a former Glasgow Police Officer himself kept popping over to tell us first hand accounts and his own stories of being on the beat. It was fascinating to hear his tales and how policing has changed over the decades.
It is a free museum but you are encouraged to leave a donation after your visit. We'll worth an hour of your time if you are in Merchant City.
T. B.
Great to learn the history of Scottish police force. Lovely guys too
C. M.
Quirky little museum. Manned by informative volunteers. History of Scottish police forces.
Uniforms from police forces from many countries . Free but small donation very much appreciated
C. S.
We arrived here, expecting to spend about 30 minutes having a quick look through some bits that had been collected over the years.
How wrong we were - the collection and information were very well put together and we ended up spending about 2 hours looking through everything. The collection of uniforms, patches and badges from all over the world are second to none.
David and Alastair were incredibly knowledgeable and had several good stories to share.
Definitely worth a visit.
A. C.
This is a little gem of a museum. Staffed by ex serving policemen who are interesting & informed & who make you feel very welcome.
J. H.
Worth a visit as it's a trip through Glasgow's policing history with very helpful and friendly retired officers. So much history!
r.
Located upstairs in the building, this small museum is worth a visit.
You get a view of history not commonly told, how the civilian police was formed in the UK. Lots of stories and memorabilia on display to learn from. It should only take 20-30 min to view the whole thing.
D. H.

Glasgow Police museum building is near to the city centre and located on the first floor of a building. Thought it was small museum and could cover in 10 minutes, but on the contrary it took around 1 hour. The place is fully utilised and if you spare some time to read through the contents displayed, will find many interesting facts. For kids they provide a small challenge to find items in the muesum and provide a certificate. Muesum provide a evolution of the police force over 200 years. Uniforms of various police across the globe is also intresting. Another key highlight is the staff, they are very friendly and knowledgeable. A must visit if you like history.

i must say its a wee museum but well worth a visit. Full of genuine items, articles from the most notorious crimes to the ones you haven't heard about and a really intimate insight into the history of policing and crime in Glasgow. A must see free museum, in the centre of the city, particularly for anyone interested in crime. It's the real deal. Has display of police uniforms from around the world also. The guys that run it are really helpful. Google it, to find address as otherwise you may walk past it without noticing. Been twice over last year. There's always something new to notice, even though it's very small. Part of its charm. Please leave a like.

(Translated) A super small museum where no entrance is charged in downtown Glasgow on the history of the Scottish Police organized in 1800 which exhibits interesting equipment of police officers from a period of more than 150 years, various records, photographs of resolved cases. The same museum exhibits parts of the uniforms of various international police in the world, as well as the youngest recognized countries in the world of South Sudan, as well as the country from which I come from Croatia. The leaders are retired police officers with over 30 years of police work who volunteer at the museum and with their enthusiasm and interpretation of certain events further enhance the experience that museum visitors can gain. Be sure to visit Glasgow, recommendation ...

Our visit to the Glaswegian policemuseum was a really happy accident. The museum is lead by retired Glaswegian policemen who burn to tell their stories about the police work in the old days, policeboxes and more.
The entry is free.

Our visit to the Glasgow Police Museum was a real stroke of luck. The museum is run by former policemen from the Glasgow police force, and you can really tell how much passion has gone into the small but interesting museum. Here you can find out all kinds of exciting things about the Glasgow police and the police boxes spread across Glasgow and why there was often confusion among French tourists in the past.

Traces the development of policing in Scotland and features a wonderful collection of police uniforms from around the world. Everything is very well explained there, both in writing and by the managers who take the time to come and discuss the museum and their anecdotes about the police.
