This is an architectural and historical gem. Acquired by the National Trust it has been restored to its original state, a fantastical mid Victorian seat for a self made man and his family. Designed by Alexander Thompson in what he imagined to be a Greek style it is more reminiscent of the faux Egyptian style of the Art Deco period.
There is a small tea room, and you can visit the Snuff Mill bridge about half a mile away along the White Cart river.
There is a guided tour - very well done. Add this to a tour including the Macintosh house and the typical tenement (also NT) and you get a real feel for Victorian Glasgow.

Great restoration work going on here. NT only had 1% of the original decor to work from but the progress to today's condition is phenomenal. The guided tour was around 50mins and very interesting as our guide clearly knew her stuff. We didn't use the Tearoom but inside and outside seating was available in a pleasant setting.

A hidden gem in a beautiful part of Glasgow. The grounds and gardens are fantastic, great for an afternoon amble or dog walk. The Victorian Kitchen garden looks amazing with some fantastic fruit, veg and herbs on show. The house itself is a great example of Alexander Thomson's architectural artistry and well worth a look.

Beautiful location, knowledgeable guides and fair price. We really enjoyed the tour too! Perhaps some signage/info about exiting the grounds to get to Linn Park would be helpful.

Holmwood House has been beautifully and painstakingly restored, with rich displays of design and colour by 'Greek' Thompson. A very pleasing outing, with a nice cafe too!

....it's on our doorstep but had never visited before.... fabulous experience 👍 the tour guide was so informed and friendly and adapted the tour to address specific questions - stunning beautiful building - thoroughly recommended

Beautiful Alexander Greek Thomson house to visit. I hadn't been since the refurbishment and it is stunning. The details on the ceilings, walls and woodwork are amazing. We did the guided tour and our guide was very well informed and able to answer our questions. Well worth a visit ⭐

Thoroughly enjoyed walking around the inside of this amazing building. Tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and shared a wealth of interesting information with us including details of her own input during the restoration. We will very likely be visiting again.

We had an excellent tour from a lovely young Spanish guy. He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the property and all Victorian buildings in Glasgow. He kept our interest throughout the tour. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to this property.

Great visit to holmwood house - fascinating buildong with a great history. Card machine was temperamental so advise taking cash for entry or coffee shop! Volunteers were informative and friendly.

Haven't been here since it first re-opened, it's now looking gorgeous inside with a really sympathetic restoration. One of Glasgow's gems.

The restoration is amazing. We last visited as the work was just beginning many years ago. What a difference.

Recently visited this fascinating and historical location, great to see it has now had many of Greek Thompson’s original features restored, easy to navigate the rooms and there’s loads of information cards in each room also helpful and informative staff on hand if you should require.Be sure to visit the tea room, good selection of scones and cakes as well as a variety of teas and coffee,a bit cramped when busy but worth it for a wee break, lovely gardens beautifully kept and ample free parking.Run by The National Trust so there is an entrance fee if not a member but well worth it to see this piece of local history being cared for and back in the public domain.

Closed till Saturday 17 September 2022 and it seems you have to book a (free) half-hour slot through eventbrite. 17th already full.

Holmwood House is a very special place, you'll know what I mean if you ever pay it a visit. Volunteers on hand and they are very knowledgeable about Holmwood. A lovely old place, so glad it was saved for the nation.
J. S.
A meticulously restored Greek Thomson gem, one of the few of his private residences left standing in Glasgow.
J. M.
Interesting Greek style villa with some fascinating on going restoration with the interiors. Good for National Trust membership
j. a.
Very much enjoyed the cafe and the tour with a really knowledgeable guide
C. H.
Idiosyncratic house exemplifying the distinctive style of Victorian architect Alexander 'Greek' Thompson. The house is lit as if under gas lighting so unfortunately on a poor weather day it's difficult to see some features. Guides were helpful in explaining much of the decorative detail.
b.
Breathtaking example of "Greek" Thomson architecture and interior design.

Beautiful Alexander "Greek" Thomson house commissioned by the Couper Bros. In the 1850's who were wealthy paper and stationery manufacturers. Their generous funds built the famous Victoria Infirmary. The house has beautiful gardens with a pair of Giant redwood trees imported from California. The house is currently closed for indoor viewing but the gardens are open and free to visit with magnificent views of the house . An exceptional experience.
A. C.
Wheelchair accessibility is minimal but very interesting nonetheless

Amazing restoration work on the Greek Thomson decor.

My very first visit to Holmwood House. Having lived on it's doorstep for around 40 years I decided to see for myself what it had to offer , I was not disappointed .
Owned by the National Trust for Scotland , my first impression was , what took me so long to visit such an interesting place.
What made it such a good visit was the staff , from the minute I walked in the door I was very warmly welcomed by Jean who took the time in giving me a description of the House and the family behind it , it was very obvious she took great pleasure and pride in her role.
During my visit I also met and spent time with Louise and Jim, the manager of Holmwood House who were welcoming, informative, knowledgeable and most importantly, friendly.
I would highly recommend a visit to Holmwood House and I will certainly make return visits.

Beautiful house but staff are a bit useless. Gave us wedding dates that weren't available etc.
B. M.
Had such a nice time. Guides were really helpful and friendly. House very well restored recently. Beautiful
B. M.
Alexander Thomson at his very best. Only saw the outside of the house, coach house and grounds as the property was closed but will return soon to see the inside. Amazing detail all around for a mid 19th century property. The restoration work is first class and the grounds are beautifully maintained. Gardeners were there the day I visited. Quiet and peaceful amidst the busy southside Cathcart.
... I have returned and the inside is magnificent. A must see. The workmanship at the time was amazing and the restoration is superb. A lot has been done with more yet to do to complete all the rooms as they would have been when originally built.

Upstairs undergoing renovations, (should be all open now), so it was pay by donation to see the downstairs. Best guides ever: knowledgeable, warm and made us laugh. Wee tea room. Impressive house and garden.
J. M.
Beautiful house. Upstairs being renovated so just took a donation. An older lady, can't remember her name, showed us round. She was wonderful and obviously passionate about Greek Thomson. She really made the place come to life and we learned so much from her. She is a total asset to the place. Thank you.

Its not very often you get the chance to stay in Greek Thomson building so we were delighted when we book for the property last week, the accommodation was cosy and comfortable and made for a good base when exploring the South side of Glasgow and the centre itself. We visited the mansion house of the Thursday and had a fabulous tour of the house all of the staff were very welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. A real gem of a property. Please leave a like.
