Reviews of James Arthur Monument

This statue stands in tribute to James Arthur, a Scottish clothing manufacturer and one of Britain’s largest wholesale clothing dealers. A bit like the Gap of his days. James Arthur began manufacturing ready-made clothing in the 1880s and the business prospered that by the time of his death, his company had three clothing factories and employed over 700 travelling salesmen.
The statue shows James Arthurs standing proud, right hand raised to his chest and left arm in his trouser pocket. The statue stands atop a plinth with an inscription that reads "A memorial of respect and esteem from those who were in his employment". As you can imagine by the inscription, James Arthur was a popular man who was given this memorial by his employees.

The business prospered and, at the time of his death, had three garment factories and employed over 700 street vendors.
In 1847 Arthur married Jane Glen and supported her campaign to become Scotland's first female member of a school board. After Arthur's death, she established the Arthur Fellowship to promote medical education for women.
