Reviews of Lochranza Castle
Easy to park up, and walk to the small castle. As at August 2022, the castle is surrounded by fencing as mortar has been falling from the castle. Castle is set in a very scenic location.
Lochranza is a beautiful place and the castle stands proudly alongside a stunning bay. It makes a perfect quick stop off being only meters from the road with room to park. There are also picnic benches available to use overlooking the bay. Access to the outside of the castle is wheelchair friendly along a tarmac path. The castle itself was barriered off when I visited due to unstable stonework so I couldn't go inside, but there were information boards to read and the quiet peaceful setting early morning was a still a wonderful experience.
Beautiful peaceful location with scenery so pretty... The castle is locked off so you can't go inside but still a great place to just sit and watch the world go by.. xx
Probably the best spot on the island for me in terms of postcard image view. Stunning. Go there the moment you arrive on Brodick.
The drive coming from the west coast is something you’ll never forget.
Very beautiful ruin of a 13th century castle. The castle and surroundings are so typical scottish. Apparently herge and his assistent Bob de Moor ( he was actually the one who went to the UK to do the sketching) had the same thoughts because they used it as an inspiratie for a tintin adventure ( one of his best)
A lovely spot in the sunshine. You can't go In the castle but I believe you could before. The location gives this 5 star, the castle itself is not much to look at but if you like history you will appreciate it
I am a castle fanatic and love to look around them so i was really disappointed that this was closed off with a fence all around, there was a sign stating the upper masonry needed checking hence the reason for being closed off.
yes disappointed but it gives me another excuse to revisit the island :)
A beautiful little castle ruin in an amazing setting. You can drive right up to it which is cool. And its free! Lots of deer and sheep kicking about aswel so better to park at the side of the road and walk along.
Very well looked after. Nice walk around the castle too
Lovely ruins of Lochranza Castle to explore - we all enjoyed exploring and peering out where we could too. Lots of wildlife nearby - sometimes you are lucky enough to spot deer grazing right outside the castle (not this time for us!) Very picturesque and a must-visit.
Beautiful place colourful gardens great walks fun castle and great cafe amazing wildlife
Absolutely Beautiful Bay Castle is set in,lucky enough to get the Sun,very Idyllic surroundings
Lovely location, and maintained by Scottish Heritage who have provided good informative plaques within the castle. You can get into the castle to have a wander around, but it's not that big. Would take about 15 minutes to read and see most of it. Lovely views.
Worth a look as part of a walk but not really enough to be a specific destination, unless you're REALLY REALLY into castles. It's a castle, Scotland is full of them in varying states of repair. Best bit is the surrounding area, it's lovely. Very relaxed deer on the golf course nearby, such a nice thing to see
Great old ruin. Some great history on the boards around the castle. Definitely worth a look.
Area gated off. Small ruins. Nice stop, but not worth a special trip.
Well worth a drive to the North of the island.
Amazing little place with scenic views of the castle and sorrounding area. Excellent little pebble beach that stretches beyond the castle. Loved skimming stones with kids only downside is that you cant access the castle or walk all the way round but best to keep it safe for all and protected for years to come!
Nice 13th century castle ruin near a very beautiful fishing village.
Part of a coach trip we were on. Lovely scenery. The castle was closed and has been for a while.
Nice stop on the way around the top of arran. Maybe 20 mins to half hour needed for a stop and walk round and very close to Lochranza distillery
Stopped of at Lochranza Castle and had a fantastic walk through until the heavens opened up in other words the rain came down vertical and horizontally we ran back to the car to try and dry off......☔☔☔☔☔
Unfortunately closed so couldn't re-visit the way I remember from 10 years ago. But still looks impressive.
Beautiful day on this lovely island
Beautiful old castle located in the sea loch of Lochranza
A beautiful castle located in a stunning setting. Gorgeous views from every angle and only a stone's throw from the ferry terminal. Most visitors to Arran seem to arrive at Brodick but, if you can, arrive at Lochranza, and you'll spot this castle straight away. I want able to enter the castle on the day I visited but that didn't matter, it was well worth the visit.
What a view... Castle under repair has been for a while. But the scenery is worth the visit... We had a great picnic at the shore right besids the castle. Worth noting its a small castle....
Lovely little fishing village and castle!
The museum is currently closed but the grounds are still worth a visit for the views.
Lovely castle in a beautiful part of Arran.
Not much to see it is all locked up, maybe just the day we were there, it sits in a nice location
Merc
Lovely castle in very picturesque surroundings particularly at sun set
Stunning backdrop for the fireworks just before the end of our adventure in Arran
Nice photo opportunity if the water is still.
Wonderful castle, looking out to sea and a wonderful ruin to explore. A must visit if on the Isle of Arran.
13th Century Castle - and little beach - very pleasant.
Great little castle, lovely views all round. Shame it is closed.
Lovely wee trip around the north of Arran and stopped at the castle. Crystal clear water all around
Great castle, free to enter, signs tell you more about the castle and unlike other castle ruins you can actually access the staircases and climb up the the middle level.
Very cool settling, nestled right in the heart of the bay and you can get right up to the castle! Can't get inside might you, but free and delightful addition to road trip around the island
Located between the ferry of Lochranza and the Arran distillery this is an easy catch. The castle is free of charge and you can explore several rooms. The state of the builidng is quite OK or a ruine. You could park your car first at the parking lot of the ferry and walk by foot to the castle. Like this you can be sure you be in the line for the ferry and visit the castle. Of course, make sure you are back in time to board the ferry :)
Small castle in a picturesque area
Its a castle but come here for the view from place not the castle, since its not so good and very small
Nice location 👌
It was quite busy when we stayed, and because of Covid 19, the toilet & showers were restricted, as a result there were people queuing for quite a while.
The staff that we spoke to were very friendly & helpful 🙂
It was nice to see the stags just a short walk away by the golf course ❤
We did have a bit of problem with the dreaded midge on one night, lol
There were quite a few people wandering around with those midge nets on they're heads 😁
Overall, a nice site in lovely part of the world
A very pretty spot to stop & have a wander.
Lovely place, grey scenery
Lovely ruin, short walk from carpark area.
What a lovely little place. Crystal clear waters. Definitely worth a visit if your on the island.
Lochranza is a beautiful setting, with inlet to the sea on one side and smartly rising hills on the other. And between them, what remains of the castle. It is a ruin, but stable enough to explore. Minimal explanatory signage illustrates its evolution as a fortress. Apparently it's seen centuries of home improvement up to 17th, then abandoned. In some seasons the entrance is guarded by itinerant sheep, who do not charge admission.
Closed with fence surrounding, works, end August 2022. Looked great from outside.
Loved this quaint castle. Blocked off to the public (it's in a bit of disarray) bit what a setting. Stunning
Looks good, no access. Always seems to have safety barriers around it.
Peaceful place and perfect for relaxing, painting, drawing, photography. Cafe nearby available.
Couldn't go inside, but the outside is worth at least 4 stars for its beautiful surroundings. Add in the chance of red deer, seals and otters (if you're lucky), and some attractive nearby walks and you have the recipe for several enjoyable hours.
Shame it's cordoned off! Barriers spoil the beauty of the building.
A beautiful historic monument in a fantastic location
Fun for quick stop off with kids and free to visit too.
Such good views and such a great place to visit to take a picture and share memories.
It was a nice day, very little wind, making a lovely setting.
A great piece of Scottish history.
Absolutely stunning area and interesting history. A must stop of point for visitors wanting a bit of quiet
When the castle is open, it’s stunning .. love this spot on Arran
The peace, the beauty of the landscape, the purity of the air, the sound of the limpid water all contribute to make this corner of the island of Arran quite magical. Definitely worth a visit ☺️
Its a nice castle in a lovely setting. Bit of a shame that the information panels are all damaged and you're not able to visit inside (at any time I believe).
Disappointed that you could not go inside, looks like you were able at one time. Nice village to drive through, great views.
An interesting ruin in a positively beautiful area. Lovely views.....
One of the most beautiful place that I've never seen!
Unfortunately it was fenced off because of falling masonry so we didn't get to explore.
Great views all around the castle. I wish we would have had more time to spend relaxing on the beach next to it, absorbing the nature and the peacefull town
Nice spot and views near ferry and wee harbour. Can get a bit busy at times.
Our grandson loved the castle. He had lots of questions which we could answer from the information notes posted on walls. It was a beautiful day.. Then add to this that several deer popped down from the hills for a while.. Magical
Great place for some amazing photos especially at is is starting to get dark.
A really great experience, Lochranza Castle is set in the far North of Arran, there are still areas of the Castle that are still intact and give you a flavour of how they lived, I'd thoroughly recommend going for a visit,it has lovely surroundings for photographing it too.
Went on a day of sideways rain. No entry to the castle but an impressive building in an impressive setting
Beautiful scenic place. Even better when the deer come down
Lovely place very quiet and scenic, not so keen on the flies and midgies though
A visit if you're national trust is worth it. The scenery and gardens are beautiful. The shop didn't have much stock due to covid.
Just a sad old castle - but it does sit out on a lip in Isle of Arran and if you take the ferry from Claonaig to Lochranza, you can't miss it. It is an iconic place - but nothing much to look at....just provides a nice backdrop to your photos.
Not open.... despite it saying on the website that it was always open. We made a special visit and were therefore disappointed.
Fairly small as castles go but the ruin is well worth a look around. Even better that it's free. There is an annual festival too where the island's brewery serves plenty of beer; some are quite experimental flavours.
Got the bus here from brodick great views on way over, once here so peaceful and views are so beautiful. A 10 minute walk to whisky distillery for a lovely cafe stop before bus back 👍 …
Lovely castle stunning views
Great place for a walk around sadly its closed due to covid
Beautiful part of Scotland. Love it a must see though I can see the Isle of Arran every day from the main land
Nice little castle. Free and uncontrolled entry with lovely grounds and the area
Great view of bay and surrounding area, castle closed to viewings.
Nice ruined castle in the bay at Lochranza, a sleepy village on Arran. Go to the ferry cafe too, great sanwiches.
So very beautiful. A good tourist destination for if you are a Scottish conservative like myself. Prove how stinky the SNP government is.
Awesome 4500 years ago, just can't get my head around that!
Lovely ruin, in an extra special bay
When open for the season....the sandwiches from opposite the ferry are a MUST! Also, lovely, well kept public loos.
Lovely old castle built in the 1300, open to the public for free, it is a ruin but you can go up stairs giving you a stunning view of the Loch
No pay to see or walk round kiosk, just a lovely old castle from the 13 century on a finger of rock pointing into lochranza bay.
Beautiful castle close to the ferry. Definitely worth a visit!
Unfortunately shut for Covid at the moment but a brilliant place to go. Stunning scenery
Nice little stop off while touring. Really tranquil
One of the two castles from the island, great placement and beautiful surroundings in a nice Sunny day. So not miss it on your island tour.
A great little stop in beautiful surroundings
The castle is in ruins and was locked when we got there. Anyway, the loch views around the place is definitely picturesque.
Lovely castle which is far from a ruin and easily accessible for children to run around. No admission charge and free parking
Scottish history
Interesting ruined tower house but the main thing is the glorious setting on a spit of land jutting into Loch Ranza. Outstanding views in all directions
Lovely drive over Glen Sannox and as you drop down coming into Lochranza pretty as a picture such a good photographic area.
Used to be able to get in and feel the atmosphere but it is all locked up now.
Interesting castle although cordoned off
Nice castle but closed
Free parking and entry.
Beautiful wet atmospheric
Great views
Wet and very windy day we just looked around the outside, no access, lovely situation
Would be good to be able to go inside
Nice castle, but could be kept better
Would be lovely if castle was open
Beautiful setting
Well worth a visit. The castle is an empty shell but in a very imposing position.
Free to have a look. 5 to 10 minute stop off. Worth checking out if you are on this side of Arran.
Very peaceful and beautiful
More a fort than a castle. No internal access.
Lochranza is a small village will a few shops. Right next to the water and offers some cracking views. Castle is open sometimes..but not at time of posting this comment.
My gran parents use to bring me here this time I've came on my own as sadly lost my gran parents but have good childhood memories
If you have a spare 10 minutes whilst in Lochranza then it's worth a visit. Free to visit and with information boards
All fenced off. Not much to do or see
Small castle in a beautiful location
Nice place for break 👌 …
Lochranza Castle is very interesting and typical of Castles in Scotland, it is basqued in history and has cultural depths
Arron is a beautiful island
Lovely meal to start our holiday
Amazing view. Lovely peaceful area to visit
Well preserved but sadly can not enter
Beautiful sunset with LOADS of deer.
Nice coffee to sit out in the autumn sunshine as a break on a cycle. Not cheap, £2.75 for a flat white.
At bit busy, but quite an interesting place, fantastic views,
Thoroughly enjoyed climbing through the ruins just a shame it was overcast
It is a ruin with external viewing only at the time we visited but it is in a stunning location.
Lovely spot and the fact that you can walk in when ever for free is fantastic.
Lots of information boards explaining the different building phases of the castle
Travelling. 1800 mile road trip.
A must-see location if you are in Arran. Lochranza is a picturesque village and you are very likely to see deer, herons and seals in the vicinity - so bring your camera.
Atmospheric stop on tour if Arran currently not open
Great photo opertunity
Nice castle, free to see parking on site.
No access to the interior, but it's very scenic.
Good place to launch kayaks.
A lovely place but there seems to be a few strange characters living there
Old ruins, but nice, with high chances of seeing seals there
During summer months free Access inside in the most beautiful corner of arran
Off limits at the moment
Cool little place. Nice history
Nice wee catle to visit and take photos. Interesting. Sheep around it too
Old ruined castle. Worth a sh6irt visit on the way to the distillery just up the road
Picturesque, wish it was open!
Stunning location.
OK stopped while travelling around the island but it was shut in October so could not see inside so a little disappointed.
Great views
Not open on the day but interestng history.
Fantastic place to visit even on a wet day
Free car park and entry very interesting
Closed for repair
Beautiful. Dramatic. Romantic. Worth a visit
Interesting!
Nice little ruin on a spit across the bay at Lochranza. Info on site claims a 13th c. fortification found use through the 18th c., with architectural upgrades in the 16th and 18th centuries. The seaside beach of the spit beneath the castle has been armoured with stones, perhaps in the last century or so to protect against erosion, perhaps earlier. Sailors may also be interested in the bay: a protected harbour has mostly silted in, but there is a small pond and channel, which is nearly cut off from the open water at low tide, in which a few sailboats were moored; would have been an ideal harbour in its day. A dozen it so boats now lay moored or at anchor on the seaward side of the spit, in the bay. Also Isle of Arran Distillery and ferry jetty nearby.
Great place to visit
Definitely not a shady town
Beautiful place could do with facilities.
Nice view. Castle is OK.

(Translated) If you pass by, the castle deserves a photo or two, the landscape is very pretty. Plan to eat and drink. In Lochranza it's pretty but no shops or pubs to warm up. You will find toilets at the ferry terminal and at the "sandwich station" if it is open, you will find a counter where you can order hot sandwiches (or not) and drinks. But it's just a wicket. We're not going home.

It is easily accessible and the visitor will be able to go around it and even enter it. Its location near the shore is ideal for admiring the panorama which is truly fantastic.
