Reviews of The Tenement House
D. L.
Visited this historic place and found it quite fascinating. They have kept in tack living conditions over 60 years ago going back to the late 19th century. Very well done with lots of information about this period and how people lived and managed their daily activities. The attendants were well informed and very helpful as we had many questions. History buffs will find this place interesting and should not pass it up.
G. C.
Turned up just after 2 pm. The parking is on the street and cost me £2.00 for 1.5 hours. I got to the door and was greeted by one of the staff, who was very friendly and helpful. There are two flights. On the bottom floor is the information section and on the second floor is the house. I was taken aback by how remarkable it was. Taking a step back in time is an understatement. It was so surreal and mind blown. The ladies who presented it well with their knowledge and passion for what they do. I recommend you check it out. You will not be disappointed.

Here affords you a great chance to immerse in a Victorian middle-class family’s apartment vividly. The history in Glasgow becomes touchable. The voluntary docent was very friendly and helpful when we visited on a sunny afternoon. However, It's a very pocket-sized attraction, and if you're not a history buff, you might think it's not worth paying for it.
S. H.
Wonderful example of Glasgow life through the 20th century. This is an precious relic of Scottish history and Glaswegians are so lucky to have it preserved for future generation. I much appreciated the passion of its curators/guides.
D. G.
Glasgow gets a lot of bad press, not least because they bulldozed a motorway right through the city. This place is a time capsule of what the city lost. Whilst most tenements that survived were modernised, this one survived untouched. When you think of National Trust [for Scotland] houses you probably think of stately homes and castles. I actually think I prefer this. The volunteers that staff the place were very knowledgeable and could talk at length about any item. To get the most out of your visit ask them questions. You'll learn lots.
Y. W.
Great way to spend an afternoon. A step back in time with lots of information about Miss Toward who lived in the tenement flat. Definitely worth a visit.
a.
Beautiful view into early 20th century life, kind guides, tons of information and so many objects from days gone past.
M. T.
Well worth a visit. The apartment is incredible. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful and showed a passion for the building and it's history. Left me wanting more. Great to be able to look back in social history on 'normal ' people and their lives as opposed to the usual stately homes.
S. f.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Very informative and interesting to see. They had a room for background information about the woman and context from the time period aswell as a large area upstairs to show what the house looked like. No gaps in knowledge
Part of the national trust
Great visit, worth visiting while in Glasgow.
About 1-2 hour visit.
Shop is great they had fluffy highland cows made from 10 recycled bottles for only £10!!!
M. H.
Amazing museum! Get to explore Agnes’ house which is so special and unique. Love that they put her Christmas cards and decorations out in December! Staff are around in the different rooms to explain different things to you - we met Dawn who was the loveliest (super engaging and passionate). Overall highly recommend when in Glasgow!

Visited this historic house and found it very interesting. Superb examples of living conditions in a typical Tenement House since the late 19th century. Lots of information about this period and how people lived and managed their daily activities. The staff were well informed and very helpful in answering questions. Well worth the walk out from the City Centre to explore.

Fascinating trip back in time in a lovingly restored Glasgow home
j. m.
So many fabulous finds at Leigh's House. So refreshing to see unique and one off pieces to add to your home.
S. A.
Great place to visit in Glasgow. Took me back to my Grandad’s flat in Govan where I stayed 2 years as a young child although Agnes’s tenement flat bigger. Really puts things in perspective to the way we live now.
m.
Never visited The Tenement House despite being a Glaswegian. Finally came here today and glad I did. The Tenement House is a fantastically well preserved relics of a bygone era. The ground floor had two exhibitions. One is permanent with general exhibits partly about Glasgow and partly about one of the previous occupants of the tenement. The other is a changing exhibit, also about Glasgow, I think photographs of Glasgow from the 1960s or thereabouts. Upstairs is the main tenement house exhibit of the preserved flat, consisting of four rooms. There's lots here to see such as furnishings and equipment from mid 20th century to remind us just how lucky we are with all our modern conveniences.
A special mention to all the volunteers who were on hand to answer questions about the museum, the rooms and what life was like in the house. Kudos to all the staff.
I've seen many reviews comparing this to the Tenement in New York, which I've also visited. Each museum should be judged on its own merit and this museum is fantastic.
A.
A good incite into the working class tenement house, circa 1900 -1960. From the gas lamp to the soap all has been preserved. Not very big and with limited parking this is a good way to spend an hour of free time
J. S.
An absolute hidden gem in Glasgow, fascinating! How lucky we are that this little time capsule was observed and sold to the National Trust. Beautifully preserved and presented. The staff were so knowledgeable and proactive in sharing the information about the house and the tenant. It’s an absolute must for anyone living in or who has lived in a tenement in Scotland, as well as anyone who enjoys modern history. So many things I saw reminded me of my grandmother and her home, truly joyous on many levels.
U. S.
Beautiful and fascinating step back in time in an Glasgow tenement flat. I was surprised how small but perfectly laid out the rooms were, filled with interesting things. Definitely worth one (or multiple) visits. There are so many little details to explore.
M. P.
Definitely worth a visit. My friend lived in one as a small child and she was fascinated.
R. T.
A definite don't miss!
This is just superb, from the minute you enter the doorway the house draws you in.
Entrance fee is very reasonable.
There's plenty to reminisce, view, and learn about.
The volunteer guides are wonderful - always willing to explain and chat about the house and its contents.
I can't stress enough just what a delight this museum is.
Thank goodness that someone had the foresight to preserve it.
If you visit only one museum in Glasgow, make it this one.
N. C.
The Tenement House was truly fascinating. As someone whose grandmother grew up in a Glasgow tenement, I found it really helped me put a scene to several stories I heard in my childhood. It's not very often you're truly able to step back in time when you cross a threshold but that really is how you feel here. The letters on display downstairs were the most interesting as they really give you an insight into the life of the person whose house you're visiting.
A. J. J.
The Tenement House is the old apartment style building in Scotland. You can see many old life styles at that period because the house is well preserved. The price is somewhat expensive but it will be valuable for your trips.
A.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Nothing was a prob and full of information. I asked do u like your job she said I love it.
I recommended you visit.
J. F.
Lovely place. It's been very well preserved and looked after. A good look into the past. Would recommend a visit here.
F. C.
Fantastic time capsule with knowledgeable guides on hand. Would have been great if they could have a single end next door to show the contrast in living conditions for the poorer end of the spectrum.
M. W.
This is described as a Tenement but in truth it seems somewhat up-market with Victorian covings and elaborate curtain tracks along with a bath and toilet.
This surely makes it part of a mansion block.
More middle class than a genuine tenement where, for instance, there would be no bathroom and at least a shared toilet.
That said the letters were worth the trip alone. It seemed that Miss Toward was enamored of a a young man killed on the Somme. Very touching and tragic.
K. M.
Had a fantastic visit here - great look into a piece of historic everyday Glasgow life, and the NTS staff were filled with wonderful insights. We spent a good hour in the property, hearing the story of the tenant, Miss Toward, and the social changes she would have experienced, while her home was frozen in time.
Go here if you want to learn more about the history of Glasgow, as well as the history of one individual.
Also shout out to Joan Murdoch, the guide that we talked to for ages about the future of Scotland, family heritage, growing up in Glasgow, and how to spend your money before you lose your marbles!
J. M.
Loved it. Loads to learn about. Guides inside the property where very knowledgeable. Well worth the visit.
K. F.
Not a lot to see but interesting history nevertheless. Knowledgeable staff. If you have National Trust membership, it's free of course.
N. L.
A great musuem. Incredibly helpful friendly and knowledgeable staff brought the place to life.
Quite a lot of 'I remember this as a kid'
Very worthwhile hour
Went with our local hosts who hadn't been before but said they will definitely be back
D.
Interesting view of how people lived in the tenements in the first half of the 20th century. My ancestors in the 19th century in Glasgow would not have lived in quite such a nice one (4 rooms and indoor plumbing) but it still gives a flavour of that bygone era, with the gas lighting and bed closets. The only warning I would give is, it’s a nightmare for parking, you need to get vouchers from either the National Trust or local shops, and the maximum you can get is an hour, though that’s enough time to see everything.
E. L.
Loved this .......tells a story that's relatable. Amazing collection of items which help tell the social history of Glasgow
D. M. T.
Wonderful time capsule museum showing Glasgow tenement life in the last century. Lovingly restored and a knowledgeable team make this a a very interesting and nostalgic experience. Excellent 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 …
J. T.
Unique preservation of the urban life in Glasgow from the late nineteenth up until the 1960s. Excellent if you like careful preservation and nostalgic remembrance. Staff are excellent, knowledgeable, and eager to answer questions.
I. P.
Wonderful. A true feeling of stepping back in time. Staff were absolutely fantastic.
F. E.
Fascinating. Amazing how so much of the original fixtures and fittings are there. Volunteers were also so knowledgeable, helpful and friendly
P. K.
Nice museum, but very small, half of the house is private.
J. X.
The staff are friendly and the building is beautifully finished inside. But there are only two floors in total to visit and the whole tour doesn't take long unless a lot of time is spent on every detail.
M. R.
A real snapshot in time of a Scottish tenement house from 1935. The woman who lived there, Agnes Toward, kept her home relatively unchanged from 1935 until she posed in the 70s.. It is a great representation of life in Glasgow during that time. And, unlike in the US, a 'tenement' doesn't have the same connotation of poverty. It was more of a house than an apartment, and the building was a true community.
There is a guide in every room to answer questions, and the lady in the kitchen is especially knowledgeable and engaging. Enter into the ground floor to buy a ticket and see the display rooms below with letters and other info on the timeframe, then go upstairs to visit the 5 room (plus 2 sleeping cubbies) tenement.
This place is ABSOLUTELY worth a visit in Glasgow if you like history.
S. M.
A well maintained testament home
Staff are some very friendly others not so.
Worth while popping in.
We have a national trust of Scotland membership and it's 100% worth going.
Having been with 3 adults and 3kids that would have been a bit underwhelming for the price to pay.
B. F.
A must to visit when in Glasgow because one of the things it does is rid the myth that only poor people lived in Tenements. This wonderful place not only does that but shows how Glasgow was way ahead with its proto apartments that are now all the rage.
Great guide full of information and so into it. Just an aside watch out for the great earrings on the girl in reception.
J. C.
Amazing museum showing an apartment lived in by one tenant from 1911-1965 with her furniture and mementos intact. A must see for history and architecture buffs interested in early 20thC working class life in Glasgow.
R.
Vey interesting place.
B. L.
An excellent window into early 20th century life in Glasgow. The guides are outstanding.
G. T.
Very interesting. A trip into the early 20th century. Definitely worth the visit.
K. M.
The closest you'll get to a time machine until doc goes mainstream with his Deloreon. It was great they haven't altered a thing only maintained it. There are things in this house from the 1700s it's a true gem in the city. My son aged 7 loved his visit and his grandad was reliving memories with every blink of his eyelids.
The staff were fantastic so engaging and passionate about the experience to be had there. They also asked grandad about his own lived experience as his father was a cool man who delivered can there in the 50s.
It's a really good place there are no barriers around things you are just asked to touch nothing so it can be kept pristine for as long as possible. There are so many things to explore and imagining how you would live in work there was a joy. Even though this is only a small 2 storey museum I will be back again to visit.
B. S.
Learning about history and traditions was nice. Feels very original and untouched. Essential for any tenement fan.
Original gas lightning meant it was dark in winter but brought a realistic feel to it. Wish there was a bit more to see in the dwellings.
The scale models on entry which shows the refurbishment over the years were super educational.
C. J.
Coming from Glasgow we've tried but never managed to visit. Till today. Go, it's great. The flat has many things inside from the belongings of woman who lived there from the early 1900's. It takes you back to times of my gran and her tenement flat. Lots to read and see. Amazed the way she formally wrote to her friends using their surname not their Christian name. As there are stairs up to the front door and also up the the main living area, not good for anybody on unsteady feet. We got in using my Nat Trust Scot card. It's not expensive. Chatted to the 2 ladies on the first floor who are full of interesting bits of information. There are modern toilets at reception.
Glasgow flat remaining in the past.
Go and visit
C. G.
This home is a time capsule purchased by the national trust. It is a view back in time to a simpler time but a time when there was so much uncertainty with war and changes to everyday life. Get to it from Sauciehall Street hop on hop off bus. Staff are very very clued up about the building and an excellent resource. Why read about recent history when you can go see it.
D. H.
Definitely worth hunting out . A great insight into a way of life which ended only a while ago.
S. M.
A really fine place to see how we used to live. Beautifully presented and preserved. It's a real house with a genuine connection to woman lived there for more than 50 years.
You can see and feel Glasgow's social history.
c. o. r.
Fascinating little house-museum, kept in the style of the original inhabitant and there are models and pictures and texts all about Glasgow tenements all around the place. It gets a bit busy at times and it's hard to view things with so many people there but Google maps are helpful with little tags in real time like 'busy as it gets' or 'quieter than usual' and you can use those to help schedule your sightseeing over the day, not forgetting to check the weather forecast of course! - but it's well worth a visit.
E. P.
Interesting place to see how tenement house were. It is also quite small so don’t expect too much
E. S.
Really cool to see how people lived back in the day, it's a bit self-paced, but there are volunteers who will answer questions for you. The whole thing takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes
A. L.
Worth a visit. A great insight into Tenement life. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
K. M.
This is a middle class tenement - I was expecting a poorer one (one room - 8 people type thing) - they do show plans for different types of tenements which was really interesting. The bed cupboard was insightful.
S. D.
Good place, full of history. Staff very enthusiastic , knowledgeable and love their job.
k. m.
Amazing place with great knowledgeable staff. If you live in a Glasgow tenement it's entirely worthwhile visiting here just to get a sense of why your flat is set out the way it is and what each individual areas original purpose was.
M.
Nice place with an amazing view but water pressure was so low that made it impossible to take shower.
R. W.
Unique exhibition! We are very fortunate that this remarkable time capsule has survived! On top of that, the volunteer guides are knowledgeable and enthusiastic!
I wholeheartedly recommend this place!
G. w.
Parking is a bit of an issue. Good to see the old tenement building but don't expect to be a long timr
a. c.
What a fabulous slice of history. The house is set out as it would have been when Agnes Toward was living there. The furnishings are preserved perfectly, lots of pieces of interest, especially if like me your grandparents were of a similar age to Agnes Toward. The staff were extremely helpful and informative, there was one lady who had grown up in Gorbals who gave us a great deal of information about her own family's life growing up in there and she was a real pleasure to speak to. Agnes Toward even inspired us to go and visit Largs as it was where she was lucky enough to go on holiday most years.
S. M.
Really interesting to see how people lived in the not so distant past.
Friendly and welcoming guides/volunteers.
Deserving of hidden gem status if not got this already.
Looked to be a small café on site but closed due to covid restrictions. Hopefully will reopen in due course?
l.
Very interesting small museum. Currently a great time to visit due to lack of crowds. Margaret, the volunteer guide, was great.
B. S.
Amazing step back in time. Very knowledgeable volunteers. We'll worth a visit.
K. H.
What a rare gem of find, small place but so fascinating and friendly staff on hand to answer questions, really easy to park out side
s. c.
A stunning time capsule into middle class tenement life in the early nineteenth century .
C. F.
Glad to have seen this at last, an apartment in an Edwardian time warp with an interesting history of one lady who lived there. So many of her personal letters to read! How times have changed re courtship! Highly recommend a visit!
C. B. (. G.
Such a great insight into understanding how life was in a Tenement House. With many of the original fixtures in place and details on the history and development of Glasgow this is well worth a visit. Very helpful and knowledgeable volunteers and staff on hand to answer questions, thank you.
P. W.
There is an admission fee but if you take out National Trust membership the fees are reduced
S. W.
Interesting visit. Helpful staff. Brought back memories!!
A. B.
A wonderful trip back in time which was a pleasure to visit.
T. S.
Pretty much how it used to look Victorian house in a tenement. Very interesting, and very helpful staff.
G. P.
Really interesting with expert guidance throughout our visit.
S. S.
A quick stop (~30min) with insightful knowledge and artifacts contextualizing life in the late 19th and early 20th century Glasgow.
D. K.
A brilliant afternoon was spent at the Tenement House. The guides are knowledgeable, very friendly and supremely engaging. The flat is fascinating. What a find!
G. D.
Amazing, small museum with so many original pieces,
S.
An interesting tour of how people lived in the Tenement during the late 19th century. There are guides on site to answer any historical questions that you might have.
A. R. B.
Well worth the visit and in particular reminded my wife and me of our 1967 holiday to an Islay
Cottage and sleeping on a Horse Hair Mattress
" Not very comfortable" / loved the irons lol.
J. S.
Great place to visit, highly recomended, full of the real history of Glasgow people
M. M.
Great visit to the Tenement House . Hadn't been since the additional flats had been purchased to expand the event- much improved. The organisers are clearly working hard to provide a covid-safe event...visitors should ( but don't always) play their part too by maintaining a safe social distance
A. G.
Very interesting and the room guides were excellent and informative. Had a great visit. Thank you!
L. H.
We went here from visitors from New Zealand who loved it. It was interesting and there was quite a bit to see. Reading a few of the less positive reviews I think you need to set expectations around what you can expect to see in a tenement house! The staff were very knowledgeable and one of our visitors really liked talking with them which made the visit for him.
D. M.
Interesting perspective on life in tenement houses from someone who lived their entire life there and journaled life in detail.
J. S.
I went here because it was free with my National Trust membership. I found the history of the home and the types of these buildings fascinating and the fact the home is so well-preserved is a good window into the past. In particular I appreciated the gas lighting as you can really feel the heat from the bulbs! The ground floor has an overview of the building and flat history as well as the woman whose flat this belonged to. The flat itself is very cozy. Took about 20 minutes-half inside with volunteers about, ready to explain further.
f. h.
Absolutely fascinating museum. Very well worth visiting. The volunteers are really friendly and knowledgeable.
A. P.
This flat has been kept to excellent standard very reasonable prices to enter . Just shows you how some people lived in those days .
She was a very lucky lady to have the money to live like this. A lot of Glasgow people were brought up the slums .
A. B.
So interesting to see. Evoked some memories as I lived in a tenement myself. Less fancy though! It's so well preserved A tribute to the National Trust. The custodian was great, very well informed. A great couple of hours spent.
R. B.
Very interesting. This is pretty much as it was lived in by the last occupant with a lot of her furniture and possessions. It's actually quite a substantial dwelling so not quite the picture you might have had in mind of a Glasgow tenement. They light the house with the original gas burners which is quite atmospheric but I had a bit of a headache when I came out. I wouldn't fancy being the guides who have to sit inside the house for long periods!
R. S.
Loved going back in time at the Tenement. Great knowledgeable, passionate staff showed us around and you really felt like you were entering someone's home not a museum. Even smelt old! If you are fascinated with history, architecture and people like me you will love it. My number 1 highlight from a weekend visiting Glasgow, and only £6, free for National Trust members.
D. H.
Loved this little tour, very interesting story full of history, would definitely recommend you go and visit.
H. G.
Interesting, so we'll preserved it's like going back in time.
m. b.
NT at its best Staff brilliant
Wonderful history of Agnes
S. C.
A fascinating small museum explaining the role of tenements in Glasgow, while the interior of the flat upstairs is locked and preserved as it was found, in the condition it was in for many years under the last occupant.
Very well worth a visit and an eye-opener to a surprisingly nice tenement flat with plenty of room.
Somewhere along the way, I thought back-to-backs and New York tenements but no. Visit and have your perceptions altered.
All the staff we met were really helpful. We really enjoyed this visit. Thank you to everyone there who helped on our first visit as members of The National Trust for Scotland.
L. G.
Fascinating look back to the early to mid 20th century, set up really well, volunteer staff very knowledgeable, especially the gentleman with the beard who gave us very useful information about other places to visit in Glasgow. Definitely worth a visit.
A. H.
I grew up in Glasgow always hearing stories from my mum and gran about living in the tenements and what it was like. This house really helped me to understand and visualise what it would actually have been like. It's incredibly well preserved and all of the furniture inside was owned by the previous occupant, Mrs Agnes Toward, so it really is like going back in time. I'd 100% recommend visiting here on a trip to Glasgow, it gives some great insight into tenement living and is so well preserved it'd be a shame not to see it.
C. P.
This is so far one of my favorite places in Glasgow. It's basically just a 4 room tenement house, but the history of the house and it's owner is really interesting. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and they welcome questions. Really cool history of what it was like to live through war in Glasgow. There is a charge for this museum but it is worth it if you are interested in walking through a tenement house in pristine historical condition. Nothing is roped off, but they are watchful as they don't eant you to touch anything. You can get up close and really get a feel for the house. I highly recommend it.
M. G.
Quite different from the normal National Trust house, this middle class tenement apartment is much as it was in the early 1900s and completely untouched since 1965. It gives a good idea what the best of the tenements were like - go to the People's Palace at Glasgow Green to see what a single-end apartment for the working class was like. Well worth a visit- give yourself an hour for a thorough look at everything.
A. T.
The staff were very helpful and answered all the questions i asked.
E. P.
We came during Glasgow Open Doors so it was free - idk if I would have paid the 7£ entry cost otherwise. A nice way to spend an hour or so. It was really busy since it was free so we had to wait for around 20 minutes before we could get in. The staff working there are passionate and knowledgeable and eager to jump in with a bit of history
A. C.
A fascinating building. Untouched and everything in its place as was. I really like that it still uses gas lighting, you can smell it as soon as you enter the building. I also love the way other properties in the stair are still privately owned and the Tenement House just exists in the block as it would have done when occupied. It is not as if the whole block has been purchased and mothballed. The National Trust have however purchased and converted one of the lower flats into an information / education area for school trips and a gift shop but the rest of the stair properties are just private residencies.
S. F.
Great snapshot into a previous time
A. M.
Well worth a visit to this time capsule! Staff knowable & friendly. 😃 …
J. H.
Great insight into tenement life. More of a middle class tenement with big kitchen range, hot water, bath and gas lighting. I was expecting to see a poor class tenement akin to that featured in 'Angela's Ashes' with one slopping out house for 14 flats!
Nevertheless a good insight, great friendly guides and highly recommended for a visit!
J. S.
Fascinating to see the tenement rooms left very much as they were lived in by Ms Toward. Also intriguing to learn about her life. The staff/volunteers were knowledgable and helped to bring it to life. Would be great to see more NationalTrust places that reflect ordinary lives though I assume they’re harder to acquire than huge stately homes.
C. D.
Really enjoyed, very interesting and staff were very friendly and approachable , went out of their way to explain everything about the house
J. B.
2nd Aug 2021: A notice on the door states that The Tenement House is closed except for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
I'll do my review after I've been able to visit it when it's open.
A.
Interesting place to visit - subverted my expectations of a tenement. Staff/volunteers obviously passionate about the museum.
J. H.
Visited this place on our weekend trip to Glasgow few months ago. The complex was maintained adequately to give the visitor a touch and feel of the 20th century life. I loved how the kitchen looked; way different than the modern gadget ridden kitchens we're used to
G. J.
Well worth a visit for social history awareness. It is an old tenement building maintained as it was as lived in by a Miss Toward. This was not a slum dwelling but there are details of the various strands of living in the 19th and 20th centuries. Very good staff / guides. You can probably do it in an hour.
c. t.
Lovely Experience. Highly Recommend it.
I. C.
We'll worth a visit
P.
Could only spend twenty minutes here so may not be a fair review. A more refined tenement than others I've seen. Staff seemed able to answer any questions. Good displays1880's to 1960s.
R. M.
Gives you a good picture how it was live on a mid class house. The place is small and maybe you could find the ticket little expensive. I enjoyed the visit and the history behind everything. Even the children with me enjoyed.
A. S.
So nice too find a National Trust property telling the story of ordinary people. The tenement has the feeling of a real home. It is informative and engaging. The friendly, helpful staff/volunteers make it complete.
C. L.
This is a fascinating depiction of tenement life and shows a side of tenement living of which I was unaware. This is most definitely not slum living. The lady who lived there would probably now be described as a hoarder, but the items she kept are now historically relevant. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and go out of there way to find out the answer to a question. The only word of warning, don't access the building from the very steep road. It is exhausting to climb up the hill, only to find you have to go down the other side to the bottom. There is an easier access on level ground.
C. M.
Brought back wonderful memories of my Gran and Papa's tenement in Greenock. Took me back 50 years along with memories of my brother and I sharing a box bed, reading stories and jokes. My English husband was amazed at how spacious it is inside.
It is an absolute crime to discover that short sighted, deep pocketed developers are still tearing these iconic and beautiful buildings down simply for a quick profit.
N. S.
It's a good museum but depending on how busy it might be you might feel a little bit cramped. The staff/ volunteers know what they're talking about however depending who's volunteering when you go you may find a couple of them to be unfriendly, I can't think of another word to describe, sorry.
D. C.
Great place to visit. The story behind the house and it's last tenant is fascinating. It's amazing how little it has changed allowing a real insight into what life was like for those living there.
T. R.
An interesting look at the domestic life in Glasgow tenements going back 100 years or so. The staff was friendly, helpful and informative. Glad we too the time to go.
J. G.
A rare survival from the early 20th century; an original tenement house that still looks like it did back then. Lots of historic items also survived. It's a small place, but we'll preserved and looked after.
L. B.
Really interesting museum.
H.
Very interesing visit. I was surprized that the living condition were not as bad as i expected. Very happy that the lady who bought the place in 1975 donated it to the communuty. Highly recommend for everyone to visit at least once. Was hoping for a tenement featured souvenir but none to be found here. Staff was very kind.
L. A.
Coming from that area of Glasgow I wanted to show my grandchildren what it was like way back then. Nostalgia trip for me and the grandkids loved it. Would really recommend the tenement house to anybody who is interested in the past.
M. D.
Very interesting! Many very Friendly guides. Enables you to understand how people lived at that time. Hundred years ago. Very much worth a visit.
E. M.
Got there later than planned but enthusiastic staff still showed me around and answered questions. Not about poor people (see People's Palace for that), one woman's home, her story, her things: fascinating
E. L.
Amazing to step back in time, free entry for Scottish National Trust card holders
R. M.
What a gem of a place if your interested in history this is the place to go looks normal from outside but once your inside you step back in time. I bet there are things in this tenement that remind you of your childhood . Well worth a visit you won’t be disappointed
M.
Small but bursting with fascinating objects that offer a window into a way of Glasgow life long deceased. Better to go in when there are few other visitors to avoid feeling crowded.
J. B.
Super interesting place where you can learn a lot about Glaswegian history. A little haunting too. Love it
R. A.
Loved it, step back in time. Worth a brief visit
L. S.
This is an excellent way to see how Glaswegians lived in the "old" days. Docents in every room were delightful and shared lots of fun information!
C. B.
So interesting to see how people used to live amazing to realise the house was untouched for so many years the staff were very friendly and helpful fantastic atmosphere not much in the way of parking space got to be really lucky to get parked close to the tenement building but definitely worth a walk if your a wee bit further away.
C. C.
Loved this visit! The room guides were so knowledgable and enthusiastic, plus the flat is well-preserved and fascinating. Well worth a mooch around.
T. S.
Fascinating history of actual people who lived there, in depth knowledge from the guides who brought it all to life with all questions answered and more! Great experience - well worth the visit, Paul and Tracey
M.
Really enjoyed The Tenement House but I don't think it would be worth £6.50, it's very small and doesn't take very long to get around it. Quite surprisingly hidden in the city centre though - good to stop by if you're members of the National Trust.
S. T.
A step back in time, the blackcurrant jam is well preserved! The lovely ladies who look after it were enthusiastic, knowledgeable and full of stories, well worth a visit.
K. H.
This was a very cool museum. I'd reccomend it for sure if your in Glasgow and looking for some interesting history. The guides were very friendly and knowledgeable.

W. I.
Stepping across the threshold of this early 20th century tenement house is like walking into a time portal. An intricately-detailed piece of social history and a hidden gem in the centre of Glasgow.
M. R.
An interesting and evocative glimpse into a personal life of a previous owner. A time caspule of social history showing what life was like for a middle class tennement dweller in Glasgow.
A. C.

R. P.
What a cracking little museum 😀 Thoroughly enjoyed learning about the people who lived here from the wonderful, knowledgeable staff.
We will be back soon with more family and friends 😀😀 …
W. R.
A fantastic snapshot of "real life" in the late 19th-early 20th century in Glasgow. Downstairs an exhibition and display cases take you through the concept and design of the tenements, and how they were used. Upstairs is the "house" as it would have been lived in by its last owner. Gas lighting, range stove, and original artefacts and furniture that used to belong to Miss Agnes Toward. The room stewards really help to make tenement life come alive. Great enthusiasm, and a deep knowledge of their subject. Highly recommended.
S.
Has been on list of places to visit for a long time. Well worth it. Would recommend to visit. It is a time warp and I am so glad it has been kept as it was.

fascinating place.pleased our eldest son what they were like as his great grandparents lived in one & he had a picture in his mind that they were slums.the 2 bedrooms ones were for middle class people .
H. M.
For me, it was nostalgic. I lived in houses without electricity and was familiar with many of the household items displayed. It is quite a small exhibition.
A. M.
Step back in time to 1920, it's a time machine!!!!

Passing by as part of a treasure trail and found it very interesting. My husband's family are originally from Glasgow and he found it to be very authentic.

It was good, but a bit pricy in my opinion, 7.5£ for an adult. Would suggest 5£. As the time you spend there is limited.
E. M.
So took me back, to my childhood, nice to show the family how life as changed.

A small but cozy place to visit, nice and helpful guides they do know a lot about the history of the tenements. I’d recommend to drop by when they’re open.
J. M.
It is really interesting to see how the people of Glasgow lived at the turn of the century. The National Trust allows us to enter into a lovely recreated world that looks, feels and even smells very authentic. You can only literally touch the exhibits in the single room downstairs though. The staff is very friendly and are happy to explain everything. The rooms are quite cosy and I could imagine, although life was hard those days, that people had also a great time. Visitors do have a great time.
J. A.
