Reviews of Tramway
A. S.
A wonderful place for art and inspiration. The exhibitions are always original and inspiring. Definitely one of the best, if not the number one art studio in Scotland.
P. N.
Great venue full of fantastic shows. Awsome sfaff
P. R.
Great Place To Be With The Citizens Theatre Friday Club To Watch Some Performance ON The Tramway Stage & Next Year IN 2023 I Perform ON The Tramway Stage With The Occasion Southside Group For The Return Of A Another Nice Mess For Laurel & Hardy
N. M.
One of my favourite places in Glasgow, a peaceful little haven. The gardens are so lovely, the garden staff are super friendly and helpful too. The exhibition spaces inside are awesome. It's great for families, disable people friendly. Lots of small events and classes are run here. I can't recommend the Hidden Gardens enough for stress relief and a nice place to connect with nature.
J. K. K.
Bit far fr town. But there is beautiful garden.
K. V.
Relaxing gardens and often great exhibits. Over the years have seen Claire Barclay, France-Lise McGurn and Norman Gilbert and all have been great
A. M.
Just had a wonderful afternoon at the Tramway perf centre. We saw Cyrano de Bergerac with Glaswegian accents and expressions. An excellent modern production by the Citizens Theatre.
Tramway is fully accessible with accessible toilets.
E. P.
We went to an interactive sensory art installation, but got told off for interacting with the one piece that was obviously interactive! There's no signs anywhere to say what you can and can't do, but after that you feel you can't touch/do anything!
D. G.
Nice enough community venue with pleasant staff. Long queues at the cafe/bar though and you're kind if stuck in a scheme as there's no pubs or restaurants in the vicinity either.
N. H.
Cool industrial vibe to this event space, with peaceful adjoining charity run Hidden Gardens and a good wee cafe for food & drink (including a beer). Staff are brilliant too, been here for TEDxGlasgow in 2016 and a wedding in 2017, always great craic about the place.
A. T. b. 3.
Cool space. The cafe is well priced and right next to the hidden garden which is also worth a visit
H.
It is very small, so don't expect to spend a long time here. The exhibitions are always interesting and thought provoking. The physical space itself is unique and quirky, with its colourful cafe and hidden gardens versus stark industrial exhibit space. For a free museum, there's nothing to complain about.
Random comment but toilets were labeled as "stalls" vs "urinals and stalls". I liked the non-gendered descriptions, although the man and woman stick figures were still pictured elsewhere.
Haven't eaten at the cafe but heard good things.
T. O.
The hidden gardens. Great for wheelchair access. Tramway accessible toilet could be a little better lay out wise but still doable x
A. G.
Amazing performance venue, watched Dance School of Scotland performance. Great wide stage giving performers plenty of room. Seats comfortable and close to stage.
S. O.
Visited a number of times and most recently 2 weeks ago and like the venue very much.
S. M.
Nice intimate venue, out the way but and bar prices are shocking.
B. S.
Incredible Nick Cave exhibition. Third time I've been here and every time the cafe is appalling. The service and organisation is very very bad the products not much better. Theatre superb avoid the cafe.
G. F.
I visited here to see some of the Sonic-a audio visual exhibition, but found some of the installations to be a bit underwhelming.
The Nick Cave Until exhibit was enthralling - I loved wandering around it.
The Zadie Xa exhibit was slightly strange - not sure what emotions it was designed to inspire in me.
The theatre is well kept and staffed by some enthusiastic individuals. What an asset to have in Glasgow!
B. H.
Cracking Scottish fayre served up within one of Glasgow's most impressive buildings. The 5pm market menu is fantastic value. 3 courses each and a bottle of wine to share for £50. The service was great and the food tasted fantastic and was fantastically presented. One of my favourite restaurants in the city.
M. G.
Brilliant as always. Never disappoints. Staff are amazing always welcoming. Fantabulous venue!!!
M. C.
Wonderful exhibition by Nick Cave. Unfortunately the tramway does not accept dogs :( Reconsider tramway...
J. C.
Visited for a lunch. As I know the venue can be busy with mothers and kids, for once it was quiet and a little more laid back.
A. K.
Attended the Sufi festival here. It's industrial but I guess no one's here for the building!
M. S.
We were here for a show put on by the Citezens theatre. Show was great and the seating was great even though we were late. We were put at the back which I didn't mind too much. But the lack of parking created problems, through the citizens website we were told to park at shields Road subway Park and ride but we were unaware of how far away this was. We then had to walk 20 mins to the Tramway. And as we were walking we saw countless street parking where we could have parked. Parking at the park and ride was not the best as we do not know Glasgow and surrounding areas.
C. P.
Went to nick cave exhibition ,very good
C. G.
Popped in before the theatre so one course only. Service was good. Food came quickly. Good selection. I liked it very much! Need to go back to give it 5 stars 🙂
A. I. A. G.
Awesome place amazing people loved the ambience.
G. M.
Easy to come and go even with mum who has poor mobility. Staff were great, just nice relaxed atmosphere not stuffy. Christmas Carol was awesome
B. R.
Awesome space showcasing world class art.
S. F.
Took a group of secondary school students here for a tour. The tour was great and the students loved exploring the garden.
A. F.
This is a great venue. Interesting free exhibitions, cool performances, lovely garden, big space for children to run around and books for them to read. I really wish the café was better. The opening hours are ridiculously short compared to the rest of the venue, the food is limited and there are no umbrellas for shade outside. It could be so much better.
K. M.
2 very good author talks in Aye Write, in very good venue. Well done the roving mic.
A. M.
No matter what you are there for, the Tramway is a lovely place to be for all ages & all walks of life. The hidden garden is stunning especially on a fine day with lots to see & friendly staff & volunteers happy to help. Child & disability friendly with excellent facilities making all welcome & a tranquil environment for all to enjoy.
a. m.
Great venue, really good acoustics and the seating layout is good with decent enough legroom. Air-con could do with some work though, when that place is full prepare to sweat. Drinks at the bar are the usual pricing for a venue like this, over the odds but not breaking the bank, there's not much of a selection, nothing caffeine free and no snacks available either.
N. L.
First visit here to see A Christmas Carol whilst the Citizens Theatre is being renovated. Nice place good view of the stage from the seats being all around in a stadium style. Good wine from the bar and adequate facilities too. Will definitely be back.
g. c.
Really enjoyed a show at the Tramway last night, a rendition of 'A Christmas Carol '
The Tramway was excellent! The stage was at audience level and very close and personal. The atmosphere was great.
The facilities were top notch, very quick turn around at the bar for a drink during the interval. Cannot fault for a show. I'm sure I will be back.
m. S.
come down support this local art exhibitions and theatre...such an amazing space and events going on...cannot reccomend it enough !
J. M.
Staff are always so friendly, have met so many people there. If you've never been, the hidden gardens are amazing. You should visit.
I. L.
This was a first for me at this well known Glasgow Arts venue in Pollock Shields. It was a bit quieter than I thought it would be . But I certainly liked its style and the coffee was not at all bad .Will certainly pay a return visit off an evening.
L. J. W.
Lots do need and do. Family friendly.
S. A. M.
Visited here to see Citizens Theatre production of the Duchess of Malfi. Outstanding production, a very sharp, modern interpretation. The venue itself is very interesting, an unassuming roadside presence hiding an industrial interior aesthetic with a delightful oasis of an accessible large courtyard garden to the rear.
L. B.
There was nout on when i went. Boo. But the back garden area is amazing, i may frequent more just for that. Peaceful area; paved, grassed and a nice mix of trees and quiet spaces. The cafe spills out onto it too so should be nice in summer. As for event spaces... I'll try again at some other point.
R. W.
Great place to see a show
K. C. G.
There is a exhibition on ATM and you absolutely must go see it. It's amazing .so much detail guaranteed something you have not seen before. It's free and the hidden gardens through the back for a coffee are a great chill space after it. This is a gem on the Southside.
M. E.
A great art gallery that you just would not know about unless somebody pointed it out to you. Take the train to Pollockshields East and turn right out of the station. Tramway is 20 yards on the right. Very family friendly and lovely gardens. Features very different interactive art. Great cafe and place to chill out in. Highly recommended.
P.
A really great theatre space with lovely gardens. There is always a diverse mix of shows and exhibits on making this an absolute gem of a theatre. The only thing that lets The Tramway down is the very poor Encore run cafe. The cafe is invariably dirty, and the food and drinks are over priced and poor quality.
T. A.
Really enjoyed the Nick Cave exhibition and Hidden Gardens.
G. M.
Glasgow is lucky to have this space and all it offers in it's programme and it's facilities. But for somewhere with such a distinctve contemporary art feel, it seems weirdly run to a corporate beat. However the cafe staff are amazingly pleasant. I just don't understand the approach to opening times.
L. N.
So many great experiences at The Tramway over the last five years. Many wonderful, strange, amusing, beautiful, any combination thereof, events. From installations to performances to things you don't even know how to describe, The Tramway (and The Hidden Gardens behind) is a place to visit over and over.
S.
Hands down my favourite arts space in Scotland!
Both to attend performances and to perform in this incredible building is amazing and it’s one of the things I look forward to when returning to Scotland.
Can’t recommend Tramway highly enough!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
S. M.
Lovely environment but very pricey for what was on offer. £4 for a fizzy drink and crisps???
Few lovely staff frankly working really hard while others left dirty tables for customers to clear themselves.
Outside tables could do with some TLC maintenance wise too.
r. d.
Fantastic venue! Can't say enough about the friendly staff, great service and how helpful they all were. Went to see The Dark Carnival.... One of the most enjoyable bits of the arts I've seen in a long time.
T. C.
Love the Tramway for the exhibitions and events. The hidden gardens are a very special quiet place in the city.Unfortunately the cafe has gone down hill and needs to up its game to attract back the crowds of mums and buggies and casual visitors of the past.
M. M.
The Nick Cave exhibition is visually stunning and well worth a visit. There are lovely gardens and a a tea/coffee cafe which does snacks and very good cakes. Nice friendly service
D. J.
Loved the exhibition by Rajni Perera today. It’s wonderful that the Tramway is open again (bookings only, for the exhibition). It felt very safe there. Afterwards, I walked round to the Hidden Gardens for a stroll - looking beautiful with the autumn leaves.
B. P.
First time I been to this place didn't expected such big theatre space. Big space for theatre and shows.
J. C.
Stumbled on this place by accident. Cool and slick open space with galleries and a cafe. Nice place to sit and when the sun's out the 'hidden' gardens are pleasant to wonder in. There's a family vibe on the weekends- decent coffee too
N. L.
I used to really enjoy visiting the Tramway to use the cafe and let the kids run around the grounds.
However, the selection and quality of food and drinks available feels limited, with no meals on offer after 4pm. The gardens now feel tired, with some sections closed off, apparently for refurbishment.
R. S.
The Tramway is a great arts space. Currently it is where the Citizens performs as its own theatre undergoes a major refurbishment. We saw Nora A Doll's House, a masterful reworking of Ibsen's classic by Stef Smith. It was a magnificent production - the direction, acting, set and lighting all excellent. And the main performance space of the Tramway as ever played it's part.
J. P.
Lovely space for art and events. The "Hidden Gardens" at the rear are a wonderful oasis of peace
C. T.
Wonderful space, when used properly it’s incredible. Nick Cave’s exhibition currently is really really something, go see it for yourself. Staff are all really friendly, and there’s a cafe for a bite or drink.
A. Y. G.
I've seen some of the best performances and exhibitions here. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The cafe serves coffee.
J. R.
As the other reviews here are mainly about food and drink and children, I feel it's important to also say that Tramway is mainly a fantastic venue for ARTS - visual, theatre, dance, music - take your pick, you will at most times find something fantastic in this treasured venue. Go be curious, you might just discover something you enjoy!
E. R.
Hidden garden is lovely and the exhibit there just now for kids is good, although the move/sound/touch exhibit isn't intuitive for kids that can't read yet. Cafe is fab.
D. B.
Great venue with unusual shows. Plus they indulged two thirty year olds who wanted to do the kids puzzle sheet. Lovely vibe!
v.
Clients loved this place downside ,parking is terrible
A. C.
As a family we love this place. Plenty of room for buggies and high chairs. I think the Tramway is probably one of the most kid-friendly venues in Glasgow as we discovered when we fitted six adults and four babies around a couple of tables without a problem. Add in the Hidden Gardens at the back for little ones to run around and it's a great place for a bite to eat.
The service is great and although the range of food isn't anything amazing to write home about (usual selection of paninis, burgers and salads) but the portions are a good size and the value is pretty great.
C. 3.
cafe is disappointingly overpriced. £1.60 for a bottle of still water that's barely cold? for people like myself on a fixed income it's simply not cost effective to spend that kind of money every week...
N. W.
There are always some fantastic events, exhibitions, plays and festivals offered to us. Lovedctye Sufi Festival today. We are lucky to have this wee gem of a place on our doorstep!
F. K.
Very interesting theatre, not your everyday venue. Really enjoyed the performance I came to view and would definitely love to come again!
E. G. V.
Bestest of the best. Good place for exhibitions and performances. The garden is lovely too. The food is nit the best. All sandwiches made with grated cheddar cheese :( and overpriced
M. N.
Great wee place. Welcoming, clean and good exhibitions
K. S.
Brilliant space for anything creative! Accessible for wheelchair users & occasional BSL interpreted events too. Delightful garden area, great for kids.
J. C.
A wee hidden gem. Was a really sunny day when I visited so managed to really enjoy the garden at the back. Sat outside for food which was good and enjoyed the art exhibition inside.
A. G.
An interesting place that's always experimenting with art in all its many forms. The cafe and secret garden are delightful additions to round out one of the more unique places in Glasgow.
s. j.
Would have had 5 stars but for the cafe, just so incredibly slow, lunch break gone woosh! By the time I got served, but that's not a dig at the staff, they are all lovely
E. C.
Good soup! Coffee could be better but the staff are so nice so it makes up for it :D Great knitting club meet up there too!
P. H.
Some very inspirational and wonderful art installations. Very probably the coolest place to see and be seen in Glasgow. Glasgow, along with Barcelona, is of course the coolest city.
D. W.
Really nice and well kept building. Good staff. Went to see one of the best installation pieces I've ever seen there, nick caves.
B. S.
Everything you could want from a local theatrical venue. Good entertainment, good acoustics, helpful staff and pleasant communal space. Definitely worth a visit.
r. l.
One of Glasgow's very best, with beautiful gardens at the back for when the art is all too much for you
A. M.
Plenty of things to do for all ages, took in a visit to see my son perform on drama sketches and great to see them giving young actors the chance to perform, bar prices reasonable and staff very friendly
e. o.
Great staff at the Tramway, beautiful venue, accessible for anyone with mobility problems and easy to get to from tge train station. Overpriced bar however almost taking one star off.
L. L.
LOVED this place! Quaint little cafe beautiful gardens, outdoor patio and very cool repurposed building. They also have arts and craft classes!
Q.
Really cool art gallery in the south side, worth a visit. The hidden gardens are also nice if the weather is not too bad, and there is a cafeteria downstaits with lots of room for groups and families
I. D.
A great venue. I had never been to this before and I was very impressed. There is a lack of parking though. I would advise arriving early to get parked easily.
A. G.
Great exhibition place. Reminded me of a warehouse but it's perfect for exhibitions. We went to see a play and it's was great. It also has a café that serves food.
T. D.
Excellent afternoon, theatre is modern studio layout, Citizens production of Christmas Carol. Quite misleading title as there is no one called Carol in the play. The writer of this story is unlikely to have much of a career!
I. G.
The art instalation is beautiful well worth a visit.
S. G.
Fantastic. No art on mondays for people like me who want to go to an art gallery and don't want to be interrupted my those silly shapes and poinient thoughts and opinions. Would go again, only on Mondays though.
D. R.
The Dark Carnival, great yarn but spoiled a bit by the music being too loud; it hurt. OK venue as the Citz temporary home but could improve on the coffee!
D. H.
There was not the event I expected - I have got the wrong information, but a film was shown. Unfortunately only in sign language and with music.
K. V.
Tramway has a relaxed community feel. Great building and garden. World class exhibitions. This is how Glasgow does a gallery. Oh yes and it is free to get in.
A. S.
Lovely place for the whole family to enjoy. Plenty of spare for the children to play. Good quality coffee and delicious cakes!
d. b.
Good show. Lots of enthusiasm and musical skills. Recommended
S. S.
Went to see The Citz production of Cyrano de Bergerac which was excellent.Good venue, seats comfortable.
There was quite a queue at the bar which took some time to clear.
S. C.
The Hidden Gardens at the back of the Tramway is a piece of tranquillity in a busy part of Glasgow. Once you step behind their walls you would never know there was so much going on just on the other side.
C. C.
Enjoyed the panto but can't wait for the Ccitizens to open up again.
A. A.
First journey and marvelous experience
P. C.
Great exhibition's team, thank you Stuart, Malcolm, Paul Sorley, and the other two. Your help was appreciated.
F. C.
Great wide open space for kids to run around. We attended the arts and crafts workshop with toddlers and had a fab time.
I. H.
Very nice venue, saw" a christmas carol " was excellent. Nice cafe and waiting area. Good for parking outside building.
A. S.
Real nice venue
f. r.
Was there for an event we commissioned. Top notch venue and nice presentation spaces. No parking immediately adjacent but spaces at local eateries
A. M.
I went to see A Christmas Carol at the Tramway because The Citizens Theatre is being renovated. A different experience but great nonetheless. Would recommend!
C. C.
My son loved his morning with the Scottish ballet. Its so great to get to do this so young as he is only 3 years old.
J. O.
Such a nice place for Art. I have gone there many times to see installations and shows, and it is totally worth it if you like the alternative artistic scene. A joy for the senses.
A. F.
Strange, other worldly and engaging, in different ways, two exhibitions, by Nick Cave and Zadie Xa. Both worth the short train journey from Central to Pollokshields East. Both memorable, but in different ways.
A. E.
Amazing arts centre presenting lots of great art. Cafe closed really early (5.30pm ish) on our visit and there was no where to get a drink!
J. K.
It offered a great space for the light show on Halloween however, the lack of organisation really let it down.
G. M.
Great venue, fond.memories of what it used to be
n. a.
Great atmosphere. A fab cafe and gardens. Lots to do and see. Brilliant for children.
F.
We went here instead of the citizens during repair and wow! It was really nice. Well done with the space it had.
T. S.
Great venue, only complaint is the system they have in place at the bar where you queue to order your drink and then have to join another queue to pay.
J. M.
Great venue. Cool art exhibitions and perfect for seeing Andy and Bob do Athetico Mince live.
C. D.
I went to see the Nick Cave exhibition, which was interesting and colourful- a must see! The cafe was ok, with the service being a tad slow.
M. R.
Loved the hidden garden, musical umbrellas and Nick Cave exhibit. Looking forward to next visit!
n. b.
Always plenty on activities on for kids. Lovely cafe and the hidden gardens are great for the kids to have a wee run around in.
l. l.
Friendly staff! Lovely cafe' and great shows for all ages. Has disabled toilets as well.
M.
It's one of the better exhibition spaces in Glasgow due to size of the main hall. Must be daunting for any artist really 😁
C. M.
Always something interesting on. Lovely hidden gardens at the back and some beautiful cakes and snacks in the cafe.
P. B. B.
Excellent ambiance, nice cafe (recommend the vegan sausage rolls ) and fantastic play - The Duchess of Malfi.
