Reviews of West Highland Museum
R. S.
One of the most beautiful museum I’ve ever been. It gives a clear overview of the history of the highlands - focusing on the rise of the Jacobites and a room dedicated to the green Barrett’s and their role in WW2. Would definitely recommend to anyone who has only just a small interest in history.
S. M.
Lovely little free museum, a bit cramped inside but full of interesting artefacts. Favourite room was the commando room, with a great short film about them training and some freaky interesting objects. Friendly staff, would recommend.
N. T.
Greeted by the friendliest person in Fort William, who gave us a very informative introduction to everything there including the history of the building itself.
Wonderful exhibits, and beautiful remnants of the history within Scotland.
And it's all free bar one room but that's only £3.
Would definitely recommend and come again!
P. S.
Good wee museum. Different rooms for different topics. Worth a visit
N. B.
A great museum showed a lot of the local history one that I would recommend. They also catered for little people providing an Xmas elf hunt which allowed in my view for a more calm visit due to interspersing it with the history of the area.
R. M.
A place that shows in history of West Scotland. Amazing stories and exhibits take us back in time. Fantastic and kind staff. I recommend it for the whole family
J. A.
Excellent museum, small but varied and interesting, free entry and friendly helpful staff.
A.
Really adorable place! Small but nice and warm-welcoming! It was a pleasure to speak with people.working there and knew a little bit more about Fort William! Hidden picture is so cool!
D. P.
Small museum at the centre of Fort William. The staff is very sweet, and museum quite interesting with many historical items and stories from the Jacobite to WWII :)
L. C.
The place is full of information about Scottish history. The exhibition is small but it is very good. I didn't understand why it is free as it deserves a payment which would help the museum grow and prosper. From my part, I would gladly pay.
M. P.
Great museum with several rooms of historic artifacts covering the Second World War, the Jacobite Uprisings and the geology of the area, and many periods between.
Some details are a little difficult to read. Larger type and better lighting would help.
Surprising that it was free to enter as the quality and quantity of historic items and information would normally warrant an entrance fee.
Quite a little gem. Do visit and allow a couple of hours to get the most out of it. 😎 👍
R. M.
A very worthwhile visit, we spent about an hour here but you could easily spend longer it's very interesting. The volunteers are also really friendly helpful and with no admission fee what's not to love. Though we did give a donation.
P. E.
Absolutely amazing place. Lots of items to view with plenty of information and a lots of history. Highly recommend a visit
K. B.
Great place with lovely people who runs it! I'm very interested in Jacobite history, so the exhibition about the Jacobite was an exciting place for me :)
M. G.
Brilliant museum. Amazing collection of artefacts, with especially rare and fascinating Jacobite memorabilia. Loved the room plan and installations. Staff were very welcoming and helpful.
P. A.
I love little local museums like this and this one is fantastic. Great collection of interesting stuff well displayed in an old building and staffed by friendly staff and to top it all it is free to enter. Only downside is that the toilets are currently closed to maintain covid safety. Splendid way to pass an hour while in town.
S. N.
Had a fantastic morning in this museum. The wee woman and 2 gentleman were very informative and it was a pleasure to meet them . The history here brought a lump to my throat. A must visit.
M. A.
Very thankful to have visited this museum.
The first thing that made me love the place is the staff, a very nice man, I think the owner or manager of the place gave us a very quick tour (we only had 15min to spare) based on our history interest - the jacobites & Bonnie Prince Charlie. He was so passionate and kindly gave us fun facts and explanations about what kind of artillery was used during combats and explained us about the story of the masterpiece of the museum and why it is painted as it is. I won’t tell you more because you should go !!
S. M.
Great place to check out if you’re in the area. Very informative about Scottish history AND it’s free! But after walking through, you’ll probably want to make a donation because, a) the exhibit they put on is great & definitely deserves payment for, and b) donations help a small exhibit like this stay alive and continue to be available for everyone!
C. K.
Everyone gets a friendly welcome at this lovely local museum. I was there to see their exhibits about the 1745 Jacobite Army and there is plenty to see. The embroidered waistcoat they have is stunning and the 'secret portrait' on a tray is fascinating. I also enjoyed the geology exhibit and learnt a lot about the mountains around Fort William. Thank you this was well worth visiting.
P. C.
A fabulous visit to the museum in Fort William. We were greeted by a volunteer at the door who informed my sons and I of what we would see during our visit. We had a great walk around...even kept the boys entertained.
J. G.
Free entry with optional donation. Lovely greeting by friendly staff. History of the area - natural, historic and some mountaineering. Would love a bit more about the history of mountaineering but that aside very nice to have a wander round.
K. B.
Lovely welcome from the man on the door. We unfortunately had to return to the car before having a full look around the museum (ticket was running out).
Highly recommend anyone visiting Fort William good here for a few hours to appreciate the rich history of the Highlands. Will return one day to finish off!

We randomly found this museum while in Fort William. It was one of the best little museums we have seen yet. It's a bit random in what it contains but the history and items you can see is incredible. Worth stopping in. It's free, but definitely worth donating after walking through the museum!
A.
Lovely little museum. Well-made exhibition that covers a lot, starting at recent military history, preserved animals and Jacobite tradition. And it's free! We spent about an hour here.
K. N.
What a wonderful gem in Fort William! The building has character and the exhibit rooms are well done. We especially loved the bird/St Kilda room and the one with the secret picture of the Bonnie Prince Charlie.
U.
Excellent museum crammed full of historical artefacts. Staff very friendly and helpful too. Wee bit slow service at till as staff have to write down every individual item you purchase. Nice clean, tidy and well laid out exhibition though.
R. M.
Nice little museum, had some interesting exhibits on the local area. Staff were very friendly on arrival, very attentive to other visitors there too. Not very big but with a little visit.
O. G. 2.
Excellent, kids loved it! It's not what you'd expect - far from huge museum but nice, cosy and with plenty of interesting exhibits, very helpful staff. And... it's free!
N. P.
Great little museum and well worth a stop if you are in the area. Admission is by donation. We learned a lot about the history of the Highlands and the Jacobite rising. There are some really interesting artifacts that are worth the visit.
M. S.
One of the best places you can visit in Fort William. especially if you have kids. Consider 4 to 6 hours if you want to do a complete visit. You can enjoy the especial shows and exhibition there.
A. A.
Lovely, eclectic museum with an old fashioned vibe. A random assortment of Highland memorabilia, but it works to paint a picture of the diverse features of the region. Located in a beautiful old building below Ben Nevis.
L. G.
Tons of information and history in a well curated small museum with incredibly helpful staff. Well worth the admission price :) it's free. I'd say a must.
J. C.
Admission is free, but they accept donation. Very well done, lots to see even though it's a fairly small museum. You can tell it's a passion project. Don't miss if you're in town!
M. G.
Beautiful museum! It's free, it's a great balance between information and actual things you can see, and it's about the place where you are and it's history. Loved it!
C. T.
It's a small but well thought out museum. There's a surprising number of exhibits in it. The volunteer staff and both very knowledgeable and friendly.
M. B.
Staff were very welcoming. The museum provided lots of information on the local area. I found it informative and it broadened my knowledge, particularly the role the area played during the second world war.
