What a beautiful cathedral! Went there for some short sightseeing after a full day of work meetings in Gloucester and was not disappointed! The cloisters are dreamy, as well as the main body of the cathedral. Stained glass is impressive, and the architectural details too! Fully recommended for a Harry Potter-themed visit!

Cathedral was beautiful and all staff we spoke to were friendly and informative. We were allowed to leave our pushchair with a staff member while accessing the Whispering Gallery and interactive pieces. Lots of things were clearly labelled with the history or back story. We didn't take a tour as we were short of time but they were frequent and seemed really good so will do that next time.

Wow, what a stunning cathedral. Beautiful stain glass windows and details to the building. We found some areas where Harry Potter was filmed too. They had some fun activities on the upper level which would be fun for adults and children. Well worth a visit.

Fantastic cathedral. Really enjoyed exploring the cathedral. Top to bottom. A couple of hours well spent. Free entry but donation given as it is really a tour stop visit. Well worth it if you like visiting churches or places of worship.

Absolutely stunning place not to be missed if your in the area. 5.30pm every evening the choir sings even song its like attending a royal wedding the sound the small choir makes ....incredible!!!!!!!! The cathedral is the best I have ever been too. And of course the parts where Harry potter was filmed a nice little treat too.
Perfection x

Beautiful building and a wonderful history. A bad start with the lady who greeted us asking autistic people if they were exempt from wearing a mask. I thought we were visiting a Holly place not going to a fancy dress party. Next the lady launched into a begging for money routine. Holly Harry and the Rev. Ron were the first images to greet us closely followed by an effigy of the great god Dobbie the house elf! Things could only get better and they did. Jesus was mentioned and his love for us and the world started to appear. I could almost believe that Christianity had not been completely forgotten here. Suffering to seek God is not a new thing and the problems here were mild. Perhaps one day the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ will be the first thing we see and hear when we enter and not proclamation of the misinterpretation of evil men. Perhaps preaching Christianity might be adopted as a fund raising technique as the Baptist Church do? Wonderful friendly cafe too.

Spectacular place, beautiful architecture and a great history. Definitely worth visiting, great way to spend a few hours in Gloucester city, especially if you’re a fan of Harry Potter.
It’s awesome to see the corridors and courtyard, definitely makes you want to watch the films again.

Personally, I felt it was the most beautiful cathedral in England. The moment you see the balanced Gothic architecture, you will sigh. In addition, the surrounding cityscape is well maintained, which makes the church stand out more. Once inside, stained glass is stretched all over. The saints are drawn solemnly without being too flashy. At least I do not recommend to play cricket in front of this huge stained glass. You will be irreparable. Also, the corridor is highly recommended. The white owl didn't fly to me, but I was able to go to Hogwarts. It's very beautiful because it's clean everywhere, and there are a lot of churches that have nothing to do when you go inside with a high entry fee, but I think you should definitely see it once.

We paid a little more for the guided tour and Carolyn was fantastic. Very knowledgeable about the history. The cathedral was amazing and very much worth the visit. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you will absolutely recognize some of the hallways.
R. E.
Our long weekend in Gloucester included our first time visiting the cathedral.
The Cathedral is very impressive with stained glass windows wherever you look. Lots to look at and read.
Entrance was free of charge but you are encouraged make a donation. We'll worth a visit
m. s.
Tour of Cathedral was excellent, hats off to our tour guide Nick, informative, knowledgeable and witty. I'm not a religious person but the architecture is breathtaking along with Nick's info, it's well worth the £5.50 fee.
Well Done Nick, thoroughly enjoyed, even though he did not divulge the Welsh Rugby teams name.......

Visited the Cathedral on a chilly winters' day, the place was still as magical as ever and with a lot less of the normal crowds. The stained glass windows, high pitched ceilings and stunning stonework detail of this place is amazing, a true place that you can marvel over for hours at a time. Each time I have visited, I've found something new to stare at in our amazement.
Well worth a visit!
J. T.
Absolutely stunning building with great volunteers. Especially John who I had a lovely chat with and who was brimming with information about the features of the cathedral.
The cloisters are gorgeous and a must see.
L. C.
It is a beautiful Cathedral, me and my girlfriend have been very luky as we visited on Sunday and there was the choir singing, has been a beautiful experience and the atmosphere is magical, I know they shoots some scene for Harry Potter movie here. I highly recommend a visit.
D. K.
This is very much a worthwhile stop. This is probably the most grant cathedral I've been in and it took a lot of restraint to not test out the reverberation. If you look around, you will find layers to the building as its architecture progresses from Norman to Gothic to Victorian (I think). This is most noticeable when you first walk in and stair up at the ceiling. The halls of this building were used for a few of the Harry Potter movies which is cool. After you come out, you should walk around the perimeter of the building and look at all the grotesque gargoyles.
D.
A beautiful Gothic & Romanesque Cathedral with abbey foundation origins from 678/9, dedicated to Saint Peter. The Cathedral displays stunning stained glass-windows including the earliest of golf images. Harry Potter fans will recognise the interior of ‘Hogwarts’ filmed in at least three of the famous films! 🎼🎥🎞⛳️
W. O.
Spent a really interesting couple of hours here with my family (10 and 8 year old).
The volunteers were really welcoming, and we enjoyed exploring the beauty and the history of the building.
Make sure you check out the whispering gallery and the interactive displays upstairs.
M. L.
What a wonderful way to spend a few hours. A beautiful landmark, with a very in depth history, from the founding monks, to the first day at Hogwarts. Highly recommend!
C. E.
Wonderful cathedral. I can hardly believe we have lived in the area for 4 years and only just visited it recently. I think we spent 2 hours looking around but could have spent far longer.
Tips: It shut very promptly at 5pm, surprising a few late visitors.
Staff were friendly and helpful and there were tours available.
3 x services held here a day.
There are lifts inside, allowing access for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
While there was no fixed entry fee, a donation of £5pp was suggested.
I hope to return soon.
G. B.
I hadn't expected the Cathedral to be as interesting as it was! Lots to see and do and explore which the children lived and the adults found interesting.
Well worth visiting (and making a donation).
J. H.
Iconic historical venue. Took 400 yrs to build. Finished 1478. Has seen some serious stuff.
The cloisters make it more miserably relevant with Harry Potter, but there’s mountains of history here.
N. H.
An interesting Cathedral with the tomb of Edward II towards the back of the building.
Half the Cathedral is Norman so plain but after Edward II was laid in the Cathedral his son wanted it more grand so the ceiling at the back was more intricate.
Entry is by donation (recommended £5 each) but the crypt tours are optional extras with a flat fee of £3.50 each. This was well worth it, as you saw under the Cathedral, not open to the public and had some interesting information from the guide. If interested asked about thr tours at the welcome desk, to find out about timings.
There is a cafe on site. Parking was in a public car park (opted for one at the Quays and walked through Gloucester checking out other historic buildings and blue plaques, including Beatrice Potter and the wooden clock figures).
R. N.
Beautiful place to visit! Friendly well informed staff. If you're a Harry Potter fan, make sure you visit. Take in the Whispering Gallery and the Tom Denny stained glass windows.
M. V.
Stunning Cathedral.
The outside and the inside is the most breath taken Gothic design.
Its free entry but voluntary donation and if you pay for other Cathedrals to entry this is a must visit and yet due make a donation as its proper amazing.
Picnic or sitting outside during sunny days would be a very nice day trip.
They have a kitchen inside so if you are hungry you could be in luck here!
Enjoy!!
I. F.
Where Romanesque, Gothic, Perpendicular & Victorian architecture collide!
A beautiful cathedral, with tours, including the Crypt and the tower available.
A must if in the vicinity.
C. C.
A beautiful Cathedral with so much history spanning over 900 years. Some film fans will recognise the corridors from the Harry Potter films as those scenes were shot here.
K. N.
Beautiful cathedral with incredible architecture inside and out. Attentive staff/guides/volunteers who are always ready to point you in the right direction. Lots of interesting exhibits within the building itself as well as a lovely outdoor space with fountain and well
S. R. T.
A fascinating place to visit and rich in history. This is where some of the scenes from Harry Potter were shot and some of the greatest movies and series. Where legends and great minds were buried
M. 1.
Allegedly the Cathedral was built in donkey's years but this does not mean that it was built at that time, in fact, it was several small one-story buildings, and it began to raise almost half a century later.
The Cathedral has a great history and that's what one would expect for so old building but if you are after an exclusive, then you will not find exclusives there this is a typical product of its era, both in size and decor. The collections contain some artefacts (some of them underwent restoration, in other words, in the case of stone carvings, a banal replacement), arouses inquisitiveness gallery reproduction of books, functioning organ, and worthy choir. The cathedral has a certain popularity among filmmakers, as an example was used in the filming of Harry Potter. Interesting fact, the author of the anthem of America worked as an organist of the cathedral.
The building itself does not capture the spirit, but it justifies the time spent on it.
L. P.
An absolutely fantastic building. Beautiful stained windows, lots of interesting artefacts and history. A trip up the tower us definitely worth a visit
D. W.
We just visited this fabulous cathedral on the 12th December to see and hear their Carols On The Hour. Highly recommend a visit. Last year we got the chance, because of Covid, to visit when the cathedral was deserted (I've included some photos from that visit here too) The cloisters feature heavily in the Harry Potter films so, if they look familiar to you, that is why.
B. J.
Free entry, but donations are encouraged. Very pretty! Quite astounding how beautiful and old it is! I just wish I could've played the organ.
M. E.
We were made to feel very welcome on arrival and then throughout. The best experience I've had visiting a cathedral in this country. A beautiful place too.
E. P.
Really beautiful cathedral, volunteers were lovely and friendly. Make sure to donate if you can when visiting. Café was very busy so we went home for lunch instead.
S. H.
I've not been inside yet but this cathedral is amazing it took from 1089-1499 to be built architecture for back then just amazes me, It's set in beautiful well kept grounds, plenty of seats to just sit and take it all in, I can't wait to see inside especially if the outside is anything to go by, Worth a visit definitely
So 09/09/2022 went to the cathedral for first time it's beautiful inside and going again.
As of tomorrow from 10am till 5pm there is a book to sign for Her Majesty the Queen
N. M.
This is a real national treasure £5 voluntary contribution to get in but a fantastic cathedral. Amazing refurbishment, lots of info. Worth a visit to the city just to see this place. Incredible and an amazing piece of history.
J. S.
Wow what a beauty a stunning cathedral. And there are some areas where Harry Potter was filmed. One of the best cathedral every visitor must visit
J. H.
Dating back to 1089, this cathedral church has been used for the filming of Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes. A former Benedictine monastery, it was visited by Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn and it houses the tomb of Edward II, who was murdered in nearby Berkeley Castle. There is also a statue of Edward Jenner, who was the first person to develop an effective vaccine. His vaccine lead to the world-wide eradication of smallpox.
R. W.
What a wonderful place to explore over a 1000 years of history, if you are religious it is an iconic place for worship, if you are into architecture prepare to be blown away by the craftsmanship of the masons ( among others) who built this wonderful ediface, I visited today expecting to while away an hour or so and ended up spending over three and a half hours exploring this fantastic building. The setting is magical, peaceful, and awe inspiring. And I will be visiting again in the future.
이.
Good place~~Volunteers are kind and the cathedral is well managed. It's free, but donations are recommended. You can buy a catalog at the entrance.
r. p.
Such a wonderful cathedral. We had access to the upstairs which shows the architecture above the crossing amazing. Of the cathedral's I have visited this one's cloister is the best.
N.
Absolutely stunning cathedral. Used in the Harry Potter films. Well worth a visit. Free entry, but they do suggest a 5 pound donation per adult.
L. C.
Absolutely stunning place!
We had time to explore on our own before taking on Ann's free guided tour - she was so knowledgeable and shared with us the most amazing details. What a memory! And I really enjoyed the Harry Potter special mentions. Would definitely recommend!
H. N.
Amazing building so much history and beautiful stained glass windows.
Lunch in the Monks Kitchen was also good sandwiches with side salad and crisps.
G. N.
Spectacular, fascinating and atmospheric. As sometime who doesn't have much reverence for religion, it was a pleasantly surprising experience to walk around gazing at the geometry of the architecture, admiring the intricacies of the construction and stained glass windows, occasionally exchanging words with other visitors who were either equally impressed by or more knowledgeable about the place. Those who like to feel that there is some validity to the concept of a soul, or even those who are simply interested in history, this will probably be a place from which the lessons and memories taken will make the any effort required to visit seen worthwhile. Highly recommended.
L. M.
I would highly recommend the tower tour. The volunteers that lead the tour are very knowledgeable and if you time it right, you can watch the bells chime.
P. S.
Amazing tranquil historical building,I have visited many times, but every time I go I see something new, very uplifting place to visit and so big
K. H.
Wow! You've got to go and see this magnificent building. A number of TV programmes and films have shot scenes here, the one that really stands out is Harry Potter!!!
K.
Lovely place to visit. We were lucky enough to hear the choir rehearsal and thier singing was just brilliant could hear it all the way through our walk. The gardens inside and out are just beautiful. Staff are so helpful and friendly
G. I.
We were blown away by this Cathederal. It was a spur of the moment visit so we got there around 3.30pm. Evensong was scheduold for 4.30pm which gave us time to explore the Cathederal and buy coffee and a sandwich in the cafe. The food was excellent. Evensong was a magical experience made even better by the awesome organist. All in all a thoroughly satisfying visit and we wouldn't hesitate to revisit again in the future.
M. R.
An amazing Cathedral. Entry by donation this is stunning inside and out. The whispering gallery is amazing. Don't miss the tomb of Edward II.
C. S.
A magnificent building. Warm and friendly welcome. I thought the corgi trail lots of funhhan excellent idea for kids (and adults 😁).
J. M.
Truly beautiful cathedral steeped in history and fantastically maintained . Entrance by donation is unbelievable compared to rest of Europe !!

J. W.

A. H.

A very beautiful cathedral with a rich history. Perfectly preserved, and all the staff were nice ❤️ I bought me a cross from the holy land and angel crystals for a very minimal price, their souvenir shop was not overpriced 🥰
C. M.
Immense, a real sense of atmosphere, beautiful cloisters, ancient chapels and carvings, modern glass windows, tomb of Edward 2nd, a long trough where Monks used to wash their hands before dinner! and a cafe with really delicious food. Free to enter but nice to give a donation as these old buildings are so expensive to maintain.
C. C.
Went here today really nice place to visit and it was ware Harry potter was filled in here in the great hall lovely place well worth the train journey from Bristol to Gloucester lovely cafe here to good food and value for money plenty of shops to
K. S.
Magnificent cathedral to be visited by everyone for various reasons. It's a must for all the Harry Potter fans as the Cloisters were used in 3 films to show Hogwarts School.
In 1216, England's only coronation outside the Westminster Cathedral took place here when the 9 years old Henry III was crowned.
King Edward II who was believed to be murdered is burried here too. His son, Edward III, later built an eloberate thomb which attracted lots of visitors to the cathedral.
It is believed that the king Henry VIII treated this cathedral differently, not giving orders to destroy it, for the simple reason that some of his ancestors were burried here.
I was surprised to learn that the first abbess of the cathedral ruled from the cathedral a religious house of men and women from 679-710. She was the king's sister, Kyneburga. Saw a statue of her too.
For modern art admirers, there is a modern blue glass windows to look at.
We liked the 1350 unusual orchestra of angles on the ceiling in the most sacred part of the cathedral, the Quire.
H. s. H.
Wow 🤩
It was an amazing trip to Cathedral with proud history, world’s largest window 22 height amd 12 width installed in 1350’s And exceptional thing is - entry tickets are totally free and staff is quite interactive and eager to share information.
Highly recommended 🙌🏼
G. R.
Impressive building, a must if you're in Gloucester. We visited on a Sunday and had to wait a bit for the service to finish, which gave us the opportunity to circle it on the outside and enjoy the beautiful architecture and craftsmanship of the stone masons. Once in, you are in awe with the detail all around you, magnificent. There is no entry fee, donations welcomed. You can buy a guide, which will give you all the info, but if you want more there are tablets everywhere with more detailed info. If you're an aficionado of Harry Potter, there were quite a few scenes filmed here.
W. W.
What a cool, peaceful and serene cathedral. Such an incredible building. Intricate details were fascinating.
T. S.
Wow! The combination of the sheer scale, the intricacies in the architecture with all its gorgeous geometry, the spectacular stained glass windows, the artefacts, the statues and the energy of this site are all truly tremendous! We were lucky enough to meet two locals, whose names were Kurt and Sam. Kurt is studying in great depth the history of the stained glass, whilst Sam has been documenting some of the graffiti that has been carved into the stone here over the centuries. The acoustics contribute towards the more eerie aspect of the atmosphere, but this doesn't make the overall feeling of the place any less serene. There is lots of well-researched information in appropriate and accessible locations, to help the visitor better comprehend that magnificence at which they will, if they have any appreciation for such things, inevitably gape agasp. Apparently, some of the findings suggested are a little contentious, but that's not unusual when we share somewhat esoteric information over the course of such extended periods; this potential controversy can be interpreted as adding to the charm of the experience. It looks like perhaps this place was used for some of the scenes in the infamous Harry Potter films. If that's not actually the case, it would still be easy to imagine, standing amongst the stonework and soaking up the echoes, that one might be at Hogwarts. What an awesome place this cathedral is. We were there for well over an hour and could have spent far longer. We'll be back. Highly recommended!
C. C.
Lovely Cathedral, recommend their tower tour to learn the history behind the tower and it's many bells.
L. K. M.

A. B.
Just wow! Fantastic architecture that really takes your breath away. The stained glas windows were beautiful and vivid. This made our visit to Gloucester and was the highlight of the day. A must see if you are in town!
C. B.
An amazing visit, plenty to see, so much history. Well with the time to seek out and enjoy some time to reflect and learn. The stained glass windows are in abundance and are both ancient and new and the mix in styles is surprising.
The cloisters are stunning and a must when visiting, the central garden is beautiful and a haven of peace. You can even buy a packed lunch in the cafe so you can sit in the garden to eat there.
We were lucky to be there whilst a young couple were getting married so we got to hear the organ and the bells in their full glory. The bride was of course radiant and had the most stunning dress. It made the visit that extra but special.
K. K.
Absolutely wonderful place, really worth visiting. I have been here twice already and will visit again. The cloisters are so beautiful. As added bonus, especially for children, it is great to know that they acted as Hogwarts too.
T. H.
Beautiful Gloucester cathedral, stunning vaulting and columns, the stonework glows a fantastic colour which adds to the ambience abd not forgetting the stain glass windows which in any light are amazing
S. A.
Wow what an amazing place. It's beautiful. They ask for a £5 donation when you arrive. My girls are massive Harry Potter fans and they had a little screen in the cloisters with a bit of information about Harry Potter filming here. Took some stunning pictures and will definitely be back again.
J. J.
We had a lovely afternoon exploring the cathedral, very interesting and plenty of photo opportunities, the stained glass windows are beautiful. No fee for going in but there is a suggested donation. Well worth a visit.
Y. H.
This place is free for visiting, here you could see the amazingly gorgeous architecture of the cathedral. Of course for me, Hogwarts it is!
D. C.
Beautiful cathedral. Never knew about it before but a lovely find on a flying visit to Gloucester. Stunning inside. Well worth a visit
J. H.
Incredible place. Haven't been back here since I left school but it is worth a visit. Great history and amazing architecture. We also met the new Dean who was very welcoming and massively proud of the Cathedral. Real nice chap, I wish him well with his promotion.
Y. S.
Nice place, especially the part where Harry Potter was filmed. Tasks for children are interesting. We are going to return to the library.
K. W.
Beautiful historic building. The themed activity sheet for kids led us to the processional cross used in Queen's coronation and the whispering gallery behind the great east window. We've been lots of times but still learn something new. The cafe just off the cloister was excellent.
P. A.
I have been visiting Gloucester Cathedral since i was a child..
This was first visit in two years due to the pandemic and it was my 57th birthday.
The changes and improvements are amazing. I revisited the whispering Gallery again and would always recommend the experience especially if you have kids its so much Fun, but dont ignore the exhibits of stone masonry and stain glass window making..
A peaceful place to spend an afternoon or longer..
B. N. M.
Wonderful Cathedral! Very helpful, kind staff. Brilliant guides! Excellent little cafe! Monk's Kitchen! ☕🍰The gift shop is full of interesting items at reasonable prices! Very peaceful visit! Perfect! 🙂
R. W.
Lovely couple of hours visiting this fabulous Cathedral in Gloucester on a dull August morning. Very interesting majestic architectural building, and the corridors where Harry Potter was filmed are truly magnificent . A great place to visit for all ages. As the Cathedral was free entry, we supported the Cathedral with a donation and had coffee and cake in the garden. Well worth visiting Gloucester!
K. B.
First impressions, friendly lady on the welcome desk who seemed really happy to be there. The volunteers were nice and well informed. Steps not recommended for the elderly. Good views minus the scaffolding. Only a donation recommended for entry
N. C.
What an amazing cathedral, you have to go up the stairs and see it from the balcony it is fantastic.
Lots to do for the children with making gargoyle faces and rubbings, I have no young children any more but there seemed lots for them to do.
Cafe on site and they had a brilliant ukulele band outside playing.
We spent a good 4 hours there between food and walking around.
G. B.
Went for a candlelight concert. Absolutely brilliant experience and sound
Well worth a visit
E. M.
I've been several times now, absolutely beautiful!
S. Q.
Absolutely stunning Cathedral with a quaint courtyard in the centre. There is a cafe, where you can get tea and cake or a bigger ploughman's etc, along with afternoon teas. It is free to enter but well worth a donation. Highly recommend
L. S.
Amazing structure. Beautiful Cathedral. Lots of history, spent at least 2 hours. 👍
K. O.
Amazing Cathedral with plenty of history. Get a tour if you can to learn more and bring the place to life. Our guide had so much knowledge and shared stories of the history. Highly recommended.
M. C.
Everytime you visit you discover something you did not see before. Its a marvel of what could be achieved with such poor health and safety without fancy technology. It was built with purpose unlike anything thrown up today.
s. h.
Beautiful place the architecture is outstanding. Well worth a visit.
D. L.
Did a guided tour of the Cathedral with a young relative during school summer holidays. Very interesting and enlightening. The young relative was very keen to see the area where Harry Potter was filmed. Very good value in the Monks cafe, the sandwiches were excellent, well filled with a good side selection accompanying.
A. S.
Superb. Free entry (although they would welcome a donation). Beautiful stained glass and architecture. I thoroughly recommend the guided crypt tour (small charge £3 ish) and the Tribune gallery. Also a very good cafe (Monks Kitchen) Like I said - Superb.
Y. S.
Absolutely awesome. Can't wait to be part of the NAFAS floral Festival spring 2023. The Cloisters are one of the prettiest I have ever seen. Definitely try to get to the upper level for a different perspective to the beautiful space.
Definitely recommend
S. L.
Awesome. I'm a huge fan of stained glass windows, marble sculptures and Tudor history. Really enjoyed spending time there today. Pretty amazing to see so much history in one place. Loved it
P. H.
Great looking Cathedral inside and out. Download the Cathedral app for a self guided tour. Fabulous history in beautiful grounds. The treasury is also worth seeing with artifacts dating hundreds of years old.
M. J.
Amazing building, so breath taking. A Poignant time to visit and light a candle in respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who today is traveling from Scotland to Buckingham Palace to lay in State before her final day of resting. God Bless you Ma'am 🙏 💜💜💜
L. H.
It's an amazing piece of history and marvellous architecture ✅👍
J. C.
This place is amazing. The stained glass is beautiful and you just want to stand there all day and admire it. Definitely a must to go and visit if you're staying in Gloucester.
D. p. c.
The whole experience and learning all about how it was built fabulous atmosphere
P. L.
Entry by Donation. Great tours with knowledge guides for a small fee. Lovely art and history beautiful acoustics and amazing bells. A new tune most hours. Lovely to sit outside and listen
D. K.
Much better than it used to be. Super welcoming and friendly, full of interesting displays and interactive exhibits. It was always a beautiful building but they have clearly been putting effort into making it more engaging too.
O. P.
Gorgeously beautiful, beautifully preserved cathedral.
D. A.
Really enjoyable visit to Gloucester Cathedral, we stayed with one of the guides and got a complete experience on the history and then we walked around by ourselves afterwards. Impressive.
S. K.
Lovely place. OK I'm not religious but this place is clever. It gets the Harry Potter fans in! Can't fault it. Even bought stuff from the gift shop.
J. A.
Peaceful. Lots of history. A must also for any Harry potter fans!
S. T.
Magnificent religious construction with awesome acoustic. Take a tour or find your way around alone.
We had a concert in the choir area, singers and audience side by side, which was lovely. I bet it sounded good from the nave!
Finding areas used in the filming of Harry Potter is also a bit of fun - ah! - HP, RW & HG walked down this cloister!
I. S.
The building is outstanding piece of history, and any evensong or concert is great (regardless of your religious persuasion). Only advice would be, entry donation is voluntary, not compulsory as may be implied by the funnelling to the pay desk. Contribute what you can afford/want, if you can't afford it don't pay anything, and if a regular visitor don't pay every visit.
T. S.
Beautiful ! Felt divine & positive vibes and sat there on side benches just absorbing the peacefull atmosphere. Admired the whole cathedral structure, how they must have built it. Just amazing !
D. M.
Donations for entry. Really great to see the inside of this cathedral. Choir was practicing whilst we visiting and acoustics were awesome! Easy to spend a couple hours here.
A. N.
Incredible... My parents and I've visited the cathedral without knowing how impressive it was, so we were even more stunned than most!
We have NOT expected to be that stunning because a lot of people have no idea about this cathedral. But from now we make sure to tell everyone about it!
Take a day off and visit this place, it is sooo worth it. And the entry is free of charge as well, if it would be anywhere in France or Italy, you would definitely be paying!
J. D.
Beautiful example of Norman, Decorated and Perpendicular styles. Massive Norman columns. Delicate tracery in the cloisters. Stunning vaulted arches. Stained glass windows as good as any in England. Well worth a visit. Donation required.
M. K.
Beautiful building with opportunity to learn a lot about the history of the Cathedral together with the people who's remains are buried or enshrined there. Don't forget to look up as the ceiling throughout the building changes and has some intricate decoration.
M. D.
Of all the nations which comprise the UK, only England has cathedral churches which rank with those on the Continent. Gloucester's cathedral church of St Peter, is a bit of an architectural mess, owing to the transition from Romanesque to Perpendicular. But there is a dignity to Abbott Serlo's nave which is very striking. Whilst the great Crecy Window fills the Eastern end of the Quire. Well worth visiting; but not in the 'top ranks' of the cathedrals of the English.
L. J.
I went to honour the memory of someone special who has tragically left us. She loved to travel. A few of us are taking a photo, teddy or, in the case of her family, jewellery made with her ashes on tour to help continue her travel blog. They couldn't have been more helpful pointing out the interesting parts of the cathedral. I even had lights turned on to help take the photos of the photo I'm taking around with me.
L. D.
One of the best buildings I have ever seen. Nice little day out for those who are Harry Potter fans out there. Nice little cafe on the side, and the prices are really reasonable.
M. C.
Very nice and historical place to visit
D. B.
Wow amazing and couple scenes from Harry Potter fimed there
A. T.
Although we cant enter the cathedral at the mo due to covid, we really enjoy sitting in the wildflower garden outside and it's a very peaceful space to relax for everyone. Cant wait for cafe to reopen and enjoy all the calendar events including the amazing carols at Christmas, and the Three Choirs Festival. Beautiful place.
R. A.
Lovely architecture and wonderful individual Chapels within the main Cathedral. Nice shop. Look out for the Chapel with modern Blue Glass windows and the Italian Chapel. Entry by donation .
R. W.
This historic building is gorgeous especially the colour window was the biggest window in UK.
D. E.
Great place to visit, not dog friendly though so had to look around in shifts
D. W.
Great example of Norman architecture. Some wonderful details if you know what to look for 😇
J. S.
Beautiful! Fill of history, well worth a visit!
E. G.
When I was in residence as organist at Gloucester cathedral for a week two summer’s ago, we had a marvelous time in such a wondrous space.
J. M.
Very much enjoyed the choral practice I stumbled on when I visited for the first time.
I’m not sure if they are there often or I just got lucky but it added very greatly to my enjoyment that day.
Thank you for a lovely experience!
R. M.
Highlights were visit to the tomb of King Edward 11 who was murdered.
Absolutely beautiful stunning stained glass windows. Also to see where Harry Potter was filmed.
Also useful to take a Crypt Tour which is the hidden underground level of the Catherdral to explore the various side chapels used by the monks 900 years ago.
P. D.
Impressive building full of history! Visit recommended if you like history.
J. W.
Huge history and main well signed, so a visitor can walk through time and the history of the phased development of the cathedral.
K. B.
Beautiful Perpendicular #Gothic #Cathedral used as #Hogwarts in @HarryPotter films...
Fine #Memorials and #Monuments in the @Medieval part of @GloucesterCathedral
S. B.
Cathedral is fabulous as are the two squares surrounding it. We were very disappointed as we drove 2hours there specifically to tour the Cathedral by candlelight & to visit the crypt and to climb the tower. According to the Cathedral website, we could NOT pre book these tours, so assumed if you booked an arrival time, it was possible to book tours there and then. However, on arrival we learnt all tours were fully booked!
Totally ruined the day as we had both been looking forward to touring the crypt by candlelight and climbing the tower to see the city by night!
C. J.
Magnificent building with some beautiful stained glass windows.
Well worth a visit.
A shame they in common with many of our churches and cathedrals thes days have removed the old wooden pews and replaced them with characterless modern stackable chairs.
P. H.
It is always lovely to visit Gloucester Cathedral and the Close.
J. H.
Went as a family group at Jubilee time. The Cathedral quite often put events on at celebration times, this time it was a Corgi Hunt which was great fun for a 3.3/4 year old!
We also went into The Monks Kitchen for a snack.
F. H.
I have visited many historical sites of interest in the UK and was in the area so decided to pop in and have a look around ,not sure why but didn't have high expectations but I was wrong ! Superb way to spend a few hours taking in a building steeped in history.I must say I haven't visited many sites in the UK that match it's beauty and architectural brilliance.
M. G.
Wonderful tour of the tower, and very good value! Incredibly knowledgeable and amiable guide - and of course great views once you get to the top. Need to book in advance.
H. G.
Definitely going back. Such majestic architecture.
J.
Beautiful old cathedral. There's interactive acrivities for the kids. Lots of information on the history. Recommend the crypt tour. Very worthwhile.
L. S.
Never really had chance to appreciate the Cathedral before as usually had my kids with me. That was the first time I had ever walked across the upper viewing gallery. My legs wouldn't let me walk too close to the edge but seeing stained glass windows or details in the wall was like seeing it all for the first time. The little things I had learnt or having time to read the many memoriam stones or the explainitory write ups relevant to particular parts of the Cathedral I found extremely interesting. Seeing the garden within the walls of the Cathedral was a first also. Really appreciated every second I was in there.
P. W.
Mind blowing architecture and history in every nook and cranny. Whether you are religious or not the Cathedral makes for a very interesting visit. Allow several hours at least to see it all.
R. M.
Loads of history and beautiful architecture. Could have walked around for ages. Really enjoyed our visit.
I. I.
Having been to winchester, york, canterbury, bath and wells..this was a disappointment compared to aforementioned. Of course the architecture is stunning but a lot of the glass is Victorian. The Harry Potter connection was interesting. If you are on a tour of cathedrals then Worcester is worth the stop.
K. J.
Absolutely stunning place. Free entry but you can offer donations. Mesmerising experience. There is a cafe inside. Easily accessible with a pram.
T. M.
Beautiful Cathedral its just a shame i was made to feel a bit guilty as I arrived without a purse. They greet you with ... we don't charge but suggest you donate ... when I explained I had no money on me the lady on the desk was a bit frosty.
A. 7.
Great place to visit lots to learn and see
J. H.
Beautiful cathedral. Good facilities for the disabled, ie. Small lifts to take wheelchairs etc to higher levels, but unfortunately no access for them to crypt.
J. S.
Really lovely. Staff freindly. Clean donation is asked for up keep.
L. C.
We went to a sound bath. I felt very privileged to be able to take part in this. Lying on the floor in the chapel listening to music and being so relaxed
R. M.
In awe of Gloucester Cathedral, its history, scale and beauty. Much has been done to improve the visitor experience compared to 20 years ago, it is so much more than just a building.
L. L.
Stunning cathedral with mind boggling stone work. Well kept throughout including the immediate area outside. Free for all, but please make a donation.
E. C.
Time well spent
It is a great day out
Z. W.
Beautiful surroundings that are well maintained. There was an excellent cafe called the Monks kitchen that we got refreshments from and a nice big peice of home made cake what a way to finish.
M. P.
A beautiful cathedral. So much history to be seen. The architecture is wonderful. The staff we spoke to were polite and helpful. Wheelchair friendly. I would recommend a visit.
C. M.
What an amazing cathedral!! The cloisters were used for filming some of Harry Potter, it's a breath-taking architectural masterpiece. The stained glass windows are so beautiful.
L. B.
Gloucester Cathedral is an amazing cathedral within the city, the grounds around it are stunning and the history in and around it are so interesting. Yet alone inside which is simply amazing, a must visit as soon as you can. Especially any Harry Potter fans who will recognised the corridors of the cathedral and courtyard!
K. P.
The heritage tour was fantastic. It was just myself and my husband and we were asked what our particular areas of interest were so our very knowledgeable guide could focus on those.
d. l.
Beautiful and very historic. Well worth a visit. The sense of calm and peace upon entering is amazing.
j. m.
Hi guys , I was working in Gloucester and it would be a sin not to spend some time admiring the town, especially the cathedral, its a must ,
Going back when the tours are open and have more time
P. W.
One of the most beautiful Cathedrals in the Country. Visit and take one of the guided tours, learn just a little about the history of this magnificent building, the resting place of a King, a coronation took place here, parliament sat here and I've not started on the architecture and the films that have used the building as a location. Come to this historic City and visit this historic landmark. Check the website and you may be able to plan your visit with an opening of the Cathedral library.
G. K.
Fantastic experience; truly one of the most beautiful Cathedrals in the country.
The eras of history that this building contains, showing features and designs from Norman Romanesque (around the 11th century) all the way through to perpendicular Gothic (14th to 15th centuries) and beyond is astounding. The bueaty, care and symbolism that this monolith demonstrates cannot be missed. If you are visiting the era, I believe it should be required that you visit.
The staff were friendly and helpful. They were not intrustive, only providing help and information if you showed a particular interest or asked.
The only thing I wish I could have seen more of was displays with information. There were many small features, for example a repeated artistic motif, or a particular door or decorative item that I would have loved more insight into. Admittedly, we did visit during the Covid-19 epidemic, so I'm sure more that was available was not displayed, but having good signage for all of the tombs, statues etc. would have been really helpful in immersing myself further.
s. p.
Beautiful spiritual building, that you can visit for free.Contains the tomb of Edward11.The stained glass windows are amazing. The Alter itself is also simply stunning.
G. G.
Beautiful cathedral steeped in history. The staff were very friendly and inviting on arrival, they also have a good level of knowledge of the grounds and the cathedral itself.
I took my 6 year old son who was fascinated by everything and especially loved walking down the cloisters where they filmed the Harry Potter films.
We prob only spent about an hour walking around to kill some time and it was well worth it and the highlight of our day.
Y.
Impressive place with a lot of history.
We had a sunny day and we decided to stay there for the lunch as well.
Nice walk in the cathedral and we enjoyed some good rest under the sun in the gardens.
L. A.
Well worth a visit. Friendly and helpful staff, plenty of accessible areas with ramps/lifts of needed, and stunning stained glass windows. Be sure to visit the cloisters and take a walk around the courtyard.
G. G.
Amazing Cathedral! Incredible architecture, lovely tour guides. Free entry (donations suggested).
m. f.
Fantastic architecture.. Absolutely stunning.. Free entry but will accept any donations... Secret gardens were a tranquil relaxing place to take time out.
N. S.
Great deals at the tea room!
I. J.
I was a bit sceptical as we approached the cathedral, which my wife had been to before without me and insisted we re-visit. Yes, it's a beautiful building, but it didn't look really <italic, that bit, impressive and being highly critical, not terribly big. How would this religious edifice stand out amongst it's Christian peers, including the lovely cathedral in Wells?
Well, how wrong was I.
The cathedral is 100% fantastic and a must see, in my humble opinion.
The building has been modernised very tastefully, with well thought out features for the modern day visitor, which do not intrude on the beauty of its medieval architecture.
Glass has been used widely in subtly keeping out the elements (that's a posh name for the weather, folks) and providing discreet safety for the curios visitor, such as I. The whispering gallery is particularly lovely, as it leads to high areas of the building which are atypically closed off in similar buildings.
There's a wealth of interesting information, tombs of noblemen, smaller chapels and displays of restoration work, so we (2 adults, 2 tween-agers) were kept interested for a considerable time.
Oh - and it's interesting to see where scenes from the Harry Potter films were shot.
T. B.
Beautiful cathedral converted from an Abbey by Henry VIII, only spared as Edward II is buried here. Robert of Normandy, William the conquerors son is also buried here. Access is free, although donations are welcome as usual. Toilet facilities available. I believe the cathedral has their own cafe adjacent, but I didn't investigate.
C. M.
Really interesting and beautiful place to visit. Lots to see, very well presented. Well worth a visit
M. H.
Just amazing, Gloucester cathedral is a find. I love it and can only urge people to visit if they are in the area.
C. K.
A magnificent building that is well worth a visit. Entry is free but make a donation if you can.
G. A.
I was amazed this cathedral was free to enter, I gave a donation but I imagine the cost to upkeep this building is very high. The building is beautiful & impressive, the history is very interesting. Worth a visit even if you're not into religion.
0.
Absolutely stunning and we was able to leave a prayer reading for my missing brother James Miller, was such a special heart touching moment xx
L. W.
Such a magnificent building, spent the morning exploring the cathedral. Enjoyed that fact that you're free too also explore some of the galleries, which enables you to overlook the main part of the cathedral.
D. B.
Stunning place cathedral amazing was wedding at the time
P. H.
Amazing detail in all corners of this beautiful place. We lit candles for our loved ones. Enjoyed learning about the history, had ice cream in the cafe.
There are also lots of poke stops in and around this building for people who play Pokemon.
R. P.
Beautiful old cathedral, peaceful and uncrowded. Especially interesting for the tomb of Edward II..very attractively landscaped grounds plus a cafe. Well worth a visit
R. L.
This cathedral was absolutely stunning! We came upon it on happenstance! I was absolutely shocked at the beauty! My only disappointment was that we were unable to go into the centre tower as it closed at 4, yet no one told us that when we were given admission. Had we known we would have went to the tower straight away!
P. N.
Just went to the café today, good food and good service. Had the the Cathedral tour carried out by Nick before he was an excellent guide full of useful information.
P. N.
Well worth a visit Superb architecture
r. j.
A beautiful medieval cathedral from the eighth century built on the foundations of an earlier Saxon building. The cathedral is quite small compared to its contemporaries. It was modernised under the reign of King Edward the second who had some historical links to the city. There are magnificent stained glass windows which for centuries were the finest in the land. The cathedral is beautifully maintained with a small museum on the first floor gallery accessed by a steep spiral staircase which features educational exhibits explaining stone masonry and construction techniques including an early hoist. There is a delightful bijou cathedral shop downstairs. The guides were friendly and informative and the cathedral is well worth a visit. All the access lanes and roads to the building have unique pavement mosaics depicting the various gateways. The vaulted Norman ceiling in the transcript is stunning and the main tower is architecturally magnificent.
a. t.
Recent moon exhib was excellent family day out complete with tour of cloisters of Harry potter fame had our residents brimming with smiles. Some enjoyed the relaxing gardens and whispering gallery and trying all costumes and enjoyed great views from the top. Cafe was fab as always really decent snacks for all tastes and pleased to see vegan and gluten free choices at prices not through the roof. Good service even when busy. Excellent.
D. H.
Wow. Gorgeous sprawling building with something new around every corner. Worth a drive if you're in the area. Must see
J. L.
Amazing place and a friendly volunteer guide. Definitely worth a visit even after spending the previous day at Salisbury Cathedral
A. S.
The cathedral is beautiful and is worth going to see for the sights alone. Inside you'll be greeted and informed about the different things you can view inside. After making an optional charitable donation you are free to roam around, take in the sites and learn about some of the sites rich history.
Myself and my partner were initially interested in the cathedral as it was a filming location for some of the Harry Potter movies but once we got there we also fell in love with the artwork and heritage of the site.
N. R.
First time here in years. Free to enter but a donation is very helpful to towards maintenance. Great place to visit!
E. Y.
One of the best Cathedrals I’ve ever seen. Thanks Harry Porter made it appear to the world. Beautiful and mystery ceiling. Beside, people working there were kind and knowledgeable. They could have been more commercial, but I really appreciate cathedrals being so open to public.
B. S.
I love the place. Totally fell in love with it the moment I saw it. Also, went to their tour on both the upper and lower grounds. Knowing it's history just satisfied my whole experience. A definite must go if you are in UK.
M. S.
Amazing stained glass windows
A. B.
Beautiful place, and even with the hidden Harry potter bits, just a shame that are not marked out, but the staff are more than willing to point them out, and to get in it's just what ever donation you want to give, which all goes towards the conservation work
S. D.
The kids did the family trail and absolutely loved it. Kept them interested for a good couple of hours.
N. H. A.
Gloucester Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity, in Gloucester, England, stands in the north of the city near the River Severn. It originated in 678 or 679 with the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter (dissolved by Henry VIII).
R. B.
A very nice place to visit, well impressed with all the stained glassed windows, and the size of the cathedral.
I. H.
Fantastic place to work. Friendly and helpful staff and volunteers. Highly recommend the monks kitchen for quality food. Will be back as a pilgrim soon.
s. d.
I always find some much needed moments of calm and wonder when visiting this glorious cathedral. Last night at a concert we heard the sounds of Spanish guitar music in the chapel and then had a quiet walkabout under the moon installation. Both were beautiful beyond words.
J. K.
Spent hours in this amazing building. Voluntary Donation to enter or pay for personal guide.stunning!
D. B.
Simply stunning cathedral, must visit if you're in the area.
I.
Whether you are religious or not the atmosphere and history in here is deeply humbling. The level of detailing and crftsmanship in this building is truely remarkable. There is a cafe that serves great food and refreshments and if you are lucky you will get to see a full choir and conductor demonstrating the beautiful acoustics of this incredible space. There are also some contemporary stains that are well worth a look. I have been here many times in my life and this building never fails to draw me in...there is always something you have missed. I strongly recommend a visit!
R. B.
Lovely cathedral, beautiful on the inside. The choir is magnificent and they have done a lot to make the stay worthwhile and educate on the cathedral. In one of the side chambers they have set an educational area where you can create glass mosaics, operate a mini crane, do your own sculpture etc perfect for kids and childish grown ups.
R. V.
A lovely cathedral and well worth a visit. The kids loved the Harry Potter links too. Only negative is a lack of information showing the history of the building itself. If it was there is not obvious.
H. S.
Beautiful! Especially their cloisters, when the sun is shining through the glass windows! I was spending there a lot of time in the morning and returned late afternoon. It was a totally different experience, depending on the hour and weather.
L. L. G.
A great historical place to visit and take a deep breath and appreciate the location. The construction style represents a significant contribution for humanity
A. D.
Went to visit my brother who lives in Gloucester and he took us here to show us around. I was very impressed as I didn't think it would be as huge as it is compared to other, City Cathedrals. Recommended donation is £5. Can easily spend 2-3 hours in here admiring the architecture and grounds. Lovely hidden garden to have a picnic to. Harry Potter exhibition well worth a visit too if your a fan as part of the movies were filmed here. *****
A. F.
A must visit place if in Gloucester. Has been here since Saxon times and has royal connections. Free guided tours available or buy a guidebook and stroll around. Visit the tribune gallery for unusual views and Harry Potter fans will recognise the cloisters.
Nice cafe and gardens to sit .
C. W.
Beautiful relaxing atmosphere

So i finished my day at Gloucester at 5.30pm and have never been to the Cathedral as yet so i thought todays the day. i found a good size car park near the water front. its free after 6pm. parked up and took a walk. as i left the car park i saw signs for the Cathedral. first saw some boats. a couple of cool barges and a mini tank. the walk to the Cathedral from the car park was 10 minutes. with plenty to see on the walk. theres plenty of signs too. the walk took me into a very old part of the town. with buildings looking very old and stylish with a tudor look and feel. i then saw the entrance. it was open anx free to go into the grounds. i walked all the way around it an the views of this Cathedral are stunning. i found some tudor style houses behind it and a cool arch way. it was all clean and tidy and a lovely setting to end a busy day. sadly the building itself was closed so a future trip is needed.
L. W.
Very ornate cathedral outside and lovely courtyard area at the back. On the day I visited the Philomonic Orchestra were rehearsing for a concert that evening so I had the added bonus of hearing them play.
P. M.
The best cathedral visit ever. It is a fantastic building where an almost 1000 years old Norman abbey is the base and the added gothic wings are amazingly great and connected perfectly.
In the cloister the ornamentation is so rich, I had to check that it is gothic at all or a later style (baroque or gothic revival). It is a breathtaking place. Later I realized the Harry Potter movies used this amazing environment. Indeed, it does not seem a real building from the 14th century.
The other important part is the management of this abbey. It is really visitor friendly: there is a mobile app (ios and android), where you can get detailed background. (And you can download from their free wi-fi! In a church!) They were brave enough to create a walk on the upstairs and use the vaults to project information.
In the same time the place could stay sacred, so the visitors have not broken its soul.
It is free, but donate them, every penny would go into a worthwhile place.
R. H.
One of the finest cathedrals I have visited. The architecture is stunning, the cloisters are a real treat for any Harry Potter fan. I would also recommend going on one of the crypt tours. Look out for Edward II's tomb and the exhibition in the high gallery.
a. p.
What an amazingly beautiful place . The architecture is beautiful such alot of history in this building .it is free to enter they ask for a donation which is voluntary.
The Tomb of King Edward II the murdered king is in the cathedral as is the tomb of William the conquerors eldest son who was classed as the king that never was..
The stained glass windows are amazing and if you do visit make sure you go up into the whispering gallery .
Also the cloister is well worth walking through it is so impressive it was used in filming the Harry Potter films . One of the only reasons Henry VIII did not destroy this cathedral during his ruthless dissolution of the monasteries is because his relative king Edward II is buried here .
Plus a visit to Gloucester cathedral has the bonus of visiting other places in the beautiful city of Gloucester.
Visit and enjoy .
G. G.
Engaging visit to a stunning Cathedral. Lots to see and do for all the family. Cafe is delightful with plenty of GF V VG options. Please add fridge magnets to your shop.
L. R.
Lovely, had to donate but it was free other than that. It was really interesting to look at the graves in the floor and see where Harry Potter had been filmed! Definitely recommend! The design is just amazing
J. J.
What a stunning place, beautiful architecture, saving some for nexr time. Beautiful stained glass windows. Lit a candle for those we love but are no longer with us.
N. C.
Gloucester Cathedral is a lovely place to visit. Full if history, some bits for the kids to do if you can manage to climb the spiral staircase. See if you can spot some of the areas used in The Harry Potter films. My son absolutely loved his time we spent at the Cathedral and he is only 5 years old. And brought back memories for me when I used to visit as a child. 100% worth a visit.
A. C.
What a fascinating place. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.
A. P.
As one of the organists in a choir party who were leading the worship in the cathedral last week, we were looked after very and made welcome. Everyone was very helpful and supportive.
R. W.
Amazing place to visit. Very beautiful. Staff knew their facts and entry was free. Would 100% recommend.
E. J.
Beautiful place. Lovely guides willing to chat to you and lots of rooms and passages to explore.
W. Q. T.
A nice place full of history and burials. Follow the tours to get more info about the cathedral. They are free (when I was there) but donations are recommended.

Stunning Cathedral. There’s so much to see here and clearly, loads of history. The staff here are really welcoming and helpful. I did the Crypt tour which was fascinating to find out about how the Cathedral had changed over the years + how the monks loved there.

Gloucester Cathedral in as impressive as it welcoming. The volunteers are very friendly and helpful. The £2 guide book is of excellent quality and the building in impressive. We are lucky that important structures such as this are being used, cared for and restored.
J. S.
The Gloucester cathedral is the best one in all UK it's amazing inside and outside. All the volunteers are really nice and take care the monument and visitors as well. From the new access to the top floor you can see the cross floor of this one. It's incredible to live near to it and have the chance to visit it when I want.
A. M.
What a fantastic cathedral, steeped in history and things to see inside. You have the cloisters where they filmed some of Harry Potter, the garden. They have public toilets and a coffee shop too. The Carol service at Christmas is sensational
C. R.
This is the best cathedral I've ever visited other than Westminster Abbey.
S. D.
Stunning building and a bonus that we could re-enact some scenes from Harry Potter. The whispering corridor was fascinating. Plus some interactive things for the kids to do.
N. G.
One of those cathedrals that doesn't get written about enough. There is so much heritage, history, and knowledge that this cathedral holds. It's also juts a gorgeous space to be in. Definitely worth going to visit when in the Cheltenham/Gloucester area.
M. W.
Majestically beautiful, spend some tranquil time looking at this magnificent structure and being surrounded by a calmness.
S. W.
Excellent experience, recommend that you do a guided tour. The guides are full of knowledge that you wouldn't find if you walk around with out. Cafe excellent except we were too close to the servery.
D. s.
Absolutely beautiful cathedral..any Harry Potter fans is a must visit as well stunning place
A. K.
What a beautiful cathedral and following its renovations and improvements that are currently ongoing it will be even more splendid, or returned to its original splendour (depending on your point of view). Its definitely worth a visit as you can admire the structure and architecture of this ancient building which originated in 678 or 679 with the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter. The foundations of the current present church being laid in 1072-1104.
Its a stunning building and worth a visit regardless of whether you are interested in the architecture, the magnificence of the glass windows, a history lover or just looking in general. The sense of awe coupled with a wow factor are there and will not disappoint.
S. C.
Was at the Cathedral for a friend's funeral. My only complaint is it was very, very cold. I love the Cathedral it is rich in history and is archaeologically beautiful. A must see if your in Gloucester.
J. S.
Beautiful cathedral simply oozing with history!
H. B.
Such a beautiful cathedral! The outdoor space has been improved recently and it's absolutely stunning! The building itself is wonderful - so many interesting things to see. There's often an exhibition going on too, which is great. There's also the draw of Harry Potter - walking the same ancient cloisters is very exciting for young and old fans. Must visit!!
A. C.

Such a beautiful place with lots of history. And of course Harry Potter.
L. T.
This cathedral is beautiful. So much to see. Enjoyed our time here.
J. H.
One of the most impressive cathedrals in Britain I've ever visited! Gloucester was a nice surprise as the cathedral itself and surrounding area have survived (and been restored) incredibly well. The cathedral itself was free and definitely worth a visit for that reason, a vast building with plenty of amazing stained glass to see and perhaps the most impressive and photogenic surviving cloisters I've seen! You are able to see quite a lot of the cathedral itself (more than a lot of them I have seen) going upstairs with the possibility to look down across the cathedral nave and see the cathedral's impressive stained glass windows from another perspective. This upstairs experience came with an impressive exhibition on carving and the craft throughout history on cathedral buildings twinned with projections on the cieling I was fascinated to see. Only surprising thing to me was the request to purchase a pass to allow photography in the building, as the cathedral was free I didn't mind this too much in the end however as it was such an impressive experience, I saw it as a donation anyway.
M. G.
Awesome place...so many beautiful pleasures for your eyes....and if you're a Harry Potter fan you're in for a treat...well worth a visit
A. S.
Really pretty architectural building both inside and outside. The garden is really beautiful & the hall ways are stunning too. Plenty of glass paintings, wall statues & decorations to be witnessed. Some Harry Potter scenes have been recorded here. If you are around Gloucester, this is a must go place. Thanks.

Must visit place if you visit Gloucester
Located in the heart of city
Have a great history since the time Roman empire used to rule the City.
You can easily able to spot some of the familar location from the Harry Potter
A. M.
Beautiful place, quiet to study in the outdoor garden and the inner garden.
You can see so many things and then if you like Gothic churches I suggest you go there.
c. j.
A stunning cathedral very calming and a great escape from the busy city
E. M.
I love visiting the Cathedral with my family. There's always an event going on or just sitting in the grounds with fish and chips is a joy.
J. A.
Amazing architecture. Also must visit place for Harry Potter fans and few scenes were filmed here
a. k.
One of the best cathedrals that I have been to! Beautiful interiors, must visit if in Gloucester!
K. E.
The magnificent Gloucester Cathedral was built in 1100 as a Norman abbey church and survived the Dissolution thanks to its historical connection with the monarchy. It has one of the largest medieval stained glass windows in England and an elegant and impressive interior.
M. S.
Wow, Gloucester Cathedral is gorgeous. I was so taken by the stunning corridors, i took so many photos of just them..😊❤
A one way system in place and most people stuck to the rules, i was more then happy to pay a very reasonable donation.
D. B.
The vivaldi concert was great the cathedral was average compared to other cathedrals around the country the city town center was dire. Will not be visiting Gloucester again for pleasure. Sorry people of Gloucester.
C. c.
It was so beautiful, had some interesting and unique quirks, and it was fun seeing a bit of Hogwarts!
t. c.
I visited Gloucestershire for the first time went from chepstow to Gloucester by train its a 30 min journey and the town is very big and visited the tailor of Gloucester (peter rabbit) what amazing shop then through the archway you come to Gloucester cathedral wow it is so amazing just so beautiful inside and outside, we had coffee and cake in the cathedral.
Also harry Potter was film here as well
E. D. S.
The building is really worth a visit. :) But on not Sunday you cant go upstairs! 😞
J. H.
What a stunning setting and a spectacular restoration at Gloucester Cathedral. Just been to see The Moon exhibition in the cathedral, one of many imaginative uses of this historic building. The visit was really well managed and the cathedral itself quite breathtaking. Right in the centre of a very much on-the-up Gloucester city.
S. D.
Very beautiful place. Lots to see and lovely grounds around the cathedral.
J. B.
Gorgeous building, went on the scaffolding tour and was completely worth it. Wonderful area with an incredible story
A. *.
Its a stunning place of worship, or was. There is a 'cleaning' scheme underway which his made all the stone look like it was laid yesterday. Which ruins the look of the building itself.
The automatic doors 'modernise' the entrance before you are met by the Cathedral Gestapo. A sign makes you aware that a £5 donation is 'suggested' and you are watched eagle eyed by the encumbent volunteers counting every penny you put into the coffers.
This made my partner and I very uncomfortable. Being a Christian I was about to walk through and not pay as I should not have to pay to enter a place of worship, but ..I also know that places like this require funds to maintain them.
I would 'suggest' that the 'suggest £5 donation' sign be removed and replaced with 'Any donation is welcomed and gratefully received'!
Amen 🙏

The architecture and the history was really fascinating and very interesting. Staff were very helpfull and lunch in the on site cafe was very good.
C. A. L.
Lovely place to go. Go inside alot, absolutely beautiful. I gave it 4 stars because it would be great if I was able to take my dog in but I completely understand why not
V. M.
Absolutely stunning. How did they build such buildings all those years ago.
J. N.
A magnificent cathedral well worth a visit need at least a couple of hours to appreciate the total craftsmanship and magnificence of this beautiful Cathedral
T. T.
What a spectacular building. Breathtaking with atmosphere & history.
S. B.
Lots to see and read about the cathedral. Really enjoyed the prayers and reflections on the hour as well as the lunchtime weekday communion service.
J. D.
Stunning architecture and stained glass windows. Lovely place to wander around in quiet contemplation.
P. H.
A splendid day spent in Gloucester Cathedral, recapturing the history of 900 years. Seeing the burial tomb of Edward 2nd, listening to the bells peeling and the choir singing. Met a very nice lady there who I chatted to for a while. The cathedral is a must visit to anyone coming to Gloucester. You will be surprised at how much British History is within the area.
D. K.
They really have done a great job of making the cathedral wheelchair accessible. We'll worth a visit.
S. O.
Beautiful cathedral with many features. The grave of Edward 2nd is here too.
The cloisters were used in the Harry Potter series!
Many fine old buildings in the city of Gloucester. Lots of history. Can easily spend a day here - and the ice cream is to die for 😉
A. L.
A very well kept cathedral. Worth the visit to interior and to hear the wind organ being played.
R. S.
Really beautiful and great we could go to the Upper levels. Always worth a visit
S. S.
Really nice cathedral very interesting and when we went there was a choir singing.
R. L.
Great place to visit. So much to see. Will definitely go back with more time.
P. M.
When my partner said we were going to visit a cathedral I wasn't very excited, but wow was I amazed at the grandeur of the building. Lots of history to read about inside as well
R. J.
Great for the people who like Harry Potter, and it is free!
F. V.
Free entrance (donation basis) for real cool atmosphere and Harry Potter film spots
A. M.
Gloucester Cathedral is awe inspiring. Every thing about it is beautiful, outside and in. Visiting is like stepping out of time. There are guides to help you if you want to know the history. Some scenes from "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" were filmed here.
r. f.
Beautiful inside and out.
I. A.
Fascinating relic of history. Amazingly well-preserved and richly displayed. A big thank you as well to tour guide Monica, who took me around the Cathedral and was patient enough to answer my questions.
T. P.
A stunning cathedral in the heart of Gloucester city. The services here are wonderful and the choir is magical. This is such a fascinating place to wonder around, so much to see. A donation on entry is requested and rightly so; maintaining such a complex and stunning building must cost a fortune. I would recommend looking around to anyone!
R. Y.
Superb cathedral and I am fortunate to have a painting on display in the cloisters as a part of the Art In The City Open Art Competition. Top cafe too... All highly recommended, even without my artwork!!!
S. L.
Majestic building with a great atmosphere.
Bit hard to find parking so plan your trip accordingly.
E. &. T. R.
We loved this place! The cloisters are truly, breahtakingly beautiful, the church is awe inspiring and equally beautiful. It's all very welcoming, and visitors are still allowed even during services. It has tea room and facilities, and we were even lucky enough to catch a choir and organ practice that was sublime to hear. Couldn't recommend it more highly.
S. H.
Beautiful cathedral with very impressive architecture and cloisters. Suggested donation to go round but well worth it. Refectory serves a good range of reasonably priced tasty food. Pilgrims pie was lovely.
P. B.
Well worth a look. Great cathedral with a long history. Lots to read and see inside. Upstairs there are some interactive exhibits that would keep the kids interested.
And there is the Harry potter connection too !
S. B.
Absolutely fantastic. Amazing architecture with quirks. Interesting place.
T. q.
We went to catch a last glimpse of the Christmas Decorations around the cathedral. it was a good visit for a rainy day.
T. K.
Fantastic Cathedral, worth a visit (was my third time and definately won't be the last!)
N. F.
Beautiful cathedral, and everyone we met were so knowledgeable and friendly. The priest John, took time to pray with me. I loved it. And the cafe is awesome, although they don't charge enough for the food.
G. S.
A beautiful place and very tranquil. It was very quiet when I visited on a Monday afternoon September Covid.
T. M.
A wonderful experience for anyone visiting. The history and the traditions are alive in this are inspiring place. Not to be missed.
L. B.
Pretty much like any other English cathedral. So if you visit without context for example with no guide it's pretty but pretty meaningless. That said it is a beautiful building.
n. R.
One of the best cathedral visitor experiences
E. P.
An Absolutely beautiful Cathedral. Would like to visit again.
B. W.
Stunning place a very brief visit but will come back again and explore more
L. L.
Nice Cathedral which was a filming location for Harry Potter. The other parts of Gloucester I saw looked dated and tatty, the carparks were old and too small, and the road system was poor with often long waits at traffic lights. Cannot fault the Cathedral itself though.
E. F.
Magnificent! We could spend the whole day in this cathedral. Beautiful building. Amazing history. If you have a day to spend in this cathedral, you should try their free guided tour. Their volunteers were very helpful and knowledgeable. Donations are welcome.
L. H.
Beautiful cathedral, but I never found the bull in the blue stained glass window
J. H.
Very nice cathedral, you dont have to pay but was happy to give a donation
R. G.
Visited the beautiful cathedral today - 21st November, would have stayed but for it being so very cold. The stained glass windows are some of the finest I have ever seen. And the amazing carved intricate stonework is wonderous to behold, especially since all of the planning, design and building was carried out by the master builder, starting with the design being traced in sand or plaster on the floor and discussed with the a abbot. I wandered around the cathedral looking in awe of its magnificence which took around one hour and three-quarters, but such a beautiful cathedral deserves much more time to take in all of it has to offer I will have to return, when it is much warmer.
A. G.
A very big cathedral with a lot of history, memorials,,
Magnificent looking and amazing architecture
Friendly staff,,
Worth a visit if you're near Gloucester,,
J. N.
Such a nice cathdale
A very peaceful
Such a lovely place.
D. J.
Beautiful cathedral! I didn't spend as much time as I would have liked. There was so much to see. A guided tour is also available and looked good. Beautiful blue stained glass window, really different. The secret garden is a lovely place to sit and think. Well worth a visit.
l. m.
Beautiful....Just leave a donation.
J. K.
An amazing piece of culture and history!
B. R.
Having been to all the major historic cathedrals this place was a revelation. Detailed descriptions around the place, interactive computer and hands on elements, shows the colours that used to be used in cathedrals.
Food was excellent as well. 100% recommended. Oh and it's free, but it was so good I left a good donation anyway
M. G.
One of the best cathedrals Ive ever been to.
You can actually explore it, unlike most cathedrals that are there for the main chapel, this has secret doorways, stairs and enclaves. Well worth it
d.
Magnificent historical site. Inside it's gorgeous. Come in for a small donation
P. W.
Great time here with a great friend
D. F.
Well worth a visit ,staff we spoke to absolutely fantastic special thanks to Susan on reception and chalkie one of the guides
D. A.
Best cathedral in the country. The whole building is available to explore. All for a charitable donation. Not a forced fixed entry fee. So much to see that you need a couple of visits. I believe that this is the standard other cathedrals should aspire to.
T. H.
Stunning building even if not the most exquisite of ancient cathedrals.
Exceptional welcomers and tour guides: really friendly and kind with great knowledge.
Whether you are a church goer or not - sit and attend a 5.30pm Choral evensong : sublime singing and a few moments of blissful calm.
L. B.
Wonderful visit yesterday, and we were lucky enough to hear an organ rehearsal, the choir rehearsing and the bell ringers practicing which were all incredible. The building is magnificent and its history is fascinating; the stained glass - from several different eras right up to the 1990s; the interpretation and welcomers really helpful. Try out the whispering gallery, and admire the views form the tower. We stayed for over 2 hours and then enjoyed lunch in the very good and reasonably priced cafe.
J. M.
Great day out at this lovely place the cathedral was outstanding am must visit if you are in Gloucester
T. W.
Love this building, nice architecture and a good atmosphere inside.
M. H.
Fantastic architecture and stunning place to visit. There is a lot of works going on around the outside grounds which you might want to wait for them to be finished. Inside is simply stunning, Harry potter fans will get there kicks from recognizing the halls and courtyard. There's a hidden Henson pig in the corridor for those looking, it might be Harry Trotter. Fantastic place to visit, I didn't have time to do the tour but it sounded really interesting.
K. A. S. I. M. M.
Very cool... Love the architecture... AND on top of all that...I didn't get mugged!! BONUS!
P. G.
Fantastic place to visit, so much history
G. T.
Very relaxing place to visit, entry by donation rather than a fixed fee, so good value especially for a family
P. M.
A stunning building. The Vaulting in the cloister is amazing. And there is a very good cafe. Plus it’s free you can make a donation.
T. G.
A true gem in Gloucestershire not only for history fans. More than 1300 years old, with a very interesting history and ofcourse don't forget that scenes from three (?) Harry Potter series were filmed in the cathedral. There is no entrance fee, however is a donation box you can contribute to carry on with their work. Also at the coffee shop you can have a beverage or lunch. The ladies at the reception were very helpful and you will be welcome to ask what you need to know. It is a must see, if you are in Gloucester.
P. C.
I love cathedrals and it very nice to visit this one . I really enjoyed my visit. It was good to go up to another level . Worth a visit.
P. D.
What a wonderful cathedral, I an amazed how they build them, well worth a visit
J. B.
Lovely peaceful cathedral. Beautiful courtyard garden
C. B.
Beautiful cathedral. The kids will love the whispering gallery upstairs, where you can hear each other from opposite sides of the building. Try taking photos from indoors of the outstanding stained glass windows. Entrance to the cathedral is free with a voluntary donation suggested. Usefully there is a small toilet building outside the cathedral.
W. W.
Probably a " must visit" if you are in Gloucester. It is an impressive structure but strangely did not move me like some other Cathedrals that I have visited.
D. H.
Really well restored cathedral with lots to see. Lovely grounds to relax in away from the noise of the city centre.
L. P.
My wife and I recently visited as we were keen to visit the tomb of my Great Grandfather King Edward II and pay our respects. We arrived nice and early 5 minutes before opening and easily found a disabled parking space beside the cathedral only a few yards from the entrance.
We were the first folk inside and were warmly greeted by the young lady on reception. We asked where we might find my Grandfather and were directed very accurately to his position. We took the opportunity to enjoy a stroll through the cloisters before anyone else could arrive and took some photos and video, it was awesome to walk the corridors used to film Harry Potter and to recognise some of the sets.
The cathedral is an amazing place to visit, we spent nearly an hour there before our next engagement beckoned, but we would return to soak up the ambiance of this fantastic building.
L. v. S.
Would suggest taking the free tour very informative, & it only takes 1 hour
The history is interesting especially the glass panes, they where removed during 2nd world war when they needed to reinstall they did not know how they fit together
Someone went to a stationary shop bought a postcard & the puzzle was resolved 🥰🙏🙏
A. B.
They filled part of Harry Potter here.
Fine example of Historical Architecture, well maintained and nice gardens.
C. S.
What a lovely and impressive place to visit! If you are around the area don't miss this one!
A. M.
Very interesting cathedral with whispering gallery, entrance by donation
A. K.
Very helpful and friendly staff. Good wheelchair access. Really enjoyed our visit.
A. B.
My husband and myself spent a lovely afternoon at the cathedral. The staff were friendly and helpful. We sat in the beautiful gardens for a while to "take 5"and take in the serenity and calm. A truly inspirational place. Will definitely visit again.
G. J.
Great looking cathedral with great tour experience. Initially felt like just another big old church so we just gave some shrapnel instead of a suggested donation. However there's a lot going on there...the history was really interesting, I loved some of the historic and recent stained glass windows, there's a lot going on as a busy local church and an amazing surprise for my Potter fan wife.
We spent well over an hour in there and we would have liked to have them to sit in the garden or have a coffee but had to go.
However, they had a contactless-enabled pad accepting £5 donations on the way out which I gladly gave to on the way out to help them carry on the great work.
Ultimately it's not for everyone and I noticed one family did a speed lap of the place in less than 5 minutes. But if you like history, Hogwarts or hide and seek I can thoroughly recommend it.
H. W.
Went when the moon in the cathedral exhibition was going on. Had entertainment for children and plenty of things to read about. Plus, one of the corridors featured in the Harry Potter movies!
D. G.
I Love this place it is absolutely AMAZING! The beauty of the art work brings tears to my eyes it's so amazing!
D. G.
The grounds were superb
K. M.
A beautiful building, the creation of which was first initiated by Henry Viii himself, holds much fasciating history within it's ancient walls. With a few friends we thoroughly enjoyed the awesome acoustics while we we sang hymns in the entrance this evening!🎶
A. P.
Only viewed the exterior as scenes for Doctor Who was being filmed. Some cobbles at entrances to the close can cause a bit of discomfort to wheelchair users. The cathedral looks best when viewed from the Severn water meadows.
R. M.
A beautiful example of church architecture and the surrounding gardens were a delight.
S. J.
The cathedral is free to enter. Although you can donate if you like. The architecture is enthroning. The cathedral hallway also features in Harry potter movies. It was just amazing.
C. H.
Beautiful been lots of times but everytime enjoy.
S.
Went specifically to see the moon installation, visited the cafe whilst there nice atmosphere and reasonably priced.
S. W.
Very interesting place to visit
C. S. F.
Beautiful cathedral, great set of tours: highlights, tower and crypt - check prices and times. You can tour most on your own, tho you'd miss the opportunity to be guided by a local volunteer.
A. P.
Beautiful cathedral with so much history and character. I’m lucky enough to live fairly close by and visit regularly - there’s always something different to discover and the welcome team go out of their way to make you feel......... welcome!
R. P.
Amazing structure of architecture, huge in space and on the 1st floor you can find a stone masonry where they detailed how they renovated the gargoyles
I. G.

Always a pleasure to visit this historical cathedral,Regular events and different things to see and do especially in and around the city centre and historical docks.
J. K.
One of the oldest cathedrals in the country and the resting place of a king! Enjoy a very pleasant walk around the cloisters whatever the weather. We were lucky enough to see a wedding in progress but that did mean that some of the cathedral was closed!
N. W.
Lovely place to visit, you don't even have to pay anything. As I'm not tight, I paid £5 per person.
M. S.
Only walked around the outside. Standard British cathedral. Nice touch to have information stone blocks scattered around.

G. K.
On the 25th May 2019 I had booked a coach trip to visit Gloucester Tall Ships to be held in Gloucester Docks, a wonderful part of this City’s old and historic part. Gloucester use to be part of the old Mercia Region of Great Britain. Gloucester is a city and district in the county of Gloucestershire it lies in the South West of England, of which it is the county town. Gloucester lies close to the Welsh border, on the River Severn, between the Cotswolds to the east and the Forest of Dean to the southwest. The country's most inland port has seen a regeneration program in the last decade, more visibly at the city's historic docks. It was in 1963 when I visited this beautiful City while I was in the Royal Navy and stayed with my best friend at the time we visited Cookes Cafe in Westgate Street with all his friends.
The cathedral city of the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire has its roots stretching back to Roman times and has continued to be an historic and important English city, boasting over 2,000 years of history. Gloucester Cathedral has been a place of Christian worship continuously for over 1,300 years, since Osric, an Anglo-Saxon prince, founded a religious house here in 678-9 AD. Gloucester Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity in Gloucester stands in the north part of the city near to the River Severn. It originated in 678 or 679 with the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter. This beautiful Cathedral is on par with Winchester Cathedral which I visited last year in 2018. The large stained - glass windows behind the high altar is an amazing sight. The cathedral was used as a location for filming the first, second and sixth Harry Potter films along with few other films including in 2008, the cathedral was used by BBC Wales as a location for the Doctor Who Christmas special and again in 2019, when it was used to film for an episode of series 12 of Doctor Who.
King Henry II granted Gloucester its first charter in 1155, which gave the burgesses ( the word Burgess originally meant a freeman of a borough of England or Wales or Ireland or burgh in Scotland . It later came to mean an elected or unelected official of a municipality, or the representative of a borough in the English House of Commons ) and thus came the same liberties as the citizens of London and Winchester. A second charter of Henry II gave them freedom of passage on the River Severn. The first charter was confirmed in 1194 by King Richard I. The privileges of the borough were greatly extended by the charter of King John, which gave freedom from toll throughout the kingdom and from pleading outside the borough.
Llanthony Secunda Priory is now a ruined and former Augustinian prior. It was founded in 1136 by Miles de Gloucester, 1st Earl of Hereford, as a retreat for the monks of Llanthony Priory.Around the 16th Century it had become an independent priory in its own right and had become one of the largest Augustian houses in England at that time, owning 97 churches and 51 well appointed manors.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries ( The Dissolution of the Monasteries which is sometimes referred to as the Suppression of the Monasteries, was the set of administrative and legal processes between 1536 and 1541 by which Henry VIII disbanded monasteries, priories, convents and friaries in England, Wales and Ireland ) the priory with its lands near Gloucester was granted by the Crown to Arthur Porter, MP for Gloucester. The Porters family and their descendants the Scudamores, used it as a mansion house until the Siege of Gloucester in 1643, when it became part of the Royalist camp. After the siege only outbuildings remained standing, used as a farmstead and stables
Today the remains are a grade 1 listed structure and are occasionally open to the public during Gloucester’s Heritage Open Days which usually fall in September. However it was open and manned by Volunteers on this day of the Tall Ships venue.
