Easy to spend a day here.
The furthest inland port in the country, Gloucester docks has been transformed. As well as the residential flats in the old warehouses, there's a large retail area nearby, the canal museum packed with exhibits and plenty of places to shop, eat and drink.
However, the historic feel remains thanks to a mixture of sympathetic & careful planning and mixed use. There are still barges and boats moored around the docks and a ship repair business on the north side.
Remnants of the area's industrial past are dotted about too. Look for the short stretches of preserved railway tracks, the old heavy rings used to moor large sailing vessels and the equipment used to load and transport cargo.

A lovely well documented walk through the docks, similar to the renovation of Albert Docks in Liverpool.
Loved the Maritime church, lots of seating available, a good range of eateries.
Also visited the outlet village.
Loved the mix of old and new buildings together.

Gloucester food festival hosted over the weekend was super fun with a lot of food stalls and drinks , the music was the highlight and was free entry compared to the one which I had recently visited Cheltenham food festival which cost 12 pound per person . The place was jam packed haven’t seen it so crowded and there were lot of stalls and cookery stall as well . Overall wonderful this Gloucester council can organise such events so regularly .

Great place full of history. Lot's of interesting places to visit here. The waterways museum is definitely worth exploring also the Gloucesters museum and the cathedral. Lot's of places to just sit and relax. Very close to the shopping precinct. Lots here to meet everyone's interests. Plenty of restaurants and cafés to enjoy and fill up on your favourite foods.

3rd of August 2021:
We finally chugged into here after getting through the two manned locks and wow!
So loved being moored up here at Gloucester Docks/Basin and absolutely stunning!
The historical docks and canal cultural landmarks and heritage is amazing.
It was hard leaving Gloucester Docks/Basin but we'll be chugging back here again after we've been to the end of the Gloucester and Sharpness canal....float a few days at Sharpness and then back to Gloucester Docks/Basin again, can't wait!
Thanks to all the CRT Bridge and Lock Keepers at Gloucester and on the Bridges all the way to Sharpness....
Finally, a big thank you to Gloucester City for such an amazing historical area here at the Gloucester Docks/Basin.
Gloucester City is now definitely on my favourite cities list!

Back for my second visit, great to sit outside in the sunshine, looking at a bit of the nightlife, and I'll probably come back tomorrow for some breakfast or brunch before we head off back home,
S. C.
Super size Welsh Cakes from Steffan, plus his own seasonal Victoria Plums, delicious.
A pint by the canal at Spoons, can’t fault it.
M. P.
Amazing place, lots of things to see and visit.
Lots of places to dine in.
Thank you, Gloucester County.
Ю. П.
nice area for walking, I really liked it. But the water is not blue, it is green-brown
R. P.
Beautiful docks and very historical. There is a museum next door, plus the commercial heart of Gloucester is by the Quays.

Great docks worth a visit lovely little market stalls and cafes . Wonderful buildings

Once The Biggest Inland Harbour of UK!
Beautiful Warehouses and Fantastic National Waterways Museum! ⛵💙
K. L.
Beautiful place! Really good renewal work that transformed the old warehouses into apartments, restaurants and etc that brought new life to this area.
P. H.
This a beautiful area. Loved the buildings, history and atmosphere. Only disliked seagull poop!
A. T.
Rare find to see Victorian docks here without too many changes. Often used for film sets. The waterways museum gives tons of information about the docks history. Lots of cafes and places to sit and enjoy surroundings. Boat trips in the summer are lovely.
J. a.
Loved the history and buildings here, particularly liked the sailors Chapel which you could go in. You can park right next to part of the docks , flat walking . Wasn't too dear to park, we Followed sat nav for parking. shame about the rubbish people drop. we did litter pick even though we were visitors!
H. B.
A real highlight of the local area; I would recommend visiting. It’s a charming spot to walk around - you may want to check out the nearby Waterways and Soldiers museums, the nearby Quays shops or some of the nearby restaurants and coffee shops. For the docks themselves I’d especially recommend walking across the lock at the northern side of the water, and the dry dock at the southwestern side, where you can see ships being worked on. The area is quieter than the high street, and more historic/picturesque with the calm water and narrowboat and small yachts moored up. Southgate (busy street running near the docks) does get a bit sketchy after hours but the docks themselves are generally fine. Overall it’s a cute area I’d recommend checking out on a relaxed afternoon or weekend.

While it refers to Gloucester Docks, we were actually visiting the OSM Orchard Street Market. This monthly event happens on the first Saturday and Sunday each month, details can be found on Gloucester Quays website.
Around 40 to 50 stalls selling local produce some craft and alcohol as well. Giving another reason to visit the area. Free to visit Free to try some of the products 😊
S. M.
No way, there is a dock other than the sea!
M. P.
Here yesterday for Strongman Champions League. Beautiful area well suited to these kind of events. We'll worth a visit
C. H.
A really historical place to spend an hour having a look around. There are nearby coffee shops and cafes to grab a drink and you can see a number of historical artifacts that indicate how busy the working docks would have been.
F. D.
Very impressive place to visit with loads of history.
Plenty of information on the history of this amazing ancient port.
Will revisit as soon as time permits.
B. S.
Shopping sightseeing or walking along the docks and canal is a must for locals and visitors alike.

Carefully restored area with lots of interest. Good walk around docks seeing variety of boats, old and new, Inc Sula, the lightship from the Humber, Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum(open Fri-Sun, 10-4), Waterways Museum (closed Sun & Mon) inc cafe, Mariners Chapel, wide range of eating places and Quays Outlet shopping. Good parking and short walk to adjacent city centre.

On the 25th May 2019 I had booked a coach trip to visit Gloucester Tall Ships to be held in Gloucester Docks, a wonderful part of this City’s old and historic part. Gloucester use to be part of the old Mercia Region of Great Britain. Gloucester is a city and district in the county of Gloucestershire it lies in the South West of England, of which it is the county town. Gloucester lies close to the Welsh border, on the River Severn, between the Cotswolds to the east and the Forest of Dean to the southwest. The country's most inland port has seen a regeneration program in the last decade, more visibly at the city's historic docks. It was in 1963 when I visited this beautiful City while I was in the Royal Navy and stayed with my best friend at the time we visited Cookes Cafe in Westgate Street with all his friends.
Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum, Custom House the Docks, 31 Commercial road, Gloucester GL1 2HE. I returned to this area of Gloucester on another visit on the 2nd August 2019. It was certainly less busy after my visit on the 25th May 2019 when the Tall Ships event was in full swing. This museum’s staff were very courteous and helpful. They had a small cafe area outside the Museum itself with tables outside which was pleasant enough on this very hot and sunny day. It was a bit hot inside under the glassed area. Inside the Museum itself were arranged in small rooms too small really to be able to take decent photos and videos. But that’s how it was it was an old warehouse and they made best use of what they had. The displays were arranged with thought for what was not really a very large museum but was certainly worth the money of Senior Citizen rate of £4.00. I thought this was a fair price to pay for what was on display. There were a number of floors to wander around on and it was well documented as you took the time to stroll around, for those that liked to read the history of the display settings.
National Waterways Museum Gloucester, Llanthony Warehouse, Gloucester GL1 2EH. I visited this Museum on Friday the 2nd August 2019. It looked impressive from the outside. Even Reception looked welcoming. Then the facia was laid open. The staff on reception were ok they explained the tickets purchased were for a whole years return visit. I would not want ( at the moment ) any return visit to this boring and hotch potch museum. I was told there were three floors of exhibits. But the second floor could only be visited by using the lift the stairs were being repaired. Fair enough you might add. But when you got to the second floor. There was nothing really worth seeing. Mainly items for kids to play on, which in itself was ok if there was enough to see otherwise. There was not. It was very disappointing what was there to see on this floor. The first two floors were ok but when you stood back and looked around there was not that much to really occupy you spending much time here. I can understand they may well be still putting together this museum. But the charge of £7.50 was way too high for what was on display at that time. It was really a total let down for me after the effort to return to this beautiful part of Gloucester docks and Quays. It was refreshing to be able to walk round after my visit on the 25th May 2019 while the Tall Ships display was on. This part of Gloucester is worth the visit on its own though and this museum is situated in a beautiful area of the Gloucester Docks.
Finally ending up at a newly acquired cafe called Brimbles Cafe in Westgate Street near St Nicholas' Church end and directly opposite the Gloucester Town Hall. This was a lovely little cafe that served great snacks and the staff were equally great. There was a very attractive floral display you could sit enclosed in to enjoy your coffee.

From a sleepy town of Gloucester of times gone by which had not much to offer.
Tourist are now flocking to this area with the old and new integrated together too see the many things on offer.
Very vibrant and bustling area.
A must see for all tourist.
J. W.
Gloucester Docks is a fabulous historical maritime place to vist and the tall ships festival enhanced the feel of Gloucester's waterside history
M. A.

j. S.
Very nice place, lots of bars and cafes
P. D.

A. C.
Great place to visit. Shops , museums boats and history. Always enjoy visits here. Something for everyone.
P. J.
A lovely place to eat and shop or just sit and watch the world go by.
D. H.
This shows what can be done to a run down dockyard if the local council has a bit of imagination.Nice place to spend a few hours with shops, restaurants and places to have a nice walk. You can go for a wander or just sit outside at a café and watch the world go by. Why can't other old rundown dockyards be developed like this?
A. C.
An interesting place to visit, quiet during Covid but lots of shopping and eateries too, will return in better times.
a. p.
Beautiful place, loads of good shops and restaurants, worth a visit.
R. H.
Lovely day spent here today, quiet, peaceful, with many places of interest within close walking distance. Toilets and places to eat on site. Lovely!
V. M.
So much to see here. Amazing barges, canals, shops. Plenty of choice of restaurants, cafes'and snack places. Waterways museum if needed somewhere to go o on a wet day. Beautiful canal trip on an old vessel that went to Dunkirk in WW2 to rescue troops. Very reasonably priced for a round trip with historic live information commentary about the surrounding dock land @£6.50 per head.
N. S.
Spacious, peaceful and relaxing.
B. D.
Wonderful work been done here. The history is still there, but the redevelopment around the area is first class. Modern shops, abundance of eating places and all very smart and clean.
K. R.
Lovely buildings and waterways. Plenty of information boards around. Accessible for everyone. Love the variety of shops and eateries among the warehouses. All within walking distance of the cathedral and city centre.
A. G.
Nice, quiet place for a walk and to eat.
C. K.
Managed to park on the Dock. Peaceful day, hardly a ripple on the water! Went cathedral but dogs weren't allowed in. Just outside was a lovely little tea room called(very aptly) The Comfy Pew. Had a lovely lunch. Lovely lady served us. She told us we could've gone inside but we chose to sit outside with the dog. Highly recommend a visit. Quaint but lovely&lean loo-outside round the side-I nearly went into the kitchen, which made the chef laugh!
R. G.
Living in Cheltenham it hurts me to say what a wonderful job Gloucester is making of improving itself all round, in particular the dock area is a good example of what can be done. The interesting mixed use of the warehouses, the cafe and restaurant scene(I recommend Cafe Tucci), the various boats and vessels from narrow boats to sailing ships being refurbished in the dry dock along with museums, historical artifacts, interesting canal and riverside walks all make for a great place to visit.
T. M.
Lovely place to visit and worth going into the Cathedral
A. F.
A group of converted warehouses surround the docks. I imagine this was once a busy place, full of merchants and the hustle and bustle of trade. Sit in a bench, close your eyes and you can imagine the life that was once here. Now there are a few restaurants and bars and the screeches of gulls hoping for a piece of a sandwich. Pleasant for a lunch break.
M. B.
Very nice place. Quite impressed with calmness and beauty.
L.
Went to take a photo of a dog and got called rude names from bystanders. 4/10 wouldnt recommend
R. S.
Very.interesting, last visit was.just as the outlet centre half opened, great.job looks really good, lots of places to sit, eat, drink . Signage fir route to Cathedral could be better.
Great days visit.
A. M.
A pleasant re-use of the old dockside buildings, offering retail and dining / drinking options. There is also the museum of the Gloucester regiment, if you like military history.
w. t.
Lovely place even for a walk. Plenty of pubs, bars, cafes n restaurants around. There’s a local market too. Spent a beautiful day around there.
G. B.
Lots of interesting things to see. Tall ships often being repaired in dry dock. Restaurants and pubs, National Waterways Museum, and boats moving in and out of the docks.
N. R.
Lovely place to visit. Plenty of parking, shops and restaurants. Can get very busy but fairly quiet at the moment due to the pandemic. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
K. S.
Lovery night time lighting on the docks.
P. E.
A great historic canal basin with moored boats. Many food outlets around the dockside. Retail units nearby. Good parking.
R. P.
Lots of shops and eateries, and on a lovely sunny day you can sit outside by the quayside looking at the boats.
J. R. (.
Lovely place to walk around. Lots of history. Shopping centre not far from car park and plenty of places to go for a drink or have food. Only down side was trying to oay for parking as the machines weren't working properly wouldn't accept and cash or contactless payments, had to pay either via the pi asking app, phone or on the website but it wasn't made clear what to do as there were many people confused about the situation and were asking us what to do.

The former dock estate has become a popular free destination where visitors can enjoy interesting views and a range of modern facilities while wandering around a remarkably complete example of a Victorian port. Views include many fine warehouses and other dock-related buildings that have been found new uses. Where ships once discharged their cargoes, there is now an ever-changing miscellany of visiting narrow boats, smart motor cruisers and the occasional yacht or tall ship. The whole area is suitable for wheel-chairs.
T. H.
Refurbished docklands area now full of bars, resurants and shopping outlets. Also a couple of museams. Restoration has been done very well keeping a lot of the areas character with old cranes, railways buildings now used for visual benefits to any visitor
v. v.
Lovely docks. Good shopping centre with big brand outlets. Good parking.
Traffic signs not good had to u turn with signs for restricted vehicles or face fines.
A. F.

Absolutely gorgeous place to visit for the day. The only problem is the hering gulls flying everywhere as they have they babies to protect and that can cause issues,
w.
Nice walk. Reasonable info. Good shopping centre.... but thus is a review for the docks.
Honestly, not a lot to see.
G. H.
