Reviews of Nature in Art
P. H.
Lovely few hours went for photography exhibition well worth a visit but so much to see inside and gardens. Food in cafe was really good and friendly staff.
C. H.
An interesting place to visit with plenty of various types of artistic genre's. As there is quie a lot of things to see outside it was good the weather was favourable. Inside the House were a good selection of Paintings, Sculpture, Carvings etc. etc. so plenty to see. There was also an outdoor studio with exhibits from local artists. A Cafe Inside provided a selection of food of a good quality. Supplied by helpful and obliging staff.

Beautiful place. The art in the house is stunning, lovely outside space, very nice cafe and wonderful staff.
L. D.
Lovely place. Great art exhibits, friendly staff and nice cafe
P.
This is a lovely place. Out in the countryside yet close to the city. My two grandchildren (age 3 and 5) were booked on a 'Paint a Pot' session and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Catherine and Penny were brilliant and couldn't do enough to help and encourage. We then went for a coffee and cake in the cafe (not Catherine and Penny). The cakes also were excellent! A tour of the museum with a chat to the embroidery lady and resident artists, followed by our picnic in the grounds completed a great day out.
S. D.
What a hidden gem! Fascinating museum with a variety of pictures, sculptures etc related to nature. Sculpture park outside, artist-in-residence to chat to in a separate workshop - very interesting. Lovely gift shop, cafe available. Lovely surroundings, beautiful old building, well worth a visit.
N. P.
Very enjoyable experience, plenty to occupy us for over 2 hours.would recommend.
C. M.
Great place to visit, to combine a love of Art & Conservation. Also fab for just getting out of the City (Gloucester) for a lovely lunch or afternoon tea. Keep an eye out for their special events and Exhibitions. Highly recommended.
L. W.
Really enjoyed our visit. The garden had some fantastic metallic sculptures and we liked the open studios - was interesting to see the artists at work and to talk to them about their pieces. House is stunning from the outside and lots of beautiful pieces with a nature theme.
d. p.
Didn't look around the house itself. A nice little garden too look around with some sculptures.
A small park good for the kids
And a nice small cafe with a few nice reasonably priced food items.
Not exactly an entire day out for what we saw but free to check out the garden and cafe.
W. L.
My favourite place! Exhibits changed frequently, special exhibitions, artists in residence.
Lovely cafe for light lunches and tea with homebaked cakes.
Garden with quirky sculptures made from scrap iron.
Adequate car park, disabled people can park near the front door and there's a lift to the upper floor.
I've taken many friends there for their first visit and they've all loved it!
a. t.
Great place to visit for everyone interested in art. Interesting exhibitions throughout the year based around many different art forms and ideas. Artists in residence are wonderful to watch working and always seem happy to chat and share knowledge etc. We've been coming here for years and always amazed at such varied work from historical to modern. Lovely cafe with reasonable prices and tasty lunches/cakes. Picnic area and garden/ponds with artworks everywhere you go and wild life to enjoy. Fab local country walks.
p. d.
This small centre on the outskirts of Gloucester supported largely by volunteers, offers garden sculptures, a small new orchard of ancient apple species, a learning space for youngsters, an opportunity to watch craftsmen/women and artists at work and a compact but interesting gallery of works of perspectives of nature in art. Then there is the cafe. Simple and equally compact with products made on the premises for snacks or light lunches. Good value.
It deserves to be better known and attended.
M. S.
One of my favourite places it has to be said. Great exhibitions and visiting artists . Lion paintings are something else!! Lovely staff too! 5*
N. O.
A good variety of styles, media and artists focused on the natural world. The weekly change of artist in residence makes each visit different. There was also an exhibition of ceramic work by David Burnham Smith who was a new discovery - loved his work!
W. K.
Nice local museum, entry fee is £5.25, lots of works from local artists has plenty of parking, disabled access including a lift to the upper floors, nice gardens with sculptures and a children's play area, also has a café, has a really nice atmosphere, house is more of an art gallery a good way to spend a couple of hours.
J. M.
Lovely morning spent here. Well worth a visit.

K. T.
Superb gallery w an excellent exhibition policy. Very good standing collection. Beautiful local environment.

We had a lovely visit on Saturday 17th July. Truly an amazing place with a great exhibition of birds that my husband enjoyed. The garden was a delight as well, with quirky sculptures made from garden and farm tools. Would definitely recommend this place, especially the cream tea!
A. T.
Really good displays in a lovely building with cafe too
S. A.
Brilliant exhibition of a variety of artedia and loved the sculptures too. We'll stocked shop and welcoming staff. Good value for entry fee. Still stringent Covid precautions and green /Red light entry system which seemed to go to pieces when a party of school children arrived and we all happily mingled in large numbers (which didn't bother me at all but might others) will definately recommend and an ansorbing 2 hours enjoyed
Thankyou
T.
Loved this place. Some splendid wildlife focussed art, paintings, ceramics, glass & sculpture. Nice people
J. S.
Beautiful museum and gardens. A little hidden gem.
H. D. S.

C. S.
Fabulous weekend spent there with TWASI. Staff very busy in the kitchen, but were friendly and food etc was good. Museum is very interesting, containing paintings, sculptures etc and a shop. I love the artist in residence, which changes weekly....which I aspire to do sometime.
D. S.
Lovely staff. Great photo exhibition. Very child friendly. Unusual outdoor exhibits. Artist in residence.
D. D.
Great place to bring the children (9 and 11 yr olds) and see some excellent art and crafts.
C. W.
Superb location. Excellent art of all types, paintings, prints, sculpture in wood, metal and ceramics boh inside and outside.
Open currently Thursday to Sunday. The cafe is worth the visit on its own
This independent museum really deserves your support if you love nature.
M. N. (.
Lovely, beautiful surroundings and garden. What a gem, swimming in invertebrates. Unusual for Gloucester. The tea room/coffee shop is very pleasant, but perhaps needs slight improvement/sprucing up; don't read gentrified. My wife and I had coffee and cake. The (filtered) coffee, could have been more fresh and the cakes certainly tasted home made. My kids attending an art project, which used mainly recyclates and snipped flowers and leaves to make a lamp; very thoughtful.
g. r.
Fantastic place to go so calming great art work and an amazing cafe staff are loverly worth the vist
R. G.
Great place to visit. A different display every few weeks. I also like the activities and the chance to see artists at work. I have been on courses there with some of the best artists in portraying the natural world there too.
I. W.
Excellent exhibition. Various mediums and styles from the artists. A gentle couple of hours
T. M.
A great place to meet up with friends. Also look at life from a different direction
P. W.
What a fab place for children and parents a like lots of activities for the chalder and sculptures and a nice walk to enjoy
S. T.
Seldom open to the public I was keen to have a look round. I was welcomed in, and visited the gardens but didn't go round the gallery - such a lovely hot day I couldn't really go inside!
Installations in the garden were inspiring and hard to capture their essence in photographs.
T. E.
A wonderful space indoors and out and a great annual gift fayre with lots of beautiful quality handmade work to buy.
R. L.
Lovely museum for both children and grownups
R. G.
A favourite place for me to visit. Lots of different exhibitions throughout the year with a unique nature based theme, and artists in residence through most of the year. Talks are given on a monthly basis and the education department runs courses for all levels of art skill and school visits. There is a garden, play area and coffee shop
l. c.
This is a quirky and fascinating gallery housed in a beautiful building. Staff (volunteers?) are friendly and helpful and there's a cafe and ample car parking. Definitely worth all.of the £7 entrance fee.
A. R.
Very interesting place with lovely art in attractive surroundings. When we went they were showing the British Wild Life Photography entrants. Apart from that special exhibition there are many interesting exhibited in the house and garden. The entire place is quite relaxed, and it could maybe do with a kick off paint to smarten it up, but it is really interesting. The building itself is attractive. There was a party of primary school children going round and they were absorbed and obviously having a great time. There were enthusiastic helpers with them and there are already many opportunities for children to learn about and experience art.
We had a coffee in the cafe; that was slightly disappointing since it was merely filtered coffee in one of those machines that keeps it warm all day. In these days of more interesting coffees this was a bit of a let-down.
The shop was a delight however. Full of interesting items, cards, stationery and worth while investigating for gifts.
If you do visit, make sure to see the large flower canvas "The Flower Cycle" by Rosalind Wise in the stairway, this is a sight to behold indeed, and week worth the visit in its own right
T. L.
Nice to explore
C. A.
Lovely place to visit, loved the outdoor theatre!
r. D.
Well worth visiting, good cafe and art installations outside, inside numerous floors of photographic art.
l. ..
Interesting venue just outside Gloucester...plenty of free parking...Good size cafe...fair selection of snacks, hot and cold..plenty of cakes, teas, coffee and chilled drinks , also available..
Friendly service...
Lots of exhibits to see in the grounds...Art work to view in the main building..
Well worth a visit...Children's rustic play area...
M. J.
Always has interesting art work on display. Lovely garden and sculptures too.
D. H.
Beautiful at gallery in a lovely manor house style focusing on nature. They have some great paintings and sculptures.
They regularly have good events, there was a craft fair when we were there so the kids made some paper flowers.
Their guest exhibitions are also worth a look. We saw the national wildlife photographer of the year exhibition which was fantastic!
Very reasonable entrance price and we didn't sample the cafe but I'd have liked to.
M. A.
Nice quiet gallery in an old manor house. Small cafe.
Make sure you visit the craft centre check out the unique cards and the interesting metal installations in the garden.
J. T.
Just newly opened because of Covid restrictions bookings had to be made for house, garden and tearoom online. We got there to find our house and garden visit had been booked for the same 1 hour slot which isn't do-able. The staff were doing their best so we were happy to compromise by viewing the house and then because it was a lovely September day having lunch in the garden where there are many installations to look at.
l. g.
Very interesting. Stunning works of art. As a vegan, the animal in industry display interested me.
s. s.
Great little museum and art gallery. Mixed old (1600s) with new 21st century. The live in artist is amazing look out Goole you have a sculpture of hers on the way!!
S. P.
Interesting visit for anyone interested in art or animals or both. The cafe is clean and well priced. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Artist in residence is good as there are different people each week. Art workshops are food value but must be booked early in the year.
M. D.
Fascinating displays - and we have been visiting for over 25 years! Café staff cheerful and welcoming - and afternoon tea was a delight!
J. W.
Lovely art work and friendly staff. Lucky to choose a day when the artist Colin Meredith was in attendance. Colin was very approachable, interesting and a very talented artist. Had afternoon tea in the cafe and the cakes were superb. Only thing was it was seen in around 2 hours, otherwise it would be 5 star. Still well worth a visit.
C. D.
We went to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. The photos were amazing but the images would have benefited from more space around them. The cafe was good, the service was good but perfunctory. The whole place had a slightly austere aloof feel. A smile costs nothing.
D. P.
Great place to visit lots of amazing art.
C. B.
Cannot stress enough who beautiful this place is!! Everyone was very friendly apart from one of the ladies in the front desk not the best in customer service nor friendliness she was pleased to say goodbye to everyone not welcoming them. But the artist Barry walding is amazing and he is such a gentleman when speaking to him and his artwork well where do I begin its fantastic and so realistic its genuinely a pleasure to be able to say I spoke to such a legend and amazing artist would definitely recommend to anyone and it has wheelchair access
m. H.
My wife and I love to see the photographic exhibition held each year, which is always stunning.
S. H.
Very interesting display of wildlife photography. Really useful to see details of type of camera / settings used.. I'm a wheelchair user & only just managed to fit in lift as it was very small but receptionist allowed us to check I could get in it before paying as all display was upstairs.
J. H.
You would never guess, from it's proximity to the urban landscape nearby, what a little gem this place is. Hidden down a long lane which opens up to the driveway of the house, beautiful in its own right, this is a treasure trove of the most exquisite artworks relating to nature and wildlife. All kinds of media are represented, from wooden, glass and metal sculptures (both inside and out in the gardens), traditional and contemporary style paintings, to the most amazing photographic work and the exhibitions change often so there's always something new and wonderful to see. The cafe serves lovely (and good value!) light lunches and homemade cakes and the staff are so friendly and helpful too. I've just been to see the incredible talent of local glass artist Amanda Lawrence, whose latest exhibition here included a perfectly matched collaboration with local childrens' story writer Christine O'Neill. Amanda depicted some of the wildlife featured in Christine's latest book, "The Wrong Sort of Dark" about a little girl who wasn't used to the different nature of countryside darkness to that in the town. I loved how the exhibition took us through Amanda's walking researches of the area and the thought processes, stage by stage, that went into the making of each piece. Fascinating. Looking forward to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition in the New Year and to the many other exhibitions planned for 2017. PS It's a great place to take children as there are so many activities there that they can get involved in but be aware that many book up early as they're so popular!
J. K.
Nice little find. Fab art work inside and sculptures in the garden. Lovely little tea room with delicious cake and coffee.
S. P.
Lovely small attraction in a beautiful location. Interesting collection of art in the two downstairs galleries, and we saw the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition upstairs. They lost a star for me because the cafe staff seemed upset that we hadn't booked a table (we were a group of 8 who didn't mind whether we sat together or not) despite the fact that nothing on the website or on arrival told us we should book. Good manners and a smile would have gone a long way!
H. H. B.
Great exhibition as always (wildlife photographer). Food, service and atmosphere in cafe always Fantastic! We will keep supporting and returning whenever possible. October craft fair a good way to stock up on unusual Christmas presents.
D. B.
Fabulous place to see fantastic art, great cafe and beautiful house
a. c.
Really good place to visit especially on several occasions. A lot of the art work down stairs in the 2 rooms does not change that often but the art and sculptures upstairs does and there are also theemed events like the photographer of the year that is always worth a look as it is split into age groups. There are some really good youngsters photos there.
There are also either 1 or 2 artists in residence there for a day or two to chat too and watch them work.
Many items to buy from them or the shop. Relax in the cafe
Become a friend
K. S.
Currently The British Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition on - wonderful photos, the best I've seen for a while. Also Linda Heaton Harris ceramics, amazing. Today and tomorrow a craft fare - there are some lovely things for sale - great for some Christmas presents with a difference. Staff are always friendly and helpful and there is a nice cafe.
E. P.
Lovely place to spend a few hours
T. S.
We're regular visitors. Today we saw the 2019 British photography award pictures. Just stunning, as always. Two artists in residence too! We will be back, it's a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
P. C.
Even when not open you can slip in for a wonder round
R. A.
I have left off writing this review until now because I have mixed feelings about this place. I hovered between 3 and 4 stars. First some context, because I think it might have contributed to my slightly underwhelmed response on the day. I went with no idea of what to expect. I was offered a spare seat with a prebooked group that was going. The day we went the weather was absolutely miserable. We arrived after a 2 hour coach trip to find that we couldn't park straight away because the carpark was full and that there was only two toilets in the ladies, with no space to queue. I had been told to bring packed lunch which I was glad of, because another party had booked out the restaurant. When we did get into the restaurant for a cup of tea in the afternoon it seemed pleasant, however the service for just drinks was very slow and the hot chocolate my friend ordered had a big lump of undissolved powder in the bottom.
I feel that the entrance price was very reasonable, taking into account the small size of the permanent galleries and adding in the fact that there was a couple of events on that more than trebled the art there was available to view.
On a sunny day I think the gardens would be lovely to walk round and there is a small amount of outdoor seating available for those packed lunches. Close to the house, the gardens are formal and have some interesting sculptures to see and they become more naturalised as you move further away ending in overgrown brambles and nettles. Over all there is an informal, relaxed feel to the place. It's strength seems to be the events and workshops that it puts on. Highlights of the day for me were the sensitive and thought provoking work of Derek Robertson in the two rooms downstairs and the beautiful work of Martin Ridley that was in an outbuilding. I was also pleased to catch the Wildlife Art Society International Annual Exhibition, situated in a marquee outside. In conclusion, I would go again but only if there was a talk, artist or event that I particularly wanted to see.
J. D.
A wonderful gallery of nature related art. Excellent visiting exhibitions which are always interesting and the chance to see artists at work and talk with them about their art. Add in an excellent cafe/ restaurant and you have a perfect day out.
R. J.
Good outdoor area for children which is free, cafe with good area good shop and staff can pay to see art exhibition
D. A.
It is always a pleasure to visit and grab a coffee - fascinating exhibits, amazing staff and a lovely tranquil garden.
R. D.
This is a lovely manor house on the edge of Gloucester with really nice exhibition areas (both inside and out) for various forms of art. There is a coffee shop on site and you can take a stroll around the gardens. Ample parking on site. Definitely worth a visit.
T. A.
Very friendly staff. Smallish museum with 5 rooms of mixed old & modern art. Lovely to look round and set in beautiful grounds and building.
D. W.
Wonderful display of many styles of artwork. Very well presented. Everyone so friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit.
P. W.
Went to see the British wildlife photograpy exhibition. Some fabulous photos. Well worth going although it finishes on the 22nd December. The World wildlife photography exhibition starts on Feb 4th 2020 so will definitely visit that.
Good cafe with a small but varied menu of home cooked food. An interesting array of books, prints and gift items in the shop. There is wheelchair access.
Due to Twigworth closing soon for Christmas there was no artist in residence to see this time. That is usually very interesting. Staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful.
Would highly recommend a visit especially if you are a keen photographer or artist.
G.
Great little place full of surprises went expecting very much and was pleasantly surprised. I love the sculptures made from agriculture related scrap metal.
K. K.
Lovely spot in historic house. Interesting variety of paintings sculptures etc. Friendly helpful staff. Cafe and shop. Accessible to me in my manual wheelchair though lift a little tight.
P. A.

Well worth the visit.
J. W.
Lovely place. Great mix of outdoor installation art and wandering around a characterful old building filled with all kinds of different artwork. Regular visiting exhibitions.
A. N.
A great place to visit, a magnificent Statley home with some great pictures. Blown away by the standard of competition in international photographer of the year - worth a visit. Also a good cafe for food but limited choices but the food was excellent.
E. R.
The quality of the sewing from the Wye valley sewers was outstanding. Only Nature in Art holds such a varied programme of events making a membership so worthwhile. In the last few weeks I have been to the following events - Gold work embroidery, sewing on the wildside, a great local lady doing fabulous paintings and Bromoil photography demonstration. Added to this a cafe with friendly and helpful ladies serving great snacks. High value membership which would take priority when deciding which memberships are worth renewing in this challenging financial time.
L. W.
Interesting paintings, variety of images and objects, some extraordinary, many very beautiful. Worth visiting. Good cafe too
s.
Lots of varieties of incredible art.
A. K.
