Reviews of Hereford Museum and Art Gallery

The small, free museum is housed in one large room and tries to cover the time from the formation of the first rocks to the present day with special reference to the Hereford area. There are a few interesting exhibits but generally the displays lack depth. Allow about 20 minutes to visit.

We visited on a rainy day and spent about an hour here with our 2 children. Its on one of the upper floors of the building. There are little activites dotted around the room the room that kept them engaged. Aimed at providing a historic account of Hereford with local finds. Free entry, with toilets onsite.

Small museum, only allowing 10 visitors at a time. A varied and interesting collection.

Some good exhibits, particularly a beehive in which you could see and hear the bees. It was totally fascinating. Only had half an hour there as they shut quite early, but seemed pretty small anyway. Not sure if we missed some though. Had to climb up some stairs.

Nice little museum. Hereford history was very interesting. Loved the tiles and Roman sections

Interesting collection of various artefacts from the local area. I was recommended this by a friend for the stuffed sturgeon and two headed half. I was certainly not disappointed in that respect. The museum is a way a collection of different types of museum all thrown together by their shared link to Hereford and its environs. The seemingly disparate collection does kind of 'work', but perhaps more thought needs to be made into creating a narrative that more easily be followed. Just a bit of money and a revamp is all it would take to make this an excellent little museum!

Needs a lot more space for its artifacts. For example last I went Anglo-Saxon-Tudor was in one display case. A thousand years of history , arguably the high point for Hereford as a city during that time. Staff/volunteers almost all are friendly and often enthusiastic just really needs a big refurb .

Fascinating overview of local history; especially liked the beehive!

I hope the lady on the reception was just having an off day, as we all do, and she’s usually as helpful and cheerful as all of the other staff I encountered.
Limited selection for business and finance, great for the children’s section. I’ll continue to use for my children but for university studies, I’ll continue to use Perlego.

It's a good local museum with a small annex where the art gallery is. The current exhibition by a local artist is very interesting. It's a pity the building is so dilapidated and the whole place is really much in need of some cash to move it from the 1960s and into the 21st century

Small, but has cool weird beehive. Could be better

We went to see a specific art exhibition a year on Stonewall Hill which was brilliant and well curated, one of the artists gave a delightful overview so as this has now finished I can't speak for other exhibitions but a lovely and convenient venue in central Hereford above the library.

Museum itself is pretty small but we went for the Lego Bricks exhibition. Again this wasn't massive but my son enjoyed being able to play with the bricks. We also enjoyed looking at the Lego history scenes. It was £3 for an adult and £2.50 for a child entry to the Lego exhibit.

Museum features some textile history and just a few pieces of art. There was several interactive pieces for kids- milk pails to pick up and soldier dress up, magnetic mosaic pieces etc. We were expecting a bit more.

Lovely little museum with all sorts of events going on at. Staff are nice and very helpful. However, it is a little small so the exhibitions can't be too large

Nice.
The Hereford Museum and Art Gallery is a local museum in the center of the city Hereford. You can find it in a Victorian gothic building. It was opened as a free library and museum on 8 October 1874 and has since exhibited artefacts, fine art, and decorative art associated with the local area.
There are regular temporary exhibitions of craftwork, paintings, photography, and prints. Having closed temporarily for building repairs in September 2015, the Hereford Museum and Art Gallery re-opened for the summer months in July 2017. As of July 2017, exhibits in the museum include a two-headed calf, a two-metre long fish, swords of every shape and size, elements of costume and textiles, as well as objects of historic, social and scientific interest dating back from the pre-historic era up to the 20th century. The gallery currently boasts over 80 works by Brian Hatton, as well as many of his materials and selected letters.

Ice Age Herefordshire. Very informative exhibition.

Small but interesting museum of artifacts found around Hereford, unfortunately the exhibit of a local painter was not there on the day I went. Takes about half an hour.

Saw the Grayson Perry exhibition, lovely venue and helpful staff!

Had a display of lego there today very interesting. A lot of the models were related to Hereford

This remains a local favourite despite removing the Scold's Bridle and putting it into storage, along with many other 'folk' items.

There were bees 🐝 in a display case, live ones that were coming in through the wall.
