Reviews of Withernsea Lighthouse Museum

I visited here on 26th October and this light house was officially closed (out of season) but we were still able to gain access as the place was manned, which was very good as my daughter really wanted to go to the top of the light house.
This is a museum at the base and in season also has a cafe and gift shop with a nice large grass garden at the rear that you can get service from the cafe at.
Inside the lighthouse some old artifacts and information can be found before taking the 142 step to the top for a spectacular view of the tow and ocean.
The stairs are steep and can be very tiring if your not able bodied but the do have a large step/platform in several places where you could rest. The final 21 steps are very steep like ladders and may be restrictive if your not able bodied.
Its well worth a visit for the view for the top. A lovely place and friendly helpful staff.
R. S.
What a fabulous look into the past and the history of this wonderful building. You can go all the way to the top, but it is a 144 step climb to the top and the last bit is a steep what I would call boat style staircase climb.
As you climb the stairs you can look down through the centre of the lighthouse all the way to ground level so don't try it if you're afraid of heights.
When you get to the top you can look out over Withernsea and the surrounding area for miles around.
This was the best value entertainment to keep the kids quiet for an hour that we spent money on all week.
S. G.
I'm not really sure why we went here because myself and my 10yo freak out a bit about heights, but the view from the top was worth it! The museum part has lots of memorabilia and there is a section on the actress Kay Kendall who was born in Withernsea. There's a little tea room with outdoor seating but we didn't purchase anything from here.
D. S. (.
Friendly staff. Nice cafe attached. Beautiful views from the top. Reasonable prices. You get a certificate to say you've successfully climbed to the top. I thought that was a good keepsake.
J. G.
Fantastic experience. Long climb but the view was worth it. Very interesting museum
K. S.
Really lovely. I had called and inquired whether they were open in the week and got a lovely response and very friendly person to answer the phone. We went to the cafe and the service was so friendly and we even met Captain Tom (adorable).
As for the journey up, for us, it didn't seem that long up but it did catch us breathless!
All round friendly people and I'm happy I got to pet the cat.
R. J.
Great views at the top of the lighthouse and an interesting museum. Worth a visit if your in the area
J. R.
The lighthouse was quite interesting and exceptional value for money. Aside from the tower the museum held some interesting stories too. I did keep thinking about the missed learning opportunities from it's current usage though; "look kids, this is how mobile phones work".
The cafe was pretty good value too; the cream was out of a can I think but given that other coffee shops charge you £3 for coffee and £3 for a slice of cake to take away, you really can't complain at £2.50 for a sit-in cream tea. I'd definitely recommend it for a couple of hours visit.
B. R.
The grandchildren loved it,quite a challenge, all those steps, especially the last flight, not for the faint hearted, a good view from the top.Lots of memorabilia to look at. A cafe with a beautiful garden at the back with plenty of seats. No onsite parking, roadworks at the moment, with 3 way lights,so on street parking with a small walk. Not sure if there was a restroom, but I'm sure they must have.
C. L.
Great place I stayed in the garden with a pot of tea, while the others went upto the top of the light house.
C. V.
Quite a climb up the 144 steps but worth it! Unusually located lighthouse. Interesting little museum and a lovely garden and cafe
A. H.
We love Withernsea and the lighthouse is somewhere everyone should visit. The view from the top is wonderful. We visited the cafe on our last visit, less than a month ago, which is unbelievable for the very cheap prices. We sat in the sunshine (where the children followed the treasure hunt activity) and enjoyed tea and cream and strawberry jam scones. We had to check that the price of £5 was a actually correct.
T.
If in the area you must visit this place. Not for the faint hearted alot of steps as you can imagine but plenty to look at at floor level too. A museum and the history of the great actress Kay Kendall who lived a few doors away. Lovely tea room and garden. You get a certificate if you can climb all the stairs. There is a great view from the top with a telescope to use also.
R. M.
Lovely museum, friendly lady on the front desk, kids enjoyed it. Cost £8.50 family ticket, dogs welcome. Beautiful lighthouse with amazing views from the top. Nice cafe and good museum. Just a short visit but worth it.
P.
Fantastic place to visit. Full history of withernsea and the lifeboats on the North Sea. Built in land due to the coastal erosion. Also included is the memorial museum to Kay Kendall who's most famous film is Genevieve. The lighthouse itself is accessible by 144 steps on a spiral. Certificates are issued after the trek to the top where the views are wonderful especially on a clear day. Staff are helpful and will answer any questions that may crop up. School trips are also welcome
P. S.
Great experience. A Bit risky going with your dog but still doable.
K. M.
Really interesting museum, mostly focused on lighthouses and lifeboat history along this treacherous stretch of coast, but also has sections on coastal erosion, the history of Withernsea as a seaside resort and local Hollywood starlet Kay Kendall. The view from the top of the lighthouse is great too, if you can manage the climb! Tremendous value for £3.50.
K. S.
It was quite an experience climbing the stairs to the top of the lighthouse with an impressive view of the Withernsea coastline. There is quite a lot of memorabilia on display. All in all, an enjoyable few hours spent in the Lighthouse, garden, and cafe on site.
S. W.
Love the light house went to the top amazing views,144 steps to the top,
K. C.
There is a museum as well as the walk to the top of the lighthouse if your not scared of heights. Very amazing views.
But be prepared for people crossing on the staircase either though they are meant to wait, can get out of breath climbing up.
C. H.
Lovely place to visit, lots of interesting memorabilia. It is a nice view when you get to the top. Once you have finished visit cafe for tea and scone
T.
£8.50 for a family ticket, lovely gardens to sit with a drink from the tea rooms. Toilets available and a lovely view from the top...but 144 steps to the top thighs will burn
R. H.
A inland lighthouse. you can climb the tower for the view and a little museum to pad out the visit.
J. G.
Great views and an eclectic museum, also a lovely tea room , with a very pleasant garden.
P. W.
A lovely and interesting place to visit with its local museum at the bottom and great views from the top. Also very helpful and pleasant staff.
I. B.
Them steps are a killer, but reaching to the top is a eye full, the view is beyond anything can imagine, yes I will challenge it again. I won't for get the scones nice we love it.
A. R.
Wonderful place we found by accident. My daughter explored right up to the light but I didn't make it beyond the first few steps. There were lots of sections with different things to see and learn from. There was also a cafe but we didn't have time to stop there.
J. I. (.
Little museum, small cafe, lots of stairs and breathtaking views. Tickets £2.50 each for adults valid all year round. Free telescope included at the very top. Not sure if it's good for very small children as the steps towards the top get really steep. Overall really enjoyed it. Oh and also it has a beautiful garden in the back of the cafe where I've heard they sometimes do afternoon tea event
A. L.
A must see when visiting Withernsea. Only £3 each for entry, £2 for kids. Climb the steps up to the top then a final push up a steep ladder but well worth it for the view. No obvious car park but can park free on aldi around the corner.
C. C.
Amazing cafe with entertainment for the kids. Lovely staff. Well worth a visit both for the cafe and for the view. They provide a treasure hunt for the kids with a little prize and gave us adults a good 40 mins of peace. Can't recommend enough
J. W.
If you're brave and energetic enough to climb the stairs to the top, the view is well worth it. And you can have a nice cup of tea in the cafe when you get back down
P. E.
Walked up to the top good views all round ,nice lighthouse friendly staff
C. B.
Lovely place to visit small museum on the ground floor with disabled access round the back .Lovely little tea room and garden at rear very reasonably priced lovely cake well worth the entry price if you have an hour or so to spare
D. W.
Absolutely fabulous. Great little museum. And the view is stunning from the top ❤️ well worth the climb. 😊 …
s. m.
Friendly staff and well kept....alot of stairs but worth the view at the top. Nice little cafe on site to replenish your energy after the climb.
J. R.
Well worth a visit. Views from top are great. Little cafe and garden to the bag is nice. Staff are great.
s. h.
Lovely little museum, with lovely views from the top. My little girl loved ringing the boat bells 🔔
P. E.
This is a strange location for a lighthouse which is located in the town centre and makes it an interesting place to visit to find out why it was built there. Also makes a good subject to photograph. The cafe is interesting and has some historic photos on the wall, the garden has good seating locations, there is small annexe with some artists exhibits. Just now (July) there's the most wonderfully tall (15feet) plant growing which I think I'd Echium Pinnana. Well worth a visit.
D. J.
Enjoyable visit not to bad climbing up all the steps, we'll laid out museum
W. C.
Good views & interesting collection of coastguard equipment.
Steep steps to the top, so not particularly suited for those with a bad ticker.
I. E.
Great little museum only £3 to enter museum and light house, its a lot of steps to get to the top but the view is worth it and the money goes to its upkeep, there's a little tea room at the rear with a garden, definitely worth a visit.
L. F.
The best lighthouse I've ever visited in England! The lighthouse is beautiful inside and out. The history of it is amazing and the views at the top breathtaking! I'd have taken it home and put it in my garden if it was possible! This is well worth taking a drive from far just to see it
K. T.
Small museum ,lots of interesting things to see ,friendly staff ,and if you like heights you can climb to the top of the lighthouse ,fantastic view
J. O.
Totally amazing place very informative, lovely staff great views well worth a visit.
J. T.
Excellent took the grandchildren age 6 and 8..lots to look at. They went upto the top. View was amazing they said. Well worth a visit if you go to Withernsea.

K. K.
Kids loved it, a lot of steps, not for the faint hearted
G. T.

k.
What a place! Fantastic opportunity to see the sea from above. And museum, garden, cafe. Well worth to visit. Highly recommended!
R. 2.
Lovely place, friendly staff and nice wee cafe. Well worth the entry fee (which is cheap - £8 for a family ticket) to have a look round the lighthouse and museum.
A. G.
Great place to visit, incredible views and really good little museum with some incredible artifacts.
M. N.
An interesting local museum with the bonus of a climb up the lighthouse. Good value, highly recommended.
L. B.
Great fun activity and experience.
Staff are really informative and helpful and tea room is great 👍 …
F. M.
A must see when in Withernsea 144 steps to the top a museum and garden quiz for the children also a cafe
G. R.
Very reasonable priced. Dog friendly. A nice look back in time. Grandkids loved it
A. S.
We thoroughly enjoyed this visit. £3 each for adults, lots of models of seafaring, ships and activities, lifeboat memorabilia, a long walk up the staircase to the top of the lighthouse, great views from the top. Local history in the cottage to the rear of the lighthouse, originally the keepers accommodation. Cafe in the rearmost room smashing drinks at very reasonable price.
Nice cake too. Lovely garden to the rear with tables and chairs for enjoying your refreshments. Pet friendly as well.
One of the outbuildings in the garden has been turned into an exhibition space. Currently holding a photographic exhibition of Pebbles and Poems, and a physical exhibition of embroidered works by a local artist. Exhibition items are for sale. All well worth a visit.
K. G.
Lovely museum very interesting. People very friendly. Lots of local history stories including Kay Kendall who was born in the town. Great views at the top. Steps steep but worth the climb.
s. c.
Great little place takes up half hour of your time, don't mind paying a couple of quid per person for memories, I got scared and couldn't go up! Didn't tell the people on reception so they still gave me a certificate!
D. R. (.
The museum part is interesting with plenty of Withernsea history. The views from the light house are amazing, the walk up is steep so not for everyone. Finish off with a brew in the lovely gardens. A nice way to spend a couple of hours.
G. G. B.
We visited the gallery (an exhibition by poet, Dean Wilson), & had tea & (delicious) cake in the sanctuary of the rear garden - from the cafe that is located beneath the lighthouse. So relaxing, & good value for money. Recommended. Since I am not good with heights, the lighthouse was bypassed.
F. P.
We would do you a diservice fo describe the contents of this lighthouse. Suffice to say, it is an excellent and highly interesting place to visit and a fabulous adventure too. There is also a lighthouse cafe We loved our visit...
A. W.
Love this light house been admiring it since I was a child. This time we were 4 generations. My mum, me, my son and grandson.
J. E.
Great place to spend an hour with the kids and the views are worth the climb to the top of the lighthouse
E. A.
Lovely little museum of Withernsea's past. The climb to the top and the fantastic views are well worth the entrance fee alone. Lovely little tea shop in the back, and lovely people.
R. G.
Very fun attraction for a quick trip and nice little challenge of walking up all the stairs. Very worth seeing.
K. D.
Lovely place to visit, fab photo opportunities, also a tea room, what more can you ask.
C. W.
very hard work getting to the top of the lighthouse.. but wonderful views when you do. Love the museum and the cafe. always a warm welcome. Very pleasant to sit out in the sunshine with a tea and a scone.
A. G.
Lovely staff very polite and helpful excellent cup of tea cakes delicious 😋 very reasonable prices , ok garden furniture seen better days but didn't detract from the garden in the sunshine all in all a nice experience 😀 …
J. R.
This is worth a visit and definitely worth the climb to the top. The kids really enjoyed it, the museum section and artifacts are an added bonus. Cafe, toilets and volunteers are all very good.
T. V.
Fantastic museum and coffee shop. Interesting and informative. Views from the top are impressive. Lots of steps!
C. T.
Great afternoon. You can't be afraid of heights to go up this one. You could stay on the ground and have a look around the museum and visit the tea room. Sit in or out in the nice garden area at the back.
A. S.
Made it to the top and claimed our certificate. Part of our group had mobility issues so had to wait at the bottom and enjoy the surroundings. We were locked out in the back area without notice and had to struggle to lift a mobility scooter down the step to get out.
P. M.
Historical museum of Withernsea including its seafaring and celebrity history. 146 steps to top gallery and a lovely tea room and garden out back.
Worth a visit.
A. T.
Lots of old memorabilia and a certificate for climbing to the top!
N. C.
Really interesting lighthouse which is on a high street road!!
Very helpful staff and it has the town's tourist information area and info on a Hollywood star that lived there.
Apparently you can see the Humber bridge on a clear Day.
Worth a visit and if you get to the top you can get a certificate!
T. N.
Friendly volunteers who will answer any questions, fab view from the top. The tea room is lovely with indoor and outdoor seating. Homemade cakes are to die for.
R. W.
Lovely lighthouse with small museum and cafe
J. W.
Very informative, can climb to top of lighthouse , great view if you can manage climb of 144 steps and not afraid of heights, very friendly staff ,and lovely little cafe with home made cakes , great visit there is a small admission fee 😀. …
R. N.
Lovely little museum and to be able to climb up to the top of a Lighthouse was so cool. Thoroughly recommend for £3, plus you can return again in the same year for the admission price 👌 …
M. D.
I went with my daughter and grandson. The museum is well laid out and the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. There is a treasure hunt for kids in the museum and a prize if all of the items are found. My daughter and grandson went to the top of the lighthouse and enjoyed the view across the sea. If you struggle with heights the walk up the stairs can be a bit scary. We didn't use the café but it had a pleasant atmosphere. There are toilets behind the building and a lovely garden to enjoy a sit down, snack and a rest. Excellent value. We loved it and will be going back.
T. R.
Beautiful place. Wonderful staff. A short visit but a lovely one.
H. A.
Facinating history, amazing views and well worth visiting. Very friendly and welcoming and excellent value for money.
G. G.
Small but fascinating museum of many aspects of local history.
Well worth the walk up the steps to the top of the lighthouse for views over the town and surrounding area.
J. C.
A great if not really scary place to visit. Climbed the 144 steps but no floors inbetween. Not for the lighthearted but definitely worth the view from the top. Even made it down. A must try event 👌 …
C. S.
Little tea room in there is lovely, nice garden too. Museum n lighthouse are great.
C.
Great little trip up the lighthouse. Not for the faint hearted but the view at the top was worth the narrow steps. Little one got a certificate at the end to say she had completed the climb 😊 …
L. V. (.
Lovely museum and loved being able to see out of the top of the lighthouse! Has its own little cafe, but we didn't stop there so cannot comment on that. Well worth a visit if you are in Withernsea!! Takes about an hour to go round
C. D.
Interesting visit 140 steps to climb to the top and a beautiful little cafe at the back serving delicious coffeeand cakes little activities to do with kids as you make your way around will definately go again.
j. s.
Lots of steep steps but worth it for the view at the top. Interesing museum. Good place to go on wet day.
S. R.
Awesome. Friendly staff and a well kept museum full of information . Some great views from top
J. D.
One of very few attractions in Withernsea. Well worth the climb to the lamp room. Very steep steps at the top. Not easy for children but manageable with care. Not the clearest of days on our visit but could still see miles in every direction.
M. A.
It's a great lighthouse museum with lots of history! N a staircase where you can climb.....but u must have a head for heights!! 😃😉👍
N next door but a few.... there is a nice great pub aswell.! Serving nice drinks and refreshments! 😉👍
D. R.
Awesome little place. £2.50 for adults, £1.50 for kids; under 5s free. Must admit the climb up the tower was too much for me so sadly I can't comment on the views (my 4 year old out manned me and kicked off because I wouldn't take him up). My 5 year old is autistic and immediately had a meltdown, but the staff were brilliant. Got his attention focused on a puzzle game to find objects around the rest of the museum, with a prize for getting them all. More than expected and greatly appreciated. Highly recommended!
J. B.
Lovely little museum at the base of the lighthouse, with a lot of local history to share. A fabulous RNLI section leads you to the stairway.. A trip not for the faint-hearted awaits!
Climbing the steps to the top (144 apparently) will reveal a stunning view over the town, countryside & out to sea, weather permitting. (certificates are available, as proof you made it)
Out back, there's a tea room for refreshments, cakes & light snacks.
Best of all, it's inexpensive & so easy to get to. Highly recommended.
K. H.
The Lighthouse was worth a visit a climb to the top and very good views.ending up in the team room which was very nice.
C. 2.
Bit pricey for what it is! The man on the till could of looked a bit more enfusiastic very quiet and not chatty stall could tell he didn't want to be there. Overall nice views but be prepared for a workout.
F. W.
It is a place that is very interesting covering the history of withernsea and the lighthouse itself. The view from the top is fantastic, make sure your fit as the steps are a killer but worth it. The cafe serves great food and the staff are helpful and volunteer their time.
P. W.
The lighthouse is definitely worth a visit although it's quite challenging walking up to the top but we'll worth the effort .there is a cafe on site for a nice cup of tea afterwards.
S. H.
Interesting plus the bonus of a nice tea room.
h.
Theres not really much to do in Withernsea, I wouldn't really call it a tourist destination, more of a small village on the coast. But we did attend the light house and my children enjoyed it
*Warning*
I wouldn't bother with this if your in any way scared of heights or if you struggle with steep stairs. The climb to the top of the tower is both steep and and narrow so it does become really scary for those who don't like to be high up.
R. R.
Lovely little place to visit when in Withernsea. This was our second trip up and the kids loved it. There is a quiz to do round the lighthouse and if the kids get all the way to the top they get a certificate. Very reasonable entry prices (£2.50 per adult) and interesting to visit.
P. C.
Expected more information about lighthouses, not a film museum. Spent about an hour there. Climb to the top was excellent. Quite expensive for what is on offer, but did meet the needs for my daughter who had some homework to do with Lighthouses. Won't be rushing back though.
S. R.
Been wanting to go for years. Finally managed to get in. Looking up its very daunting. The wife made it to the first window befor the nerves kicked in. Me and the kids made it to the top and what an achievement it felt. If you are a bit nervous of heights then don't do it. Going down is worse than going up.
Nice touch is receiving a certificate for making it to the top.
There's a nice little museum to wander around and a reasonably priced cafe to have a cuppa and reflect on what you have just accomplished.
It has to be a must visit attraction on your list when here.
D. L.
For £3 you can't go wrong and your ticket gives you free access for the whole season. Withernsea isn't that nice a place, but this is a little diamond. Interesting stuff about coastal erosion and lots of info. There are also some files to look at in the cafe attached. To the rear is a pleasant lawned area. Worth a look.
s. c.
Family ticket £8.50 today. Kids loved it will only take you 10 mins.
M. U.
A place you need to visit when in Withernsea! Great views and very friendly and helpfull staff!
K. T.
Beautiful view from top of the lighthouse. We visited with our 2 year old and she loved climbing the 144 steps to the top
s. m.
Small but interesting museum. The climb to the top is long but you are rewarded by excellent views from the Humber to Flamborough. The cafe is very reasonable to and on a warm day sitting in the garden is a pleasant reward for the climb!
B. R.
Great place, superb views and informative
S. W.
Well worth the visit. View from the top spectacular. Lovely, simple tea room and garden. Charming museum with a top notch Hollywood connection. Make the most of wonderful, querky attraction.

Always a great visit to climb to the top & see the town from above. The staff are always friendly & welcoming.

Well worth a visit. Very interesting. Not suitable for people frightened of heights. The cafe is really reasonable with lovely homemade cakes and luxury coffees.
K. S.
Really enjoyed looking at all the objects and reading about the history of withernsea. Has a lovely garden with tea room which is an added bonus. Kids loved the game finding objects and reciving alittle gift aswell as a certificate for going to the top. We will definitely be back.
J. S.
Lovely quaint place, a must see for its history. Kay Kendell actress memorabilia in one of the rooms as she lived in this area. Well worth a visit, credit to the volunteers who run it.
P. P.
Go in with an open mind, then be very suprised at the exhibits on show.would you belive a famous person was born around here and made it all the way to hollywood( mmm intreaging hey). Then up the lighthouse ,142 steps not for the faint hearted (top bit very steep ) but the view is worth it, you can see for miles. After you make your way back down (carefully) go into the lovely back garden and get your breath back with a nice drink and a bite to eat icecream only 50p.The entry price is only £2.50 per adult and £1.50 per child and any profits go to the R N L I . A good cheap educational few hours in Withernsea.Thoroughly reccomended.
s. s.

Good cheap place of interest, climbing to the top was scary but was a great treat, well priced cafe.
Possibly one of the last good things to do in a dying seaside town.
K. G.
Lovely little museum and great view, relaxing little garden at the back
M. H.
Lovely attendants, very interesting to find out the history behind the lighthouse and the local area. We'll worth a vist!! Oh and you get to walk up the steps to the very top!!

Great view bit of a tough climb.
D. D.
it was built a bit inland to avoid the coastal erosion along the coast. It's quite a climb to the top but the views are worth the effort.
D. w.
