Reviews of Christchurch Mansion
P. R.
Lovely house and surrounding grounds. Ashley gave us a very interesting and informative run down of the houses history and the families that have owned them. The paintings were fantastic and there are some really interesting rooms. We had a pram and could go around the ground floor using it and there was also the use of a child changing facility

Christchurch Mansion is a fantastic Grade 1 listed Tudor Mansion House free to enter and run by the Council . I found it very charming and an interesting step back in time .
I was very fortunate that I visited when the Recreating Constable exhibition was on which was cool . I was surprised to see a painting of his called The Ascension having always related him to country scenes . It was a very entrancing painting I thought and worth the visit to see this alone . Unfortunately the exhibition is only temporary .
Nonetheless the rest of the house is certainly worth seeing . It was built by one Edmund Withypoll around 1548 . In one room there was some 16th century painted wall panels which caught my eye at least . Thank God for our DIY stores I don't believe I could do as good a job as this . One room also had a collection of musical instruments including a Harp get them . Again my musical talents are zero and my voice even worse . By this time I had realised I would certainly have been divorced had I lived in the 1500s .
There was a cool painting of the famous and talented Joshua Reynolds and one of Sarah Churchill I believe . A very interesting toy collection shows how to live before play station was around .
Charming staff , interesting sights and a few hours well spent . Well worth visiting in my humble opinion .

Not many historical places that are still free to visit. Set in probably 90 acres of beautiful parkland & wildlife. Nice snacks all freshly made. Very interesting place to visit.
Thanks
Glen, Jorjia Matt & Lux.
P. H.
Very interesting place full of fantastic artifacts depicting the different times of the mansion. Also great to see the Constable paintings
S. A.
What a great time we had looking round the museum with the great Black panther costume display to the rooms set out in various time periods. The kids liked that each room offered something different and the adults loved the art and the history. Unlike some places we have visited recently this has obviously been taken care of and maintained pretty well so well done Ipswich borough council teams. For a free entry it's such a great thing to fill an hour or so and of course surrounded by the amazing park too.
R. H.
I hadn’t been to CCM for years, but I stumbled in on a rainy day last month - the place was fantastic. Interesting exhibits, friendly staff and a contemporary spin on lots of the objects in the collection. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
M. S.
Really enjoyed visiting Christchurch Mansion. A wonderful insight into life at the mansion over the centuries; a treasure trove of antiquities. A must see. In addition, we were treated to an exhibition of 'stories' around equality and diversity which included histories of Marvel comics!
J. L.
We turned up expecting to pay and got a very pleasant surprise; it’s free to enter! There is art by Constable and various portraits not uncommon in stately homes. There are a few wax figures giving you a better impression of who once lived there and the rooms are set up to give you a snap shot of life. Really enjoyed it here and there is the added bonus of some contemporary art as well, a real breath of fresh air! The gardens are extensive and the tea room is excellent, the food was delicious and the staff were very friendly and generous with the portion sizes. If nothing else, visit the tea room.
H. P.
Great place to visit, really interesting exhibits, displays, and rooms. Staff are really helpful and friendly. There is a lovely tearoom/cafe which serves tasty food and loved the variety of things on sale in the gift shop. As a wheelchair user the ground floor was very accessible complete with a disabled toilet and there was disabled access to the Constable painting exhibition. Highly recommend a trip.
C. M.
Interesting and historical house which we visited on a rainy afternoon. Very welcoming staff, parking area for buggy and changing area for babies. Ashley was an excellent guide who is clearly passionate about the house - he's well informed and funny!
G. B.
My brother and I visited here today. Had a walk around all the rooms, very interesting and important links to many historical Ipswich families. Also went to the John Constable paintings exhibition. Just wonderful.
S. F.
Interesting little house. Some great carved wooden panels in some of the rooms
E. L.
I visited Christchurch Mansion for the Power of Stories exhibition. Which I enjoyed a great deal. I was also able to look around the mansion which has rooms decorated and set up in period style. Really lovely. I highly recommend.
J.
Beautiful historical building. We attended a wedding here.
Open for visitors. Some rooms are laid out as they would have been and others are steeped in artwork.
B. K.
Very interesting and cool, joined a small tour of people who were being guided by one of the volunteers, had a snack in the court yard. Good time was had by all, fascinating art gallery.
J. S.
We recently visited and haven't been for some time.. we visited because we had some family who visited Ipswich and you can't not visit Christchurch park and the mansion.
Staff are very friendly and helpful.. loads of people visiting at the same time.
B.
What a great building. Crammed with room after room of fascinating artefacts and art. Great cafe and helpful staff. Lovely location in the park. And it's free!
R. S.
Loads to look round, lovely staff
S. L.
Lots to see. Would have had some lunch in the cafe but no gluten free options.
L. R.
Nice period museum. Great for something to do for an hour or two & it's free! Staff on hand to talk through the history of the property as well.
B. S.
It's a good manor to visit if you are in the area and/or interested in the history of Ipswich. The surrounding park grounds are ok just usually busy. The children's parks are always full.
M. W.
Mansion is full of history. The art gallery is always a good place to vist
j. w.
Situated in a park but we didnt have time to walk round it. We went to the Gallery to see the John Constable paintings, and enjoy the building they were in. Lovely to see some of his lesser known works along with Gainsboroughs and other local artists. You expect to have to go to the big London galleries to see such works, so what a pleasant surprise to see them in a quiet civilised setting. Afterwards we went to their courtyard cafe. Their chocolate and orange cake was delicious. All the staff were friendly and helpful.
J. C.
Fascinating old mansion with an amazing historical collection. Every room has treasures tucked away! The prayer closet is remarkable, and there are beautiful works of art around every corner. The grounds are lovely and relaxing, great for a picnic, a stroll or family time. Don't miss it!
T. D.
Brilliant! The mansion was super interesting and informative. The park is gorgeous and well worth an hour too))
A. W.
I found it relatively interesting but others may not. Depends upon one's interests. The staff are very knowledgeable which is very good.
M. C.
Nice museum. The Constable exhibition was not too stimulating, but worth a visit
P. H.
No parking, but worth a visit. Rooms nice to look at kids will enjoy the old children's room. Art gallery is same but they do have some good exhibitions at time.
M. J.
Lovely place to come and visit with your family.
W. W.
An amazing Tudor mansion, with it's park providing a wonderful oasis in the town of Ipswich.
C. N.
Went with a guy we were teaching and he was able to teach us as he led us around the museum. He's getting Baptised, so it was an awesome day to bond and just see some victoriana era things!
R.
Nice way to spend a couple of hours, lovely art gallery and lots of interesting information about Ed Sheeran. Mansion itself was lovely and well cared for.
T. O. T. D. Y.
A really great freem museum/ house with period furnishings and lots of different room themes. Tea room excellent too.

I visited constable exhibition, there was a well-chosen music and the displays were amazing
C. H.
A surprisingly wonderful experience. The park is glorious and the house surpasses expectation. ...both interesting and educational and full of beautiful objects and paintings...an Ipswich must.
M. A.
A very beautiful palace located in a corner of a very beautiful park. By visiting this museum, you seem to travel to years ago and spend time for that moment.
j. m.
Amazing. So much to see
W. S.
Nice place to visit many things to see inside the house. There are many interesting place to discover around the mansion.
H. E.
Always wonderful , my favourite place to visit after decades of loving and visiting. Congratulations for keeping this beautiful place as it should be but balancing this and the need to attract visitors from different walks of life. Please keep up the great work and working for more great exhibitions.
P. S.
We visited as part of the Power of Stories exhibition. We hadn't realised before we arrived that we could tour the mansion, so it was a bonus trip really! Different rooms are made to resemble the way they would have looked in different eras, so it was fascinating to see how the building would have changed over time. We didn't have much time there, so it was a speedy trip. I would love to know more about the history of the house, I expect there was something there telling us about it that we missed! Great gift shop too.
K. H.
I had never heard of Plank Panther but the exhibition helped me to understand about the history of it.
Christchurch Mansion is always enjoyable to visit.
B. V.
A historical place with interesting insights of the Huguenot refugee crisis during the middle ages. There is also a free tour on Sunday at 2pm, don't miss it if you are there.
F. S.

j. d.
Amazing place. And for free. Lucky people. We will be back.
E. H.
We enjoyed our time in the house thoroughly. Lots of things to see, the rooms were beautiful and the lovely staff members/guides were knowledgeable and so enthusiastic about the history of the items which I always like. Overall an interesting, free museum.
N. F.
Came across the mansion whilst having a wander round the Christchurch park area. Such a lot of history inside, skillfully displayed and complete with detailed descriptions. Spent a good hour here looking around. And all for free!
M. R.
Lovely park and well kept.
One of our family favourites to go to on the weekend!!
m. c.
Nice gallery and very interesting house, though annoying to be in Ipswich a week after the Constable exhibition finished!
S. L.
This is a fantastic old building, formerly a Friary, with regular historical contents and a series of exhibitions. The present one is about John Constable and his contemporaries.
M. B.
So peaceful, well kept and added bonus of Ed's memorabilia
R. B.
Free to visit with various exhibitions usually on you can't go wrong. The mansion contains a wealth of information about Ipswich Town and the history of the house and park. Plenty to see and do for all ages.
M. W.
This place is easily the equal of any of the National Trust ‘stately home’ type attractions in the region, particularly in terms of house interiors - and it’s free admission too! Time well spent, and will happily visit again.
A. M.
Very friendly staff, beatiful collection!
U. M.
We had a great time visiting this beautiful building.
So much to see. Great exhibits. Friendly, helpful staff.
O. k.
Nice walk in good weather, also nice with a brolly. The mansion is free and great to give the kids a look at the old world. Worth a visit with family and a picnic with ice-cream from the cafe afterwards.
M. F.
Fascinating place.....so crammed full of objects, you will need a week to do it justice!!!
E. H.
Lovely place to visit. Lots of history and a lively ta shop. The Kiss by Rodin is definitely worth a visit and the mansion itself, is very interesting.
R. W.
Always love to visit this place it’s a good place to go and learn about the history of the mansion and the town of Ipswich 2 floors of interesting rooms and some beautiful pictures on the walls they have these beautiful amazing grandfather clocks
F. R.
A very beautiful old house in Christchurch park with an excellent exhibition of John Constable his works and his friendships, family and influences.
s. h.
A jewel in our heritage crown - and such lovely welcoming staff and volunteers
k. C.
I went to see the Power of Stories exhibition and it was really good. They had the Black Panther costume on the display and loads of other interesting things, celebrating comics and Black History.
A. H.
The kids enjoyed this one, especially the old toys and the amazing dolls house!
K. R.
Beautiful historic building with museum and art gallery in lovely park with wild woodland sections all free admission.
A. M.
It's great as you don't have to pay but feel free to donate we v were the only visitors at the time but only 2 of the staff interacted with us. Several staff standing around chatting to each other. I felt that it was a bit lacking in information and some rooms weren't open.
M. S.
A rabbit warren of corridors to get lost in and wonder at the amazing exhibitions and decor. Two enthusiastic thumbs up 👍👍
R. K.
Great place to look around. It's free and you get to see some vintage items, and obviously the mansion itself
V. P.
Interesting Museum I enjoy the Constable Art Exhibition.
T. W.
Lovely place to visit. Grounds have some great wildlife too.
C. B.
Very english. The tour inside the mansion Is free (and worth It)! You Can take a nice walk around the garden!
C. A.
Well worth a visit. Great knowledgeable staff.
J. O.
Very nice place to visit. And free entry.
M. S.
Ipswich’s art gallery and mansion of history nestled within on of Britain’s finest town parks with ancient trees. A beautiful place to visit and get away from the hustle and bustle of the town
G. F. (.
Brilliant place to visit both inside and out. Best of all its free ^_^ lots to seenin the museum and has come great exhibits. 👍
C. L.
Power of Story exhibition is well worth a visit.
I. C.
Very friendly staff and lots to see despite certain areas being closed off due to Covid restrictions. Whilst not an Ed Sheeran fan , the exhibition was still interesting and complemented the other local boys (Gainsborough and Constable ) a large collection of whose works were displayed later on. The room settings were excellent with some really interesting pieces of furniture and informative info boards. The Great Hall and the unusual way that The Library and the Rococo Room interact with the space at the top of the stairs (with two large window-like openings and two false doors ) make this a fascinating place posing so many questions.
Only minor negative - too much of the Tudor overmantel in the Servants Hall was masked by what looked like a bacon back curved settle (nice piece of furniture in its own right).
A very enjoyable visit. Loved the unusual bands of white inlay in two items of furniture in the Dining Room ( not ivory but horse teeth !)
Look forward to coming back again when the other rooms are open.
Incidentally the Mansion is only a short walk from the town centre where Sparrowe's House (aka The Ancient House - 15th cent) has really good figurative plaster work around the windows and don't miss the Public Library (1924) in Northgate with delightful animal carvings around the original main entrance.
B. D.
Lovely mansion with lots of bits too see, good quality information and lovely staff. It's near parking, town centre and is in a lovely park with scenic trees.
A. B.
A great venue for a half-day visit. Amazing mansion house with a genuine medieval feel, lots of wood carving and creaky stairs... Also a very good art gallery with temporary exhibitions well curated. Ask to see the small Constables. The park is great too.
B. J.
Little historic gem. Be prepared to be there most of the day inside it! And it's FREE ADMISSION!
N. B.
Lovely grounds, the Manor is well documented for a self tour, and the people there are helpful.
K. G.
At the moment, you have to pre-book your tickets and wear a face mask and follow a one way system to get around the mansion. I went today to finally see the Ed Sheeran exhibition. Which was a wonderful exhibition. The mansion itself is wonderful to visit anyway, and and it was lovely to just follow the one way system round, I was able to see art work I had missed on previous visits.
M. H.
Magnificent Museum, Absolutely Fantastic Constable Exhibition.
M.
Christchurch Mansion is a beautiful Tudor mansion set in the magnificent grounds of Christchurch Park. The house lots of very interesting things to see, especially the Victorian Wing.
N. L. T.
Went to see 'The Kiss' (Rodin). Great display and very informative. Visited the rest of the mansion while we were there. Interesting facts about the building itself and the local area. The park in which it's set is also beautiful and perfect for a picnic and to let the children let off steam. Sincerely hope some funds are heading towards the upkeep of the mansion itself. I used to visit with my family as a child and it is sad to see it crumbling and starting to need a good deal of attention
B. K.
Very good
R. R. (. R.
Good but warm as no windows open
V. H.
Well laid out - interesting place to visit
A. E.
We loved the Ed Sheeran exhibition. A small exhibition but a very intimate exhibition, with exhibits from Ed's childhood and early career. We particularly liked seeing the lyrics of some of his early song writing. Well worth a visit.
J. B.
Excellent event to mark the jubilee for the Queen.
B. N.
Really lovely place to visit. Lots to see. Very entertaining
H. B.
A really interesting free museum in the middle of Ipswich.
We enjoyed a temporary exhibition, (at this time - March 2019 - Rodin), a very reasonable lunch, guided tour & back to the tearoom!
A really good day out & highly recommended.
C. D.
An interesting place to visit with some Gainsborough and Constable paintings and at present the Kiss and Tell Exhibition of Rodin and Suffolk sculpture and Constable life sketches. There is Rodin's iconic The Kiss as the highlight making it a five star visit. It is all free with only a donation asked for.
P. “. B.
We popped in here specifically to see the Kiss & Tell exhibition. We weren't disappointed. Apart from The Kiss there were several other works which we found really special. Whilst there we went round the rest of the venue. Some interesting pieces. We'll worth a visit
R. L.
Beautiful house in the centre of Ipswich. I can highly recommend the Ed Sheeran exhibition if you are a fan, especially as it's free (you have to book though).
Make sure you leave time for a visit to the tea shop 😉
J. B.
My kids loved it and I did too - well organised, and friendly staff.
K. R.
What's not to love with a place that has Gainsborough's and Constable's. A querky, warren of a gallery/museum, based on a much altered Tudor mansion. Besides a good deal of great art there are rooms devoted to the objects and costumes of different periods. Much to see, a coffee shop, and set in a lovely park. Only downside is the lack of parking
L. D.
Great seeing the Power of Stories exhibition. And the Mansion is a beautiful place. Great staff
P. C.
Lots of friendly staff and lots to see. Constable exhibition is excellent.
m. h.
Lovely museum to have a look around. So many interesting objects and exhibits.
J. B.
Small museum and art gallery with friendly helpful staff, gift shop and café. The art gallery regularly carries works from local artists such as Constable and it's great to be able to see such fabulous paintings without having to go to London. Gallery is free and situated in a lovely park, ideal for a quick visit.
M.
This place has been on my doorstep for years and I've never been inside. There is a considerable amount more history to this building than I realised, including a room with 10th century panelled artwork which was very impressive. Entrance is free but you can choose to make a donation if you wish.
S. F.
Amazing mansion, great historical resource, better than many National Trust places and FREE!
L. H.
Visited the kiss and tell exhibition which is currently inside the mansion. The exhibition is free and only available for a short period of time. It is worth a visit to see the sculptures up close and the amount of work that goes into producing the work in detail.
J. G.
At 11 o'clock most days there is a tour of the mansion. Our guide was most interesting and informative. We learnt so much about Ipswich and the mansion since it was built in the 1500s. I recommend a visit. A jewel on your doorstep. There is also a nice tea shop too!
K. H.
Informative pleasant wet day activity. Free. Visit tea rooms very nice menu.
M. C.
Free entry, makes for a nice place for family's. The cafe is nice. Both my father and sister got married here. The staff are great and always welcoming.
R. D.
Rodin exhibition really added to intrinsic beauty
M. S.
A classic Tudor mansion with a free museum inside. As well as being interesting just 'stepping back in time', the art collections by John Constable and Gainsborough are superb to view. There is a cafe attached to the mansion with seating outside in summer.
K. L.
Had a lovely time walking around the mansion. The history inside the mansion was amazing and I learnt so much. The staff there were very nice and friendly. A great place to visit, and free to look around.
B. C.
An unexpected treat for visitors to Ipswich. A fabulous collection of art and sculpture in a free museum. At the moment The Kiss by Rodin is on display. There are also several Gainsborough and Constable paintings to be seen. A great tribute to Ipswich and Colchester Councils who are managing to keep this impressive facility open and free to the public. Don't miss it on your next trip to Ipswich.
K. S.
Brilliant to be able to see such a fantastic piece of art as 'the kiss' in Ipswich. The mansion is beautiful and well worth a visit. Nice cafe and beautiful and historic gardens.
J. S.
Well worth a visit lots to take in and see especially costumes and historic information and details of this part of the UK. If you have an hour to spare why not visit Christchurch Mansion and also maybe relax and have a picnic in the park.
M. K.
Probably not the best place to take two under seven year olds, but they enjoyed it anyway. Very thoughtful of the place to have a little play area, which the children thought was great. So many staff there all trying their up most to make your visit an enjoyable one. And to top it all, it was FREE.
S. G.
The house was interesting but nothing to keep the children interested. Wouldn't recommend for children but adults can have a nice day out on there own. It's free so i can't complain too much .
A. G.
This is a lovely place to have wonder on a rainy day. And the Thomas Wolsey exhibition was an interesting step back in time.
Personally I was thrilled to see the horse riding sadle that Queen Elizabeth used.
The coffee shop is priced resonably price and a delight.
H. B.
Wonderful old house, now exhibiting Rodin's The Kiss. Well worth a visit, and free entry!! Have walked in the park but never been in the mansion and would have missed a gem . Go and see for yourself.👍
l. m.
Lots of pets but too many people
C. D.
Fantastic museum. Make sure you get the kids quiz from the shop before you start if coming with young children.
K. O.
Fascinating place with some excellent Constable and Gainsborough paintings. Its even got a Picasso and a Pissarro. Interesting historical exhibits too all in a great setting. And it's free.
C. F.
Part of the art collection was closed off, so we never accomplished our mission. However the museum/art collection was quite interesting. We will return when we have more time and the new exhibition is in place.
s. b.
Gardens and grounds were wonderful!
F. G.
Stunning historic location that given the opportunity, is well worth a visit followed by a sandwich and some tea in the coffee shop. With the stunning park to then stroll around looking at the various fauna and flora, this is a lovely way to spend a day.
S. Y.
Historic Treasure frozen in time. From the kitchen , servant's domain to bedchambers beautiful displayed .Fine collection of Jacobean painted screening.
Could improve on information/ description of exhibits.
J. B.
A somewhat rambling, cluttered sort of mansion with objects, furniture, clothes, paintings and so on. But throw in a good temporary exhibition, like the "Kiss and Tell" show that was on when I went, and it goes up a gear. I especially liked the way they mixed modern sculpture into the 17th Century knick knacks, making a virtue of the rambling nature.
F. W.
Somehow, Christchurch Mansion has again managed to attract a world renowned cultural icon - Rodin's 'The Kiss'. Congratulations for bringing what The BBC describes as "one of the frankest and most popular images in the history of art".
M. A.
A very interesting museum with lots of interesting exhibits and paintings. The Ed Sheeran Made in Suffolk exhibition gives an insight in to the making of Ed Sheeran, intimately portraying his creative and musical journey whilst celebrating his strong connection to Suffolk and its people.
D.
I visited the black panther exhibition well worth a visit! Covid restrictions in place and a very insightful exhibition!
a. f.
Excellent new exhibit, great views and good facilities
S. A.
Went to see Rodin's the kiss, (temporary loan from the Tate) which was well worthwhile. Constables well worth hunting out too. Friendly knowledgeable guides. And it's free too!
J. F.
Great place to learn history
J. G.
Staff were friendly and the museum itself was very interesting! Would recommend
G. M.
Always a great place to visit and something new to see; this time we took two 5year olfs round 'The Kiss' with all their questions patiently answered. Then played with the brand new tea sets.
H. S.
The staff today were very friendly and helpful to myself and my Granddaughter. Thoroughly enjoyed the trail. My granddaughter was very involved finding all the objects around the house. Thank you

Interesting Building giving insight to life in 17th Century with rooms set up as they may have been at that time.
Lots of portraits and regular changes of events.
T. C.
A fascinating 16th century mansion housing a remarkable collection of paintings and social history artefacts. There is a fine collection of toys, a rewarding recreation of a 19th century kitchen, and some distinctive reconstructions of peridot living rooms.
D. B.
Great for a free bee. Interesting to see. Ed Sheeran display on currently. Huge park to walk round. Worth checking
H. T.
Great place to spend a few minutes or a few hours, in the gorgeous setting of Christchurch Park. Lots to see including historically representative rooms, art and activities.
