What an absolutely lovely couple of hours spent learning about this secret gem of a place. So much local and naval history brought to life by the very knowledgable and passionate guides who obviously have very fond memories of their time here

The museum is a great resource for any one who served at Ganges or has family or friends who served there.
The museum staff are all very helpful and friendly.

Served my time here in the very early 70's and I think it closed down shortly after. Unfortunately I didn't get to climb to the top of the mast. I just got to go about half way up. Had good times here training as an MEM (stoker) before moving on.

My husband was at HMS Ganges in September 1962. He was very emotional to see all the memorabilia. A pleasant 90 minutes spent in the museum. The volunteers were very helpful.

Homely, well stocked local museum, ran by enthusiastic volunteers. It is sited on the coast at Shotley, across the water from Harwich. It celebrates and commemorates the HMS Ganges which was used as a training ship for the Navy. At least one of the volunteers was trained there and acted as a lively, interesting host. Exhibits include models, photos, badges and medals. There is a small amount of memorabilia for sale. Free entry, but remember to put something in the box.

I was lucky enough to go there as a sea cadet being entered into swimming and diving contests at the age of 12. I had to pass for a 15 year old but it was all kept under wraps. I did good though and got a few seconds considering I was up against young lads in there late teens. The dorms were a real eye opener and made me the man I am today at 59. Oh the years do sail by !

My experience is not about the museum, but of the 12 months spent there, as a boy seaman in 1963, immediately from school.
Life was very strict, as you`d expect in the forces,we had to climb the mast, about 150 feet high, very good views. If one was really a bad boy, the cane was given, across the buttocks( 2 marks crossed,2 shillings and six pence was given as a reward, but this rarely happened;the process was called Cuts of the Cane,I did not have it, coward!
It certainly made a boy into a man! I have no regrets, only that places like that should be kept open for our youngsters who have trouble with the day to day way of life!!

I stayed here on a goalkeeping course in 1982 for a week !! Great memories of this place using the swimming pool which was freezing canteen rooms etc the view On a early summer’s morning was fantastic!!! It was like a real naval base with a barrier at the entrance and white mast off a ship !! Sad to see it in demise great times 👍🏻😩

Plenty of parking for a visit to the museum. I only went into the museum, didn't walk in the grounds (not sure if you actually can?!)
Extremely informative inside with a vast collection of photos, books, uniforms, data...everything to interest the History/Navy buff. Well worth an hour or two.
