Reviews of Abbey Pumping Station Museum
C. C.
Free museum that we stumbled across whilst visiting the Space museum next door.
The staff were very friendly on arrival. Inside there is a nice collection of well presented exhibits looking at local history as well as the main pump room which has the machinery inside.
Overall a nicely presented museum - worth a visit if you are in the area.
s. e.
A great free place where you can check out huge steam engines and displays of various aspects of people's lives a long time ago, including toilets, baths, washing machines and cinemas. It's right next to the Space centre entrance so you can't miss it. It has a nice outdoors playground for kids as well.
J. W.
Fabulous little museum. Very well worth a visit. Be aware there is no food or drink available there though

A very interesting museum, steam engines, household improvements over the years.
Entrance is free and a play area for the kids, £3 parking at the space centre next-door.
A. R.
Nice place Can be an additional visit after the National Space museum. But it feels old and needs to become more interactive.
T. S.
Fantastic place and free lovely guide into the history of the pumping house , friendly staff
c. p.
Never been and i always walk past on our canal walks. Finally went in and was so interesting! Great to see things created in Leicester !
S. F. P.
A lovely museum. Beautifully restored Beam engines and old/vintage steam engines and vehicles like buses and a coal burning chip van, lots of interesting interactive activities for kids. Good facilities and a lovely play area. It has a small coffee shop with basic tea/coffee and juices, my hint would be to take a packed lunch/picnic. Don't forget it's a free museum. Parking is pay and display at the Space Museum just round the corner from the pumping station. £3 for the whole day until 5pm. The train trip on site costs 50p per person and goes round some of the site and back again.
C. G.
First visit to the Pumping Station, very busy and interesting day, especially the steam miniature engines and a steam record player
s. N.
Fabulous place , we did the steam day experience, well worth the money ,
Knowledgeable volunteers who run this
K. G.
Small but interesting exhibits of early engineering & home technology within the setting of the original Victorian pumping Station. Very friendly & knowledgeable staff. Could do with a refreshment area or even a drinks dispensing machine. Thanks for a good visit
R. V.
Not a big museum, but lovely building, good exhibits and free entry. Definitely recommended.
G. C.
It's free to visit. Also, it's right next to National Space Centre.
R. L.
Brilliant visit.
They have been busy with access improvements so it is now more wheelchair accessible.
A great place for Young ones as well as the more mature. Look for events on the Web.😈
R. S.
Great collection of memorabilia, old fire engines, double decker buses, huge steam beam engine, a few interactive exhibits... On event days often a small stream train running as well. And a playground for the kids.
b.
Often take my son here after school, its nice and quiet.
We also visit on train days. Always friendly staff
S. T. T.
We visited in the winter and on a day when the pumps were not in steam. The four pumps are magnificent feats of engineering.
The rest of the site is set out for educating children and adults on the way things work. There is a fun display of the way a flush loo works and the pipes to the main sewer. Children and adults are entranced by flushing the 'poo' down the loo and watching it end up in the main sewer.
There is also an exhibition on cinema projection, laundry, knitting.
Must go back when the pumps is running.
S. M.
Lovely Steam Train from the first world war, and Victorian beam engine and museum
S. A.
Not been for about 10 years but a really great place to visit.
D. N.
Interesting place to visit. Free entrance.
h. l.
Free entry good fun for all the family it is required a donation. Very interesting historical facts. It all works but you need to look when they turn it on as the main pump is only used once a month. Contains lift for disabled peoples to get around and is fully accessible by wheel chair ramps. Parking in here is free. Little train rides for kids just outside.
V. J.
Fantastic place, lots to see and do for all ages, we went the steam train and the chaps on there were great with the kids
A. T.
Good place to visit. It is really interesting to find out the water's and soap's evolution during time. Also there are some great collections about Leicester, like the history of trams.
A. M.
I liked the museum, very interesting tour, heard about the museum for a long time, but could not get to, we got there, loved it)
A. A.
Great museum with lot's to do with kids. Also on site cafe available. Great outoor playground also.
S. J.
A nice piece of history, worth going if already going to the space centre
G. Z.
Amazing museum, my favourite sight seeing place in Leicester, definitely worth a visit if you're around!
S. A.
Fantastic learning experience for kids. Pumping station can be seen in action. It also has a museum style display of how things used to work in olden days.
G. T.
A very interesting museum, with lots of things you wouldn't otherwise expect to see.
B. H.
Took my young lad here. He loved it and so did I. They have a good amount of stuff in there as well, the thing that we loved was the water when you flushed the toilet and watched the water go though the pipe and once you have finished inside you can go outside and do some more stuff so you spend at least a good hour there and also it's free but can also donate if wanted. Definitely worth taking a visit there
J. W.
I thought this museum was amazing. The old beam engines have been preserved for posterity and look well cared for.
k. b.
Great place to take the kids and have a look around. Well done.
d.
Great factual museum with lots of fun activities for the kids
R.
Interesting museum with steam engine. Lots to see. Free.
J. &. L. L.
Quiet, interesting, historical and very well preserved, free admission all in a beautiful building, would definitely recommend.
P. R.
It's a good place to visit, due to being small will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to see everything. If you are really interested you'll be able to stretch that time. Good to take older children with a good understanding of how things were "back then", smaller children won't show too much interest. (Depending on the child of course). Heavy focused on plumbing and rightly so, very informative and interesting with some interactive items to explore. When we visited there was a small train ride opportunity outside but I beleive it's not always available. The gift shop is non existent with only a few post cards for sale. Outside there's a lovely area to sit down, a play park for children where you can also relax and enjoy the weather.
P. H.
This museum is a gem. Free and next to the Space Centre. Covers Science and Technology. It has limited opening so check first. Kids love it. Very interactive.
G. S.
Amazing, I went on the train and enjoyed it every time I've been. lovely cafe too!
R. V.
Good place for a visit with the children and then a walk 3 minutes to the space centre
T. 3.
Fantastic place to learn a little bit of history free entry donations welcome
C. S.
Great history and interactive free activities for the kids. Younger kids will love seeing exactly how things flush down a toilet. The old vintage pumping station is an amazing piece of engineering history.
T. I.
Great free museum and history of sewage in Leicester, plus there's one exhibit that the kids will remember above everything else. If you've not been yet, you'll soon discover it 👍 They have quite a few themed days too, so check before you go.
R. H.
Abbey Pumping Station sits right next door to the National Space Centre, but don't overlook this treasure.
The Pumping Station itself is a beautiful example of industrial revolution engineering, and the museum explains its history well enough for any level of enthusiast to understand. Additionally, the museum houses exhibits on the history and engineering of various common place and household items. From plumbing, to moving pictures, there is plenty to intrigue every mind, and all in hands on and expirential displays.
A short and pleasant walk along the waterway from Abbey Park, Abbey Pumping Station is a firm favourite among our family, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
P.
Very interesting place and it's free which is a bonus
A. S.
Such a cute little place in Leicester with a small museum on Leicesters waterworks and train. A mini train that goes up and down for just 50p per person. A mini electric train that goes up and down for kids with an adult present . Brilliant couple of hours out with a lovely play area for the children
P. I.
The old pump engines are beautiful pieces of engineering. Lots of other interesting exhibits from days gone by.
T. B.
Excellent preservation of 4 giant pumping engines. Must see them when are running.
H. V.
I took my four children for a guided tour. The volunteers were so lovely and kind and patient with my children aged 9,7, 5 and 9 months. They let them touch stuff and climb and have a go on a few things. We had a very pleasant relaxed visit. Thank you!
P. B.
Interesting day out when we went to the steam event
D. I.
Would have got 4 stars, but not fully open unable to go up stairs
D. D.
Great day out for the family. Very educational and the kids would enjoy the history of how water and transport work(ed)s in our day to day life. It's all presented in a fun practical way where they can participate. There's also the cafe and the play area outside to keep their interest.
a.
Not a huge amount here, but lovely building, good exhibits and free entry. Definitely recommended if you're in the area.
E. P.
We had a lovely time. Enjoyed the train ride and nice play area. Volunteers are very friendly and helpful. Lots to see and do in the museum. My daughter loved following the poop the best!
g. s.
Visited the underwhelming National Space Centre today and as we were leaving, noticed the Abbey Mills Pumping Station museum next door. As we'd already paid to park all day, we called in.
So glad we did!
Excellent free museum. Great mock up displays of Victorian interiors, and laundry equipment. You can even flush a loo here and see the whole process. There were even a few bits of Roman water pipe.
Main event is the pair of beam engines. Well worth seeing.
Lots of things for kids to do.
Great place to spend an hour.
J. L.
Such variety of things to see, take picnic/ drink as no cafe, good toilets,
L. R.
A wonderful site for kids and bigger, adult sized kids alike. The grounds are lovely and they have some interesting exhibits on display. There are quite a few interactive objects too.
The beam engines are incredible. There are four 50 ton engines that on vertain days they have running.
Bring a picnic and try to get to one of the event days when they have a small steam train on site and loads of vintage vehicles!
K. S.
Grandchildren love visiting there.
L. S.
Small museum but fascinating for young boys. Full of interesting technical information about water systems and amazing pumping engine.
R. P.
Brilliant place to visit with the family (even after going to the space museum) freindley staff and very nicely laid out, as well all the displays have been very well presented and looked after. The main room was pretty cool although having most of the areas not accessible did seem sad and a CD player showing they were more set up for just doing weddings in that room. That's the only reason for the one star down.
S. S.
Gets better every year. Since the last time we were here, there has been a lot of landscaping with a sensory garden and a children's play area.
The side shed now looks less like a junk yard and you can actually see more of what is there - lots of engines of all shapes and sizes.
The main draw for us is still the beam engines and it is a shame that they seem to now only work one at a time.
Still well worth a visit, and we'll be back soon.
J. T.
Another great exhibition at the museum. If you are of a certain age then the Ladybird Books exhibition will bring back so many memories. It tells the stories behind the art that made the books so recognisable. We'll worth a visit. Well done Leicester Museum team 😀
P. H.
Absolutely brilliant. Only wish I had had more time to experience this place better. Happened to be passing, but if in the area again would call in. Thanks
A. S.
Love it every time I visit!
A. T.
The museum had a nice amount of content and the steam toys in action day was interesting, although I was not impressed that there was such little access around the beam engine itself, compared to papplewick and claymills I have so visited. The exhibitions were good and I enjoyed the majority of the experience, it was just a shame the incredible and grand Victorian Beam engines had such little access.
J. S.
The outside space is well used and has many interesting exhibits, but unfortunately the interior is let down by a failure to make full use of the unique space, and by old fashioned and poorly conceived exhibits.
The museum seems to oscillate between a sociological theme of the changes made to people's lives by new technologies, and a civic development focus, while never fully interrogating either. The exhibits have interesting content, but are poorly laid out and the lack of structure makes the museum a confusing visit. The exhibits contain large blocks of poorly formatted text on poor resolution backgrounds, and I noticed a worrying number of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.
I would very much hope to see a revamp of the exhibits, as currently a unique building with genuine ties to interesting subject matter seems wasted by a lack of forethought and design.
V. C.
Even though it's not a popular opinion I enjoyed this more than the National Space Centre next door. So many things to see that I was lost when I first went in :) Liked all the machinery in place and everything you can do here. Would recommend !
N. H.
Visited last weekend. A hidden gem, all the more impressive as its run by volunteers. I do think they could make more of it by having a more adult themed explanation of the machinery or a guide present but definitely worht a visit.
S. W.
Had great fun looking at this museum with an 11 year old boy, the toilet history amused him! They provide the backdrop to some beautiful weddings and productions, notably Handlebards, who are performing again in July 2018, Shakespeare with a difference - fantastic, fun performance!
T. P.
Excellent museum, the beam engines are incredible to see running.
A. V.
Very nice place and memorable things which I haven’t seen in my life before.
P. K.
Fantastic place. Lots of exhibits. Free entry. Donations welcome.
A. P.
Excellent place to vists, lots too do and learn . Pumps are amazing.
And free great place.
R. W.
Very interesting, I didn't know Leicester had been at the forefront of so many things! Nicely presented. The 4 steam engines are magnificent ! Oh, and it's free ! Please make a donation though to help it continue.
T. S.
Although not all open when I went, we were able to go on a pre paid tour of the pumping area both above and below which was very interesting but it did have to be booked. Otherwise Museum is free, with interesting displays about yester years. It also has a narrow gauge railway, though that wasn't open on my visit. Cafe was open but did not do full meals, found a proper cafe on A6 not too far away that did. Well worth going.
N. L.
It’s ironic next the really expensive dated space centre this little free place is so much more fun. Chasing rubber poo down a toilet us do much more fun. So the irony is on a nice sunny day I’d sooner go here (they have a new park outside) than the crappy space centre
L. B.
We had a fab time there today wasn't packed instruction were clear of which way round you need to walk too just gutted couldn't touch anything
D. G.
Free to enter. Very interesting place. Beautiful victorian pump house and museum. Well worth popping in especially if you've been to the space museum next door
M. P.
We've been here a few times, mainly because my young son likes to put the fake poo on the toilet and watch it flush away, but every time we go something else isn't working. They don't seem to be looking after it any more. It still it's free so if you are passing then pop in.
B. 3. (.
Fun free place to take young children, mainly due to the sewer pipe and sectioned flushing toilet complete with plastic pooh, to be dropped into the toilet, flushed then recovered by delighted children. Amazing building and beam engine as well.
K. E.
Good to visit. Interesting museum. Go when the beam engine is in steam as this is marvellous.
J. P.
Fantastic place to visit with the family, lots to do and see. Highly recommended.
t. s.
The Christmas event is great. Toys , brass band and working machines. Took my daughter in the train. And it's not expensive. We loved it. Felt like Christmas had really begun.
M. R.
Very nice have a park
c. c.
Small but quite interesting. Free entry, small shop and children's play area. Next to the Space centre so worth popping in for a look while you're there.
S. R.
Great day out at the Steam Toys event, trade tent, model boat lake, chip van - all really excellent.. Topped off by seeing the awesome beam engine in motion.
N. B.
Very interesting place & nice to learn about some of Leicester's wonderful history, great place for families and kids. Minus 1 star for the grumpy bloke on reception who didn't even speak when we spoke to him! 🙈😂
H. J.
I love Abbey Pumping Station, I've really missed it during lockdown. Looking forward to visiting soon!!
M. P.
Interesting place and free admission

Great place fun for kids and also educational. Free/donations except for event days. Try to get there on one of the Steam days when the mahoosive beam engines are running!
j. b.
Great place for all the family .lots to see and lots to learn but make sure if you want to see the onsite vehicles that you ask .as they gave us a private tour as the vehicles wernt out on display .and its opasite the national space center .

Mind-bogglingly huge working water pump, come and see the full power of the British victorian technology. The most thunderous bass you'll ever feel. And such nice fairs in August!

S. A.
Brilliant day out , plenty for all to enjoy.
p. m.
Went yesterday to see all 4 engines working, which was awesome, but did not expect so many other displays and activities. An excellent day out for the whole family.
W. G.
Great place to visit with many things too see and a great volunteer group keeping all the exhibits in fantastic condition
J. S.
Very nice place , kids are missing it during lockdown.
P. W.
Great place bring kids show old ways of Leicester, Nice take kids to park afterwards.
L. H.
Engineering museum. If you live a long way from Leicester you may be dissappointed. However, its located next door to the space centre so it can make a good addition to a day out.
A. C.
Originally Leicester's sewage pumping station, there is now a museum of sanitation history and steam power. The large beam engine is impressive to see in operation (check website for dates of steam and other special events).
S. M.
Great place, lovely to see the vintage items, small car park but usable and free
C. M.
It's a lovely place to visit FREE, & there's a lovely outdoor area to sit, play eat or just take 5, in the peace and quiet. . . .
a. h.
Some great history here but no sign of any half term activities going on, despite this being advertised. Not able to access car park either!
A. S.
Continously free and fun - make sure to go on a steam day so you can see the impressive beams at work!
s. h.
Clean tidy, usually free to go, and some events when they do charge are normally reasonably priced. I would recommend the place
D. S.
Great to show the children how things worked back in times gone past. There is even a part where you can flush away a family flush poo.
N. H.
Very interesting museum. Engines are only working on certain days so be sure to book to get a look.
A. M.
Very interesting, beautifully preserved engine and a wealth of industrial heritage information. Well worth a visit and it's free entry!
A. M.
Beautiful place, filled with history & our little one thoroughly enjoyed the train ride!
M. M.
I went there with my family, and it was not I expected it will be. The place is full of different types of toilet flushes and sewage history,. Definitely not a place for decent people to go eww
S. W.
Lovely Day to chill out with the children. Park and picnic area is very clean and tidy.
R. B.
Amazed to see a comment that not suitable for decent people. It's the history of stopping decent people dying from diseases brought on by lack of effluent treatment. A good news story!
C.
Fascinating and free entry!
R. D.
Great fun for all the family. Cheap day out and lots of interesting history in the museum.
R. H.
Abbey Pumping Station is a little gem of a place. Try going when the engines are "in steam", the sight of them working is a wonder of Victorian engineering.

Great museum which is free to enter, located next to the National Space Centre. There are some really impressive exhibits, but the star of the show is the Main Pump Room. It's a homage to Victorian ingenuity and engineering. Well worth a visit.

Such an interesting museum. Beautiful victorian steam machines in full size. Stunning!
