Reviews of Retro Computer Museum

My husband and I decided to visit Leicester as we’d not gotten to explore much the first time we were there. We did a search for Things To Do and came across the Retro Computer Museum. We decided to go even though we wouldn’t get to spend all day there. Had I known how much fun we’d have, we would have planned ahead and left bright and early.
This place is run by volunteers and they are all so wonderful and very helpful. We got a tour of the museum and even had interesting conversations with the volunteers who were there that day. We got to play on unique game systems and they even had a pinball machine and arcade machine! We most definitely will be returning and bringing friends with us next time!

Booked the museum for a private event for what I consider to be a highly reasonable sum.
Staff were super friendly and helpful, making us feel very welcome. Coffee machine was great and a welcome surprise!
Extensive range of machines to use of all genres, as well as the games to go on them. A vague description was often enough for the staff to hunt it out and find it for you.
As well as the usable equipment there are plenty of boxed items and curiosities all around. The more you look, the more you notice!
There is an extensive library of reading material, much of which was for sale.
I can't recommend this place enough and I'll definitely be coming back!

Better than any arcade I have ever visited.
Spent a few hours steeped in nostalgia and playing game from my childhood. The guys are wonderful and clearly so passionate about what they do, highly recommended!

A real gem for anyone who loves computers and games. Was lovely to be able to play on Atari. It's run by volunteers who were lovely, knowledgeable and helpful. It would be so much better if it's refurbished and moved to a bigger place.
A.
Great place to visit, we had a fun time playing on all of the retro computers, nothing is behind glass, if you can see it you can sit down at it and play which 2as great! From retro computers (Commadore Amiga, Atari ST and DOS) to classic arcade machines and consoles (NES, Mega Drive, Gamecube etc). Would definitely visit again. Staff really helpful and friendly. Small shop to buy drinks and snacks is onsite too!

Super friendly hosts! This museum is suitable for both the hardcore nerds and families alike.
Had such a great time talking to people here as well as appreciating the vast spectrum of machines ready to use. Highly recommended.

A great place for nostalgia and to educate your kids. Ran by very friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Fantastic place. Didn't know it existed until recently. So glad I made a visit. So much nostalgic fun!
Extremely knowledgeable and lovely staff. I'll definitely be going back, over and again!

Really good place. Took my 16 yr old Son as a birthday treat we all enjoyed the trip 3 hours flew by. Staff are friendly and passionate.

Fantastic! Really excellent collection of historic computers and consoles. Everything is playable, staff are great and happy to chat about anything you'd want to know about. If you have any interest in gaming it's worth a trip. Highly recommended as it's a real gem. Kids and I spent all afternoon there and we'll definitely be back for more

This place is AMAZING! I physically can't big it up enough. A great little hide away for all kinds of people. With friends, family or alone, it's a fantastic social experience. A great way to interact with new people, or just to have fun! Me, my wife and 2 children really enjoyed ourselves here, with the overwhelming amount of machines and games to play. The staff couldn't get enough credit, they are so friendly, chatty, helpful and fun! It's a really peaceful, yet exciting vibe. A great escape from reality, and a good morale boost ready for the week ahead or a relaxing time after a busy week. Thank you so much! You're doing something really great here. Keep up the good work. I'm really looking forward to my next visit, which I'm sure will be in less than a year ;)

An awesome place for a variety of ages to play games, run by helpful, friendly volunteers. Some sandwiches, snacks and hot and cold drinks available also. There was a pinball game too which had me hooked, and many different consoles and multiple cartridges. Some games such as Quake could have up to 4 players :) my 12 Yr old nephew loved it

Wondrous, delightful space full of fantastic, fun nostalgia.
Highly recommended.
Fab staff, great vibes!

Great retro museum. Fantastic choice of playable machines. Knowledgeable staff. Nice and friendly, awesome large software library and brilliant magazine and book section. Very chilled out atmosphere. Definetly recommended. Looking forward to a return visit.

This place is simply AWESOME! If your looking for a boring museum with exhibits behind glass then third isn't the place for you.
Andy and the team have done an excellent job on restoring and displaying loads of computers, consoles, arcade machines, books, magazines and games. It was like loosing 30+ years of my life and going back in time to when games were fun not just pretty.
The staff (volunteers) are so passionate about what they do and have a vast wealth of information if that's what your looking for.
If you simply want to get hands on with 70's 80's and 90's gaming then this is for you, I can't stress how much fun I had there today, so much so I didn't want to go home.
I will definitely be going back again and even my son said he would also love to.
Thank you guys for such an awesome day, it's the most fun I've had in a long time that made me smile so much

What an amazing place! Truly a blast from the past! They have every video game ever released and you can play it! Such helpful and knowledgeable staff - it was 3hrs well spent - we will be back - such a gem!

There are zero faults to this absolute masterpiece of a place. The staff make the place what it is - very knowledgeable, friendly and outgoing - will happily sit down and explain or point out interesting things to visitors. They invited my dad in even though he did not buy a ticket (was planning on staying in the car)! I was given a private tour of the library as well which made my day :D
Feels extremely homely - less like a common museum, where exhibits are behind a walled garden, and more like a chill gaming cafe stuck in the past. Pretty much everything can be played with freely. Cannot recommend it enough and they deserve every donation they get
F. M.
This place is absolutely amazing, such a delightful hands on experience brought me back years! Couldn't recommend it enough, no matter the age this place will bring a smile to your face, so much to look at, play with and be marveled by. Staff is amazing, be sure to stop and chat with them. They have the best stories!

Great place to relive your childhood computer games. Kid friendly, free parking and relaxed atmosphere.

Visited the retro computer museum today as a late birthday treat for my 12yr old. As 2 adults remembering most of the items on display and what was available to play on we had a fab time and my son and his 15yr old sister loved the place too. They love the retro stuff. Some much to look at and thousands of game titles available to play !! The staff were friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. Loved the place and will definitely be going back.
G. T.
A lovely flashback to my youth. An absolute mecca of vintage and functional computer history from old Amstrad CPCs to modern arcade machines. A crazy huge library of old manuals, games, software and memorabilia including some really rare gems. Well worth a visit, if not just to enjoy the sound of a CRT whine again.
V. S. (.
Staff are really friendly and helpful. They have most of the games you'd be looking for and if they don't they'll help you find something in the same franchise or atleast something similar. The only criticism I'd have is that they close at 3PM when I'd want to be there alot longer.
D. L.
Cannot fault this place - a true computer game treasure cove! All the guys there were friendly, welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. Was so impressed with the range of computing history there too, from the NES right the way through to current consoles, along with ones like the Spectrum, Atari and Amiga. Had some very rare items, old copies of Edge Magazine and coding books. I consider myself a gamer and knowledgeable on the subject, but felt like I barely scratched the surface after visiting here. Would really recommend all gamers pay it a visit. And talk to the staff - they had lots of insight and were very welcoming.
P. H.
We really enjoyed our visit to the Retro Computer Museum. Not only is the place full of distant memories of childhood computers, but you get to play on them too! All the staff were so very helpful and happy to take time with us and our kids. We all had a fantastic time here and highly recommend paying it a visit.
A. D.
Nostalga that you can play with. It's all original retro games consoles and computers in working order that you can load up their library of original games and homebrew on to enjoy. It has over 30 working machine to use at any one time from Spectrums, Amstrads, Commodore 64s to Nintendo Game Cubes, Play Station 1 and original X-Box. The staff and volunteers are a great source of knowledge and so helpful. The on site sweet shop and disabled accessable toilet are basic but do the job. Car parking is right outside the door. We've been back multiple times now and will again, they have thousands of games in the library to chose from and not enough time to play them all.
S. D.
Staff are really friendly and helpful, venue has had a bit of an upgrade since I last went. I love everything these guys do there to keep everything going and donating my old tech to help out is a privilege.
M. W.
A great resource for retro gaming. It would be nice if there were clearer instructions on how to use the equipment - e.g. I had to Google how to soft reset the Amiga, as I'd forgotten how 😁
Y. M.
This is special place. And I hope it stays and expands in Leicester for a long time. It's an amazing place of video gaming history, that I'm hoping to visit more often.
Y. A.
Great local place to visit. Kids love it here too. Friendly welcoming staff. Will definitely be visiting more often. Consoles take you back to enjoy some good childhood memories
M. A.
Wonderful place run by wonderful people. Well worth going if you're a retro gaming fan! And even if you're not, there's plenty of arcade machines with retro and modern games on.
N. B.
Very friendly and nice stuff. Perfect for enjoying the hole day in playing games and for remembering the old ages. We will come again! Really very worthy!

Went to hand in my device for repair. Small but interesting place.

Absolutely amazing place... never seen so many retro games in one place!! Great for reminiscing and showing the young ones how it all began. Hands-on gaming on endless array of games. If don't see the one you want - ask the very helpful staff who will find it on one on the many genuine retro consoles. E.g. Space Invaders, Asteroids, Lemmings, Pac-man, tv-tennis, etc etc. Great chill out area if want to get away from screens and read one of the many old manuals and magazines. So many displays of yesteryear technologies too. A real hidden gem that I can't recommend enough for a completely different day out that the whole family will enjoy! Covid secure when we went too.
Z. Ú.
Fantastic place with friendly staff! Absolutely recomended! :)
C. C.
Brilliant place, lots to see and very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I'll be back!
Z. H. (.
Great Experience! I was lucky enough to have this whole place reserved for my birthday. It was a great evening and the guys there are so knowledgeable and great to talk to. We played alot of nostalgic games and learnt ALOT. Would definitely recommend this to gamers and lucky to have this in our city. Thanks again 👍🏾🙏🏽
A. P.
What an amazing place!!! Definitely go, the guys that run this place are great, helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.

Had a good day out. Lots of machines with a wide range of classic games suitable for all ages and skill levels. Friendly helpful staff.

Great place for those interested in old computers games
A. O.
Brilliant place took 12 year old daughter she loved seeing all the games 39 year old dad got bought up on. Hidden gem in Leicester. Amazing value for money. Staff are brilliant here especially with kids.
S. B.
If you're at all interested in computers or consoles, including VR, then get here. The staff are knowledgeable and passionate whilst being very welcoming and friendly. Snacks and drinks are available and I went on a Sunday thinking it would be quiet but there was a nice number of people to create a buzz but plenty of free machines. We'll worth a look.
s. N.
fantastic place , my eldest and youngest could have spent all day here ,
amazing staff who are so knowledgeable on
retro games !
R. F.
A completely wonderful treasure-trove place, fascinating for anyone who has been interested in computer or console gaming over the last 40 years. The place offers hands-on playing plus a massive archive of games, magazines and programs. And there is a relaxed, family vibe about the place which makes the visit completely enjoyable.
K. M.
Great place to visit. Loads to see... and do.
Really helpful and friendly team.
J. “. J. J.
From the outside it looks terrible a small unit next to a huge building. But on the inside, oh boy, on the inside it's like a TARDIS of vintage gaming consoles, arcade machines and fun! The people who run it are so nice and helpful and it's clear that there heart is really in what they do there.
Overall
-really fun
-needs to be more of it
-10/10 would go again
M. M.
Glad to see it back open again. Still has limited numbers of visitors per day due to the pandemic, but it's still an excellent trip down memory lane.
P. D.
Great place to spend some time in retro atmosphere. Wide range of all sorts of retro machines, strongly recommend to any fan of old computer systems and arcade machines. Museum will expand in future to provide even more quality entertainment for gamers of all generations. Small store inside providing all required drinks in perfect prices ;)
C. G.
Fantastic place! They have just about every retro gaming console you can think of. They also have retro VR systems and retro arcade machines! Great place for parties too and the staff are very friendly! One of Leicester's hidden gems
J. B.
Cannot recommend highly enough! We were here for nearly 5 hours. I loved it and my 9 year old still had to be peeled away! Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. Looking forward to a return visit.
A. S.
Really enjoyed this museum. They have lots of retro computer gaming machines, including a C64, which was my childhood computer so very nostalgic! All the volunteers are very helpful and chatty, and will set you up to have a play on any of their machines. Would highly recommend if you enjoy retro gaming
J. S.
This is a little slice of bonkers. Fun way to spend a couple of hours. Full of nostalgia.
T. M.
If you have any interest in personal computers, consoles or the development of video games over the last 50 years, you should go here. It's not glitzy glass case museumy. It's loads of the good stuff, collected and curated by people who are obviously passionate about it. Took my family for a birthday treat and spent the entire day, with small boys engrossed in every game their father's ever played, a wife who now wants Lemmings at home and a very happy dad. Can't recommend highly enough.
D. T.
This is an amazing place, run by a great group of people. They have everything from a Commodore PET to a PlayStation 2 set up for you to play, plus their own arcade room boasting full size cabinets and even some fully working old-school virtual reality hardware.
The back room has racks and racks of games, practically every title for every system you can remember for your youth. If you owned a computer or console in the 1980s or 90s (who didn't?), then couple of hours here will lead you on a massive nostalgia binge. Stay a while, stay forever (or at least until they close)...
S. j. (.
Awesome. Staff really friendly and knowledgeable. Kids loved it. Adults loved it. Could play on so many consoles. Would encourage everyone to go and donate any old consoles or games. They are a charity, preserving history.
J. H.
Brilliant afternoon with my eight and eleven year olds. Amazing array of games to play with informative and helpful volunteers on hand. This place is a real gem. Highly recommend.
c. r.
Heaven for lovers of the old computers and the games that sailed in them! Many systems out for the use of visitors. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
L. H.
Very friendly staff and alot of retro stuff to play on and look at.
J. B.
These guys are brilliant. They put loads of effort and a ton of enthusiasm into running retro games and LAN setups. We went with cubs, watching my son play UT was awesome...
D. D. F.
A fun place run by keen enthusiasts focused on retro games. It would be nice to see a bit more focus on retro non-game computing, perhaps a display, a timeline and some retro computers running word processors and the like. A few museum-style exhibits with info text would do well to complement the existing game-focused hands-on part.
S. S. V.
Great experience and very friendly staff who made us feel very welcome! I look forward to coming back soon. Thank you all 😊
D. P.
My boys loved it and the staff are super! They understood my eldest boys needs immediately without me saying anything and made him feel so comfortable :) we will go back again
G. S.
Great place to visit. Brings back memories of childhood gaming! That said, kids love it too.
Parking right outside, sandwiches and coffee are available and cheap enough.
M. R. M.
Went here on a school trip
Pros:
amazing to learn about the history of computer games and consoles they were rather compelling with their rather extensive range of old products.
They really know their stuff and they're kind and passionate about what they do.
Cons:
Kind of hard to find.
S. T.
What's not to love? The guys here know their stuff about every single item in their collection. Where else can you still use 90's era VR? Where else can you see firsthand the Nintendo virtual boy? From the consoles you loved as a kid to the arcade classics you always wished were on free play, this place is an absolute must for any gamer who can make it here. Opening times are a little all over the place, but really worth the extra effort.
P. B.
All the classic home computers from the 70's, 80's & 90's. Atari, Sinclair, Amiga, BBC... A real trip down memory lane - and they have loads of gear set up for playing games on! It is a little ramshackle but you know this is a museum run by true enthusiasts - a great afternoon.
J. B.
A fantastic collections of games, computers, consoles, magazines and books. Not only can you play nearly any game under the sun for these retro systems, but the staff are the most friendliest guys you could possibly meet. I don't think i've ever had so much fun than i did when my family squared off against another family on big screen bomber man!
P. c.
Great fun for 80's/90's gaming nostalgia, friendly staff that are computer games enthusiasts.
s. b.
A good find, but it was very busy when we were here, and some people looked like they were there for the day, so getting on some machines wasnt possible in the short time we were there. I think if you have the time to spend here, you'd get good value for money, and theres tea/coffee facilities etc.
D. C.
Great place to visit for anyone who is interested in computers or videogames. Pretty much every computer and console made in the 70s 80s 90s are all here set up to play and much more besides.
The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and always happy to help.
N. G.
Great place to relive your youth and play hundreds of games across dozens of old systems. Friendly helpful staff ensure a good time is had by all.
G. C.
This place is packed with systems, peripherals, add-ons, software manuals & even magazines covering dozens of 'home' or 'micro' computers and consoles, from early machines like the Commodore PET and Sinclair ZX80, Acorn (including the famous BBC Micro), Amstrad, Atari, Amiga and consoles from Sega, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft (X-Box). If you used a computer or console at home or school in the 80s or 90s - they have at least one of them here. Chances are, you will be able to play dozens of games you remember, and hundreds that you don't! Whilst RCM is definitely geared more towards 'home gaming / computing', If you prefer, they have an 'arcade room' too, with several 'MAME' machines (where you choose from an on-screen menu of several arcade games), plus a couple of 'driving' type machines. Add to this an enthusiastic, highly knowledgeable and welcoming team (who also run the small gift shop, which sell a small selection of soft drinks too), and you have a superb place to enjoy a visit. I really can't recommend this place enough - I have made two visits so far, with a third planned to attend one of the regular 'special events', which feature a theme or focus on a particular aspect of the retro scene, and usually involve 'extras' such as food and live entertainment. The only draw-back is that the area isn't well served by public transport, especially on Sundays. This is, obviously, not the fault of RCM, but is something to consider when planning a visit.
R. B.
A great day out, fantastic place and people. Go and play your old games from childhood on the computers or consoles you owned or dreamed of owning. Probably the best Retro Computer Museum in the world, certainly the best in the UK.
