Reviews of The Newarke Houses Museum
P. R.
We've visited here quite a few times. This is a lovely historical place, and it has a lovely garden to just sit down and relax as well. Worth a visit in spring or summer!
Good to visit with children, they offer activity sheets at the entrance so to engage with the museum's information. Not just for children, teenagers and adults too.
They have a whole street ww2 representation with interactive shops, where you can enter and listen to the conversations during the war.
There is a little tunnel trench where you can check where soldiers would stay and hear the sounds of artillery. It's not very loud so children should be fine to go through.
They also have public toilets, tho very easy to miss them be sure to ask if unsure where they are located.
The gift shop is very limited but it has the same as other museums in Leicester.
You can easy spend an hour, hour and a half in there to see everything and take in all the information. Very educational.

Well worth a visit. free entry. Leicester history as well as military.

I visited this museum as I kept walking past it most days and always wondered what it was like inside. Turns out that it is a wonderful little place that explains a lot about the culture and industry of the city. Upstairs is dedicated to the regiment of Leicestershire and explains a lot about them. I also saw the temporary display about the Blitz of Leicester, which was my second favourite part of the museum.
The garden is worth visiting as it is so relaxing to sit outside with all of the nature. As someone who enjoys photographing plants and animals, I made sure to take a look.
Overall, this museum is a fun few hours for either the locals or visiters to the city.
G. B. D.
Absolutely brilliant, and free! Medium size museum. Lots to take in, lots of great exhibits and real life displays, for free. Definitely a must do visiting Leicester. Staff are amazing too, very knowledgeable, friendly and approachable. Did I mention it was free!
A. T.
We visited to view the Snowman and the Snowdog exhibition. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The other elements of the museum were enjoyed briefly while we found our way between the desired exhibition and the toilets. As time didn't allow us to take these in we vowed to return as it looked to be a great place to understand how people used to live and the things they would see.
The museum is free to enter and easy to park on the street outside for a reasonable cost.
A. G.
Love this museum as it covers the history of life in Leicester in recent centuries including during WW1 and WW2. It is housed in a number of houses with a shared garden. Lovely seeing the original interior of these houses including impressive woodwork, stained glass, stairs and fireplaces. Highly rexommended. It’s free and open weekends.
N. J.
A great free museum. A little walk from the main city centre but well worth it. A great collection of exhibits including the story of the royal Leicestershire regiment. Really enjoyed the WW1 trench and the old Street with shops.
Something for everyone.
A. S.
Always enjoy taking our girls (aged 8 & 11) here to the many activities organised throughout the year. They love exploring the various rooms with the displays, dressing up in the uniforms, and playing with the toys in the toys and games room.
K. B.
If you visit a new city you want to learn its history. While this is not the main museum of Leicester, you get a glimpse of Leicester past, including cobbled street and tradional pub. I won't mention the exhibitions as that's on the website. Friendly staff will open boxes of extra artefacts to show you if there is too little space to display them. Leicester is positively impacted by a large community who immigrated in 1972 and its exhibition is unique in the UK.
D. M.
Stumbled a cross this museum accidently whilst visiting Leicester and I just can't believe it's free! It's a fantastic museum with so much to see and the gardens are beautiful. Will definitely be visiting again.
S. D.
It was fun .... loved the Minnie air raid tunel
J. &. L. L.
Love, love, love a museum, and this is a gem, been loads of times as a child and now almost into my 50's still brilliant, went this time to see the Raymond Briggs exhibition and I was blown away, free admission but honestly put money in the donation box please as this is an awesome place to go young and old.
G. L.
Great exhibition on the blits in Leicester. I feel like the outfits in the case should have had there labels stuck to the glass case in front of the outfits, to make it easier to read.
a. g.
A little gem in leicester Town centre. Well worth a visit. Based on the lovely grounds of the de Mountford uni campus Leicester cathedral, the last resting place of King Richard the third is onlh a stones throw away too, 👍
P. S.
Took the grandkids during Easter hols, really enjoyed the experience and it's free, we infact did 3 museum's in one day
M. J.
Really informative. Great walk back in time. Sad to see how much Leicester has declined through the years.
J. M.
Went to Newarke Houses museum for a talk about a famous son Daniel Lambert and also had time to visit the displays. I really enjoyed the realistic trenches from ww1
M. W.
Went there when I was younger on a school trip and found it fascinating with the local history . Its very quite around the area with a lot of seating areas !
R. H.
We spent an enjoyable hour here looking round. The museum is well worth a visit.
E. F.
All round great museum. Lots of lovely permanent displays to interest all ages. Current exhibition of 'The Snowman' animation original illustrations is superb. Well presented and great activity booklet and areas for young children.
H. B.
An interesting walk back through history. Friendly and welcoming staff. Dressing up clothes and old fashioned toys to play with and a trail to keep children happy.
K.
Kids enjoyed it , staff are lovely would definitely recommend.
D. S.
Intriguing museum which is bigger than it looks. Best to visit in the morning. Be aware it shuts at 4:00 pm.
D. B.
Really good place to take the grandkids, they loved it, you just doate whatever you can afford into a dome at the entrance, or nothing if you cant fford to, very helpful staff, will go again 😁
A. S.
Easily one of my favourite museums in Leicester. Especially love the trenches bit. Was really impressed by the imperial typewriter exhibition as this is something I had zero knowledge on.was very eye opening.
A. T.
Great museum. Lots of information about Leicester during time.
V. A.
I've been here before and enjoyed it in the past. Today I came here as a group with quite a few children and my friends. Anyways the young children were quite excited to see many stuff around the museum. My overall view of the museum wasn't great today... staff that are unsure how to crack a smile. I felt quite unwelcome by the staff from the very beginning of entry. This place had a lack of a child-friendly feeling compared to New Walk.
Anyways I respect children were quite loud at some stages and there were many other kids running about too that I didn't even know. I found it quite rude when the museum lady shouted up the stairs to me like 'can you guys keep the noise down, other visitors are complaining' and other museum lady saying 'There's a monster in here be quiet' ... like OK.
I'm sorry but we are visitors ourselves and although sometimes kids can be quite noisy, what do you expect in public places also? At the end of the day we could just keep the children on Ipads at home but thought we take them out. Also visitors keeps them in a job. One lady in the old toy room didn't look like she wanted to be there and I felt a negative vibe in there when I was looking.
The gardens that lead to the other gardens were great and we explored that and also went on a walk near Castle Motto, near St. Mary's and other surrounding areas.the building is an interesting history. It is an interesting area in that part of Leicester.
J. B.
Always like local history so would have liked more about what it was like in Leicester during industrial times and what the economy depends upon now. Good room about Uganda immigration but surely there's a lot more about immigration and how it's moulded the city
O. (.
Very educational, staff are super friendly! And just an overall great experience!
J. G.
What an interesting place. Lots of different sections from the war years, household things, recreation of an old street and shops with a pub. Fascinating
j. s.
Love this museum. Went to see the 'Twenties to Trenches' exhibition. Really informative and lots of reference to local Leicester people and WW1.
K. B.
Excellent hiden museum in the heart of Leicester. Lovely exhibits, helpful staff and accessible.
V. R.
Been living in Leicester 50 years didn't even know this museum existed very poorly signed need to look into this as am sure lots of other people get lost as we did otherwise very educating
Only came to see snowman with my grandson other eise we wouldn't have come at all thanks to our grandson 👍
D. B.
Still a lovely place but not so much to see this time or so interactive...so much about war or military matters. Missed the cobblers shop ... the staff were friendly
S. Q.
Been multiple times and I have seen and learnt so much it full of surprises would defo recommend a visit to the museum ITS FREEE
A.
What a splendid museum! I enjoyed the diversity of information😅 the atmosphere is brilliant& everything was interesting! I felt a bit sad tho reading the letters of one of the soldiers! Imagining what they went through is heartbreaking!
S. T.
A great way to spend a rainy Saturday. Staff were super helpful and even helped my 8 year old daughter find the missing painting on her picture trail. They couldn't have been kinder to her, one lady showed her the interactive lullabies. Even though this museaum is compact there is lots to see, probably more so than New Walk, which has a bigger space. I think youd need at least 2 and half hours to really absorb everything. Thank you
T. L. F.
Fascinating museum exploring how life has changed in the city, and the role of Leicester men in the world wars. There are interactive exhibits plus some toys and games to keep kids entertained. A great resource for the city.
J.
Very interesting museum with hidden gem of gardens, yet only 10 minutes walk from bustling city centre.
Congratulations to staff and museum for making premises as disabled friendly as possible, very difficult in an old building. Helpful staff.
I. F.
Fantastic experience varied and interesting.
My kids loved it there
Simply outstanding and free.
S. B.
Just on the edge of the city centre this could probably be considered a bit off the beaten track - my trip today with my youngest daughter was probably the first time I've been there in at least thirty years.
While there's plenty of interest here, including an exhibit on the Leicestershire regiments that I think used to be housed in the New Walk Museum, I wouldn't say it's the best place to take very young children - while my two year old loved playing with the till and play food in the corner of the haberdashery exhibit and a quick walk round the garden, it was hard to interest her in most of the other distribution displays, and she really didn't like going through the World War 1 trench exhibit due to the darkness and noise.
However, if I could ditch the kids for the best part of a day (since the museum doesn't open until 10am), I'd be more than happy to come back by myself or with another adult to look around.
In terms of accessibility, I got on just about ok going round with a pushchair, and there is a lift between floors.
L. C.
This place is fantastic! Not like your usual museums. Very interesting and fun. The kids loved it particularly the little street, mini cinema and war bunker. The staff are lovely too
H. J.
Love the gardens at The Newarke Houses Museum. They are so peaceful and quiet.
G. S.
Great visit back to see blitz exhibition . Not been since 1970s
M.
Nice to visit after 50 years , I still remember the paved streets
P. S.
Old Leicester history, beautiful house and welcoming staff. Good to re visit and see new exhibits.
M. J.
Lovely museum have different exhibitions on went to the embroidery show
J. M.
This is a tardis of a museam. The staff were so helpful and there was so much to see. Lifts to 2nd floor and the trenches section was really well done. Definitely, well worth a visit. Lovely garden at back.
A. M.
A cool, informative, free tour! We were satisfied, thanks a lot to the staff.
J. S.
Free admission. Looks small until you enter. First time I went in, found everything so interested that didn't realise where 2 hours have disappeared. Good displays, good story, ability to interact with it all.
n. l.
peaceful and relaxing place kids always seem to enjoy it
M. N.
Museum is very nice and you can also visit with your family and friends and I also enjoyed and learn to many things in that museum like how villagers srvive in that time how they live. i really really loved it.
L. C.
First time here, i enjoyed it immensely, would recommend it to all and it's free entry (bonus). The gift shop could have more stock in.
K. H.
A lovely place to visit with the family for a peak in to how people used to live in the past.
C. R.
Visited the blitz exhibition. Very interesting and well presented.
V. J.
Beautiful little museum that I've visited a number of times over many years since being a child.
H. K. M.
I don't live anywhere near the museums. Made my way only to find out it is closed! Not did the site or Google advise it was closed today. Very upset and disappointed.
R. L.
Haven't been for a few years. Really impressed with the new layout went in the week and it was very quiet.
R. B.
Really well staffed. Attendant instructions reassuring. Museum of interest for war history and informative for cities cultural and industrial history. I would comment it is probably more interesting as a learning resource for schools and for local residents but still a nice drop in for visiting tourists.
C. M.
Great place,and lovely exhibitions.
A. R.
Love the museum. Its a special place and should be treasured by the local council and people of Leicester.
M. N.
Fabulous! Went with baby in pushchair and was able to navigate the house and gardens. The staff on the front desk were very knowledgeable and helpful, and all with the added bonus of free entry. The house exhibits are very well presented with the Victorian Street being the highlight for me. I heartily recommend a visit here and it's only a short walk to the town centre.
B. N.
Very interesting and informative. Play, dressing up area for children. A great historical view of Leicester over the last few hundred years. When in Leicester I always pay a visit with my grandchildren.
R. F.
There’s a wonderful, confusing collection of things. It’s an interesting place but expect to be confused as well as intrigued. It’s like they’ve put in the building all the stuff that wouldn’t fit in another museum. Quirky but nice.
J. R.
Great place to visit for all the family. Could spend hrs looking around, there's a coffee shop and even a craft club for the little ones.
H. B.
First time I'd been here though have walked past many times. A real hidden gem with so much to see, do and learn about Leicester's history. Free admission makes this a great place to stop by if you're in the area!
K.
Definitely worth a visit. Very well maintained museum and an eye opener. It was interesting to know about the small history of Leicester and the imperial writer exhibition.
e. r.
Love the museum. So much to see. Staff helpful and friendly.
J. C.
Amazing museum, visited many times, always something new to discover. Informative for all ages, well kept surroundings in a city with a lot of history.
S. W.
Free museum with a varied history of Leicester through the war with some personal accounts from local people affected or who were decorated with medals for their actions. One area was just like the trenches and you can imagine how soul destroying and scary it must have been. The effects rationing had on foot and clothes, for example, gave an insight into the day to day struggles everyone suffered. Children could carry out activities, play dress up games and enjoy the garden that had many areas to hide.
I was a little disappointed that there wasn't any background history about the house, rooms and family life etc
There's a great mock-up of a street with shops displaying goods, a draper, pub etc.
and I could recognise some goods from yesteryears.
Worth a visit
D. M.
It was a lovely afternoon looking round and remembering what life was like years ago, a lovely place to visit.
K. R.
Very interesting free to visit
S. S.
Just has that old time feel, some unusual exhibits as well as local and cultural history.
M. M.
Great Museum!
I came across this museum by chance, its free, it's charming and I would go back again!
One member of staff, Gilby, made the visit extra special, he answered my questions, checked I had seen everything and told me stories.
Gilby gave me lots of ideas on what else to see and he gave me directions on how to get to the next place which were spot on.
S. K.
A really great, free museum. If you go in small groups, you might get better service. However, taking groups of students over wasn't appreciated because they were enjoying the exhibits too loudly. The exhibits are great though.
D. W.
A great local museum that captures lots of local history, with plenty to see and during school holidays has activities for kids.
D. U.
This museum is located within De Montfort University campus and free entry, you can't miss this place if you are student and curious about history and willing to know some facts during world war and Technology used those time,, uniform, shord, some antique wooden piece of furniture, antiquity,,
Also need to mention the small garden from inside and flowers, greenery will refresh your mind and offcourse will capture good memories to cherish!! 😊👌❤
R. P.
A lovely little museum with a particularly beautiful garden and lots of local history.

B. P. L.
I absolutely love Newarke Houses and can visit happily, spending many an hour within the exhibitions and gardens. I honestly think it's the best museum in Leicester, a real gem.
C. W.
Nice to see a piece of Leicester history however I would have liked it to be a more in depth. Maybe i need to visit a few more museums! That i am looking forward to!
L. P.
A classic place to visit, just to see the Daniel Lambert stuff alone.
A sad reminder of what Leicester used to be, a centre of the hosiery industry, alas, lost to the ages.
Mixed feelings, looking at Leicester now which just seems to be a centre for Student Flats and Soulsby based corruption.
Please, do visit this place.
L. R.
Excellent service the guy on the front desk was very knowledgeable,so helpful and genuine, we came from Derbyshire to visit the museum, would defiantly visit again .
S. T.
We enjoyed looking around this museum lady at the door was very friendly and informative

Great museum. I have been visiting for over 60 years. Very professional and helpful staff - particularly the gentleman on reception.
C. D.
Really loved it here and so did my 7 year old grandson
K. R.
Always enjoyable but as always the place is a bit of a maze and you can easily miss parts of the museum if you don't check which bits you've visited
S. S.
An amazing, packed solid museum for Leicester. Well worth a visit, or two!
J.
Love this place and the garden out back. Quite a lot of war memorabilia. Enjoyed the memory lane games and street setting. Shame they cant change the shop window items a bit as its remained much the same for 20 years. If youre new to the area youll enjoy this place.
J. J.
Been going since I was a little boy, amazing museum especially for the history lover. Highly recommend - a staple in Leicester.
E. K.

Great little museum with lovely gardens at the back. We've been on many summer days a great find. Although it gets confused on Google with the magazine which is the landmark next to Vaughan way.

My children love this museum! We get to dress up in clothes from different eras, even as a soldier. They have a play area, with vintage toys in glass cases. Upstairs has a walk through in the style of an old war scene with sound effects. The gardens are beautiful, great for snack break for the family. Friendly staff. All in all, a good place to visit!
H. G.

J. S.
Great little museum does lots of events and has a great history on Leicester.
P. C.
A hidden gem in Leicester. The building has been kept in great condition and is bigger inside than expected from the outside. The 'trenches to the twenties' exhibition is a must for anyone interested in military history and the trenches section is brilliantly done. Thoroughly recommend this to anyone wishing to learn more or just to do something different.
R. G.
Not among my best museum experiences. Too many things in arranged badly in too small a space. But true, it is informative.
L. A.
An amazing range of collections and displays - and a wall at the back with cannon holes in it! Mini-cinema shows local films. My favourite part is the little street of shops.
M. T.
A beautiful museum set in one of Leicester's oldest houses giving a delicious history of the city's diversity and roots. Fun to explore and a recent edition of a lift making it more accessible to wheelchair users.

What a hidden treasure! I recently went with my teenage son and was really surprised how much there is to see here. The old street of shops complete with pub were very authentic. We had a sit in the old cinema and watched a film on Leicester celebrating through the ages. Lots for those interested in War history and even a walk through the trench with sounds! Well worth a visit with the kids lots to see and do and a very unique building itself. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We always visited Leicester museums as kids with my grandfather so it was a trip down memory lane to see the old haberdashery shoo that used to be at wygston house

(Translated) The museum gave us a good insight into the more recent history of Leicester, using many vivid objects, videos and recreated scenes. Above all, the trench from the Second World War is shown impressively. The garden behind the building is wonderful.
