Reviews of Van Gogh - The Immersive Experience
C. G.
Set in a beautiful, historical church.
I stayed in the immersion room to see it over again. Truly a relaxing, therapeutic experience. There were deck chairs, benches and floor rugs and cushions to sit on.
I love Van Gogh so it was amazing to pick up a few facts I didn't know while I was there.
This was my 1st experience of VR....and WOW!!! It was truly amazing! I was a bit freaked out at 1st 😂 but wish I had done it twice now. Highly recommend!!
Gift shop was quite expensive but had some beautiful items.
C. W.
It's a must see. Brilliant. If you love art, go! Don't miss the virtual reality part either. It's an extra £3.00 charge for 11 minutes, but if you want to experience and "see where" Van Gogh lived and painted, do it! I went on a Friday afternoon and it was a good time to go. One thing: choose you're time wisely. There can be young children about running up and down with loud voices and can be very distracting. Choose a family time or a time when children might not be around. There is a small, but wonderful gift shop at the end. The staff are very helpful and go out of their way to help you.
S. W.
It’s a great way to spend an hour and detox from shopping. It’s hard not to be impressed by the immersive projections within the dramatic space that the church provides. I found though that the animations detracted somewhat from the art work. I found the pictures few by without the time to appreciate them. I guess the installation os designed for the social media generation and so doesn’t dwell for more than about ten seconds on anything. Still really enjoyed the experience though.
G. M.
My wife and I had a lovely visit, looking into the mind of the artist Vincent van Gogh, as displayed by this exhibition. The VR trip transports you back in time, while the Immersive Experience was like walking through one of his paintings. Totally recommended, so very worth visiting.
K. U.
Fantastic! If you like Van Gogh, go! If you enjoy art, go! If you're an arty crafty person, go! And if you enjoy VR there's a bit of that too (the virtual reality was my favourite part!)
s. e.
I don't a know a lot about Van Gogh and I loved it! The exhibition is set in a beautiful church building and the displays are gorgeous. An overall really immersive experience. I highly recommend the VR too.
M. H.
What a great experience. Not a huge culture vulture so not my natural environment but grabbed my whole family's attention and even my 10 year old was entralled. And soo relaxing. Great!
S. Q.
This was such a beautiful and peaceful experience and I’d would go again it was so calm and peaceful and it was a very delightful time. 100% do the vr experience as if not you are wasting your time it’s so cool and fun thing to do. Would do it in a weekday as it wasn’t busy and it was quite
J. W.
I enjoyed the experience very much, even though I am not a great Van Gogh fan. The exhibit is in a church just outside Leicester city centre. You get in through a corridor which has a timeline for the artist and a few of his paintings. Around the corner is a large vase into which is projected a lot of his paintings. These segue through sunflowers, irises, chrysanthemums etc. It is quite hypnotic. The only issue I had is that you can hear someone talking about Starry Night the whole time and it is distracting! From there we went to listen to the recording about Starry Night and then thee is a mock up of Van Gogh's room in Arle I think. After that we went into the Immersive experience. There are deck chairs, benches and rugs in the floor with cushions, take your choice. Paintings are projected on to the walls and floor and this is accompanied by music. This lasts about 30 minutes and is completely mesmerising. The people in the paintings move, water pours out of some of them, fabulous. After this you can do some drawing or colouring of Van Gogh paintings and then there's the optional V R experience which is an extra £3. I recommend it. It allows a 360 degree view of farm land, villages and the coast/ river. Every now and then you come upon a frame which is then filled in by one of his paintings. I was very impressed. For £16 including the VR I thought it was good value for money as we were there for just over an hour. There is the usual gift shop on the way out too, if you want a souvenir.
L. X.
Came with friends, it was cute little exhibit, interesting concept but the immersive experience was quite slow moving for me and made me giddy. It's not bad an experience and a good way to get people to know more about Van Gogh out of an art gallery. Perhaps with that price I would prefer seeing the actual Van Gogh art exhibition instead.
E. S.
Wonderful exhibition, got me inspired to start painting again. VR experience was fantastic, I walked through the streets of Arles myself! Highly recommend.
C. C.
Really enjoyed the immersive experience yesterday. It was lovely and quiet so you could get into various places and take great photos. The immersive experience invoked a really calm and slightly emotional feeling. The digital graphics are amazing. We paid extra for the virtual reality which was fantastic and well worth it
K. “. K.
Brilliant hour and half. Very imaginative and a few surprises which are worth an extra £3.. even my partner enjoyed it and he is hard to please..
J. W.
Absolutely amazing. Be aware, the immersive experience is so relaxing you might just doze off! It certainly isn't through boredom though. Be sure to pay for the additional Virtual Reality experience at the end. It's worth every penny. We would thoroughly recommend this to anyone
E. H.
Really enjoyed our time here. Would absolutely recommend the VR experience you can pay an extra £3 for at the end. The whole exhibition was interesting but the VR really made the trip for us, even though I have found VR a bit uncomfortable to use before. The main projection room was also really cool.
E. M.
A must visit! Thoroughly enjoyed it! Highly recommend it!
P. F.
I can not believe this experience wasn't busier. Best £13 I have ever spent on an experience. It was absolutely Amazing. The work that went into put this together. Can not recommend it enough. Brilliant. It's a must for any are lovers or even Bob art lovers.
S. O.
A brilliant experience. Do the VR thing too!
P. K.
VR experience was totally AMAZING. Best exhibition Leicester have ever put on.
w. h.
I have just got back from this exhibition, with 3 friends. Wow wow wow. Blew us all away. What a great way to get to know, Van Gogh, the artist. His life, his works and his state of mind. Truly amazing experience. A must see for all ages.
Can the next exhibition be Monet please?
L. G.
Excellent, loved it. Recommended paying the small fee at the end for the VR.
P. P.
An absolutely brilliant experience, well worth the cost and the £3 for the virtual reality was also worth doing. Never felt rushed and the staff were friendly and helpful. A must if you've not been. Going back to visit the church another time as that too looks interesting.
A. B.
Really enjoyed my visit and would recommend you try to VR bit at the end too. I left with a reignited spark of creativity in myself. I went home to watch Loving Vincent, which was the perfect accompaniment to this exhibition.
L. L.
Highly recommend this exhibition at all saints church on Highcross Street. Only 13 quid, and I found it really relaxing sitting back on the deck chairs and watching the show brought to life. Blankets on the chairs and even little heaters were a lovely touch x
R. O. Z.
Unique exhibition for a unique artist. Have a look if you around. Do the VR, worth it...
S. T.
Fantastic - highly recommended. The VR experience is extra but really interesting xxx
J. S.
I really enjoyed this experience. I thought it was well done and interesting. My teenager wasn't quite so enamoured with it but said it was "alright". A little bit pricey for what it was but a nice way to spend an hour.
B. F.
Interesting experience but a lot if "fluff" bulking out the time in immersive room. Time and information could have been used far more effectively with bit more thought. Worth a visit - the oculus virtual headsets worth £3 at end but not for those who get motion sickness probably.
B. H.
Small exhibition in a church space. Bought tickets in advance. Parked in the Highfields John Lewis multi storey which is just behind the church and a 5min walk away. I enjoyed the main immersive space although it wasn't that comfortable to sit in for an extended period. I found the vase installation changing too quickly for me to enjoy all the different still life but I loved the concept. The intro and the 3D version of The Bedroom I thought was fab. It was clear to me that the curators worked really hard to bring Van Gogh to life and were generally successful so worth a visit.
G. S.
Absolutely wonderful. Well worth going a second and third time. Loved every second.
R. H.
The kids had an absolute blast watching the images projected on the walls, and we enjoyed it as well. They'd set the room up to be terribly relaxing, so we all reclined on cushions on the floor and enjoyed
A. P.
Well worth it. Kids also enjoyed. Must do the VR experience at the end.
A. C.
Very informative, well worth the visit. Would recommend!
R. G.
I cannot rate this 'experience' highly enough! I'm keen to advise everyone I know to make a trip here and (obviously) all those I don't know that read this review. You won't be disappointed.
R. W.
The "show" was brilliant and quite emotional! It makes you feel his mental dilemma and quandary.
It's almost like you feel his pain and delight in his brilliance.😌
R. I.
Really enjoyed it. Would recommend it! The VR experience was great!
F. R.
Nice spot to learn some about Van Gogh and accesible price
S. S.
Great exhibition to learn more about the artist and his works. VR experience was definitely worth it.
S.
Going in I didn't know what to expect.
During my visit I felt they could have easily improved the experience, by: *Adding narration through the visual display in the main hall.
*Adding some comfortable seating in the main hall.
*Having stories about his life and photos of people he had a connection to (ie, his brother)
*Having work from artists that influenced him.
I did feel it lacked a human feel. I felt it would be more interesting to computer graphics students, than an art lover.
However, I left wanting to know more about Van Gogh and his life.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend it (even if it was free to enter) and I'm a bit confused by all the rave reviews.
Also, I didn't see them clean the VR head gear (covid wise) and not everyone wore a mask.
A. W.
Really interesting couple of hours spent learning about Van Gogh, his art and his life. The VR at the end is must! Don't skip it. Tip: take a big coat as it's a church so a bit cold, although they have done their best to keep it warm.
E. T. (. S. F. H.
It is quite small but still worth to visit. the visual and atmosphere are spot on. they put it so nicely together to bring us his arts.
J. W.
Set in a Church in Leicester, the experience was busy when we arrived at 2pm and it takes a while to move along as people are there to look at the pictures and watch the short video about his life. There is a replica of his room before you head in to the main immersive part of the display. There are a number of deckchairs and benches to sit on and there is something being displayed in each part of the walls, ceiling and even the floor. Bit hard to explain but it is a video, light and music show that is on a 30 minute loop. Very well put together and it is almost like you are in the paintings. After that there are some outline drawings which you can take with you or use there crayons to colour in or even write on the walls! You can leave after that via the small gift shop or pay an extra £3 for the VR experience which is 11 minutes long and again, is really good and worth the money.
E. W.
Superb experience, virtual tour is optional but well worth the extra £3 charge! The customer in front of me asked if she could see it again as she now knew what to expect and could enjoy it better. I didn't have time to watch it twice, but I intend to go back and visit the whole venue again.
Perfect use for an old church :) Chilly, but worth it. :) x
e. s.
Really lovely experience. Surprisingly I felt emotional during the immersion. Will be looking at Van Goghs work a lot differently now.
S. N.
I admit, I went with a low expectation after reading some reviews but was pleasantly surprised by the experience. The VR section is a must. Well worth the money.
D. S.
Very interesting and an amazingly relaxing experience
R. F.
Well worth visiting, even if you think art isn't for you.
Seeing all his paintings in detail whilst sitting on the floor or in a deck chair allows time to appreciate the art.
The VR experience at the end, an extra £3, is well worth it.
J. H.
Really enjoyed this. Made mr appreciate Van Gogh more than I had previously. A little chilly as in an old church so would advise gloves
e. l.
Superb exhibition delivered by an outstanding team. It is one sensational exhibition that I felt connected with and emotional. Thank you.
J. H.
We were there for about 1 hour. Very interesting. Just remember to wrap up warm as it can be very cold sitting for 35 minutes.
M. R.
We loved it! A fabulous insight into the artist's tumultuous life. The technology just made the art more accessible. The VR film was fantastic. Truly magical!
M. G.
A nice change, something different and a great way of getting your "Culture shot".
Be warned, it's being exhibited in a church and can get a bit cold. Glad I went.
A. U.
It's a lovingly put together work, using the building perfectly to show the best on van Gogh's work and his life.
R. M.
It was a really imaginative way of presenting Van Gogh's work. Loved the displays, especially the vases, beautifully done, and the 3D section at the end). The venue, though was bitterly cold..... more heating or blankets needed. (We did go on the coldest day of the year, thus far, but it's a church.... its cold)
S. F.
Loved it. Very tempted to go again before it finishes. Really different experience, and so nice to just sit and absorb it.
A. T.
Fantastic experience. VR option is worth the extra money. Gift shop surprisingly expensive though.
N. N.
The 10 minute virtual reality bit- totally worth it. It’s a different format compared to the expo at Birmingham, nevertheless, a good experience :)
X. Z.
Great experience, it’s a bit small but definite worth visiting
s. p.
Amazing experience, loved every minute well worth a visit!!
O. R.
Absolutely brilliant. A lovely experiencw. Pay for the VR headset.
R. P.
We throughly enjoyed the experience, you felt you were dragged back in time. Fantastic.
T.
Fabulous experience. Well worth it. Definitely to the 3D virtual experience at the end for £3. Fantastic
A. M.
Absolutely mesmerising. I had no idea of what to expect, but the location, content and imagination were perfect. I'd recommend this experience to everyone!
K. S.
Lovely relaxing looped display, seemed to be enjoyed by adults and small children alike. Really liked the VR headset experience after (extra charge for that, but worth it).
S. O.
This is a gorgeous experience for the eyes and ears. Even if you are not interested in Van Gogh just the presentation here is to be admired. Set in an ancient church , and moulding with the arches and pillars this experience is a treat. The sound and vison mixture will engulf your senses. The story of VG's life with his animated paintings bring the era to life. Young ones particularly will be enthralled. Well worth the 70 miles plus journey. Well done.
A. W.
I was so excited to see the Van Gogh Experience it quite let down once we walked inside the venue where it was held. The building was musty smelling and the only public toilet was a portaloo outside. What should have been an immersive and unique experience was quite dull, and amateurish. The optional VR experience at the end of the exhibition was the highlight.
J. M.
I really didn't know what to expect with this but I really enjoyed it. The church architecture really lent itself to the projection of the painting and the recreation of the artists room was very good. Best bit was the virtual reality.
K. Y.
Vincent Van Vogh VR experience was amazing. I like the artist even more after visiting here!
A. W.
Loved it. Learnt so much about the man. The experience was well thought out.
S. S.
Loved it, the use of technology brought the paintings and life of Van Gogh into our modern world. Very friendly and welcoming staff. The VR trip was excellent and an amazing end to our visit.
N. C.
Loved it. What a great way to experience something of the Van Gogh experience. Loved the immersive story, the paintings really came to life. And the VR experience was amazing. Can't recommend highly enough.
K. H.
This was a really great experience my friend told me about. I do appreciate art and didn’t know much about Van Gough I’ll admit. But going to this exhibition I learnt a lot and found his work to be so beautiful. £3 for the VR experience was well worth it, it was so relaxing and realistic. The immersive experience moved me to tears with its beauty. Plus there’s a nice little gift shop at the end with reasonably priced things. Would recommend for anyone. You do have to pay for entry but it’s well worth it.
A. R.
Very good exhibition, found out things I didn't know about Vincent, very beautifully done. I recommend the VR experience, caution if you're motion sick
T. S.
Interesting presentation of key images from Van Gogh's paintings and drawings. Main 'immersive experience' very soothing. Not a huge exhibition, hence some may think it expensive. There is an additional headset VR experience which is an extra cost.
C. W.
The only downside to this whole experience was not knowing where to park. Once we were inside the whole experience was magical, we were so relaxed the time just ran away with us. Definitely worth a visit ☺
A. T.
Very interesting exhibit. Amazing to see how much Van Gogh did in so few years and to see his declining health through his art.
R. P.
Really enjoyable visual treat. the VR experience was a few quid more but really good. Turns out this world was meant for someone as beautiful as him!
T. T.
Amazing, totally immense yourself in this to fully enjoy it.
O. d. M.
A really beautiful experience that gave me a far greater appreciation of the life and work of Van Goph. The VR experience was the best I have ever experienced. I really felt as if I experienced a sliver of Van Goph's life.
A. B.
This is brilliant especially for any van gogh fans, but do you know what it is just stuck a good experience anyway.. The whole room just moves its totally amazing. The virtual tour at the end is a definite highlight do not ,not pay the 3 pounds for it it is AMAZING.. 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
N. N.
We took our 3 year olds it was a super treat. Would also recommend if you want some lovely relaxation. Excellent!!!!
m.
It was an enjoyable exhibition, nice idea gets people into the city where you can visit other places as well, museums etc. Would have liked to have seen more of his work but the immersive experience was clever, where the paintings came to life quite atmospheric.
C. M.
A great morning out visiting this immersive experience. There's a small area giving you Van Gogh's history and detail on some of his works. The main hall is the immersive experience and then there's another small area for colouring in and the VR experience (which is worth the extra £3). We spent an hour and a half there but you could spend a little longer if you read and watch everything. A nice way to learn about the great artist.
L. T.
Despite not knowing much about Van Gogh originally, as well as being unable to name more than 2 of his works, I left this exhibition speechless and in complete wonder. I learnt much of his backstory and even more about his use of perspectives. I recommend watching the entire 30-minute-or-so-long immersive experience as you will regret not watching each transition. Besides, I found the music to be a perfect resort for me to relax and forget about the busy time we are living in. I enjoyed the VR experience as well. I couldn't recommend it more, even for those who know little about the man himself
A. F.
Fantastic, I knew very little about van Gogh before this, will definitely be looking at his work with new eyes
C. F.
Museum and staff onsite were brilliant. But don't buy gift vouchers. There's no way to redeem them when buying tickets online but the Leics management don't answer phones or emails. Thank goodness for the York staff who do answer phones and forwarded an email from me. The exhibition is well worth seeing though.
H. P.
Even if you are not into art,do not miss this experience of sound and light, especially with VR headsets.
R. A.
This is the second time I visit the show and it’s as mesmerizing as I remember it! Loved the bedroom at arles, the immersive experience, the vases and the documentary! The VR is an extra £3 but worth every penny.
L. W.
Very enjoyable. The whole exhibition is very cleverly done. I loved the way the works of art had been animated. The combination of pictures and music was excellent. Would definitely recommend this experience.
P. M.
Very good make sure your wrapped up well as cool in the church. Great experience
T. O.
Absolutely excellent. Definitely do the VR add on too. It was amazing. One of the most enjoyable art exhibition experiences ever.
N. P.
A gem exhibition in the heart of the city. It’s worth a visit if you haven’t already been.
A. B.
Really enjoyed this—very relaxing in the chairs in the immersive room. The £3 for the VR experience is money well spent!! Totally cool!!
J. N.
Unbelievable experience. Definitely go for the additional VR at the end - it was truly amazing.
G. H.
Fantastic experience, imaginative, a true labour of love. Looking forward to other events. The welcome was a perfect balance of care and allowing for personal freedom. This care was reflected throughout.
J. B.
Excellent. Go. You'll be sorry you missed it!
H. S.
Wasn't sure what to expect but loved this, something really relaxing about it. When we got there I was a little bit put out that there was an extra £3 to pay to do the virtual experience as the end but it's worth every penny
S. R.
What a wonderful experience and insight into the mind and works of this inspirational artist. It would be great to see more of these events featuring other artists like Monet.
L. G.
Fantastic immersive experience! Amazing to see Van Gogh's paintings not only brought to life but altered in perspective, light and colour to give a brilliant insight into the artist's life and thoughts. Perfect venue as well.Thoroughly recommend it.
L. P.
Wonderful experience. It's also worth the additional £3pp to do the VR...its astounding, beautiful, realistic etc
M. D.
Beautiful exhibition that brings amazing experiences, worth to go.
A. K.
This is a very good experience to know Van Gogh.

Great weekend trip, would recommend to art fans, it goes through the whole life experience of Can Gogh, the trip lasts for around an hour, and there is an extra VR experience for £3. Would recommend

D. R.
Absolutely breathtaking exhibition. Highly recommended.
D. A.
very good and worth every penny 😃
E. J.
Excellent presentation in a disused church. The projected paintings are amazing. Well worth the visit.
M. M.
Nice thing to do quickly but £12 a person is a bit much for the experience, it only takes 45 minutes to view everything including the 360° room.
C.
The immersive part was the best bit.
Worth going for that, didn’t do the VR.
Parking very nearby, good little gift shop
C. F.
Excellent exhibition.
Well worth a visit
P. A.
Well worth visiting and pay extra for the 3D headset.

Amazing experience. Very informative production that makes you interested in the theme, even if you were not a fan before. Don't miss out on the small extra fee to experience the VR at the end. It'll blow you away!

One of the best experiences I've had! I love Van Goch's work but I think anyone could enjoy this!

(Translated) Superb! The mix of the immersive and the more classic side exposure is very well done. The place is pretty in itself ... VR is just magic!

Superbe ! Le mélange de l'immersif et de côté l'exposition plus classique est très bien fait. Le lieu est joli en lui-même... La VR est juste magique !
