Reviews of Lincoln Castle
S. K. T.
Really enjoyed our evening at Lincoln castle. We paid to go in out of usual hours as it was quieter and we wanted something to do once the shops had closed before we went for an evening meal in the centre. The castle was great to walk around and the staff were helpful and friendly. Even out of usual hours the gift shop was still open too but the exhibitions aren't but that's why it's a bit cheaper than in the day. Will definitely be going back again soon 😎
S. K.
What a great place to come for a walk, a chill, some drinks, or with the kids. In summer the grounds have food, drinks (bar) and there's a band stand kicking out live tunes. A wonderful grassy area to sit and enjoy the food or to just relax and watch the world. You don't need to pay to every the grounds, but you will if you want to walk the perimeter wall (recommended) and visit inside the old castle and prison and of course the Magna Carter. Well worth a visit on a nice day.
V. H.
We didn't pay to go inside but nice to walk through the grounds and read some of the history. The court house is very grand. We would have loved to have done the Christmas tree light display if wed have known about it! The cafe was quite expensive and not much variety or choice. Accessible to walk through with push chairs or wheel chairs.
P. M.
we had an excellent tour of the castle.. old prisons were interesting too...the cathedral is amazing...used the park and ride.. steep street is full of great little shops x cafes.. walked along by the river side walk.
M. P.
We really loved the Cathedral and Castle Quarter. The castle grounds are great for a family picnic and they are free to enter. We paid what was rather a high price to be able to walk the castle walls and visit the jail. However, the spectacular views was probably worth the cost. There is a lift up to the castle walls but the visit is not for the feint-hearted. There are several staircases to navigate and a very narrow spiral staircase to the top of the tower. Well-placed and interesting placards explain the history and the view over Lincoln and the surrounding countryside. Within the grounds and embedded in the walls is Lucy the dragon, rumbling and growling. Every 15 minutes she roars and emits clouds of steam. Great for children and again free. The jail is very interesting and the staff/guide was very welcoming and recommended the best way to tour. On the way, we viewed Lincoln’s copy of the Magna Carta and watched a short film in the theatre. A great day out, combined with a visit to the cathedral. On the way back down ‘Steep Hill’ there are many interesting stores, and some art and some antique shops, as well as the usual tourist tat.
J.
Absolutely brill place to visit & make time to experience everything there is to do here (i am so glad we did)
Great views from the castle wall, the prison is also a must.
All staff we encountered were extremely polite & helpful
I won't tell you everything.
Go & enjoy.
R. L.
Well worth a visit. The audio tour of the castle walls were very good and is included in the entry price. We really enjoyed the prison as well. Lots for children to do, games in the prison cells.
A. H.
An excellent 3hours spent here, the prison inside the castle was really good & the circular walk around the battlement was ace, it coveted 1/3 of a mile with 20 stations explaining various events wheelchairs can easily go around as the walkway is wide with a lift to get there. Up top the view is brills, highly recommended 👌
S. D.
What a day we had learning about everything. Not been in years. We had a great day. Loved doing the Easter hunt.
Edit: Been back again for the picnic event and got to do a quest for time travellers. Lots of things to do for free and lots of great food trucks to try. Fantastic.
S. G.
Enjoyed the Christmas lights with the family, only did the cheaper version and not the illuminated wall walk. The walk takes you straight down the main pathway, lit up by sparkly Christmas trees on either side, there's a big lit up archway that fires out fake snow every couple of minutes which the kids love. The walk then takes you a short distance around the grounds, lit up with fairy lights and shining deer too.
Theres a burger van and loo's and is suitable most of the way round for a wheelchair or pushchair although there are steps at the end so you might have to turn back and go the same way again.
Big fairy light bauble for cute photos too.
Staff friendly and helpful.
J. R.
A picturesque castle that's free to enter the grounds. If you wish to go inside the gaol or have a guided tour the prices are very reasonable. The staff always have a smile for you.
M. B.
Entry to the castle and gardens is free, but for a mere £15 you get to see the Magna Carta - an 800 year old document that established many of the freedoms we enjoy to this day (even though the UK Government seem intent upon removing our human rights). Also included in the day ticket is access to the old jail (and chapel, which really is a 'must') and finally, the wall walk - which is pretty much what it says, a walk along the ramparts around the entire castle (give that a miss if you don't have a head for heights).
A superb day out.
И. С.
We spent a wonderful day. The territory of the castle is vast and allows you to spend time with pleasure, and the audio guide helps you get away from the daily hustle and bustle. Slightly disappointed gift shop, little variety. But overall a good place to stay with the family.
I. G.
Magnificent building and grounds, good if you're fit and the dragon surprised the kids with puffs of smoke and growling,it's £15 for adults which can be pricey but the views from the tower and walls is worth it plus a lift up to the walls 🤔🙄🙏
A. C.
£15 fee to see the castle and walk along the wall. Also get to see the prison and the original magna carta. Really nice views from the top of the cathedral and surrounding area.
T. R.
If your into history great place to visit. Dye to covid restrictions we couldn't go underground or into the courts but still worth a visit. It was foggy on and off when we visited which just added to the atmosphere. Unfortunately the Magna Carta was not on view but the Charters of the Forest (no photos allowed) where and these are classed as more important as King John sanctioned them where as tge Magna Carta is a revised addition by his son who took the throne at the age of 9. The prison within the walls is very spooky lol.
m.
The castle itself, built by William the Conqueror, is not much to look at but the whole complex is definitely worth a visit. It houses the victorian prisons, a few interesting towers, and the Crown Court, a beautiful grade || listed building in Gothic style with an imposing symmetrical main frontage. (The visit to the court is sadly not included in the price of the ticket).
And of course the Magna Carta.
I booked a guided tour of the grounds that lasted just over 1 hour. My guide on the day, Laura, was absolutely amazing. After, I walked the Walls, that took me over an hour with the free audio guide provided, but it can be done in less than half hour if pushed. Then a visit to the vault housing the Magna Carta and the prisons. Don't forget the chapel, the last surviving of its kind and a sad reminder of the Victorian separate system of penal justice.
Entrance to the grounds is free and all the staff and volunteers are superb. The cafe is great for a break and for kids we have Lucy!
All in all, a wonderful day out whether a solo traveller, couples or families with kids. Highly recommended!
J. L.
Excellent knowledgeable guide for the guided tour walk around the castle grounds. Despite cold, windy and wet weather he made it informative and fun. The wall walk is probably better saved for a warm day, but even on a windy February day we had good views of the cathedral and surrounding city below. The prison is interesting, particularly the Chapel designed for the separate system. I wouldn't bother visiting for the Magna Carta exhibit, there isn't really much to say and the cinema video is a little light on detail - presumably to cater for the widest possible audience, it's OK but not much more to say about it.
L. H.
The walk around the castle wall was amazing. The views of Lincoln are lovely.
We also visited the prison and Magna Carta. The prison had lots of activities to do, which we really enjoyed.
J. P.
Great experience, the wall walk is great but you might as well pay the extra £5 for the prison and Magna Carta. Fantastic views over Lincoln, the cathedral and surrounding area, as well as very interesting history with loads of information.
And of course the 800 year old Magna Carta is impressive in its own right!
a. T.
I gave the castle 3 stars, but that's a solid 3 stars. There isn't much to do here but if you like history its quite interesting.
The wall walk gives you great views over the city (obviously) and there is a guided tour around the grounds to get a better perspective of the history of Lincoln.
Id recommend it for a day trip but wait until there is an event on as when I've been in the past there have been archery stations and different sorts of arts and crafts on the grounds. I think it really comes in to its own when there are extra activities on the grounds.
Aside from a history walk there is also the georgian/victorian prison where you can walk around and join In a few of the interactive displays (these have been reduced a bit due to covid, as there used to be costume rooms etc where you could dress as a prisoner and take photos).
There is also, most of the time, a copy of the magna carta here along with a charter of the forest, accompanied by a small cinema room with a short film giving you some background on the documents. However, some parts of the year the magna carta is legally required to have a rest period, so if you're going exclusively to see it, then try to plan ahead.
R. R.
How's it taken me so long to visit? Marvellous and informative walk around the walls with an audio tour. Didn't do the buildings due to time constraints but always good to have an excuse to visit again
P. S.
We were on a Mystery Tour with National Holidays & part of tours included going to Lincoln Castle. Lovely place to walk around, although we didnt go into the castle itself, we walked all around the out skirts of the castle & took some photos instead. Very interesting place.
T. H.
Beautiful, amazing, awesome... loved this place so much I brought my husband and parents to see it. Worth the effort of going to Lincoln. Cultural quarter is lovely too.
P. H.
Lots of history and the best views of Lincoln for miles. If you're lucky you'll get a free Red arrows display when they're practising for a display.
J.
I visited the castle on a lovely sunny day and payed for the castle wall walk, The staff were very welcoming and friendly. I spent about 30 mins enjoying the walk but I mainly used my time getting some great photos.
A. R.
Interesting place to visit, the Victorian prison was particularly fascinating. The views from the castle walls are nothing short of spectacular.
I visited during the week of University graduations, so the grounds were quite busy by the time I had finished my visit, but I imagine they are quite spacious at other times.
L. P.
Nice place, guided tour recommended. Parking not great but a nice attraction. Lincoln Cathedral next door is very good and we enjoyed more.
C. M.
This Castle sits in the heart of Lincoln. It's directly opposite the Cathedral. The castle is definitely worth the visit.
Take one of the guided tours as the information you get is just superb. Our guide Paul was so knowledgeable, the amount of words that we use in our language that come from events in the past was a great bonus item.
Caught red handed - from the fact that thieves who stole dyed red cloth were easily found. Money for old rope - from the hangman who cut up the rope for souvenirs
Take the walk around the top of the castle walls, the view is splendid and definitely worth it
P. W.
A visit to Lincoln Castle and as a plus a nice view of Lincoln Cathedral from ontop of the castle walls. Home of the Magna Carta, a document of serious significance for today's world. It was hot on the wall, so on a warm day a cap/hat is a good idea.
Had a drink in the tearoom which was good. Also you can visit the Victorian prison which closed in 1878.
B. M.
Had great two day in Lincoln, looking around all the site, Walk up steep hill to the castle, had a walk around the castle walls, and sit in the grounds, lovely place to visit,
J. W.
Lincoln castle is amazing , i learnt so much whilst there , i'd advise the magna carta vault first it explains so much so that as you venture around the castle you get a feel of what it was like & the importance of these 3 important historical documents that are still relevant today ,its just incredible .. then when you visit the georgian/victorian gaol & realize that there is still a working crown court on these historical grounds it really is fascinating .. the walk around the castle walls is a must ,im a little unsure of false walkways but with the help & reassurance from my partner i made it round & im so glad i did .. its fabulous & the views are breathtaking ,you can see the cathedral .. There is so much there & so much to see & learn , there are real stories & short films to watch in the gaol ,the staff are really helpful & friendly .. i didnt get her name but one lady was so informative about the gaol, the unearthed sarcophagus
& so much more .. she was lovely we grabbed a coffee & a snack & she wished us a safe journey home .. absolutely brilliant day out & would love to return .. would definately recommend ,
M. S.
Wow, what a wonderful example of a Norman cathedral - vast and beautiful. We also visited the prison and the castle - brilliant - a steep walk up Steep Hill - very well worth it, and wondered views from the castle walls.
C. C.
We've visited Lincoln Castle several times in the past, but this was our first time to the illuminated Christmas event at the castle and it was brilliant! Compared to some other illuminated events, the price was excellent (£25.50 for a family of 4), totally worth every penny.
The staff are friendly and helpful, the music was beautiful, the castle looked amazing with the illuminations and altogether there was a very lovely atmosphere. The cafe and the gift shop too were open and there was a burger van in the castle grounds as well.
Lincoln Castle is great to visit throughout the year but this event made it all the more special, hopefully this will become a recurring event!
E. S.
Great time, took the guided tour and it's so worth it, such knowledge. So much to see and do, we spent 4 hours there and enjoyed every minute of it.
M. H.
I thought that this would be a fairly mundane affair seeing as there's no real castle to speak of but the tour by Ben was awesome and the history of the place is amazing. The walked walk is great, again the story is fabulous. The Magna carta exhibition is interesting if not a little underwhelming. Could you not allow dogs? My only gripe. We were going to be there for an hour or so but ended up there nearly all day. Fabulous
J. K.
Grand old castle, with beautiful walls and history. Perfect venue for the Asylum Steampunk Event. Check out the old men's prison for some really fascinating history.
R. M.
Always a great place to walk, parking near by a d a good point to access to the top end of Lincoln. Parking next to the castle cost us £5.50 for 3 hours.
They often have some sort of attraction and host outdoor cinema evenings through summer. The wall walk is reasonably priced and overs some amazing views of the city and history plaques to read if it interests you.
My boys aged 4 and 7 have asked to go back, and I will happily take them. Staff everyone I,have been have always been very friendly and helpful.
R. F.
Day out on my own, decided to do the Wall Walk, loved it, really good views of Lincoln and very interesting tour over the headsets
E. R.
Beautiful place!
Worth visiting.
The greatest view to the Cathedral from here.
G. W.
An amazing place to visit! So much history, including the Magna Carta and the old prison. Great for children and adults alike. The audio tour is so interesting. The castle has been made as accessible as possible too with lifts and ramps. The views from the castle walls are stunning. The shop and cafe are worth a visit too.
I. A.
Interesting tour. Weather wasn't good enough to do the wall walk unfortunately. Staff very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about their work. Superbly well kept and a variety of activities to do during the tour.
S. C.
Well worth a visit. Walk the walls to get stunning views. Visit the gaol for its macabre interests
I. B.
Lovely views of the city and cathedral on the wall walk. Would definitely recommend.
A. S.
What a beautiful piece of history! I can't believe that for only £14.50 you can walk the castle walls, see Magna Carta, and visit the Victorian prison. Excellent value for money, would have happily paid double!
K. K.
What a beautiful place with lots to see and beautiful gardens for picnics. Most definitely well worth a visit. We booked a day ticket which included entrance to see the Magna Carta, walk round the castle wall, the prison and a magnificent tour guide. Our guide Alan Read was wonderful and gave us a thorough insight of the history of the place.
E. T.
Wonderful touring on the ground of Lincoln castle and understanding the history behind it. Such a historical sight!
n. p.
Nice walk on the walls, great view of the cathedral and Lincoln! With the audio guide, it was fun at the start but it’s quite intense to listen to all the points
M. J.
Spot on if u like medieval attraction and great views.
Only cons is "the prison", in my opinion boring and quite sad, and possibility of seeing magna carta documents/the letters are so small u can't even see it...
G. S.
Great piece of history. You've to pay to see the Victorian prison and Magna Carta vault but we'll worth it.
B. H.
Really enjoyable day out, the kids favourite part was rolling down the hills inside the grounds, the whole area is full of history and views on top of the castle walks of the lincoln countryside is stunning
k. s.
They have Lucy the Dragon on display at the moment along side smaller dragons made from wire mesh in different colours. It is free to enter the castle. You only have to pay to do the castle wall walk and the other exhibits. The castle grounds are lovely. There is a cafe but you can have a picnic if you wish. Good fun for a family day out.
J. H. (. H.
Please, please please take the tour it is so informative. You will learn so much more about the castle and grounds that will make your visit, so much more enjoyable.
An hours tour with the guide- unmissable.
A walk around the medieval castle wall - fantastic views over the city and surrounding area.
Prison - just be thankful you were never a resident. Lots to see.
The Magna Carter - only 1 of 4 in the country
D. H.
The walk around the castle wall was great and kids 7 and 11 enjoyed it. Also a nice hill to roll down have a picnic inside the grounds which are open to none paying public. There are public toilets very close by to the castle. There were some steep narrow steps in parts of the wall walk which some less agile folk might find difficult. Great views of the city and also part of the church from the castle wall. The crown court building is also in the castle grounds which is a beautiful building.
T. D.
Christmas lights walk around the castle was lovely, nice food and hot drinks. Would definitely recommend
U. R.
It was sunny, great fun, there's Lucy t he dragon nice place for a stroll 🐲
A. M.
Lincoln is like a mini York aovrly historic city. The Castle is well worth a visit and the Magna Carta makes it more special historically.
A. M.
Went for Asylum Steampunk Festival at August Bank Holiday weekend, it was truly marvelous experience!
R. R.
Amazing place to visit with so much to see. Staff are very friendly and knowledge too.
A. C.
One of the many places to visit. Not over crowded, good place to spend a relaxing time with family. Plenty of space for the youngsters to run and play. Not a lot to do unless you enjoy looking at 'old buildings ' which I do. Love strolling around the grounds, admiring the structures.
G.
Whether you're from Lincoln or a visitor, Lincoln Castle is such a great place to go. The wall walk is fantastic. Views and photo ops are amazing.
A. S.
Great place. Lots of exhibitions. Wonderful history fantastic tourist destination. Breathtaking views
K. D.
Wonderful place to spend time as lots of interesting history. The guided tour of the castle was great and the audio tour really brought the place to life
S. W.
Wow what a supper place , loads to see and do and most of it is free, the wall walk is a must ( pay for this) well worth it. I will be back
M. S.
Loved it, the Chapel in the prison was quite scary. Loved the walk around the wall.
E. C.
Great day out scenery at castle and cathedral are amazing
Y. Y.
I came on a great sunny day albeit a bit late so the tour is already done for the day. I decided to only take the wall ticket and I think it was amazing.
Walking on the caste wall allows you to see many things around Lincoln. They also provide you with some displayed narratives about what you see from where you stand dotted around the wall. Not to mention also that you get a really good views on the cathedral.
Apart from the wall, the castle ground is also a good place to enjoy your day. It is quite spacious with several trees if you are looking for shades. On a good sunny day it will really be a great place to just sit and enjoy the weather.
J.
Great time here, enjoyed a walk around and inside the castle. Loved the prison. If you've never been you've got to walk up a steep hill to get to the castle.
S. F.
Awesome historical location with lots of shops and other olde worlde type stuff around it. Great cafes located right on the doorstep of the castle entrance a must visit place if you are in the area. Be warned the hills to one side of the castle are very steep so be prepared for a workout. But it will be worth it.
R. K.
Fantastic views walking the wall of the castle. Lovely setting. Highly recommended.
j. d.
Spent several hours here, on a weekend break to Lincoln... And we can't fault it, the grounds are stunning and we'll maintained, all the staff where enthusiastic and informative, was a shame some aspects of tour where limited due to covid restrictions but still had a great visit. And the views from the castle wall are stunning
p. d.
We only did the courtyard and grass area due to short of time but it was really good ,very clean well kept. There are information plaques and monuments telling the history of the castle and the prison. The cafe on site does excellent cake and snacks
G. E.
A very well preserved castle with complete walls and interesting history, well documented. Set in a very imposing position at the top of the hill opposite the cathedral.
G. J.
Great day out, not counting the weather. Super helpful and friendly staff. Used the park and ride at Waitrose and got off at the Cathedral stop. Short walk past the Cathedral and into castle. Well maintained grounds plenty of space for the children to run around. Castle wall walk has some stunning views over Lincoln. The Victorian Jail very well laid out and informative but top attraction was the Magna Carta. The cinema gives a good overview and then the visit to the vault. Everybody should see this document and understand where the freedoms we enjoy today began. Daughter (11) loved it.
R. P.
Worth the toil up the very steep hill and entrance money to view one of the 3 original copies of the Magna Carta and Henry II's Charter of the Forest, plus a simply splendid walk around the Castle Walls (be aware that this involves many steps). Add to this a tour round the Victorian prison - all in all a really worthwhile experience
J. B.
I went to Lincoln castle for my granddaughter's graduation, it is a beautiful setting in a lovely city, my wife and I will definitely be having a visit to do some sightseeing.
K. D.
Nice to be able to walk the grounds for free & still grt a feel for the place.
The little shop & café are lovely - and the speciality hot chocolates are shamazing!
L. A.
Love to visit the castle even after climbing the dreaded hill. There was an event on within the castle where there were many food vendors. This made a lovely change. However there is a cafe on site and toilets which I have visited previously and the toilets where well maintained and the cafe was lovely.
V. T.
Visited on a Sunday. Nice and quiet. Was able to quietly look around the cathedral first which was open to visitor's then the castle. I highly recommend the prison tour , the tour guides have a great laugh and bring history alive. Very family friendly. There are lots of steps so please take care especially if you are not good on your feet. Plenty to see from the battlements. Great day out
S. R.
Fun day out. Interesting learning about the prison and stunning walk on top of the castle walls
L. L.
A great day out and very reasonable ticket prices, well worth buying the day ticket rather than just the wall walk. If the weather's fine, get the wall walk in first. Delicious hot chocolate in the cafe £2.50 - a bargain!
A. s.
Great couple wandering around taking in the scenery and learning of the past.
D. H.
Great you can go in and relax on the grass etc and it's wonderful when they have events on like the dragon. However we found the cost of the wall walk to be a bit much, looking at £25+ for our family of 4 which meant we just didn't do it. I know there's a season pass but you'd only want to go once so seems pointless
P. C.
Amazing day out. Lovely clean environment. We had great weather to walk around the castle wall. Staff member at the magna Carter was knowledgeable and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Children loved meeting Lucy! (The dragon) Gift shop even had real armour for sale!
Would absolutely recommend!
we also visited the cathedral and walked steep Hill whilst in Lincoln.
A. 0.
Great views from the castle walls and scenery. But cafe had little vegan choice and was too expensive. We went during the 1940s theme day. The pop up stalls were far too dear for what was served. You can't simply walk through the grounds to the other side of Lincoln centre without paying the admission fee. However, there was plenty of parking closely which was good.
G. R.
Really informative interesting tour of the prison, lovely grounds and great views from the walk around the castle. All staff were friendly and helpful. The whole area was very clean.
p. c.
Great place to walk around and good history plus hidden gem the Magna carta
M. C.
A well-managed and maintained place, still houses a working Crown Court. Tom, our tour guide was excellent, a very lively and animated tour. £15 isn't too bad considering that it's for all activities.
M.
It was definitely worth it to buy a whole day ticket that included the walls, prison, Magna Carta and a guided audio tour.
D. H.
We was in Lincoln to watch the Cycling National Championships and decided whilst we were here to visit the castle. Grounds were well kept and presented well. Activities for the kids in the Victorian prison kept them entertained. Could benefit from an activity trail throughout the grounds (walls, vault, prison etc.) and more exhibitions showcasing the history through the ages (there was limited artifacts to view). However on the whole it was great, and just worth going to see the Magna Carta alone!
S. W.
Great day with the kids. We did the tour of the prison and the walk along the walls. Lucy, the dragon in the walls is great and there were some people telling stories for the kids too. Had a really great time here.
D. W.
Really interesting visit..the Victorian prison is an eye opener, especially the stories about the inmates.
The chapel is something else.
Great to see an actual version of the magna carta.
Good coffee from the cafe
Great walk around the castle walls.
You need a head for heights up the observatory tower.
Very enjoyable day
K. K.
After a bracing walk up the hill, the castle was an excellent way to spend a couple of hours. The wall walk commanded fantastic views and the audio guide was interesting. The Victorian prison was also interesting and it was wonderful to see one of the four copies of the Magna Carta. In addition the cafe was excellent and the gift shop well stocked.
A. H.
Excellent, really good day out ,magna carta ,prison ,really enjoyed it
A. P. H.
Lovely quiet environment, beautiful castle wall, you can walk along, lots of grass to picnic on, cafe on site with indoor and outdoor seating. Opens at 10am and you can spend a few hours here without any effort. Close to Lincoln Cathedral so you can make a day of it
k. R.
Very lively and vibrant city. History round every corner
A. S.
Wonderful time at Lincoln Castle, went to the Picnic Social.
Wonderful food, great music, perfect surroundings.us nice to see Lucy on our walk round.
100% lovely day :)
g. b.
Wall walk a highlight for me, wonderful views across city and to horizon. Castle information very good, clean and well maintained. Victorian prison also good but air of sadness apparent
N. T.
So much history.
Well worth a visit.
Great view from the walk at the top of the castle.
H. T.
Very cool castle. Free to get into the grounds. Definitely worth a visit.
L. F.
Great place to visit. Take your time and listen to the audio guide on the wall walk. Awesome views of the Cathedral and town. Super value compared to some castles I've visited. Allow around 2 hours to see it all.
S. A.
A very good tour by our guide (make sure to book it early). A lot of great insights into the history of the castle. Amazing to see an original Magna Carta. If you go on the wall walk I recommend you use the audio guide on your phone. It gives a very good overview of the castle and it's history, although I had heard some of our from the tour guide earlier. One downside is that Cobb hall and the Astrometry tower are currently closed due to covid restrictions. Hopefully that will not be for much longer.
Y. H.
Attended on a Saturday and not too crowded. I purchased the
Castle Day Ticket at £14.50 (Includes the Medieval Wall Walk, Victorian Prison and Magna Carta)
The Victoria Prison and Magna Carta were feeling interesting but it was the medieval wall walk I enjoyed the most. Wonderful views. You can pay for the wall walk separate at £10 but at £14.50 may as well opt for that.
May be beneficial to boom in advance and choose the time of entry for the Magna Carta, as on the day it could be some time before it's available
K. W.
A lovely place to visit, especially with children. On the day we visited there were characters and historical set ups around the grounds of the castle.
Visits to the grounds are free.
If you want to walk around the castle walls, visit the prison and see the magna carter this is an additional cost. £38 for a family ticket. Our visit filled the whole day.
I would recommend taking own drinks / food as the cafe had run out of water - we were mindful that we visited at a busy time and during very hot weather so this may not always be the case.
Staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Interesting castle, although mostly the walls remain. Confusing information given to you at the entrance - book online as it saves you money, spaces available etc etc - in reality no spaces available as sold out, and the prices the same. Signs confusing and people unsure where to go when entering/leaving the shop to buy tickets. One person there trying to do everything - didn’t work!! Great place to find some peace and quiet tucked away around the back of the court building. Nice that you can walk around inside the castle walls with no charge. Definitely needs some clarity for what is/isn’t free/charged as lots of confused people unfortunately. However despite that would highly recommend a visit and the wall walk is excellent with fantastic views from the top of the Cathedral and surrounding area.
P. D.
It was ok - only went to see the magma carter like everyone else. Be ready for the hike up a very steep hill to get to it though and wear sensible shoes!!! Went on a Thursday and it was nice and quiet!
M. H.
Excellent tour of the grounds, great walk on the walls, fabulous views of the city. Wonderful to see Magna Carta and picnic in the grounds. Could take the dog too as it was a dog friendly weekend.
J. R.
Lincoln cathedral is amazing! So much history and incredible inside. It can be challenging to reach walking up Steep hill, but there are plenty of shops on route to take a rest. Well worth a visit.
K.
Very interesting place to visit. Has a great walk around the castle wall, with audio if you want. We liked it. We could listen to what we wanted to when we wanted. Very informative. The prison was very accessible with information and activities. Amazing film to help set the scene in the castle too. And finally the Magna Carta...what tiny writing!
S. D.
Lots to do, high wall walk with lift access. The grounds are free.
B. J.
Lincoln Castle is free to enter and is a lovely place to wander around. You have to pay to enter the goal and to walk the walls. Both are excellent and included is around a 1 hour guided tour of the grounds describing the history of the castle. There is an audio guide for the walls walk. A great place to visit and a great half day experience. The Crown Court is apparently a great place to visit when the court is stitting. The court rooms are worth seeing. When we were there the court wasn't sitting and when asked if we can see the court room, we were told that whilst 'justice was open to all, the buildigs weren't". Highly recommended.
M. A.
This was a great experience. I have walked the wall and looked in the victorian prison many times now and it's always an interesting experience. The wall walk is a great opportunity to see the whole of lincoln and the cathedral and the gaol has been converted into a wonderful museum about the castle. The castle hosts a functioning Crown Court too. If you like history and old architecture then it's definitely worth a visit. 10/10 would learn again.
M. D.
Lovely place, staff very knowledgeable. Tea room was great
C. A.
I only walked around the grounds. Its lovely. One of the nicest people I've met was at the gate to answer questions and help. I hank you be y much indeed to that lovely lady!
J. H.
A stunning location with amazing history. The catering stalls and marquee are expensive so bring your own unless you don't mind paying 4x retail prices. Due to my coeliac condition I was unable to find anything to eat either, so as a family we decided to save our money and settled for a drink only. There was something like a busy beach atmosphere, especially as the grass has dried to become a dusty place to sit. There are shady areas, but not many, so take your own as it is a sun trap.
A. D.
The castle was great. Busier than usual and out of food, so we were disappointed not to get lunch.
I'd have thought that they could have planned catering better - it was a planned event.
B. A.
Very beautiful cathedral and castle ,parking is very limited and small spaces and short turning points .
Cathedral stunning inside and out treasury room worth a visit placards small to read . Local shops on cobble streets some inclines to walk .
Local public houses check out some good prices and food others limited menus and drinks pricey . Overall lovely place to visit with historical sites.
T. B.
Really enjoyed it great place to spend a 2 to 3 hours of your time.
Really worth the fee to get in.
A. M.
Only walked the grounds, as we felt the entry price too steep, but nice that the grounds are free to walk. They're well kept and had a little quiz for kids. Shame it's all a little too pricey.
M. C.
Such a lovely visit. The audio tour of the walls kept my 8 year old instrested all the way round. A visit to the prison was well worth it too. Lovely grounds.
S. P.
Lots to see, very informative boards to read, great walk around the top of the medieval walls. We joined a free guided tour and the leader was very friendly and made the tour very interesting.
H. K.
Absolutely fascinating place to visit. Reasonable entrance prices. £38 for a family day ticket. You get to tour the prison, see the Magna Cata and walk the walls. Its free to enter the castle grounds. Great day out if you've not been.
R. J.
Not bad to walk around the walls
R. P.
A great place to visit. Take time to visit the town. It really is a nice place to spend the day.
I. B.
So wonderful! We enjoyed the place and the surroundings. You can have a small picnic, relax on the grass or walk around. Next time we will visit inside also as today we could not! ❤
D. S.
Currently free to walk inside the grounds. This doesn't seem to be advertised outside but the man on the gate encouraged us in. Small stall selling sweet treats and coffee. Nice place to sit outside and watch the world go by for 30 mins.
N. E.
Really interesting place to visit and enjoyable for kid's too. Lovely place steeped in history. Wall walk was my favourite thing to do there.
R. U.
The price was worth all the history from the magna carta to the prison and the walk around the walls amazing views
D. C.
Free entry to the castle grounds, but will need to buy tickets for the wall walk, victoriana prison, and the guided tour. The lawns inside are beautifully kept and the trees provide some much needed shade in summer
M. C.
Free entry and free to walk the walls. Only a small fee to wander around the old prison buildings so full of interesting history. We'll worth a visit and child friend.
E. S.
Amazing castle packed with history. Seeing the Magna Carta was very special! The wall walk allows you to see cathedral and surrounding areas for miles around. Could easily spend a few hours here just taking it all in
J. M.
Yeah, cool, solid English castle. Loved looking around the old prison, great view from walls. Basic but fresh food in cafe. We did everything and it took about 3 hours.
w. a.
Great place to visit. Brilliant walk around the castle wall.
K. B.
Very good. Grounds are free. You will need tickets for buildings and walk around the walls. Very enjoyable couple of hours.
M. H.
Our enjoyment was only spoilt by the attitude of the cafe staff who were rude when we told them that they had over charged and only when shown 2 lots of written proof (chalk board and typed table menu) did they reimburse us. All other castle staff were brilliant and helpful.
P. “. B.
Very well maintained castle. Good staff, very chatty, cheerful but informative guide, full of historical facts (some of which were sadly repeated in the wall walk). Very basic cafe.
J. M.
Great to walk round the top of the castle walls..great views of the Cathedral and Lincoln.
K. W.
Enjoyed the view over the countryside from the walls.
d. p.
Was outside castle but looked lovely had walk round cathedral absolutely beautiful to see it with scaffold away. Great day. Love Lincoln
s. d.
Wonderful historic castle keep.
You can walk along the keep walls and imagine the battles between king Stephen and Emporess Matilda and that of the French King and Henry III forces at a later date. It holds one of the best preserved copies on the Magna Carta and was also used as a Victorian prison.
We visit most weekends being members and soak in the atmosphere of our local history
s. w.
The grounds are free, admission is a bit pricey, but you do get to see an original Magna carta. The old prison is interesting, fascinating insight into the past. Walking the walls allows fantastic views, and the audio guide reveals Lincoln's rich past.
M. N.
Loved the cathedral well worth a visit
K. C.
Amazing views. Lots of historical data and architecture. If lucky there is sometimes a good festival there but otherwise many restaurants, tea rooms and cafe to choose from.
I. P.
Great time during steam punk weekend
G. U.
Well worth a visit at any time of the year but especially lovely when the annual Christmas market is on. The setting is beautiful and if the weather is crisp and frosty, a hot spicy cider goes down so well.
S. F.
Great place to spend time. Free to get into castle grounds but worth the entrance fee to walk the castle walls, visit the Victorian prison and see the Magna Carta. Well one of the Four remaining. Food and drink available at cafe, with great prices.
P. W.
Such a good 3 hrs here. Plenty to do and see. We paid for the prison and wall, and because Horrible Histories is a real like of my 9 yr old grandson, he was in his element in regards to the Magna Carta being there. Loads to see from the castle walls, really friendly staff, Covid aware. Great.
J. H.
Very well kept. Staff friendly and informative, beautiful views of the cathedral from the walk around the castle wall. Really enjoyed my visit just ashame we couldn't check out the dungeon and tower due to covid restrictions.
D. L.
Plenty to see and do. The Magna Carter is a must see. Children and wheel chair friendly. Cafe, toilets and plentiful seating areas.
D. j.
Fascinating castle that I had not visited for about 60 years. There is so much that is accessible now including much of the old prison and the complete walk of the castle walls.
R. K.
A castle full of history and the prison is very interested too. For £15 I was disappointed the guided tour was an audio tour for me that's not a guided tour and then also the magna carta cinema was shut so felt value for money wise was on the pricey side considering these two things
A. B.
Even though I am from Lincoln, I still had to make another visit upon my return. And why wouldn't you when general admissions are free. The walk around the wall looks really good and I will do it next time for sure.
T. R.
I always visit the Castle when I visit Lincoln and view the City from the ramparts to reminisce of my time growing up in Lincoln. Not to be missed if visiting Lincoln. Well worth the entrance fee. Shame about the climb up The Strait to get there.
S. C.
Very interesting place, lots of great information but not too much to overload. Amazing how much history there is in one place! The jail was awesome and really cool to think of the conditions back in the Victorian times compared to nowadays. Amazing views from the wall walk as well. The joint cathedral and castle ticket is great value for money and I highly recommend!
C. V. d. w.
Went to the Castle grounds recently and I loved the atmosphere that is currently there, it's all decked out with Christmas light, trees, reindeers and even fake snow section. It looks beautiful and had such a lovely vibe to just walk around.
A. H.
We arrived pretty late in the day so we were sadly too late to visit the prison or see the Magna Carta itself. Might be worth revisiting for that reason.
What we were able to do was walk the castle ramparts which was fun and informative as there are information points detailing what you are looking at. It was great to see the prison architecture differences between Victorian rear and Georgian facade. The views of the surrounding parts of the city and countryside was very cool.
Also the famous cathedral is a short walk away and you have great views of it from the walled walk.
Covid management procedures were in place so that was good to see.
Overall a definite place to visit and I feel it's one that tends to go under the radar of a lot of people from down south.
.
S. M.
Love the castle. Nice place for a picnic, great walks around the castle walls to, at a cost. Definitely worth a visit a l9ng with the cathedral too
D. D.
The place is steep in history and in December they have Christmas markets
K. C.
Relatively small castle - but the sights were well maintained (with friendly volunteers and staff!)
Besides the history of the castle and the Magna carta, there was quite a lot of “prison activities” to try in the prison area, and the prison chapel is definitely worth seeing!
C. D.
Can visit her without paying. You have to pay to walk around the walls. Did this years ago with some good views.
T. S.
Informative and interesting with great views from observatory tower. There's even a dragon in the walls
E. S.
Loved walking around the castle walls with my 2 boys, it was a fascinating walk with a really interesting history. The prison was a great visit too with great displays and facts, then a trip down to visit the Magna Carter (shame the lift was broken but usually pushchair and wheelchair accessible). The shop.was good and has fun toys and good quality gifts.
The cafe was the the only disappointment, its clean and well presented but the staff were rude and unhelpful. On this particular day, they were short staffed but still the waitress that served us was so rude it was uncomfortable. There wasn't a vegan/dairy free option and no sandwiches at midday.
Its a shame because we've been before and enjoyed it but today wasn't a good example of customer service. Also plastic disposable cups!
A. S.
Fantastic day out. Steep hill will test you but once at the top you can relax in the castle grounds free of charge.
A. J.
Wonderful place, loads of fantastic history and you get a good work out climbing the steps and walking along the castle walls, where you get some amazing views, definitely coming back again, and the guide we had Mike L was a laugh and very pleasant
j. D.
It's private costs a bit but it's worth the money. The prison is well presented with stories in a few cells. They hold also one of the 4 remaining Magna Carta documents which is amazingly preserved. Wall walk with audio guide, not all accessible though due to some narrow stairs unfit for covid rules. Will visit again. Totally recommend even in these times. Grounds you can visit for free, loads of people around and about.
S. K.
Stunning. The wall walk is a great way to see the city
A. R.
Well worth a walk around the castle wall. Some lovely views of Lincoln all around.
Lift up to wall if required, but there are a number of steps once you get half way round.
Disability toilets can also be found in the grounds.
S. W.
Lovely place to visit. Prison small but interesting and walk round walls was the best bit however getting to view one of the only 4 Magna carta copies in the world was special
R. H.
Lincoln castle is perfect to walk around solo and explore or with friends and family. Visit during special events for a more meaningful experience.
- Easy Parking
- Small roads
- Close to cathedral
- Amazing views
- Castle wall walk
- Food and town nearby
- Magna Carta viewing
Take a stroll through the gardens, walk through the jail, view the Magna Carta, or take in the views from the castle wall all for a very reasonable price. Nearby parking is only around £6 for four hours. The place is great for kids to run around for free or pay a little bit to see the extras.
W. G.
Wall walkway is brilliant. Loved the dragon. Fun picnic event running during holidays. Magna carta interesting with good film. Prison is an acquired taste.
C. T.
Had a wonderful day, from the car park to walking along the walls.
G. J.
Great place to visit. Free to enter, walk through and to visit the coffee shop.. Payment required to go onto the walls.
S. C.
Awesome picnic event. Relaxed and clean space
S. M.
Lincoln Castle is situated at the top of steep hill in the bailgate area of Lincoln and opposite Lincoln Cathedral, the Castle is quite impressive and is steeped in history, from walking around the Castle on top of the walls to visiting the old prison and the prisoners Chapel there is plenty to see and do there, they even have a copy of the historical Magna Carta, it is a very pleasant experience if you like that sort of thing. I would highly recommend
A. W.
Great attraction for both tourist and residents.
G. D.
Lovely walk around the castle, social distancing in place but kids still enjoying themselves (rolling down the hill). Plenty of history to be learnt without entering the buildings, coffee shop offering a take out service- without having to go into the café itself.
A. D.
Very big and a nice place to walk around thought ( and I understand it needs money for upkeep ) it is a shame you have to pay to get on the walls and in the prison but overall a nice place :)
A.
Really enjoyed this place. Our first visit here and we will be going again. We did the wall walk first which was great. Then we went inside the jail which was also really interesting. Then we went to the cathedral which was included in with the ticket. Thoroughly good day out.
J. B.
So much history. Old roman fort. Castle built on top of Roman post. Jail. Huge city walls. Enormous cathedral. Gift shop has sir Lancelot's armour!!! Super cool
G. D.
The tour guide Gordon was fantastic he certainly new his stuff 😀
This is really a beautiful place full of history
N. N. J.
Good place overall. Nice historical area (signing of Magna Carta). Old prison. Tickets reasonable. Friendly staff. The walled walk is great views from the tip of the castle. Overall 1 to 1.5 hours. Great views of cathedral.
L. J.
An amazing day out, beautiful grounds, gorgeous surroundings. We went on a medieval walk and got to see the Magna Carta. The kids absolutely loved it.
C. T.
We spent a lovely day at Lincoln castle. Spectacular view of the cathedral. Learned about Lincoln prison and the famous prisoners including Wesley. Ladies toilets were quite amusing.
T. W.
A brilliant place full of history and many stories of the people that have lived there or were imprisoned in Lincoln jail. The exhibitions and rooms in jail were fantastic as they were very informative and interactive. The guides were superb too! A great day out for the family with lots to see and do.
J. M.
Lovely place, excellent for a picnic
N. L.
A great place to go for the day ,use the park and ride only £2.60 return 😀 takes you to the cars away walk down the hill to the town lot of shops 😀
m. f.
We went to the Lincoln sausage Festival held at the castle. A good atmosphere with lots of sausage related food to be had. They cater for non meat eaters too. Live music and a cookery demo. Hook a sausage, face painting, swing boats and circus skills for the little ones. (or big ones!) Cheese, churros and many other stalls with most taking card payments. All in all a good family outing. The best part it was only £1 entry!! Looking forward to next years visit. 😋😊
S. P.
Great place to visit, informative, kids enjoyed it. Not everthing was available due to covid restrictions. The wall walk is good and has amazing views over Lincoln. We spent around 3 hours here, I doubt you could spend any longer. We had a walk round the surrounding area afterwards, the cathedral is amazing and nice shops, cafés in the area too.
M. W.
Beautiful grounds really well looked after the place is immaculate. Plenty of seating to relax and take it all in. Admission free to the grounds if you just fancy a wander around and relax. Nice cafe and a good gift shop. Hard to believe your in a city. Well worth a visit.
R. B.
Love Lincoln and love the castle. Nicely kept grounds, gardens and buildings though to walk the walls is pretty expensive and we haven't done it to date.
R. B.
We went to the castle for the Christmas light show. You have to book online before you go. I would recommend a tip if it was part of a night out to see all the Christmas lights in lincoln starting at the station finishing with the castle. Or the other way round. Its not worth travelling to see on its own. If you have mobility issues then give it a miss as you have to enter though the entrance opposite the cathedral then exit though the back down the drawbridge slope then have to go around the outside of the castle to get back.
The kids enjoyed it especially the snow machine.

Hi I have included pictures of the entrance costs to the Castle and Cathedral below FYI.
We went here and loved it. The access to the castle grounds is free. The additional entrance costs are for access to the Magna Carta vault, prison tour and walk along the castle walls. But it was a pleasant visit even without paying to see the additional sights. But will come back when we have more time.
There are a number of pay and display car parks around the castle and cathedral. I paid £5.80 for 4 hrs of parking which was directly outside the entrance to the castle.
There are some amazing shops in between the castle and cathedral. We went to the Mouse House Cheese and Coffee Shop for a bite to eat and it was a great place to experience with friendly staff and a great choice of cheese. I have attached a number of pictures from there too.
The Cathedral was amazing too inside but again. I didn't pay to fully access the cathedral and will do it when we have more time. As you get access to the main section of the cathedral and access to the higher levels if you aren't afraid of heights. But saying that entrance to the main reception is free and you can get a good view of the cathedral from the inside. As you can see from the pictures below. There is also access to the small church of Mary Magdalene which is free and accessed through the main cathedral to the left as soon as you enter.
At present there is a lot of scaffolding and restoration work going on outside the cathedral so beware of this. But as per the pictures there is still a lot you can see of the outside.
Both places have some great greens which you can picnic on if you wish. So a great place to visit on a day out.
O. P.
great historical place to spend time, to visit Cathedral, castle, walk by the High Street and visit local shops and cafe's
J. G.
Beautiful place to visit. The sometimes steep cobbled roads leading to the castle are filled with beautiful little shops and T-rooms so very picturesque. You will definitely find unique items to buy. The castle was free to visit as there was nothing on that day. Very clean and nostalgic. We did this trip along with staying in bainland lodge's so we could jump in the spa's for achy legs at the end of a perfect day.
I.
Visited last Sat when they had a Victorian show in the grounds. Went to do the wall walk only at £8 but staff said they could only do the complete ticket today @ £14. It was a good view from the walls. We used the audio equipment which was interesting. All the staff were friendly and warm which was lovely to see. Wife and I enjoyed the Victorian Prison. Shame the court house wasn’t open to some degree as it would have given a little more ‘value for money’ for the entry fee. Felt it was a bit steep at £14 each as there’s not a lot more inside the grounds to to see apart from the prison and the walls. Hence 4 not 5 stars. We understood it goes towards the up keep but couldn’t understand really why we couldn’t take the cheaper option of the wall walk if we wanted ?
I. M.
Well maintained and lots of history here - great views of the cathedral and Lincoln town. Little expensive for what you get in comparison to other historic sites. If short on time I would visit the cathedral instead, but if you have the time then definitely worth a visit.
J. B.
Yes enjoyed Lincoln Castle only problem was there was nowhere to keep my wife there. No spare dungeons at all.
L. H.
Beautiful and beautiful surrounds, in the heart of Lincoln.
a. n.
Really loved the wall walk, so much better now you can get all the way round and see full views of the city. Worth paying a bit extra to get the day ticket as you can get a return visit included within six months, what we saw of the Lego Castle exhibition was good, although felt that maybe we missed some.
f.
Good covid rules, clear on mask requirements and distancing measures in place. Book online to choose your time slot for the Magna Carta and the Victorian prison. Highly recommended the castle wall walk as it offers fantastic views of Lincoln and the cathedral.
B. F.
We had a lovely day yesterday visiting the wave. We didn't look at the rest of the attractions as they are a but costly for a family of 4 and we knew our young children wouldn't have enjoyed it. We had a very good an informative chat with one of the guides regarding the age of the buildings within the grounds.
All in all, it was. Great day out.
Since this review, we decided to purchase the family 12 month ticket. It was a good decision, just before summer started.
We have seen loads of stuff now & the ticket has practically paid for itself.
The Atkinson horses were amazing, the medieval knights were awesome, the Halloween spooktacular was interesting & funny, the Lego event was amazing. Thoroughly enjoyed everything we've been to see.
J. S.
Went here today for my 1 hour exercise, it was lovely and sunny, and there were so many people (all socially distanced of course). Love how its free to sit in the court and spend the day there. So enjoyable.
T. B.
Lots to see and the majority of the castle, museum and prison is open to explore.
There was not as much made of the 4 battles involving Lincoln (Stephen vs Matilda, John vs the barons, Henry lll vs Prince Louis, and during the Civil War) as I'd expect; perhaps an opportunity for the future.
Still a very informative couple of hours and worth the price of admission.
P. E.
Most stuff shut due to Covid, but free castle with nice grounds to visit on a sunny day
J. T. &. C.
Excellent castle for touring. You can walk the wall all the way around which provides amazing views of the city. I highly recommend seeing all the indoor displays on arrival and leaving the outside castle touring for later. You do not want to run out of time and miss seeing the Magna Carta (The Charter of the Forest, 1217, and a small crossbow were in the same display area, but I understand those two exhibit spaces are for rotating artifacts). The staff was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions that weren't covered in the film presentation downstairs. Once back outside, there is an elevator or spiral staircase to allow you access to the wall walk. Of special note is the access to the prisoner cells in one of the towers which I might not have noticed had it not been for our friend who toured us around. There are a few surprises to be discovered.
D. D.
It's a lovely place for spending day out with family! Some part of castle's wall is wheelchair accessible, views are beautiful! Ticket prices reasonable, we paid £35 for 'all inclusive' family ticket with return within 6 months, so it's a good price to see the prision, having a wall walk and cathedral visit.
M. S.
Amazing place. Really well kept and loads to look at. Just the castle would get 5* but the Coffee shop really lets it down. Grumpy staff and dire offer. Otherwise would be 5* as the castle is fabulous!
D. L.
Excellent grounds, knowledgeable staff. Shame all the interactives are off! Projector in the magna carter room is well out of alignment.
d. s.
Not the usual type of castle as it has a victorian prison inside the walls which you can visit. It also has a original copy of the magna carta. Lincoln courthouse is also inside the walls which you can't get inside. Nice way to pass 2 or 3 hours and the cathedral is only a couple of hundred metres away, easy to fill the day up visiting both and lunch in between the 2 in one of various places in the close vicinity.
J. M.
Spent a couple of days in Lincoln and had a thoroughly good time.
The Castle is a 'must'.
Great views from the Castle walls.
The prison is very interesting.
The grounds are lovely.
d. l.
Absolutely loved it. Good value but I recommend buying a dual Cathedral and Castle ticket from the Cathedral FIRST as you'll save a few quid if you intend on going to both.
Staff were knowledgeable and friendly engaging with adults and children alike.
d.
Well worth a visit if you're visiting Lincoln.
Save a bit of money and buy the joint tickets for the Castle and the Cathedral.
£17.20 for both but you can return to the Cathedral with the same ticket.
We spent about 4 hours between the two places.
Lovely Castle walk all the way around the top of the wall with fantastic views of the city and surrounding area.
The prison, which is inside the Castle grounds is another bonus and can easily spend an hour or so there reading the history and watching films of prisoners stories and fates.
R. D.
Great to visit, very knowledgeable and friendly staff, lots of interesting history, lovely grounds, café, well worth visiting.
K. S.
It cost £15 to get in but was well worth it I would recommend that you visit the castle
A. S.
Brilliant staff, fantastic range of history to take in: prison, signing of the magna carta, the castle through the ages. Great views of lincoln. Well worth the visit, concession tickets too!
E. L.
Amazing place, history, views, interactive options, jolly staff and the Millionaires shortbread wasn't bad!! Stayed over three hours could have been a lot longer. Oh, you need to be sure footed and have energy, a lot of steps and such like but in the prison there are lifts. Loved it.
L. S.
Wonderful historical buildings and grounds. Well worth getting the all inclusive ticket which not only allows you to visit the Magna Carter vault, the Victorian Prison and do the wall walk but allows you to have a free second visit within 6 months of the purchase date. (Not valid if other events are being held) Well worth a visit. I'm a local and still enjoy visiting. You can also purchase an all inclusive ticket which also allows access to the cathedral too.
A. C.
One of the main locations within Lincoln. From a young novice history buff to seasoned living history professor you will find something to delightfully occupy your time and reward your efforts in travelling to the venue. Hosting the Magna Carter document and or the Deeds to the Forest depending on the time of year. Also has very family friendly facilities and on certain days of the year dog friendly too :) check website for details in advance best advice and can't go wrong.
L. H.
This is a wonderful Castle with a load of History but as it did not see to much action in its time thankfully it is still mainly complete however you can not get to see all of it just some. It also still houses the local magistrates courts for the town, which is a master piece of a building in its own rights, the old Edwardian &Victorian prisons are also still inside the grounds complete so you can also take a look at them while your at it, but the real bit of history in Lincoln Castle is the Magnorcarter Which was sign here after the King's got to big for there boots lol take a look learn some history about the place the old town area is fantastic as well with shops and bits of the older Roman fort still about as well.
D. F.
On the whole, not a bad place to visit. Quite expensive for what is available though. Victorian prison is interesting with video accounts of inmates and the Magna Carta exhibition is good, but the projected imagery on the walls needs sorting as you couldn't see it if sat at the back of the room.
Battlement walk is good and well organised allowing only a couple up at a time so be prepared to wait a little.
Cafe open, but only serving takeaway from the doorway so we investigated the old town instead.
Worth visiting to lose and hour or so.
M. P. P.
Loved the Asylum steampunk festival here
P. W.
As with the cathedral, the castle has much to offer. We got there on the tour bus which is a nice extra while visiting Lincoln. We had 3 guides at different times. Carol, Paul & Alan. Unfortunately even though we had booked the tour it wasn't available as (unbeknown to us) it was a Steam Punk weekend. We had never heard of this before but had seen people in their attaire a couple of days earlier. The castle was the centre point and it was great seeing people dressed up... Just like on a film set. The castle was beautiful. You can get up to "walk the walls" via a spiral staircase. Some of the footings creak and younger children can be quite scared. The views of Lincoln are spectacular and its well worth the walk round. The prison block also houses some of the Magna Carta although no photography is allowed and its a darkened, cool room. Amazing to be that close to a massive piece of history. A cinema depicting the story is just to the left as you come out. It was a lovely day and learning not just Lincoln history but also about StwamPunk was fascinating. Well worth a visit
H. C.
Had a really wonderful afternoon exploring everything with my best friend. My only complaint would be that the auido guide for the wall walk claims to have an "access" option but no subtitles. Even turning it up to full volume wasn't any help for a deaf person like me!
N. J. W.
Lincoln castle is one of the few castles in Britain with all the walls in tact. High up on a hill you get good views of the city bellow and of the Cathedral. You can buy tickets to visit both the castle and cathedral.
S. A.
Absolutely amazing, our guide Malcolm Ross was very informative, he was great, real asset to the castle
B. S.
Loved this place .Had a great day .lots of history to find out ..prison cells very interesting. Lovely grounds and a Dragon coming out of the wall for the kids to see.

Really superb views across Lincoln from the walls. The Victorian prison is also very interesting.
You get a 10% discount if you’re a member of English heritage
J. L.
Lovely grounds and would be perfect for a picnic on a sunny day. Sadly due to the COVID restrictions we didn't get to see the walls or inside - huge queue for the wall and all tickets sold for inside. Best to book ahead!
S. S.
I have used Lincoln Castle's grounds as a refuge over lockdown working while on my lunches as a space to sit and admire the surroundings.
A much needed a welcome environment to enjoy while chaos and uncertainty surrounds us.
M. D.
Feels like stepping back in time, around the castle, cathedral and up Steep Hill. Lovely old buildings, quaint shops and many eateries.
C. J.
Spent nearly four hours here so much history to take in, a guided tour in the entry price .which includes the grounds the prison ,the castle wall walk then a nice cafe and toilets and so many photo opportunities, with the fantastic views
T.
Whether passing through or walking the wall this place really gives you a feeling of the history passed. The grounds are well kept and lovely to walk through on a sunny day. Prison, hangings and battles, oh my... I highly recommend visiting if you never have.
K. F.
We joined the guided tour of grounds which was great for extra detail. Prison and document fault well worth exploring as well
p. s.
Very nice outdoor space. Free except for the wall walk ,which was £10 each!
A. A.
Expensive visit for a family of four, if you've the English Heritage Membership you only save 10%. The Sat nav doesn't take you really there but close-by. There's a close car park but you won't find it, unless you know it. Overall a good day out...
S. M.
we had a good day out and enjoyed our visit, i was not sure about parking so just picked one at random near the castle, it was at the bottom of a steep hill so probably better to do your homework first, recommend the walk around the wall its quite high and great views, plenty to look at when your there and the usual gift shop and cafe, near the cathedral so worth while visiting both while your there.
G. G.
Great day out. The castle grounds are free, & the 4 year old was quite happy, just rolling down the grassy hill, we had to drag he to the Lego play area. He ran from one area to another, and again we had to drag he away from the duplicate play area. He would still be there now if we let him. We walked the perimeter castle wall, and went up Lucy tower. The little man, ran most of it, he was very excitabubble. We took a small picnic. Well worth stocking up with drinks, & snacks, if you want to save some money. We stopped off @ the bakery "Starbucks", (not the USA franchise), a lovely local family bakery right beside the Coop in Burton road. There are other bakery's, ice cream shops, restaurants, all within a short walk from castle. The castle does have a cafe, which was very pleasant, but we thought it was a bit pricy, especially the juices.
All in all a very good day out, & the children will love just running around the grounds (great for picnics), & won't cost you a penny.
N. H.
Great attraction, plenty of history and things to do, views are great from one of the towers but for some reason they've block the views from the south wall (1st pic). Not sure why, I'm 6ft and could only see over on tip toes. Otherwise high recommended
S. T.
Extremely interesting place. I re-learned about the Magna Carta and had insights into the life of a Victorian chimney sweep and prison inmates & guards. Great for the kids and some fantastic views across Lincoln when walking the wall.
d. d. (.
It's a very impressive building, the architecture is amazing and a must see. The town is beautiful too, I only gave 4 stars because the charge to see inside of the cathedral and the castle was £30 per adult, I understand the upkeep of this beautiful building must run into thousands, but more people would pay if it wasn't quite so steep.
A. G.
A day well spent in this place! A nice a different castle! You need to buy a ticket to get access to the walls of the castle which surround it where you can see a large area of Lincoln and the cathedral!
One of the important castles built by William the conqueror,,
Highly recommended!
There are various car parks around the castle,,
M. H.
Great day but the tickets to get into the castle were expensive just to see the steampunk. Couldn't find the asylum organisers and had to pay full entry fee....still it was great fun.
A. S.
My wife and I visited today, it was so interesting that we didn't leave enough time to visit the cathedral, which was our plan.
We purchased a 'day pass ' each which included a guided tour, which was very good. Paul Scott was our tour guide, just wanted to give him a special mention as it was so interesting. Thanks to all the staff, job well done 👏
P. H.
After STEEP HILL well worth the visit enjoy the views and history of LINCOLN'S iconic Castle
P.
Great afternoon exploring Lincoln castle in the fog,the prison building was great and the cinema explaining the Magna carter was excellent, all the staff where very helpful
A. M.
Lincoln Castle is an amazing place to visit. Walk the walls, see the old Prison and Courthouse and see an actual copy if great Magna Carta. Superb day out.
D. W.
Love Lincoln Castle. Really well decorated for Christmas and worth a visit.
P. B.
Great bit of history held here! Nice grounds! Magma carta and the views are cool! Book online before and save yourself something for the cafe or gift shop!
V. G.
Lincoln Christmas market fantastic in the castle grounds and around the cathedral. No nativity sets to be found for sale in the market . Lovely one set up in the cathedral.
K. S.
Loved exploring the castle. Wall walk is beautiful as you can see the town and the castle buildings. There is a lift or stairs to reach the walk way. Not a difficult walk at all. It took as 40 minutes with lots of stops to look around and get the information. Prision musuem was also interesting, it had actors playing prisioner parts as it is half-term. Highlight was the free tour and the volunteers. They know a lot of information and the castle history while being friendly and helpful.
J. H.
Went along to see the steampunk event and the Lego sculptures hidden around the castle. A great location with medieval and Victorian history. An easy walk from the train station for anyone using public transport. All in all a nice day out.
M. T.
We did a guided tour which lasted an hour and outlined some important history of the castle. The castle whilst interesting, does not boast it's history or importance to the history of Britain as well as it could. I would have enjoyed a few more exhibits in all honesty.
I would like to go back and view the castle at my own leisure without my kids, as I was unable to move at a more leisurely pace in order to keep them entertained.
C. M.
A superb visit. Do go for a day ticket and guided tour. Our guide Jeff was brilliant and so interesting and informative 🙂👍
G. J.
Well worth a visit . The whole place is very well kept. Liked the videos in the cells and the film in the cinema worth a look. Could elaborate on the whole experience maybe without being 'theme park(ish) ' by adding more sounds and smells if poss. Impressed by how well kept it is.
J. J.
Lovely afternoon going back in time.
Fab view from the castle ramparts walk round.
M. D.
Great day out spent over 5 hours visiting the free guided tour by Russ Russell was very good and informative.
L. R.
Took my eight year-old grandson. Always interesting there but even better through his eyes. The Dragon Trail and Lucy the Dragon were fun. The Medieval Wall Walk was s blast.
Great value!
J. F.
First you have to choose where to park? and we decided to park on a side road 20 mins away as most car parks would be around 6 pounds for 4 hours and we didn't want to Rush our Visit. We first viewed the Cathedral's Beauty and had a look about around this area, then we did the Castle Wall Walk, was not dissatisfied with this but we did choose the day the Students were graduating so there were Marquees and tents all over the grounds which spoiled Photography. It's obviously full of history and listening points on the walk that give you lots of information. We then toured around the rest of the Area and there are lots of narrow hilly cobbled streets and old quaint architecture buildings to view I would recommend good comfortable footwear and lots of water on a warm day!
C. A.
Very interesting and enjoyable with many different things to fill a afternoon. Must not miss Lucy the breathing smoking dragon the children and adults will love her a lovely visit .
K. S.
Very interesting and made for a full day out. Really good guided tour. We certainly got our money's worth!
T. F.
What beautiful grounds and stunning ramparts. We went there for a Steampunk extravaganza and we weren't disappointed, the refreshments are fresh, the grass is soft and the people we shared this day with were splendid.
Z. M.
Lovely day out whether they have a special event or not. Kids always enjoy looking around the victorian prison and walking the castle walls. Plus amazing view of the water Tower and cathedral.
M. P.
Thoroughly enjoyable, a brief look at the Magna Carta, a visit to the prison, and best bit a walk around the walls with great views over Lincoln.
Perhaps a little expensive for admission, but on a sunny day like today, in was worth it for the walls!
R. F.
Absolutely beautiful castle. Amazing how well preserved it is. Well worth a visit.
A. E.
Great historical experience for fans of all eras. With the chance to see the magna carta, a genuine victorian prison and great architecture from a stunning view, this really does have something for everyone. However, I would advise against trips up the flag tower for anyone with claustrophobia as the stairs are very crowded (especially on busy days). Loved it overall. Would visit again.
N. E.
Went to open air cinema great idea weather let it down a little but still enjoyed the show 😀
D. R. (.
Great place to visit. Free to enter the grounds and do the wall walk which I heard was the longest in Europe. (One way and spaced for social distancing etc). Paid forMfor carta exhibit and prison tour which was very interesting with videos, displays and plenty of information. Recommended.
E. G. M. d. h.
it was a good experience for our son .And we had a lot of fun 👍
A. Ż.
Such a nice place and people. You can spend all day just outside. There is very nice coffee shop with great cakes and variety of teas. Love this place a lot
J. S.
Visited for the first time on a weekend & what a fabulous place. All staffs friendliness & professionalism in there jobs was to be admired. Will definitely visit again.
A. F.
Best money I ever spent. The roof tour is worth way more than £4, and the library is amazing. Friendly staff, I'll be back!
R. R.
There is a grass area that is accessible to anyone without paying. Castle walk and ruins are interesting to explore. The magna carta and prisons are located as you go in the cafe entrance, the location it's not displayed clearly outside so it took a while to fine. But once found very interesting and informative. Highly recommended.
R. B.
Absolutely loved this place was so interesting to see how every generation had repurposed the castle, some in not such a savory way. Staff so knowledgeable and friendly, definitely a good family morning out
C.
Absolutely lovely.
Spent ages just walking around the castle wall alone. Worth listening to the audio section too which tells you little facts about the area of the wall you're stood at.
One thing I would suggest is that they gave some sort of discount during Covid because there were less available things than there usually are. Such as:
• There didn't seem to be many staff members about and considering how large the grounds were it would have been nice to know where to go and what to do - everybody was having the same problems of "Can we go in this bit? Where do we go?" Perhaps some better signs or two more staff members dotted around.
• In the prison they usually have outfits to try on and activities to have a go of that the prisoners would have participated in, but because of Covid that wasn't possible. Perhaps it would have been nice if they could have put them on display still, on mannequins for example.
• There was part of the castle tour that was closed off (because it was too enclosed flaming Covid).
I understand all these things can't be helped, however all these small things add up and to pay full price and not get the full experience seems a little unfair. The things I suggested or even a free hotdog or cuppa would've swayed my opinion for the extra star.
Overall I would recommend it still as it was beautiful and interesting just wait until after it opens properly :-)
M. L.
Attended the Lincolnshire Vintage Vehicle Society's (L.V.V.S) "Castle Rally", the first one after the Pandemics enforced break. A great event with approximately 200 vehicles (cars, military & light commercial). This unique venue offers not only an event area, but is also steeped in Lincoln's vast time line of history. A great day out for all the family.
K. P.
Wonderful historical place. Friendly staff available full of information and facts. Lots to see. Audio guide a must. Had a very enjoyable time.
C. E.
Glorious views . Lovely grounds . I would recommend this .
M. P.
AMAZING CHRISTMAS SCENE!
Just had a walk through the Castle grounds and was stunned by how minimal and yet striking the decorations are. Please if you have the chance take a walk through after sunset and you won't be disappointed.
R. S.
Excellent day out , we spent five enjoyable hours there. Good value for money if you take the time to see it all and take in the guided tour.
W. H.
Lincoln is one of the classic cities that should be visited. We were lucky to have the sunny weather on this visit, the place oozes character and history. Take the open bus tour, go into the main venues and soak up as much as possible. You'll need to be fit as it's hillier than most think. The Norman's chose the site for its views over the surrounding land. As did the Romans.
T. C.
Fabulous and interesting visit. Really enjoyed. Don't skip the walls walk, fantastic views to orientate yourself for the day
A. E.
Brilliant place 2 visit. Really cheap had a lovely morning
G. W.
Now you can walk all the way around the wall. Some great views and interesting history. The included audio guide has extra information and works well.
It's not the cheapest attraction in town but the staff are friendly and helpful, the quality of work is high, and the history interesting.
You can even buy a full suit of armour.
M.
So much history and to get a tour by Ken Moore was brilliant with all his witty comments and knowledge of history a good day out and nice to walk around Lincoln
P. O. L.
The Castle gas lots of history and good views of the surrounding area. The walk around the walls and up the tower allows you to see a long way.
Within the grounds is a Victorian prison that you can walk around. You can see the cells and the chapel where prisoners were kept segregated.
There is the original Magna Carta to see. You can pay three sets of entrance fee including just the grounds, grounds and prison and prison, grounds and walls. There is also a combination ticket with the Cathedral.
K. M. W.
Beautiful as always
Great place to visit lots to do
N. B.
Absolutely loved spending a morning here. Really great facilities, amazing grounds giving the kids space to burn off energy and occupy themselves
V. T.
Always an amazing day out
The dragon it was the new feature.
The guide Jen was very knowledgeable.
We will go again.
M. H.
While I didn't look around the castle it was free to enter and visit the shop. The staff were very good and helpful.
Big open space inside castle grounds. I am sure this gets used during events? But such a big wasted space could be put to good use for entertainment purposes or buitque shops all year round etc.
s. h.
The castle is a great place to go it had the imps there today which was very good.
R. D.
Variety of interesting experiences here: wall walk, Victorian Prison, guided walk. The latter led by Paul Scott was really interesting and took us round the castle explaining many of its varied aspects and periods to us.
S. M.
Visited on 12th.May.Weather was good so walked full castle walk(audio description as you walk around).Very informant on history.Inside castle walls are victorian prison and working Crown Court(strange to see prison staff arriving with prisoners).Cafe is very good and affordable. So overall an enjoyable visit, but not comparable to somewhere like Warwick castle.
D. F.
Beautiful castle at the top of Lincoln. It cost about £10 for an adult to go on the walkway and the views are breathtaking on a clear day. It's a hard walk up Steep Hill if you are coming from the bottom of town by foot and the spiral staircase to the very top of the castle is a little tricky if you are not fit and able. We went with two children under 5 and they enjoyed it.
K. P.
Brilliant place to bring the kids to sight see we come here regular
G. A.
Very pleasant visit, great view, reasonable ticket prices, good live entertainment and history-related events. Fun place for kids.
C. G.
Interesting castle with intact walls so it's possible to walk all round and get great view of cathedral and the city below. There are quite a few steps as you walk round so not suitable for wheelchair or people with mobility problems..but there is a lift so you can get up just not very far round. It would be nice if there was a plaque that told you what buildings can be seen in city at various points around the walls.
Tea room reasonably priced and flapjack was delicious.
Prison interesting though confusing as to way round, not sure we didn't miss some of it. Magna carta vault was ok though it clearly said no photographs the member of staff on duty didn't stop people doing so. The film show was missing a panel so in effect we only saw 75% of the screen, the very middle panel showed everything double which was slightly disconcerting.
All in all a good afternoon out. Bit too much lego for an adult but kids there seemed to be having fun.
I. P.
Amazing value for money, very helpful and welcoming staff. Very COVID secure from helping and signposting to booking on line before entry (into timed slots) or controlling the one way flow around the ramparts. Great one way system inside too. Felt very safe and relaxed and able to enjoy everything.
Great audio visual elements around the quite fascinating prison. Well maintained grounds, lots of things to read of interest, signage and plaques.
The price paid on line (12.60) was less than stated on the gate and compared to the stated admission price for the nearby Cathedral (£8) (which put us off) was far better value for money. Spent a good two hours in the Castle and saw and did everything. Well worth the walk up and down Steep Hill. Thanks for a great experience.
C. B.
Well worth the visit. The prison, the Magna Carter and the Wall walk were all enjoyable. The information provided by one of the attendants on the Magna Carta was well worth listening too putting into context the document as written, it's influence on the history of our laws upto the present day.
J. C.
Amazing grounds, shop and cafe. Lovely to walk through and watch the sunset as the days shorten. Plenty of historic plaques for information.
P. D.
Visited during the Jubilee celebrations and brought our picnic. Disappointed that everything was so expensive. Surely for this special occasion walking around the wall would have been free.
d. d.
Didn't actually go inside the castle was on the grounds for the Christmas Market..but it was lovely to see bits of the outside and the rampant and wall and the grounds..definitely worth a visit..
J. B.
Good place to go on a day out with a wide variety of things to look at and you can walk round the whole wall. Nice cafe as well.
A. R.
Beautiful scenery highly recommend having a walk round. If you have some decent weather lovely to sit on the grass and have lunch and watch the world go by.
N. H.
Very interesting place, definitely recommend the guided tour. Our tour guide was Malcolm and he was so passionate and knowledgeable.
R. C.
Loads to see and do, its free entry into the grounds, you only pay if you want to go and visit the prison, Magna Carta or walk the walls which are all definitely worth a visit.
K. M. R.
Once you have managed to walk up the steep hill. It is definitely worth the money to take a trip around the castle. We paid to walk around the wall as well as visit the prison. Even though it was raining and was windy it did not spoil the views that could be seen or the atmosphere. We visited on a day when added activities were going on both in the court yard which was interesting to watch and take part. We took walk into the magna carta section which was interesting and was worth the visit after reading about it as a child. The prison as to be a must. Such a hard life was had by all both prisoners and officers. A really good day out will be going again next time we go
P. L.
Really enjoyed us castle visit. The weather was not great for the wall walk. But the audio commentary was helpful. Just wished they had got all of the numbered audio numbers on show. The prison tour was very good.
Get thee sen down tha waint be disappointed. We bought a combined cathedral n castle ticket. Should not have to pay to enter a house of God.
A. S.
Amazing history and views! With the ticket you can visit 2nd time the castle. One of the original Magna Charta been there! Also good experience to kids as well.
A. C.
Nice place to visit. It was a festival , people was dressed up very nice also live music.Pleanty places to eat or drink.Don't hesitate to go an visit this castle.
V. V.
Excellent to spend family time in the garden grounds albeit weather is good. And do the wall walk, it is good.
A. E.
Attended a music concert on a Friday evening.
Excellent acoustics and well organised event.
Need more toilets though.
B. N.
Lincoln Castle walls walk is magnificent. Great experience not just for kids but for adults as well. Ability to get guided tours. All priced on a little high but student, senior and kids discounts are available and it is a heritage site so all worth it. Views of Lincoln from castle walls are astonishing. Parking is close by. Castle grounds are accessible for wheelchair users. There is a good selection of nice pubs, cafés, little bistros and other places with food and drink close to the castle grounds. Good day out no matter what weather. We definitely will be going back there as we all enjoyed our visit.
T. C.
Fantastic! The grounds are spectacular and the victorian prison is brilliant and really interesting. Lots of exciting learning activities to do for children and adults. The Magna Carta was fascinating. The walk around the walls with the audio narration was really interesting . A most enjoyable morning for all.
K. 1.
Lincoln Castle is a major Norman castle constructed in Lincoln, England during the late 11th century by William the Conqueror on the site of a pre-existing Roman fortress. The castle is unusual in that it has two mottes. It is one of only two such castles in the country, the other being at Lewes in East Sussex. Lincoln Castle remained in use as a prison and law court into modern times, and is one of the better preserved castles in England; the Crown Courts continue to this day. It is open to the public most days of the week, and possible to walk around the walls from which there are views of the castle complex, cathedral, the city, and surrounding countryside.
R. P.
The second main attraction after the Cathedral (in my opinion). The garden is beautiful such the walk on the walls. It contains a small archeological exposition and a story about life in prison in the previous centuries. The Magna Carta chamber is amazing with a really detailed video about British history.
A. M.
One of the most amazing experiences I have had. Staff went above and beyond for me and were so friendly. If anyone seeing this has not walked around the Castle Wall, I highly recommend it.
T. W.
Perfect to visit on a sunny day. It was interesting seeing the prison and the magna carta, and I loved the walk on the castle wall.
G. A.
Treasure worth a visit. Grounds are free to enter. Charge to look round inside and the wall walk
T. N. p.
Went here for the Steampunk Festival 2017 and entry to the Victorian prison was included but I would have come just to see this it was really informative and well maintained also having a exhibition centre displaying the doomsday book (tempary exhibit) We also walked the top of the walls for great views of Lincolnshire. Very enjoyable.
k. d.
Enjoyed walking the castle wall and listening to the history on the radios provided.
The jail was fascinating and showed just how the prisoners lived in the cells. The Magna carta is usually held here but unfortunately wasn't at the time we visited.
J. A.
Nice castle. Lovely walk around the walls. Plenty of green space to chill
Y. M.
Great view over Lincoln from the walk around the wall.
Prison good place to see, very informative staff.
Grounds are now used as the crown court for Lincoln.
A. B.
If you want to have an extraordinary experience, come to Lincoln castle the last weekend in August - bank holiday and also famous Steampunk Asylum. Spectacular atmosphere you will remember for years and it may even persuade you to come back next year in a costume! 🎩
A. R.
What a fantastic day out! All staff very helpful and informative. A rucksack was left behind at one point and the staff were brilliant in locating and returning it to us! Thank you. There is a cafe providing a range of food and drinks. All disability friendly though there are sections where disability access is impossible especially on the walls which is understandable. Plenty of activities and dressing up for kids, Stunning views of Lincoln and great value for money day out! Would definitely recommend. We didn't get to see the magna Carta so will be returning in the future
D. K.
Watched the England ladies team beat Germany in the euro final, picknick social was on so plenty of beer and food stalls from local food producers
C. J.
An iconic Norman castle in the city of Lincoln. Stand at the top of the stupido next to the beautiful Lincoln Cathedral and was built by William the Conqueror. Of note one of the original Magna Carta documents is held here.
J. M.
Brilliant grand English castle with stunning wall-top views of the cathedral. It also houses Magna Carta and an Victorian Prison. The castle and cathedral are a must see in Lincoln.
P. V.
Only did the wall walk but thoroughly enjoyed it the audio talk was well put together and left me guessing who was narrating it sounded like Jeremy irons but who knows?
A. A.
Never paid to go fully in but if you go on a sunny day it's a great place to go and have a picnic.. a huge long steep hill to climb to get to the castle
G. M.
Great Day out at Lincoln Castle Picnic Social, brilliant atmosphere with lots of food and drink stalls and Lucy the dragon 🐉
S. s.
Enjoyable family outing. The prison tours were entertaining and educational. Was a very wet day so we couldn't walk the castle wall and grounds
P. M.
Lincoln Castle is an early example of a Norman motte and bailey castle which has been put to other uses. Dominating early trade routes in Lincolnshire, it was built by the Normans to control the area.
The castle sits on a hilltop overlooking Lincoln, the views are unexceptional in my opinion now but would have been much better before Lincoln expanded. The wall is intact and you can walk the whole circuit included in the cost of admittance to the castle. (Joint Castle and Cathedrial admittance is available netting a 20% discount).
The centre of the castle is the site of a Georgian Prison which is now a prison and archeology museum and the site of the Magna Carta exhibition. The prison exibit shows the men's and women's wings of the prison as well as the prisoners chapel. Most cells are empty, though some have activities, interactive exibits and dress up for the kids. I thought there could have been more done here, as I ended up walking along hallways glancing into cells before moving on.
The Magna Carta exhibit has a copy of the forest charter and a version of the Magna Carta but photography is strictly forbidden. This exibit is small with a copy of each charter in a glass case along with a case with a random suit of armour.
All in all, if you like castles, it's worth a look, but there are much better ones out there.
A. G.
Expensive tickets. Wall walk well worth it. Combined ticket £16 for all Lincoln Castle attractions, plus Cathedral entry.
D. J.
Well worth a visit, tour guide Ken was fab very knowledgeable. Loads to see. Great day out.
A. M.
Lincoln castle is amazing. Stunning views from the walk bridge and tower. The prison building is just awesome link stories to why each person was sent to prison
K. (.
A walk around the ramparts is a must when visiting the castle, the scenery of Lincoln and views of the cathedral are simply breathtaking. It's quite a trek, lots of steps, sometimes feels quite unsteady (but definitely safe) - so not really suitable for young children or those that can't walk very well. The prison is well preserved and fun to walk around, very informative and lots of information displayed - and the Magna Carta is on display for a big chunk of the year which is worth looking at too. The staff that are in the vault that houses it are very friendly and knowledgeable! A must for any visitor to Lincoln - but if you're going on foot, the walk up to the castle and cathedral is *very* steep. There's a shuttle bus that has a small cost that will take you up there.
H. T.
A beautiful and interesting visit. It was somewhat spoilt by a food festival which had loud music and tents everywhere, hence only 3 stars
S. W.
Lovely walk along the walks gives you amazing views of Lincoln and the prison and Magna Carta were fascinating
I. A. P.
Was at Lincoln for court but the castle was beautiful, the grounds were well maintained and the views were stunning.
N.
The wall walk offers some lovely views and placards provide a concise history lesson for kids and adults to enjoy alike.
N. H.
Lovely views, quite a drafty walk though...not good if you don't like heights.
s. s.
Kids loved it. Lego items were impressive. Wall walk offers good views of Lincoln centre. We aleays return on a Lincoln visit. Nice food but slow arrival and not hot.
m. p.
Lovely place
Great value for money
Loads to see
Guided tour was superb, thanks Heather 😊
D. C.
I regularly go with my boy.. we have an annual pass which was not much more than a daily charge. Great when they have events on. Great on a sunny day to just have a pick nick or ice cream. My boy is fascinated with the prison and the cells.
C. F.
We came for the Alice and Wonderland/Easter trail and had a wonderful time playing around the castle grounds.
D. P.
Excellent day out at a reasonable price. Also had a load of food trucks there which provided a tasty lunch
W. L.
The prison it's self is worth the entry fee of £13 per adult
J. W.
Lovely walk along the walls, can buy a joint ticket with Cathedral. A nice day out.
Ş. P.
Very interesting Norman castle, with about 900 years of history within its walls. One of the main attractions in Lincoln and the keeper of a copy of Magna Carta.
I highly recommend the tour guide, Andrew did a great job explaining the history of the castle and how it held a key point in UK history.
C.
Fun and educational day out for youngsters. Immaculate and relaxing grounds. Amazing views from the wall walk. Staff extremely helpful and friendly.
j. p.
Amazing castle with lots to see
There fir steampunk festival each August bank hoilday
S. M.
An amazing castle 🏰 To see more photos please visit my Instagram page @scottstravelphotos

A free open space until you wish to climb the walls or enter the building, made more special in Great weather and with free entertainment for the Royal wedding!
R. G.
Loved walking around the wall and seeing inside the prison very educational. My daughter loved it as well there are lots of activities to do!!
V. S.
Lovely to be able to walk atop the castle wall. Very breezy today though.
Grandson loves visiting.
M. j.
If you like your history. You'll love the ways you can learn about Lincoln's at the castle
F. 0.
Unique and amazing historic tour. It was awesome to see the magna carter and learn more about the history. Lovely views from atop the tower. Can see the cathedral from up high. Great place for those who enjoy learning history, seeing and experiencing historic sites and museums.
S. A.
Beautiful place to visit. Great for history and lovely backdrop for photography
J. B.
We went on a Monday. No magna carta there at moment but plenty of other things to view they have a cafe. It's a very steep climb upto the castle and cathedral so take care.
C. R.
It's a good place but this time we went to see Lucy the dragon we had to pay to enter which is unusual as been before and never had to pay
B. B.
If history is thing for you the Castle is the great cathedral of Lincoln is amazing then there are the Roman ruins
C. K.
I love Lincoln castle. Sat proudly atop the Lincoln ridge and visible for miles, it really is something special. A walk around the interior is free I believe, but you have to pay some money to walk around the battlements. This is definitely worth doing, as the views out across Lincolnshire and back towards cathedral are superb.

Absolutely fantastic castle. Loved the fact the Steam Punk Market was there which was an added bonus....the Victorian Prision was amazing...Loved the Medieval walk way ...would had 5 stars if not for the observatory tower in my opinion should of been supervised too restrict the amount off people up the top...felt uneasy and pressured too come down from the top of the tower because of the amount off people at the top at once ...but other than that brilliant day for the whole family

First visit ever and what a lovely picturesque historic city. Beautiful! Stunning! Steep Hill is (very steep) steep! Great shops in olde part! Castle very interesting. Will have to return to see more of Lincoln and its history.

It was ok but not fantastic, I love visiting castles and this was a bit nothingness, the prison was interesting

Brilliant. Our grandkids loved it. Up a VERY steep hill from Lincoln Centre. However, you can get a bus from the bus station !!

Took little one to look at Castle for the first time. Shame the charge to walk the wall was more than we could justify, especially in these cost conscious times. Wondering if charge was less, would more people be able to access? Lovely and clean. Always a favourite.

Amazing views of the historic town of Lincoln if you like a little taste of British history then this is a great place

It is was interesting informative and fun

Like the town it is in there is alot of history attached to this castle. Well worth a visit and if you like you can view the magna carta inside too, covid restrictions permitting

We had a great time and the Christmas decorations at the Lincoln Castle were breath taking. We've been really impressed with all the decor and carol singing.
The entry tickets costs us only £2 each and although we haven't booked online we were able to purchase them from the gate store.
Our little one was amazed with the lighting trees and walls.
Overall, we definitely recommend to families with children and adults who looks for some historical places/entertainment at same time.

Not quite what I expected as it's a mote & bailey castle not like your stereotypical castle but plenty to see/learn about with the prison and magna carta plus a really scenic wall walk as well.

Absolutely amazing, we loved the guided tour hosted by Martin, I would strongly recommend before walking around the castle grounds. Martin's talk brought to life the history of not only Lincoln Castle and area around Lincold but also how it fit into Britain and Europe. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit, please do not miss the guided tours!

Love the castle and highly recommend seeing the prison cells, also the walk on the walls are brilliant . Also go and see one of 4 original copies of the Magna Carta

Had a great guided tour of the place which is highly recommended to get a feeling of thousands story associated with this very special historic place

What a wonderful Castle. Due to the Coronavirus I was unable to do anything other than walk the ramparts. Great views and so peaceful at this time

Here for Steampunk, it is the perfect venue, lots to see and do here and beyond in uphill Lincoln.

An absolute must to visit! The audio guide of the walls is superb, fantastic commentary with blood curdling sound effects. The Victorian prison really made us stop and think about how horrific being incarcerated there must have been, the staff were very restricted too. We were thrilled to see the Magna Carta. Wonderful views of the cathedral. Highly recommended!

Lovely open area within Castle walls.
Free entry to the grounds

Thoroughly enjoyed the castle experience, shame the Magna Carta was away for R&R but didn't dim the experience too much!
The wall walk was tremendous, we were very, very lucky with the weather for the end of January too, beautiful sunshine (but VERY windy up there!)
Highly recommended, but make sure you have comfy shoes!

Lincoln Castle is a lovely place for locals and tourists alike especially on a sunny day. Plenty of interest indoors and outside. Well worth a visit. Take a picnic or use the cafe.

Beautiful place, can't wait to come back again with our son. Could easily spend a day in the grounds with a picnic. Definitely worth a visit.

Great day out. Plenty of space for kids to run around and explore without paying for the magna carta or wall walk. Great access to the shops if your legs are good for the walk back up steep hill.

Fabulous place great history well tools and friendly staff

Picnic social was fantastic. More food truck based events please!

Lots to see and do. Something for all the family. Interactive modern tech to old robes and games to play.

This is the Lincoln Castle where a long bridge walk to go around the castle is a must 'do' in the city. You can see the whole city and its beauty.

A very interesting place that has a great atmosphere. It is free to enter as it is a thoroughfare, although for a fee you can enter the Victorian prison which is very interesting and get to walk around the castle walls.

Great day out and price wise it is so reasonable. Would recommend this place to anyone.

Lincoln Castle is a must if you are in the city. We live here but a week ago we took another tour round the walls during the Lincoln Christmas Market. It gave a brilliant view of everything going on below.

We had a great day at the castle, the staff were amazingly friendly and helpful and went the extra mile to accommodate the tour. It would have been nice to have seen other things going on in the grounds like reenactments for example, especially for the considerable ticket prices. Overall, I'd definitely and will visit again. Thank you 😊

Wonderful place with beautiful gardens and regular events for the public.
S. C.
Well worth the visit, staff friendly and very knowledgeable about the castle.

Great place very interesting and lots of quaint shops

Visited for the first time in a long time, and found it to be a lovely place. It's a beautiful old building in a pleasant location. Attended a concert there, and the sound near the outer walls wasn't the best, lower down was much better, but that's not a reflection on the castle!
C. W.
Food festival and comedy event at the castle. There were a lot of food stalls and entertainment on the band stand and also other shows that you had to pay extra for. We saw horrible histories which was very good. Disappointed we could not bring in our own picnic and enjoy the sunshine and entertainment so we took that elsewhere
N. B.
Very very good and interesting. The location audio handset was a must. A shame the exact points weren't marked better. You will need to allow 3 hours for this battlements tour. Well worth it. Make sure you go down the tiny steps and up into the high tower. Superb views over the city.
