Reviews of National Trust - Tattershall Castle
S. B.
We visited Tattershall Castle with two of our grandchildren. It was a flying visit as we had booked to visit the Petwood Hotel for afternoon tea. That said we had time to visit the church next door that was very nice and under some restoration work. From there we walked the short distance to the National Trust reception for the Castle. The team were very helpful and gave us useful information for the visit. We had time to climb the 149 steps to the castle roof. Although you need to be vigilant with young children climbing the stairs, they are actually quite wide and there are many windows, so well lit as well. We arrived on the roof for spectacular views in every direction, stunning.
We descended back down and walked around the rooms at the bottom. There are floors to peruse, but as said we were a bit pushed for time.
Stopped back off in reception as our eagle eyed grandchildren had seen the second hand books for sale. We bought them one each and one for myself. With that we left for our onward journey.
The castle has a lovely location and well worth a visit. We are national Trust members, so would certainly recommend to visit if you're in the area.

A beautiful and unique castle with some old history. The tower/castle is quite tall and interesting, you can climb at the very top of it. At the very top the feeling and the view is astonishing... additionally you can descend in the castle cellars as well it's not so big to explore, but still interesting to visit. This place have a small tradition with the wedding's stuff. So you can often see some bride's and etc taking photos of themselves to remember. The price for the adults tickets is 8 pounds, for kids i think 4 pounds each. But prices are quite fair i Guess. It's a nice place to spend time with your kids and families. My verdict - 7.5/10.

Amazing place to visit. Stunning views from top if the castle. Each floor has condensed historical information which is ideal for an insight into the castles past. Small shop selling cold drinks and ice cream. Toilets. Picnic area to eat own food. Really enjoyable place to visit.
J. H.
Visited yesterday for the 1st time with my family including 2 small children and my elderly nan. All really enjoyed seeing the castle and learning some of its history. My only disappointments were the complete lack of cafe and gift shop which we usually enjoy at a national trust place. Overall a nice short trip out! (Wear comfy shoes there's a lot of stairs!)
L. W.
A really well preserved castle keep and if you are in the area I would recommend a visit.
You can climb right to the top which gives some very good views of Lincolnshire and there are a few information boards dotted around with information on about the history of the castle.
Presently no guide book as it is being re-written which was a shame as I personally would have liked some more information to read.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight visitor centre is also very close so a day can be made in the area.

Lovely place to visit, with fantastic views of the Lincolnshire countryside from the top. The car park is a 5 minute short walk along a gravel path, past a lovely church (which is also nice to look around). Toilets are situated just outside the site so are available without paying to enter. The house itself has a few pieces of interest, but is mostly empty. The cellar and upper floors are not accessible to wheelchair users. There is a long climb up the spiral staircase to the top, but there are 3 floors to stop at on the way up of you wish to look around and catch your breath. Views from the top are stunning and the surrounding garden are also a great place to have a picnic on a sunny day, with a few benches dotted around. The shop is fairly small but does have snacks and cold drinks available. No other food or drink is available on site. Well worth a trip if you're in the area.
D. C.
Lovely day out, quick top while in the local area. The church is also stunning, take a moment to go inside and look up. The graveyard is also worth a look, quite a few headstones from 1880s. Made my way up to the top of the tower for some sunning views.
S. P.
Superb historical building with lots of history.
Stuff helpful together with outstanding knowledge.
Also really informative visual aids.
However the props were a little skimpy.
To add to the fun a Lancaster bomber circled overhead.
Really enjoyed it would recommend a visit.

Beautiful place, but costs 8 pounds to even get close to see it. Most places, it not all in Europe, you can walk around the outside of a historical place & have to pay to go inside...this one, you have to pay just to get near it; drove two hours from a place in England, and it was closing within 30 minutes...so, they wouldn't sell tickets. Still, a pretty place
J. P.
A great visit during the beginning of the summer holidays. We've driven past on so many occasions but decided to make a visit on the recommendation of family. As National Trust members, we just had to show our cards to enter. The castle was great to look around with plenty of information available to anyone wanting to learn more. The view from the top was worth the climb up the staircase. You can see for miles, with key locations visible such as Lincoln Castle and Boston "Stump"
Would definitely visit again!
R. F.
There doesn't appear to be much inside to view or investigate from the outside. In actuality, we were inside for at least 40 minutes. Be prepared with comfortable shoes because the floor is uneven and there are 149 steps to the top. It was worth the trip and effort. The view was spectacular and breath taking. There is no tea house but there is a lovely church Cafe few yards away which I highly recommend.
P. W.
Brilliant halfterm fun here this week. We travelled from Newark to see the castle, and it was well worth the drive. Each room was decorated with spiders, webs and pumpkins. The pumpkin trail was brilliant, £2 of great fun. My 10 yr old grandson thoroughly enjoyed, the castle, the trail and our picnic outside. The little prize once the trail is completed must equal the £2 paid, a bookmark and a crayon set. Ample parking, toilets just before entering the castle grounds. No cafe, although soft drinks and snacks can be bought at the reception/shop entrance. Great place to while away a couple of hours.
K. B.
Glorious day. Entrance through small shop in which you can buy refreshments but we were lucky the Holy Trinity Church was open for tea and cake next door - only £2.50 and fruit cake recommended. Climbed to the top of the castle where there are superb views of surrounding countryside and RAF Coningsby. Car park has a small gate through which you can walk to the Weir and along The Bain river.
L. R.
I adore this place. I love its location. You can't go wrong. The church is very sweet and interesting too. Lots and lots and lots of spiral steps! Ample car parking. Interesting, inviting chambers, garderobes, fireplaces and wonderful views. NB. No tea shop!
K. A.
Great place to enjoy a bit of a history. You can go all the way up in the tower and view from top is breathtaking. Stairs are not as scary as in some other historic castles. They gave small car park, but plenty of space. Kids loved exploring the castle.
J. B.
Free car park, NT usually charge, staff were polite and the grounds were well kept. Knocked a star off because as you walk round the grounds, there's nothing to explain what you are looking at. Nice place for a couple of hours.
C. S.
Great little castle with story boards on each level to describe what happened there. Very polite helpful staff to assist your visit. Car parking available
D. R.
A Grand historic building, with plenty of places for a potential game of hide & seek. Beautiful views from the roof. A good few hours to keep the kids occupied.
K. P.
Loved it.. Went with a few friends in our 30s for a random stop off on the way home.
So excited to go to the top of the castle! Wouldn't bring children under 5 as there's lots of steep steps to go up.
D. L.
What a wonderful place this is! Granted its not the biggest castle, nor does it have the biggest grounds to explore, but what is here is very very good! The castle itself is a joy to behold, magnificent in its presence and for its age still looking great. Lovely views from the top, you can even just see Lincoln cathedral on a clear day. The grounds are very well maintained and there is plenty of space for a picnic. Nowhere to grab a drink or something to eat though, so bring some sarnies and relax with a great view while you have some lunch.
If you're a National Trust member then you can enter for free 👍 Car parking is also free so you have no reason to not visit.
S. B.
It was nice to go into a castle that was complete with the roof. We’ll worth a visit and fantastic views from the top. Another reason to have a National Trust membership
A. L.
Really nice here peaceful. It was more then we expected. Everyone enjoyed it. We had a nice lady greeting us on the front and explained what we could see and where to go to enter the castle she was so polite and helpful. The castle was amazing and lots to see and learn my children loved it and so did we.
L. C.
A fabulous place to spend a couple of hours. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Be aware it is a bit of a climb to the top, but worth it for the views over Lincolnshire.
B. P.
A very interesting place which is not that well publicised but as we were in the area we were intrigued by the images and ventured over to see more. Several areas to view especially if you can climb the spiral staircase to view from the roof. Toilets on site and although there is not cafe, the church next door does offer tea coffee and light bites.
A. Y.
Lovely place to visit with children. Our 5 year old loved climbing up all the stone stairs to the roof and setting the amazing view. When we went there were also done fun games for the children to play with on the lawn
G. C.
Tattershall Castle is a beautiful place to visit and to go to the top of the castle with an amazing view from the top. Really nice church in the grounds as well.
S. T.
Perfect day out. I was lucky enough to be on the top of the castle while the spitfire was flying over the top amazing experience would and will go again. Even more lucky enough to live across the road from it.
B. G.
Really good castle. Only two rooms toy can't get into.
Very well cared for.
Well worth a visit.
N. B.
If your in the area definitely go and see Tattershall Castle, it only takes an hour or so to look around. The Castle itself has serval floors to look around and you can go all the way up to the roof also, the grounds and moats are nice and a perfect place to bring a picnic on a nice day. The don't sell any refreshments but the town centre which is a short walk/drive away has shops where you can get an ice cream etc. (The sweet shop on the High Street was a perfect stop for our kids after the Castle visit for ice cream and slushy drinks)
S. S.
A great place to visit. We climbed to the top of the castle - views fantastic. Informative staff and very well kept. Lots of steps but you can stop on each floor. A lot of historical information throughout. Shop very small. A tea/coffee machine would make visitors stay longer.
A. S.
Super restored fifteenth century brick keep on thirteenth century foundations. Double moated. Visitors can explore the whole castle from basement to roof via spiral staircase.
P. L. (.
Nice grounds for a picnic. Interesting building and amazing 360 degree views over the battlements!
J. L.
Unfurnished Castle, well kept, beautiful views from the top, many narrow, windy steps to every floor
J. H.
A relatively small site in terms of the grounds that it's set in, but honestly one of the most enjoyable visits to a National Trust site this year for me.
Absolutely stunning views from each side of the castle. Cute little used book shop to pick up a bargain or two for later on.
If you're a plane spotter, bring some binoculars - from one aspect at the top of the tower you have a great view of the runway at RAF Conningsby. We watched Eurofighters taking off, landing and flying in formation.
A brilliant afternoon!
L. L.
Very interesting places to visit with stunning views from the top of the castle, and a lovely little tea room inside the old church
p. b.
Interesting history to a different style of castle. If visiting beware there a lot of steps to the battlements but worth it for the views. No refreshments available here, so bring your own. Plenty of places to sit.
A. S. P.
We had a great time visiting Tattershall Castle, the kids loved looking at all the intriguing and unique structure and workmanship, as well as learning about the History of the castle. There was also some games for them to play as they explored, that they loved having a go at too.
There is areas for you to have your own picnic and the shop also sells Drinks and Ice Creams, even an ice cream for the dog! Dogs are welcome in the castle grounds.
All in all, a great day, the kids asked as we left, when we could go again!
M. B.
Great visit, didn't realise the castle was owned by Lord Cromwell.
r. w.
We took my 5 year old and he had a super day. He loved going to the top of the castle, and down into the dungeon. The views from the top were amazing - such a clear day we could see Lincoln cathedral and Boston church. The displays of medieval dancing, archery and the talk and demonstration on armour were fascinating. Our son joined in with the dancing, archery and using the fighting swords etc under supervision. A very good day out, well worth the entrance fee.
D. T.
This was one of the first buildings in England that used bricks instead of stone. Whilst the building has been restored, especially internally, its structure has withstood both the test of time and historical events that might have seen it suffer a different fate and has left it intact.
Whilst the rooms inside are quite empty other than the fireplaces, the roof is a great place to look across South Lincolnshire and you can clearly see Lincoln Cathedral and St. Botolphs in Boston (Boston Stump)
c. s.
Lovely day out and a glorious sunny day. Lots of seating and there is really good information about the castle within the rooms. Very interesting history and the story of its refurbishment in 1911 to 1914. The picture is a view from the battlements on the top. Had to think that as we were holding the handrail going up the steps which is built into the walls, we were touching something that Oliver Cromwell and his wife would have used back in the 1400s. Can also recommend a cafe nearby in Coningsby called the Ginger Cow. Excellent food and service and a good menu.
L. N.
Gorgeous location and all kept beautifully. Dog friendly is always a plus.
H. P.
Enjoyed a visit to Tattershall Castle. Very interesting with many rooms and a good climb to the rooftop where you have spectacular views. The games on the lawn were a brilliant idea. A great few hours spent with family. Would recommend a visit.
M. T. S.
Had a lovely couple of hours here, well worth the visit. Lovely place to sit outside and have a picnic. Will need to bring your own food and drinks. Definitely would go again, you do need to book in advance
m. a. (.
Amazing place also the old church next to it , a must visit 🔆
P. F.
Interesting history and well restored. Not a great deal of facilities for families but we enjoyed. Our kids went up and down the tower twice and played on the grass area.
No cafe, did have a mobile coffee stall.
Handy stop off on our trip, as NT members worked well for us
L. B.
Great place, lovely building and so different being built from brick. Not suitable if you can't manage steps though,as there's 149 of them.
C. L.
Well work s visit! And make the most of the volunteers... friendly and very knowledgeable! Learned so much!
C. H.
Beautiful property to look at. Fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.
S. P.
Really beautiful place with lots to look at. Good entry price and a little gift shop at the end. Clean toilets and well looked after grounds. Really enjoyed reading the history about the place as we walked around. Well worth the money :)
T. k.
Visited yesterday with the family took us about an hour to look around was fun for the kids to do climbing all the way to the top and stopping on each floor for a look at cells and old bedrooms, the pricing was pretty fair considering some places alike charge around £20pp it cost £15 for 3 adults and the under 5 children go free.
T. W. A.
Great morning as trust members it's free. Lots of stairs but Great views at the top
R. H.
A very interesting building with loads of historical facts and features. We'll presented on the simple story boards. Good views from the top and an easy climb up a big spiral staircase. Very nice cake in the tea rooms.
P. L.
A lovely experience for all ages! Plenty of places look around, interesting information about the tower on each level and plenty of views of the Lincolnshire skyline at the very top,. Highly recommended.
T. S.
An attractive castle with a beautiful, wide spiral staircase right up to the roof. The roof is fascinating and has lovely views across Lincolnshire. Lots of interesting tower rooms, open halls and lovely carved fireplaces.
Very friendly staff. A short walk from the car park. A small gift shop.
N. D.
We had a lovely afternoon visit to Tattersall Castle. A well preserved piece of history. A lot of steps to the top but well worth it for the terrific views. Thank you to Andrew for the very informative chat about the artifacts found in the moat....a funny man. We now know about his accoutrement 🙂
W. H.
This is a fascinating place. First, beware that it involves a lot of stairs 149 up to the top and a dozen or so down the cellar. Second although there is no catering of any kind here, the church next door is a cafe, so it is plausible to get tea and cakes, church volunteer style.
The castle has an amazing history, which you can read about elsewhere. It is a significant structure on the Lincolnshire landscape and well worth visiting. Hope for a clear day, because if you get the roof you can see about 20 miles, including Lincoln Cathedral and Castle 17 miles away.
If you're in the area, don't miss this!
V.
Beautifuly kept and informative with great views across the countryside. A real pleasure to visit!!
D. S.
Striking brick built castle set in beautiful grounds with a moat. Knowledgeable and friendly guides. Exciting visit for children with plenty of stairs to climb. Well worth a visit.
N. B.
Great view from the top! Great medieval construction
S. B.
Had a lovely day. But surprised it was not English Heritage ! Had to wait till 3 to see Pantry.
Grounds well kept, staff lovely . Interesting Church next door 🙂oh no cafe take a picnic
T. W.
Very good restaurated castle. No dogs allowed in the tower but in the garden. You can't leave your dogs in the car because of regular checks in the car park.
A. U.
I was inquisitive to find out more about this brick built Castle, starting at the bottom I ventured into the basement which has low ceilings and four meter thick walls to support the building.
Quite narrow spiralling stairs leed to the upper floors.
Not a lot to see in the rooms but I found the stained glass windows very interesting as a record of previous owner occupancy.
From the rooftop vantage point you can see 18 to 20 miles 360 degrees around.
M. S.
Really enjoyed our visit to the castle. Was surprised to be able to climb stairs to the top having arthritis in my hip. The views from top were fantastic. Recommend to all.
S. W.
A steep climb to the top but well worth it for the views
T. K.
Went here when it was closed so can't vouch for the full experience but you can see the church and castle quite well and there's a free car park offering an attractive walk along the nearby River. Impressive building and worth a visit.
T. O.
Great place to visit. 149 steps to the top on a spiral staircase. Great views once you're up. No cafe on site but the church next door was open for tea and coffee.
s. B. (. b.
Not for elderly who cannot manage steps there's a lot to climb not for Kids pushchairs either no toilets no cafe you can take picnic have on grounds
R. E.
A castle ruin but with the tower still in use and available to explore from the basement to the roof, with information and displays along the way. Over 130 steps to the roof in total so recommended stopping off and exploring each floor on your way up to the roof! Wide stone spiral staircase that may not be suitable for everyone.
C. D.
Well worth a visit, interesting history, free car parking. Picnic tables, pop available but a coffee shop would be nice. Small shop with very friendly and helpful staff.
D. S.
The building itself is really interesting but they certainly are missing a trick by not furnishing the rooms.. one brick room is the same as the next. . There was a lack of information in most of the rooms.. just empty no explanation... not one I will revisit...
A. D.
There is not a great deal inside the castle but the grounds/castle are still worth a visit. Great views from the top. Do check the opening days/times before you visit.
C. M. M.
Terrific place. Incredibly interesting. Highly recommended. No fault of the National Trust at all, but the building is quite sparse, but that's the only slight downside.
N.
It’s a quick walk around this impressive castle, parking is limited when busy but staff nice and a great little shop, you can get coffee/tea etc. from the church nearby when it’s open, this is run by the church and volunteers.
T. F.
Very nice walk down the river with the dog. Plenty to see if the RAF are taking off, all be it a bit loud. You can walk around the church yard and into the church. The castle doesn't allow dogs and doesn't open until 10:30 and is £8:00 each for entry.
M. S.
A wonderful example of the National trust keeping our heritage in a user helpful way. History of 13th century up to WW2. Wonderful and plenty of room for the kids.
A. M.
Very interesting history and beautiful tower. Lots of steps!! Good place for picnics. Only a limited amount of snack food in the shop along with a coffee machine and cold drinks. Tower is surrounded by 2 moats, with small children this is something to be wary off as they are not fenced. Definitely worth a visit!
m. B.
Lovely place to visit. Took our American family to a REAL castle! They also had a school trip there which looked lots of fun. Staff dressed up in appropriate clothing. Beautiful church in the grounds too.
A. M.
Great place to walk around and packed full of history and things to look at. Lord Curzon has a lot to be thanked for in regards to the restoration and purchase of the castle.
E. R.
It's an empty medieval castle.....there are stunning views from the top on a clear day, but it's a lot of steps to get up there!
f. r.
Great place to visit. Very well preserved. Free parking. As an option there are tablets for guided tours. If you have small children's there are some medieval games for them to play so excellent!
No cafe
J. S.
This is an adventurous and unusual castle. It was very fun for my teenagers to climb, run around and explore. They want to return on a regular (non Christmas decorated) day to play hide and seek. The Christmas decorations were beautiful, though!
Z. M.
Worth a visit, no cafe but the church next door offers cheap refreshments - £2 for tea/coffee with a cake/biscuit.
Definitely pay the extra £2 to get the audio tablet, brings the whole castle to life as your walk around the different rooms. Some rooms are empty, and some are missing. There are signs and notice boards around but the tablet definitely added to the experience.
It was really good for us because we could look after a running toddler whilst listening to the audio.
R. B.
Bank holiday activities were a pleasant surprise as we stopped by on our way home from a camping weekend. Very lovely and welcoming staff.
T.
A really nice castle with beautiful views. Recommended for a nice, hot day as it was very windy when we went... It's a little pricey to visit but given that it's free parking and probably costs a crazy amount to maintain, that's fine.
It's the views that make it. You can see for MILES!
A. S.
Stunning views across the Lincoln Cathedral and Boston Stump, from the top of this National Trust castle. Great to watch to jets take off from RAF Coningsby.
Free car park. Grounds and ground floor accessible to wheel chairs.
Cafe (proper coffee) with plenty of seating outside in the delightful garden, or upstairs.
Second hand bookstall also upstairs in the gift shop.
Toilets in a toilet block.
Very large sandpit with buckets and spades to play in.
Lots of games in the castle for children to play with.
Steps are very wide and well kept to each level of the castle
Great place to take a picnic. Lots of events on throughout the year too.
A bonus is the church at the side of the castle (not related) which is beautiful and serves tea and cake.
T. B.
The castle has great views and impressive building. The inside is basic. The could be much more to guide you through the history. Two floors have nothing. Nice little gift shop
S. R.
Great day out fabulous building home to Lord Cromwell
M. K.
Visited when they had a medieval day and was great fun. Good amount of parking with a small shop. You'll need to bring your own food, but there is a co-op within 5 minutes walking distance.
E. K.
A brilliant place for the family or even just a lonely stroll through history. The castle grounds were once used as a training facility by the famous Captain John Smith- one of the founders of Virginia in North America. Aside from the castle and it's history, the scenery and architecture are enough to make it worth a visit.
H. J.
Lovely grounds to wander in. Bit of a climb to the top for good views across the area. Bit of a bonus to see the jets flying out of RAF Conningsby. The history of the castle was explained interestingly. Loved the brickwork!
C. F.
Nice place for an afternoon or morning visit, not enough for a full day out though. Be prepared to climb a lot of stairs on a narrow spiral staircase made of stone, if you want to see all the rooms and reach the top. The most interesting thing for me was looking for the 200yr old graffiti you can find scratched and carved into the stonework. They're having a childrens play area built ready for this summer (2019) so that should add some more time to the stay. All it needs after that would be a nice little place to eat.
D. P.
Stunning Castle in beautiful gardens. You must go to the top on a clear day as the views are stunning, there is an audio tour that you can do and on one level there are medieval games that children can play. Each level has information about what it was used for but the top has an amazing view. Toilets and a small gift shop are also on site.
M. R.
This is a proper castle keep. You feel as if you have stepped back in time walking around these floors. The Trust have kept it simple but provided lots of information so you can imagine how life was in this magnificent building. Well worth climbing to the top to see the views.
D. B.
Stunning red brick keep set in extensive grounds with plenty of room for children to run around. The keep is open to visitors and each floor has information about what it is used for and stunning stained glass windows with each owners coat of arms. You are able to go to the top which on a good day has stunning views of the Lincolnshire country side. There is a small gift shop on site and toilets. Overall a great place to visit.
P. A.
One of the kids favourite places, gives them lots of excersice climbing the steps and always loads to do. They love playing the old games on each floor and watching the history of the castle. Nice calm atmosphere with no queuing which is great for my son who has autism.
S. W.
Good condition keep with multiple floors to investigate. We actually visited during a civil war re-enactment with many stalls and demonstrations within the grounds and highly recommended. An added bonus is the village also held a beer and cider event to round off the day.
D. S.
Interesting castle and if you go up the tower good view of surrounding country. ( Including aircraft taking off from raf Coningsby )
R. M.
Great Castle, really enjoyed the experience, good information about its history throughout and we were lucky enough to go on a day coinciding with a medieval festival 👍 The church next to the castle is also an interesting visit and serves up a very nice portion of tea & cake.
V. C.
Wonderful, friendly and helpful service. Truly beautiful piece of history and beautiful views. Kids loved the trails. We'll done national trust
P. U.
I loved the views from the roof of the castle. There has been a castle on this site from the early 13th century. I like the games they had put out for the children. The parlour fireplace has some nice stone cravings. The stained glass windows commissioned by Lord Curzon to commemorate the later owners of Tattershall are particularly lovely. The children loved climbing up the winding stairs to the top and exploring the basement. The guides were friendly and very knowledgeable. I would recommend a visit.
m. s.
Beautiful historic building. In very good condition and easy access. Stairs can be a little daunting but we'll worth the effort fir the view from the top.
I. F.
Great times had every visit, plenty to see and a great view from the castle top. Interesting day out, plus todays Christmas market was very enjoyable.
D. L.
As national trust members we popped in here on the way to a couple off days away near Skegness. Really nice building, 130 steps to the top and fantastic views of the surrounding area. Also had the added bonus of seeing (and hearing!!) RAF Tornadoes taking off from the nearby RAF Conningsby. No cafe but hot drinks available from the small shop.
J. P.
The castle was great, looked brilliant well kept, media guide was worth the £2, nice views from the top and adjacent church was nice. Kids and adults loved it.
G. R.
Lovely castle, my mother got married here and the castle was a beautiful backdrop for their wedding photos,
It's a wonderful view from the top and the tapestry room is beautiful,
Because it's so close to RAF Coningsby sometimes your lucky enough to see the Lancaster bomber fly low past the castle which adds to the whole experience.
There is a fee to get into the castle because it's owned by the national trust but it's worth a visit.
j. g.
This is a lovely castle and grounds would really recommend it. Apart from the staircase the rest is very spacious and you don't feel cramped in the castle. On each level there's things to read about what it was used for and a great view at the top.
J. M. (. M.
Brilliant mid 15th Century castle. Main building is very complete, wonderful architecture, well worth a visit. The grounds are attractive with outdoor seating for picnics etc..
D.
Took the grandkids they loved the park and played with all the toys saw from the top all the plains taking off for a display it was awesome
r. n.
A very interesting visit and property very well looked after by the staff. Information boards clearly informed about history of the castle and it's rescue by Lord Curzon. The video about the rescue of the castle was too way out to watch all the way through!
R. H. P. W.
A lovely place and take no notice of the NT website, THERE ARE TOILETS AND TEA / CAKES ARE AVAILABLE IN THE CHURCH.
d. k.
Great place to visit. Very friendly staff and Lord Cromwell was a bonus. Could do with a tea room and/or drink facilities. The castle is great.
D. D.
Excellent location, National Trust at it's best..
B. M.
Lovely place would love to go back. But not pushchair friendly as got loose stone paths and hard to push. Also not toddler friendly as deep water filled motes everywhere easy for toddler to fall in.
C. P.
Lovely National Trust property with free parking. Dogs allowed in the grounds and on the adjacent public footpaths with walks along the river.
H. W.
Incredible brick built castle. Fantastic views from the top! Nice little National Trust shop and cafe with friendly staff. Well worth a visit.
c. w.
Wonderful place best castle I've ever been to. Recomend to anybody kids loved it . Great views from the top of the castle.
N. G.
Lovely stroll around the grounds and the castle. We were lucky with the weather and it was lovely and bright spring had well and truely sprung.
No need to book we had lots of fun and wasnt too busy when we arrived (11 ish on a sunday)
perfect place for a picnic and a stroll and lots of info if your into history
R. B.
This castle has an Interesting history, you can explore everywhere but being a old castle there's not much inside to see and currently you cannot get up on the battlements as these are closed. Not loads to keep the little ones entertained apart from a couple of games and a sort of knowledge treasure hunt. It probably does events at certain times of the year and I fleetingly saw a court jester disappear into the distance as we arrivef.
This is not a fighting castle, more of an entertaining castle used mainly by Cromwell. Rescued in 1911, there has been some restoration as you would expect. Budget around 2 hours to see this place, there is a 149 step to the roof up a spiral staircase which is not as enclosed or steep as some of the castles we've visited. The toilets are not in the property but are someway from the entrance but within walking distance. There is tea and coffee on site and a seating area upstairs inside if it's raining. There is a chance to buy second hand books at £1-£2.
The usual national trust shop supplies all the things you didn't know you needed at their "it's for a good cause" prices.
No a bad couple of hours spent but not really a castle lovers place
J. B.
Super friendly polite staff a very interesting castle to visit; well worth it if your in the area. Very small shop with a small number of seats upstairs coffee/tea available but there might not be seats if it's busy.
1.
This is well worth a look if you get a chance. It's an old castle but is full of history and located in a lovely village setting. When we visited they had a bird of prey show which was very entertaining.
D. Q.
Brilliant place to come and unwind. Especially good if you have little ones. Clean please environment. Lots to do. Would definitely come back.
E. M.
Nice for a day out. Could do with more things to do with the kids though. The sand pit last year was fab, the mini trim trail and lego/jenga is a bit naff. But the kids love a good run around the grounds tracing old walls and exploring the castle. Great when they put events on though. Staff all seem lovely there too.
G. S.
Hadn't been there since I was a kid it is still a brilliant place to visit see inside the castle Tower climb the stairs excellent grounds to walk around Battle of Britain Memorial Flight airfield nearby as well to visit
J. A.
Nice place to visit. Good vies from the top of the tower
C. D.
The building and experience is welk represented, using prompted narration, we learned much of the history of the building and life and attitudes of the period.
A brilliant visit! :-)
K. O.
Just enough information to keep you interested. The views were excellent from the top of the tower. No tea rooms, but we're in the village
P. R.
A wonderful visit! Lovely castle with good information about it's history. An amazing price for the experience you get, and the view from the top is worth the climb!
D. C.
Absolutely stunning example of a castle! So wonderful to be able to see and learn about so many different features. Numerous and very detailed info points. A fab day out 👍
J. S.
Very beautiful and historical place. Was great to walk all the way through the castle
a. S.
Very surprised by this one. The value of any experience is down the people who run it, and this lot were on another level. Knowledgeable, friendly, just lovely. Really guilded this lily well.
A. T.
The family and I had a great time at the castle; the audio guides with versions for kids and adults were particularly good. As was the bonus fly-past by a Lancaster Bomber while we were on the roof!
M. W.
Great place to spend a few hours - and even beeter when there's a special event on. The stairs in the Keep will give your legs a workout, but the views from the roof are well worth the climb. The church next door does a good trade in tea, coffee and snacks, as does the small National Trust shop on site.
T. L.
Quite good but wasn't able to acend the turrets because of maintenance.
d. r.
fantastic lovely place too visit the castle is very interesting place to visit there is good parking and plenty of things to see
E. H. W.
An enjoyable couple of hours spent exploring the castle and grounds, with a little unexpected aeroplane spotting. The children were quite amused by playing the various medieval games. However, as the castle is mostly empty, a fair amount is left to the imagination. More information/slightly more exhibition would be nice.
v. h.
A place of interest in history. We had a lovely day. And if your looky you might get a Spitfire fly over when you on the roof.
b. w.
Amazing brick castle you can look round all of it
Climb the stair case to the roof for amazing views
B. F.
Both the castle and the church are a snapshot of a period in history.
Loved our visit to both buildings.
C. W.
Truly impressive building and history.
A. S.
Great castle, good facilities with activities for the children. Slight issue with a considerable number of wasps while eating lunch however didn't spoil the day too much overall.
B. I.
Amazing! Interesting place and they bring loads of games out for the kids to play on the lawn. Highly recommend.
C. S.
Nice views. Not really a full day out though. Some activities for kids.
J. T.
Lovely place staff very welcoming
d. k.
Nice place for a picnic and short stay.
Only 4 stars because there is no playground for kids.
I. P.
Having driven by whilst staying locally before only to find it closed during the pandemic, we were pleased to be able to visit and really enjoyed it.
From the tree lined car park (watch the one way, hedge lined entrance road), there is a short path past the local bowling green and collegiate church and Almshouses then a gravel path to the entrance.
If you have mobility issues, it looks like, there is a separate, closer gravelled parking area where there is a fresh, clean and modern toilet block.
A National Trust site, it was only £5pp to go in via the separate Guardhouse building and shop. There was a warm and helpful welcome from a member of staff on a table outside who gave basic information before directing us inside to pay to enter.
Once you're in, you have free range to explore all levels of the Tower where you'll find plenty of information and activities including games for children and seasonal themes. Catch some brilliant views from the top of the tower too!
Walk the grounds and explore the ruins and moats, take a picnic and sit out on one of the tables or find a spot on the grass somewhere.
I could post more pictures, but that would only spoil the surprise for you!
Once you're done with your visit, why not stop off at the nearby Collegiate Church for a cost effective cuppa and some home made cakes from the lovely ladies at the coffee bar, find out about the resident bats, view items for sale and take a look around this lovely building before you leave.
L. G.
This picturesque castle is well worth a visit for its history and the views from the roof are amazing. Unfortunately, there is no cafe at present so would recommend taking a picnic and enjoying it in the grounds.
G. T.
Great place to visit and view from top of castle well worth the climb!
k.
Great place! What a beautiful and extraordinary building. Fantastic views from top of the tower. Highly recommended!
J. G.
Very interesting. Brilliant view when got to the top. So many steps that my legs ached, though.
A. S.
It's a beautiful castle with some superb views of the Lincolnshire countryside and RAF Coningsby. It was my first visit and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Only but slight issue is that it could offer more information on the history of the castle.
P. S.
Cracking visit and the Lancaster from BBMF came out to play
M. B.
Quite small, we went for the Easter children's event. The kids enjoyed it and it was good to see the view from the top of the castle.
c. g.
The castle was fantastic, the views were great, the brick work was unusual and beautiful.
The 417 steps climb was heart pounding and the roof was the best I've seem. The Fireplaces are huge and very interesting. Nearby church has a tea room with 2 pounds tea and cake.
f. e. s. e.
Nice well maintained castle, not as much to do as larger national trusts but worth a visit if you're close by.
N. B.
Went here in summer absolutely beautiful what a place a must see also its double moated another national Trust treasure 😃
I. T.
Amazing castle and grounds, good family day and the staff great. The interactive games partnered with the historical information keeps the kids good and interested.
l. s.
Well preserved brick castle. The view.from the top was well worth the climb.
V. p.
Dog friendly (we took it in turns to go in the tower as dogs are not allowed in this area)
Great place to visit while in the area.
M. C.
Amazing place. So full of history. The staff are really friendly and informative. Fantastic views from the top.
V. S.
Great visit here.Very interesting. Am a National Trust member so admission was free.
T. P.
Brilliant place. Atmospheric, intriguing, informative. Stay friendly and most helpful. Time well-spent.
J. M.
A super place to visit. Car parking a bit tricky as you have to enter through a gate that is adjacent to church and for a first visit it can be quite puzzling. The road to the car park is one way,m so just be aware.
A short walk to the entrance that then opens up to the ground and castle. Plenty of areas for children to play and lots of seats to just sit and enjoy.
The castle is amazing! You need to be fit to climb all the stairs to the top especially as it it winding but the view from the top is wonderful. You can see over to RAF Conningsby and if lucky watch aeroplanes take off and land. You can also see a water play park that looks great fun for children. You have a 360 degree view to enjoy and look out for miles and miles on a clear day.
The castle itself is just to be marvelled at, the whole architecture of the turrets, arches ,amazing ceilings , huge fireplaces, the numerous rooms and size of the halls plus all the brick work and tapestries.
If you want light refreshment, the adjacent church provides tea and cakes etc. and very good value!
J. w.
It was brilliant and really interesting to look around and great value for money
M. G.
Great building, but not much there in the way of historical information
d. g.
Lovely place, highly recommend it, it's not a full day out, but worth a visit.
K. G.
A nice place to visit. Pleasant surroundings and great views from the top of the castle
L.
Brill loved the place and would love to stay a night there to experience how they lived well worth a visit x and I made it to the top x
S. G.
Great place to visit, facilities were limited compared to some National Trust sites
E. O.
Beautiful scenery and beautiful castle
Great shop there too
If you have vertigo it may not be the place for you too high up but there are several floors that are lovely to walk around without going too high up.
For wheelchair users there is one part within the castle to go to (as rest is up circular staircase) but the grounds to go around are stunning and the church looks beautiful to go around too.
Plenty of benches and places to sit and take it the scenery.
P. L.
Nice place to go and visit, not an awful lot to do there though. It would be much improved if there was a cafe or restaurant to have lunch; unfortunately, they only have a small coffee house. We went when the Easter egg hunt was on and took a picnic. It does not take long to see everything, including lunch and the egg hunt we were there around 3 hours.
S. M.
Nice place to visit but disappointed that the castle was closed when we visited.
Please check opening times on the website before you come.
J. R.
Lovely national trust spot. 125 steps up to the roof, beautiful views from the ramparts and lovely gift shop and medieval church next door.
J. F.
Nice castle and grounds to explore, but quite a limited site
G. T.
Has brief history information boards in most rooms, every day is a school day
l. s.
Amazing English heritage, well maintained gardens and with great views of Lincolnshire. Lots of little games to keep the little ones interested.
K. J.
A fabulous place
Beautiful views of surrounding area Informative helpful staff
Very clean toilet block
M. P.
Very interesting Tudor castle with some fascinating facts about it's history
C. T.
Not what I expected! Great castle, offering some excellent views across the surrounding countryside. Worth a visit!
P. E.
Beautiful old castle
The kids activities were good and the fizz stand was very nice
M. S.
Never been until yesterday wow worth the money cracking views of the area. Well worth a visit.
J. B.
Lovely place could do with a tea/coffee room . But super view from the rooftop ..
T. W.
Picturesque tower sited in a small set of grounds, with an impressive perpendicular-style church next door. Small and self-contained, but well worth a visit
M. E.
Fascinating castle with beautiful grounds and on the best days views to match
R. Y.
Amazing place, always love national trust properties.
M. S.
A stunning place
A. L.
Maybe not a castle in the traditional sense and more a fortified house but a interesting building with alot of history. There is a car park just watch as you drive in and out as its narrow. There is toilets and a small gift shop. You can also get a hot drink. You can climb all the way to the top of the castle and see Lincoln Cathedral and Boston Stump on a clear day. The church is also open
R. B.
Used to visit with my grandparents years ago.
Was very happy with my latest visit, with it's polite staff, informative electronic guilds and the nice little touches (like the names on the toilets = Lords and Ladies).
J. L.
Lovely castle to visit with great history.
We even caught a display of the typhoons at RAF Conningsby from the top
G.
Good for it's historical references which are explained on information boards. The rooms are bare however so leave a lot to your imagination. Do a little bit more NT.
Church next door does a very nice cup of tea or coffee with home made cake😁
m. p.
Tattershall Castel is a story in itself .. Built in 13th Century as a manor house and fort,. By Tudor times by Henry VIII, I believe only one of four towers built with the lovely patterned brick design. It was handed to Charles Brandon who was the King`s best friend and married Mary Tudor. This is such an interesting monument, built before the other amenities of Tattershall Park and RAF Coningsby. It was left derelict for a longtime and then Lord Curzon invested money and upon his death left it to the National Trust. It is the most stunning tower and you can go inside. I recommend going up the spiral staircase to the top where you can walk round, and see the beautiful countryside. Outstanding.
R. B.
Interesting Castle with smaller surrounding grounds. The outer grounds are dog friendly and have a number of picnic tables and benches. It doesn't take long to explore so better if you only have a few hours rather than a whole day planned. There is a foot path if you want to walk to Conningsby.
J. W.
Fantastic trip. Great look around castle and grounds.. Church nice too
D. B.
Enjoyable visit to this stunning and extremely well maintained Tattershall castle. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area and the stay are very knowledgeable and friendly.
Special thanks to Su Bruzas for the exceptional customer service. Having lost my spectacles in the castle grounds they were found and posted to my home in Glasgow.
T. W.
Easy parking then a short and pretty walk via the Collegiate church (see Tom Thumb's grave inside) to the castle. Well explained throughout right up to the roof with magnificent views all round. Picnic areas in the grounds.
M. B.
Still full price to enter even if you have a dog and cannot enter the castle. There should be concessions for this.
A. B.
This castle is a reminder that one day everyone's life comes to an end. The grandeur of the castle of what it would have been when it was inhabited is left to one's imagination. The private Chambers and the dining hall and the cellar to preserve and store ales and wines is really a treat to watch.
After the visit to the castle you can go in the nearby cathedral and admire the beautiful architecture and the best stained glass in the world. There is also a lovely cafe where you can have a cake and tea served by three jovial persons who can crack a joke too.
G. M.
Fantastic place to visit. If you can, try to visit in a clear day as the views are spectacular from the top.
J. W.
Just love historical buildings 💓
H. S.
Very informative and well presented. Lovely views of the church and surrounding areas and can see for miles on a clear day.
G. R.
Excellent experience 👏 informative video and ample parking and lovely cuppa at the tea rooms Excellent
S. S. (.
Excellent day out lovely grounds great castle. Great views from the top of the castle.
J. D.
Amazing brick built tower some 500 years old, well restored thanks to Lord Curzon A must visit!
D. M.
Great views, interesting Cromwellian history.
S. L.
Great fun, my 3 year old granddaughter calls it the magical castle. Enough said!
S. A.
Great place so full of history.. Lovely staff.. One of the ladies that makes the costumes was telling me about things.. She was putting a head dress on a manakin yesterday 9th September.. There's a church near the castle as well.. & a row of cottages.. Entrance price for adults is only five pounds each. I think its good value.. Well worth a visit
S. M.
Lovely placed. Enjoyed viewing the castle and walking on the grounds
P. M.
Castle is in a lovely setting with nice (all be it small) grounds to walk around and great views from the top.
P. B.
Fantastic place to visit, so much information on display these days about the history of the castle. Excellent place to take your kids for a history infusion, the church next door is also well worth a visit, the homemade cakes are divine!
r. t.
What a wonderful place 😍🥰
C. s.
Nice to see...149 steps spiral staircase to the top so not good for the elderly or young children
S. F.
Superb place, very well kept. Helpful staff and a superb re-enactment weekend. Very enjoyable.
M. W.
Lovely dog walk around the castle and local area 👍🏽
L. L.
Lovely castle and reasonable entry cost.
K. P.
Being a national trust member I have been to Tattershall castle multiple times, it's a lovely historical site with lots to learn, little games and the climb to the top of the castle. The grounds are also nice to walk around, definitely tires the kids out (and me) I highly recommend tattershall castle & the national trust membership it's fantastic value for money & it helps keep our national trust sites maintained.
T. H.
Love this place immaculate and great for a few hours the views from the top are fantastic
L. S.
Beautiful views from the top of a well maintained castle 😍
K. G.
Everything you need for short or longer family day out, amazing castle, some activities for children. Must visit!
R. W.
First time here and we'll impressed, staff very helpful and knowledgeable, learnt a lot about the place.👍
A. Z.
We visited Tattershall Castle yesterday. The grafitti was very interesting, along with the fireplaces. We both felt that at LEAST furniture of some kind needs to be evident, the rooms are cavernous and quite honestly, emptily boring! Good views from the roof of the castle though. Very glad I'm a NT member, as it IS NOT worth the £10 entry for non members
If the Church is also maintained by the NT, then they should feel ashamed! Mouse droppings, cobwebs and general unmaintained. It was dreadful. Filthy is the word I'd use.
H. P.
Beautiful castle. Highly recommend.
R. B.
Great castle. Worth dropping in if in the neighbourhood just for the spectacular views from the top. Also just around the corner from RAF Conningby (also worth a visit for the BBMF) so may see the Spitfires or Typhoons overhead.
T. L.
Stunning. So much more than ever imagined. Watched a spitfire land while we on the roof.
The National Trust staff were all so helpful making it a really enjoyable experience.
A. G.
Thought that the castle & Guides were great but all that was missing was a sign saying " Toilets ,This way"which the guides had to explain to every family, having unknowingly strolled 20 yards past them. Nice afternoon,
R. L.
Took my Grandchildren for the Halloween treasure hunt we had a lovely time. The Castle was wonderfuly decorated. Thanks to everyone who made our day a pleasure.
c. u.
Depending on what you are after this is a good way in general to spend an hour. You have access to the top of the tower with great views around the area. You could take a picnic and sit on the small grounds.
C. M.
Absolutely loved it here. The staff are lovely and the view from the top is amazing but abit scary for me lol
S. R.
149 steps up the tower, lots of history, & good fun.
M.
Tattershall Castle is one of a kind and a totally beautiful place to visit for a little day trip.
This 15th Century castle is one of the best castles in England if you want to see a redbrick example of a castle.
Oh, and don’t forget to take your walking shoes and enjoy the spectacular grounds that surround the castle. It’s a gorgeous area.
A. B.
I visited Tattershall Castle with my daughter, who is 12, early in the year. We used the audio equipment as we wandered around the castle. The equipment gave us a running commentary in each room and allowed us to imagine life at the time that the castle was inhabited. It gave a description of how the rooms were used, who was in them, descriptions of the features and historical facts about the features. Our visit was enhanced greatly by using the audio equipment. I highly recommend this if you are visiting.
The site is supervised by volunteer staff who are very friendly and helpful. There is a small shop with historical toys and National Trust souvenirs contained within the Gatehouse and a toilet block located on a short walk behind the Gatehouse. The grounds and Castle are very well kept, as you would suspect from The National Trust.
I have given this review 5 stars because it is a place worth visiting if you enjoy a quiet, slow visit. If I was reviewing the site for young children it would not be a 5 because the facilities are not set up for young children. It does not have a play area, or cafe and although there are old fashioned games set up in a few of the rooms, young children would very quickly get bored.
S. T.
Amazing place great for a few hours visit
I. F.
A well preserved castle in a peaceful tranquil setting, apart from the occasional Eurofighter Typhoon flying overhead.
P. C.
Beautiful surroundings, historical building, lovely staff. The view of the church from the castle in the accompanying image.
C. B. A. M. C. T.
Worth visiting if your in the area.. good way to spend 3-4 hours. There is a picnic area to
S. M.
Another fantastic National Trust property, well worth a visit, great views from the top! 😃
I. B.
Good place to visit and they had a Halloween activity challenge on and my daughter enjoyed doing that. Great views from we top of the castle
E. T.
Nice and well-preserved castle, with stunning panoramic views in all directions from the roof level. The interiors are bare, although there are many informative panels. Standard entry for adults is £7.70.
R. H.
Lovely little place to visit. Nice coffee to warm up after a windy walk around the roof top! Amazing views from the top so well worth it. Very friendly staff with great knowledge of the local area and other nearby sites (I think it was Sara we spoke to in the shop)
Be aware there is no tea room so take some food but hot & cold drinks are available.
E. W.
Worth a visit spectacular views from the roof
S. O.
Lovely site, great views and nice bits of history to take in. Very peaceful couple of hours spent here
k. w.
Grandchildren enjoyed the Halloween themed Treasure Hunt. Staff very friendly and informative, David deserves 10 out of 10 for passing on his knowledge to my wife who is disabled and was unable to access the upper floors.
F. M.
Great day out with so much to see and explore. There is fun games for the kids and lots of knowledge and facts. You can go right up to the top of the castle although they were doing repairs when we visited so we just went as far up as we could. The views were still amazing! Dogs are allowed in the grounds but not the castle itself.
B. N.
Exvellant place to visit for a couple or 3 hours. Interesting history in a nice location. If you are lucky youll be able to watch acrobatics from the fighter of the nearby RAF base whilst you have your lunch!
A. T.
Had a great day out. The castle has a great view from the top.
A. W.
Picturesque tudor castle with amazing views of the surrounding countryside
C. D.
A great place this half term. National Trust castle great history flights of stairs to climb, large rooms beautiful stained glass and carved original fireplaces. Fascinating history. Adventure trail for children, craft activities for small amount plenty of picnic areas neat little shop. Great afternoon.
C. B.
Fantastic historical castle, the Grand kids loved it, nice little gift shop. I would like to see the addition of a small coffee/snacks facility and possibly ice creams.
h. b.
Interesting place, with very good views
R. C.
Lovely castle, Well maintained ..great view from the top
I. G.
Brilliant,as long as you can climb steps to top of the castle good for a picnic ,you can buy a cup of tea and slice of cake from church for £2.00 very good choice of 🍰 etc.
s. m.
Brilliant place but wait till after November as the wall walk is closed till then.
P. B.
Wonderful experience very interesting to see.
P. H.
This is a lovely national trust property. It's not a long walk from the car park. on the way however you walk past a beautiful old 14th century church. The staff were very helpful at the shop ticket booth. They pointed out where the only toilets for the site were. And then you had this beautiful old castle to wander around.
R. S.
There's a free parking here, a gift shop and a café. The castle offers stunning views of the surrounding area. I visited during the build up to Halloween, and the staff provided some great activities and decorations for the kids. You are free to wander around the castle, there's not a lot of furnishings but there are many historical features.
A.
Impressive structure and well built,Not too much furniture inside (which i like)fantastic views from the top! Very friendly welcome from the staff and nice grounds to explore.
W. S.
Not the original castle but a superb replica building with some of the original castle features remaining and a fascinating story behind it. The castle's in a lovely setting with fantastic views when you get to the top, there is plenty of wildlife on the site and the associated church is worth a visit as well. Just a shame about the modern day graffiti etched into the stonework...off with their heads!!
I. G.
An interesting old brick castle. Good history behind it.
C. W.
A great little castle. It was very windy today, so sadly they had to close the castle while we were there for safety reasons, but we managed to have a quick look around before they did. The staff were wonderful though, really helpful, and it was very dog friendly. Would recommend as a trip, especially for small children
M. W.
Lovely old castle presented very well. Digital guided tours available. Great little gift shop which also sells refreshments. Staff friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Second hand bookshop upstairs in gift shop which is good for a rummage. Free entry to national trust members.
C. K.
Brilliant visit to the castle today, stunning views, great history in and around the castle and the event was amazing. Excellent display of medieval musical instruments with a knowledgeable explanation that kept even my teenagers interested. The archery was also very engaging and entertaining and the final jousting tournament was amazing.
N. H.
Beautiful monument steeped in history, great staff and interesting events.
P. W.
Great views from this historic building.
E. B.
We visited for the second time today and the kids loved it just as much as before. The staff are lovely and we explored the castle and grounds including the sand pit which was a big hit. I'd avoid taking a pushchair if you can as they're isn't anywhere secure to store it. I returned mine to the car and popped the baby into the carrier to go up into the castle. Parking is limited but we arrived just after opening and had no problem. We took a picnic both times as there is ample space to enjoy it. Lovely day out, highly recommended.
L. F.
Very interesting and fascinating history. Plenty for kids to do. Well worth a visit
M. H.
Fabulous castle. One of the best I have ever seen. 250 steps and lots to see. Great views from the top too
C. -. (.
I enjoy visiting quite regularly with my daughter who seems very taken with the old castle. An interesting and we'll restored building with nice grounds and plenty of historical information. It's a long climb up the steps to the top but the view from up that high makes it well worth it. If you're lucky you might see some of the Battle of Britain memorial flight coming into or going out from RAF Coningsby really close by! Always a pleasure from the top of the castle!
There are also regular events held here which make it well worth returning to multiple times and are usually aimed at the younger ones.
All in all, I highly recommend Tattershall Castle
K. W.
We stopped off on the way home from a couple of days away. We went and had a look around the church, which was lovely. We went over to the castle to see how much it was which seemed reasonable, but didn't really have much time to spend to walk round so it didn't seem worth it. We will be back another day when we have more time, probably spend the whole day there. I know families who come here often and they really enjoy it.
A. B.
We had a great family day out here despite it being cold and rainy. Kids loved it, there was a lot of information about the history of the castle and we were able to eat our packed lunch in the room above the shop to shelter from the rain.
L. W.
Close to Tattershall Lakes Country Park, where I was staying. Alway pay a visit when staying here. It's a National Trust property and being a member I just pop in if only to sit in the grounds. Lovely view from the top of the castle of the surrounding area.
J. B.
Enjoyed was able to go up tower lovely place for picnic only one set toilets shame could do put portaloo somewhere as some people have disabilities.. and also some people have water problems... but would still like to cover these areas and look for themselves and sit and have a nice picnic as it is a lovely place for everyone to be able to come visit
R. G.
Good place to go for a couple of hours. The castle 🏰 certainly is iconic and is it very good condition considering the age.
Views from the top of the countryside are spectacular, if you don’t mind walking up all the stairs. A must visit if you’re in the area.
R. C.
Great place to stop off. Won't take long. If nothing else, good to watch the jets take off
B. 8.
Nice place, interesting but not a lot to interest younger children. There was a treasure hunt for the kids at a small cost with a prize at the end but no play equipment/play area, although there is plenty of room for the kids to run about. The admission fee was very reasonable and the grounds are very well maintained.
J. B.
A very quiet and relaxing place to stay
A. J.
If it is just to get a line of sight all the way from the Boston Stump in the south to Lincoln Cathedral 18 miles to the north, Tattershall is every bit worth it.
V.
Great castle. Would be lovely if it was furnished. Great opportunity to show just how colourful medieval life was for those at the top of the social ladder. The digital film of the castles history was an exercise in computer graphics. I'm sure the technician had a wonderful time with the graphics but gave precious little comprehensible history of the castle. A spoken history illustrated with photographs and graphics would have been much clearer and certainly more entertaining.
c. t.
This photo was taken from the grounds of castle , it was civil war weekend lots of people dressed in period costume, how things were done and made a great day out
L. S.
Lovely old castle in a great location
D. S.
An amazing place to visit. The castle is unique. Kids love it
D.
We visited this property during a day out at another location. We were pleased to have made the effort to pass by, as the property and the grounds are stunning.
Once you've worked your way to the top of the building, the views are beautiful. To think that somebody owned all of that land is mind blowing.
Take advantage of the audio guide provided. It really adds to the experience, and helps you to visualise the lifestyle of that time. The building itself has a few period items within it, however, I would have loved to have seen a fully furnished castle.
The on-site shop is stocked with lovely gifts and goodies, however, they are very pricey.
Dogs are not allowed in the property, but are allowed on the grounds.
N. T.
Nice tucked away national trust property. Great to walk around on your own accord but not much in the way of amenities like a cafe. Grounds are dog friendly however the castle itself is not.
L. N.
I loved Tattershall Castle, it was so informative and the people there were very nice and helpful.
The only thing is that there is no food, apart from cake and crisps available, but plenty of places for picnics, which proved popular. Lots of steps to climb in the Castle so be prepared!
s. w.
the views from the top of this castle are absolutely stunning!
P.
Was closed when we visited Friday afternoon, missed the online extra info ref closure.looks very nice.
R. J.
Fun day for all ages. Came for the Extreme Teddy Bear Picnic and we had a great time. Lots of things to do and see as you make your way up all the steps. Lots of picnic space. And the Lancaster was a joy to watch as it flew over several times.
B. J.
Interesting place with so much to learn about from a very important part of English history. Although it's not like other stately homes with antiques etc there is enough information to keep you interested with a free audio description included. The staff forgot to offer it to us so make sure you ask for it. As a separate benefit, if you like modern fighter aircraft its a great place to watch them from the neighbouring airfield.
B. L.
Wonderful old castle with moat, sandpit and a coffee shop. The castle is sparse but fascinating, with multiple levels (and lots of stairs) The views from the roof are incredible, you can watch the jets at neighbouring RAF Coningsby, admire the country park or take in the views towards Lincoln cathedral.
J. m.
Loved it really lovely chilled place
T. B.
Much more interesting than we expected. Our grandsons had a great time exploring the 4 levels of the fully restored castle. Both it's restoration and the role it played in WWII were an education to me.
P. B.
Went here with the family on a lovely hot day and everyone had a great time. My 2 year old loved it so much he has been going on about castles since then. We did an Easter egg hunt which was alot of fun and there was plenty to see and do as well as some ye olde games. But what let it down was the facilities. Even though it was a hot day toilets were freezing! In the end had to change both baby and toddler in the car.
C. F.
Love this castle, very historic, the church next door is also well worth a visit if only for the refreshments & bats !
S. B.
Visited Tattershall Castle to see a play called the Tempest by William Shakespeare! Excellent even though the production was interrupted by jet airplanes at times!
K. M.
Nice little castle. Well looked after. But nothing inside, could do with more info, mock up of how it looked? Good parking and cafe. Ideal for a picnic. Maybe not enough there to warrant travelling far for. Dogs not allowed in the castle, but we took it in turns and some nice meadows behind.
J. S.
National Trust, the building was rescued from dereliction and opened to the public in 1914.
R. B.
Very well preserved Medieval castle with fantastic brickwork and windows. The normal cost is £7 to get on but we went to the Christmas Craft weekend and it was all free! You can walk up the stone spiral steps all the way to the roof where there are fantastic views over the Lincolnshire countryside.
M. H.
Absolutely loved the visit here
A. H.
Very interesting building steeped in history. Good media guide. Marked down a star for not having a proper tea room. Only a coffee machine at the entrance. Still worth a visit if you like history.
R. F.
Wow what a place be sure to go to the top the view is out of this world
C. D.
Really nice place. A lot of steps so if you struggle walking I would not advise. You get to go all the way to the top. Which is very high. Lovely scenic views. Lots of little rooms. Would have loved to see it when it was used. I like stuff like that.
J. M.
Amazing place, history and beautiful..
S. A.
Pleasant 2hrs spent with the family here. Free parking is close by and staff in shop were very friendly and helpful - joined the National Trust here. Shop sells gifts, snacks, ice-cream and hot/cold drinks. Best to bring own picnic if possible. Audio guide is good for looking around and learning about the castle. Wonderful view from the top of the castle! Lovely picnic area with tables/benches and deck chairs too. Toilets were very clean! Only 5 mins drive to the Tattersall Aquapark.
M. D. V. E.
A real gem. Helpful Trust staff with an ‘ok’ shop, deck chairs to sit in, reasonable clean toilets but a stunning old castle. What it lacks in outer walls it compensates inside, though the Trust have closed the roof parapet, denying the visitor wonderful views.
K. P.
Lovely day despite the drizzle, imagine spending more time around the grounds in finer weather. Great views
A. E.
Lovely little castle and moat. Well kept, lovely lawn for picnics and has some children's games out
R. D.
Nice big castle. All the rooms a bare and good views from the roof. They allow dogs everywhere except in the castle but the grounds are small, so the dog walking is done on the footpaths by the river.
L. B.
Like all National Trust properties, it is well kept, and beautifully presented.
Information boards are plentiful, and tell the story of the castle in detail.
On the day I attended the castle high winds meant access to the topmost part of the castle (The roof-top battlements) was not available, but is usually accessible.
There are a lot of steps as the castle has many levels, and it is a spiral stair.
Dogs are permitted on the site, but not in the building.
While you're here, it is also worth looking at the Collegiate Church of the Holy Trinity, which is only a couple of minutes walk away.
B. D.
Excellent display of jousting tents and archery outside on our visit and staff were helpful but these are temporary. The problem is the bareness of the interior of the castle which ought to have furnishings from a particular historical period to enable you to understand how it was used. 8yr olds thought it was not very exciting inside.
A. W.
Tattershall Castle is a really interesting place to visit . this was our first visit and we were really impressed with how well preserved the castle is for its age. There are a lot of boards inside the castle with information on each room and there are several floors to the castle itself for you to explore including the battlements right on the top . there is a toilets nearby and also a really nice little gift shop . all in all well worth the £8.
E. B.
Beautiful castle. Loved it.
S. C.
Rather disappointing that the medieval tournament was so poorly attended, however, the NT didn't provide any incentive to stay- there were no food or refreshments other than water or cans of pop. The local church provided some poor un refrigerated sandwiches with no food allergies catered for and bat droppings all over the area of seats.
The tourney was very enjoyable for lids with the announcer loving the sound of his own voice.
The castle is well maintained with helpful posters strategically placed. Could do with some money spending on it to clear the moat and upgrade refreshments.
However, all in all a good morning out.
O. I.
I was just passing by when I saw the castle. Impressive height, but unfortunately not a lot to see inside of it. The rooms are empty. But when you arrive at the top, it's a spectacular view. Outside court it's very nice as well.
K. S.
Wonderful
D. T.
Small by national trust standards, but enough there to spend a couple of hours looking round the castle and grounds. Very hard to get into at the moment though due to covid restrictions. Hopefully this will change in the near future.
L. K.
What views on a lovely clear day. Interesting history. Not furnished. Need to use your imagination.
r. l.
Very nice.good views on top
g. l.
Lovely place reccomend the church next door for tea and cake
A. A.
Tattershal Castle is a lovely place to visit they have events on throughout the year and is enjoyable for the whole family, climbing up to the top of the castle and looking across Lincolnshire is a beautiful view and the castle is very educational for Kids too. I would highly recommend for a day out.
G. S.
Nice gem to come to, Tattershall Castle is a fascinating place with lots of interesting history. There's plenty of information available from the staff and signage.
Unfortunately the battlements were closed due to the wind, but there was still plenty of impressive views out the windows. Really good day out!
M. P.
What a view from the battlements!
On a fairly clear day you can see further than 10 miles all around from the top of the battlements. It's worth the effort of climbing all 149 steps to admire one of the best views in the area.
Very well maintained and an absolute must if you're in the area.
C. H.
Amazing building,
Soooo many steps 😮
Loved it
T. Y.
A very well restored example of a a pre-reformation brick keep castle with obligatory moat. On a very clear day, from the top of ramparts you can see Lincoln Cathedral to the North and Boston Stump to the East. There's not a huge amount to see inside the Castle, just a few notice boards, some wall hangings and an obligatory information video. The grounds are well kept, but could do with a proper children's play area. Apart from that well worth a good couple of hours to hang around and soak up the atmosphere.
m. j.
Very well laid out. But the path way is loose small pebbles not suitable for wedding footwear. Bearing in mind they cater for weddings. Also wheel chair ramps are provided but once again the path to the building is not suitable for wheel chair excess.
M. L.
Lovely day out plenty of space for relaxing/picnic and the tower a great privilege to be able to look round at your own pace. Bare in mind there are 149 steps to climb to see all levels.
R. P.
Interesting history and very well preserved. The weather was horrible when we were there but the views from the top are probably great on a sunny day.
S. O.
Very impressed with this castle because it must have been a feat of engineering at the time. Check out the machicolations. Relatively easy visit with toddlers. Nice gift shop with tea/coffee down at the gatehouse.
E. C.
Good day out... Interesting history of the castle building - well played out in a video presentation on the ground floor. Within the building itself there's the cellars, the ground floor and the separate upper floors that lead, ultimately, to the roof with its magnificent views across the countryside.
Lots of steps up the circular stairs set in a corner turret, but small children were galloping up them - they are wide and safe; a handrail is carved into the stone wall for the less agile.
Throughout the site toys are suited to engage small people, wooden building bricks etc inside and I spotted a large sandpit outside. A large lawn gives space for picnics, although the site shop is, as usual, an expensive place to but ice creams.
The church next to the castle was serving home-made cakes with tea and coffees - delicious and cheaper than a single iced cream. I recommend you make a stop there instead!
D. W.
Interesting place to visit maybe a touch expensive for entry at £8
L. H.
Nice hidden little gem .. great few hours there .. weather was good ... fantastic views.
Halloween preparations underway .. was looking good
R. C.
Well-kept and pleasant place to visit on sunny day. Straightforward and educational historical visit with audioguide. Take a picnic! Plenty of benches and deckchairs. You can get tea and cake in the neighbouring church.
K. K.
Nice Castle to visit not an all day thing but nice relaxing picnic tables well worth a visit but remember to book before travelling
A. T.
Lots of information inside, historically significant castle, however due to being abandoned for many years the few artifacts inside aren't particularly relevant. Audio tour available (not used, so I can't comment on it). Lots of steps/spiral staircase so may not be suitable for all.
R. B.
A splendid 15th century castle, built for show rather than defence, and now restored to allow visit to most of what is left. The climb up the spiral stairs to the 3 floors of official and private functions was well worth it to see examples of original rib vaulted brickwork. Even though the top level of battlements was not accessible, the view over the flat Lincolnshire fens was clear, thanks to the cold east wind
A. C.
Bad points. No furniture in the castle is a slight disappointment. Lots of stairs to the top so this is bad if you are disabled. The parlour was closed for a wedding.
Good points: well maintained, good views from the top.
A. a. D.
Nice castle, plenty of history
worth the walk up to the top, lovely views Free carpark. It's just missing a cafe or restaurant. Drink and cake at church next door for £2.
A. S.
Very nice castle. Really well preserved and laid out. Great for photos, and overlooks the apron at RAF Conningsby, which is great if, like me, your a bit of an Aviation enthusiast.
R. M.
Great experience during the heatwave. Cool inside, amazing views on top.
S.
Really well maintained and interesting place. A credit to history and the National Trust. A definitely 'must see' and the medieval games were great fun for kids and adults alike!
J. O.
Kids activities for half term were perfectly pitched for my 4-year-old - she had a blast. Wonderful building with plenty to spark off the imagination of young and old.
M. W.
Interesting place and enjoyable 1/2 day activity. Good presentation by an in character guide. Members so can't comment on value.
J. B.
Lots to explore and lovely grounds. There was a nice crafting table when we went that the kids loved. Would benefit from a kids playground but we had a fun day.
E. C.
Small but lovely grounds. Walking 149 steps to the top a must as the views are great. Have afternoon tea in the church grave yard next door where your dogs are welcome!
M. N.
Well kept grounds and a amazing castle, with friendly knowledgeable staff on hand. Make sure you grab a multimedia tour guides, they are a great way to guide you through the castle at your own pace.
S. S.
Lovely castle, thanks to Shepherd Will for telling us the history of the castle, well worth the £5 entry fee, remember to book tickets in advance
M. D.
Staff are friendly it's not a lot of money each 3 hours
S.
Visited on a wet day sadly. Plenty of open space for a picnic. Regrettably no lift so mobility limited me to visiting just up to the first floor. Staff informative and friendly
I.
Good day out at the castle, great views from the top tower and everything still as it was nice grounds and most and in the church next door is Tom thumbs grave, lots of events throughout the year for all the family
M. R.
Peaceful break here lovely weather too
P. D.
A great place for a family day out and a bit of history.
S. R.
Lovely place. Especially at this time of year when it's lit up.
R. B.
Nice castle, however staff members made us a bit unwelcome. When aproached the castle just before 4pm we were told the castle will be closed soon, at 5pm and the last admission happens now.
We decided to come over next day and we realised there not much time needed to see everything. We stayed for around 45 min and it was plenty of time.
Visited on the 11th and 12th of March.
A. C.
Excellent venue with lovingly restored areas and beautiful grounds. Excellent that you can access the whole of the castle and view the county of Lincolnshire for Miles around.
If you are lucky you may get a flyby from the Battle of Britain flight based at nearby RAF Conningsby.
P. H.
Impressive castle set in beautiful surroundings. Excellent views from the turrets. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff.
A. S.
Really impressive castle with commanding views across the county, including to Lincoln Cathedral. The loose gravel surfacing on the driveways and paths is not very buggy or wheelchair friendly though.
A. I.
We quite often bring visitors to Tattershall Castle. It makes for a very interesting outing and one that can easily be done in a morning or an afternoon.
My only complaint in this occasion was that it was a VERY cold and windy day and we were kept waiting for more than five minutes for them to open the gates. That's not a huge amount of time but seemed endless as it was sooo cold.
S. H.
Brilliant place to visit with family friends
C. P.
Free parking. Flat access. Less than the usual information available.
J. A.
Beautiful building, the tapestries are amazing, the roof battlements give amazing views, plenty of history boards and maps, guided tours, lots of Chambers off the main castle to explore, well stocked gift shop and 2nd hand book shop in the guardroom, hot drinks available, good parking, toilets,
L. K.
It wasn't open so unfortunately we were not able to go in. Look nice from the outside though and the church next door was lovely.
B.
Love it, love it, love it when i went there were spitfires and WW2 bombers great day and fantastic views from the top of the castle.
D. H.
Very interesting Castle with great views across Lincolnshire.
Excellent value.... well worth a visit.
G. B. M.
Oliver Cromwell lived here and that makes this keep in the middle of Lincolnshire very interesting. The moat remains and the keep is still in great condition. No cafe though and there isn't a lot to do, so if you are planning to come here for the day you might have to complement it with a trip to the sea, for example.
s. B.
First time we have ever been was this year. Our daughter treat us to a weekend in a lodge (Goldeneye which was also 5star). We all loved it. Lots to do and a very relaxing place. We booked for another long weekend straight after..
d. m.
It was only a quick visit. We would like to have stayed longer and looked at detail at the castle and church. The main thing was the lack of furniture to give it atmosphere in the tower as every floor felt the same
J. W.
Lovely day out if the weather's nice. They had a medieval event with archers kids love it. Great view from top of castle
R. D.
A good size brick built ‘castle’, with an interesting history.
Highly interesting moat.
No cooked food onsite - always a treat at those NT properties that have it.
No charging point(s) for electric cars.
K. B.
Excellent place for a short visit.
I. O.
Nice place to visit. Not a castle as I'm used to. More a large tower. Pretty sparse inside but some interesting features further up the tower. View from the top is marvellous.
R. P.
A fascinating historical castle with fantastic views from the top.
M. C.
Tattershall castle is so different from your usual castle. It was the first brick built castle in England possibly the UK. Well worth a visit and if you like military aviation you can watch the Typhoons taking off from nearby RAF Coningsby, from the top of the castle.
J. P.
Great place, full of history. 5 floors to explore. Staff helpful and informative.
S. H.
Plenty of steps but easy to climb. Pity can no longer get to the very top though. Really great place for kids to run about.
B. W.
Visitors that make it to the top (quite a few steps, I haven't counted them) will get rewarded with a fantastic view over Lincolnshire. Lincoln Cathedral for instance can easily be spotted by the naked eye on clear days (binoculars will be useful of course). A multimedial installation in a room on the ground floor presents the whole time line across the history of the castle. The castle itself has got a very characteristic and interesting architecture: A distinctive brick building which got preserved as we can see it today by some more or less lucky circumstances. Oh, and aircraft enthusiasts will love it for RAF Coningsby just a stone throw away (very busy, Typhoons depart/arrive frequently). Not so much of a quiet place then ;-). Free parking in the nearby car park. Don't forget to visit Holy Trinity Collegiate Church on the way back to the car!
J. A.
My first place visited since joining the national trust. This is a great castle with a brilliant view from the top. It was nice and quiet too when I visited.
s. s.
First time visit and so impressed wont be the last visit staff very wrlcoming and freindly
H. C.
Great historical castle, we visit every year, plenty for kids to do and adults alike. Fair pricing including gift aid...will visit again
M. R.
Historical brick castle restored in the 20th century by Lord Curzon, another historical figure. Plenty to see and learn, presented I usual NT excellence. Trinity church nearby also well worth a visit.
L. A.
A great afternoon out, impressive moated tower.
M. H.
Lovely day with the medieval guys giving a great show. The guys doing the armour explanation were great. Even when they are not there a good place to visit if you have not been.
B. C.
I found it very interesting.
s. c.
Great place to visit with nice views perfect for a family picnic as well as the castle and church to explore.
Rising proudly from the flat Lincolnshire fens, Tattershall Castle, with its huge Gothic fireplaces and church-like windows, was designed to impress. Built by Lord Ralph Cromwell, Treasurer of England, it was designed to show off his wealth, position and power.
The Great Tower is one of the earliest and finest surviving examples of English medieval brickwork and was saved from exportation to America by Lord Curzon of Kedleston in 1911. Take the winding staircase, wander through vast echoing chambers and walk out onto the battlements revealing the beauty of the Lincolnshire countryside.
A.
Very nice staff and very enjoyable visit for the whole family.
N. E.
Lovely day out, the castle and grounds are quite small but they often have extra activities on to keep both children and adults entertained.
T. L.
A lovely castle, I came with my husband as he hasn't been here before. The castle bought back memories as I came here when I was a child, I came with the school
D. B.
Had a great day out here, lots of rooms to walk round, loads of photo oppertunities,if your lucky you will see lots of euro fighters coming and going, and if you are extremely lucky you might get to see the world war 2 planes going overhead, all from conningsby raf station which is a stones throw from tattershall. The church does cheap coffees and refreshments, talking of church take a good look at main door....unusual but i wont give spoiler
B. R. M. N.
Love this place, the history, the views from the top. Nice book shop and coffee shop there too. We purchased a wool blanket here, worth every penny, we snuggle up in it most nights
K. W.
Great National Trust property... been here many times over the years and now my children enjoy the place... the staff are friendly. Would recommend it to anyone whoes interested in history and castles
G. T.
Played a wedding here and it was stunning. Great venue.
