Reviews of Tate Liverpool
M. E.
Visited Tate Liverpool today, not a planned visit but popped in. I was pleasantly surprised by the exhibitions .there is some really interesting artwork both pictorial and visual displays and sculptures. The Tate is ideally located if visiting Liverpool. There is so much to see and do at the Albert Dock before or after visiting Tate. Please pop in you won't be disappointed 🤷🏾♂️👍🏻
c. e.
Tate is always a little different. I am an art lover and to find a few Picassos in there was a delight. Majority of it can be viewed for free. Open and airy with good facilities and a cafe. A good thing to see whilst down on the docks
A. P.
Excellent entry that can't quite measure up to its larger London siblings Tate Modern and Tate Britain. Easy to comfortably see the permanent collection and special exhibits in a single day. Cafe was pleasant but did not have any lunch options on offer. Gift shop is interesting.
B. P.
Fantastic gallery with a good range of art and sculptures. Set in a lovely area of Liverpool near a whole bunch of other museums. They recently updated their primary collection. The gift shop is also very good, with a nice cafe. Friendly staff too. Recommended!
K. R.
One of the best art galleries i have been to and if you can't afford to pay entrance is for free (on donations), so if you can't afford to pay you can still enjoy the art, wonderful pieces. 🤍
S. L.
I thoroughly enjoyed my last trip to the Tate Liverpool, I was surprised to find such a high level of artists work on display. Salvador Dali, Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian, Paul Klee just to name a few. Well worth a trip out.
d. e.
Nice place to spend a couple of hours,,, only a short distance from the city centre too, , if you go to Albert Dock, you must visit,
K. S.
Great place to go with the family. I took my 3 children under 6 having not visited before. The staff were friendly. They have a whole floor of arts and crafts for children and young people. The kids also got a fantastic sketch book free of charge (which they loved). The cafe is lovely with art activities to keep the children entertained but a few child friendly offers would have been nice 👍🏻
V. I. M.
Amazing place and so nice to be there every time in Liverpool have to go there to see new exhibitions and the updated galleries. Most of the rooms are free and some time to pay.
The layout is very easy to go round and there are lifts to use for the three floors. Also you can buy items related to the exhibitions from the shop and if ready to eat or to drink the cafe service nice food and drink that we sure you'll enjoy
A. B.
Amazing muzeum, small but lovely! I was there with my future husband and we had a nice time there. We find it very beautiful! We are from Romania and we saw a sculpture made by our biggest artist Constantin Brancusi!
After 1 hour in the museum we decided to go to the musem coffee shop and we had the best hot chocolate !!! Totally recomand! 11/10! +plus an amazing rainbow!!! Enjoy!
J. S.
I went there just to see the open and free art expositions. The ground floor had several paintings regarding Covid-19 and the essential workers, which I thought was important and done in a good way. The other had some quite interesting and I dare say thought provoking art installations and pieces. Another aspect was that the Tate in itself as a whole seemed to be really colourful and bright even if the themes showcased were not.
I would advice people to go there if they have an hour to kill around the docs. The Tate café is also quite aesthetically pleasing with all the flags.
j. e.
A lovely hour spent wandering the collections and current exhibition. Fabulous location on the Albert Dock.
L. S. B.
This place is food for the soul. Small but perfectly formed, you can get round it quite quickly (about an hour) or take as long as you like taking in all the amazing artwork - all for free. The artwork in the permanent galleries does change, so you can keep going back and find something new to see. There is usually one exhibition on that you have to pay to see. It is wheelchair/pushchair accessible.
M. A.
Nice facilities by the dock. Tate always has different exhibits and free of charge.
J. “. P.
Loved our afternoon seeing Lucian Freud's artwork. Exploring the other exhibitions and enjoying coffee afterwards.
R. T.
Wonderful gallery with some great artwork, my 9yo daughter loved it, well worth a visit
W. N.
A wonderful space with some interesting artworks. Good concise descriptions next to the works which was invaluable for me as some of them would otherwise have been rather puzzling. And it’s free !
I felt a little pressured into making a donation by the staff which doesn’t seem right.
P. G. C.
Stunning exhibitions. The place is very well located, with very nice sea views. It's not too big but well organized and the shop although it's too pricey has really good stuff.
A. J. H.
Booked to see the Don McCullin exhibition, and it was amazing. The sheer quantity of his work on show is breathtaking, and it’s content is just staggering, stunning, poignant and harrowing in fairly equal measure. A must for anyone who is interested in his work, the genre or just want to see the gritty reality of life on this planet for so many people.
C. C. (.
Tate gallery interesting looking at different types of art and their stories behind them.
G. M.
An excellent museum of modern art, with a few exhibitions on show every time. Two floors were free of charge showing a wide collection of paintings and sculpturen of various artists. Every exhibit is well documented.
M. R.
I've been here in the past and it's been fascinating. Not today sadly. Interesting enough and it's free so always worth a pop in to give yourselves a culture boost. Gently recommended.
T. L.
Unfortunately, I was way too early to enter Tate Liverpool, however I did make some photographs of the exterior. I have been before and if you are visiting the Liverpool waterfront or the Royal Albert Dock I recommend this as worthy of a visit.
A. M.
Tate Gallery where most of the exhibits are free to visit. Exhibits are displayed over multiple floors, grouped by collections, and includes both art and craft. Exhibitions change over time and you can check out what's currently exhibiting on their website.
Given the diversity of art, different exhibitions may or may not appeal to different individuals. Personally, I found I enjoyed some whilst others I quickly passed through.
S. R.
Great gallery if you’re into modern art. Not too busy compared to it’s London counterparts. Nice cafe overlooking the docks, although no views of the Mersey.
R. R.
Great to see that London doesn’t get all the good stuff! This is a fabulous gallery and well worth a visit (free entry so just make sure you make a donation so we keep it in the north!)
We were there for the Keith Haring exhibition (entry extra but worth it) which was equally beautiful and moving.
E. R.
Always lots to see, staff are always very chatty and informative. Keith Haring exhibit is beautifully curated and very powerful! Some fun exhibits on. I suggest if you are between 16 and 25 to get a Tate collective card as this gets you discount in the shop and cafe. You also receieve cheaper tickets for exhibitions!!
R. W.
Loved it here. The art work and displays were surprisingly good and because of the time of year it was quite quiet so we had full reign of the place. Well worth a visit.
H. f. H.
Loved the swirly psychedelic floors – had to have a little lie down in the search of an arty 1960’s themed shot, check out the eternally reflecting mirror box and pose in front of a neon hammer. Colourful and fun.
R. R.
🌈Free art gallery and museum, with a charge for exhibitions 📌largest gallery of modern and contemporary art outside London 📌displays work from the TATE collection
C. M.
Fantastic museum not up to the standards of the Tate in London but still has some great pieces of work. Most of the exhibits are free of charge but they do have a few floors of paid exhibitions.
Located in the beautiful Albert sock on the bank of the river Mersey this is a must place to visit while in Liverpool. I would recommend going in the morning as it’s a little quieter.
G. H.
Liverpool, not your first thought for a bit of culture. But you would be wrong and the Tate says so with a hammer.
Just visited for the Keith Haring expo (utter genius) but the rest of the Gallery was inventive, well loved and fresh. Really worth a visit and the cafe was great value. Helpful and knowledgeable staff.
P.
Well organised.
You book a time online and download your ticket to your phone which is then scanned upon entry.
The route around the building is explained to you and there are clear markings on the floor to take you around the exhibitions.
And i thought some of the exhibits were great. Couldn't help photographing a Butlins scene that reminded me of childhood holidays.
Not sure it takes as long to get around them all as some visitors stated...maybe I am simply not as interested in some pieces of art as others.
Well worth a visit.
R. H.
Admission is free and let me tell you, you get your money's worth. Interesting exhibits, helpful staff, gorgeous location. Full day out to explore the docks
I.
Great art venue for a couple of hours. Really enjoyed the mix of contemporary and permanent exhibitions. Loved the soul at the diner afterwards
A. V.
Great gallery. There are 5 floors with different expositions. On the ground floor there is also a shop where you can buy some books published by TATE, postcards and stationery.
C.
Love the Tate Liverpool. A fun and exciting gallery with a great selection of exhibits. We were visiting Liverpool particularly to visit the Tate and see the Keith Harring exhibition that month. The colour exhibition was a cheeky bonus and we also went round some of the regular art works. Super impressed with the Keith Harring exhibition for the value of money, I literally thought it would never end! I had no idea there was so much space and so many rooms. Very interesting exhibition. The shop had a small range of stuff from the exhibitions which I did make a fee little purchases from.
J. R.
Great place to spend some time relaxing and nice cafe. We'll worth a visit.
M. F.
Tate in Liverpool, on Albert Dock. Some free galleries with interesting stuff, regularly changing, and generally a paid for show of more topical interest. Nice surroundings, usually gift shop and café, but can get V busy. Make a donation, keep the Tate in Liverpool.
S. M.
This is a beautiful art gallery. I saw paintings, sculpture, social art, short films and what not. And the best of all, it's free!!
I would recommend to go and check the place, is worth your time!
A. R.
I love it here.
Only went to the free exhibitions this time but will come back again soon and explore the others.
Was really relaxing to go round the galleries after all the chaos everyone has endured.
It was clean, tidy, friendly and informative staff and great little gift shop.
J. G.
An amazing place for modern art. The Lucien Freud exhibition was put together in an interesting way. Love the gallery.
S.
Free to enter, great for Art lovers, especially modern art. Book ahead to ensure quick entry, over 3 floors, shop and café on site
D. N.
Fantastic gallery!
A must for any visit to Liverpool.
Free entry to the first three floors of permanent collections, with the top floor reserved for a changing programme of paid exhibitions.
Given this gallery is a Tate gallery, it has access to a stellar line up of artists & famous pieces, so you will see landmark pieces from the greatest artists of all time.
C. D.
The Tate is a brand that is also a landmark amongst art lovers in London and Liverpool. Now this area is a classical venue, found amongst historic tall ships and marine visitors to the Albert docks. The cafe adjacent is well run and to a high standard.
J. M.
What's not to like? Free museum (at least right now), free lockers, beautiful art display, children friendly museum! A must in Liverpool! Plus in an area worth walking.
H. R.
Nice place for a day out and lovely view's of sea, looking at docks.
R.
I love it here but be warned if you go in winter wear removalable layers or dress lightly. To keep the art in ideal condition they have the heating on high which is okay (obviously they need to do this) but if you're sensitive to heat like me (low blood pressure) you are in for a bad time if you've dressed for the outside weather conditions, you'll regret your coat and jumper and end up feeling sick and dizzy.
It's 100% my own fault but a handy warning for anyone else who is in the same boat.
Second tip is to book in advance to skip the queue - even if you want a free ticket the line gets pretty long due to the covid measures.
Otherwise it's a great place to visit there's lots of art to see even if it's just for the free entry. Easy to while away a few hours and there's a nice friendly atmosphere. Absolutely fab place for people watching too and the location is stunning.
Great place to visit especially if you are on your own. It's a lovely chilled day out.
C. W.
It's so much things to see in Liverpool.....especially have been to Tate Liverpool and the the museum of Liverpool where just close by plus you will know about little bit stories of Beatels as well......We had a great day here...hope everyone will visit this beautiful place soon....see you guys here soon.
S.
Great gallery with good use of the relatively limited space. Excellent Keith Hering exhibition which was worth paying for and the Op art free exhibit was brilliant.
p. m.
Epic exhibition encompassing the whole top floor of the building. Pace yourselves. Well worth it.
k. n.
Great place for a break. Coffee is average but the tea is nice. A bit higher price than usual. Colourful buntings an flags adorned the ceiling creating a nice ambience.
A. S.
Great for all the family
C. W.
Very nice breakfast. Staff were exceptionally helpful.
L. S.
Great little Tate, with a couple of pairs exhibitions and lots of work to also see for free. More modern than traditional art. Some nice sculptures. Usual films in the gift shop. Cosy, warm and relaxed cafe with great coffee. Near to the maritime museum and slavery museum. Tasteful Christmas lighting, and right in the centre of the wharf, so surrounded by water and boats of all shapes and sizes. A cross between Brixham and Southwark.
G. S.
Don McCullin show is absolutely amazing. The greatest conflict photographer ever.
J. L.
A smaller gallery but amazing considering half is free.
A. R.
Spent a happy couple of hours visiting Tate Liverpool. The staff were really enthusiastic and friendly. Two of them spent several minutes digging out details of an exhibition I had visited there almost 10 years ago and the attendant in the main exhibition gave us a personal tour with lots of insights into the art.
I’ve left a star off due to its size which is a little small if you want to spend significant time there. However it is full of interesting art and free to enter which is fantastic!
R. L.
Splendid collections. The Roy Lichtenstein and kens collection were superb; manageable size, quality and variety. Not everything else was to my taste but it would be a bland collection that appealed universally. The space, lighting and citation are excellent.
C. H.
Great gallery. Well organised and well laid out. It can be a little busy but it’s free and worth the wait.
The art work ranges in median and size so there is always something for everyone.
The gift shop is good and well priced.
The toilets are clean. Lockers are available too.
J. T.
Very interesting artworks and art installations. May not be everyone's cup of tea as a lot of it is quite abstract.
Had to pre book using the museums of Liverpool website.
A. “. D.
Nice little find. Food was outstanding and tasty. Price was very reasonable and a nice view.
S. B.
Good gallery with some nice surprises. Lots of space so social distancing isn't ever an issue.
A. P.
Always come away from Tate Liverpool a little underwhelmed. Probably being harsh, but I always get the feeling they are missing a trick or two (without knowing why). Loved the Opart exhibition though.
K. G.
Went to the Freud exhibition which was beautifully staged and was remarkable in the collection on show. It also gives a wide range of information on the man and how his different life experiences impacted on his work. You may leave not really liking Freud the man but you will appreciate Freud the artist.
E. C.
A free modern art gallery in the Royal Albert Docks, over several floors. Bags are discouraged inside the gallery, but there is a free to use locker room in the basement
E. P.
Really enjoyed the exhibitions. Use the free audio-guide app to know more about some of the paintings! The whole area of Albert Docks are great.
D. I.
In fact the setting is even more spectacular than a London Tate. Remember to visit the other two museums nearby!
A. D.
Great for wheelchair users as plenty of staff to open doors, accessible toilets and lovely flat floors. Not as much art as the London one, but definitely worth a visit.
k.
Nicely lit up at night
J. J.
Love this gallery. There's a remarkable amount to see with the changing exhibitions, and the permanent collection is used well to make you think.
Cafe is normally a good option, but they don't have a chef at present (oct 21), so check beforehand if you were planning to eat a meal there.
S. T. G.
Overall a good museum but too modern art for me. Some things are really cool tho. Situated on the shore and is a nice walk there and around.
J. E.
The Albert Docks are a revelation in themselves. But the most impressive location within the Docks is theTate. Tate Liverpool is an art gallery and museum in Merseyside, England, and part of Tate, along with Tate St Ives, Cornwall, Tate Britain, London, and Tate Modern, London.
Tate Liverpool was created to display work from the Tate Collection which comprises the national collection of British art from the year 1500 to the present day, and international modern art.

Wonderful gallery, fascinating exhibits, free to enter, not too large so easy to go around in a few hours
D.
Great gallery and exhibition of William Blake and Tracey Emin. Returned to see the amazing Keith Haring exhibition.
S. T.
Great, saw some ships and stuff!
M. P.
A wonderful way to spend a few hours. The free exhibitions were brilliantly put together and genuinely thought-provoking, and the family activities were fantastic, too. The kids had a brilliant time creating their own little artworks, and the staff were very kind and helpful - clearly a huge amount of effort had gone into the whole thing.
L. W.
Had a great time. Really taken by the Don McCullin exhibition, quite a number of powerful images here. Well worth the visit. Be prepared for some tough themes. Made me angry that this stuff is STILL going on. Quite a number of images of children I found difficult to look at.... Also visited the Louise Bourgeois exhibition. It was interesting, some nice prints in here and quirky sculptures. Got a book in the gift shop. Bit pricey in there... £18.50 for a Guerrilla Girls mug? Is it for Champagne? 😲🤷🏻♀️
B. W.
Awesome environment. It's very sma however. They have a paid exhibition on the top 2 floors. It's a bit much for such a small space. They need more pieces and a larger venue. However, you can still see Picasso and Dali here. Inspiring!
b. h.
I'm not into art at all but found a fair amount of interesting stuff here, mostly optical illusions but more traditional items too. DO take opportunity to read the art notes on the wall, some I would have dismissed without knowing the thought behind them. The museum is free (donation recommended, the free side means if your not sure you can look around and then pay if you did take a lot in). There was a kids room in which they could Rip stuff off walls and try smd place them back correctly, as well as a great interactive green screen
T. B.
Very helpful staff. Free entry. Good gift shop
L. H.
Overall great gallery. Free entry to permanent collections and temporary exhibition space. Fee for special exhibitions. Recently visited the bus installation by Sol Calero. Excellent. Visited the Keith Haring exhibition. Gorgeous, well curated, the vibe in the space was really authentic. Showcased a lot of works I'd never seen before, expanded my view of his work. I thought it did a great job of capturing his activism and the gravity and destruction of the aids crisis. Great exhibition.
K. W.
Galley of all kids of wonderful things. Art gallor. Free entry and such a vast space to explore. Relaxing and chilled atmosphere and the staff are very pleasant and helpful.
I. C.
The good - free.
As one might expect decidedly weird.
It's an interesting enough way to pass an hour. One or two of the optical illusions were actually pretty good. The rest of it would probably be filed under odd, but mind you what does one expect with modern art.
Have rated 3 star as not my thing, reasonable experience, and I appreciated not having to pay (save for an exhibit on the top floor which was shut anyway, looking through the glass I don't think we missed too much anyway).
There's also the Liverpool Museum a short walk from here (also free).
Note the lack of a typo in the description below - artist's sh!t not the other way around.
R. H.
Another super trip to the tate the ongoing collections are always a treat somthing for everybody with easy to understand signs which explain the work to non art historians the ongoing collections are far superior to what is on offer in London also there is a free show of the artist Louise bourgoiuse at present loved it xx
G. M.
We visited an exhibition, and the curators talk was very helpful. The artwork was excellent. Well worth a visit.
A. J. E.
The Keith Haring exhibition has an amazingly collection of his work cataloging a vast selection of his work a must see view
E. K.
I visited to see the Don MacCullin exhibition. I had trouble trying to get a ticket as the computer system was not working but the receptionist on ticket sales was extremely helpful. The exhibition was well worth the effort. The photos were well laid out with clear explanations. A brilliant, heart rending and thought provoking exhibition.
D. S.
Interesting gallery. The Lucien Freud exhibition was a little disappointing, not enough of his bigger canvases. But worth a visit.
J. B.
If you like modern art this place is perfect for you. After visiting I found I dont like moden art so this place is not for me again.
A box of water is not really art to me.
Honestly my own opinion of the art is the only reason for 3 stars, when it comes to the staff they are amazing and helpful.
G. G.
It was a bit boring and not really that much art on display I visited the walker art gallery in Liverpool on the same day and I thought the walker art gallery was a lot better with a much wider range of art on display from both contemporary and historical artists.
g. c.
Absolutely love going to the tate always something going on and also very educational if you like art.
C. S.
Some highly regarded world famous artists work on view here albeit not an extensive range. That said, exhibitions can be outstanding. Worth visiting.
i.
Spent a lot of time here on my visit into the city. Had a lot of great work out on display and a super cool cafe!
P. N.
A great space for new artists as well as more main stream ones, I was there recently to see the Roy Lichtenstein exhibition including an interesting video on how restorers were cleaning his paintings. Tate Liverpool is a part of Albert Docks lying on the side of the River Mersey; It has a Café and gift shop. This visit means I have been to Tate: Liverpool, St. Ives, Modern and the original one.
B. W.
Great exhibitions in a great location. Well worth a visit. While we were there Tracy Emin's bed was being exhibited with a lecturer to analyse.
Very slow service in the attached Museum cafe but plenty of other well priced eateries very close by.
H. B.
Disappointed with Tate Liverpool , perhaps it was the exhibits but it just wasn't the best experience although staff were nice and friendly
M. S.
Great visit to the Tate, had a look round during a short visit to Liverpool. There are many exhibitions within and the building has fantastic accessibility. It's right by the docks and has a donation entry fee, so you can give whatever you can afford. Although some of the art was a little lost on me, there is something for everyone. There are toilets as well as beers and restaurants nearby if you fancy some food after all the art.
L.
Great gallery. Friendly staff. Amazing exhibitions .
C. W.
Some good work. If you don't like abstract art this isn't the place for you. Thought it would be bigger.
S. T.
Great experience! Wonderful variety of exhibitions on, the Warhol pieces and Constellation exhbition is great. Loved the rainbow floor room! Extremely friendly gallery attendant who have no problem answering questions or showing you around
E. F.
such a cool art museum seen a lot of people getting cool pictures & stuff... when we took a picture a member of staff came up to us saying turn the flash off in a rude way (I’m not too sure why as they was no one there in the room but us) & I heard a snide comment before hand saying like “it’s not a photo shoot” just because we was getting a picture it made me feel uncomfortable it’s a good museum but all of the staff were really rude & not friendly whatsoever
B. F.
Wonderful museum. Free to enter with many great exhibits. The surrounding docks have great sculptures and artwork, too.
P. J.
The Keith Haring exhibition is probably the most impressive of all of the Tates 2019 offerings.
R.
Love these repurposing of dock buildings.
Now the whole area is a happening place. Shops, museums, cafes.
Free WiFi here. Wonderful.
L. M.
Inspiring, informative, educational, uplifting and a must go see. Ideal for families or for a solo visit. Perfect for groups of students with activities available for learning opportunities. Definitely worth a visit!
D. H.
Travelled up from Bristol to see the Keith Haring exhibition. It was absolutely fantastic, both the experience and the curation of pieces. We were there for so much longer than expected.
Thank you Tate for such a great trip that was worth all that driving. Also super impressed with the things available in the gift shop!
Accessibility wise there were chairs and places to sit available for those who can't stand for long and great access overall for wheelchairs.
S. R.
Great Art from Duchamp, Picasso, Warhol, Baselitz and many more. Nice cafe. Nice views of the Mersey and surrounding buildings too. Highly recommended.
J. G.
Beyond fabulous experience & I loved the Lucian Freud exhibition. Nice cafeteria & great coffee.
D. D.
Whenever we have been there has also been a different exhibit on. Every one really unique. Well worth a visit
S. C.
I'm not very into modern art, but decided to visit the tate. Very well presented art works. Very up to date work on display in relation to covid and how it has affected people's lives and jobs. I spent around an hour looking around. Really worth visiting.
P. H.
Visited the superb Don McCullin exhibition. Well laid out over many halls. Catalogue was reasonably priced at £25. Exhibition closes Saturday September 5 so two days left at time of posting.
A. T.
The artwork was not to my taste but other people seemed to be enjoying it. Not many exhibits on display, surely you use the quantity and quality of the free display to make people want to spend money on the pay per view exhibition.
T. F.
Quite small, compared to Modern, but probably the same size as Tate Britain. Went for the Keith Haring exhibition and loved it. The exhibitions were interesting, mainly modern art
s. m.
Had a brilliant day out, weather was good and the choice was yours whether to wear your face mask walking around or not. It had to be worn if you went in the shops bars cafes till you are seated. Overall a visit to the Royal Albert Dock is well worth it. Family had a very good time
k.
Great gallery. Me and my kids really enjoyed all exhibitions. Lovely place. Picasso, Braque, Rodin...
J.
Beautiful
t.
Haring exhibition was great, give yourself at least 90 minutes though. Solid gallery, nice to see Tate up north.
J. S.
Quite a sophisticated Art Gallery, with exhibitions challenging one's own mind. Very rewarding.
J. K.
The exhibitions are considered and set out well. Great space to explore.
P. R.
Another great Tate experience. Great displays of art and to top it off a nice cafe in the ground floor. Definitely worth calling in here to see the new exhibitions.
W. L.
A really cool place. You can make cool badges and on one floor there are loads of optical illusions.
T. N. G.
A well organized and finely curated gallery. Relevant works, from interesting artists.
I. M.
An amazing and diversified venue allowing the uninitiated to experience contemporary culture relevant to our modern society. Mostly free access with interactive workshops con's set setting aside time for the experience.not high brow..very relevant
H.
I went specifically to see the Keith Haring exhibit on til November. It was stunning, learnt so much about his activism and tragically short life. Will only share one picture otherwise its basically a spoiler.
K. M.
Nice, varied range of collections available to view for free, as well as the private collections which were available for a fee or free to members. Easy to navigate, I didn't book ahead (temporary Covid measures) but the staff were really welcoming and sorted my admission.
A. D. J.
Modern art. Nice toilets. What more could you ask? Bring headphones so you don't have to listen to people constantly saying 'that's not art' or 'I could do better than that'. Quite annoying. That said, my five year old made this there... (see photo). He now has a residency. ;-)
J. P.
Great art. Beautiful place. Friendly for everyone.
G. S.
Loved the recent Harring exhibition and the initiative to offer £5 tickets to under 25s for this is great! The permanent collection is displayed well. Overall a great place to visit!
R. H.
Interesting exhibits in the middle of Liverpool Dock.
m. l.
Some fascinating conversation with our children following our visit. Very friendly staff and helpful, thank you
C.
Lovely space for displaying art, friendly helpful staff. Very accessible for wheelchair users. The only drawback was the prices in the gift shop were very high.
R. R.
Nice little modern art gallery. There are 3 floots to visit. The first 2 are opened to the public and display various art pieces and a Roy Lichtenstein exhibit (nov 2017). The 2nd floor is accessible for a fee and is generally about one theme. But overall it is what modern art is but the building is well located and easy to walk around

Great music, well mixed drinks with great smoked Old Fashioned and table magic. Was considering not posting a review as it's popular enough and I would be disappointed to find it had no space when I turned up!!
P. C.
only went to the coffee shop this time...nice coffee ,choices of food, breakfast/ brunch/lunch menus...views of Albert dock..Tate itself has large galleries, (seemingly empty,) that really make you look at the object or painting on display... I went to see an exhibition when I suddenly found myself looking at a gilt framed Lowry painting...is this irony I thought ...........or controversial........:)
H. C.
Really enjoyed their current exhibition. Lovely couple of hours and fab kids explorer packs free in reception. Well worth picking up for my 4 yr old.
G. B.
Lucian Freud Exhibition worth a visit if, like me you are a fan.
K. W.
Very interesting place to visit and learn what we consider celebrated arts
D. D.
So Tate Liverpool is easy to get to in Albert Dock Liverpool which is worth a visit in itself. It’s easy and for the most part free to enter. The problem is whether you engage with the particular exhibits. I didn’t. Only a small part of the standing collection (which is better in my view) can be seen - which is a shame. Currently few enforced covid measures as per English Gov advice.
J. M.
Great museum. The temporary exhibitions are always very interesting. Nice place for families
C. H.
Good thought-provoking exhibition featuring Egon Schiele and Laura Goodman. Also participating in the Liverpool biennial with a colourful room full of artificial plants and primitive straw mannequins with coloured ribbons in a Maypole style arrangement.
M. M.
I love Tate Liverpool and spent many college days here. I feel the entrance fee for Freud is a bit steep though, considering it’s only half a room and not the full floor. Bit disappointing.
J. a.
Free!! In the lovely albert docks, which is worth walking around and near the other free museums....musuem of liverpool is exceptional and the maritime museum is good too, we stayed 2 days and didn't have time to get around all the museums in liverpool!. There's a good cafe and shop ; some interesting artwork...some of it does open your mind a little bit...makes you think, was pleased to see a Lowry here...went to see the infamous unmade bed ..and stayed longer than I thought we would, 9 and 14 year old were more interested than I thought they would be, they took some photos and 9 year old played in the children's area for quite a while
y. k.
A lot of free exhibition to see , highly recommend a visit.
I. M.
The displays were very good and well put together and hung. Plenty of room too. The only issue for me was the lack of artwork on the day, I did anticipate a little more.
D. S.
Lovely tiny local Tate museum with lots of masterpieces.
I. W.
Worth a visit if your in the city. Plenty on free exhibitions
P. C.
Not the biggest gallery, but plenty of free exhibitions with lots of really interesting pieces. Definitely worth spending a couple of hours here.
A.
Recently went to see Egon Schiele and Francesca Woodman exhibition. Definitely worth a visit for any art lover and fan of Schiele .Curated focusing on both of their portraiture work , (Francescas being photography). Highly recommended !
A. A. B.
I don't like modern art, but is a beautiful place.
J. Q.
I recommend taking the tour, which is very interesting. The first and top floors have temporary exhibitions. The entrance to the permanent collection is for free, while special exhibitions at the top floor require paid tickets.
J. S.
Even there are great people
S. R.
Great Art from Duchamp, Picasso, Warhol, Baselitz and many more. Nice cafe. Nice views of the Mersey and surrounding buildings too. Highly recommended.
E. F.
such a cool art museum seen a lot of people getting cool pictures & stuff... when we took a picture a member of staff came up to us saying turn the flash off in a rude way (I’m not too sure why as they was no one there in the room but us) & …
s. b.
Amazing place. Well set out over 5 floors lots of sanitizes around. People to ask questions. All for free
R. C.
Missed the Keith Haringey exhibition but still a great place to visit
R. H.
Another super trip to the tate the ongoing collections are always a treat somthing for everybody with easy to understand signs which explain the work to non art historians the ongoing collections are far superior to what is on offer in London also there is a free show of the artist Louise bourgoiuse at present loved it xx
P. C.
Not the biggest gallery, but plenty of free exhibitions with lots of really interesting pieces. Definitely worth spending a couple of hours here.
E. M.
First time at Tate Liverpool for the Yves Klein exhibition. V helpful and knowledgeable curator. Will visit again with more time to spend there.
R.
An acquired taste, will not suit all. But interesting.
S.
Amazing gallery! Well worth a visit
A. G.
Nice couscous tower
J. C.
Excellent staff, wonderful environment, and delicious filter coffee
K. N.
Wonderful gallery in a converted warehouse next to Liverpool’s old docks, has good café and excellent access for all. Keith Haring exhibition was fascinating.
j. M.
Saw Lucien Freud exhibition plus others. Some thought provocing works by other artists in different mediums. Reasonable entrance fee . Somewhere for a snack and WC facilities
a. w.
Had a couple of hours looking at exhibits. Good if you are into art. Nice place.
P. B.
Really great. Well laid out and the staff were very helpful. I even managed to recognise some of the exhibitions.
k. a.
Love walking round looking at the art, even if most of it is rubbish
B. G.
We visited during the 2020 Coronavirus crisis and found the whole experience very enjoyable. We booked a timed slot online, were admitted in time and had plenty of space to enjoy the exhibits.
From a visitor's standpoint of view, our visit was more enjoyable than it would have been in normal times except for the face covering and foggy glasses.
H. C.
Never get tired of visiting this place. Beautiful art well exhibited. Great gift shop.
M. A.
My review it’s on the coffee shop only they need to improve their coffee
J. F.
Fabulous exhibitions. I saw the Don McCullin photographic exhibition this time which was amazing. He captures moments in time of fighting and wars across the world and shows the human cost.
E. M.
First time at Tate Liverpool for the Yves Klein exhibition. V helpful and knowledgeable curator. Will visit again with more time to spend there.
S. L.
Love this Tate!
Perfect size. I find the London Tates so big but this is a nicer smaller focused collection. Beautiful location too. Friendly staff and great social distancing measures in place. Pre-book tickets required.
There were some amazing Miro and Dali pieces when I was here 👌🏻
J. Q.
Can't beat the Tate modern. Even if you try to put up a fight at closing time the staff always have the upper hand and throw me out. They put up a good fight. Got to give them that. The art is okay too.
M. G.
Visited the Don MCullin photographic exhibition. Graphic gruesome and sad. Pictures taken from all over the world Inc Liverpool. Spanning 6 decades of his life. Brilliant. Well worth a visit. Extended til 2nd Sept 2021.
P. R.
Love the Tate Gallery, but some of the art is.....strange.
I. P.
I like the art, a bit strange but good. Cafe, less so
M. Z.
Not many famous artworks, but plenty of contemporary art
V. S.
An eclectic mix of art on display currently. The gallery is well laid out and the curators knowledgeable. A great cafe as well. Definitely worth a visit.
M. L.
The gallery has an interesting selection of pictures, installations and sculptures. Unfortunately, due to covid, some of the interactive installations were not in operation. We enjoyed wandering through the gallery and thought there was something of interest for all ages. The shop is well worth a visit and we went away with an excellent book of the paintings of Salvador Dali. Tickets currently need to be booked beforehand.
H. M.
We visited in 2017 so the installations will probably be different.
I really loved this Tate.
Good size
Overlooking waterfront
Lots to look at
Gift shop
Beside other establishments to dine & drink etc
If you're in Liverpool I would say it's definitely worth a visit, especially if you enjoy art.
J. B.
Fantastic place. Free entry for 3 floors (have to pay for the exhibition on the last floor). Took us about 1,5h to take in the breathtaking works (they even have Picasso and Dali!) and another half an hour for the surprisingly well equipped gallery shop - books, jewelry an much more - i didn't expect to get birthday gifts for two friends there! Can't wait to come back.
Oh, and their cafe has some yummy food, I recommend the vegan gnocchi!
A. t.
Experience it for yourself. Housed in the Dock warehouse its free to go in but a donation request for £5 is kind of optional. I saw the closed exhibition of Lucian Froid work for the £9 entry fee and thought it was worth it.
K.
Current exhibitions were not that exciting but good enough.
A. P.
I have seen one of the best exhibitions pf yves klein here! Perfect done exhibition of Edward Krasinski - absolutely stunning!
R. C.
It's amazing Museum rise on the docks in Liverpool
A. C.
Nice place, some fairly abstract artists mixed with a couple of rockstars. Shame about the extra £10 for the Freud exhibition, but guess they have to make some pesos!
R. C.
Missed the Keith Haringey exhibition but still a great place to visit
B. N.
Always enjoy Tate, the Freud exhibition was excellent
A. C.
The art and it's interruption was above my understanding of what is was all about.
The world has moved on I guess ,but art is what you see before you not the concept of the mind of the artist in his thinking but what is laid on paint or oils to canvas.
I am an art lover.
J. 7.
Fantastic visit - I stood next to a Picasso!
Some exhibits free, some were chargeable well worth the visit.
b. b.
A great place to go for a visit very friendly and the art is amazing
M.
Visited some amazing exhibitions. Loved it.
V. S.
Cute place to go for an hour or two.
L. F.
Been to see Lucien Freud exhibition at Tate Liverpool and a bite to eat in the cafe. Lovely morning. Helpful staff. Great gallery.
g. s.
I went for the Don McCullin exhibition and I was very impressed, mostly by the work displayed, but the gallery itself was well organised and as it should be.
N. R.
Took some time out to visit and so glad i did , staff very helpful and all the exhibits were interesting and well set out . Nice chill place to step into from the buzz of Albert Dock
p. b.
Great location, interesting exhibits, friendly staff.
C. T.
Free to visit and some great exhibitions which are reasonably priced. Covid precautions are well done and the location is great. A must visit if you are in Liverpool.
A. N.
Friendly, well curated and close enough to the action.
J. B.
Second visit. Not a huge collection of art work, and at present timed entry.
I. K.
Very friendly staff serving some Picassos, Matisse's and delli cappuccino, not to be missed if in Liverpool
A. A.
amazing place, beautiful view and spirit
C. S.
As a usually all the the Tate Galleries in UK are the best and the most interesting places about art collections. Great place.
M. S.
Small gallery with a few unusual artists. Avant Garde, too much so for me, but if it's your thing and you have a half-hour to spare, give it a whirl.
K. W.
Amazing place ,must see ,staff very helpful and informative
S. B.
Okay a glimpse of the unusual and sometimes absurd - it's good but it just needs to connect a bit more with the public in my opinion perhaps a little more interactive in places.
R. J.
Always enjoy looking at art I don't understand or sometimes makes me laugh followed by a strong coffee and an organic muffin.
V. P.
Not too much to see. Main exhibition free. Very good coffee and souvenir shop.
J. B.
Wonderful Keith Haring exhibition and their Pop Art gallery is great. I like the way they make connections between the art they have in their permanent displays. It's not all to my taste but then you go to an art gallery to be challenged not just comforted. It's in a great location to in the Albert Docks so lots around there to do also
H. C.
Best place to work at!
E. W.
Not my cup of tea. But Intresting to see once. Friendly staff.
A. D.
Great location, great space and great art.
S. L.
I liked this museum.. there is a free entrance as others english museums
I have seen the temporary exposition of Roy Lichtenstein.. amazing paintings
G. M.
A must-see place in its picturesque waterside setting, Tate Liverpool never disappoints either with its permanent exhibitions or indeed its current offering from the renowned war- turned- landscape photographer Don McCullin.
K. J.
Great viewings, free to get in and easy enough to pre book before going in, it was a good way to pass time before me and my partner had to get the train back home !
B. C. R.
Scone with clotted cream and a pot of jam plus a cup of tea! Magic! Nice service. Clean, Quiet. Friendly. Perfect!! Deserves 6 stars.
L. Q.
Love this place. Amazing collection outside of London.
F. M.
A marvellous place, full of various art styles. Although only a proportion of the art was to my personal taste the rest was both interesting and challenging. Excellent gift shop and café. Highly recommend.
J. G.
🌈Free craftsmanship display and historical center, with a charge for presentations 📌largest exhibition of current and contemporary workmanship outside London 📌displays work from the TATE assortment
A. D.
I lived in a house in Liverpool that was demolished due to the slum clearance program in the early 1970s. Whilst those photographs resonated personally and stimulated memories Don's other subject matter relating to war, poverty, deprevation and death made me stop, think and sometimes cry. Such honest no nonsense wall notes focused my mind and transported me spiritually to the places the photographer had visited. Please don't miss this exhibition.
B. F.
This is a mixed review. I found the Tate Art Museum a bit of a letdown. To be fair though, they only had two floors open due to either renovating or redoing their other exhibitions. However the Tate Restaurant was great! We ate breakfast there twice and used it as a refuge from the icy weather while we sippied endless cups of tea and coffee. Their food is simple, fuss free and delicious. My children even asked for a second egg and bap roll at their first breakfast there, not because they were still hungry, just because it was delicious. For that order the staff were extra accommodating and helped us even though breakfast orders had finished 15 or so minutes earlier. Big windows so you can watch the passers-by. Clean bathroom and nice little arty shop attached. Place your orders at the counter, they will deliver to your table. This place really did have a nice energy about it and can be counted on for good food and service.
s. b.
Amazing place. Well set out over 5 floors lots of sanitizes around. People to ask questions. All for free
S.
Amazing gallery! Well worth a visit
T. R.
Some nice pieces, the shops okay and the café tables have trays of coffee cups yet to be cleared.
D. R.
Great place to enjoy art, friendly staff always willing to engage with you about a piece of art work on display.
A. R.
Great to see that London doesn’t get all the good stuff! This is a fabulous gallery and well worth a visit (free entry so just make sure you make a donation so we keep it in the north!)
We were there for the Keith Haring exhibition (entry extra but worth it) which was equally beautiful and moving.
D. C.
Not huge but has nice pieces and it is well curated.
The floor on the first floor is really fun.
G. Y.
Very nice but don't expect to visit the Tate London.
R. B.
Free exhibitions available and additional ones for a fee. Nice to drop on for an hour and soak in some culture and have an auld think.
S. H.
Terrific gallery spread across 4 floors that's free to get into. Several exhibitions that change regularly so merits repeated visits. Some exhibitions may charge. Great for all the family. Loved it.
S. K.
Great experience and really good artist selection. Highly recommended it!
m. B.
Lovely visit to the Tate, fab display and tribute to the NHS , just a little disappointed there wasn't more to see in the free display. Well worth a visit though .
F. S.
I always enjoy coming here! It's smaller than the Tate Britain or Modern, but perfect for a half day visit with 2 floors of permanent collection and 2 of temporary special exhibitions. Shop, cafe and helpdesk on the ground floor. Free lockers on the basement. Friendly and helpful staff.
P. C.
If you love art, it's amazing.
A. L.
Not greatly impressed with the collection when I visited. Just missed the Haring exhibition that would have been interesting. Different strokes for different folks I guess but the collection overall didn't do it for me. The building amenities etc were fine.
s.
A varied selection, well thought out. Worth checking if there is a talk on, I caught the tail end of one which really brought home the concept and ideas of the artist which I then found myself applying to others.
The staff were friendly and set out accessible and lighting and galleries done well.
Just to note, in places there was a shortage of sitting areas (an issue for those who fatigue or older people).
b. b.
Visit The Tate on a regular basis. Don't always take in the special exhibitions as some don't appeal to me. But can reccommend taking in one just for the experience. The rest of the gallery has different exhibitions going on throughout the year that are free. These are great to go and see, the variety of art on display is fantastic. If you are in the area please take time and visit.
S. M.
Thought provoking work. Hosting a Picasso at the moment
I. V.
Just went there to see the photo exhibition of don mccullin great photographer, from his earliest photos of his own area in London to different areas of conflict in this country or around the world, superb photography, loved it,
j. c.
Open, safe exciting display in amazing venue. Staff really helpful and knowledgeable
A. G.
Fantastic gallery, very accessible. The cafe was overpriced and not very good - although I'm not a fan of trad British fare. I say have lunch elsewhere but don't miss the Tate if you're visiting Liverpool. I'll go back again when I'm there, although my favourite museum/ gallery is Walker Art Gallery (just because I prefer Victorian Art.
The gift shop was decent but a tad overpriced, however remember that by buying from the place itself helps them out and allows them to keep up the high standard.
C. D.
Interesting gallery, I'm sure I'm probably very naive but didn't really appreciate the more modern pieces. Some really nice more traditional pieces of art though. Most of the gallery was closed, presumably for preparing new artwork, but visit was cut quite short.
R. E.
Went here to see the Keith Haring exhibition, he's probably my favourite artist. The exhibition was great but then I'm a bit biased. The museum is in a good location overlooking the Mersey and docks, there's a decent-looking café there and it seemed to have some interesting exhibitions which are free. Can't go too far wrong with the Tate I reckon.
D. L.
Always the place to visit when your in the Royal Albert Dock
I. F.
I'm not a modern-art enthusiast, thus I'd not be able to appreciate the artistic value of the museum itself in a "professional manner". However and in spite of the mentioned, I've enjoyed the visit.
There are a lot of interactive (and funny) areas in almost every exposition within the museum, as well as some weird (to me) creations of well-known artists worldwide.
Considering that It's free I have to recommend the visit.
T. P.
Great free gallery in a beautiful location
D. D.
A must visit place, even if you aren't an art lover. Lots of great works (and some not as good) as well as a showcase area for lesser known artists. The old warehouse building is a good fit for the gallery and the items change regularly.
M. T.
Only a short visit so we only explored one floor with the current Constellations exhibit that seeks to show connections between a few groups of artists. Very interesting. One installation item, Blindly, very moving.
J. H.
My partner and I have just left and we had the best time here! The staff were lovely, the building is beautiful, and the café is well worth a visit. We were helped a lot by Steve, who showed us how to join the Tate Collective - if you're under 25 it's a great idea to join for discounts and updates.
S. M.
Lovely museum with free exhibitions available
K. A.
Visited here during the giants weekend, great atmosphere. Thoroughly enjoyed visiting here, my friend and I had a great time in the optical art exhibition. We had a great talk from Phil about the display, he told us many things to look up once we got home about some of the optical illusions. Everyone seemed very friendly and cheerful even though it was busy. Great place.
A. F.
Amazing place, so many treasured art works. The cafe does the best scones! after 2pm. Get there for 2pm and they will be hot off the press.
A relaxed arty place.
R. W.
Can't honestly say I'm into abstract art, though I like to think of myself as being open-minded and willing to give it a try. So I went to have a look at the Keith Haring exhibition that's on at the moment and was pleasantly surprised. Basically a sort of graffiti artist and activist on racism, apartheid, and AIDS and other worthy causes. His work is - interesting, challenging, thought-provoking, but that's what art is about. Give it a go.
B. S.
I would like to give it a higher rating but on a personal level, the art displayed in there was not my cup of tea! Not saying other people wouldn't enjoy it in there! The art was spaced out well around the gallery and despite not actually liking the art except one piece, me and my boyfriend enjoyed having conversations about why we didn't like certain pieces!
A. B.
It's the Tate. If you like art and culture, get yourself there. Lovely views over the Albert Dock and a really nice cafe.
K. P.
Like the Tate but I do find that there can be a lot of wasted space, they dont often have a great order to the exhibitions and some pieces which you would expect to be together are not. The gift shop is quite expensive but no more than in most other galleries. The staff are helpful and friendly and one guy spent a lot of time speaking to my son and explaining the art pieces to him which was lovely
L. G.
Amusing way to spend an hour or so looking at modern art with the kids, bemusing even as neither they nor I really 'get it', but I like non the less.
M.
To the lovely gentleman working as agency staff in the Tate cafe. Thanks for cheering me up, I hope life treats you well. Just so you know, if was any braver, I would have said yes ☺
The coffee was nice, but it was 5 star customer service.
A. B.
A lot of very strange art. Not sure it was particularly to my taste but it certainly a talking point. The staff were very happy to explain the art to us. Overall it was a pleasant 2 hour trip and I'm glad I've been.
M. R.
Regional Tate has got some great pieces from well known artists.
We easily spent a few hours here. Definitely worth a visit if you like modern art plus it's free and in a great location.
R.
A pleasant place to view artists of the past and present. The little gift store is very enticing as I'm an art lover, they have some very interesting books looking at different artists work and at their personal life. I was able to purchase a book on Jean-Michel Basquiat, who is one of my favourite artists. The cafe is decent and the staff are pleasant. Price for both shops are reasonable.
N. C.
Had an amazing time at Tate today. Spacious not crowded. Pleasant to visit
S. M.
An interesting gallery, a good use of the empty space. The disappointment is that if you've experienced Tate Modern you're expecting a bigger volume of work and of wow. It's nice, it just needs more space to exhibit in!
M. G.
It was quite a nice gallery, however I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting a bit more from a Tate, and the ground level robot play wasn't worth the space.
D. B.
Minimalist and very modern - was interesting but I'm not that keen on modern art such as this, difficult to review this one based on my preferences so the photos will give you a better idea. Son (30) and grand-children (10-8) weren't overly keen either - few giggles at the nudes, a little young to appreciate art I think
M. T.
Where I was there only 2 floors where opened.
But in the complex can be a nice visit
W. L.
Free and always updated with new art and has a great family / kids room too
F. A.
Good collection of art from lots of different modern movements but still quite small and limited. The gift shop has some great books and the cafe has LOTS of vegan options! 😊
H. W.
There's always some free exhibits to get your teeth into, staff are helpful and friendly (unless you're trying to take photos!). It's worth noting if you are bringing a backpack they require you to store it in a locker downstairs. This costs £1 which is returned when you retrieve your bag, I imagine lockers may fill quickly on busy days though so be aware of this.
S. A.
Quite a nice "Mock Scouse" dish. I was super curious to try it as I had no idea what the dish was. Turns out it is a local version of an Irish stew the Mock version was with a bunch of root vegetables and was pretty tasty. Worth a try and good value at just over £6.
R. g.
Nice collection of modern art. There are a lot of exhibitions and events taking place here. Please book your visit for each exhibition/event on their website before your visit.
M. B.
Great place for actual and modern art
M.
Amazing location to visit if you're into art, quite modern and abstract as a summary of the galleries. Also the gift shop has some beautiful merchandise for yourself or as a present for a loved one into art!
T. P.
Excellent gallery, great exhibitions and a fine cafe. What more do you need?
P. B.
Fantastic museum. Feels like the smaller brother from the London tate, but had a lot to offer. The family room was invaluable, offering a chance for the little ones to create and be let loose. Free exhibitions and paid provide some good options. The museum is near the waterfront and lots of tourist destinations so easy for a quick drop in.
M. H.
don mccullin exhibition was amazing and informative, felt like i travelled the world in just over an hour
M. M.
Only critique I really have is that the display walls on some paintings really ruin them. Like bigger red wall for a muted blue painting? Why?
If you like modern art, it is great but I think I laughed at most pieces.
S. H.
Lots of interesting art work, an unusual collection from so many famous artist all in one room
C. M.
Very good if you like modern art
K. S.
Always a cool place to see pieces of creativity and artwork to marvel at. I visit every now and then and I've always enjoyed it's quirks.
C. S.
Excellent exhibitions and a must-see version of Tate
J. L.
Not much into art tbh. Went because I was new to Liverpool and it was free. It was worth going just because you can say you've been. If you're punching above your weight on a first date its a talking point.
So yeah I never came out feeling like the new tracy Emin. But it killed an hour
M. D.
This gallery has fantastic exhibitions that are interesting and eye-catching. I recommend this gallery to those who love the style of abstract and pop art.
What could be improved are the placements of some information boards for the art pieces. Besides from this its a great gallery.
s. d.
Very relaxed laid back atmosphere, loads to see and do, very interesting, and it's free, just donations.
G. C.
Exhibits are always changing so always new stuff to see. Explanations of the exhibits help to see what the artist was trying to do. It's free but try to make a donation so the we can keep this place open!
W. p.
Free entry, but while they did have a number of major artists' work, they were not exactly stand out samples. Top floor exhibition was poor - some second rate graffiti on walls, fox furs hanging on a shop rail - ooh, controversial and profound!
L. B.
The Keith Haring exhibition is very well worth a visit. Lots of other art too - much of it free - so Tate Liverpool is a good place to go. Wandering along the docks is a great way to get some fresh air and take in some water views.
n. p.
The Tate provides a space for contemplation and no matter how many times I visit, I always see something new in the familiar artworks. They are almost like old friends and the time is to be valued and treasured.
A. B.
I love this gallery. I spend hours in here and a week later want to go back for more. My only gripe is that some of the staff are a little rude and not very customer service orientated. You ask them a question and it feels like you're disturbing them even thought they're just sat there. They def need some extra training. The gallery on a whole though is amazing and a must for visitors.
D. C.
Good location but I never really understand art so it's probably a little bit wasted on me
E. D.
Good exhibition on meant it was good day out
J. D.
Always amazing! Not every day you see a Dali and a picasso
J. M.
Covid arrangements were well implemented. Staff helpful and pleasant.
McCullen exhibition was excellent, but a bit difficult with people understandably wanting to spend longer on certain photos.
A. P.
Nice exhibition including an outdoor installation. Too many tourists
R. M.
We only went to the cafe whilst waiting for and event to start. Its very expensive especially the drinks. Good selection of cakes but its self service and for hygiene id rather it be served by the staff. Funky modern airy decor with high ceilings and minimalistist style. Some plants would help to soften it up a bit
M. W.
Head here if you're in Liverpool for an afternoon of contemporary art. It's close by to other places of interest, such as the Liverpool Museum. The area itself is great to wander around too. Definitely worth a visit.
P. V.
Very nice ,and staff explained. Very good 👍
B. I.
Amazing place to visit so many different types of artwork some of them self-explanatory others complex others are very much up to the viewers interpretation.
no matter what you think of the art in the gallery it is a place that everyone should visit if nothing else to see the huge variety of art that exists
G. S.
Good location and worked well to keep alot open, enjoyed the Lucian Freud exhibit especially
A. M.
Enjoyed the special exhibitions. Not all to my taste but important to see.
D. M.
Lovely wee gallery with amazing art from Tate's collection. It's quite small, especially when compared to Tate London but provides a lovely initiate space to view world known art. It has lockers in the basement for bags as you aren't allowed large bags, which actually makes the experience more enjoyable. There's also a nice wee gift shop. It's in a nice place in Liverpool at dock side and there's a whole array of shops, cafes and restaurants just down from the Gallery. Had a very relaxing, eye opening experience here just before doing a university interview. I highly recommend
A. W.
A great place to visit... Really good for making your mind light up in all sorts of ways in a response to the creativity that surrounds you. Either the artwork or the people you meet there.
Also a fantastic place to walk around during lunchtime and letting the stress of the day melt away.
And everyone there is really nice and helpful
C. G.
Be prepared for school parties running around but still a nice small gallery to pass the time
G. C.
Really nice museum. Super helpful staff and facilities. I totally recommend. Entrance is free but we left a good donation as they kept our bags while we went to have a coffee. Supper recommended
B. H.
A great gallery with excellent facilities. I've been several times not only to wander around and see the art, but also to use the cafe and facilities and to browse the little shop. Never been disappointed and my daughter loves it too. Recommended.
S. C.
Great for a short walk around and there was a really nice selection of art on site from quite famous artists through history to more modern pieces. I can't claim that I fully "understood" all the art on show but it was nice nonetheless.
R. H.
Great installations.

Re-visited after a year and was most impressed. The gallery has impressive exhibits and over the 3 floors are varied and fascinating. Very friendly team on hand to guide and give information.

Brilliant exhibitions, really lovely building with a gift shop and cafe and is within walking distance from the city centre so really a great place to visit. The only part of our visit which wasn't as great was the attitude we had from the greeter at the entrance of the gallery by the stairs (visited 27/1 at about 11:30am). He glared at us as we approached the entrance and upon greeting him he ignored me and told my friend to put her rucksack in a locker (which was understandable). We didn't understand his issue with us and unfortunately this initial impression stuck with us for the entire visit, it left us feeling unwelcome.

Absolutely fabulous. The standard of curation is astonishing. Grouping works I have looked at loads of times on and off for 30 years and giving me new ideas about all of them and the issues they share uniquely.
Lovely space.

First visit. Excellent experience with loads of cafes and restaurants to choose from. Definitely worth a visit

The Tate is located in the Albert Dock so a prime location. There are 4 floors of art paintings and sculptures.Maybe it's me but I just don't get it.The place was busy to be fair but I don't get that a bit of twisted metal is art and people actually getting excited looking at it.Love it or hate you still have to visit to get your opinion out there. On the plus side staff were friendly and helpful. Toilets were clean. Cafe and gift shop are worth a visit. Free entrance and it is in a prime location but I left confused why people get excited. If you found my review helpful and enjoyed looking at my photos then don't forget to like them. Hope you enjoy your visit to the Tate.

I have been to so many exhibitions here, by artists I have heard of and ones I hadn't but they were all outstanding. It is a great place for a gallery too due to the amazing location and the adaptability of the building and history of the docks. There are also lots of place to eat nearby.

Easy to navigate, great art, gift shop and cafe
C. E.
Excellent art gallery with a variety of rooms and exhibitions taking up several floors. The museum gift shop on the ground level has the best souvenirs to gift others fron Liverpool, and the adjacent cafeteria offers a nice respite and decent refreshments from hours of walking.
D. L.
Child friendly, every time we visit there are different exhibitions, the play area changes - this time is had a green screen and props. Always worth a visit if you enjoy art!
k.
Loved this place since I was a kid, my family members had to drag me out of there when I was a kid as they weren't really into "Arty farty stuff" and just wanted to stare. But I went alone last month as an adult and loved it just as much. Great atmosphere.

Lucian Freud exhibition well worth a visit if you know little about this artist's life
P. M.
Very accessible, with some excellent exhibitions. Recommended if you are visiting Liverpool.
S. H.
If you don't enter with preconceived bias (slightly guilty here), you'll really enjoy the Tate. Of course there's art that isn't to everyone's taste but there is plenty to put a smile on your face and the WOW! moments are sensational.
One little gripe...the lighting on the Dali reflected off the surface. Could it be at a different angle, please? It was a spot light but I thought it might be unwise if I moved it!

Spent a very pleasant hour plus looking round the Tate with a friend after lunch in the Albert Dock
Well worth browsing through all the exhibits and explore all the concepts and ideas underpinning them -- l especially liked Warhol's self portrait !!! Well worth a visit and all free 😁
P. C.
Helpful staff, unusual, interesting artwork, I still don't get some the art but my daughter enjoyed the interactive area with the green screen; if you've never been to a gallery before give it a go.

Visited for the Keith Haring exhibition on 4 October 2019.
The Tate Liverpool is located at Albert Dock, a pleasant enough 15-20 minute walk from Lime Street station.
The building itself is typical of modern museums/galleries; light, airy and staffed by perpetually happy looking people.
Exhibition was excellent and quiet when I visited so lots of opportunity to linger without feeling rushed.
Merchandise is expensive, as ever but who can resist a postcard or six?
The cafe is reasonably priced, £5.10 for a slice of cake & tea for one.

Exceptional visit to the Tate Liverpool, I've been to the Albert Dock a few times and never been in but decided to on this occasion and was not disappointed. Wonderfully presented exhibits, old and new. Lovely coffee shop and even spent a few quid in the gift shop. A must if you are ever in Liverpool.

constellation is a really nice planned exposition

Interesting gallery. However, it was lacking some seating and bins. We enjoyed the plants that went into the wall. The lgbt theme was interesting, should have more if these events.

Good food, staff very helpful, tables are spaced around cafe. Good place to eat in.

I was highly delighted with the disabled changing facilities at the Tate. So lovely to be able to attend to my 26 year old disabled sons personal care needs easily and quickly without the usual bout of sumo wrestling crossed with contortionism that is usually the case, having to first weigh up how clean the floor is. Many many thanks. It really makes such a difference. 😊

Op art display really good. The scone was amazing. Didn't taste solid like most cosco products. I'm thinking it was a local bakery. Coffee to match. But cream was way too stingy as was the jam
S. J. M.
Seen the Egon Schiele exhibit recently and was really something else! Definitely recommend.

The Tate at the Albert Dock, Liverpool is a fascinating gallery with exhibitions and paintings from a variety of artists. Staff are available throughout the building to provide detailed information on any of the works on show. Entry is free unless you want to visit specific exhibitions, at which point there may be a cost. A light and airy gallery providing space to easily move around and enjoy the exhibitions.
The shop on the ground floor has a lot to choose from, and of course spend your money on

Awesome photo exhibit of Don Mccullin ....a must see top photographer ..gritty real life drama caught around the world ...

While visiting Liverpool to see the Walker Art Gallery, my spouse and I wandered down by the waterfront. I knew of the Tate branch there, but wasn’t sure we should try to fit it in. So glad we did. The reuse of old wharf buildings is excellently realized. The museum is good for a short visit but also will certainly reward a longer look. We spent more time looking at the current display of the permanent collection, which is full of treasures. There are interesting and significant works by Louise Bourgeois, Mark Rothko, Joseph Beuys, Joan Miro, Damien Hirst, Bridget Riley, and so many others. As you would expect here, the works are well displayed and—at times—especially well juxtaposed. There is a nice little shop, too. And you really can’t beat the price, which is FREE. There are also nearby eateries scattered among the adjacent wharf buildings. I’d say the museum is well worth searching out even if you don’t have a lot of time in this welcoming and attractive city.

Fairly small, but packed full of superb art. The Op Art exhibition was amazing. Really friendly and informed staff too. Definitely worth a visit.

Lovely space and great amenities. I just detest modern art. It's nice that it's free etc and such places need to exist, but it didn't float my boat today. There were some very interesting books about the New York scene that were fab though, Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat etc. So sorry to be bah humbug but I try to be frank in reviews. I walked around the three free floors and was bored to tears....... Too arty farty for me. 🥴😵

This fairly small gallery is ideally located close to the waterfront and museums. All the exhibitions were free when we visited. I'm not a great fan of modern abstract art, some of it I found interesting and thought-provoking and some of it a bit weird! Art includes works by Picasso, Lowry, Turner, Rothco, Warhol and Anthony Gormley. The exhibition spaces are light, airy and easily accessible by lift. The custodian we spoke to was knowledgeable and very enthusiastic, and information boards provided us with some insight into the artworks and their meaning. Some good art history books, and colouring books for both adults and children, in the gift shop.
P. W.
A must for modern art lovers, although some artwork is a little dubious for my tastes. But as art is perceived differently to different people..the Tate has a varied mixture! Pleasant surroundings too.
A. K.
Recently visited the Andy Warhol exhibition here. The exhibition was great and although I didn't get the chance to see much more of the gallery the staff were really helpful! The location was really picturesque too and there are plenty of nice bars to go for a drink in before/after.
E. S.
Such a wonderful art gallery in a such beautiful destination right on the Albert Dock! Definitely worth visiting, new art being added regularly, great for visiting with children as it has plenty of things for them to explore!
r.
Great exhibitions, good cafe and shop. Permanent exhibition including some amazing 20th century art with a surprisingly original selection of changing exhibitions all in a light airy 19th century Dock warehouse building. Great day out. Kids very welcome.
D. S.
Really good gallery, decent selection
L. H.
Small gallery by the sea. It's a bit of a TARDIS as it has 4 floors housing their collection and a lot of stairs. I was able to whiz round in about 30 mins if that but wasn't overwhelmed by the collection. It's a bit of a shame as I think it's awkward shape and location has contributed to this meaning it's a bit muted. That being said, their cafe is pretty good!
A. K.
Tons bigger than I expected, amazing to have so many free exhibitions under one roof. You need a good 2 or 4”3 hours to really enjoy it properly.
k. t.
Excellent selection of modern art. Also a nice café
G. T.
So much to see, very helpful staff around to help explain pictures/exhibitions, a must to visit.
J. M.
Amazing you know that you are in for an extravaganza with all the Tate's. If you love or if you hate modern art the Tate is a treat and the staff are knowledgeable about the building and the art displayed. Well worth a visit.
H. B.
Liverpool’s satellite of the TATE a fabulous exhibition space on the world famous and world heritage site, Albert Dock. As well as four floors of art, there is a great cafe/bar along with an arts based book and gift shop. Friendly staff. And great facilities.
E. C.
Went to see the chagall exhibition and it was really great. I love his paintings and they also have a load of other really interesting and beautiful art. I'm not a massive fan of the ultra-modern art but they don't go over the top here and have a good rotation of exhibitions and artists. It's also a lovely place to be on the waterfront and the staff are really helpful and will show you where things are and help you understand things too (if you're a bit thick like me). But Chagall was amazing. I literally was mesmerised by seeing the collection of his best works all there together and the detail and thought they'dput into arranging it and explaining it all was marvellous. I've been in dozens of times since then but forgot to review it and someone reminded me the other day. 100% recommend.
N. R.
Love the family room here but think the entire place needs a new look and an update for a modern art exhibition hub well I just don't feel the flow when I walk through it all feels like things are just dropped in random places and not very well catered for hope it improves as these are the signs of a place on the verge of closing
H. L.
Interesting building but didn't enjoy some of the art.... too highbrow in places and hard ro understand.
J. R. (.
Really wasn't what I expected. There is free access which gives you limited viewing access or you can pay for the whole package.
G. W.
Not being much of a fan of modern art, I was pleasantly surprised by the range and appeal of the works on display. If you can spare an hour or so, come along.
V. H.
Great one way systems 😃
E. P.
Lovely gallery but you have to book in advance to get in :/
S. R.
Mostly free for main exhibitions with paid tickets for special exhibitions, but a good range of discounts. Have always found them good value personally.
Galleries are wheelchair and pram/buggy accessible; baby change facilities available, accessible toilets, lockers, lift access to all floors; ipod audio guides available to hire which I usually find interesting and informative; children's activity guides available on requests; nice gift shop and cafe, which can handle complex dietary requirements.
The collection is in a lovely building with great views out over the river Mersey, if you need a break from the artworks.
L. B.
An amazing collection hosed in a beautiful gallery. There are lots of well known pieces in the collection and some breathtaking art. I would like to come back again next time, a great afternoon for anyone who likes art.
L. W.
Staff friendly, free exhibits had some interesting pieces.
T. D.
I'm not one for modern or contemporary art but the Tate Liverpool is a nice place to visit if you're looking to check something out while at Albert Docks. The first two floors are free admission and the top floor is for special exhibitions that require payment. I did a quick walk-through while I was there and it wasn't anything particularly special. I did stop in the gallery with the big Jackson Pollock and sat down to admire it.
If you're a big modern art fan then the Tate Liverpool is a must visit. If you're not, then it's still worth a walk through. You might learn something and be better for it. Besides, admission is free and donations are suggested. Otherwise enjoy your time in Liverpool.

Always a pleasure to visit superb for Art Exhibition 's and excellent food.
Z. A.
Not a lot to see
T. C.
Great exhibitions and galleries and always something for the children too.
C. S.
An amazing gallery in a wonderful location.
M. B.
Private view- Keith Haring exhibition. Get to it!
F. N.
Busy busy but staff worked hard to get people served quickly. Lovely coffee and wide range of cakes
J. ?.
The exhibits were all astounding, modern art thats accessible to all. I didnt realise there was a Keith Haring exhibition on and it ended up being the highlight of my trip to Liverpool. The staff were helpful and gave me an iPad to set up a Tate Collective account, available to those between the ages of 16 and 25, which allowed me to get a ticket for £5 and gave me discounts in the shop and cafe.
M. F.
It's a second time I have visited the museum and was exited. The entry into the general part is always free, you should pay for a ticket if you want to see an exibition, but the price is reasonable.
Z.
Interesting free to enter exhibitions, definitely worth popping in
R. B.
I love the Tate! Lovely cafe with good selection of drinks and cakes. Always fantastic exhibitions of modern and contemporary art including interesting installations and conceptual works
G. M.
Great gallery space with a wide variety of work by different artists including Picasso and Warhol. Great Roy Lichtenstein exhibition currently on. And it's free entry.

My friends and I popped in here for a drink it was a lovely place with good choice , great staff and a nice ambience about the place

Modern Art & exhibitions. Very contemporary museum.

Tate Liverpool is modern contemporary art gallery located at Alber Docks, Liverpool City centre.
There are lot of great restaurants and bars to choose from. Almost all the restaurants have vegetarian options
The place is heavily crowded over the weekends and holidays. Best time to visit is during weekdays.
It has good bus connectivity and is near the Liverpool docks and provides immediate access to several tourist attractions in Liverpool city center.
e. c.
Take the curators tour if you get the chance. It's nice to get a sense of context about the art you are looking at.
Special exhibition for Liverpool biennial was thought provoking, tour group had a brief discussion on the merits of one of the pieces.
S.
Loved it! The setting, the exhibitions, the knowledgeable guides, the cafe! Liverpool Tate is much smaller than the London ones and you can really enjoy and engage with it!
J. C. S.
A well sized gallery with plenty of things to do, from the cafe to ongoing and new exhibitons. With lockers in the basement is the perfect place to stop, store away your heavy bag/coat and enjoy some time at the Albert Dock.
K. N.
It’s hard to not compare Tate Liverpool to Tate Modern, but as a Londoner, I kept doing this throughout the entire exhibit. It’s definitely on the much smaller and maybe that detracts from the overall experience of being in a Tate museum. Either way, you can grab lunch at the cafe before/after at reasonable prices and then spend 2 hours in this gallery. If you’re in the area, you can check it out. Otherwise, not worth a trip all the way to Liverpool for a visit.
M. D.
One of my favourite places in the world... to be fair I love the Tate Modern London more (it's bigger after all)... but this place always makes me happy... nearly always decent temporary free exhibitions on - and great free informative talks too... the recent Roy Lichtenstein one was fascinating and really changed my views... The location of the Tate doesn't hurt either - always look forward to my next visit here...
I. P.
It was a very unexpected experience. I’m not that into modern art, some looked nice while others looked boring and could be better. Definitely not impressed with the painting with one line across...
