Reviews of Cinema Museum

The place itself is charming with great artefacts, great programme of films from the golden age. Ronald and Martin who run it are lovely friendly dedicated people. However despite their advice for people to wear masks until we are actually post Covid, many attendees ignored this, so sadly for the first time at the Cinema Museum I didn't feel altogether safe. If this is the norm there now, then vulnerable people be warned.

Surprised my partner with a visit here. Movies are his thing, I just went along for the ride. Was expecting maybe a 30 minute tour, maybe 45 minutes. Was a bit surprised to see a sign on the door saying it would be at least 90 minutes, and up to 2 hours.
We got out of there almost 4 hours later. And loved every minute of it. Great stories and hystory, it kept me engrossed to my surprise.
And this wonderful place needs help preserving history, as they may lose their building.
C. D.
This is surely a must for film lovers and people who enjoy off the beat and original places. Fantastic range of memorabilia, books and cinematic artefacts.

I went to what I thought was going to be a 2hr guided tour of the museum and it ended up turning into 4 and I was not disappointed.
I've since been back twice to watch old films and it is such a lovely (and inexpensive) experience. I highly recommend doing both.
The venue is well kept and interesting and all the fellas who work there are clearly very passionate about cinema, which is infectious.
Check their website for what's on!

Went for a screening of Wizards (1977 classic animated fantasy by Ralph Bakshi) without much thought to the venue. Found it to be an incredible, sprawling Victorian fmr workhouse, which once hosted Charlie Chaplin. Crammed full of film memorabilia (posters, props, equipment & more) and run by friendly and enthusiastic volunteers, I'm defo planning another visit.

Can only visit in groups. This place needs to be arranged better to display. Eg into years. 2nd floor 1930s . Very much a miss match but interesting
B. V.
Had a great 👍 time went with south london cares with gave us a meal, raffle, and entrainment. The place was very impressive
K. M.
Amazing place can't wait to visit again. So unique
H. T.
Completely incredible and a real hidden gem. Huge building full of relics of cinema. Great classic cinema showings, too, with a good bar and food.
J. S.
Amazing absolute Gem! This place a is a secret wonder of London you need to check out.
L. d.
Amazing gem. Will now become a regular here. It is absolutely a Must See for tourists who love the silver screen
B. S.
Saw one of Woman and Cocaine's film series here, fantastic evening and amazing venue!
P. M.
A tremendous place for film buffs both for the services it provides and for the building in its own right.
C. W.
What an amazing place! Amazing projectors, friendly people, quirky place. LOVE IT!
M.
Amazing history in pictures. Moving arms creative blend of real footage and acted ones.
K. Y.
Lovely place for cinema history! Cinema lovers must visit!
J. C.
Says open for pre-booked tours and then on the website pre-booked tours will open in 2022! No date given
S.
We are absolutely thrilled. The Cinema Museum shows the history of past movies in the UK.
L. Y.
Excellent place to visit. Run by Martin and team. Very interesting and informative. Brought back lots of memories when going to the cinema when I was a child. Lots of memorabilia. All very familiar. Drinks and biscuits plus fruit where available at no extra cost. We even got to view old movies, silent and talking at the end of the tour and in cinema seats that I remember. Well worth a visit bit out of the way but the building as significance to why. Will be going back again. They even have movie nights of old films. Very easy to find.
L. W.
The museum tour was very informative, interesting and fun! A little long, so don't make any hard plans for the rest of the day, but it is worth it as you travel back in time to hear all about the history of the building, its occupants, the people who created the museum and the long and varied past of film! A definite must for classic and independent film aficionados and film students. The staff are volunteers and are incredibly passionate about what they do. Support them if you can and sign their petition to save the building!
A. S.
Lovely place with a unique collection! For movies lovers is a must-visit.
K. G.
One of the most magical place in London. With big passion to cinematography.
E. T.
Some nice "exhibits" but not enough there for my liking. All tours are guided and I think this is mainly because there is so little content, the guide seems to talk you through what little they have to pad out the time you have there. Guide was knowledgeable though, and clearly has a passion for cinema. It was enjoyable enough, in a fairly weird location - not central and in an old hospital building among a housing estate.
L. A.
It's not really a traditional museum but well worth a visit if you have any interest in the film industry. Morris, our tour guide, was fabulous, my partner and I fell in love with him instantly. He was entertaining and dealt with the group well. Do allow plenty of time for the tour. You must book first though!!!!
K. D.
From the moment you approach the lovely victorian facade, you know this is going to be a stunning place. I went to see a screening/talk here and was bowled over by the amount of beautiful, historic memorabilia on display. A very nice, friendly place to be in, it's a bit awkward to find, but is only 5 minutes walk from Elephant & Castle tube. I was surprised with how good the bar was (very well stocked) and some of the seating is quirky too! Really enjoyed my experience and am saddened by their potential closure, so please support it if you can.
J. C.
Unique place. Went for an awards night, but will consider visiting again. I believe you need to book tours as its not just open all the time. Full of interesting items. Charlie Chaplin lived or was schooled here, not 100% sure of the exact detail.
M. C.
If you have an interest in the history of early cinema this is the museum for you. The museum is based in a Victoria work house, where Charllie Chaplin was sent. The guide who takes you around is very knowledgeable. They have a range of cinema artifacts. Free tea and coffee is included in the price of admission which is £10. You have to book in advance The museum is a ten minute walk from elephant and castle tube station.
S. L.
An absolute must visit place for film fans and cinephiles. The workhouse has a great history and links with Charlie Chaplin. The staff and volunteers are passionate, knowledgeable and great custodians of The Cinema Museum. Great items on display and anecdotes. A lovely cup of tea at the end of the tour which can last up to three hours with so much information to take in.
J. A.
I found out about this Museum by pure chance, I was talking with one of my fellow hotel guests about the places we have visited in London and it was he who mentioned the Cinema Museum.
There is 'Bot All' information about this Museum from the usual sources, so it is a brilliant museum and they want to keep it a secret or its rubbish and not worthwhile visiting.
Well I can tell you that it is BRILLIANT and deserves more publicity then it currently gets.
It is actually housed in what was the old Lambeth Workhouse where one of its more famous residents spent his early childhood, that person being one Charlie Chaplin ☺
Open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 6pm.
This is a pre booked tour museum (no just turning up at the door😕).
Adults £ 10.00 with Children and Concessions at £7.00.
This tour lasts around 2 hours and includes a 30 minute film show.
I found the tour guide very knowledgeable and friendly. For me thus was a trip down memory lane and I really enjoyed myself.
There is full disabled access everywhere within the Museum including the shop and toilet facilities.
There is no dedicated car park attached to the Museum, take the Tube or Bus is my advice.
Very good Museum showing what Cinemas used to be like, even the local flea pits 😁.
A. N.
Founded and still run by Martin and partner and a host of volunteers. If you love going to the flicks then this is the place for you. A blast from the past and a goldmine of momentos and artifacts from years gone by. This place will eventually be modernised and will lose its charm. Go now! Only open when events are on so book in advance.
L. N.
Quirky and charming. Really like the Women and Cocaine series at the moment but generally visit this place regardless - great space (part of the old Lambeth workhouse), great people, good bar and refreshments and nice old stuff to buy. A piece of history not to be missed.
G. C.
This place is very, very close to the Elephant and Castle and isn't anything like as well known as it ought to be - or shortly will be, I suspect. Over Christmas, we booked onto a thoroughly enjoyable guided tour of the cinema museum in Kennington. It's run by volunteers for ten pounds you get to see old artefacts, hear stories, see old films and even get a free cuppa and a biscuit
C. W.
This tour was one of the best afternoons I’ve ever had in London. Morris was a goldmine of information and very entertaining. The passion that the staff feel for cinema is obvious in every detail of the place. Can’t recommend highly enough.
J. J.
Interesting venue, loads of beautiful artifacts, lovely and helpful volunteers. If you're a cinephile (or not), much to enjoy here. Very reasonably priced. Nothing like seeing silent cinema with live piano accompaniment within a historically relevant space. Please make a small donation, if you can. This landmark isn't supported any other way, and needs to stay open. 😊
M. F.
A truly valuable addition to the cultural landscape -- not just if London, by the country too. A beautiful and serious living museum. The largely volunteer staff are wonderful too.
S. L.
Amazing place, volunteer run, contact before visiting as volunteers aren't always available to open the museum. Amazing as a venue to hire for events, presentations, screenings, premieres, bar and food available to the side of the presentation room with combined cafe and cinema style seating
B. ..
Came for a screening of Douglas Sirk's Magnificent Obsession - shown in a small cinema but of a very good quality. But the museum itself has so much history you could feel it! I hear it may be closed for good, but believe places like this should be preserved and developed, it has so much to tell! For all cinephiles
M. G.
Amazing place with quirky exhibits and an interesting programme of films. You can watch and drink a beer or wine at the same time! Not that easy to find the first time, but worth making an effort.
M. W.
This place is a gem superb noir movies. Today laurel and hardy 3 monthly meeting showing 5 classic short films. Can't go wrong for a Saturday afternoon and only 5 pounds for non members 😆😆😆
P. B.
Great place to see a whole range of films and events. The tours are really informative. Excellent also for it's silent film screenings. Would be a real shame if the Museum closed. Please sign the online petition on the website.
A. W.
An amazing place with old posters and projectors, showings of classic and cult movies.
N. C.
Wow, a magical place. It is one of those secret places that you will want to show to someone special. However, make a reservation in advance, this is a place to visit with a guide and not the - I was on the corner and I want to visit - type of museum.
a. w.
Amazing place, full of memorabilia and showing amazing old films in a quirky little screening room. It's at risk by developers, so go soon and save this fabulous trip to the past.
D. S.
Housed in a former workhouse where Charlie Chaplin once inhabited as a child. Much memorabilia and good range of second hand Film related books for sale. Bar + Tea/Coffee. 10 mins from Elephant & Castle tube.
F. M.
The museum's collection includes items relating to film production, film exhibition and the experience of cinema-going from the earliest days of cinema to the present. It holds examples of every gauge of film projector, professional and amateur, ever manufactured.
According to Time out "The Cinema Museum in Lambeth boasts an idiosyncratic collection of film memorabilia, including posters, art deco cinema chairs, ushers' uniforms from the 1940s and ‘50s, tickets, ashtrays and popcorn cartons, as well as an archive boasting hundreds of books, an estimated one million plus photos and 17 million feet of film."At its events volunteers regularly dress in original cinema attendants' costumes.
G. M.
The Cinema Museum is a museum in Kennington, London, and a charitable organisation. Its collection was founded in 1986 by Ronald Grant and Martin Humphries, from their own private collection of cinema history and memorabilia. Its current building was once a workhouse where Charlie Chaplin lived as a child.
N. S.
The most wonderful place in London!
D. F.
This is an excellent Museum full of fascinating objects dating back to the early days of film and motion pictures. It's a MUST SEE collection for anyone interested in the film industry.
P. P.
A small museum but has a very interesting history. Fabulous old film footage shown in excellent condition some over 100 years old.
G. L.
Retells how movies used to be made, very nice. You go back on time.
But I must advise, for the ones suffering from high fever alergy needs to take extra care.
C. O.
If you're interested in anything to do with the film industry this place is worth a quick look round...I wish this lovely museum had a higher profile & was treasured as it should be...
P. L.
An excellent collection of cinema memorabilia together with a cinema auditorium. Tours were available. Tucked away from the main road.
S. S.
It has been a lovey tour. The guides are passionate, and speak in an intelligent clear voice. Please help save their project and sign the petition.
T. P. C.
