Reviews of Dennis Severs' House
R. M.
Fascinating and thrilling assault on the senses on a theatrical tour of the house, now exactly as Denis Severs did it. History and fun combined. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
S. M.
One of the best experiences in London I've ever had. I can't begin to describe the amount of detail and love they've put into this place. I was mesmerised by the sights, the sounds and the smells and felt like I was in a sensory overload heaven. The price for this place is completely justified because it's a one of a kind experience and a very rare find in this day and age. I really did feel like I had gone back in time and actually felt emotional at times too. Absolutely amazing.
S. C.
The evening theatrical tour was incredible, thought-provoking and fun! Guided through the house and lives of Dennis Severs’ creation, the items in the house seem so much more alive and in context. I believe the tours are limited to six people so they are intimate and personal—much of the time the guide/story teller is looking directly at you! I can’t imagine a better way to participate in a building’s history.

We visited Dennis Severs’ house for the guided tour last Thursday and our tour guide was Joel.
Two of us have been to the house previously on a silent tour so knew roughly what to expect, or so we thought.
This was a completely different experience to anything we could have imagined and we all agree it was one of the highlights of our stay in London.
The small number of visitors allowed enabled an intimate performance to be be delivered which was as good a piece of theatre as anything on at the West End.
If anything, the description on the website undersells the experience given.
Joel was a magnificent guide and delivered the tour in the most entertaining way and deserves a special call out.
In summary this was a fantastic evening.
W. K.
Fascinating house and contents. Set out very well. Went round with seven others; even this small group was a tight fit in the small rooms, but there is no hurry to move round.
M. M.
The performance tour is excellent, you really feel immersed in the world Dennis Sever created and Joel’s delivery is so captivating. This is such a unique experience and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about London history (as seen through Sever’s imagination)

This is an amazing part of history right on my doorstep. You feel that the previous occupant have just stepped out of the room . The attention to details really makes it so special. Well worth a visit
V. L.
If you've ever been to a Punch Drunk show, you might think they owe a big debt to this whimsical little gem hidden in The City. Full of atmosphere and historical poignancy.

Really great place.
Recommend going in daylight as it's hard to see everything at night, also at night people are noisier in local pub gardens which can disturb the visit.
There used to be more sound effects of swishing, giving you sense someone had moved out of the rooms, it seemed they toned this down last time I went which I feel gave the experience a little less intrigue! I wonder if someone complained and they toned it down.... a shame in my opinion.
Go at a quieter time, the less people you're in there with the better!

It is an amazing experience. Only lit by candlelight and with a requirement for silence, this is a very curious thing to do. The food and drink in the glasses and on the plates is real as is the tobacco in the pipes and the ash in the fireplace. It feels, looks and smells like the 18th and 19th century environment you are in. Don't expect a museum of artifacts, although there are a huge quantity. Instead be ready for a historical experience. It is not cheap, but making this possible must be very expensive to achieve.
J. K.
An incredible immersive experience - can’t really think of anything like it. Storytelling and history wrapped together….go with a open mind and prepare to be blown away!

My wife and I have just shared a magical tour and experience through the ages of fact (and some fiction), the presenter was simply superb, knowledgeable, professional and thoroughly mesmerising! GREAT TOUR, GREAT NIGHT.

A magical and unforgettable place. A sensory experience to one's self. The best part is No cameras allowed. Suggest going there during Christmas time or Summer time.
C. N.
Always wanted to visit this house, so my husband and I did this in August 2021. Interesting is the most I can say. I did enjoy our silent visit, but because the house is mostly in candlelight and it was hard to see some objects. But overall glad I went.
C. M.
A must visit if you like nontraditional experiences. Definitely not a tourist spot. Not a museum, but not a passive experience, either. Immerse yourself in Dennis’ perfectly preserved vision of London.
S. P.
Thoroughly recommend the tour. There were 6 of us and our guide gave us a very entertaining 80 mins, painting a picture of life in Shoreditch in the 18th and 19th centuries
N. R.
We went on the guided theatrical experience tour. Absolutely fantastic. Joel is an incredible actor, makes for a memorable & interesting evening

A very special - in fact magical- experience for the imaginative adult. There was a wait of about 15 minutes between every eight or so people being admitted so we waited around 45 mins to get in. Cash only but there's an ATM 1 min away. The rooms are atmospheric and haunting with the sounds and smells of their era, wonderfully recreated in this gloomy, creaking old house on four floors. It's an eccentric place yes but with the authenticity lacking in Tussauds et al. Well worth a visit, then go for a bite to eat at Spitalfields or the nice pub opposite. Last thought though, what's in the attic up the rickety ladder? We may never know...
A. D.
Step back in time. Amazing. In an area that now looks like New York, slip back a few centuries.
K. M.
Very interesting living museum. Tucked away in a side street in Spitalfields. It's an house old that is set up as a walk through museum. It's not talking as you wander through the rooms as if you are observing London family life through the ages. See the furniture, the kitchens, the bedrooms. Hear the noises, smell the smells. Limited places and times. Booking is a must.
D. J.
Highlight of our London trip by far, silence was excellent, I'm going to turn our house in Wicklow dark and Dickens like!
L. C.
Unlike anything I've done before. You walk around in silence and the place is lit by candles only. It feels like you've stepped back in time and the residents will be back soon. The rooms are amazing with sounds and smells present. No photos are allowed and it's not a good idea to big large bags with you.
A. S.
Absolutely magical place, a real London must and unlike anywhere I've been before. Usually find walking around stuffy stately homes lacking in immersion but with the candle light, smell of fireplaces, dust and sounds of the family creaking through the house here
it totally immerses you. It's no exaggeration to say this is as close to stepping back to such an evocative time you can get, especially on the evening tours. Personally think £15 entry is a bargain as it allows them to keep visitor numbers down which makes it so intimate. Been many times and can't wait for it to reopen to return. Few lovely pubs nearby as well to head to after.
D.
I think this is one of London's best hidden gems. Really is the best way of getting in the Christmas spirit .
I. H.
Wow! This is art! What an experience. If you want to see how your great great great grandparents lived, visit. This place is awesome.
G. A.
This is a fantastic place. Quite unlike anything else I've seen. I can't recommend it enough. Really good that it's all in silence. Great attention to detail.
P. S.
Amazing experience going back in time ... Loved looking at the surroundings and treasures that my Huguenot ancestors would have experienced.
J. S.
Is is interesting? Sure. The concept of a silent, intimate wander in a house as if the occupants had just left is intriguing. The smells and soft sounds in each room piped in through hidden loudspeakers add to the atmosphere as do the incredible collection of knickknacks and interior design. But £15?! Total ripoff. So, so glad I went for Open House London for free as I would have been so annoyed to pay that much for a 20-minute visit.
A. H.
Incredibly atmospheric and evocative of a time gone by, far more so than I would've imagined before going in. You're encouraged to adopt a thoughtful frame of mind and it's more rewarding for doing so. This isn't like any other 'attraction' I've been to. Well worth it in my opinion.
R. J.
There is nothing else like it! A journey back in time inside this wonderfully atmospheric old house. You will hear voices, experience sounds and smells, but never quite get to glimpse the occupants. But you will feel that they are there, sometimes having just left a room before you enter, as evidenced by the half eaten meal left on the table and the glass of wine nearby. An experience not to be missed!
J. L.
This is an interesting house to visit. The history of the Spitalfields area and of the houses built to accommodate Huguenot silk workers is fascinating. And Dennis Severs’ interpretation of the lives of the fictional Jervis family in the house on Folgate Street is engaging. However, the idea that the house somehow allows you to smell and see and hear your way back through the ages didn’t work for me. The slightly bonkers and eclectic mix of modern, vintage and antique objects made me smile but nothing more profound than that. Plus the staff all take themselves a bit too seriously. At £15 a ticket I would have liked to have got a bit more out of it. However, it must be expensive to keep the place up so I didn’t begrudge it too much.
J. G.
Very well done. A complete sensory time travel experience. Though I’m not sure the fibreglass insulation falling through the upper floor ceiling is true to the period. The final room is an interesting attempt at satire. The pomposity, arrogance and rudeness of the door man does ruin it slightly. They have obviously created a high demand by limiting the opening period to a fraction of each day, less time than the web site suggests. The door man obviously takes pleasure in turning people away.
C. R.
Very unusual and unique experience! Total silence adds to the impression. I guess the initial idea of a sensory attraction fully fulfills. The place is rather interesting than beautiful, but definitely worth visiting. The staff is absolutely professional and polite. Overall - great! I recommend booking in advance of course, and after your visit don't forget to pop into the nearby pub)))
V. T.
This is a fantastic experience , enjoyed in silence as you walk through the rooms which are as if just vacated by a family back in time. The scullery on the basement is where you start at about 1740 and you end up in 1901 in the attic. A living museum if you like full of costumes and rooms as they would have been . Fantastic and highly recommended - not far from the old Spitalfields market. Loved it.
M. V.
It's a large house with basement and upper floors. Needs to be booked and ours was in October at 7.30. All rooms are lit be candlelight and it was difficult to see and read. A day visit might be better. All staff seem committed and knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. Very interesting. Not good if you have difficulty with stairs.
K. F.
A magical house to visit at Christmas time. The scenes and the smells and the decorations are just amazing!

Fascinating old house tell Dennis I say hi

Interesting preserved early 18th century home. Worth a visit.

A unique gem of a museum / art installation.
You enter the unassuming black door to a house that has been carefully themed. You wander through each room in silence to a different period. Observing how the rooms are laid out, focusing on the sounds and delicate smells that have been carefully crafted to give you an experience of life in the era of the room.
I'd recommend the twilight sessions and watch out for the real live black cat!
B. B.
Sadly disappointing. Having been excited by the conceit that you have the feeling that the family are just around the corner, it felt more like a visit to Miss Haversham's house: dusty, unloved and untouched for decades. The whole place needs a good professional clean by museum trained staff if the fiction is to survive.
P. G.
I would strongly recommend this place as it was one of my favourites in whole London. The smells coming from gas lamps, old stoves, fresh food and objects themselves make up the atmosphere and get you in this 18-19th century's English tale that you can't get enought off. Don't speed through and get the essence of this whole place, cause every room, every object is special !
D. V.
Great experience, strongly recommend. Book before arriving as they only take a set number of people at a time. Check hours per day as someone still lives in the building and viewings are scheduled around him (which is one of the many crazy things linked to this experience).
M. E.
Wow. Found out about this place after it was reviewed, post reopening, in the Guardian. Incredible.
C. B.
A really cool 'museum'. It is like being able to walk through someones house and look at all their things. You get a great feel of what life would be like just before the turn of the century. It is the exact opposite of a stately home tour and show how life would have been.
B. D.
One of the hidden gems of London but worth the time and money. No photos allowed so missed a little "guide book" for reading at home and remembering all the little stuff you see.
My tip: take your time (at least 45min are recommended) and look in every corner and nook ;-)
S. P.
I really enjoyed this place. It's probably just slightly overpriced, but still worth it.
A lot of people complain about the little signs that say "Shhhh" or "You either see it out you don't", but they didn't bother me a bit. There are other signs as well that set up many of the rooms (Hint- most rooms have a table right in the middle with a sign that briefly describes the occupant and what happened in the room. Read these signs before you start looking around the room.)
The level of detail in each room is extraordinary. Each item is placed in the rooms for a reason. There's food and drink in many of the rooms and they are all real, and the house is lit by candlelight only. It must take a lot of time to prepare the house each day for visitors.
Please note that the house is not a museum. Many of the artifacts look genuine to me, but I'm sure some are reproductions. When I looked at each room, it made me think about how difficult life was hundreds of years ago. It also made me think about how much more cosier and social some aspects of olden days were compared to the days of mobile phones and video streaming.
It took me and wife about an hour to go through the house, but we saw other people rush through as though it was a race. Please take your time! There's no pressure from staff for you to finish as quickly as possible.

You can't really describe this as 'a museum', more a fully immersive experience with every sense assaulted from a sight, smell and sound. Imagine stepping on a set or horror film with the added advantage of it being historically accurate with meticulously presented antique props covering every inch of its five floors. Mind-blowing!

A TRUE IMMERSIVE JOURNEY INTO THE PAST!
Dennis Severs' House is a "still-life drama" created by the previous owner Dennis Severs as a "historical imagination" of what life would have been like inside for a family of Huguenot silk weavers.
It is a Grade II listed Georgian terraced house.
From 1979 to 1999 it was lived in by Dennis Severs, who gradually recreated the rooms as a time capsule in the style of former centuries.
The motto of the house is:
Aut Visum Aut Non! - "You either see it or you don't."
The house dates from approximately 1724.
It is one of a terrace of houses built of brown brick with red brick dressings, over 4 storeys and with a basement.
Dennis Severs (1948, Escondido, California – 1999, London) was drawn to London by what he called "English light", and made his home in the dilapidated property in Folgate Street in 1979.
This area of the East End of London, next to Spitalfields Market, had become very run-down, and artists had started to move in.
Severs started on a programme to refurbish the ten rooms of the house, each in a different historic style, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The rooms are arranged as if they are in use and the occupants have only just left.
There are therefore displays of items such as half-eaten bread, and different smells and background sounds for each room.
Severs called this "still life drama" and wrote:
“I worked inside out to create what turned out to be a collection of atmospheres: moods that harbour the light and the spirit of various ages.”
Woven through the house is the story of the fictional Jervis family (a name anglicised from Gervais), originally Huguenot (French Protestant immigrants) silk weavers who lived at the house from 1725 to 1919.
Each room evokes incidental moments in the lives of these imaginary inhabitants.
“The journey through the house becomes a journey through time; with its small rooms and hidden corridors, its whispered asides and sudden revelations, it resembles a pilgrimage through life itself.”
Severs bequeathed the house to the Spitalfields Historic Buildings Trust, an architectural preservation charity, shortly before his death.
It is now open to the public, who are asked during their visit to respect the intent of the creator and participate in an imaginary journey to another time.
This House Museum is really unique and Unexpected and also helps you understand more about the history and culture of this stunning neighborhood!
P. A. S.
This is a an unique place. I highly recommend it. Make an advance reservation. No photos inside so it's hard to describe how different and amazing it is. Such a contrast with all the construction and shiny new buildings going up at Liverpool Street.
J. C. L.
Beautiful. Atmospheric. Picturesque. Artistic. Wonderful collection capturing the time and feel. Best thing seen for a while. Go at night with candles. Worth the money and time. Loved standing in the rooms when others have left us. Feeling it. Just left it now and still can’t believe how wonderful that was.
A. C.
A curio of a place. The intention is that you wander through this house of rooms set in different time periods in silence and immerse yourself imagining the family that 'live there' are close at hand and have only just left the room.
Rooms are set as lived in rather than museum fashion - half finished food and drinks and the un-cleared away detritus of everyday living.
I didn't quite get it if I'm honest. I found the scenes very interesting and on occasion poignant, but a higher plane of consciousness was not achieved! It's certainly an enormous contrast to the city outside and you forget you're in the centre of London for a while.
L.
Incredible experience for Regency and Victorians lovers. Highly recommended.
E. A.
It is one of the most interesting things to see right now. More than a chance to learn about the past, it's a chance to live and breathe through a stunning art installation. The audio effects could be enhanced, as they are sometimes not clear. All in all a very enjoyable and unique experience
S. P.
The most incredible walk through time - beautiful and captivating. People here are complaining they can't take photos. It's strange how addicted we are these days to chronicling our lives with pictures, to share our lives instantly. Why? Just watch, smell, enjoy it! Instead of looking at this house behind the lens of your camera, why not just look with your eyes? This is a magical experience.
B. C.
I walked out wondering how on earth to follow an experience like that. It was such a sensually rich and utterly fascinating, fully immersive trip through the 333 years life and history of this house (if the 1685 date on the fireplace is to be believed! Actually I think the house dates to about 1725).
This is like a Goethean study of history - using all the senses to fully absorb the experience. You feel utterly transported to another age, or several ages, as each room has a slightly different time frame, aromas and sounds from the imagined history of the Jervis family of silk weavers that Severs invoked here.
This isn't a museum, but rather a loving, even obsessive recreation of living history. You are not there to 'learn about' something but live it and breathe it. It becomes part of you, something you will never forget, for its intense vividness.
We went for the candlelit , silent, evening visit which deepens the magic of the place even more.
One of the best experiences I've had in London!
S. T.
Amazing place, a 250 year time capsule, the attention to detail is second to none and you really get the filling of going back in time. Your probably find a slight queue outside on arrival and entrance fee is cash only, but still deserves the 5 stars, well worth the visit.
L. R.
My girlfriend has been harping on about Dennis Sever's house for the last 3 years. She took her parents there and they loved it.
We finally went along today and it was well worth the effort.
We were greeted at the front door by a friendly guy who explained the house and what to expect. We paid our entrance fee (£10) and were left to wander the house at our own pace.
The whole experience was tremendous and I would highly recommend it to everyone. What I really liked was the small details such as a real food in the kitchen (not plastic like many stately homes) and how decorations had been added to reflect the time of year (it was Christmas time).
Well worth the £10.
Note: There are some steep stairs so if you're not very mobile, it may be a struggle.
D. R.
Gréât house, lots of questions which we were told we could ask at the end, no opportunity and felt a little ushered out.
E. F.
Unique experience; the sites, smells, and sounds made you feel like you were back in the 1700s and 1800s. I'd recommend to go at night by candle light and when it's less busy. Would've been nice not to have so many people around to get the full effect.
A. G.
A worthwhile and wonderful experience. The tour takes 15 - 20 minutes. An impression of 9 rooms over 4 floors. Each floor a different epoch between 1720 and 1800.
V. J.
Sunday 10th March 2019 the experience was wonderful. The sounds, scents, light, candle lit rooms, dust and the entire collection of artefacts, clothes and remnants of food left while family left the house to go to the River Thames to hear news of the death of King William IV and the subsequent accession of Queen Victoria to the throne is the most moving historical presentation I have seen. Not a drop of Hollywood involved.
A must do experience and well worth the £10.00 charge per adult. Vincent Jasper
D. M.
Not your usual museum, it bills itself as a still life setting. We visited just after Christmas, so the setting was still festive themed.
The candlelight, fireplaces and smells of cooking really set the atmosphere for the visit.
s. m.
A wonderful space. Restored Spitalfield House as it would have been in the 18th-19thC. At night lit by candles, with real fires in the rooms. Very very dusty and genuinely old. Well worth the visit. Then pop across to the pub across the road for a real London pub experience...with London prices, so be prepared.
M. M.
Hard to do it justice in a review. Stepping in, you slowly get sucked into a different world. A place for quiet, for letting your imagination take the wheel. Best come early, queues can get quite long!
И. Ж.
No photos are allowed. No excursions. Just a text on a papers on tables. Yes- a great job was done to regenerate the atmosphere that hosts have just left the house. But! They couldn’t live in such dark and old environment. Black walls. Dirt. To many small things everywhere.
A. o.
It was a very cool experience! The house was so well executed that it did truly feel like you were walking through another century! I would highly recommend anyone to check this place out! ❤️
R. N.
I love this place, especially at Christmas when it feels very festive. Guests should note that you have to walk around in silence and it’s worth sticking to this- it really makes it feel like going back in time! Do talk to the guides, they know their stuff. All in all, a lovely, very interesting place!
C. S.
Look out for the little face carved into one of the walnuts 👀
p. c.
Finding words to describe this place and experience is a little difficult. To describe it as a cross between an art installation, a time capsule and an hour in silence wandering around a dimly lit terrace house just doesn't do it justice. Highly recommended (if this is likely to be your kind of thing). We're likely to visit again in the future.
B. S.
What an absolute gem tucked away in 18th Century Folgate Street. We decided to visit on a Silent Evening and it certainly was quite an immersive experience. The house has been set up as it would have been initially in the 18th century and later in the 19th century. It follows the fortunes of a silk merchant and his family. All lit by candlelight with sounds and scents.
A. M.
If you're interested in how history is presented, this museum is definitely worth a look. I suspect that it's unusual curatorial approach is like Marmite and you'll either love it or dislike it. I'm really glad I went; but the lack of contextual material is not for me.
M. D.
Weird and quirky, but worth a visit. Very atmospheric and since there is no talking allowed and no electric light you really can immerse yourself in the history of the house. A little haven....a little gem..
E. D. B.
Designed to get your imagination soaring, Dennis Severs House is a unique concept. Part museum showcasing the Georgian period, part art installation encouraging you to feel you have stepped into the past.
A great deal of your enjoyment depends on others taking the tour - if they're intrusive it can break the spell somewhat. Make sure you go with people unlikely to chat all the way through.
At Christmas an extra-special effort is put into decorations. I went in the evening, and truly felt I have slipped through a timehole and back again as I stumbled out of the house back into the height of the City's Christmas revels. Highly recommended.
F.
best place in London! So lovely made with so much love for the details (even the smell)! Worth a visit for everyone who is interested in local history! Nothing for the asian selfie-stick tourist type :)
J. R.
Love it. First visit years ago had pleasure of tour by Dennis. Been back couple times since including the rather lovely candle lit silent tour.
M. M.
Is it interesting? Yes. Is it unique for London? Not really. There are many other places in London where you can see how people lived in the past without queuing.
T. K.
Found it very interesting - felt like being on a movie set. Would give it five stars if not for the pretentious nature of the whole thing - especially the 'house motto': "You either see it or you don't".
J. D.
An amazing experience that you would never knew existed. It will take you about 30 to 45 minutes to get around and may seem expensive for the price but it is totally worth it. Make sure not to bring too big bags as there is not a lot of space to manoeuvre
A. B.
Was great. Better than expected.
I thought it was going to be like one of these boring Victorian houses you can visit.
It's genuinely like stepping back in time.
S. Q.
Amazing time capsule and a genuinely unusual experience. All the sights, smells and creaky floorboards appropriate to a large 18th century town house.
M. M.
A very interesting concept, a silent visit, trying to immerse oneself onto the history of the house. Two drawbacks - cash payment and long queues. No bookings needed on Sunday though!
S. S.
Incredibly interesting from the time you pull the door bell until you walk out the door. You actually believe that this might be the lost home of the early 19th century. They don't rush you through. Add this to your next trip to London. You won't be sorry.
R. D. (.
The closest you will (probably!) ever get to time-travel. Truly remarkable experience. Be sure to book ahead - I think it's best to visit at night - more atmospheric.
A. F.
Really intersting house to visit. Subtle backgound noises , candlelight throughout and the insistance that visitors are silent throughout their visit really add to the atmosphere and ambience.
M. N.
Great experience and it helps you visualise what Christmas was like back then. Only criticism, is the location, it is in Liverpool st. and there are many drunks and drug addicts around. Not a nice location for children but the house is great for them.
F. E.
The absolute best. Brilliant place.
T. B.
A secret museum, hidden in a house near Spitalfields and Liverpool Street Station. From the outside, it looks just like any other house, except for maybe the numbers of people coming and going. But knock on the door and enter to find one of the more unusual tourist attractions in London.
The multi-storey terraced house has been reconstructed inside to represent how it would have looked - and sounded, and smelled - when it was lived in by several generations of 18th century French Huguenot silk weavers. It's a spooky experience: wisps of smoke from extinguished candles, the smell of fresh (and not so fresh) food, and the faint echoes of conversations in other rooms, on the edge of earshot, combine to create the remarkable impression that, not only have you really stepped back in time and are wandering around someone's house, but that the occupants are still there, and it's only by chance that you keep missing them. Unique and highly recommended.
M. V.
This place is from another planet. It’s a building that recreates the home of the people from the 18th and 19th centuries. There are gadgets and gizmos aplenty, whozits and whatzits galore; and let’s not talk about the thingamabobs, they’ve got plenty! Looking around you’d think ‘Oh my, they’ve got everything!’
It’s poorly lit (VERY poorly lit if you go at night), BUT in my experience, is best if you try to catch the last half an hour of sun and the first of sunset. You can’t talk at all, you can’t touch anything. +1000 points of mood improvement if you spot the black cat lazying around.
S. F.
A unique and highly individual experience - the antidote to the typical institutional museum. Consider going on a dark winter's night, when the house may be at its most atmospheric.
D. F.
This was a nice way to kill 45mins. You will queue for up to 30mins to get in though. Having a sign outside wouldn't be a bad idea. It was well done and very interesting experience.
R. T.
Really intereseting and atmospheric. We went for a silent night tour (by candlelight). It was the best!
S. O.
We came for the Silent Night tour and loved the experience. It's unlike any other museum or historic site we've visited.

If you are a huguenot descendant or just interested in how they lived in the seventeenth century, visit Dennis Severs' Victorian town house in Folgate Street Spitalfields, London. It will give you a unique insight into their everyday lives, from their arrival, which is depicted on the top floor, living in Dickensian circumstances, to how they became very wealthy on the ground floor rooms. Every detail is a feast for the eyes, even sounds and smells have been used to create an authentic as possible atmosphere of the times.
K. P.
Atmospheric house showing silk weavers residence over the centuries. No electricity so very dark. Great day out with good pub opposite for food afterwards.
T. J.
It's an odd one. You'll spend much of your time wondering which parts are real versus staged. It's much more enjoyable if you take it slow to take in the details (and scents) and can suspend disbelief for an hour.
H. M.
Interesting preserved early 18th century home. Worth a visit.
x. n. L.
Quite secret place. Small place to explore among the big city.quite nice experience i would have said. If you do not ask the man infront of the door, you probably will miss it. Sadly say no photograph is available.
K. V.
Loved that this was a silent visit. You know that there is usually at least one person filling the room wherever you go. Here you could just look, listen and soak up the atmosphere in perfect peace.
L. E.
"If you don't see it, you don't see it." Dennis Severs' house is a recreation of a London house from the 18th through 19th centuries carefully designed to give the impression the residents have just stepped from the room. Small signs, slightly scolding in tone, guide you through the rooms and instruct how you should view their contents. Severs had an extensive collection of period knick-knacks which are displayed throughout the house.
The man at the door is full of information, but the staff on each floor are more guards than guides.
D. M.
Brilliant time capsule of a museum experience. Try and book for last visit of the day on a dark winter's day for most effective experience.
E. (.
This is my first time visiting a museum like this and the experience is phenomenal. The scene and aroma are very well put together, the atmosphere is immersive.
K. E.
Atmospheric recreation of a Spittlefields House, lit with candles. You go round on your own in silence. Not a museum but an experience.
L. R.
Quite a stunning piece of history preserved here in spitalfields!!! The tour guide was quite helpful and the house was absolutely gorgeous!!
A. C.
Really great, immersive experience. We had about a half an hour wait to get in, but it was really worth it. Check the opening times before you visit because it's not always open.
A. O.
Awesome and very atmospheric place. Didn't really know what to expect, but it is without doubt one of the finest attractions in London.
K. L.
Super interesting exhibit, but I could have done without all of the pretentious quotes from Dennis Severs printed out and posted all around the house.
V. A.
Amazing experience. Check website for available time slots. Better have 10£ cash per person, payment by card might be not possible.
R. B.
An utterly magical step back in time, what a triumph and amazing that Dennis' dream has been kept alive. Go round first, then ask the story behind it on your way out!
J. A.
Hands down the best museum and cultural experience in London. This museum is always my top recommendation to any London bound tourists or even locals looking for something a bit different to do
D. D.
Was a great find, a real unusual treasure. Really takes u back in time, especially with your senses. Imagine a museum that u are apart off. 😊
A. S.
I totally loved this experience. No photos by request, not good for children or people with mobility issues, but fabulous for everyone else.
M. H. J.
Such a special experience. Very well-made and with a lot of atmosphere. I recommed going for Silent Night.
B. H.
I would have preferred to visit in daylight with an entirely different presentation. I could not see well enough in the darkness to enjoy it.
N. S.
Most magical place in London. By the time you leave, you forget what century you’re in
T. B.
Not like any other museum I've been to. Very atmospheric and full of surprises.
S. C.
Very interesting and unusual experience. Beware you will probably need to queue a long time, and cash is needed to get in. Recommended.
F. M.
If you enjoy history this place is an unusual look into daily life. You can get lost in the details of the sites, sounds and smells.
R. D.
A very unique place. Makes you really experience what a house and life was like in the 19th century!
N. J. A. B.
This is the best Museum I have ever visited. It is quite an unforgettable experience and you will have to go many times to see all its delights
F. A.
Was walking past when I looked up this very unassuming residence from 18th century... It's a silent museum which adds to the creepiness
L. W.
Excellent little find full of fascinating rooms that truly do take you back in time! I would 100% recommend a visit!
A. R.
this place still resonates in my head and eyes. beautiful atmospheric rooms where you can forget completely,in which time you actually live.

G. F.
Fascinating place. Very atmospheric. Need to visit again. So much to see. Too much to absorb in one visit.
C. B.
An extraordinary experience ...part museum part art installation I would reccomend it to anyone with an interest in social history .
J. A.
I was very pleased to have visited Dennis Sever's House. Everything is brilliant--from the things, to the smell, and the experience. Definitely recommend it!
K. B.
What a unique and extraordinary experience! So glad we put this on the agenda. History come alive!! Beautiful!!
M. O.
I went with my wife and two teenage daughters. An interesting walk through time. For some reason not as inspiring as i thought it might be.
A. A.
The house was really amazing it was a very nice experience but shame that photography wasn't allowed
A. H.
Im in the camp of not quite getting it. It’s a cool idea and the scents and sounds are a nice touch, but it’s quite expensive for what it is...
U. W.
Bizarre, quirky and odd. Read the plot summary on the website before you go . It will help. Worth a look . Go after you have early lunch at Dishoom around the corner.
S. L.
A unique experience of the senses. It was as much of a visual tour as a verbal and scented tour.
a. r.
Great place under my nose in London. Worth a visit, it's a time capsule.
L. S.
Something very different. Atmospheric look at history in a house. Sounds and smells make it even better

Very atmospheric and interesting how people lived and ran their lives hundreds of years ago.
N. H.
A truly magnificent, authentic, and surprisingly little known, gem in the very heart of the city. Everyone should go and be transported back in time.
C.
Excellent museum. It shows exactly how people lived in 18th century. Very informative.
M. B.
Immersive and fascinating experience, all the more special because of the silence and the candlelight
A. W.
Book your timed entrance tickets in advance of your visit. It is an amazing experience, well worth the cost.
V.
Great visit.Well worth seeing
S. L.
Loved the experience but too bad my trip was marred by 2 couples where the guys just cannot keep their mouth shut!
F. J.
One of the most impressing places in the world. You just have to take your time to queue up.
G. V.
Very interesting, the sort of place you almost want to see on your own, not in a group.
A. A.
Not for every soul but unique and interesting glimpse of history from the curator’s perspective.
J. L.
If you have allergies, don't go. Otherwise, a zany concept that immerses you into a family that clearly had a pack rat problem.
H.
Brilliantly presented, but feel it was too cluttered
P. K.
I won’t say what this visit was like because words would be wholly inadequate. Pay a visit and be prepared to be enchanted
L. V.
Well worth visiting in the evening when it's dark. Really adds to the atmosphere.
C. P. (.
If you like London and it's history, it is definitely woth a visit!!!

Fascinating museum capturing a snapshot of life from the past. It won't take you long to visit (about 20 minutes) but the experience of walking through the rooms in this house is like walking through a still life painting. The attention to detail (dated items and new produce), the smells and the touches of humour gives the museum a real personality. You leave wanting to know the people who lived there. Amazing place just a few minutes from busy London life.
C. D.
Ok but not very organized

A fascinating place where everything seems frozen in place. I honestly think it's worth coming over several times as all the little details can't really be taken in in one go. Wouldn't advise to bring kids there as it is a silent tour after all.

(Translated) It is a beautiful place ... but you have to make a reservation online because the tours sell out very easily, it is a house set in the seventeenth century everything is as if the guests had suddenly disappeared and had left everything ... fire lit, the candles still lit, the bread on the table ... and the unmade beds ... it is an art show that if you like the alternative you can enjoy it a lot the tickets cost from 14 to 21 pounds per person and the tour is done in complete silence ... you must be 10 minutes before at the door of the place ... and the tour lasts approximately 20 minutes. THE COST SHOULD BE MORE ACCESSIBLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC .... THE SENSATION IS VERY GOOD!
(Original)

(Translated) A very interesting and unusual museum. The life of a London family who lived in the house during the 18th - early 20th centuries has been recreated. The atmosphere is created as if the family members had just left the house: there is an open book with glasses on the table, there is a cup of unfinished tea, candles are burning. The idea of the author of the museum, the former owner of the Dennis Severs house, was to create an atmosphere, motivate people to perceive and create their own picture of reality. And, in my opinion, he did it brilliantly.
The duration of the excursion (self-guided) is about 40 minutes. Be sure to book your tickets in advance.
(Original)

(Translated) Amazing location and experience! Everything is there: the atmosphere, the colors, the scents ... etc. I am amazed by this place, a mixture of the bizarre and the surprising. All these elements make this place a magical and confusing place. Despite the 15 pounds per visit per person, I do not regret at all this incredible trip made in religious silence!

(Translated) Clearly a museum like no other! I did the Sunday Afternoon tour (£ 10, concession £ 5) which consists of a walk through the different rooms of the house.
The rooms are beautifully furnished and the staging makes us believe that the family living in the house just left the room before we entered. Everything is lit by candles and visitors are invited to explore in silence.
The visit lasts 30 / 45min and the immersion is total. It is possible that there is a little queue before entering, but this allows not to be too many in the house.
I highly recommend.

(Translated) The best place to go to experience the old London atmosphere and home life. The home of a family living in 18th century London and the place where my life is animated is one of the best but not well known activities in London. In order to increase the effect in the place where the inhabitants leave the house suddenly and everything remains as it is, things such as the scent of candles, the woods that really burn in the fireplace, family sounds, cats walking around the house are used. If you follow the days on the website, you can find special visit times where the prices are very cheap and experience the old London life at cheap prices.
